From the President George Michaels FSR Friends, We celebrated First Settlers’ 55th Anniversary in grand style this month at the Wintergreen Resort. The weather was absolutely fabulous and so were the back roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which led us to local breweries, restaurants and plenty of camaraderie.

Back at the resort, our guest speaker, Derek Daly, entertained us with great racing stories and, through the generosity of our members, sponsors and donors of auction items, we raised $8.428.00 for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Boys Home of Virginia.

Back in February, based on member feedback, we added a monthly breakfast in Williamsburg on the first Saturdays. We maxed out our restaurant space on the first go, even with snow still on the ground, but attendance has backed off since then. This is a great opportunity to meet up with the rest of the region in the middle – only an hour from Richmond and the Southside… and you can make a day of it in historic Williamsburg $MBTT m"n $POUSBDUPS -JDFOTFE $POUSBDUPS " or hit the outlets. our Spring Driver education event at VIR was another sell out. even the De Intro had record numbers. So, if you’re thinking about giving the track a try, put our fall De event on your calendar for 20-22 September.

Coming up June 14 is our annual New Member Meet and Greet social event - eastern Area edition, at Kathy and Jerry Kent’s house in Virginia Beach. This is an opportunity for new members to meet some not-so-new ones in a relaxed, casual setting (like most of our events!). The Central Area version of this event will be in late summer at Steve and Kate Sarfaty’s place, just west of Richmond. Also in June is Parade 2014 in Monterey, CA, and we need someone from First Settlers to pick up the awards we plan to win. Please let me know if you’re making the trip. Check out the calendar on the back page for a comprehensive list of other great stuff to do.

Aside from activities and events, the business end of First Settlers chugs on. your board meets every other month to work through the schedule and chart the course of the region. While we provide the big update at our open Board Meeting in october, in the interest of transparency, I’d like to make you aware of a recent decision that was retroactively implemented back to January: expense Reimbursement. This program serves to reduce the cost of volunteering by allowing board members, chairs, event leads and committee members to submit requests for reimbursement of mileage and hotel room expenses incurred while planning region events. We consulted with zone 2 and regions in the zone when determining criteria for reimbursement, so we’re in-line with the way PCA does business. If you’d like details, please contact me. WARMING UP THE CAR It makes sense to get your car up to operating temperature before you start driving it hard - this will thin out the oil and let the engine expand and free up, which will make it more efficient and place less strain on the moving parts. Keep an eye on the water and oil temperatures to make sure the extra load isn't causing it to overheat.

Prepping for the Track Reprinted from www.drivingfast.net MAINTENANCE Driving a car hard on the track puts a great deal of additional strain on your machine so some simple maintenance is essential:

DRIVING POSITION When getting ready for the track you should adjust your seat to a much more upright position than you may use when driving on the road. you should be able to rest your wrists comfortably on the top of the steering wheel while keeping a slight bend in your arms. This may mean moving closer to the wheel than you normally would which can feel strange at first, but will give you maximum control.

Brake fluid should be relatively new as it tends to absorb water from the atmosphere - this can boil when the brakes heat up leaving compressible steam in the brake pipes which will cause spongy brake feel and reduced efficiency.

Make sure oil, water and other fluid levels are topped up - cornering force can cause the build up of fluids on one side of the reservoir which can lead to fluid starvation.

FUEL Many drivers use a higher octane fuel when competing or attending track days - these fuels give more bang for your buck and can aid performance but tend to be more expensive. Don't brim your car when fueling - leave just the right amount to see you through the day. excess fuel is heavy and can be detrimental to lap times - it can also slosh around if you don't have a baffled tank, causing unnecessary weight transfers which unsettle the car.

TIRE PRESSURES If you only do one thing before a track day, try to get the pressures right.

This is a bit of a dark art, and many drivers are secretive of the pressures they run. At the very least, match the manufacturers guidelines, and as a rule of thumb, increasing by 5-10% should provide a better turn in and be generally more suited to track conditions. experiment here, and take notes - eventually you'll find pressures which will give you a good compromise between grip, predictability at the limit and turn in. Pressure increases with temperature, so bear this in mind if you'll be doing a large number of laps - if you're doing short runs, you can probably get away with slightly higher pressures. Rubber compounds also tend to get softer and provide more grip as they get hotter (up to a point). So ensure your tires are warm before attempting full racing speed.

Reviewing the Porsche Sport Driving School

It was then time for the official welcome and the classroom portion of the course to begin. We were asked to introduce ourselves and give a little background as to our driving experience and last but not least were we a Porsche owner? Just a little background on my wife and I. We are both Department of Criminal Justice certified Driving Instructors who teach Police officers emergency vehicle operations (A fancy way to say we teach Cops how to drive in high speed pursuits) when we are not performing our regular duties. She is the head instructor for the Newport News Police Department training academy and I am a Homicide investigator for the same Department. So, we are no stranger to high speed and precision maneuvering. However we both anticipated gaining even more skills to enhance our abilities. Approximately half of the class was made up of a members of the Xerox Corporation who were there as a team-building excursion. (I obviously work for the wrong company!)

The class covered proper driver’s seating position, vehicle dynamics, weight transfer, how brake systems operate and the importance of looking where you want to go as opposed to looking at where you are.

The instruction was brief but covered very closely what we teach on day one of the week-long driver’s training at the academy.

By Wayne Verdaasdonk I recently took the plunge and pulled the trigger on a long time bucket list item. I have been a member of First Settler’s Region of the PCA since 1999 when I purchased my first Porsche, at the time my dream car a 1987 928s4. I was smitten with the Porsche life-style and could not get enough. When I first became aware of the Porsche Driving experience (as it was known back then) I knew that one day I would attend.

