From the President Jason Horner WoW! I cannot believe the New year is already here. I hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas and hopefully this year you can follow the New year’s resolutions you have made more strictly and achieve what you truly desire in your life. (“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”)

last year was truly a memorable year for your club. From parking 38 Porsches on the boardwalk, to receiving several awards at Parade, record setting new member socials, highly anticipated Air & Auto 6, a massive turnout for Turkeys in the Trunk, to ending the year just shy of raising $40,000 for our chosen charities. None of this could have been possible without members like you, I thank you all so very much! We will be starting 2016 off with our annual holiday party and then I will be looking forward to the weekend trip in April to tour the Ingrams collection. The list of members interested in attending Parade this year in Vermont is growing, also Classics on the Green and Air & Auto 7 are also already on the calendar along with at least one additional Drivers education event to be held at the new Dominion Raceway. The voting for our board members has closed and again I would like to thank those who volunteered to serve on the board, the voting committee: Brian Faulkner, Jerry Burks, and Brian Bremenstul, along with Kathy Thomas and Marco estrada for running a smooth online election process, and to all the members who took the time to go online and vote. I look forward to meeting with the new board members real soon and to the appointing of their assistants. Which brings me to if you would like to serve as an assistant please feel free to contact me or any of the current board members on how you may serve in one of these HIGHly CoVeTeD positions. A final thanks for your continued confidence in me as your club President. I look forward to another successful year and have no doubt that 2016 will be another great year of camaraderie, fun, and community service. This is your club…please help make it what you want it to be. Please do not hesitate to contact either myself or any other board members with any new ideas, events, or activities you may have or would like to see. Happy New year! let’s create some memories,

Membership Update By Ken Thomas, Membership Chairman Since PCA has closed the books on 2015 membership activity, I want to share our First Settlers results. We had a GReAT year! First Settlers ended the year with 649 primary members. That is growth of 34 members or 5.5%. This result is a combination of a small increase in the yearly average new members and an increase in member renewals.

SPOTLIGHT Name: Beatriz Rodriguez lopez Where do you live? Virginia Beach, VA

Thank you for all you do to recruit new members and to retain existing members. When I follow up with new members, the one comment I hear most often is that they felt welcomed at their first event - usually breakfast - and that people were friendly and engaging.

What do you do for a living? Senior Medical Technologist for Sentara Hospital. Tell us about your family. I have two sons the eldest is Giovanny (29) and Rudeck (21). I have one granddaughter Naiara. I am engaged to Arcangelo De Venuto. My three sisters and mother reside in Puerto Rico.

Saturday night cruise-in finds new home at Landstown Commons Reprinted from The Virginia Pilot, May 2014 By larry Printz Editor’s Note: First Settlers Region has joined the local car culture by deciding to help keep this local Car Cruise-In viable and fun! Our region of the PCA will be one of four car clubs to help run this monthly event at Landstown Commons at the intersection of Princess Anne Road and Dam Neck Road in Virginia Beach. The heavy lifting is done by the shopping center management as described in this article reprinted from 2014. Our responsibility is to “host” the event and collect the entry fees that will go to First Settlers charities. Be watching for a schedule for the year and we will ask for volunteers to sign up for each month:

It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!

NEW PCA/FSR MEMBERS Ken Thomas - Membership Chairperson Welcome to our new members and the transfers in to First Settlers Region. We hope you enjoy the people, Porsches and events and encourage you to come to an event, make some new friends and experience what your club has to offer.

What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? I enjoy exercising, gardening, listening to latin music and latin dancing and spending quality time with the ones I love, my family.

As you know, Saturday Night Fever, the Saturday night cruise-in held at Jenro's Diner in Virginia Beach since the mid-1980s is now a memory. Centrecorp Management Services, which manages the Haygood Shopping Center, where the event was held, said the cruise-in generated security problems and drew complaints from other tenants. After the landlord imposed fines, Jenro's stopped promoting the cruise-in. Then, last month, the diner shut down. Mike lambaiso, owner of Jenro's, said he plans to revive his cruise night when he reopens the diner in Portsmouth.

1969 911 T 2014 Cayenne 2012 911 S

In the meantime, John Herbert, special events coordinator for the Virginia Chevy lovers Club, has stepped into the breach. last summer, Herbert said he and his fellow club members noticed what was happening at Jenro's. He said their club had no such problems with their shows, which were held at the landstown Commons shopping center at Princess Anne and Dam Neck roads in Virginia Beach. The club enjoyed a good relationship with the company that managed the property, Inland Diversified Real estate Investment Corporation. More importantly, club members liked the venue.

