Pumpkin Fritters with Zucchini Hummus RECIPE COCOLIFE

(SERVES 4) The combo of super crispy fritters and zesty, fresh hummus is pretty much perfect. Try it once and we promise you’ll soon be making it every week, like us!

Ingredients: 600g butternut pumpkin, peeled and cut into small pieces 2 large eggs, beaten 1 garlic clove, very finely chopped 3 tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves 3 tbsp almond meal 3 tbsp arrowroot or tapioca flour Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Avocado oil Sesame seeds, to serve Micro herbs, to serve (optional) ZUCCHINI HUMMUS 150g zucchini (1 medium-sized), cut lengthways into thick ribbons 3 tbsp flat-leaf parsley or mint leaves Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 garlic clove

Avocado oil 1 tbsp tahini ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper ¼ tsp sea salt Method: 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.

2. To make the zucchini hummus, arrange the zucchini ribbons on the prepared baking tray in a single layer and roast for 10-15 minutes, or until lovely and softened. Transfer the zucchini pieces to a food processor with the remaining ingredients and blitz to a smooth puree. Set aside.

3. For the fritters, set a steamer over a saucepan filled with a little water and bring to the boil. Add the pumpkin, cover with a lid and steam for 3-5 minutes, or until tender.

Transfer to a bowl and mash with a fork, then add the egg, garlic, parsley, almond meal and arrowroot or tapioca flour. Mix well to form a smooth batter.

Season to taste.

4. Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Working in batches, carefully lower heaped tablespoons of the batter into the pan and gently flatten with a spatula. Fry for 8-10 minutes, turning halfway through cooking, until golden brown and cooked through. Remove from the pan and drain on paper towel.

5. Divide the fritters among plates, top with dollops of zucchini hummus, a drizzle of avocado oil and sprinkle sesame seeds and micro herbs (if using) over the top. Enjoy. thecocolife.com.au

Manuka honey:

L iquid gold for gut health

O

ne of my favourite gut health products at the moment is Manuka honey. This isn’t just any regular honey. Manuka honey is shown to have antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can be particularly useful in a variety of gut-related issues. A longused staple for sore throats and skin ailments, we’re now seeing impressive results in the fight for better gut health.

How is Manuka honey different from normal honey?

Native to New Zealand, Manuka honey is produced by bees that exclusively pollinate flowers on the Manuka bush, making it distinct from traditional honey. The honey contains an active ingredient called methylglyoxal (MGO), which has specific antimicrobial properties.

All Manuka honey is both raw and unpasteurised to preserve the active compounds.

You might notice that Manuka honey jars display ratings that indicate the antibacterial strength of the honey inside. The rating system used can

range from MGO, UMF (unique Manuka factor), NPA (non-peroxide activity) and TA (total activity).

Regardless of the scale used, generally the higher the number, the higher the antimicrobial activity, and the more potent in addressing digestive complaints.

Annie's Breakfast Slice WORDS ANNE CLARK

Ingredients: 1 cup sunflower seeds ½ cup almonds ½ cup raw cashews ½ cup dried apricots ¼ cup dried cranberries ½ cup dates ½ cup sultanas ½ cup pepitas 4 drops vanilla essence ¼ cup honey and ½ cup hot water 2 eggs ½ cup gluten-free SR flour 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 drop of cinnamon essential oil

Method: Soak all the seeds, nuts and dried fruit in water and honey for a few hours.

Add the beaten eggs, and coconut oil, and mix all together. Press into a greased lamington tray with coconut oil on the base.

Bake the slice for 25 minutes medium heat 180°C. This slice needs to cool down, then store in the refrigerator.

Slice up and serve when needed. Great as a breakfast bar and for action times.

usiness is challenging from the outset. If you are like me and have spent your whole adult life self-employed, then you get used to the ebb and flow of each week. Eventually, the patterns start to emerge, and you can see where the cracks are. Then you try to fill them… and that is the interesting part of business.

It’s all very well to look at your strengths and what is working for you, but the real growth happens when you look at the weak links – the unattended issues and areas of your business that you are scared to step into.

What are they for you? For me, they have been about letting go of my old habits and beliefs; letting go of methods and practices that have worked in the past, and being open to new ways of business.

ow often have you woken up on ‘the wrong side of the bed’ and just knew that the whole day was going to suck big time and things would not be going right for you?

I have been putting into practice new habits for waking up ready for success every day and have found that these simple choices and actions each day are truly making a difference to how I feel and what I attract daily.

Feeling peace and happiness are just two of the side effects you may experience when you follow these three simple ways to create a day ready for success: 1. It begins the night before!

Before you go to sleep is an important time. When you take the weight of the day with you overnight into your dreams, it has a habit of still

being there in the morning. It’s like the record of the old keeps turning and playing and then, creating more of the same the next day.

Use the last 5-10 minutes of the day (or more) to truly tune in to how you want your life to FEEL. You may like to tap into your vision of that or even think about something that day that made you feel good.

Feeling good is the key here.

2. Start the day with thoughts that feel good!

Do you wake in the morning and immediately go to your problems?

The bills? The arguments? The leftover anger from the day before or the worry you have about something or someone?

Set yourself up to have something that makes you feel good to focus on.