As most of us realize there are some things that our regular life throws at us that tend to put such dreams just out of reach. every year I promised myself that this is the year! Well as the years went by, the dream never seemed to get any closer.

And then it happened! october 2013. Both the 911 model and I turned 50.

There had to be a special way to celebrate this milestone. Porsche North America announced its’ first ever Couples Package for the Porsche Sport Driving School.

The package was described as “A romantic all-inclusive (Wayne & Melissa enjoying the Porsche Sport Driving package at the Porsche School) Sport Driving School. you and your significant other will experience all of the features included in our Precision Course plus the best the Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort has to offer with your choice of either a round of golf or spa treatment for two!” I had my perfect idea of a celebration. I signed up immediately.

The process couldn’t have been easier! In short order my wife and I had a spot in the class. The paperwork was completed; there is some paperwork required, signing of an insurance waiver, detailed course descriptions to read, etc. But all accomplished with ease and good support from the Porsche North America crew.

weekend, Buddy Blair, was poised again with his camera as we drove out of the parking lot. The route took us through some gentle foothills on some very small roads, through some very small towns and past some very large farms. We stopped for a nice photo-op along the banks of the Rockfish River. I’m willing to bet there has never been so many Porsches parked along that stretch of road before! Sights seen along the way included the dog who lifted his head just high enough to pan back and forth as all the cars drove by. And the black snake in the middle of the road that had had enough of loud cars driving over him that he coiled and struck out at the last few in line.

After the classroom portion we selected helmets and headed out for the track! The class had been broken up into smaller groups. We were paired with students of similar background and experience.

Now came the hard part. Waiting for February! The four long months seemed to drag on, but eventually we found ourselves on a plane bound for leeds, Alabama. We were met at the airport by the shuttle driver holding up the Porsche crest. our trip to the Renaissance Ross-Bridge Golf Resort Spa took a short 35 minutes. Upon arrival we were greeted by the sight of the Porsche Crest as it was projected onto the lobby floor from overhead. The room key also featured the Porsche Crest. our pool-side room had a beautiful view of the grounds from our private balcony. As bags were being unpacked there was a knock at the door, and a chilled bottle of Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries were delivered to the room. Just when I was thinking things couldn’t get better, the bellman announced that there was also a delivery from Porsche. We were then handed bags that contained his and hers sweatshirts and hats embroidered with the Driving School logo. We explored the hotel and it amenities before a relaxing dinner in the clubhouse. early bedtime was a necessity as the shuttle to Barber Motorsport Park left at 6:45 from the lobby.

lunch was excellent. A choice of entrees including vegan variations, a full salad and dessert bar. My wife and I chose a table and to our delight the instructors all ended up at our table. What an opportunity to interact with professional race car drivers in a relaxed setting. As much as we enjoyed hearing anecdotes from their races they all wanted to hear stories from our world of law enforcement. That had to be one of the biggest highlights for me, listening to those guys. It was very evident that they all get along well and respect each other’s skills. I was impressed by the lack of ego present in that very talented group.

The shuttle filled up fast as our classmates boarded for the trip to the track. A short 30 minute drive brought us to Barber Motorsport Park.

The class was escorted to the lobby area of the school. Driver’s licenses were checked and we were welcomed in to help ourselves to a buffet of breakfast items, coffee and juice. As the class members ate the staff and instructors wandered the room meeting the students and introducing themselves.

The first part of the morning was broken up into three different exercises. There was a braking course, the skid pad and then the autocross. The instructors worked with individual students who drove Boxster S, Cayman S, and 911 S vehicles. I got to experience Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes for the first time on the Cayman S. (I like PCCB. No, I really like PCCB!) As our groups mastered the skills being taught we rotated through all stations.

After a short break we were taken on a tour of the track. I have watched many races from Barber Motorsport Park. let me say, television does not do justice to the elevation changes that are present along the 2.38 mile circuit. Forty plus feet of elevation changes along the “corkscrew” and the “carousel” to be exact. This would make for a very exciting afternoon! our groups rotated through laps on the track following the leader, our group instructor. As we became more accustomed to the track and our skills increased our speed also increased. As we rotated through our positions I made it to the front of the group and took my place behind the instructor. okay, so far this was rapidly becoming one of the best days of my life. I find myself in a beautiful Speed yellow Cayman S with every available option (to include those PCCB brakes!) chasing James Gue around Barber Motorsort Park! Three weeks ago I was watching him take the checkered flag in the Prototype Challenge class at the 24 Hours at Daytona driving for CoRe Autosport. Now here I am chasing him as he pilots a gorgeous red 991 Turbo S. Does it get any better? oh yeah, bonus! All track laps are recorded with the in-car Racekeeper system. The system allows the driver to insert the Porsche supplied USB stick in the dash of each car recording the lap. This system utilizes two cameras, one pointing through the windshield for a driver’s point of view and one trained on the driver. (That view allowed me to later see just how big my smile could get!) lap times decreased, speeds increased and skills became sharper. our group traded our Cayman S models for the 991 Carrera S. What a difference engine placement makes in how the car responds. More laps down and it was time for lunch.

in town. The conversation and camaraderie were nonstop, the food delicious and, yes, even more local beers to sample. Winners all around!

The best way to summarize the weekend in one word is “perfect”! The hard work that went into planning the event paid off, everything ran (Matt & Aynsley ready for Bingo war!) smoothly, and the weather and the atmosphere could not have been better. our Wintergreen hosts were accommodating, as was the local law enforcement. Hearing Derek Daly tell stories about racing Formula one in the late 70’s was captivating and very unique for the First Settlers Region. But perhaps most importantly, though the generosity of our sponsors and members, we raised a record amount of money from the Spring Charity event!! A very special thanks to everyone who contributed either time or money to make this all happen.

by Sam Gassel In the midst of a project like this, you never feel like you’ll ever see the day you walk into your garage and say to yourself “I can’t think of anything else that needs to be done”. But amazingly – that day does arrive.

