From the President Jason Horner I hope all of you had a safe 4th of July holiday. Priscilla, the boys and I recently returned from our first-ever Porsche Parade and I could probably fill up this whole issue talking about it. If you have never attended a Parade, I would highly recommend to attend at least one to enjoy all there is to offer. First Settlers was not only represented by us being there, but also by Alex Bell, Andrew Chisholm, Jerry & Pat Coffman, Mark & luana Hugel, Jim & Diane liedman, Alex & Amy llorent, David & Karen Mcfaddin, George & Pam Michaels, and eugene & Brenda Winston. (“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”) Congratulations to Marco estrada and Kathy Thomas for their 1st place win in the National Website Contest and also to George Michaels for taking second place in the CoNCoURS D'eleGANCe group preservation ( 924/944/928/968 Model years 1977 – 1995) with his fabulous looking ’91 928GT! Priscilla and I are already looking forward to next year’s Parade which will be held at Jay Peak, Vermont and, just announced, the 2017 Parade will be in Spokane, Washington at the Davenport Grand Hotel. If you were unable to attend Parade this year you still have the opportunity to attend the 2015 PCA escape to Rushmore, Black Hills, South Dakota in the fall. escape, like Parade, moves around each year and is typically held on the opposite side of the country from Parade. It is a multi-event weekend, with a national attendance list. While Parade has a competitive focus, escape is purely non-competitive. It is a socially oriented weekend focusing on camaraderie and friendship and is a great opportunity to show off your car, see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy the good will and fellowship of other Porsche owners. Though the family and I will not be attending this year’s escape we hope to do so in the not too distant future. I would again like to thank George and Pam Michaels for hosting the social event to meet and greet FSR’s newest members. These new member socials are shaping up to be events you do not want to miss. over 30 Porsches and 60 new and current members converged on the Michael’s cul-de-sac to enjoy a fantastic evening filled not only with great conversations, food and drinks, but also the chance to show off your knowledge of Porsche movie trivia by being able to name the type of Porsche in the movie. A huge thanks goes to Ken Thomas for introducing all of our new members, Josie Grandfield for making the goodie bags, and everyone else who helped in setting up and welcoming our newest members. Although the summer solstice has passed and our summer days are slowly getting shorter we still have some great events to look forward to and they will be here before you know it, mainly the Fall Fun Run, Drivers education at VIR, and the Classics on the Green in September to be followed by the 6th annual Air & Auto Classic in october. I hope to see you at these and our other events and again detailed event information and registration for all FSR events can be accessed via our MotorsportReg club page: www.fsrpca.motorsportreg.com. It is summer and the memories are just waiting to happen,

By Phil Grandfield you’ve probably heard about the brand new PCNA headquarters in Atlanta complete with a Driver’s experience track and museum. It’s located adjacent to the Hartsfield - Atlanta Airport and would be a great destination for a Porsche enthusiast. So I worked a very short visit into a planned trip to Atlanta to see what the fuss is all about. The trip to Atlanta was to see the Rolling Stones in concert at the Georgia Tech football stadium (the topic of another story in other setting but the concert was awesome!!). I didn’t have much time so my plan was to hop in a cab, swing by the shiny chrome headquarters, snap a few photos, buy a souvenir and decide if there is enough there to justify a longer trip. Turns out I had plenty of time. The taxi pulled up to the security gate, I introduced myself as an avid Porsche fan and PCA member here for a tour. Guard - “Do you have an appointment?”. Me - “No” Guard - “you need an appointment to come in. Sorry”. Me - “oh. Didn’t know that”. Me thinking “Don’t you know who I am??”
(“Porsche Cars North America Headquarters”)
So I directed the cabbie towards my hotel and got ready for the Rolling Stones... The bottom line: The PCNA HQ looks impressive from the outside but make sure you make reservations if you want to see the inside. HoRIzoNTAlly oPPoSeD

Porsche 911 Red Book, 3rd Edition
Safe Use of Powered Impact Drivers and Wrenches
by Patrick Paternie and Peter Bodensteiner.
By Scott Hoffman
Powered impact drivers and wrenches, whether electric powered of the corded or cordless type, or air compressor powered, provide considerable assistance in performing some common tasks. Awareness of the potential risks is necessary to gain the fullest advantage of powered impact drivers and wrenches. Powered impact tools are power tools that spin, hammer, and vibrate and therefore they are a power tool that presents hazards to our eyes, hands, arms, and other body parts.