"our goal is the health of the retailers and to ensure that their sales are strong," Denard said. "For us, it's important to have spaces occupied and retailers doing well." That's why Inland Diversified isn't a passive partner. The company not only pays for security during the event, they work with retailers to develop promotions aimed at increasing foot traffic. They also provide freebies to show participants. While Denard wouldn't disclose how much the event will cost the company, past experience shows that these shows are a marketing cost that helps tenants. "I believe it helps," said Melissa Fossee, one of the managers at Finn McCools. She said the restaurant saw as much as a 25 percent increase in business last year during the cruise night's trial run. This year, the cruise-ins start next Saturday from 4 to 9 p.m. Participants will be getting freebies as well, although show organizers want to keep those a surprise. The first 50 participants each week will receive a dash plaque. Bruce Silverman, also known as DJ Silver, will spin music from the '50s through the '80s. In addition, merchants are expected to offer discounts, just as they did during last year's trial run. Three car clubs – Virginia Chevy lovers, Beachcombers Corvette Club and the Custom Classic Corvette Club – will run the show on a rotating basis. (And now First Settlers Region of the Porsche Club of America!) Cost to participate is $2. The money will be donated to charity. For his part, Herbert said he is excited. He wants the new cruise-in at landstown Commons to become the spot to cruise to on summer Saturdays. "If we play it right, this will be huge."

landstown Commons is filled with big box retailers. Bored spouses can shop while their car-loving partners are holding court with their car or truck. There also are many restaurants, including longhorn Steakhouse, Peter Chang's Chinese Bistro, Finn McCools Fishhouse and Tavern, and Highway 55 Burgers Shakes and Fries. So last summer, Herbert approached Inland Diversified officials about holding an eightweek trial run of Saturday night cruise-ins in the center behind Finn McCools. The company, based near Chicago, was receptive to the idea. Unlike Centrecorp, Inland Diversified commonly welcomes cruise-ins in their shopping centers around the country. "We find them to be wholesome family events that bring people to our properties and give us something extra," said Maureen Denard, vice-president and director of marketing for Inland Diversified.

MERRY MEMORIES REALIZED: DAYTONA ROLEX COURSE

store our stuff and relax. Thursday afternoon, we took a corner by corner tour of the track. If you follow with the track map also with this article, it will make more sense. The pit lane is VeRy NARRoW and twisty with a white stone wall to your right. It is hard to see over the wall so there is a flag station at the end of the NASCAR pits to release you onto this 35 MPH pit lane. The tour stopped at various points in the infield, pointing out likely apex points and where the track was risky. There are not a lot of visual references on the Rolex Course.

By ed Merry In early December, I achieved a long time dream: “Drive Daytona”. By doing so, I have also filled my "Bucket list" by driving the famous tracks of the east and, second, I have joined the 150 mile per hour club. I have a photo to confirm it! And finally, I have felt the NASCAR banking at speed. After two days on the banking, my neck was sore from the sustained about 3 to 4 G loading there. Daytona International Motor Speedway;perhaps the most famous American east Coast track. The facilities are wonderful! Home of the Daytona 500 starting the NASCAR season and the Rolex 24 Hour endurance race starting the sports car season. The Rolex course is about 3.56 miles long with 12 turns. It is very fast with the NASCAR banking making "straights" of a major parts of the sports car course. I had been a spectator of the 24 Hour endurance race three times and wanted to drive it for myself. And on 4-5 December, 2015, I had a chance to drive this iconic track.

leaving the infield, we stopped after NASCAR turn 1 (turn 7 on the Rolex Course) and tried to walk up the 31 degree banking there. yes you can walk up the slope but is it very hard to walk down unless you go diagonally. Furthermore, your car needs to be going over 70 MPH on the banking to keep from crabbing down onto the flat apron. The car felt like it was pulling about 3 G’s on the banking and my neck was sore after two De days. Next, we spent some time at the “Bus Stop” on the back straight (turns 9 and 10). Daytona has added 3 inch white "turtles" bolted over the orange "gators" on the inside of turn 9b and 10a. If you are accustomed to driving over gators at other tracks, don't do it at here. The Bus Stop is considered the trickiest part of the course. We were warned about trail braking for this turn after coming off the banking in NASCAR turn 2 and the high speed back straight. After the long braking period, the rear suspension is unloaded and the car can snap around suddenly.