FROM THIS. . .

It’s been hard in a couple of articles, to put down on paper how much time and effort has gone into the restoration/build of the ’72 911e. There are so many stages to a project like this. looking back, there are the dumb things - like trying to pressure bleed the brake system with having forgotten to install the rear brake pads, and there are the genius things you can be really proud of – like welding on front flare sections with little or no distortion. But all in all when you reach the finish line, you get a tremendous sense of accomplishment above all else. I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at the car from all angles and relishing the view. I never get tired of it.

Now is the time to carefully look at everything you’ve done. Check fuel and brake lines for leaks, and thoroughly check bolts and nuts for proper tightness – especially suspension parts. I admit I’m easily distracted and a neighbor or friend walking up to say “Hello” could result in not tightening something. Double check that all electrical & ground wire connections are clean and secure. electrical issues on these old cars, can many times be attributed simply to weak or corroded ground connections. In early 911’s and 356’s there are several gang ground points. This is where a group of ground wires all mount on a single stud. Be sure everything is clean and corrosion free. Take some fine sandpaper and clean off the copper ends to all of the wires until they’re shiny. This will insure good ground connections for years to come.

THROUGH THIS . . .

Before starting any engine that has been empty of oil or rebuilt, I like to build oil pressure by turning it over only with the starter. Disconnect the coil to distributor wire, and let the engine turn over until the dash gauge indicates some buildup of pressure. Do this in short bursts so as to not damage or overheat the starter. It does take a while, but be patient - you’ll feel a lot better knowing that all the oil galleys, bearings, cams etc. have a good coat of oil before the engine is started.

Upon finishing it’s important to gather up all of the historical documentation, photos and receipts for the car both from prior ownership and yours. Create a nice binder that shows off your work with sequential photos and build notes. The time spent doing this, will pay off down the road if you ever decide to sell the car or enter it in a car show. Collectors & Judges want to see all of this. Porsche can supply a CoA (Certificate of Authenticity) for your car. you can fax a request form to Porsche Cars North America. There is a fee, but it’s well worth it to know details about how your car left the factory and what options it might have had when built.

along with over 600 vintage and modern racing motorcycles. We were allowed to wander through the exhibits until the shuttles arrived to take us back to the hotel.

After lunch we were once again broken up into smaller groups. We went over more skill exercises, visited the skid pad again and then the autocross competition. every member of the group would drive three laps, then a driver change and the next would drive there three laps and so on. The competition was for the fastest driver’s individual time, the fastest team overall time and the fastest driver change. The results were kept secret and would be revealed later.

The trip back was filled with the sounds of excited conversations and promises to return to a future school. once back at the hotel I realized just how physical the day had been. We had dinner reservations for 8:00 PM, and relaxed until time to go. It was a very nice five course dinner at Brock’s the hotel’s premier restaurant.

Next, back to the track for more laps! The afternoon laps were all in 991 Carrera S vehicles. everything we had learned all came together and the speeds increased. I never felt that I was being held back and I never felt as though I was being pushed beyond my limits. It was a natural progression and I found myself comfortably reaching 120 MPH in the straights before the end of the day. As the sun tracked across the sky I had a new appreciation for professional race car drivers fighting to see in the late afternoon glare.

Saturday morning held the last event of the trip. As part of the couple’s package we could choose a round of golf at the resort or a spa day. We chose the spa package and couple’s massage. The facilities were really something special. We were instructed to arrive 30 minutes prior to our appointment time. once there we were taken to separate changing areas where we could take advantage of the hot tub, the sauna or just relax in the lounge. The massage was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

I was very impressed with the facilities at the track. There is a full staff of folks behind the scenes to handle all kinds of issues. Any time a vehicle had a brake wear warning or a tire wear or pressure warning the staff quickly removed the car from the line and took it immediately to the garage where it was serviced and taken back to its position on the track. If you didn’t actually see this happen you might not even be aware that it had taken place. The transition was just that smooth.

All in all the experience at the Renaissance Ross-Bridge resort was amazing. The staff and instructors as well as the behind the scenes folks at Porsche North America who assisted with booking the class were a true pleasure to deal with.

I am so glad that I finally decided to take the class and I am very thankful to Porsche for offering the couple’s package. That package allowed me to enjoy the event with my wife at an all-inclusive rate. The only thing not included in the price of the package was the airfare.

The last lap of the day was taken from the passenger’s seat. The instructors drove at their level of comfort. It was amazing to see how effortless they hit their marks. I now understood exactly what they had meant by late, hard braking. That lap was over way too quickly and I found myself entering pit lane for the last time.

If you are a true Porsche-fanatic such as I am and have ever considered taking this class don’t put it off! It will be everything you can imagine and then some! And for you married guys, your wife will love the experience just as much. What a great way to get your sweetheart involved with your other passion! We met back at the classroom for a debrief on the day. The instructors gave their final thoughts and announced the results of the competitions.

To my surprise my wife and I won the driver change competition! We changed drivers in 16 seconds! Not too bad. We won digital tire pressure gauges courtesy of Michelin Tires. everyone received a Certificate of Graduation along with photos taken at the track. My wife and I asked for James Gue to take a photo with us and he gladly did.

