Gone to Guernsey: a boutique Spring break in St. Peter Port A short hop from the UK, with a mild climate, a unique culture and spectacular scenery, Guernsey is the perfect place for a short break as the island wakes up for Summer Nestling in the bay of St Malo, 70 miles from mainland Britain and 19 miles miles north of France, Guernsey is an island of unspoilt beauty and its location has created a unique mix of English and French culture. The second largest of the British Channel Islands, Guernsey is only 12 miles long and nine miles wide, so it’s easy to cover a lot of ground in a short visit – an island-wide 35mph speed limit makes cycling a safe option. It’s the best way to witness the dramatic shifts in scenery, too. The prominent feature of the North coast is harbours and fishing, the West is all wide, sweeping beaches and the South, a stretch of outstanding natural beauty with dramatic views featured in many of the Impressionist artist Renoir’s masterpieces. The East coast focuses on St. Peter Port, the island’s capital, with its bustling high street, indoor market ‘Les Halles’, cafes, bistros and the iconic

Castle Cornet. St Peter Port is a superb base from which to explore the coastline. The South coast, rugged and wriggly, is where most walkers, painters or photographers head – it’s an invigorating, inspiring place to be. Paths rise and fall, sometimes steeply and down hundreds of steps, but there’s usually a gentler option, too – and surprise views from the soaring clifftops. Narrow trails, bordered by wild flowers and dense hedges, alive with nature, run all the way along the coast from St Peter Port to Pleinmont at the south-west tip of the island, and there are plenty of pretty beaches to call in at on the way. A strategic post during the Napoleonic wars and the only part of Britian to be occupied by the Germans during World War Two, the island has a number of imposing watch towers dotted along the coast, as well as an Underground Military Hospital and German Occupation Museum.

Hotel Ziggurat, No.5 Constitution Steps, ST PETER PORT, GUERNSEY GY1 2PN

Not your average hotel, Ziggurat is in the heart of St Peter Port’s old town, at the top of lots – and lots – of steps. It brings something new to the island’s capital and offers a fresh take on holiday accommodation – for business or pleasure. It’s a sociable place to stay; somewhere to kick back, meet new people over shared food and to enjoy spectacular views. Owner Genevieve Langford, says: “We wanted to create something different for Guernsey and the food is a major part of that. The concept is simple, sharing and sociable. We serve mezze style sharing plates with Middle Eastern inspired flavours, all served in an artistic and aesthetic style. The interior style was inspired by fabrics and patterns from ancient Mayan, Aztec and Middle Eastern cultures and a ‘Ziggurat’ is a stepped shrine.”

GETTING THERE FROM CAMBRIDGESHIRE Guernsey is a 1hr 30 flight from London Stansted airport. The Channel Islands economy airline Aurigny operates daily flights.