“Who and What” were there? The (“31 degree banking makes Daytona unique”) only annual Driver's education (De) event at Daytona is the first weekend in December put on by the AUDI Club of ohio. I learned it took the AUDI club eight years to work through all the details and set up this very professional De event. There was a very interesting assortment of cars on hand for this event. In the next garage were several Ferrari Challenge race cars being sorted out for the upcoming 24 Hours event. on the other side of our garage were no less than three Cayman Inter-Series Cars. Near us were parked about a half dozen new GT4s. Plus a couple of new Porsche GT3RSs. Finally a large group of the Mustang/Cobra Club of ohio with Cobra GT350s and GT350Rs. Plus ed and Brenda Merry in the “Blue Streak” - our Cayman R. The Vacation in Daytona. With knee surgery planned for mid-December we wanted a vacation first. So Brenda and I went down to the New Smyrna Beach just south of Daytona and had a few quiet days of relaxation. Mixed rain and sunshine, high in the mid ‘70s. It was a wonderful and relaxing time. My brother and his wife came down from Augusta, GA to join us and camped near the Dayton International Speedway. We had the best family time together in quite a few years. on Wednesday we toured the impressive Kennedy Space Center. And, of course, we had some wonderful seafood. My brother even got several laps of the Rolex Course with my instructor. lots of smiles! on Thursday morning we did the registration and tech inspection. We were glad to have garage number 20 to keep us out of the wind and rain a give us place to

The tour stopped at the start/finish line and we all had a chance to sign our names on the start finish line itself with a paint stick. The start/finish banking is just 18 degrees. Finally, the banking is just 3 degrees in the infield. I thought I would be intimidated with transitions onto and off the banking, but being smooth and under power, they felt fine.

Passing and Point Bys. All point by's are done with turn signals inside the car and only to the right. In my group, # 3 or intermediate group , passing was restricted to three infield segments plus the banking. Most passing was done after you exit the infield (Turn 6 or NASCAR 1) to the braking points for the Bus Stop. This is a 7/8 mile passing zone. Slower cars down low and faster cars up top. The final passing zone was almost mile long from exiting the Bus Stop, through NASCAR 3 and 4 (turns 11 and 12) until past the Start / Finish line. Again, passing was (“Garage time”) always to the right with a distinct point-by.

(“Ferraris camped out next door”)

The map below will help as we discuss the course corner by corner. Most are patience, late apex corners. The infield is flat, period. Turns 1-3: Turning into the infield, I'd brake in a straight line after the Start Finish line, dropping from just over 150 to about 70 MPH. I used the end of the red catch fencing after the Start / Finish line as a turn in marker. I used the white painted tire stack at the end of the pit wall as the apex. Then I could treat the course

Car Care C rner $ave Big On Porsche Key Fix

AMERICA’S AMERICA ’S Battery Supplier

by Jim liedman A couple of weeks ago I was headed to the garage to hop in the 911 and noticed that I had lost one of the buttons in my key head, the one for locking and unlocking the doors. luckily, I found it in my pants pocket but couldn’t repair it due to the little plastic arms that hold it in being broken off. Pushing in the space where the button was would not operate the locks. The immediate fix was to put the button back in its space and wrap a piece of (nearly color matched) duct tape around it. It worked perfectly, but hey, a Porsche owner can’t go around with duct tape holding his key together can he? Heck no!!

SSame ame D Day ay SShipping hipping

A call to Checkered Flag Porsche Parts resulted in the expected bad news. A complete key, (as in, if you lost yours), would be $530 which includes the head, (with chip and transponder), getting the blade cut, and programming of your keys, (including your good key which would also need to be reprogrammed). “Can’t I just buy the shell with the buttons in it”, I asked. “No, you must buy the head with chip and transponder which would be $216.18. Since you have the chip and transponder in your key, you could just swap it with the chip and transponder in the new key and save the $170 programming charge”. Well that made me feel a lot better! I said, “No thanks, I think I’ll check around and see if I can’t find something else first”.

Ski’s For: High Perfomance Cars/Boats - Motorcycles - Jet Ski’s Golf Carts - Emergency Lighting - Alarms/Security UPS Systems - Power Toys Toys - Computers Medical Instruments - Wheel Chairs & Scooters

After checking the internet, I found the shell with the buttons in it and a blank blade on ebay for $15.72 including shipping. yeah!! I figured even though I’m ordering it from Wang you in Guangdong, China, I didn’t have much to lose. Sure enough, a week later the parts arrived and it took me less than five minutes to unpack the shell, pop off my battery cover (with buttons), clean up the inside of my key, place the new button in my old battery cover and snap it together. All the parts look and feel exactly like the genuine Porsche parts, so now I have more spare key parts, just in case, (see pictures)

Cell Phones - T Two-way wo-way Radios - Etc.