Porsche's 911, one of the most iconic sports cars in the world, is also one of the most sought-after collectible sports cars. Potential buyers, collectors, historians, and armchair enthusiasts crave all the details that, in sum, make up the 911's DNA. Porsche 911 Red Book provides all of the critical information enthusiasts need and offers it in a convenient, portable package that can be carried to concours, auctions, club events, or anywhere that quick reference to accurate data is required.
The vibration aspect of the use of powered impact tools for long periods can lead to disorders such as Vibration Syndrome, Vibration-Induced White Finger, and even Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. These effects are the result of the vibration affecting muscles, tendons and nerves in the hands and arms. Avoidance of long-term use of these tools is generally the best prevention. As power tools that combine both hammer and spinning motions their potential for causing eye injuries is elevated. ANSI z78 certified safety glasses should be worn when using these tools to help prevent damage to your eye when the hardware you are rotating or the sockets you use with the tool break and shatter.
From the first 911 of 1964 to today's technologically advanced, classleading sports car, Porsche 911 Red Book offers all the data and detail desired by 911 fans. It provides an in-depth look at all the 911 versions including the Turbos, GT cars, and the limited-production specials that have collectively forged the 911 legend over the past 50-plus years.
The best way to ensure the that the sockets, extensions or hardware you are manipulating don’t shatter and send parts back in your face is to use the proper type. Never use common chrome-plated sockets and extensions with your impact tool. Although a very a common practice it often results in broken sockets and damaged hardware but could easily result in eye damage if you also aren’t wearing eye protection. Common chrome-plated sockets and tools are meant to be powered with your own muscle strength and won’t withstand the high frequency hammering and torque that powered impact tools create. Their brittleness will cause them to shatter. Impact wrench sockets on the other hand are made of softer, more flexible materials meant to absorb the shock created by the high torque hammering and spinning created by a powered impact driver.

If you use an impact driver to install lug bolts or lug nuts get in the habit of hand starting and then hand tightening the bolt or nut prior to the final tightening using the impact driver. By making this process a habit you’ll avoid cross threading the nut or bolt using the very high torque the impact driver creates. A cross-threaded lug nut or lug bolt has serious consequences if not known and corrected before driving. If your car leaves the grid and enters the track and gets up to high speed the crossthreaded lug nut or lug bolt can result in vibration, heat and perhaps lead to a stress fracture of the hardware or even culminate in the loss of the entire hub and wheel.

Those of us using battery powered impact drivers also risk encountering dangerous damage to the battery used to power the tool. Some battery powered impact drivers use the old style nickel cadmium batteries but there are advantages of added torque and battery life from the newer lithium Ion type batteries. lithium Ion batteries are known for their ability to suffer from catastrophic failure when the battery is shorted at its terminals or if the case is penetrated and the layers inside are shorted. When shorted these batteries will suffer from thermal run-away that leads to a very intense fire that is difficult to extinguish. To avoid damage and the subsequent fire properly protect the battery by capping the terminals and separating the battery from any heavy or sharp metal tools that could penetrate the case. If used and stored properly these tools and their batteries will last a long time.

