From the President Doug Worrall Summertime, summertime, sum-sum, summertime. Where did it go? We can’t be talking about September already! I hope you’ve been enjoying the beach and the pool. or maybe a cool mountain getaway. Summer is the time of year for ice cream and watermelon, backyard cookouts and baseball games. It’s also the time of year for our New Member Meet & Greet. Hopefully you were able to socialize with some new folks in Chesapeake and discuss some of the varied interests of our club members.

My son got married out in the western part of the state this summer and I was impressed by the bucolic setting. It reminded me that Virginia has some beautiful landscapes with beautiful roads that our cars love to be driven on.

Come enjoy some beautiful roads closer to home on August 5 when we’ll leave our monthly Williamsburg breakfast at Victoria’s for a Fun Run to Eric and Jill Cruz’s place. We’ll check out some of Eric’s cars and get one or two up on the lift for a Tech Session.

Then for the first time in a few years, our Time Speed Distance Rally is happening on August 26 in Williamsburg. Tom and Eleanor Bobbitt will be teaching a TSD class beforehand for those who are new to rallying. We’ll finish up the fun with a BBQ at the home of Rob and Michelle Calloway in yorktown.

The other places that Porsches love to be driven is on the track. If you want to watch some Porsches driven really well on the track, head out to Virginia International Raceway for the Weathertech Michelin GT Challenge August 26 and 27. you can sign up for the Porscheplatz area that will be set up there. you’ll enjoy all the perks that come with the Porscheplatz while watching the races from a great venue.

Then we come to September! Even though it’s called an autumn month, I like to consider it the 4th month of summer. My kids are all grown, so I don’t have school to think about. The water’s still warm and the weather is still nice. you can do anything that can be done in the summer and usually with a much smaller crowd. our Driver’s Education participants will be off to VIR for a 2 day DE on the South Course September 16 & 17. If you like your cars at a much slower pace (standing still), there is the Classics onThe Green car show at the New Kent Winery on the 17th also.

To finish out September, there will be Treffen Asheville on September 20-24. Treffen is the younger, smaller sibling to Porsche Parade. A gathering of Porsche enthusiasts to hang out with and share in celebrating these fine cars. And speaking of beautiful landscapes and great roads. Asheville NC ranks right up there with the best. So join some folks there or at any one of First Settlers other activities. After all-It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.

The engine is based on the one now used in the 580-horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S, but it's been fitted with larger turbochargers along with some other power-boosting changes. The GT2 RS also has rear-axle steering for improved cornering. This is a system that, at low speeds, turns the back wheels slightly in the opposite direction of the front wheels for tighter cornering and, at higher speeds, turns them in the same direction for greater stability.

The car has Porsche's seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

To save weight, this car does not have the small back seats found on more common versions of the 911. Many of the car's interior and exterior body parts are made from lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced plastics.

Everything I knew about TSD rallies, until recently, I learned from Jeremy Clarkson. I absolutely love the BBC television show Top Gear. It had a winning blend of car journalism and comedy starring Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. A 2010 episode featured the trio participating in a classic car regularity rally or Time Speed Distance rally. The show was hilarious but it did not completely explain how TSD rallies should be done. For that, I’ve asked FSR Rally masters Tom and Eleanor Bobbitt to explain the driver and co-driver roles. The Bobbitts began rallying in the mid-70’s and will share how they developed a winning team chemistry required to compete at the national level.

The object of a TSD rally is to drive a specified course at a specific average speed to arrive at a checkpoint on time.

Penalty points are awarded for arriving too early or too late; therefore, the team Navigator’s view with the lowest score wins. The event is quite safe because it utilizes regular roads and normal cars. Travel speeds are within the legal limits. In fact, rallies are one of the few events that PCA will allow 16 and 17 year olds to compete as codrivers.

TSD rallies have different competition levels depending on skill and equipment used. The FSR TSD Rally will be “seat of the pants” meaning participants can relax and focus on staying on course. Not much is required to compete; a clear mind, not too much caffeine, a few pencils to make notes, a clipboard with some paper, and a clock that can be set to the official time of the Rally master before the start. Smart phones work great. Math minded co-drivers are welcome to do the calculations but the odometer check should be sufficient for this event. Rallies can last all day or several days. The FSR TSD Rally is intended to be a fun event taking teams from Stonehouse to yorktown in half a day while learning the basics of rallying. on Top Gear, the trio participated in a 5-day classic car rally on the Spanish island of Majorca. While their budget antique cars provided numerous challenges along the way, the driver and co-driver interactions provided the most laughs.