If you need to just change your battery, it’s easy to pop the battery cover off with your thumbnail, then remove the silicone button pad which holds the chip /processor to reveal the battery and small rectangular transponder. If you lose your key, the complete key can also be found on ebay for around $100 which includes the chip, transponder and blade. But, you will have to get the key cut and the chip programmed which would be at least $170, so check first to see if the Porsche dealership will program the key before you buy it. Keys and key parts for most Porsche models were also available. I hope this little article was helpful and may save someone a few hundred bucks!

PCA Adopts the 944 Cup Race Series: A New Era for the Production 944 by Patti Mascone P R I N T I N G

With PCA racing absorbing the 944 Cup, a new light has shined on the front-engine Porsche, which “lived” – its first life – from 1976 to 1995. The first 924 hit U.S. shores in 1976, as Porsche went after younger buyers, who often seemed to be the collegeaged children of 911 owners! As the manufacturer tinkered, iterations included each of the following: 924 (and Turbo), 944 (and S, Turbo, Turbo S), 944 S2, and 968.

A few were specifically built for racing – 31 factory-built 1986 944s were constructed for the Rothmans Challenge Series in Canada, driven by the likes of Goodyear, Tracy, and Fellows. Although you may see one of those remarkable models in 944 Cup today, you don’t need one to go racing. 944 Cup founder Dave Derecola’s goal remains, 14 years after he founded the series: Take the various 944 models, put them in Cup and Super Cup classes, and level the playing field in each class with weight. Dave, a PCA member from South Carolina, will retain his position as series director, joining PCA’s racing committee.

PRINTING Your one stop for full color and spot printing. You need it in print? We’ll get it done. We also produce a full line of business forms and company communication materials.

A model that may have been relegated to extinction has gotten a second life, certainly one more suited to Porsche’s racing bloodline. In developing rules and running the series since 2002, Derecola’s emphasis has been on keeping drivers engaged and helping new drivers enter the fold. The series has flourished, even as the U.S. economy has waxed and waned.

Turns 3 -5. Turn 3 is another late apex hairpin. you can track out using an access road as overrun. Turn 4 is the "Kink." I began braking lightly for this, then getting back on the power for turn 5. But as my confidence increased, I soon was taking the Kink flat out but smoothly. This segment was the best infield place to point by faster cars, which I did often. Turn 5. This is a very late apex and I need to hug the inside gator almost to the end before adding power. If I go back to Daytona again, Turns 3 and 5 are the ones I needed to work on more.

The PCA-944 Cup relationship begin in 2006, when PCA created SP1 (spec), SP2 (Cup), and SP3 (Super Cup). The two organizations ran joint events, with 944 Cup getting split starts if grids reached 15, a level the group regularly exceeded. By 2013, a record 60 entrants took to Watkins Glen, with 17 racers crossing the border from Canada; in 2014, the Midwest chapter joined 944 Cup, jump-starting series expansion at the Circuit of the Americas. Sponsors have been generous: The most popular “awards” for 2015 were the bright-red bicycles, given to national champs Robbie Wilson (Cup) and Karl Poeltl (Super Cup) by the Pikesville Bike Shop. each winner was also given a year of entries into the Pirelli World Challenge.

(“ed Merry piloting his “Blue Streak” through the Bus Stop at Daytona”)

Grassroots Motorsports remarked in 20001 that a water-cooled Porsche could be purchased for the price of a “used Honda,” and the car continues to appear on the budget-racer list. over 130,000 of these Porsches were originally sold in the United States2. of those, just over 56,000 were 944s, sold from 1983 to 1989; the largest production year was 1984, followed by 1986. Unlike other cars of that period, owners kept their 944s drivable, so not only is the model available, a network of parts suppliers (used/refurbished, after-market, oeM) exists to support the amateur 944 racer.

