From the President Doug Worrall “New year, new you”. This time of year, this saying is directed at us everywhere from health club banners to social media ads for financial institutions. Well, it applies to car clubs too. We have a new slate of officers at First Settlers for 2017. If you weren’t able to meet some of them at the Kingsmill New year party, hopefully you’ll have the opportunity in the near future. our new Vice Presidents are Melinda Cagle(East) and Kevin Clark(West). The new Secretary is Ed Merry. Staying on are John Schwaebler as Treasurer and Vince Canepa as Activities officer. My name is Doug Worrall and I am the new President. Jason Horner will be the “new” Past President. These folks along with a myriad of appointed Chair positions make up your Board of Directors. Those Chair positions will be voted in at the first Board Meeting of 2017 . This all-volunteer army works to make First Settlers the best Region in PCA. And we have fun doing it!
New FSR President Doug Worrall and past president Jason Horner
January and February are months that we tend to keep our Porsches parked in a sort of automotive hibernation. Sometimes with good reason as road conditions can be harsh on metal and machinery. But there are plenty of good days to run your car and without the need for power-sapping air conditioning! Bring your baby out to one of our four monthly breakfast meetings. We meet in Williamsburg and Fredericksburg on the first Saturday of each month. The second Saturday of each month we meet in Richmond and Chesapeake.

Activities will pick up in March and will be in full swing by April. In March there is a Werks Reunion in Amelia Island, SC. There will also be the zone 2 DE at VIR. The mid-year national Porsche gathering, now called Treffen, will be in Austin, TX. In April, we’ll have our first DE of the year happening at Dominion Raceway near Fredericksburg. The Hershey Swap Meet is in PA. And you will want to be part of the First Settlers Annual Charity Event April 21-23 in Greenbrier, WV! So whether you’re into social gatherings, track events, Porsche culture, fun runs, charity events; or like me, all of the above, come on out and join in the fun! And if you run into a Board Member somewhere, join me in thanking them for helping us enjoy our cars a little more because of their efforts. Keep the shiny side up!

My Special PEC Delivery - by Melinda Cagle Every Porsche owner has a story where he or she saw a particular car and fell in love. For many of us, the longing lasts for years. My story began over thirty years ago. I walked by a little Targa every day on my way to class. I vowed that someday this engineering student would own one.
NAME
last summer, I decided 2017 was finally the time to buy my first 911. My daughter is now grown and out of college. I’m celebrating 30 years with NASA. This car would be special so I wanted my delivery to be special, too.

Anyone who has spent time on the Porsche Configurator knows the options list is one of the natural wonders of the marketing world. There are not many free options; however, the free Porsche Experience Center (PEC) Delivery in Atlanta is the best bargain. Unlike European Delivery, this option costs the dealer nothing. Also, unlike other marques, Porsche doesn’t offer the customer any savings for hopping the pond. I secured a 911 Carrera production slot from Richmond dealer Euroclassics Porsche in September and had 2 weeks to lock in the spec of the car and place the order with the help of my salesman John Philipp. Shortly thereafter, Katheryn Aquino at PEC Delivery Melinda Cagle, Bret Jacobson and Sammie Cagle reached out to me. She patiently answered all of my questions and provided information anxiously await the reveal. on my 911 production, the vessel for my 911’s journey to the Port of Jacksonville, and the delivery date. PEC only offers two deliveries per day Tuesday - Friday. I selected the morning slot. one month prior to my delivery, I received a leather embossed binder filled with lots of goodies including my delivery schedule, original window sticker, and lanyards with personalized nametags for Sammie, Bret, and me. At this point, I was feeling really special and started counting down the days to getting the keys to my new car. Shortly after arrival at Porsche Cars North America headquarters on one Porsche Drive in Atlanta, we were greeted by our New Vehicle Delivery Specialist, Fred Huff. Fred served as our tour guide, 911 features expert, and driving instructor. The Delivery Experience consists of a tour of the PEC followed by delivery, track time in a comparable Porsche, and lunch at Restaurant 356. our lanyards unlocked so much more. From the entrance gate guard to the technicians in the Classis Restoration Shop, we were treated like rock stars because we were picking up a new car! The entire delivery program including lunch was supposed to run 9:00-1:30, but we started earlier and ran later. Fred took us through the entire building including the Porsche Heritage Collection of classic cars featuring some on loan from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, and the Porsche Classic workshop where customers can have their older cars restored by certified classic technicians. The tour ended on the lower Melinda is one happy owner! level of the building by a non-descript door marked in small letters “New Vehicle Deliveries”. Fred slid a plate on the door revealing “Delivery in Progress” and we walked into the Delivery Center and immediately saw the recognizable silhouette of a 911 draped in a black cover. The Delivery Center Manager Ray Shaffer introduced himself, took up a position at the back of the car, and then proceeded to pull back the cover giving me my first look at my beautiful Miami Blue 911! After going over the features of the car in the delivery showroom, it was off to the track in a PEC 911 for 90 minutes of driving, car control exercises, and real world demonstrations of the performance features included in modern Porsches.