Personally, I love the birds singing outside my windows and tune in to the beauty and joy of that!

Just 5-10 minutes of this habit in

the morning will allow a new focus to dominate.

3. Meditate for 10-15 minutes So many of us say we don’t have time to meditate, yet we will spend a good 30 minutes or more on our devices and social media in the mornings (PS: This is the worst way to set yourself up for success! You inevitably fall into comparison, fear and worry!)

Set 10-15 minutes every morning for you. Wake up earlier if need be.

Use this quiet time to tune out of your mind and into connection. It will change the direction of your day, mind and focus!

any people want it: to live their purpose, generate a great income doing what they love and make a difference at the same time. Unfortunately, not many people get there. Sabotage, procrastination, fears, distractions and other patterns have a strong grip and bring most people to the point of giving up.

I’ve been working with thousands of conscious leader clients globally over the past 16 years, helping them connect with their purpose, monetise it and take the brakes off their limitless potential so they can unapologetically share their gifts. Know who you serve and connect with them The clearer you are on your authentic message and why that drives you, the more aligned and authentic your way of communicating this to the world will be. It’s about understanding exactly who you are and what you offer, as well as who you are offering it to, so your ideal people will be able to find you.

3. Hold your space and speak from the centre of your power In order to unapologetically share your gifts with the world, you cannot hold back for the sake of what others think, but listen within and follow that guidance and voice confidently.

4. Free yourself of a lifetime of emotional baggage, conditioning and upper limits Our experiences, no matter whether past life or present, get stored in our body as a representation for our subconscious. The good news is that trapped emotions, stories, beliefs and conditioning can be released via acknowledgement and potent clearing via the five elements. That way, you can take your life back, ditch sabotage, go for your dreams and enjoy better health, fulfilment, income and impact.

ow is your business travelling?

Are you ticking all the boxes, spending each day in line with your values? Do you feel content at the end of each day, knowing that you are making a difference in the world? If the answer is ‘yes’, that is fantastic, but are you also profitable, and is the business growing?

Running a business can be a very lonely place at times, when you are overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done, and you have limited resources and not enough hours in the day.

My business has been running for 19 years, and I have had many ‘challenges’ and learning opportunities along the way.

If you are trying to manage everything yourself, it can be exhausting as well as overwhelming. I learnt very quickly to identify my talents and then delegate or outsource to others, so that I could spend more time doing what I do best. Goals & Dreams now has a

total staff of eight working together as a team. We moved offices in February, and I was both humbled by and grateful for the way everyone pulled together, rolled up their sleeves and made it happen – all whilst providing excellent service to our clients.

We have built great systems and documented our procedures over time.

However, it didn’t happen overnight.

Everyone is responsible for their part of the process, which I liken to a production line. Let’s imagine we are a wine bottling company. It’s someone’s job to wash the bottles, another to put the wine in, someone else puts on the label, while another puts the lid on and another puts the bottles into a carton.

You get the picture. If someone doesn’t take responsibility for their role, all the bottles come crashing down.

We frequently ‘down tools’ and take time out to work on our ‘factory’ processes, with everyone contributing and feeling part of the team. Also, having team members who are skilled

in different areas is vital, especially if you have a small team. The more multiskilled your team, the more the business hums.

In the early days, I tried to help everyone without being adequately compensated. I underestimated my value and the difference I was making to my clients’ lives and situations. We have a huge postcard board on which we display cards sent to us from happy clients who are enjoying the journey and achieving their goals and dreams.

Don’t forget to celebrate your achievements and milestones along the way and open that bottle of champagne!

You see, a few years ago I took my husband on a cruise ship for the first time and I was entertained by a speaker. I said to myself, “I will do that one day”. I

never set out to be a businesswoman and that label still feels like it doesn’t quite fit, but I guess that’s what I am after 30 years creating and managing a massage and movement business in Gympie. It began as a need to take control of my life, not just my income.

But I was primarily driven by the desire to learn what I was capable of and to make good use of my time, so when I take my last breath I’m celebrating rather than regretting my life.

I began training in massage in 1990 and as soon as I completed the first four-day Swedish massage module, I put an ad in the local paper. To my amazement, on my first day, I had four bookings and two of those clients rebooked. I rested my massage notes on their pelvis as I struggled through the sequence, and I still smile at that memory.

That was the beginning of this journey that has turned out to be one of self-discovery. For the first

time in my life I found I was good at something and I couldn’t get enough of learning – aromatherapy, kinesiology, acupressure, anatomy, physiology, chemistry, physics, yoga and all styles of massage. It wasn’t until I found my teacher, Kahuna Abraham Kawai’i, that I learnt how to pull all that information and experience together into a format I could use to help others learn to know themselves through bodywork and movement. I’m still learning; I don’t see an end to it and encourage others to continue seeking new experiences to promote personal growth.

I understand that my business is a part of me and reflects my inner life; therefore, the prime focus of Kahuna Mist is promoting self-responsibility by owning and inhabiting one’s body with awareness and compassion. Learning how your body naturally moves, while sensing it in motion and rest, will teach you how to restore its functions and, in doing so, expand your awareness of

your capability to courageously fulfil your potential.

unning a business or creating something from nothing and then making it into business is not easy. People see overnight success and think that’s what happens, but the truth behind that success is years of pushing through the ups and downs, the lessons and self-development that keeps us from succeeding the way we view success.