A Different Perspective By Scott Hoffman
The allure of motorsports--its probably a factor in drawing many of us toward purchasing the cars we own, joining the PCA and participating in the types of club events that only a club like the PCA can provide. Some PCA members feed our “need for speed” by racing in Club Race or Autocross events, or by driving in High Performance Drivers education (HPDe) or rally events. However, many would rather not participate in motorsports due to the constraints of cost, time, or the risk of wear, tear and damage to our beautiful cars. There is another way to be involved in motorsports and it requires nothing more then a weekend of your time while providing the very best view of the racing action without actually sitting in a driver’s seat.
radio to let other workers know about on track incidents or infractions.
New Member Social - Eastern Style
Unlike the paid flaggers you might see at our PCA First Settlers HPDe events at the Virginia International Raceway, some club racing flaggers at many tracks typically work from the corners at near trackside level and not in the elevated stations at VIR. This not only gets the flaggers closer to the action to better observe the racing but also adds to thrill as all of your senses will experience racing at its closest without actually being in the seat of a race car.
It was a nice, warm late spring Saturday when George and Pam Michaels hosted the New Member party at their house in Virginia Beach. The weather brought out the crowd and filled the street to the point of needed parking directors! The unofficial count was over 30 Porsche and 60 members to include 18 new members!
As a volunteer flagger you not only get to see the races from up close but you become an integral part of the event. you ensure the races are safe, fair, orderly, and fun for the competitors, the fans and your fellow volunteers. Flaggers work as a team at each corner station. Most (“local PCA members flagging the Baltimore Grand Prix”) corner teams are comprised of two persons actually handling the flags but facing opposite directions, some crosstrack or down track safety personnel, and a Communicator whom makes all the radio calls. Team members will rotate through the The view from the bleachers as a spectator at pro races or even at various positions at each corner and sometimes to an adjacent local club events can be exciting but it’s not nearly as thrilling as the station. An experienced Corner Captain always leads corner teams. view from the other side of the fence. The “Different Perspective” I am asking you to explore is from track-side as a corner worker or flagger. Flaggers are the workers that communicate to the race car drivers using a set of colored flags that have specific meanings. Flaggers also communicate with other flaggers and race officials by
our PCA zone 2 and nearby Potomac Region along with their Club Race Co-Chairs will start requesting volunteers to help fill a variety of necessary positions at the PCA zone 2 Club Races in June at VIR as well as the 23nd Annual PCA Potomac Club Race at Summit Point Motorsports Park at Summit Point West Virginia currently scheduled in September 2015. The most critical need is for the Potomac Club Races is for flaggers. The first “Different Perspective” I asked you to explore is as a volunteer at PCA Club racing events at our local tracks. An additional opportunity I am asking you consider is to join the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and becoming an SCCA flagger to gain experience at SCCA events so that you will have training and experience prior to volunteering at our Club Races. local SCCA regions supply flaggers for the PCA Potomac Club Races at Summit Point but paid track flaggers work the zone 2 Races at VIR. The SCCA organizes, trains, and equips its flaggers for not only its own regional club races at our local tracks but is also tasked regularly for pro sports car or road races nationwide such as IMSA races at Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glenn, etc. even the recent Indy Car and AlMS pro races at the Baltimore Grand Prix used volunteer SCCA flaggers-- many from the Washington DC Region. As a volunteer flagger you will not only be trained properly by the SCCA to work at the regional club races but have the option to pursue this adventure at a higher level with the SCCA if you wish. It’s very addictive; just ask many of your fellow PCA members that also spend time Flagging for the SCCA. PCA has many members racing their Porsches or other cars in the SCCA so you’ll see some familiar faces and cars. What are the benefits of volunteering to flag at SCCA and PCA Club Races and events? Vegas when I found the right one. We changed our flight plan on the way home to fly into Atlanta and bring it home. Unfortunately we didn’t win big in Vegas to break even but the car is worth it. Would one day love to see Janice in a new Macan.
Name: Brian Woodard
MEMBER
Where do you live? I was born and raised in Smithfield. I love the small town feel of Smithfield. It is a great little place to come for a drive and enjoy the downtown area with all the antique shops. I am pretty familiar with the back roads of Isle of Wight so if you are ever out this way and want to try some out give me a call. I always enjoy going out for a drive.
What other Porsches have you owned in the past? In 1976, I owned a 1974 914-2.0. The car was Irish Green. I put a lot of miles on the car in the first year and a half. I recall I had a lot of problems with gas lines that ruptured, but no fires, thank goodness.
SPOTLIGHT
In 1997, I bought a 1970 914-6. It was Irish Green also.... I purchased it from a First Settlers member who later bought it back from me10 years later. even though he paid considerably more to get it back, I must say only about 15% of it was still the original 1970, as I had replaced almost everything on the car but the body panels. As a friend once told me… .”Don’t you know? All Porsches cost the same… you either pay it up front or on the back”.
What do you do for a living? I am a corporate pilot for General Dynamics electric Boat Corp. We manufacture nuclear submarines. I pilot the shuttle for the engineers mostly between Newport News and Groton, CT
What is your first Porsche memory? A friend of my parents who lived down the street from us had a 356 that went zooming by our house daily when I was 5 or 6 years old. I never forgot it.
Tell us about your family. Janice and I will be celebrating our third anniversary in November. I had been a bachelor for many years and then I met the love of my life. Janice is a retired Navy nurse and is currently a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at local pediatric office. She has two children. A daughter in San Diego and a son in Richmond.
What is your favorite personal car-related story? My brother is 13 years older than I am. He always had some great muscle cars of the early days. I can remember riding to many races with him. I was never sure if the races were the destination or the journey. It seemed the track cars never went as fast as we did just getting there. Do you have a favorite Porsche? I have a real affinity for the new 911 GTS and Boxster GTS.
What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? When Janice and I first met I owned a Harley Davidson. We rode the bike to Key West two years before we married. once we married, we decided we had enjoyed riding the motorcycle for over 5 years and no one had gotten hurt so it seemed a good time to sell it. We then bought the Porsche we currently own. We are both quite competitive and enjoy a good game of golf, ping pong, or tennis. We also enjoy getting together with neighbors for a monthly $10.00 poker night. Janice loves to entertain and is always planning this or that themed party (i.e murder mystery dinner party, moonlight and merlot party, minute to win it party to name just a few). I am game for anything if it involves spending time with her.
Describe your perfect Porsche day. even though Ferry Porsche said, “our cars are to drive, not polish”, I really enjoy detailing a car. I can spend the whole day messing around with washing, cleaning and waxing the car. I was thrilled to win first place in the Show and Shine at the anniversary event at Wintergreen last year. Janice and I can’t pass up a beautiful day when we can ride the back roads with the top down.