Jeremy’s speedometer was broken and his co-driver spoke no English. James’ co-driver had absolutely no interest in following the instructions, timing their route, or listening to James.

Tom Bobbitt says a successful driver must maintain a steady speed and always be

aware of the speed required for that leg.

“It is important to emphasize that the route instructions and speeds indicated are precise, not approximate. Many beginners in a TSD rally run into trouble by not appreciating or following the precise directions. Eleanor Bobbitt says the co-driver must be constantly communicating with the driver and keeping the team on course. “It cannot be over emphasized that the team’s priority always has to be staying on course, even to the detriment of going too slow. A missed turn that is not realized until you have driven a mile down the road means a mile drive back to the course. At 30 mph, you’ve just lost 4 minutes. It would have been smarter to slow at an intersection, even stop, to discuss with your teammate and make the correct decision, perhaps costing 30 extra seconds.”

Tom offers more advice. “Another mistake beginner rallyists make is not memorizing and agreeing with their teammate on the meaning of the general instructions and definitions for the rally. The General Instructions (GI) are provided before the rally to allow the team to familiarize themselves with the definitions. The Route Instructions are provided just a few minutes prior to the rally start and will use precise language and words defined in the GI. During the driver’s meeting, the Rally master will answer any questions the teams may have. The FSR GI will be emailed to all registered entrants a week before the rally.”

How did the Top Gear episode end? By the end of the rally, the three teams developed a chemistry that allowed them to have fun. The slow and methodical James May and his glamour model co-driver had fewer penalty points than Jeremy or Richard.

“These things are meant to be fun.

Spending the day with a family member or friend, driving around on nice roads followed by a picnic should be lots of fun.” The Bobbitts and I hope to see you at the FSR TSD Rally on August 26th. Also, sign up for Rally School to get more tips for a successful day.

Volunteers are needed to help staff the car corral and tent for the two-day event. There are various shifts available both Saturday and Sunday August 27th & 28th. While the race schedule is not confirmed, times are generally available from 7:30am – 6pm (Sat) and 8am – 4:30 pm (Sun).

However these times could shift somewhat. Should you wish to volunteer at the event, we have 10 tickets for access to the race each day. Ken Thomas Fellow PCA and First Settlers Region members, do you know someone who is interested in being a member of our club but just has not yet found the Porsche of their dreams. If so, please share this information about PCA’s Test Drive Program with them.

Although membership in PCA requires ownership/lease of a Porsche or that you be in a Porsche-related business, PCA does offer something for those actively trying to become Porsche owners.

The PCA Test Drive program provides you a six-month subscription to Porsche Panorama, the club's national monthly magazine, and a temporary account to log on to the PCA website. The magazine provides news and feature stories covering all aspects of Porsche as well as technical articles that impart valuable information about the cars we drive. Crucially, the temporary website account gives you online access to hundreds of Porsches for sale by PCA members in The Mart, which is also featured in every issue of Panorama.

Although PCA Test Drive is not a full membership in PCA and does not entitle you to some member benefits (such as attending member-only events, voting, or becoming a member of a Region), Regions may welcome guests and you are encouraged to contact your local PCA Region.

A Rally- There is more than one kind!!

A car Rally has been described as an extremely large board game: public streets are the board, and your car is your playing piece. In each car, the driver and navigator(s) carefully follow instructions that direct them along a given course. There is a friendly competition at the finish to see which teams followed the course most accurately. PCA Rallies come in various shapes and sizes, but they are all non-racing events held on open public roads. Rally teams include friends, couples, and entire families. Usually a Porsche is required for our club events, but on occasion (read bad weather) any car will do.

At the start of a rally, you will be given at least two sets of instructions.

The General Instructions are the ground rules for the event, containing definitions, priorities, and other information. In needs to be emphasized that the General Instructions are very important because they may contain particular ground rules or definitions that are needed for using the Route Instructions. The Route Instructions direct you along a course from the start location to the finish location. you will not get lost if you simply (“simply” has various definitions depending on experience.) follow the Route Instructions (in accordance with the General Instructions) in the obvious manner. other types of instructions can interact in various ways with the General Instructions, with the Route Instructions, and with each other. Sometimes there are tricks to get you off-course, but not hopelessly lost. Most rallies may have checkpoints along the course, where you stop your car and interact with rally personnel, who might throw some more additional instructions your way. Note that the “vocabulary” or word definitions used in rallying are fairly consistent. All of the important definitions used in an AMR rally will be provided in our General Instructions for that rally. Full details on Rally Rules including all Definitions and Abbreviations are in Section V of the AMR/RMR Event Rules 2014 which is on our website amrporsche.com.

