From the President George Michaels FSR Friends, It’s Halloween week and 80 degrees outside… hopefully, a sign of a mild winter that will facilitate prolonged Porsche enjoyment. Despite a little drizzle, however, about 70 members were in attendance for our annual lunch and Open Board Meeting in Williamsburg on 11 October. Besides an enjoyable lunch on the Club with FSR friends, the most significant occurrence was that the new By-Laws were approved. The minutes of that meeting are in this issue and the new By-Laws are posted in the References section of the FSR website for your review. The following Saturday, six months of planning came to fruition at our 5th annual Air & Auto Classic charity car show. A record 170 cars showed up for the beautiful spring-like day and, through their generosity and that of our sponsors, we netted about $8500 for the SPCA and the Foodbank. Many thanks to our volunteers who helped with show set up, directed, registered, and parked participants and sold beer and wine. A big thanks to the Air & Auto committee for their hard work in making another successful event happen. Join us for our final charity event of the year, Turkeysin-the-Trunk, on 22 November. Go to MotorsportReg.com and sign up now!

Annual elections are upon us and nominations will be open until 15 November. If you or a fellow member you know are interested in serving in an elected position, please nominate them or yourself. If you think a committee position is more your speed, please make any board member aware of your interest. We have several elected positions that will need filling along with some appointed positions, like Newsletter Editor, that will become vacant if no one steps forward. The majority of the current board has been serving for the past 5 years or so, and some of them are looking for a break. That's where you come in - FSR can't operate without volunteers. If you have some spare time to donate to your club, I encourage you to consider stepping up to the plate and helping out. $MBTT m"n $POUSBDUPS -JDFOTFE $POUSBDUPS " As my second term as FSR President comes to a close, I’d like to thank you all for allowing me to serve in this capacity, and to the board for their
leadership and personal efforts that went into making First Settlers such a great group to be part of and led to the tremendous success and national recognition we have enjoyed over the past 5 years. It has been a truly rewarding experience. See you at the next event! Happy Motoring,
George From the Editor: I didn't realize the cover shot for the SEP/OCT issue of the Horizontally Opposed featured two PCA members and their "rides". This email came from Captain Dan Grieco, the Commanding Officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71), and long time PCA member!! Reprinted with permission. . . “Phil, Just received my September HO and admittedly the cover put a smile on my face. You see, I've been a member of PCA for a long time but my Navy job has kept me busy and unfortunately has not allowed me to participate in events for quite some time. None the less, I read and keep up with the goings on knowing that some day my time in the Navy will come to an end and my Porsches will once again get back on the track and Autocross course. In a small way, the photo made me smile and while I was working in the picture, I'm glad I was able to contribute in a small way.

Fun Run to the Weeping Radish By Phil Grandfield Thanks to Ed Merry and Bret Jacobson for coordinating on another successful road trip adventure. On Saturday, October 4th, a caravan about 25 First Settlers Porsches left the parking lot at the Virginia Diner and headed south toward the Outer Banks. The destination was the Weeping Radish in Grandy, North Carolina. The weather was great but the food and micro-brews were even better. This place could become a regular “target” for us! The Weeping Radish is the Oldest Microbrewery in North Carolina. Twenty-nine years ago it was illegal for breweries to sell their own beer directly to consumers; they had to go through a distributor. This made it impossible for microbreweries or small brewpubs to exist. In 1985 Uli Bennewitz went to his local senator and together they passed a bill allowing microbreweries to sell their own beer on site. A year later on the July 4th, 1986 the Weeping Radish Brewery opened for business.

Raised in a small village in Bavaria, Uli was determined to bring the high quality beer he was used to across the ocean to North Carolina. A Master Brewer came over from Germany and brewed the first batches of Corolla Gold, Fest, and Black Radish. Strictly adhering to (Happy customers!) the Reinheitsgebot Purity Law of 1516, all Weeping Radish beers are brewed using hops, malt, yeast and water – no additives, chemicals or preservatives. Their beer list has expanded over the years and currently on draft in the pub we have the OBX Kölsch, IPA 25, and Radler as well as our original Corolla Gold, Fest and Black Radish. And for those of you with a sweet tooth we make a fantastic Root Beer!