The Conclusion. It was a wonderful time and the best facilities yet. Daytona is a very well executed De program but pricey. My best lap time was 2:23:66 with an average of 98.7 MPH for the 3.56 mile course. My best documented speed is 153 on the front straight and 151 on the back straight. In the last session, after I was cleared Solo, I played "follow the leader" with my instructor. A good learning technique that I really enjoyed. Sometimes I would lead and sometimes he would lead. What's Next? I don't know. Perhaps I may add Mid-ohio or Road America to the Bucket list. Still and all, I think our own Virginia International Raceway (VIR) is an excellent track and better for learning driving techniques with more complexity than Daytona. But not as fast. Drive safe and enjoy your Porsche! They are wonderful cars. This dream coming true once again confirmed that it is more than just the cars, it is people.

Turn 6 is the most important corner on the course as it sets you up for NASCAR 1 and 2 until the Bus Stop. A patience corner again, I used a spot just past the corner station as an apex. Note this was the corner station for Black Flag and the Checkered Flag. Adding power, I could feel the car shift from 2nd the 3rd BeFoRe I actually startedup the banking. If I got turn 6 right, I would see about 151 MPH on the back straight before hard braking for the Bus Stop. By the way they Cayman R has better brakes than any Cobra I met.

Recently, Super Cup has grown, with grids at the 2015 championship equaling those in Cup. To keep costs down for Super Cup/SP3, explains Derecola, “we kept in place the basic concept that you get to run a stock engine.” With ebay and other sources for finding cars and parts, this class has proven to be quite attainable, as well, although drivers must be savvy about the cross-pollination of parts across later Porsches.

Here I documented 153 MPH with my video camera as I approached the Start / Finish line. leaving the Track: As you came off the banking and were going into pit lane, you'd slow, then drop down onto the flat apron beyond NASCAR 4. Pit lane speed here was 45 MPH. After the time on the banking, 45 MPH felt incredibly slow.

Classic 24 Hour at Daytona – 2015

Remembering Mark Hiby

What’s precious to you is precious to us.

The First Settlers Region experienced the

untimely loss of one of our members last year. Mark Hiby was a father, husband, car guy and friend to very many people. He was an active member of our club and always ready to pitch in to help anyone.

family as they mourn their loss. Mark will I will admit that my favorite Porsche cars and my favorite Porsche racing cars may not be the same models. So, when I started to see that there was a Historical Sportscar Race at Daytona in November 2015, I got interested. even more so when the entry list showed six Porsche 962 racers signed up, along with 200 other vintage racers of all makes. The Porsche 962 and 935 turbo racers that entertained us at all hours of the night back thirty plus years ago would be racing again at Daytona’s road course. Sounds like a long weekend in Florida to me. They call the race the “Classic 24” and it is supposed to be the vintage version of the Rolex 24 held in January each year. except it comes without the crowds, parking problems and sometimes bad weather that the Rolex can offer.

I attended this race both years that it has been held in Daytona - 2014 and 2015 - and find it a downright pleasant experience. Florida is a good place to be in early November. Watching these cars racing on the Daytona road course as twilight approaches is just hard to describe. Seeing the turbo flames and the brake rotors glowing is worth the trip.

The vintage racing scene is growing and the internet can provide many venues all over the country. The Classic 24 is presented by Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) find them on the internet. The Daytona event is planned for a bi-annual schedule with the next one planned for 2017. However, If driving Interstate 95 in not your thing, and you don’t want to wait until 2017, our very own Virginia International Raceway (VIR) has two vintage races on the calendar in 2016 held on May 28 – 29 and September 24 – 25.

FSR High Performance Driver’s Education HPDE Program for 2016

1960’s Ford GT40s through Porsche’s landmark 962 of the 1980s, the Daytona Prototypes of the 21st Century plus some superb Florida weather made the inaugural Classic 24 the perfect event for the competitors and spectators.

By Marco estrada, Driver’s education Chairman The First Settlers Region (FSR) 2016 High Performance Driver’s education (HPDe) season promises to be the most exciting in recent years. With three planned Driver’s education (De) events, we are planning a great track year for our region members.

The success of the inaugural Classic 24 at Daytona with strong international interest and participation will see (“Another famous name in Porsche racing history”) HSR’s Classic 24 return to Daytona International Speedway on November 14-15, 2015.

As many of you know, our traditional Spring De dates are no longer available at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR). The management team at VIR had an opportunity to bring in the MotoAmerica (AMA/FIM) Mid-Atlantic Superbike Doubleheader in 2015, but their available dates happened to coincide with the FSR Spring De. The same is true for 2016. As a result, the FSR Spring De at VIR is now a Summer De and we have secured July as our date going forward. our first July event took place during the weekend of 11 and 12 July this year; the event was very successful with great attendance. For 2016 however, VIR will not be available to FSR during our scheduled dates in July because of required unscheduled track preparations for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

“In 2015 spectators will again see cars from all six decades of the 24 Hours of Daytona in the second edition Classic 24,” said Hinton. “The Classic 24 at Daytona will then become a bi- annual event with its third running in November, 2017. “From 1971 through 1986, the American championship sports car season had its traditional finale at Daytona,” said Hinton. “our ticket sales told us the passionate fans of the great sports cars from Daytona’s past still exist and have been waiting a long time for an event like the Classic 24.”