I am in my ninth year of business this year and can honestly say it has been a roller-coaster at times. But through it all, I have learnt some profound lessons about myself. ometimes, my job as a family doctor can be a little confronting.

It’s not just looking at a human body and trying to repair it as if it was a machine. Other really important factors influence our health, including the stress of life that everyone is exposed to. We cannot escape this, but we can modify our perception of it. Stress is something made by us, and its consequences depend on how we face it.

In modern society, we need to earn our living. People can get really submerged in their jobs and become obsessed with making a lot of money, without realising that material things can’t buy you happiness. I don’t argue

that it is nice to enjoy nice things, as long as you are aware that you are not really the owner of things but simply the custodian while you are alive.

We see a lot of families torn apart by fighting over material things after the death of a loved one. It is insane to not realise that sooner or later, we all have the same fate. In the end, it’s about finding a balance between living comfortably with what we earn, and doing something that really satisfies us as a person, trying to make a better world, without focusing on our own selfishness.

I can say I feel proud of my work because I really enjoy what I do, trying

to make people healthier and help them temporarily pause and reflect on life. It is very rewarding to see the changes and get paid for it.

The Dalai Lama has a saying: Men lose their health to make money, and then lose their money trying to recover their health, and by thinking anxiously about the future they forget the present. They live as if they are never going to die, and die as if they have never lived.

I

have worked for the government for most of my life. I have always been a bit of a go-getter who wanted to keep reaching for more.

It took about three years to fully adjust to motherhood and embrace myself as a mother. Those first few years were rough as I let go of the younger, less evolved parts of myself and discovered whole new aspects. I knew this was the next initiation in my life.

After trying to juggle motherhood and work, and negotiate more flexible working hours/working from home, I soon realised that the push for balance between both worlds was more stressful than the balance itself. I wanted to make something of myself, but I also wanted to be with my kids as much as possible.

After a huge push from the universe, I decided to leave the stability of my government job and pursue work for myself that aligned with who I am, and began studying to become a life coach.

When I fell pregnant with my second child, it was difficult to function properly, as I was overcome with severe morning sickness for most of the pregnancy. However, I knew that along with my son’s soul beginning to enter his and my body, a huge amount of high vibrating energies and downloads were coming through to me.

I received more insight and ideas for me and my business, but it was more than that; the visions were a plan that I needed to trust and follow, no matter how outrageously big they were.

My relationship with the spirit world intensified, and I began to just let go and surrender and listen to the clear guidance coming to me.

Since that time, I have been following guidance from Spirit through the highs and the lows. As my children have grown and I have grown as a mother, I have also grown as a spiritual entrepreneur, and nothing can prepare

you for the deep and amazing shifts this journey brings you, if you let it.

I see so many women feeling pulled because they want to do something with their lives, but feel constrained by being a mum. What I would say to those women is that being a mum is an initiation that brings out your spiritual entrepreneur; because Spirit has a plan for you. However, who you need to become to follow your inner higher insights and be that woman largely happens through your learnings and initiation of motherhood. We are all different, and not all of us take this entrepreneur journey through motherhood. in the background of his office (3000 books to be exact, according to Jack).

Straight away, his energy spoke to me as the archetypal teacher with sage advice and he was also quick to share that he is a perpetual learner, always challenging himself with new learnings and experiences.

pays off. After working as a high school teacher, he joined a training company for two years, before going out on his own. In the 1990s he teamed up with Mark Victor Hansen and they received over 100 knock backs from book publishers before Chicken Soup for the Soul was picked up and then became a series of books and a billion dollar empire that touched the hearts of people all around the world.

Success didn’t just fall in Jack’s lap, he created it. “To start with, my mother-in-law gave me a $10,000 loan. I had to be successful immediately. I didn’t have time to fail. I didn’t have much capital, so I had to make it work.”

He said looking back, his advice to people desiring to start a business would be to have money to sustain them in the early stages of the business. And then make profitability a priority, have a business plan and partner up with people who have skills that you don’t.

Jack explains there are seven aspects to a business: the product, product development, marketing, sales, PR, finance and admin support. To start with he wore all these ‘hats’. “I learnt everything I could about everything,” he said, but eventually hired other people to help in those different areas so the company could grow exponentially.

If you are an holistic-preneur, you may be still cringing at the idea that sales is a part of business! Coming from an education background and then working as a psychotherapist and coach, Jack said he too resisted the area of sales. So how can you move beyond the resistance? Jack suggested to learn as much as possible about sales and check out various online classes. And you don’t have to use fear as a sales tactic, instead learn the art of persuasion and learn how to deal with rejection. It’s also about identifying and changing your unconscious limiting beliefs (usually developed from childhood) around money and self-worth. He said when you work on these areas you can believe in yourself and your product from a deeper level.

“Become so ‘attractive’ that people find you. It’s not so much about what you are doing but what you are being,” he shared.