He even signed that photo for us. After filling out evaluation sheets the class was taken for a tour of the Barber Motorsport Museum.

on a personal note, my wife had driven my 911 and was less than enthusiastic. (She is an American Muscle car fan.) During a break on the track I was asked “How much is a Cayman? I really like that car!”

than De's. Good for a chuckle, I know, but hear me out. For the most part, those in Chump Racing are far more experienced at handling their own cars, driving “faux pas” and other driver idiosyncrasies. Defensive and offensive driving at it's best in Chump and be ready to do just that. you learn very quickly to check your mirror to know who's coming up, who's ReAlly faster than you and when it's time to let someone pass. The passing car is responsible for the safe pass, not the one being passed. There are no “point-by's” in Chump Racing, no such thing as “no passing in certain turns” and no such thing as “courtesy” unless it has to do with safety.

While De's are an absolute necessity for new driver's and a great jumping off point, they provide the tools for just this type of experience. That being said, there will be no more De's for this girl - “Bring on Chump!!”

by Gina Schwaebler It's 7:30 AM in the paddock at VIR, there's a chill in the air; misty and foggy. I wasn't quite sure how things were going to happen but I knew one thing for sure - that this was going to be the experience of a lifetime. After doing De's for the better part of three or four years, I knew this was going to be something I never anticipated; surrounded by men in a male-dominated sport. I knew that if I was going to prove myself as a female I would have to not do all the things the men might expect me to do. Can I really do this? Would I be able to handle the car, or be so scared that I'd quit or, worse, be a hazard on the track?

Would I remember all the rules? The flags?

In the Nation, we plan for the later years.

The evening ended with awards of the “Shine & Show” presented by Derek Daly. George Michaels and Bob Weber took first and second in the front engined category with their immaculate 928’s; Bob Woodward and Bret Jacobson took first and second in the mid-engined category in their Boxster and Cayman respectively; and Dave Wallace’s ’74 911 Coupe and Matt Nelson’s ’80 Targa took the honors in the rear-engined class.

8:00 AM the track went hot. our team is late because of car trouble making me wonder if we could still be a viable team even now?

First out: David Israel. I’m not sure I could ever do that well; he's consistent, safe and fast, but as he rolled into pit road after the 1st two-hour stint driver of our team, I shoved the thoughts of nervousness and inadequacy down deep, climbed in, strapped down and took off. A reminder in my ear from the pit crew (John, my husband, that is) that pit road speed limit is 15mph - “Slow down, Gina. you're not on the track yet”, I said to myself. At the end of pit road, the timer was removed from the top of the car and I got the goahead. “Remember, track left”' I said to myself, “Then do what you do. Make it fun!”

Fun very quickly turned into an ecstatic rush of adrenaline that made me more focused, alert and completely unnerved. Dry track to wet track to dry again. I learned that car quickly; how it handles, what it will take and what I will give it. Cars within inches of yours; so close you could push them away from you with your hand, turn after turn. Going off track in the carousel; what can I say but all of those awesome De instructors in my head saying "Go with it, hang in there, go with it, don't over correct" still resonated. Back on track immediately with my composure intact and a clear head.

By the time the cocktails started back at the main lodge, Josie, Diane and Aynsley had been hard at work setting up the Silent Auction while Kathy and Jerry had decorated the tables. over 60 items were on display as everyone entered the dinning room. We had several cars parked outside on the patio just outside the dining room making for a very special atmosphere.

The Silent Auction bidding got very competitive as some of the more interested bidders didn’t dare stray too far from the tables for very long.

When the winners were announced at the end of the evening, the tally for charity was over $8300! Another record for the First Settlers charity program! our special guests included Cheryl Taylor and her husband Claude representing zone 2 and Sherry Westfall, President of the Shenandoah Region, and husband Jim. The highlight of the evening was Derek Daly’s keynote address after

What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? I have always enjoyed tinkering with cars and home improvement projects, both of which seem to age along with me. As a family we enjoy boating, fishing, scuba diving, antiques, and visiting natural scenic and historic sites.

What is your favorite personal car-related story? The first night our Cayenne spent in our garage, our then much younger son was observed admiringly petting its fender. (sorry Bud but I had to share this one!)

Do you have a favorite Porsche? Mine is my 911, Marianne’s is her Cayenne Describe your perfect Porsche day. Sunny (no pollen) and a destination with good food, friends and a nice curvy road to travel to get there.

everyone eventually made their way back up the mountain to the resort, though some folks toured the local wineries or shops in nearby Nellysford first. The prep for the “Shine & Show” began in ernest for some and a restful afternoon was in store for others. The sight of the cars staged for judging adjacent to the ski slopes in the bright sunlight was perfect. Derek Daly arrived in time to be the judge and spent some time talking about cars and racing.

We parked all of the cars out front with the parking lot all to ourselves (except for the one Toyota Tercel owned by one of the employees. But she blended right in....) It was a great photo-op and a great lunch. Devil’s Backbone is an award-winning brewery that is worth a visit if you’re anywhere near the area. I personally recommend the Vienna lager!

55th Anniversary and Spring Charity Event

By Phil Grandfield I’ve made this comment before but it bears repeating. If you missed this event, you missed a great one! But we’re sorry to have missed you.

The 55th Anniversary and Spring Charity event, held from May 2-4, 2014 at the Wintergreen Resort, Virginia started with a “Beer, Brats & Bingo” party on Friday night. Saturday was a full day starting with a fun run through the Shenandoah Mountains in the morning, lunch at the Devil’s Backbone Brewery, a top-only “Shine & Show” in the afternoon, and a dinner and Silent Auction in the evening. The weekend finished with another fun run through the Virginia countryside, ending in Scottsville for another lunch and brewery stop. Though the schedule was full, there was also plenty of time to relax and enjoy the perfect weather at the resort.