With all the background information out of the way, the FSR De committee is pleased to announce the tentative 2016 HPDe schedule. Although we cannot call this the “official” schedule yet because of pending contracts signing, etc. it is expected that these dates are going to be confirmed very soon.

2016 FSR HPDE Tentative Schedule: 30 April – 1 May 2016: Dominion Raceway, 6501 Dominion Raceway Ave., Woodford, VA 22580 9 July – 10 July 2016: Dominion Raceway, 6501 Dominion Raceway Ave., Woodford, VA 22580 Sep 16 – 18 Sep 2016: Virginia International Raceway, 1245 Pine Tree Road, Alton, VA 24520

(“RS Spyder raced in the prototype class at le Mans”)

As you can see, there are many factors affecting the FSR HPDe Schedule for 2016. Some of these factors are temporary - like the Dominion Raceway event in July - but fully expecting to be back at VIR in 2017. Some are permanent; our new Spring De will be at Dominion Raceway in April/May each year. Although our HPDe venues and schedules may have changed we will still plan to continue providing an “Intro to HPDe” on the Saturday of each event as well as host Charity/Parade laps each day during every event. As usual, I thank the De Committee for all their great efforts in putting this program together for our region members. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for us, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Here Comes 2016!

Turkeys in the Trunk!! By Josie Grandfield The best word I can think of to describe “Turkeys in the Trunk” is fabulous!! The day includes a little bit of everything that is fun about being in the Porsche club all rolled up together. It brings together a great group of fun loving and caring people with a common bond of cars, camaraderie and community. It includes driving, talking, eating, drinking, giving, story-telling, charity, caring and, yes, some wonderful cars! like I said, it was fabulous!! The last major First Settlers Region event for 2015 was “Turkey’s in the Trunk” and this year exceeded all expectations for being a fabulous event! The member turnout was outstanding with the “weigh-in” production line through the Checkered Flag Service Bays running at high RPM. Volunteers pitched in to unload the trunks, weigh all of the turkeys and canned goods, then reload the trunks to make room for the next Porsche in line. The enthusiasm was electric and the entire place buzzing with excitement and car talk!

By the time you read this the Annual Holiday Party will be history. you can read about this event, held again at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, in the next issue of the “Horizontally opposed”. This event is a great time to gather in a bit more formal setting than the paddock at VIR or the Silver Diner in Glen Allen. It’s also the start of our charity program with the always fun White elephant Auction. you can count on this event again in January 2017 so it’s not too early to put it on your calendar if you’re so inclined.

(“Porsche caravan down Virginia Beach Blvd. with police escort!”)

The line-up outside the service bays at Checkered Flag started to look like the entrance to the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel at rush hour but when everyone pitched-in we kept the line moving. I can’t say enough to thank John Hall and the staff at Checkered Flag for their support again this year. We truly could not run this event without their help. Plus the help from all of the people who saw a need to keep the food moving from trunks (and pickup truck beds) to the scales and back into the trunks as efficiently as possible. lots of busy hands made the “Parade of Porsches” move smoothly. After the weigh-in, we meet three of Virginia Beach’s Finest Police officers who briefed us on the plans to escort the Porsche caravan of over 40 cars from Checkered Flag four miles down Virginia Beach Boulevard to the Pembroke Mall and the Mayflower Marathon Food Drive. With the “measured” pace of the escort through the many traffic lights it took us awhile to get there but we arrived together and ready for the offload. As in previous years, the food drive volunteers were fired up and ready to off-load the Porsches. And again this year, we answered questions about which end of the cars the food was coming out of! We left the Mayflower Marathon with much lighter cars and headed south for a fun run through the Pungo area of Virginia Beach. We rendezvoused in the parking lot of Hot Rodder’s Cafe in Chesapeake to regroup for the drive. Unfortunately, we didn’t have much time to check out the hot rods in the parking lot or chat with the owners. We should come back! The weather was perfect for some brisk top-down driving and the setting sun highlighting the beautiful scenery. our destination was Murphy’s Irish Pub of Virginia Beach at 2914 Pacific Avenue at the oceanfront. The staff was ready for us with quick, convenient parking and a great spread of food in the buffet line. Because this event is all about charity, the club picked up the tab as an appreciation of our members‘ generosity with food donations.