What is on your car-related bucket list? We would love to take one of the Porsche sponsored trips through europe in the long term. But short term, we would like to take a trip to Niagara Falls, catch the changing leaves in the fall and drive the “Tail of the Dragon” in North Carolina.
PCA Member since? July 2013, not long enough. First Settlers Member since? July 2013, again not long enough.
What keeps you in PCA? The camaraderie of the great people we have met in First Settlers. We really enjoy the overnight activities it give us a chance to get away for a weekend. We enjoyed the time-speed distance rally (although with our competitive nature we were at each other’s throats by the end. Thank goodness for the cold beer at the end). The fun runs are great too, love seeing the lineup of Porsches all going down the back roads. There is nothing better than airplanes and Porches together at the Air and Auto Show.
What kind of Porsche(s) do you drive? 2009 white Boxster. After selling the bike we wanted something we could enjoy like the bike. We love the smells and feel that goes along with open air driving… fresh cut grass, misty salt air, or the q u i c k temperature change when dipping into a shaded bottom. I spent a lot of time searching for a preowned Boxster. We were on vacation in

We have been working very hard to get word out to members in the Fredericksburg area that there will be more FSR events to make sure they can get the most out of their PCA memberships. We have been reaching out to members in the area, attending the monthly Cars and Coffee event in Fredericksburg, and posting our events in the Rennlist and Dorkiphus forums in order to get the word out as much as possible. The newly added monthly breakfast in Fredericksburg received its first significant attendance this month with 10 members, current and prospective, in attendance. Planning for the Fredericksburg breakfast began in December 2014 and the inaugural breakfast was held in April 2015. The first few sessions were attended by a few of the core members involved in getting the breakfast started but we were able to pull in some more members with the draw of driving to and seeing the new Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, VA. enthusiasm from the members to have PCA First Settlers events occurring closer to home in Northern Virginia has been outstanding and has been met with great appreciation.

There is also an active Porsche Club in luanda, a mixed group of foreigners and Angolans. The gathering I witnessed in May was a road rally to Mangais, a town about two hours’ south of luanda and home to the best of Angola’s three golf courses. Traffic in luanda must be experienced to fully appreciate its soul-crushing gridlock, so I’ve no doubt Porsche owners take every possible chance to exercise their
After the breakfast, we took a drive down to Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, VA. This track is located just south of Fredericksburg and, with some luck, is planned to host the First Settlers Region HPDe event in october. Upon arrival, we were met by the general manager, edwin Pardue, and he took us inside for some Dominion Raceway swag and went over the plans for Dominion. We also met with the President of Dominion Raceway, Steve Britt. Dominion Raceway will include a 2-mile road course, oval track, and a 1/8 mile drag strip. The race park is designed so that events can occur simultaneously (i.e. road course and oval track, oval track and drag strip) with the exception that the road course and drag strip events could not overlap. They are also in the process of signing a professional driver as their club pro – rumor has it that they are pursuing a Porsche driver! Dominion Raceway has begun construction of their main building which will be attached to the oval track that will house a food court, meeting rooms, oval track grandstands, and executive suites. They offer memberships to their Drivers Club, one local PCA member has already signed up, that will give them additional track time throughout the year, and they will have maintenance garages available for lease to interested parties. Additionally, they plan to host non-racing events such as concerts and drive-in movie nights in the oval track.