Planning for this event took months of preparation by a lot of people. Josie Grandfield was the Committee Chair but she could not have pulled this off without the help of her committee. The Costons and Kents hosted checkin from their condo with Diane levendakes and Priscilla Horner manning

With the mountain scenery outside and German music inside we could have been in Bavaria! The main event of the night was “Porsche Bingo” that brought out the competitive spirit in everyone. The seemingly complicated set-up that including providing information about your own car (do you know the official name of your wheels??) became lots of fun once the games started. Jerry Kent was the “caller” decked out in his leiderhosen and Bavarian cap. Not a word was spoken during the games as everyone listened intently to

The route down into the valley along the Tye River and past the Crabtree Falls was beautiful with plenty of curves and no traffic.

By the time the cocktails started back at the main lodge, Josie, Diane and Aynsley had been hard at work setting up the Silent Auction while Kathy and Jerry had decorated the tables. over 60 items were on display as everyone entered the dinning room. We had several cars parked outside on the patio just outside the dining room making for a very special atmosphere.

The Silent Auction bidding got very competitive as some of the more interested bidders didn’t dare stray too far from the tables for very long.

When the winners were announced at the end of the evening, the tally for charity was over $8300! Another record for the First Settlers charity program! our special guests included Cheryl Taylor and her husband Claude representing zone 2 and Sherry Westfall, President of the Shenandoah Region, and husband Jim. The highlight of the evening was Derek Daly’s keynote address after

What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? I have always enjoyed tinkering with cars and home improvement projects, both of which seem to age along with me. As a family we enjoy boating, fishing, scuba diving, antiques, and visiting natural scenic and historic sites.

What is your favorite personal car-related story? The first night our Cayenne spent in our garage, our then much younger son was observed admiringly petting its fender. (sorry Bud but I had to share this one!)

everyone eventually made their way back up the mountain to the resort, though some folks toured the local wineries or shops in nearby Nellysford first. The prep for the “Shine & Show” began in ernest for some and a restful afternoon was in store for others. The sight of the cars staged for judging adjacent to the ski slopes in the bright sunlight was perfect. Derek Daly arrived in time to be the judge and spent some time talking about cars and racing.

We parked all of the cars out front with the parking lot all to ourselves (except for the one Toyota Tercel owned by one of the employees. But she blended right in....) It was a great photo-op and a great lunch. Devil’s Backbone is an award-winning brewery that is worth a visit if you’re anywhere near the area. I personally recommend the Vienna lager!

by Gina Schwaebler It's 7:30 AM in the paddock at VIR, there's a chill in the air; misty and foggy. I wasn't quite sure how things were going to happen but I knew one thing for sure - that this was going to be the experience of a lifetime. After doing De's for the better part of three or four years, I knew this was going to be something I never anticipated; surrounded by men in a male-dominated sport. I knew that if I was going to prove myself as a female I would have to not do all the things the men might expect me to do. Can I really do this? Would I be able to handle the car, or be so scared that I'd quit or, worse, be a hazard on the track?

Would I remember all the rules? The flags?

In the Nation, we plan for the later years.

The evening ended with awards of the “Shine & Show” presented by Derek Daly. George Michaels and Bob Weber took first and second in the front engined category with their immaculate 928’s; Bob Woodward and Bret Jacobson took first and second in the mid-engined category in their Boxster and Cayman respectively; and Dave Wallace’s ’74 911 Coupe and Matt Nelson’s ’80 Targa took the honors in the rear-engined class.

8:00 AM the track went hot. our team is late because of car trouble making me wonder if we could still be a viable team even now?

First out: David Israel. I’m not sure I could ever do that well; he's consistent, safe and fast, but as he rolled into pit road after the 1st two-hour stint driver of our team, I shoved the thoughts of nervousness and inadequacy down deep, climbed in, strapped down and took off. A reminder in my ear from the pit crew (John, my husband, that is) that pit road speed limit is 15mph - “Slow down, Gina. you're not on the track yet”, I said to myself. At the end of pit road, the timer was removed from the top of the car and I got the goahead. “Remember, track left”' I said to myself, “Then do what you do. Make it fun!”

He overcame some huge obstacles to reach his goal, not the least of which being a horrific crash in an Indy car. He talked about how he persevered and made it back into a race car to continue his career. His theme was about what it takes to become a championship driver and how those same themes relate to both life and business. He graciously signed copies of his book, “Race to Win” after dinner.

Fun very quickly turned into an ecstatic rush of adrenaline that made me more focused, alert and completely unnerved. Dry track to wet track to dry again. I learned that car quickly; how it handles, what it will take and what I will give it. Cars within inches of yours; so close you could push them away from you with your hand, turn after turn. Going off track in the carousel; what can I say but all of those awesome De instructors in my head saying "Go with it, hang in there, go with it, don't over correct" still resonated. Back on track immediately with my composure intact and a clear head.

by Sam Gassel In the midst of a project like this, you never feel like you’ll ever see the day you walk into your garage and say to yourself “I can’t think of anything else that needs to be done”. But amazingly – that day does arrive.

FROM THIS. . .

It’s been hard in a couple of articles, to put down on paper how much time and effort has gone into the restoration/build of the ’72 911e. There are so many stages to a project like this. looking back, there are the dumb things - like trying to pressure bleed the brake system with having forgotten to install the rear brake pads, and there are the genius things you can be really proud of – like welding on front flare sections with little or no distortion. But all in all when you reach the finish line, you get a tremendous sense of accomplishment above all else. I’ve been spending a lot of time looking at the car from all angles and relishing the view. I never get tired of it.

