From the President Jason Horner Another year is almost gone and the biggest holidays of the year are upon us along with some of our biggest events. Although winter will soon be here, it does mean you have to place your Porsche in hibernation. I was told before if you do not like the weather here in Virginia wait a few hours and it will change. Air & Auto 7 was a huge success and I cannot thank George Michaels and his (“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”)
fantastic team for putting on such a grand event. A huge thanks goes out to all the
sponsors and vendors who supported this event and again to all who volunteered in setting up and cleaning up after this event, we could not do events like this without the selfless giving of your time, a very special thanks goes out to all of you. There were plenty of Porsches and other autos to look at and there were also some great raffle items to be won along with some great food and beverages to sample. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Horizons Hampton Roads. Thanks to Checkered Flag’s Porsche dealership for once again hosting our Turkeys in the Trunk charity event. It was great seeing so many members in attendance and observing the many unique ways our members stuff their beloved Porsches with so many turkeys and other food items. A heartfelt thanks to everyone who either donated food or cash to help us support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia with their mission to provide food to the less fortunate local families so that they too may enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving. FSR members have again showed what true Thanksgiving is, in actually doing that – Giving. Nominations for our elected positions is now over and I would like to thank our nominating committee Brian Bremenstul, Brian Faulkner, and Jerry Burks for reaching out to everyone who was nominated for a board position and to all those members who have been so kind to accept their nomination. you will soon receive an email with the final list of nominees along with their bios and instructions on how to cast your vote. Priscilla the boys and I would like to wish everyone a joyous Thanksgiving. During this time of the year we pause to count our blessings, the freedom of this great country in which we live and its opportunity for achievement. Thanksgiving is more than the festivities, it gives us time to ponder upon what lessons we learnt, how we can spread happiness around, and to look back at all the great memories and good people who came into our lives. As the turkey and other goodies adorn the table and the toast to Thanksgiving is raised, let us take a moment to reflect and be thankful to the lord for all that we have been so abundantly blessed with and also to spare a thought for those not so lucky. It is a season of bountifulness and a reason to share the same.

Ken Thomas - Membership Chairperson Welcome to our new members and the transfers in to First Settlers Region. We hope you enjoy the people, Porsches and events and encourage you to come to an event, make some new friends and experience what your club has to offer.
What is your favorite personal car-related story? I mentioned that my first car was a 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS, but what I didn’t mention is that I bought it from FSR member Jason Rountree back in 2008 when I was 17 years old. It wasn’t until six years later in 2014 when I first joined the FSR that I would run into Jason again with his 2012 Porsche Cayman R. It’s a funny story that just goes to show how small the world can be sometimes! The best part is that I still own the Subaru and it serves as my daily commuter. SPOTLIGHT

Do you have a favorite Porsche? That’s a tough question to answer, but if we’re getting down to the specifics, I’ll say the #17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR (991) driven in the ISMA series in the GTlM class, driven by Wolf Henzler and Brian Sellers. I enjoyed watching the car race at VIR and Wolf Henzler is one of my favorite drivers. Sadly, Falken Tire removed the car from the series after the 2015 season, but I say it’s my favorite since I’ve been able to see the car in up close in person and race! Describe your perfect Porsche day. My perfect Porsche day would be attending a major Porsche enthusiast meet-up such as luftgekühlt. There are always tons of rare and unique Porsches at events such as this and you may run into some notable Porsche enthusiasts such as Patrick long, Magnus Walker, or even Patrick Dempsey just as you’re walking around checking out the cars.

September 2016 Fun Run By ed Merry Fall is now upon us. Football, autumn leaves, school, responsibilities. Before we know it, winter will come and , for many of us, fewer Porsche driving days. So as you read this, pause a moment, sit back and fondly remember our September 10th Fun Run from euroclassics Porsche west of Richmond to the Tyer's home overlooking the beautiful Rappahannock River. It was a wonderful Porsche memory indeed. The weather was perfect: a beautiful summer day, temperatures in the mid- 80s, sunny with a light breeze. Many beautiful Porsches and about 60 miles of lightly traveled twisty back roads. It was ideal for our beloved cars. But our club is more than just cars, it is the people and the camaraderie. especially when 24 Cars and 52 people arrived at the Tyer's home for a picnic of BBQ, fried chicken, beverages, and the fixings. Plus a spectacular view of the river. I for one can't think of a better Porsche day. But that event would not happen without a lot of help. Thanks to Brian, John and Christ plus the staff of euroclassics for a delightful breakfast to get us started. As well as time to look a new Porsches. The new blue/gray Boxster really caught my eye. you got us started on the right foot. Thanks to Vince and Teresa Canepa for driving the route in its early stages. Thanks to Dave and Nancy Wallace for a fresh set of eyes on the instructions as well as providing many very useful comments and corrections. Thanks to Gary and Robyn Tyer for opening their beautiful home to us. you are both most gracious hosts. your home is beautiful and the vista is magnificent. Finally thanks to my son, lee, and granddaughter, lauren, for helping me
explore roads and put together this Fun Run. Whenever I ask them to help with a fun run, they always are enthusiastic and eager to help. I also enjoy our time together putting on these events. As winter slips up on us, I may get my package of instructions and remember that wonderful September Saturday with the folks of First Settler's Region, PCA. Fortunately our winters are not harsh. So maybe I may take one of those cold, clear winter days and drive the route again. Since the leaves are off the trees, I might be able to see a dragon near Dragonville, VA. Drive Safe.