Jack has spoken to and trained millions of people, and has recently trained 3500 people through his Train the Trainer program which is now teaching his work in 117 countries; and at 75 years young, he is not idle with his creations. Although how Jack defines success now is more in terms of “fulfilling your soul’s purpose”. It incorporates every aspect of his life and he openly shared with me that his vision board includes not only his business goals and plans to finish three books this year but also physical health goals and time with family. In fact, he recently spent a month in India visiting an holistic health clinic, to detox, rejuvenate and focus on a plant-based diet. After rupturing a disc in his back a few years ago, he stopped exercising and said he was consuming too many calories, so health and fitness are areas of development for 2020.

When you run a business, it’s easy to forget that spending more time with loved ones is good for the mind, body and spirit, and Jack mentioned his vision board is very specific and includes 100 days this year enjoying his wife’s company and 30 days with his six-and-a-halfyear-old grandson without engaging in any work.

ould there be a universal toolkit we could use in every aspect of our lives? As well as protecting us, these tools would help us stay open, creative and flexible as we meet the challenges of life.

This toolkit is freely available, a gift we can pass on to others seeking keys to greater balance, joy and freedom in their lives. Highly adaptable, it takes up no space and allows us to travel lightly. The go-to component of this kit is a spiritual multi-tool, the sacred sound HU. A spiritual seeker since my youth, I first learned of this spiritual multi-tool decades ago and use it every day to open my spiritual eyes and ears and connect with my true nature, soul.

A regular practice of singing this sacred sound HU, along with my spiritual studies in Eckankar, expanded my spiritual toolkit. HU connects me

with my highest awareness and opens me to guidance from my inner teacher.

From this higher state of consciousness, I can welcome the waves of life for the learning they bring.

HU has become an integral part of my work. Before engaging with a client, I pause, open my heart and sing HU silently, inviting the highest good for the person I am about to meet. I am humbled by the direction these conversations take at times, experiencing divine spirit flowing through me to bring insight and comfort to those in need.

I am most grateful for having discovered the secret of a joyful heart, as Harold Klemp says in The Awakening Soul, “When our hearts are open to God’s love, then the divine power can use us as an instrument to pass divine love and blessings along to others”.

As I discover more about the nature of life and my toolkit reveals the everpresent divine love and guidance that is here for us all, I am compelled by the freedom this knowing brings to help others who seek it too. This is the joy of serving life as a volunteer in Eckankar.

I am reminded of Joseph Campbell’s words, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way”.

Each day is an opportunity we all have to learn more about divine love, how we might give it, and how we might experience it, in even the smallest of ways.

I

have never quite aligned with the way many create success in business, particularly in the past few years.

Following the mainstream approach, I experienced many dysfunctions in the frameworks and functionality. They were creating burnout, internal conflict and often separation from the things we value most. Seemed insane to me.

So, I went on an adventure to seek new ways of being in business. I want to share my perspectives, not for you to follow but to consider, so you can define your own. I am an advocate for working out your own toolkit by leaning into the examples of others, while ensuring you customise one to suit your own needs. Modelling others reduces authenticity and we would much rather meet the real and unique you!

Here are a few components of my toolkit that have delivered me great success and allowed me to positively

impact many lives. Stay open and see what might work for you.

1. Be clear on your mission, vision and intentions for each project within your business. This facilitates clear communication to teams, clients and through marketing channels. (So often my vision was crystal clear in my head, and I expected others to just get it.

But when I took the stance that it was my role to create clarity for others, then everything began to flow.) This means choosing a team who is open to digesting your truth.

2. Create rituals that allow for the ebb and flow of your personal energy.

Your energy needs to dictate activity, not the other way around.

3. Ensure you define your boundaries and space in your workspace to optimise focus and minimise interruptions when you need to be in flow. (This has meant removing

assumptions. Most humans operate with unspoken expectations and hidden assumptions. I like to assume that no one knows what my boundaries are and communicate them clearly. This one’s a big gift!)

4. Have a powerful feedback system and reward honest feedback. Humans love receiving feedback when it is given with the intention of growth. We also often need to give feedback but rarely do, unless we feel empowered and safe to do so. This involves developing a deep sense of trust and maintaining open communication.

5. Alignment is one of my favourites.

When we feel a deeper sense of purpose or alignment in what we do in our businesses, our energy often seems to match this.

You are a physical manifestation of the universe – the greatest creator in the world, and you have the ability and the creativity to allow yourself to receive whatever you desire… whether that is a new marketing funnel or a new purpose.

his month we answer a reader’s question around her purpose and give a different perspective on business and marketing as an entrepreneur serving the spiritual, conscious and awakening markets.

Q: I love what I’m doing but sometimes I feel trapped in the marketing and as a result I lose momentum. Then I start wondering if I’m even on the right path. Am I following my soul path? – CD, Law of Attraction Coach.

A: What a great question C. Yes, you are on your soul path. I know this because I know that ‘life is happening for you’ and you cannot get it wrong. I also know that you are the universe made manifest and therefore, your thinking that you must be ‘doing it wrong’ can only be coming from that part of you that thinks you are separate from and less than the universe.

The truth is that you are not separate from or less than the universe. In the field of oneness and infinite possibility you are the universe.