Now is the time to carefully look at everything you’ve done. Check fuel and brake lines for leaks, and thoroughly check bolts and nuts for proper tightness – especially suspension parts. I admit I’m easily distracted and a neighbor or friend walking up to say “Hello” could result in not tightening something. Double check that all electrical & ground wire connections are clean and secure. electrical issues on these old cars, can many times be attributed simply to weak or corroded ground connections. In early 911’s and 356’s there are several gang ground points. This is where a group of ground wires all mount on a single stud. Be sure everything is clean and corrosion free. Take some fine sandpaper and clean off the copper ends to all of the wires until they’re shiny. This will insure good ground connections for years to come.

THROUGH THIS . . .

Before starting any engine that has been empty of oil or rebuilt, I like to build oil pressure by turning it over only with the starter. Disconnect the coil to distributor wire, and let the engine turn over until the dash gauge indicates some buildup of pressure. Do this in short bursts so as to not damage or overheat the starter. It does take a while, but be patient - you’ll feel a lot better knowing that all the oil galleys, bearings, cams etc. have a good coat of oil before the engine is started.

Upon finishing it’s important to gather up all of the historical documentation, photos and receipts for the car both from prior ownership and yours. Create a nice binder that shows off your work with sequential photos and build notes. The time spent doing this, will pay off down the road if you ever decide to sell the car or enter it in a car show. Collectors & Judges want to see all of this. Porsche can supply a CoA (Certificate of Authenticity) for your car. you can fax a request form to Porsche Cars North America. There is a fee, but it’s well worth it to know details about how your car left the factory and what options it might have had when built.

along with over 600 vintage and modern racing motorcycles. We were allowed to wander through the exhibits until the shuttles arrived to take us back to the hotel.

After lunch we were once again broken up into smaller groups. We went over more skill exercises, visited the skid pad again and then the autocross competition. every member of the group would drive three laps, then a driver change and the next would drive there three laps and so on. The competition was for the fastest driver’s individual time, the fastest team overall time and the fastest driver change. The results were kept secret and would be revealed later.

The trip back was filled with the sounds of excited conversations and promises to return to a future school. once back at the hotel I realized just how physical the day had been. We had dinner reservations for 8:00 PM, and relaxed until time to go. It was a very nice five course dinner at Brock’s the hotel’s premier restaurant.

Next, back to the track for more laps! The afternoon laps were all in 991 Carrera S vehicles. everything we had learned all came together and the speeds increased. I never felt that I was being held back and I never felt as though I was being pushed beyond my limits. It was a natural progression and I found myself comfortably reaching 120 MPH in the straights before the end of the day. As the sun tracked across the sky I had a new appreciation for professional race car drivers fighting to see in the late afternoon glare.

Saturday morning held the last event of the trip. As part of the couple’s package we could choose a round of golf at the resort or a spa day. We chose the spa package and couple’s massage. The facilities were really something special. We were instructed to arrive 30 minutes prior to our appointment time. once there we were taken to separate changing areas where we could take advantage of the hot tub, the sauna or just relax in the lounge. The massage was great. The staff was very friendly and accommodating.

I was very impressed with the facilities at the track. There is a full staff of folks behind the scenes to handle all kinds of issues. Any time a vehicle had a brake wear warning or a tire wear or pressure warning the staff quickly removed the car from the line and took it immediately to the garage where it was serviced and taken back to its position on the track. If you didn’t actually see this happen you might not even be aware that it had taken place. The transition was just that smooth.

All in all the experience at the Renaissance Ross-Bridge resort was amazing. The staff and instructors as well as the behind the scenes folks at Porsche North America who assisted with booking the class were a true pleasure to deal with.

I am so glad that I finally decided to take the class and I am very thankful to Porsche for offering the couple’s package. That package allowed me to enjoy the event with my wife at an all-inclusive rate. The only thing not included in the price of the package was the airfare.

The last lap of the day was taken from the passenger’s seat. The instructors drove at their level of comfort. It was amazing to see how effortless they hit their marks. I now understood exactly what they had meant by late, hard braking. That lap was over way too quickly and I found myself entering pit lane for the last time.

If you are a true Porsche-fanatic such as I am and have ever considered taking this class don’t put it off! It will be everything you can imagine and then some! And for you married guys, your wife will love the experience just as much. What a great way to get your sweetheart involved with your other passion! We met back at the classroom for a debrief on the day. The instructors gave their final thoughts and announced the results of the competitions.

To my surprise my wife and I won the driver change competition! We changed drivers in 16 seconds! Not too bad. We won digital tire pressure gauges courtesy of Michelin Tires. everyone received a Certificate of Graduation along with photos taken at the track. My wife and I asked for James Gue to take a photo with us and he gladly did.

He even signed that photo for us. After filling out evaluation sheets the class was taken for a tour of the Barber Motorsport Museum.

on a personal note, my wife had driven my 911 and was less than enthusiastic. (She is an American Muscle car fan.) During a break on the track I was asked “How much is a Cayman? I really like that car!”

than De's. Good for a chuckle, I know, but hear me out. For the most part, those in Chump Racing are far more experienced at handling their own cars, driving “faux pas” and other driver idiosyncrasies. Defensive and offensive driving at it's best in Chump and be ready to do just that. you learn very quickly to check your mirror to know who's coming up, who's ReAlly faster than you and when it's time to let someone pass. The passing car is responsible for the safe pass, not the one being passed. There are no “point-by's” in Chump Racing, no such thing as “no passing in certain turns” and no such thing as “courtesy” unless it has to do with safety.

While De's are an absolute necessity for new driver's and a great jumping off point, they provide the tools for just this type of experience. That being said, there will be no more De's for this girl - “Bring on Chump!!”