In a Gimmick Rally, you solve puzzles and try to avoid being tricked.

The only time constraint is a deadline to be at the finish location. In a Timed Rally (also known as TSD or Timed, Speed, Distance), you try to stay on time, arriving at a different checkpoint location neither early nor late.

A Gimmick Rally is full of puzzles and tricks. your score is based on information you record on your score sheet, which shows how well you solved the puzzles and avoided being tricked. No speed or time is involved, other than a deadline to be at the finish location. Teams can be divided into classes based on previous rally experience, with separate awards for each class. There are literally dozens of variations of gimmicks which can be used. They can be all of one type or combined

Various Questions are interspersed among the Route Instructions. At the appropriate points in the Rally, you record your Answers on the score sheet. In our sketch example, the question “What streets meet at the first intersection you encounter?” might appear after the “Turn right at Smith” instruction. Assuming that Smith Road exists somewhere past Smyth Street, waiting for “Smith” would give you a different (and correct) answer to the question than turning right at Smyth would. In practice, street names are rarely similar enough for a Q & A Rally to use misspelled street names in Route Instructions like this. Instead, a misspelled street name might be used in a question, such as “What streets meet at the first intersection past Smith?” If you encounter Smyth Street (but not Smith Street) while trying to answer that question, then you would be unable to answer the question, and would fill in your score sheet accordingly.

Scavenger Hunt

Similar to Questions and Answers but the questions are based on looking for things along the rally route, such as “What is the name on the mailbox at 123 Smith St”?

The event is part of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series. This year’s IMSA WeatherTech Championship Series race will feature the GTlM and GTD classes. Volunteers are needed to help staff the car corral and tent for the two-day event. There are various shifts available both Saturday and Sunday August 27th & 28th. While the race schedule is not confirmed, times are generally available from 7:30am – 6pm (Sat) and 8am – 4:30 pm (Sun).

However these times could shift somewhat. Should you wish to volunteer at the event, we have 10 tickets for access to the race each day. Everything I knew about TSD rallies, until recently, I learned from Jeremy Clarkson. I absolutely love the BBC television show Top Gear. It had a winning blend of car journalism and comedy starring Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May. A 2010 episode featured the trio participating in a classic car regularity rally or Time Speed Distance rally. The show was hilarious but it did not completely explain how TSD rallies should be done. For that, I’ve asked FSR Rally masters Tom and Eleanor Bobbitt to explain the driver and co-driver roles. The Bobbitts began rallying in the mid-70’s and will share how they developed a winning team chemistry required to compete at the national level.

The object of a TSD rally is to drive a specified course at a specific average speed to arrive at a checkpoint on time.

Penalty points are awarded for arriving too early or too late; therefore, the team Navigator’s view with the lowest score wins. The event is quite safe because it utilizes regular roads and normal cars. Travel speeds are within the legal limits. In fact, rallies are one of the few events that PCA will allow 16 and 17 year olds to compete as codrivers.

TSD rallies have different competition levels depending on skill and equipment used. The FSR TSD Rally will be “seat of the pants” meaning participants can relax and focus on staying on course. Not much is required to compete; a clear mind, not too much caffeine, a few pencils to make notes, a clipboard with some paper, and a clock that can be set to the official time of the Rally master before the start. Smart phones work great. Math minded co-drivers are welcome to do the calculations but the odometer check should be sufficient for this event. Rallies can last all day or several days. The FSR TSD Rally is intended to be a fun event taking teams from Stonehouse to yorktown in half a day while learning the basics of rallying. on Top Gear, the trio participated in a 5-day classic car rally on the Spanish island of Majorca. While their budget antique cars provided numerous challenges along the way, the driver and co-driver interactions provided the most laughs.

Jeremy’s speedometer was broken and his co-driver spoke no English. James’ co-driver had absolutely no interest in following the instructions, timing their route, or listening to James.

Tom Bobbitt says a successful driver must maintain a steady speed and always be

aware of the speed required for that leg.