Porsche Parade 2016 will be held at Jay Peak Resort in northern Vermont. There are too many details to write about in this article but start planning your summer vacation from June 19-26th. Parade is “An event” every Porsche enthusiast should attend at least once; however, be forewarned, it’s lots of fun and you’ll want to go back. The 2016 event in Vermont is generating lots of local interest and plenty of our members are making plans to attend.

our breakfast events expanded in 2015 to include the Fredericksburg area and will continue to be monthly events you can count on as an easy way to get out with your car and meet with Porsche friends. The Williamsburg area breakfast is held at Victoria’s Restaurant at the Williamsburg Crossing Shopping Centers at the corner of Rt 5 and Hwy 99. The Fredricksburg area breakfast is held at Tito’s Dinner at 1695 Carl D Silver Parkway just of I-95 near the Hwy 3 exit. This location may become more popular because of the close proximity to the new Dominion Raceway about 10 miles to the south. Both breakfasts are held on the first Saturday of the month beginning at 9 o’clock.

on the heels of Parade, is the second zone 2 track event from June 2426th at VIR. The Porsche Club Race is a great way to get close to and watch competitive racing for free. The drivers are amateurs but the ontrack action is intense. There is also an advanced Driver’s education event held as part of the Club Race. As with most Porsche Club events, volunteers are welcome! our second Driver’s education event of the year will be July 9-10th again at the new Dominion Raceway south of Fredericksburg. As mentioned earlier, VIR won’t be available for track events during the mid-summer in order for the management to complete some needed repairs. VIR needs to get ready for the IMSA/WeatherTech race on August 20-21st. This pro-series race is great to watch from the Porsche Club sponsored tent on the hill outside of Turn 4!

(“Rush Hour” at Checkered Flag for the food weigh-in)

Details of the annual “spring” Charity event are still in work. lots of ideas about the location and events are being considered. Stayed tuned for details and we hope to see you there!

The first Porsche Club sponsored track event of the year in our neck of the woods is the zone 2 Driver’s education event at the Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on March 18-20 March. This annual event is a very popular kick-off of the track season for most members and will be one of the few times to drive the Full Course at VIR with a Porsche sponsored event. For folks who like to drive through the countryside instead of the track (or maybe in addition to the track) ed Merry will be leading our Spring Fun Run in the Windsor and Smithfield area planned for Saturday March 26th.

(“The atmosphere at the Mayflower Marathon makes it fun!”)

The pace of events doesn’t slow down after labor Day. In fact, some of our biggest, most popular events happen towards the end of the year. our only Driver’s education track event at VIR is scheduled for September 17-18. Unfortunately you will have to make a tough choice since that is the same weekend as the “Classics on the Green” european Car Show at the New Kent Winery outside of Richmond. you win either way but plan to do something with your Porsche in midSeptember!

April will be busy with two major events to highlight on your calendar. First, we will be driving to Durham, NC to visit the Ingram Collection; one of the finest Porsche collections in the world. The Ingram’s are very accommodating and really enjoy sharing their amazing collections with like-minded enthusiasts. Highlight the weekend of April 22-24th on your calendar and look for registration details on our website and at www.motorsportreg.com. The tour is planned for Saturday but you can book a room with our group now and plan to make it a Road Trip Weekend in North Carolina and see some iconic Porsche cars!

Air & Auto Classics #7 is scheduled for october 15th at the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum. This really is a “must-do” event on our calendar! Besides being a great fund raiser for our charities, it a great combination of cars, vintage airplanes, music and fun people. Don’t miss it! “Turkeys-in-the-Trunk” is planned, as always, to coincide with the Mayflower Marathon on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This year the date is November 19th.

Second in April, our first Driver’s education event for 2016 promises to be particularly interesting because it will be held at a brand new race track. The Dominion Raceway is still under construction about 10 miles south of Fredericksburg just off I-95 but we’re optimistic it will be ready to host us on April 30th and May 1st. The layout looks interesting and the track is much closer to where most of us live. Don’t miss this opportunity to be one of the first drivers to experience a new venue that we expect to become a regular stopping spot on our calendar!