Reviewing the Porsche Sport Driving School

It was then time for the official welcome and the classroom portion of the course to begin. We were asked to introduce ourselves and give a little background as to our driving experience and last but not least were we a Porsche owner? Just a little background on my wife and I. We are both Department of Criminal Justice certified Driving Instructors who teach Police officers emergency vehicle operations (A fancy way to say we teach Cops how to drive in high speed pursuits) when we are not performing our regular duties. She is the head instructor for the Newport News Police Department training academy and I am a Homicide investigator for the same Department. So, we are no stranger to high speed and precision maneuvering. However we both anticipated gaining even more skills to enhance our abilities. Approximately half of the class was made up of a members of the Xerox Corporation who were there as a team-building excursion. (I obviously work for the wrong company!)

The class covered proper driver’s seating position, vehicle dynamics, weight transfer, how brake systems operate and the importance of looking where you want to go as opposed to looking at where you are.

The instruction was brief but covered very closely what we teach on day one of the week-long driver’s training at the academy.

By Wayne Verdaasdonk I recently took the plunge and pulled the trigger on a long time bucket list item. I have been a member of First Settler’s Region of the PCA since 1999 when I purchased my first Porsche, at the time my dream car a 1987 928s4. I was smitten with the Porsche life-style and could not get enough. When I first became aware of the Porsche Driving experience (as it was known back then) I knew that one day I would attend.

As most of us realize there are some things that our regular life throws at us that tend to put such dreams just out of reach. every year I promised myself that this is the year! Well as the years went by, the dream never seemed to get any closer.

And then it happened! october 2013. Both the 911 model and I turned 50.

There had to be a special way to celebrate this milestone. Porsche North America announced its’ first ever Couples Package for the Porsche Sport Driving School.

The package was described as “A romantic all-inclusive (Wayne & Melissa enjoying the Porsche Sport Driving package at the Porsche School) Sport Driving School. you and your significant other will experience all of the features included in our Precision Course plus the best the Renaissance Ross Bridge Resort has to offer with your choice of either a round of golf or spa treatment for two!” I had my perfect idea of a celebration. I signed up immediately.

The process couldn’t have been easier! In short order my wife and I had a spot in the class. The paperwork was completed; there is some paperwork required, signing of an insurance waiver, detailed course descriptions to read, etc. But all accomplished with ease and good support from the Porsche North America crew.

weekend, Buddy Blair, was poised again with his camera as we drove out of the parking lot. The route took us through some gentle foothills on some very small roads, through some very small towns and past some very large farms. We stopped for a nice photo-op along the banks of the Rockfish River. I’m willing to bet there has never been so many Porsches parked along that stretch of road before! Sights seen along the way included the dog who lifted his head just high enough to pan back and forth as all the cars drove by. And the black snake in the middle of the road that had had enough of loud cars driving over him that he coiled and struck out at the last few in line.

After the classroom portion we selected helmets and headed out for the track! The class had been broken up into smaller groups. We were paired with students of similar background and experience.

Now came the hard part. Waiting for February! The four long months seemed to drag on, but eventually we found ourselves on a plane bound for leeds, Alabama. We were met at the airport by the shuttle driver holding up the Porsche crest. our trip to the Renaissance Ross-Bridge Golf Resort Spa took a short 35 minutes. Upon arrival we were greeted by the sight of the Porsche Crest as it was projected onto the lobby floor from overhead. The room key also featured the Porsche Crest. our pool-side room had a beautiful view of the grounds from our private balcony. As bags were being unpacked there was a knock at the door, and a chilled bottle of Champagne and chocolate covered strawberries were delivered to the room. Just when I was thinking things couldn’t get better, the bellman announced that there was also a delivery from Porsche. We were then handed bags that contained his and hers sweatshirts and hats embroidered with the Driving School logo. We explored the hotel and it amenities before a relaxing dinner in the clubhouse. early bedtime was a necessity as the shuttle to Barber Motorsport Park left at 6:45 from the lobby.

lunch was excellent. A choice of entrees including vegan variations, a full salad and dessert bar. My wife and I chose a table and to our delight the instructors all ended up at our table. What an opportunity to interact with professional race car drivers in a relaxed setting. As much as we enjoyed hearing anecdotes from their races they all wanted to hear stories from our world of law enforcement. That had to be one of the biggest highlights for me, listening to those guys. It was very evident that they all get along well and respect each other’s skills. I was impressed by the lack of ego present in that very talented group.

The shuttle filled up fast as our classmates boarded for the trip to the track. A short 30 minute drive brought us to Barber Motorsport Park.

The class was escorted to the lobby area of the school. Driver’s licenses were checked and we were welcomed in to help ourselves to a buffet of breakfast items, coffee and juice. As the class members ate the staff and instructors wandered the room meeting the students and introducing themselves.

If was fun to be part of it all.

The first part of the morning was broken up into three different exercises. There was a braking course, the skid pad and then the autocross. The instructors worked with individual students who drove Boxster S, Cayman S, and 911 S vehicles. I got to experience Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes for the first time on the Cayman S. (I like PCCB. No, I really like PCCB!) As our groups mastered the skills being taught we rotated through all stations.