Now let’s address the second part – if what I’m saying above is true, and it is, then when you are feeling good and in alignment with your true self, you know you are on your path. Conversely, when you have to ‘do’ marketing you slip out of that alignment due to your thinking that you are not good at it, don’t know how to do it and you have evidence of these things

because in the past you have tried marketing and it didn’t work.

In that moment, you are stepping into what you think and believe you know about you, your business and everything else.

And out of alignment of the truth of who you really are.

In the field of infinite possibilities, including the idea that you are the universe, you ask, it is given and you receive.

Your path, when it comes to being in alignment to your marketing, is to allow yourself to ask for the most easy, flowing solution to your need AND then to receive it through inspired action i.e. taking action only when inspired to do so by your soul.

When you bring this into your marketing efforts, you will stop trying to ‘do’ marketing and you will simply share what you do with those who have asked for it (through their own asking of the universe) and it will feel like a dance perfectly orchestrated between you and your ideal clients.

eople have been telling me that it’s impossible to truly be you, have a thriving business and, dare I say, receive millions.

Say what? I ask them to tell me more…

They tell me that to receive millions, you’ve got to make sacrifices, do work you hate and work so hard you burn out; none of which is being you.

Well, I’m here to say that is all BS! Does an entrepreneur ever feel like asking, “What the heck did I choose this for?”

Well, I did. After years of struggling, working 70 hours a week and not financially thriving, there were many times I felt like giving up and just getting a job. But I still had this dream of having freedom, living anywhere in the world, having plenty of money, serving amazing clients and being an inspiration.

Truly, this dream drove me. And I’m like most entrepreneurs; we love

what we do and have a vision of what is possible, right? So if you are ready to up-level your business but aren’t making the progress you’d like, I have a little tip that might give you a boost.

Some people say that working harder, getting the right funnel or working more hours is the way to grow your business.

I did that, and trust me… it doesn’t work out well.

After years of not truly thriving, I had an epiphany. I was continually being the same version of myself.

Working hard and working a lot were in my wheelhouse (learned from my grandfather), and I was really good at both. Then, like a lightning bolt of awareness, it hit me… if I wanted to make my dream entrepreneur life a reality, I was going to have to be different in my business.

So I got my journal out and began writing out all the ways I could be the

CEO of a seven-figure business. I wrote it all down.

What showed up next – in my face – was that I would need to change the way I functioned in my business. I would have to up-level my choices to match where I was going, instead of waiting until I got there to change.

And there it was, the clarity of how to up-level my business. I was stuck on a hamster wheel and I wasn’t a hamster anymore. I had tapped into a new version of myself, a sparkly unicorn CEO who immediately tapped into the consciousness of her future self and made choices from that level of consciousness.

It was pretty rad. Everything in my business changed because of this one question: “If I was the CEO of a sevenfigure company, what would I choose and who would I be?”

Business as a

spiritual quest

I

think one of the hardest things for me in business was stepping out from behind a neutral business name and operating under my own name.

The feeling of exposure and perceived judgment, and being more visible was a decision I had to grow into. And it took a long time.

It brought up so much: What will people think? Will they think I’m full of myself?

Business, and especially entrepreneurship, is one big personal growth leap. In fact, it’s a series of many leaps. If there is anything that needs to shift, to be healed, you can be sure business will bring it to the surface. To stand out in any way means exposing yourself to all kinds of projections.

It means risking rejection, risking reputation, risking leaving the ‘tribe’ and standing on your own. It can be scary, as belonging to a tribe is a basic human need, alongside food and shelter.

Even though Australia as a country is slowly beginning to celebrate

diversity, the ‘tall poppy’ culture is still rampant. It means risking your very own concept of emotional survival to break away from the tribe and from being ‘the same’.

That’s why business and leadership can transform you if you let it. It becomes a spiritual quest.

This is because there’s something that has to come before personal insecurities; something more important than being part of a society that wants to cut you down rather than celebrate you; something beyond what even your mind thinks you should be doing. And that’s your authentic purpose.

I remember people talking about purpose years ago and thinking, “What is it? What is my purpose?” Some people know at a young age; most grow into their purpose. It evolves as you grow.

Everything in your life has been orchestrated to take you to the path on which you are now standing.

Everything. Even the most painful

journey leaves an indelible mark on your soul. And eventually, once you have been in the trenches, you realise the only thing to do is transform that pain into something meaningful: to serve others, to serve humanity, to bring joy, to bring healing, to bring beauty, to bring pleasure, to bring relief for those suffering.

When your desire to serve humanity in a way that is sustainable to you overtakes your desire to survive and protect your personality, then you know that you have a purpose.

I am not saying I am totally there yet. I still feel vulnerable about being seen, but I am willing to stand strongly for what I believe in because I know it’s helping others. And for that, I am humbled.

or the past three years I have travelled almost constantly with my business – including Europe twice a year, Tahiti (absolute paradise!), Russia (challenging), USA (different!), Brazil (wow), Corsica (wonderful), Mexico (OMG) and Japan (love it) a few times.

Before that, the farthest I’d been from my home in Australia was New Zealand. 10 years ago I could not have imagined my business expanding in this way! My income has multiplied many times over while I travelled.