Members were excited at the possibilities and the enthusiasm for all things automotive that Dominion Raceway will provide to the region. We had had fantastic discussion with DR President and GM during this event (as well as other Fredericksburg area car events) and they understand and appreciate the importance of their relationship with PCA and the First Settlers Region. We look forward to the opening of Dominion Raceway and hope to build a strong relation between them and the PCA First Settlers Region.

Fast-backward to last fall. Carol and I were at a neighborhood party and were talking with Jim and Judy Brown. Jim asked me if I wanted to go to the F1 race in Barcelona the following May. My response was lukewarm because it sounded expensive and I didn’t think Carol would want to go. To my surprise, Carol and Judy began discussing and planning and involved Bob and Maria Kania who are also neighbors and also Porsche owners. Next thing I know, we are booked for a twoweek vacation and buying F1 tickets. The ladies did an incredible job of researching and planning the trip very inexpensively.
By Don Bryant I’ve done more traveling this winter and spring, and the trips have been farther away than normal. This winter I travelled to Bahrain for work for two weeks. While interesting and perhaps exotic, it’s not a place I would pick for vacation. We were treated well and people were friendly, but it’s just a big rock dropped in a hot bathtub. Middle of winter temperatures were lows in the 60s and highs in the 80s. I’d hate to be there in the summer. To break things up, I took my co-worker to the Bahrain International Circuit for the day on the Friday in the middle of the trip. This is a modern, world-class facility and a great venue for racing.
I know this is supposed to be about cars, but I feel that I need to share the highlights of the trip because it included so many things I never saw myself doing. A two-week vacation is very long – I’ve never taken one before and we returned a little exhausted because we did a lot of moving around and walked 8-9 miles a day on average. Definitely more exercise than I am used to.
I had done some reading and research to determine what was going on there and learned that there was a Club Race during the day and a “Drift and Drag” that night. I had no idea what a “Drift and Drag” is but it sounded better than another night at the hotel restaurant or nearby exhibition Avenue. So off we went for an adventure. Their version of a club race had two race groups: a 2000cc car group that had a whopping field of six cars and a 600cc motorcycle group that had 11 bikes. The car group had four Honda Civics, a Honda CRX, and a BMW e30. We watched one sprint race of each group. There was close competition in both, but it was a little anti-climactic watching six low horsepower cars on a world-class F1 track.

Trip Digest: Four nights in lisbon, Portugal with two day trips to Sintra and Nazare (location of the world’s tallest wave ever surfed). Two nights in Seville. four nights in Madrid with a day trip to Toledo. Five nights in Barcelona finished with the F1 race – The Spanish Grand Prix or Gran Premio de espana at the Circuit de Barcelona in Catalunya. We stayed in hotels and apartments that were very moderately priced. Continued on page 9
When we finished watching the club races, we drove over to the go-kart track, signed up, and raced. It was an excellent course with strong karts. There were two levels and we rented the higher-powered karts, which I believe had 12hp engines. I was not happy when my co-worker beat me by 1.5 seconds per lap. I blamed it on power-to-weight ratio. He weighs about 140 lbs and I weigh….more.
(“Georgeous 993 in Speed yellow”)
When we were done karting, we headed back over to the main circuit which includes a drag strip between the stands and the F1 circuit. As with everything else there, the drag strip is top-notch. The racing surface was the blackest, smoothest, stickiest asphalt I’ve ever seen. A young lady lost her shoe in it walking across. The racers were beginning to arrive when we got there. It was surreal seeing Ford and Dodge diesel dually’s towing 30-40’ Haulmark and Featherlight trailers into a paddock in Bahrain. We may as well have been in Bristol. This was the “Drift and Drag”, but apparently the drifters stayed home. We had stumbled upon a full-on NHRA-sanctioned drag race.
(“Jason Rountree’s winning Cayman R - Photo credit: Alex Townsend”)
I estimate there were 250 cars racing and it took over two hours to get through the first round of single-elimination. The cars started in the 10.5 second ¼-mile bracket, dropped down to 8.5 seconds, then switched to 1/8 mile and were doing 4 seconds in the 1/8 with top-fuel Funny Cars. This was my first drag and I learned hearing protection is required. There were lots of Fox-bodied Mustangs, a gorgeous ’65 Chevelle SS, and a few front-wheel drive turbo-charged VWs and Hondas. The most interesting was a three-seat dragster in which the driver took two passengers on an 8-second ¼ mile pass. The U.S. influence carried all the way through to the track food: Pizza Hut, Krispy Kreme, Starbucks, and KFC. As I mentioned earlier – surreal.