I was particularly struck by the attention to detail – coffee upon arrival, fresh fruit in the delivery lounge, Porsche keychains on the fobs, personalized announcements of congratulations, a book on the heritage museum, a photographer to document the day’s events, and much more. My 911 wears badges of this exclusive program. They even provided bottled water in the cup holders for the drive home. My favorite moments included signing the board as delivery #181, receiving a thumb drive with pictures from my special day, and sampling launch Control on track. The highly professional staff made us feel special during our entire visit. In talking to Fred and other employees about how they got their jobs the common theme was that the opportunity found them. Everyone conveyed how truly blessed they feel to show up to one Porsche Drive every day. Their passion shines in the way that they treat their guests. I’ll share some final thoughts and some lessons learned. Even though the official delivery program is a half day, plan a morning delivery and make a full day of it. Bret bought a driving package so he was on track during my track session. Sammie split my track session. Bret’s instructor focused more on driving and performance while mine focused on learning the car. If you plan to drive aggressively, selecting a morning delivery insures your delicious lunch isn’t lost on the track. We wanted to do the simulators after lunch but didn’t book early enough. A large corporate group took the afternoon slots for all six simulators just two weeks prior to our visit. While PEC Delivery is a “Rube Goldberg” approach to picking up a car requiring more planning and effort than a simple trip to the local dealer, it was more fun than any of us could have imagined. Delivery #181 at Porsche North America, one Porsche It’s clearly the best bargain on the Porsche Configurator. Drive. Beauty shot in front of Porsche North America.

As has become customary, the new slate of officers was introduced with Doug Worrall taking over as President, Melinda Cagle as Eastern Vice President, Kevin Clark as Western Vice President, Ed Merry as Secretary, John Schwaebler as Treasurer and yours truly continuing as Activities officer.
What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? Surfing and triathlons, though both have taken a back seat since I started doing DE’s. Still swim daily though!
As is now traditional, FSR presented a token of appreciation to outgoing President Jason Horner for his two years of service to the membership of FSR. Jason’s energetic personality will be missed but he isn’t going far – as he now fills the Past President’s chair.

I was a waiter when I was a student at oDU and a coworker went to work for the Porsche dealership when it was down on laskin Rd. He let me test drive a brand new orange 914. No way I was buying it, the $6,000 window sticker might as well have been $600,000, but it was so cool!
As with all FSR events, this one could not be a success without the voluntary contributions of several FSR members. Jerry and Kathy Kent did the table decorations, Phil and Josie Grandfield set up the White Elephant Auction, Melinda Cagle made the “tent cards, George and Pam Michaels arranged for the band and printed the programs, Marco Estrada built the video. What is your favorite personal car-related story? In the early 80’s, a friend and I were going to Snowshoe to go skiing in his VW Scirocco. He got tired and asked me to drive before we started heading up the mountains. I’d never driven a front-wheel drive car before. I was excited about the extra traction we’d have in the snow. Being young and not knowing much about vehicle dynamics at the time, I was headed up the snowy mountain road, coming around a curve when the car did a complete 360! Boxsters, there will be an appreciation of just how wide the Porsches’ bodies are. A visually distinctive Porsche badge can be found nestled in between the tail lights. These lights are unique as well with the use of four-point brake lights and 3D lEDs. With adjustments to the car’s suspension, the 718 Boxsters are 10% more responsive and more agile than their predecessors. Handling either the 718 Boxster or the 718 Boxster S is a dream that should come true for every car aficionado who manages to get their hands on these beauties, which are designed to perform well both on everyday commute and the racetrack. An optional Porsche Active Suspension Management, when added to the package, will lower the riding height of the 718 Boxsters by 10 millimeters. opting to get the PASM Sport Suspension package for the 718 Boxster S will lower it even further – the suspension will be 20millimeters lower than standard. on the other hand, integrating the Sport Chrono Package to either one of the Boxsters will allow drivers to customize the responsiveness of the engine to one of three settings. With each setting, the system automatically picks the ideal performance from the engine to achieve the best possible acceleration for the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus modes. With the upgraded Porsche Communication Management, drivers can now integrate their mobile devices to access important information like navigational information. For entertainment, the 718 Boxsters are equipped with a 110-watt Sound Package Plus for that excellent acoustic experience while driving.

