5 steps to reset your skin ready for 2021

Words GEETA POWANI

As the year winds down, the busy-ness from the last 12 months can take its toll. With school term coming to an end, work busier than ever, shopping, social catchups and Christmas, we not only feel tired and run-down, we push ourselves just to rush across the end-of-year finish line.

I always see the impact of tiredness on my daughter, Mia’s skin by the end of the year. Eczema flare-ups appear more regularly, whispering for help.

Yes, of course we should absolutely enjoy this period… Christmas is a special time to spend with family and your loved ones!

But let’s look after ourselves at the same time so when the clock strikes 1 January, 2021, we not only feel amazing, but our skin is glowing from the inside-out. Here are my tips on how I breeze into the new year energised:

SLEEP

The restorative effect of sleep on our body cannot be underestimated. When we sleep our cortisol levels lower, our fight or flight response can relax, and our body rests, grows and repairs itself. Start your wind-down routine with a warm bath, make a warm drink, get into bed an hour early, and lay down with a good book/guided relaxation audio.

WATER

Let’s hydrate and replenish our body. At least two litres of filtered water every day will help your body flush out toxins, maintain great digestion, increase energy and relieve fatigue, and improve your skin. Better still a pinch of Himalayan salt, will deliver minerals and electrolytes into your body and assist your body absorb the water you are drinking more effectively.

RESTORE YOUR GUT HEALTH

Start December with a mini guthealth cleanse. Your gut will sing a song of welcome relief by eliminating wheat, dairy and processed foods. The restoration will begin by consuming good fats, easy to digest food and bone broths; and good bacteria will work their magic by having fermented foods. A healthy gut means healthy skin. By starting the month strong we are setting ourselves up to finish strong.

BREATHE

Slow, calm deep breathing techniques can reduce stress, detoxify your body, improve digestion, increase energy and help you remain centred. Start your day, by mindfully making and sipping a cup of tea, while focusing on your deep in-breath through your nose, and slow out-breath through your mouth. Or as your day progresses, you can implement this practice at any time by taking a few minutes to pause, sit quietly and breathe.

GO TO THE BEACH

During summer, nothing beats a beautiful gift of the beach for our body, mind and spirit. The ocean breeze opens up our lungs, swimming in the saltwater cleanses our skin, watching the waves calms our mind and our soul feels restored with this magical interaction with Mother Nature.