2015 Town Center Corvette & Porsche Showcase Porsche/Corvette Car Show Virginia Beach, VA First Settlers participated in the “first annual” combined Corvette/Porsche charity car show at Virginia Beach's Town Center on May 16th. The streets of Town Center were closed off and lined with Porsche's and Corvettes for this first ever event promoted by Beach Street USA. Cash prizes were presented to judged show winners, so the elbow grease paid off for some. But you didn’t have to be a concours winner to enjoy the fun. It was a great “downtown” venue with options to include shopping or enjoying a lunch at one of the many nearby restaurants. or just hang out and check out some great cars we don’t usually see at our events. Partially because it is our favored marque and because there was a lot of action in our section of the track, the SuperCup was a lot of fun to watch. Michael Ammermuller won the 14-lap race from pole and out-classed the field. Back into the field there was a lot of close racing with position changes and minor contact.
We toured many cathedrals, castles, and forts and a few museums. We fell in love with tapas and ate very similar meals for lunch and dinner – albondegas, patatas bravas, fried calamari, roasted octopus, local ham (similar to prosciutto), manchego cheese, tomato bread, etc. We broke this up with a couple of very nice dinners at seafood restaurants on the coast of Portugal and an Italian restaurant in Madrid. of course, the sangria and local beers were wonderful.