SM S
E C O F R I E N D LY. WITHOUT SACRIFICE.
Porsche goes back to its roots with the new 718 Boxster and Boxter S, all of which are references to the original Boxsters as well as the Porsche 718 sports car. Porsche honors the 20th anniversary of the first Boxster with new and updated versions that boast of more powerful but extremely efficient engines, and handling that builds on the originals. With the 2-liter and 2.5-liter engines under their hoods, the 718 Boxter and Boxster S, respectively, produces amazing outputs of 300 and 350 hp. Both engines are four-cylinder engines, both of which have been newly engineered and designed by the teams at Porsche. The Boxster S distinguishes itself with the use of a variable turbine geometry mechanism in its turbocharger. As they are updated versions of the previous Boxters, the New European Driving Cycle certified that these two new engines have better fuel efficiency – they can save 14% more fuel than their predecessors.

First Settlers Region - 2016 PCA Public Service Award Submitted by Josie Grandfield First Settlers Charity Coordinator First Settlers Region is proud to offer this submission for the Public Service Award. We started our charity program seven years ago and our charity events have become the hands-down club favorites. Everyone looks forward to them… and they RoCK! We focus on local charities and involve a diverse group of members in planning and execution. our outstanding results demonstrate our commitment to public service and support of PCA goals.

Sheriff’s departments for traffic control and lunch at a historic Inn.
Community involvement was evidenced by the large group of volunteers supporting the drive who unloaded the food from our Porsches. They look forward to seeing the Porsche Caravan arrive every year! More importantly, it could not be done without the close working relationship we enjoy with our local dealership.
The other highlight of the weekend was the Silent Auction that netted $8,435! A unique feature of this auction was the use of the First Settlers website to afford non-attending members the opportunity to bid online.
Weekly Cruise-In Spring Charity Event and Disaster Relief
First Settlers shared hosting responsibilities for a local Cruise-In with three other car clubs. Responsibilities included early Saturday morning set-up and evening hosting by as many as 10 members selling tickets and running the event. Porsche was well represented by hosting this local, well attended, charity event.
Ten Major Community Service Programs
Foodbank Volunteering
• “Turkeys-in-the-Trunk” high-visibility food drive sponsored by the local Porsche dealership. • The 7th Annual Air & Auto Classic Charity Car Show attended by multiple local car clubs. • A special disaster relief effort to raise money and collect donations of building supplies from local businesses and deliver them directly to the flood ravaged victims in Richwood, WV • our Annual Spring Charity event which included community involvement with unique “Poker Walk” and Silent Auction fund raisers. • A fun-filled “White Elephant” auction fund raiser at our holiday party. • Volunteering at the local foodbank on a Saturday morning to sort donated food and fill back-packs for the school lunch program. • Monthly breakfast raffles attended by an average of 60 members that netted $3,560, which goes directly to charity. • Club members are the major Porsche presence at the prestigious “Classics-on-the-Green” charity car show sponsored by the Central Virginia British Car Club, where nine First Settlers members made it to the podium. • one of four car-clubs to rotate hosting a weekly charity Cruise-In that attracted a great mix of cars and car-people out to enjoy a Saturday night! • Charity laps at the First Settlers hosted Driver Education events.
“Turkeys in the Trunk” wouldn’t happen without support from Checkered Flag Porsche in Virginia Beach
Held in support of the 20th annual “Mayflower Marathon” – a three-day food drive for the local food bank, the plan combines the competitive spirit of direct member participation, coordination and support from the local Porsche dealership, strong community involvement and recognition for the Porsche Club of America in the local media. The volunteers at the food drive have come to expect the arrival of the Porsche caravan each year! • Six months of complex planning and execution directly involving over 20 members. • overwhelming Region participation with 34 Porsches and 70 members. • Sponsored by local Checkered Flag Porsche dealership. • Direct involvement by Foodbank executive leadership. • Announced on live radio by local radio station. • Direct community involvement in donations. • $9,880 in cash and 4,871 pounds of food to feed the needy people of our community during the holidays. • Included a fun run and catered dinner at the home of a local member. Planning and execution was coordinated through the First Settlers Charity Committee and directly involved over 20 members. obstacles to success included the need to develop a concept that included the direct involvement of as many members as possible, collaboration with our local Porsche dealership, widespread announcements and recognition with the local public, an emphasis on meeting the stated goals of PCA, keeping the event interesting and fun, and, most importantly, raising as much food and cash as possible.
Our members raised $45,525.16 and 4,871 pounds of food for local charities: Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia Boys Home of Virginia Horizons Hampton Roads Summer School Program
Public Service Activity.
Planning factors to overcome these obstacles included: Finding the right combination for an all-day event focused on charity but that also included a fun-run and a complimentary dinner hosted at a member’s home.
Charity is a major focus of our Region, the number of planned events and member participation for which grows each year. This year, we sponsored three charities and provided Josie Grandfield, FSR Charity Coordinator, much needed building with Dick Trowbridge, Executive Director of supplies to flood victims in Horizon Hampton Roads - one of our West Virginia. Sponsorship sponsored charities. came from over 100 individuals and businesses throughout the year. Most notably, our local Porsche dealership, Checkered Flag Porsche of Virginia Beach, contributed significantly to every facet of our charity effort.
Negotiations with Checkered Flag Porsche General Manager to host the kick-off “weigh-in” and donation of Porsche logo luggage to the member bringing the largest donation of food, by weight. Pre and post-event articles in the First Settlers Region newsletter, “Horizontally opposed”, and website used to generate interest among Region members. Advanced coordination with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia for a suitable arrival time for the Porsche caravan and presentation of our donation check.