After a short break we were taken on a tour of the track. I have watched many races from Barber Motorsport Park. let me say, television does not do justice to the elevation changes that are present along the 2.38 mile circuit. Forty plus feet of elevation changes along the “corkscrew” and the “carousel” to be exact. This would make for a very exciting afternoon! our groups rotated through laps on the track following the leader, our group instructor. As we became more accustomed to the track and our skills increased our speed also increased. As we rotated through our positions I made it to the front of the group and took my place behind the instructor. okay, so far this was rapidly becoming one of the best days of my life. I find myself in a beautiful Speed yellow Cayman S with every available option (to include those PCCB brakes!) chasing James Gue around Barber Motorsort Park! Three weeks ago I was watching him take the checkered flag in the Prototype Challenge class at the 24 Hours at Daytona driving for CoRe Autosport. Now here I am chasing him as he pilots a gorgeous red 991 Turbo S. Does it get any better? oh yeah, bonus! All track laps are recorded with the in-car Racekeeper system. The system allows the driver to insert the Porsche supplied USB stick in the dash of each car recording the lap. This system utilizes two cameras, one pointing through the windshield for a driver’s point of view and one trained on the driver. (That view allowed me to later see just how big my smile could get!) lap times decreased, speeds increased and skills became sharper. our group traded our Cayman S models for the 991 Carrera S. What a difference engine placement makes in how the car responds. More laps down and it was time for lunch.

in town. The conversation and camaraderie were nonstop, the food delicious and, yes, even more local beers to sample. Winners all around!

The best way to summarize the weekend in one word is “perfect”! The hard work that went into planning the event paid off, everything ran (Matt & Aynsley ready for Bingo war!) smoothly, and the weather and the atmosphere could not have been better. our Wintergreen hosts were accommodating, as was the local law enforcement. Hearing Derek Daly tell stories about racing Formula one in the late 70’s was captivating and very unique for the First Settlers Region. But perhaps most importantly, though the generosity of our sponsors and members, we raised a record amount of money from the Spring Charity event!! A very special thanks to everyone who contributed either time or money to make this all happen.

WARMING UP THE CAR It makes sense to get your car up to operating temperature before you start driving it hard - this will thin out the oil and let the engine expand and free up, which will make it more efficient and place less strain on the moving parts. Keep an eye on the water and oil temperatures to make sure the extra load isn't causing it to overheat.

Prepping for the Track Reprinted from www.drivingfast.net MAINTENANCE Driving a car hard on the track puts a great deal of additional strain on your machine so some simple maintenance is essential:

DRIVING POSITION When getting ready for the track you should adjust your seat to a much more upright position than you may use when driving on the road. you should be able to rest your wrists comfortably on the top of the steering wheel while keeping a slight bend in your arms. This may mean moving closer to the wheel than you normally would which can feel strange at first, but will give you maximum control.

Brake fluid should be relatively new as it tends to absorb water from the atmosphere - this can boil when the brakes heat up leaving compressible steam in the brake pipes which will cause spongy brake feel and reduced efficiency.

Make sure oil, water and other fluid levels are topped up - cornering force can cause the build up of fluids on one side of the reservoir which can lead to fluid starvation.

FUEL Many drivers use a higher octane fuel when competing or attending track days - these fuels give more bang for your buck and can aid performance but tend to be more expensive. Don't brim your car when fueling - leave just the right amount to see you through the day. excess fuel is heavy and can be detrimental to lap times - it can also slosh around if you don't have a baffled tank, causing unnecessary weight transfers which unsettle the car.

TIRE PRESSURES If you only do one thing before a track day, try to get the pressures right.

This is a bit of a dark art, and many drivers are secretive of the pressures they run. At the very least, match the manufacturers guidelines, and as a rule of thumb, increasing by 5-10% should provide a better turn in and be generally more suited to track conditions. experiment here, and take notes - eventually you'll find pressures which will give you a good compromise between grip, predictability at the limit and turn in. Pressure increases with temperature, so bear this in mind if you'll be doing a large number of laps - if you're doing short runs, you can probably get away with slightly higher pressures. Rubber compounds also tend to get softer and provide more grip as they get hotter (up to a point). So ensure your tires are warm before attempting full racing speed.

From the President George Michaels FSR Friends, We celebrated First Settlers’ 55th Anniversary in grand style this month at the Wintergreen Resort. The weather was absolutely fabulous and so were the back roads of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which led us to local breweries, restaurants and plenty of camaraderie.

Back at the resort, our guest speaker, Derek Daly, entertained us with great racing stories and, through the generosity of our members, sponsors and donors of auction items, we raised $8.428.00 for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Boys Home of Virginia.

Back in February, based on member feedback, we added a monthly breakfast in Williamsburg on the first Saturdays. We maxed out our restaurant space on the first go, even with snow still on the ground, but attendance has backed off since then. This is a great opportunity to meet up with the rest of the region in the middle – only an hour from Richmond and the Southside… and you can make a day of it in historic Williamsburg $MBTT m"n $POUSBDUPS -JDFOTFE $POUSBDUPS " or hit the outlets. our Spring Driver education event at VIR was another sell out. even the De Intro had record numbers. So, if you’re thinking about giving the track a try, put our fall De event on your calendar for 20-22 September.

Coming up June 14 is our annual New Member Meet and Greet social event - eastern Area edition, at Kathy and Jerry Kent’s house in Virginia Beach. This is an opportunity for new members to meet some not-so-new ones in a relaxed, casual setting (like most of our events!). The Central Area version of this event will be in late summer at Steve and Kate Sarfaty’s place, just west of Richmond. Also in June is Parade 2014 in Monterey, CA, and we need someone from First Settlers to pick up the awards we plan to win. Please let me know if you’re making the trip. Check out the calendar on the back page for a comprehensive list of other great stuff to do.

Aside from activities and events, the business end of First Settlers chugs on. your board meets every other month to work through the schedule and chart the course of the region. While we provide the big update at our open Board Meeting in october, in the interest of transparency, I’d like to make you aware of a recent decision that was retroactively implemented back to January: expense Reimbursement. This program serves to reduce the cost of volunteering by allowing board members, chairs, event leads and committee members to submit requests for reimbursement of mileage and hotel room expenses incurred while planning region events. We consulted with zone 2 and regions in the zone when determining criteria for reimbursement, so we’re in-line with the way PCA does business. If you’d like details, please contact me.