Richmond Porsche Meet 2015 By George Michaels of being an experienced RPMer: I know where to park to avoid being in the line of fire of the hotel’s sprinkler system; thanks go to the very helpful concierge for his sage advice. After a quick wash and stop for breakfast, I headed to the Concours at the beautiful riverfront home of Tred Spratley & Janine Collins. once checked-in at the registration tent, I headed to parking, where I found myself next to none other than PCA National Past President, Manny Alban and his wife, Roxanne, and amongst nothing but rear-engined cars. I asked the parking director if my 928 GT was in the right section.
(“Concours cars in a beautiful setting”)
over 100 sparkling Porsches lining the lawn along the James River on a beautiful spring day makes for quite a sight and a great way to spend a weekend. The 19th annual Richmond Porsche Meet (RPM), hosted by our neighbors in the Shenandoah Region, is a perfectly executed, low-key event that offers something for everyone. RPM creator Alex Smith hosted the first RPM in his backyard 19 years ago. Although that event was relatively small, it attracted an enthusiastic group of Porsche lovers, some of whom come back year after year. RPM has grown significantly since then and draws Porsche aficionados from well outside of Shenandoah’s borders. The current version of the event includes Friday car prep, dinner, the famous RPM Concours on Saturday with a catered lunch at “Café Carrera,” a gimmick rally/fun run, a tech session at euroclassics Porsche, an awards dinner, and an autocross on Sunday at Southside Speedway. This year’s event began with a casual gathering at Dave’s Auto Spa for pre-show car prep and socializing. While folks were at Dave’s, I was just arriving into town after a three-hour drive. My plan was to depart from Norfolk Naval Station (my work location that day) and figure out a route to avoid summer Friday traffic. The backup at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel six miles and VDoT was reporting that I-64W was completely closed somewhere in Newport News, so that scrapped my I-664 and Monitor Merrimack tunnel plan. Using my trusty Garmin and basic knowledge of which roads went where, I managed to get my way there via 17N and 258e, picking up 10N in Smithfield all the way to just 10 miles shy of the DoubleTree Hotel in Midlothian. Despite some light rain and mist, it was an enjoyable, mostly traffic free drive that I’d recommend if you’re headed to Richmond and not in a hurry.
After emptying the various compartments of our cars and setting up our folding chairs, Manny and I quickly filled out our grade sheets before the judges showed up. “I thought this was tops-only,” Manny quipped, as we filled out the multiple pages. “The event description does say that,” I told him, “but previous experience has taught me otherwise. These judging sheets look like they’re straight from a Parade Concours rebadged with the Shenandoah logo.” I welcomed it… a great prep for the Parade Concours in French lick Indiana a few weeks later.
10
The event wrapped up with a Sunday morning autocross on the 1/3 mile banked oval at Southside Speedway. The course proved fun and challenging for the 25 participants. Surprise, surprise… fastest time of the day went to none other than FSR’s Bobby Smith in his ’73 914 autocross machine! I skipped the autocross in favor of beating the traffic home, and a 6:30AM departure accomplished that goal. It was a fine ending to another great weekend at RPM. Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the event, which will no doubt prove to be a special one. Save the date now!
After some Q&A with Bob, Head Concours Judge Dave lasch took the podium to announce the winners. Not only was FSR well represented at the event, but on the Winner’s list as well, taking home three-of-six Best in Class awards!
Within twenty minutes, a team of five judges descended on my 928 and began their drill. I gave them a quick history of my ownership and answered a few questions as they scurried around the car. Five minutes later, they were gone, so I reloaded all my stuff into the car and proceeded to stroll around and take in the sights. A major highlight of the event was the presence of special guests, the Ingram family of Durham, NC and the Ingram Collection of Porsches. FSR members who made the trip to the NC Museum of Art in December 2013 will well remember seeing this fabulous collection and enjoying the Ingram’s warm hospitality. They were kind enough to bring to the event their 2015 918 Spyder and 1997 993 Turbo S in matching Viola Metallic for us to enjoy, and they were both quite the sight. Shortly after lunch on-site under the trees, fun run/gimmick rally participants gathered for a drivers’ meeting and received rally instructions for the route, which ended at euroclassics Porsche. Prizes were given to the top 10 drivers, three of whom were FSR members. After a short time perusing the euroclassics lot and discovering that it’ll take just under $60,000 to get you into a new Porsche (a Boxster) and $300 for optional Carrera GTS door decals (for 2 stickers!!) for your new 991 GTS, we proceeded to the service bay for a presentation on Porsche’s Active-Safe and Adaptive Cruise Control systems… high tech indeed. A representative from Xpel also gave a demonstration of their clear bra application on a new Boxster. Getting almost as much attention was a rare, 14,000 mile 1994 911 Turbo 3.6 in Guards Red, recently acquired by a customer and in a nearby bay for service. It still wore the original tires!
After check-in, I made my way to the Friday dinner at the Stonehenge Country Club, where a small group of us enjoyed cocktails and a tasty buffet. A 6:30 wake-up on Saturday necessitated an early return to the hotel after dinner for this attendee. The misty drive up from Virginia Beach that afternoon would require a trip to the car wash before the 9:00AM show time at the Concours. At my first RPM five years ago, I found a small, selfservice car wash less than two miles away (“Classic 356’s still draw a crowd”) from the hotel. It’s nothing special, but The awards dinner at Martin’s Grant Club House included cocktails everything works and I’ve had the place to myself every time; who else and a fine catered meal, after which we were treated to a short talk would be washing their car at 6:30AM on a Saturday? Another advantage by Bob Ingram. He recounted when he was bitten by the Porsche HoRIzoNTAlly oPPoSeD
bug, his various experiences in collecting and the philosophy of the Ingram Collection. He also made note of the many friendships he made over the years, calling out RPM founder Alex Smith and former FSR President Weldon Scrogham of G&W Motorwerkes, and his wife, Phyllis, who have perfect RPM attendance and have been event sponsors since day one! Bob’s wife, Jeanie, son Rory (who manages the Porsche collection and the Ingram Driving experience) and his family were also in attendance.

The level of excitement is very high at an F1 race. The crowds are huge, everyone seems happy and excited to be there, and 75-80% of the fans wear someone’s colors, with Ferrari Red being dominant.

The fun runs are great too, love seeing the lineup of Porsches all going down the back roads. There is nothing better than airplanes and Porches together at the Air and Auto Show.