This annual event has become a favorite with our members and a major factor in our Public Service Program. We travelled to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for a multi-region, three-day weekend focused on charity and service. This year we added a unique event to help with disaster relief to help the residents of Richwood, WV. The town, near some of our favorite driving roads, was devastated by floods and they needed help. our members came together and sponsored a “relief truck” loaded with much needed building supplies.
Members spend a Saturday morning preparing boxes of donations at the Foodbank
First Settlers members spent a Saturday morning with a hands-on event at the local foodbank sorting food items and stuffing back-packs for the school lunch program. This event gave us insight to the depth and breadth of the hunger problem in our community.
The event took months of planning involving a committee of First Settlers members and they had many challenges to overcome.
Air & Auto Classic
Meeting with the hotel events coordinator several times to arrange meeting space, the banquet, parking, catering and marketing.
The 7th Annual Air and Auto Classic Charity Car Show was a smashing success! The event netted $9,300, which was divided equally between the Horizons Hampton Roads and the Mayflower Marathon food drive for the foodbank.
Three separate planning visits by different members to Richwood to survey the damage and get a first-hand view of the devastation and an understanding of their needs. Negotiations with local Virginia Beach merchants who heeded our call for help to assist people in a different state. We earned support from a national appliance retailer to buy items at-cost, a garden supply center that donated much needed grass seed, and with a building supply company that donated sheet rock, sub-flooring, insulation and nails.
This event is a major undertaking and is now considered one of the premier car-culture events of the year. This complex event was coordinated by a dedicated core of 10 Region members who volunteered to run the event but well over 50 local members attended, of which 30 volunteered. The challenges were many but the rewards plentiful!
Members loaded a 20-foot U-Haul truck to the roof with supplies, drove it 300 miles to the mountains of West Virginia with an escort of Porsches, and personally delivered the supplies to the waiting residents of Richwood.
Numerous advanced planning meetings with the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum to coordinate parking, ticketing, vendors, volunteers and host of details. Coordination with the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia ABC, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Department for required licenses, permits and security. Marketing throughout the year to include announcements on local radio stations and distribution of flyers at car shows and cruise-ins throughout the year.
Meeting with local merchants in Staunton VA to include them as “dealers” in the unique “Poker Walk” that involved walking, vice driving, around town engaging the local community in the very fun event. Planning two-day long fun-runs, which included coordination with local

The now famous “White Elephant Auction brought out an interesting collection of items and an enthusiastic group of bidders. In the end, $954 was raised for the FSR charities, a truly wonderful way to kick off the New year. Thanks to everyone for their generosity!
First Settlers Member since? Same What kind of Porsche(s) do you drive? 2007 Carrera S What other Porsches have you owned in the past? First and only What is your first Porsche memory?
Thank you! See you all next year!

Rock wall on one side, cliff on the other. Talk about your life flashing before your eyes! I’d like to say it was my car control skills that brought us through unscathed, but it was dumb luck. My friend drove the rest of the way. Do you have a favorite Porsche? My next one. looking for a manual 997.2 or Carrera GTS