This is just our initial plan for 2016 with more events expected to be added. let us know if you have any ideas or would like to help run an event, fun run, rally, tech session, party or other excuse for us to have fun with our Porsches! Speaking of Activities, this is a good time to introduce our new Activities officer, Vince Canepa. Vince is an owner/corporate officer of a small business in California. He is a 1970 graduate of California Maritime Academy. He retired from the U.S. Merchant Marine after sailing 20 years, 15 as Chief engineer. He then spent 17½ years with the Ready Reserve Force Program at the U.S. Maritime Administration in Norfolk. He and his wife, Teresa, reside in Great Bridge and have four children and two grandchildren. He has been a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America for 43 years and has held a lifelong interest in Porsche. He became a PCA member in 2014 after purchasing his first Porsche, a 2014 Boxster S. Welcome Aboard, Vince!! And welcome to the “right” German car club..........

We’re planning the second annual Corvette/Porsche Showcase at Virginia Beach Town Center on May 14th. The event was fun and well attended last year but we didn’t quite reach our goal of having more Porsches than Corvettes on display around “downtown” Virginia Beach. Maybe we can change that ratio this year!

Thanks, once again, for your generosity in 2015 and looking forward to another great year of giving back to our community in 2016. Not bad for a little, old car club! (“Donating our check to the Foodbank”)

our friends from the Shenandoah Region are hosting the Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM) on June 3rd through the 5th. This annual event has been a highlight of the calendar for nearly 20 years and is sure to be a highlight of the summer!

The eastern (Hampton Roads) and Western (Richmond) area breakfasts are held the second Saturday of every month also starting at 9 AM. The eastern folks enjoy eating at Pop’s Diner at 1432 Greenbrier Parkway directly across from the Greenbrier Mall and the Western folks gather at the Silver Diner at 10890 W. Broad St, Glen Allen just east of the Short Pump Shopping area. If you can’t make it out for any other First Settlers events throughout the year, you should make a point to come to breakfast on a Saturday morning!

The numbers were very impressive this year! We raised $8,778 to the Mayflower Marathon during “Turkey’s in the Trunk”. When combined with the $5,703 raised during the Air & Auto Classic Car show, we donated checks totaling $14,481 to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia!! Plus, we offloaded 7,244 pounds of food from our cars!! That adds up to 10’s of thousands meals for deserving people at Thanksgiving. No other car club comes anywhere close to these numbers in terms of giving back to our community via the Mayflower Marathon. A special mention goes out the Dave and Karen McFadden who won the prize for bringing the most food by weight this year. It helps driving a Boxster S with two trunks! Wear that Porsche jacket in style; courtesy of Checkered Flag, of course.

the local shopping, eating and drinking. The tentative dates for FSR to host the Cruise-In are: April 16th, May 21st, June 11th, July 16th, August 27th, September 24th and october 8th. This new program should be lots of fun and easy too!

Vince Canepa has taken the lead from Bret Jacobson as our new Activities officer without skipping a beat and the calendar is already filling up!

Speaking of car shows, we’ve become part of the car clubs supporting the landstowne Cruise-In. The details are highlighted elsewhere in this newsletter and we’re counting on your support.

If you have any questions, comments or suggestions for us, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

family as they mourn their loss.

To keep costs down for Super Cup/SP3, explains Derecola, “we kept in place the basic concept that you get to run a stock engine.” With ebay and other sources for finding cars and parts, this class has proven to be quite attainable, as well, although drivers must be savvy about the cross-pollination of parts across later Porsches.

as to zoom out the Bus Stop at turn 10b. Again, I'd feel the 2nd gear to 3rd gear shift right as I stared to merge on the banking. Hard on the throttle all the way to the Start / Finish line.

Then I could treat the course

by Jim liedman A couple of weeks ago I was headed to the garage to hop in the 911 and noticed that I had lost one of the buttons in my key head, the one for locking and unlocking the doors. luckily, I found it in my pants pocket but couldn’t repair it due to the little plastic arms that hold it in being broken off. Pushing in the space where the button was would not operate the locks. The immediate fix was to put the button back in its space and wrap a piece of (nearly color matched) duct tape around it. It worked perfectly, but hey, a Porsche owner can’t go around with duct tape holding his key together can he? Heck no!!

What is your first Porsche memory? When I watched the movie “Selena” which was about a famous female latin singer’s life, I then fell in love with the red convertible Porsche that was in the movie. What is your favorite personal car-related story? I put a picture of my dream car a “Red Porsche Boxster” on my refrigerator for about six months so that I could look and dream about it. The lord blessed me with the same car in the picture a few months later.