What is your first Porsche memory? My ex-brother in-law had an 85 TI= Transfer from another region Carrera Targa. We spent many a day and nights in that car. It was the fastest and coolest car I had ever been in. I was hooked at the time but could not afford one. What is your favorite personal car-related story? Well, there are quite a few. Most of which I don’t’ want to share in this forum. I do have one I would like to share. I bought a 2002 Red Corvette in July of 2009. I was never satisfied with that car and found myself looking at Porsches. I found my 2006 Cayman S in November of 2009 on (Risky Business) t h e Checkered Flag website. In December, Ruthi and I were in Va Beach for a function and the next day at breakfast (Mary’s) I asked her if she would mind if we stopped by Checkered Flag to look at a car. She agreed and after we both drove the car, we were hooked. I wasn’t leaving Checkered Flag without that car. It was a one owner and as it turned out Ruthi knew a girl that worked for the previous owners. Barry Cate sold us the car and he is a still a friend to this day. Tim Gifford, also a friend of Ruthi’s told us about FSR and the rest is history. Do you have a favorite Porsche? Oh Yeah! My absolute dream Porsche would be a GT3!
(356’s made a great showing)
(A classic 914 at the Classics)
Describe your perfect Porsche day: Doing anything with the club. Monthly breakfasts, fun runs, our weekend trips, and charity events! What is on your car-related bucket list? To own a GT3 and attend the Porsche Parade in New England. What keeps you in PCA? It really is the people. We have met so many great folks while in the club. It is one reason we have kept the Cayman! Replacing Your 996/997 Air Filter
Car Care C rner
Join us for Turkeys In The Trunk and an Oyster Roast!!
Reprinted from Pelican Parts’ Wayne Dempsey (www.pelicanparts.com)
Meet at Checkered Flag Porsche on Virginia Beach Blvd for the weigh-in at 12:30. Then caravan to the Mayflower Food Marathon to drop off food donations for the Southeastern Food Bank. Depart for a Fun Run to Suffolk to end up at the Coston’s house!
You should change the air filter in your Carrera every 10,000 miles or so. The air filter protects the fuel injection system and the air intake system from dust and debris that can be sucked in under normal operation. On the Carreras, the filter is just inside the air cleaner sitting in the engine compartment. To access the 996 Carreras filter, simply release the 7 large Phillips head screws that hold the top of the cleaner to the bottom part of the housing, release the intake boot connection to the throttle body, unplug the MAF sensor and remove the oil filler tube from the housing. Take a look inside the filter housing—there are usually some leaves or dirt that found their way in there. Clean the housing out before installing the new filter.
Saturday 22 Nov 2014 Hosted by: Jeff & Jennifer Coston 139 Brittany Lane, Suffolk VA All the event details and registration at www.motorsportreg.com
To access the 997 Carreras air filter you must remove the complete airbox housing from the car, as the Torx screws that hold the top of the housing on are secured from the bottom of the housing. Loosen the clamp holding the intake to the throttle body, remove the mass sensor and its harness, if you have a 3.8 you will need to disconnect the wire from the vacuum resonator, free the oil fill tube from its clip and gently lift the complete housing from the car. The oil fill tube can break, so be careful when removing the airbox. Once the housing is out of the car remove the retaining screws from the bottom. Make sure to clean the inside of the housing before installing a new filter.
Western New Member's Party Photo credit: Frank Keegan
Thanks to the Sarfaty's for hosting the New Member's Party at their house in Goochland. We had about 36 folks attend to the enjoy the perfect weather, great food and competitive fishing!!
For the Carrera there are basically two different types of air filters—the stock paper or cloth air filters and aftermarket units. These aftermarket units utilize an oil-soaked fabric to achieve freer airflow. The bottleneck for airflow in the 911 Carrera engine is not necessarily the air filter. The primary advantage of the aftermarket units is that you usually only have to purchase one, and it will last the life of your car. No matter what your friends tell you, these aftermarket filters will not add any significant horsepower to your engine. Many tests on a dynamometer have revealed that the freer-flow air filters do not suddenly “create” horsepower out of thin air. If you install one of these filters into your car and “swear” there’s more horsepower, then have a friend do a blind test for you. Have him switch the filters in and out at random and see if you can tell the difference. This is what is commonly called the placebo effect— perceiving significant gains in performance just because you added a “performance part.”
(George Michaels, President, welcoming new members)
The downside to using these aftermarket filters is that they often do not filter as well as the factory units. In addition, the use of aftermarket filters may cause excess dirt to accumulate in the mass airflow sensor and lead to its premature failure. The bottom line is that you need to carefully research any aftermarket filter before you install it into your car and carefully clean and maintain it thereafter. I personally prefer to use the stock OEM cloth/paper filters to ensure maximum filtering and protection. Whichever one you choose, make sure that it filters as well as or better than the original Porsche specifications. The air filter is quite easy to get to on the 996 Carrera. From inside the engine compartment loosen the seven screws that hold the top of the air cleaner housing to the bottom (blue arrows). Then loosen the clamp that holds the intake boot to the throttle body (green arrow). Unplug the mass air flow sensor (yellow arrow) and the clips mounting it to the air box (purple arrows) unclip the oil filler tube from its home on the left side of the air cleaner housing. With everything disconnected, simply lift up on the housing to expose the air filter. The red arrow points to the bolt that holds the lower section of the air box to the chassis and does not need to be removed to change the air filter. HORIzONTALLY OPPOSED

The 5th Annual Air and Auto Show . . . BEST YET!! By Phil Grandfield • Photo Credit: Steve Hudson Air & Auto Classic 5 Car Show Results People’s Choice Awards Domestic
If attendance, weather, charity proceeds, crowds, camaraderie and aircraft are good measures, the 5th Annual Air & Auto Classic was indeed the best yet. Thanks to our sponsors, volunteers, spectators and car owners for coming out to the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum on Saturday, October 18th for the latest iteration of what has become a very popular First Settlers’ event. We had a record number of cars with about 170 and, most importantly, we made about $8500 for charity! The proceeds will be distributed between the Foodbank of Southwestern Virginia and the Virginia Beach SPCA.

There was a great variety of vehicles including a vintage WW-II era BMW motorcycle, a brace of Ducati’s cafe racers, a wide-range of American muscle, antiques, European exotics and even some ecclectic cars. And, of course, Porsche was very well represented from pristine 356’s to a very rare GT-2 RS.

The cars ranged from a spectacular 1929 Franklin to a brand new Porsche Turbo displayed by Checkered Flag Porsche/Jaguar/Audi our primary event sponsor. Despite all of the well-polished, high-horsepower sports cars on display the Best-of-Show award went to a 1956 Chevy Bel Air station wagon!!
