Nas minhas idas e vindas pelas estradas e caminhos da Chapada Diamantina, muitas vezes me deparei com pessoas como dona Santinha e seu Antônio, também indo e vindo de suas lides na roça. Por vezes, eu reduzia a velocidade da moto para seguir junto a esses personagens, com suas histórias... Não raro, eles tiravam da sacola, do cesto ou da carroça, o que tinham de melhor, para me ofertar. Eu usava o argumento da impossibilidade de carregar na moto para não lhes tirar o que tinham produzido naquele dia. Quem tinha menos é quem mais dava... No dia em que tirei a foto de seu Mizelino, estávamos de carro e não pudemos rejeitar a cana que ele gentilmente nos deu. É por este motivo que as pessoas neste livro têm nome, por serem especiais e me trazerem grande aprendizado.
In my trips around the roads and trails of the Chapada Diamantina I would often encounter people like Mrs Santinha and Mr Antonio, also coming and going in their daily activities in their ranches. At times I would reduce the speed of my motorbike so as to follow these persons around, accompany their histories…It was not uncommon for them to reach into their bags, baskets or cart and offer me the best produce they had. I would politely decline their offers, using the impossibility of carrying the produce in the motorbike as an excuse for not taking from them what they had produced that day. It was always that way, whoever had less, wanted to give more…The day I took the photograph of Mr Mizelino we were driving a car and we couldn’t decline the sugarcane he so generously offered us. It is for this reason that people in this book have names. They are special and have given me lots of lessons in life.

Esta cachoeira desce escorrendo pelas paredes de um canyon em forma de espiral, que vai se dividindo em quedas d’água até chegar à última e maior queda. Podemos vê-la, nesta foto, caindo em um imenso poço protegido por paredões que mais parecem um templo gigantesco, totalmente protegido da chuva. Cheguei a este ângulo depois de ter explorado todos os recantos desta cachoeira, à procura de uma foto diferente da que está na página anterior. Fiquei surpreso quando me deparei com esta imagem, depois de ter desafiado o frio e chegado ao outro lado do poço... Pensei estar diante do lugar mais incrível que tinha conhecido até aquele momento. No dia seguinte, equipado com uma câmara de ar de carro, voltei lá, desta vez com a máquina e o tripé. Para mostrar a grandeza do lugar, coloquei uma pessoa na cena.
This waterfall slides from the walls of the canyon in a swirl-like shape, dividing later into smaller falls until it reaches the final and bigger fall. In this photograph we can see this final fall reaching a big well protected by walls that resemble a giant temple, sheltering it from rainfall. I got this angle after exploring all the corners of this fall, aiming to capture a different photograph to the one from last page. I was pleasantly surprised by this image, after braving the cold water and reaching the other side of the well…I thought I had reached the most incredible place I had ever been to. The next day, I went back equipped with an inflated inner tube car tyre and a tripod. In order to emphasise the greatness of the place, I chose to include a person in the final image.

No período da Quaresma, pessoas cobertas com lençóis brancos seguem ao redor da vila de Igatu, em silêncio, e param em pontos estratégicos, onde, acompanhadas pelo som da matraca, entoam cânticos em coro, em homenagem aos seus mortos. Isto se repete três vezes na semana até a Sexta-feira da Paixão. Aproveitei a última luz do dia, montei o tripé, posicionei a câmera para cima, valorizando assim a cruz e os tons das cores do céu. Para capturar a imagem das “almas”, usei dois flashes. Com a ajuda de Gilmar Novais, meu assistente, ambos fizemos três disparos enquanto as “almas” mudavam de lugar e a máquina captava a luz celeste, numa exposição de 90 segundos. O meu objetivo era registrar as pessoas em vultos. Por sorte havia estrelas e nuvens em forma de véus.

This religious ritual takes place in some villages in the Chapada Diamantina, during the Lent period. People covered in white sheets walk around Igatu village, in silence, stopping at strategic points at which, accompanied by the sound of a rattle, they sing chants in homage of the deceased members of their families. This happens three times a week until Good Friday. I took advantage of the light at the end of the day, I set up the tripod, place the camera pointing towards the top, valorising the cross and the colours of the sky. In order to take the image of the “souls” I used two flashlights. With the help of Gilmar Novais, my assistant, we took three takes while the “souls” changed place and the machine captured the light from the sky, in a 60-second exposition. My aim was to capture people as undefined figures, so as to better represent the spirits. Luckily there were stars and clouds in the shape of veils. www.decorarcomfoto.com Esta imagem foi construída a partir do movimento de rotação da Terra. Cada risco que vemos no céu é uma estrela. Para alcançar este resultado, deixei a máquina presa ao tripé, com o diafragma aberto por 5h1min32s. Este movimento aparente das estrelas, de forma circular, é visto no Pólo Sul celeste. Ao centro, podemos ver o Cruzeiro do Sul. Consegui esta foto depois de muitas tentativas, mais precisamente na nona noite em que dormi próximo ao Pico do Itobira, exclusivamente para registrar a imagem. O detalhe é que, pela posição das estrelas, a melhor época para fazer esta foto é em junho, exatamente quando as noites ficam nubladas e o frio é bem mais intenso. This image was constructed from the rotation motion of the Earth. Each and every line in the sky we see is a star. In order to get that result, I left the camera on the tripod, with the diaphragm open, for 5 hours 1 minute and 32 seconds. The movement of the stars, in a circular shape, is seen in the Southern Pole sky. At the centre of the image we can see the Southern Cross. I managed to get this photo after a few failed attempts, exactly on the ninth night that I slept close to the Itobira peak with the aim of getting this image. The best time of the year to get the effect I wanted, with the stars in this position, is actually during June, when nights tend to get cloudy and the temperatures drop quite a lot.

Comecei minha carreira fotografando casamentos. A partir de 2003 passei a me dedicar exclusivamente à natureza. Nestas páginas trago fotos de flagrantes de duas cerimônias que fiz sem ser visto. Acima mostro o nobre colega fazendo fotos ao ar livre dos recém-casados, numa praça em Ituaçu. À direita vemos uma cena típica de um casamento no interior, na cidade de Piatã. I started my career as a wedding photographer. From 2003 onwards I devoted myself to photographing only Nature. In these pages I bring some candids taken during some wedding ceremonies I photographed. At the top part, I show a colleague shooting some photographs of the bride and the groom in a square in Itaçu. To the right, we can see a typical scene from a wedding in the backlands, in the city of Piatã. 130