I’ve been self-employed for over 40 years. I’ve learned along the way, and at 61 I’m still learning. People buy you and your energy pretty much no matter what you are doing. So it’s important to be happy and enthusiastic and these are choices you make day to day. I’m certainly not an expert in many things!

But I can always find someone who is!

1. Take a course in social media

and learn how to use it. Having a basic knowledge of Facebook and Instagram really helps. Get over any resistance you have!

2. Be the best you can be at all times – get a makeover with a personal stylist so you know your best colours and dress styles and wear them – look a million dollars in your photos (professionally done shots that reflect your personality) and if you are presenting live to a group, a class or at an event, dress up! It matters!

3. The one thing I have found most challenging with travel or when I’m at home juggling multiple time zones – is to keep moving. Don’t give up on walking, swimming, dancing, whatever, every day.

4. Find your ‘cheerleaders’ – that is, people who love what you do and who talk and post about you, and reward them. Enthusiasm is infectious.

5. Enthusiasm – vital – sometimes

you have to create it – immerse yourself in what you love, read about it, research it, choose to be enthusiastic about your business, what you do, your life.

6. Do the most uncomfortable things. A few years ago someone suggested that if I wanted my business to grow, I had to make videos. I got very angry – I was super comfortable doing voice-only telecalls and presenting to groups live, but something about being on camera terrified me. I cried before my first attempt. Anyone who knows me now, knows you can’t keep me away from recording videos! I absolutely adore it! Actually, I have such ease with it, that I recorded live every day for 365 days last year to a private Facebook group. It’s been the biggest factor in my success so far.

I

have a varied career history, but operating a successful small business on a budget is definitely one of the most challenging things I have done.

And I cannot sit here and say, “I’ve done it!”, as just as much energy is required to keep the ship on course.

The title ‘entrepreneur’ gets bandied around everywhere. If you believe all the hype, you may think every fifth person is a successful entrepreneur striking it rich with their new start-up company. You will also have heard the term ‘overnight success’. This phrase is misleading and more often than not, downright incorrect. Often, businesses hailed as ‘overnight successes’ have been in operation for extended periods, even years, before the spotlight.

Successful business skills don’t come easily – almost all my successful business lessons have been learned the hard way. One way to truly learn something is to really get it wrong and then have to fix it. My learning has cost

me a small fortune and countless hours of my time.

KNOW YOUR STUFF With increasing specialisation in all aspects of business, it is easy to take a back seat when considering certain aspects, especially if you are time-poor.

If you are going to engage (and spend money) you need a solid understanding of the basics. For example, social media advertising can be a black hole of budget consumption with little to no benefit if you don’t have a basic working understanding of how ads on each platform work.

This principle applies across the board, including bookkeeping, accounting guides, point of sale systems, inventory, marketing and promotion (print, digital, social), business presentation online and social media, and customer service and satisfaction. Before you delegate, make sure you understand exactly what is required!

Who you are

f you can relate to thoughts like, “I have done so much work on myself, and still, things are not changing or showing up in my business”, I encourage you to look at who you are at home, with yourself and others.

In terms of energy and vibration, you might understand spiritual and conscious concepts such as ‘I’m the creator of my reality’ or ‘what you put out is what you get back’.

You may also be focusing on ‘living in the question’ and ‘talking to the universe/your body’; working on being ‘unconditional’ in how you love yourself; practising not judging others; eliminating thoughts that contain the energy of doubt, limitation and sabotage; transforming your inner ‘stories’ so they serve you and your business goals; be committed to positive thinking that is intention-based; doing what it takes to feel happy; and striving for a ‘better’ life.

I may not have aligned exactly with what you are working on in yourself, but I’m sure you get my gist. The point I am making and desiring to share is, ‘who you are at home is who you are!’

‘The universe does not reward you, it reflects you.’ It reflects your most dominant vibration – the one that hums out consistently from the unconscious.

This is the vibration of who you are when you are in your home. Not what you ‘think’ you are, but how you consistently emotionally feel and show up with yourself and others. And how ‘present’ you are with that.

If you desire life to flow for you as well as align with the dreams in your heart, organically and with ease, then I believe I have found a way to create this, so you feel and continually experience your reality effortlessly supporting you through the ups and downs – in your business and relationships, and with your money and happiness.

When I say the word ‘home’, I am referring to the following definition.

Your home, and who you are in it, the inside and out, is a direct reflection of the relationship YOU have with your heart – the thoughts and feelings you have about your home, how it looks, the mortgage/rent as well as who lives with you. Can you relax and BE in it?

Do you love being in it and do you love others being in it? Moreover, how you care for it, how you feel about cleaning it, how healthy you are in it, how present you are in it, and whether you can holiday in it.

These are all the ‘stories’ determining the relationship you have with your heart. How you feel about these stories is the dominant vibration that goes out to the universe. This is the feeling that is reflected to you through your experiences. www.julesoneill.com

D

o you have a 5-year plan? If someone had asked me this years ago I would have said “no”. If someone told me I would be an entrepreneur and have a successful business, I would have laughed! But I believe if you want something in this world you need to follow that dream and give it a shot, otherwise you do something for the rest of your life that doesn’t make your spirit soar.