“It is important to emphasize that the route instructions and speeds indicated are precise, not approximate. Many beginners in a TSD rally run into trouble by not appreciating or following the precise directions. Eleanor Bobbitt says the co-driver must be constantly communicating with the driver and keeping the team on course. “It cannot be over emphasized that the team’s priority always has to be staying on course, even to the detriment of going too slow. A missed turn that is not realized until you have driven a mile down the road means a mile drive back to the course. At 30 mph, you’ve just lost 4 minutes. It would have been smarter to slow at an intersection, even stop, to discuss with your teammate and make the correct decision, perhaps costing 30 extra seconds.”

Tom offers more advice. “Another mistake beginner rallyists make is not memorizing and agreeing with their teammate on the meaning of the general instructions and definitions for the rally. The General Instructions (GI) are provided before the rally to allow the team to familiarize themselves with the definitions. The Route Instructions are provided just a few minutes prior to the rally start and will use precise language and words defined in the GI. During the driver’s meeting, the Rally master will answer any questions the teams may have. The FSR GI will be emailed to all registered entrants a week before the rally.”

How did the Top Gear episode end? By the end of the rally, the three teams developed a chemistry that allowed them to have fun. The slow and methodical James May and his glamour model co-driver had fewer penalty points than Jeremy or Richard.

“These things are meant to be fun.

Spending the day with a family member or friend, driving around on nice roads followed by a picnic should be lots of fun.” The Bobbitts and I hope to see you at the FSR TSD Rally on August 26th. Also, sign up for Rally School to get more tips for a successful day.

The engine is based on the one now used in the 580-horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S, but it's been fitted with larger turbochargers along with some other power-boosting changes. The GT2 RS also has rear-axle steering for improved cornering. This is a system that, at low speeds, turns the back wheels slightly in the opposite direction of the front wheels for tighter cornering and, at higher speeds, turns them in the same direction for greater stability.

The car has Porsche's seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission.

To save weight, this car does not have the small back seats found on more common versions of the 911. Many of the car's interior and exterior body parts are made from lightweight carbon-fiber reinforced plastics.

From the President Doug Worrall Summertime, summertime, sum-sum, summertime. Where did it go? We can’t be talking about September already! I hope you’ve been enjoying the beach and the pool. or maybe a cool mountain getaway. Summer is the time of year for ice cream and watermelon, backyard cookouts and baseball games. It’s also the time of year for our New Member Meet & Greet. Hopefully you were able to socialize with some new folks in Chesapeake and discuss some of the varied interests of our club members.

My son got married out in the western part of the state this summer and I was impressed by the bucolic setting. It reminded me that Virginia has some beautiful landscapes with beautiful roads that our cars love to be driven on.

Come enjoy some beautiful roads closer to home on August 5 when we’ll leave our monthly Williamsburg breakfast at Victoria’s for a Fun Run to Eric and Jill Cruz’s place. We’ll check out some of Eric’s cars and get one or two up on the lift for a Tech Session.

Then for the first time in a few years, our Time Speed Distance Rally is happening on August 26 in Williamsburg. Tom and Eleanor Bobbitt will be teaching a TSD class beforehand for those who are new to rallying. We’ll finish up the fun with a BBQ at the home of Rob and Michelle Calloway in yorktown.

The other places that Porsches love to be driven is on the track. If you want to watch some Porsches driven really well on the track, head out to Virginia International Raceway for the Weathertech Michelin GT Challenge August 26 and 27. you can sign up for the Porscheplatz area that will be set up there. you’ll enjoy all the perks that come with the Porscheplatz while watching the races from a great venue.

Then we come to September! Even though it’s called an autumn month, I like to consider it the 4th month of summer. My kids are all grown, so I don’t have school to think about. The water’s still warm and the weather is still nice. you can do anything that can be done in the summer and usually with a much smaller crowd. our Driver’s Education participants will be off to VIR for a 2 day DE on the South Course September 16 & 17. If you like your cars at a much slower pace (standing still), there is the Classics onThe Green car show at the New Kent Winery on the 17th also.

To finish out September, there will be Treffen Asheville on September 20-24. Treffen is the younger, smaller sibling to Porsche Parade. A gathering of Porsche enthusiasts to hang out with and share in celebrating these fine cars. And speaking of beautiful landscapes and great roads. Asheville NC ranks right up there with the best. So join some folks there or at any one of First Settlers other activities. After all-It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.