One evening, I was meditating with a crystal. I am not psychic, but I clearly heard a voice telling me to start healing people and be involved in a spiritual path selling crystals. People use crystals and feel their metaphysical benefits.

Next, I told my family that I was starting an online crystal business and enrolling in a crystal healing course to gain knowledge and help others.

With not much money in the bank, we take it out and give it a go. We register the business, satisfy all the

legal requirements and set off to buy a certain amount of crystals to start my venture.

Weeks later, my excitement turned to disappointment as those sales just didn’t roll in! Despite stocking beautiful pieces and gaining a qualification in crystal healing, I just wasn’t making money. I went months making just $50 a week, if I was lucky. I thought about quitting but my supportive family encouraged me to keep going. The hours I worked for the meagre money was not worth it, but the universe had plans for me.

Repeat customers started appearing.

They loved my crystals and started asking healing advice. I finally started getting a modest wage, which I invested into more stock. Fast forward a few years (which were long, emotional and hard) and we are now successful.

Wayne quit his day job to help me, as I couldn’t manage it alone. Fast forward

to today and we now have four in our team, each with distinct skills that contribute to the daily running of our business.

Online is not for everyone. Be warned, if you’d like a day off or holidays, this is not for you! It’s not as easy as some think. It never stops and you simply can’t turn the shop off. On average, we work 16-hour days 7 days a week to keep up. We do take time out but it is for perhaps one day here or there or a long weekend, twice a year.

I never thought the title WORDS SONYA DRIVER

‘entrepreneur’ applied to me

T

hat was, until I started reading about the characters, traits, habits and thought patterns of many entrepreneurs.

Then I bought the t-shirt.

Little things stood out to me. For example, I didn’t really like school, except for the social aspect. I found it hard to concentrate on things I wasn’t interested in, but would be super focused on and excel at things I like. I am driven, don’t enjoy holidays, find it hard to switch off, have a hundred ideas and mostly a mindset of ‘anything is achievable’.

There is a saying: “An entrepreneur is someone who will spend five years of their life like most people wouldn’t, so

they can spend the rest of their life like most people can’t!”

Personally, I think money as a motivation is a weak foundation.

Here are some items in my toolkit: 1. Surround yourself with the right people.

2. Formulate a basic business plan that you understand. I love using a whiteboard on wheels to do this. Write down your vision and how to make it happen.

3. Market yourself. People want to connect to other people, even if they want to troll you! So, grow a thick skin.

4. Don’t be paralysed by the pursuit of perfection, just get it done, and you will get better at it.

5. Pace is the most important thing.

6. Get your domains. Don’t borrow too much money, as you’d be setting yourself up with added pressure and are on the back foot before you get started.

7. Do your research, don’t be a copycat. What’s your passion? What are you good at? How can you make that commercial?

8. Lastly, always do the right thing.

It all comes back.

You don’t need to be the best; however, you do need to be the one that’s consistent and doing the work.

The effort determines the results.

Be an

aware entrepreneur

T

he path to successful business comes in as many varieties as those who walk them. The path I share with others is a similar message I share regarding creating peace within yourself, and in the external world. To put this into perspective is the underlying philosophy that our only true purpose here is to awaken, to become aware.

With this philosophy a monk becomes no different to a barista; the educated scholar, sales person or wise guru are all on a level playing field. The only difference are those who know this, those who function and take action from the perspective of asking for a higher guidance, or in service to all, and those who function from fear and doubt.

There have been thousands of interviews conducted with those considered successful. One common thread that runs through each of

these is that either they trusted their intuition (what I refer to as Spirit, or the Director), found something larger than themselves for guidance to believe, or are focused on service for the greater good.

All these different forms lead to the peace within that sustains us and which then allows us to live a happier lifetime here. This could be expressed in a material or financial form, a healthy body and healthy communions with others or if that happy life becomes an extension through which we inspire and lift others. If it’s one or a million becomes insignificant – when we experience peace within, we have already awoken to realise the oneness all of us share. This is all that is required to awaken – one. Do not doubt how significant you are. We do not require thousands or millions of followers. Just as when we dream and there are many different people in our dreams: it only

takes us the dreamer, the one person, to wake up and the dream ends.

This entrepreneurial toolbox contains the most potent of tools: Spirit.

Begin with an alarm for each hour to remind yourself to ask for ‘inspired action’, then build up to an alarm every 30 minutes, after a few weeks set the alarm for every 15 minutes. Eventually the pathways will be reset within the mind to always be asking for ‘inspired action’. This means asking: what can I be, what can I do, what can I say to remain in peace. Inspired action means you are connecting to your ‘right mind’. This is the part of you that is Spirit connected to everyone else.

What flows from these connections are miracles. Miracles should be every day, every moment; all of us are entitled to miracles.

ustralia’s premier body painting event is taking place on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April in the Noosa Hinterland town of Cooroy in a new venue at Apex Park. With a theme this year of ‘Time Travel’ it is sure to offer up a rich tapestry of art through the ages that will delight the senses!

The festival is a colourful and creative experience for all ages and offers a unique free weekend of activities.

unique and different. Spectators always say what a wonderful experience it is to see living works of art come to life. This year you can expect to be transported from the distant past to the mysteries of the future,” said event manager, Danielle Taylor.

This award-winning event is centred on competitions in temporary body painting in the categories of brush and sponge, airbrush, special effects and face painting. All types of artists participate from around Australia and they simply used their artistic flair to work on a very different canvas – the human body!

For members of the public, it’s an event like nothing ever seen before, as human canvases take shape during the competitions and come to life on stage at the end of each day.

It’s not just body painting competitions – it’s a totally arty weekend!

There is a Wearable Art Competition with parades featuring funky fashions made from recycled treasures. New to the festival this year, is a Surfboard Art Competition with artworks being done throughout the day and the boards

auctioned in the afternoon. There are also sculptures, interactive community art, live music, street performers, a wonderful selection of market stalls, delectable food and lots of activities for the kids and for those who are just kids at heart. Plus, to finish each day, there is an amazing parade of the completed body painting.

he stress of life is a modern complaint today. We are constantly bombarded with new information, 24/7 culture and communication devices demanding constant attention, all of which can lead to chronic stress. Stress can be a shortterm reaction to a particular situation, or it can be a long-term response.

Stress leads to increased coagulation in our blood which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Coagulation is a protective mechanism from excessive bleeding, should injury occur in fight-orflight situations. Stress response is there for a reason and it’s meant to be limited to scenarios when facing life-threatening situations. Unfortunately, a lot of people in our modern culture are staying in fight-or-flight mode permanently. It can become dangerous and damaging to our health and especially to our heart. Many coronary events occur in individuals with normal cholesterol levels and no evidence of risk of cardiovascular disease.

So how can we assess if we are at risk of developing cardiovascular disease and find out if our body is in a state of constant stress?

ut health is the core of all health.

Having a healthy gut means having an ideal amount and diversity of good bacteria (probiotics).

Having a healthy gut can prevent unwanted weight gain and even help with weight loss in several ways. One way is by the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Gut bacteria are involved in the production of several vitamins including vitamin K and some of the B vitamins, which are important for overall health and energy production.

Gut health can also impact the breakdown and excretion of fats affecting how much energy is stored as fat by the body.

Have you ever had intense food cravings or feel that you aren’t satisfied after eating a meal? Well a healthy gut is important for the production of different hormones which help in the regulation of appetite and help you feel full, hence helping prevent over-eating. Research has shown that people who are

overweight tend to have less diversity of the good bacteria in our large intestine.

Improving this by diet and probiotics can help balance hormones and help with weight loss.

Another way in which gut health can help with healthy weight loss is by the gut-brain axis. This describes the two-way communication between the gut and the brain. A healthy gut makes more serotonin which can help in improved mood and energy levels.

By decreasing our stress hormones and improving our ‘happy’ hormones, this can help improve our energy levels and make it easier to stick to a healthy diet and regularly include enjoyable movement.

Tips for a healthier gut include: • A diet containing plenty of plantbased foods that provide a food source for the gut bacteria. For example: vegetables, fruits, legumes like lentils and chickpeas and whole grain cereals.

• Fermented foods like kefir, yogurt, kombucha and pickled vegetables.

• Keep well hydrated and aim for 6-8 glasses of water a day (herbal teas count).

• Reduce stress by deep breathing exercises, meditation or journaling.

O

ne of the most common questions I get asked as an holistic vet is what exactly is it that I do. Does holistic mean no drugs at all? Some people even think we do surgical procedures without an anaesthetic!

This is not correct. We are not entirely anti-drugs. Drugs can be lifesaving! If it weren’t for Western medicine I wouldn’t be here today. At the age of 21 when travelling in Canada, I contracted bacterial meningitis. The particular bacteria responsible carried a 55% mortality rate; I was the 1-in-2 that survived. And that was due to fast action by the emergency doctor, Western diagnostics, and life-saving intravenous antibiotics. I was very grateful for modern medicine at that point in my life as you can imagine.

Western medicine shines in acute emergency scenarios. But I believe it has immense limitations when it comes to chronic disease, and can even be damaging. Sadly, chronic disease is what we mostly see in vet practice – the dogs that scratch themselves to bits after a single flea bite, the cats that pull their own hair out, pets that get vomiting

or diarrhoea or constipation on a weekly, or even daily, basis, chronic hormone imbalances, and nasty cancers at younger and younger ages.

With holistic medicine, we can offer more solutions. We integrate the best of Western medicine, which can include diagnostics, or surgery, or necessary medications or vaccines, with complementary modalities such as acupuncture, diet changes and herbal treatments.

We also take great care when prescribing any drugs, or selecting vaccines to administer. I have seen much evidence over my career of drug and vaccine reactions. Many are over-prescribed, both in human and veterinary practice. All that can be offered at times, is a lifetime of drug prescriptions that sadly are not always well tolerated. We advocate a minimal safe vaccine schedule, and only prescribe drugs when they are essential or when

safer herbs or other natural medicines won’t do the job required.

I believe an holistic approach, where we look at the whole picture, the entire medical history, the behaviour of the animal, stress factors, lifestyle, diet, and the present symptoms, will move the pets we see in the direction of WELLNESS. That is what we are always striving for and that is true medicine.

hy do we age, and why do children heal so quickly?