What is on your car-related bucket list? I’ll keep it reasonable and say having track-day at VIR. It will happen eventually and I know that the PCA already has track-days, just the timing hasn’t been right and I would like to put some work into the car to make it a track ready car before getting out there.

What keeps you in PCA? The cars are nice, but I would definitely have to say it’s the people that keep me around. Upon joining PCA, I’ve met some of the most genuine people who share the same passion for cars as I do and on top of that, there are ways to get involved by giving back through charity events and so forth. It’s such a wonderful community to be a part of!

wasn’t lit... Carey indicated it was more than likely nothing more than a loose bulb connection, and for a moment we considered pulling the dashboard to check it. But since my buddy Trip was waiting for me 4 hours south of Bremen in Columbus, ohio (and I had a 14 hour drive ahead), we decided against it. We checked the turn signals and brake lights, shook hands through the window, and Carey guided me as I backed out in the street at 6:05am. And then I was off…in a hand built car with only 124 miles of factory shakedown!
Beck 904 GTS: The Long Road Home - Part 2 by Kevin Pirkle Well, I’m happy to report that I made it home safely in the new Beck 904 GTS! What a spectacular experience to start my journey with this car behind the wheel on an 884 mile road trip from Bremen, Indiana to Chesapeake, Virginia…all in a single day with a great friend I’ve known since 1992.
Where do you live? Chesapeake, Virginia
SPOTLIGHT
What do you do for a living? I am a full time student. When I first bought my Porsche, I was working full time at Master Tool Repair in the shipping department for their e-commerce store,
About 40 minutes into the trip, dawn brought light into the car. I could now see my fuel level, oil pressure and temperature gauges. All was good. The only thing that would need fixing when I returned home (so far, at least) was a light in the left gauge. Suddenly, it started getting warm in the cockpit (appropriate name for the driver’s seat in this car). But why? I hadn’t turned on the heater fan and opened the vent to allow heat in from the custom heater boxes… oh, that’s why it was getting warm!?! The heater was so efficient that it softened my plastic heating vent louver on the firewall, which promptly fell between the two seats. No problem, however, as I called ahead to Trip in Columbus. He was all packed up and ready to go. He couldn’t wait to see the car, and with another hour before I would arrive, there was plenty of time for him to walk across the street to lowes from his hotel to get me some industrial Velcro to keep the vent louver in place for the rest of the trip. With a 90F day ahead, having engine heat pour into the car just wouldn’t do…
I arrived as anticipated at the airport in South Bend around lunchtime on August 26th. Kevin Hines, founder of Special edition, Inc. and long time personal friend of Chuck Beck, picked me up at the airport in the Special edition truck. Sharing laughs the entire way back to the shop made quick work of the drive, and we were back in Bremen in less than 30 Build Team minutes. The team at Special edition, Inc. had the 904 GTS ready for me when I arrived, and I could finally feel myself getting crazy excited as I walked into the front door of their facility. Carey Hines met me at the front door with a huge smile on his face, knowing that I was going to be very happy with his team’s work.
However, there was an upside to the fallen vent louver. I could now hear the engine much better! What an awesome morning drive down to Columbus from Bremen! By the time I arrived, it was getting warm, so I was glad that Trip had acquired the Velcro. I pulled into his hotel, and we looked over all the painted suspension bits to make sure nothing had moved. Success! The first four driving hours were complete, and nothing had come loose. With confidence high, we 904 on the road installed the Porsche emblems while in Columbus. Special edition couldn’t install these, as they are not allowed to badge the car with anything “Porsche”. I had already marked everything before meeting up with Trip, so we made fairly quick work of the badging. A 60mm 356 hub emblem fit perfectly into the steering wheel, and original 904 Carrera GTS emblems were fitted to the rear clamshell. original 904’s had stickers instead of hood emblems, but since most people wouldn’t understand, I decided on an orange bar emblem from an early 911. Now the Beck 904 GTS looked complete.
I shook Carey’s hand and walked straight back into his shop… WoW!!! I must have walked around the car a half dozen times just in awe of the final product. Seven short months earlier, this car was nothing but a bucket of resin, some stainless steel plate & bar and a build sheet from my desk… Carey said something to the effect of, “It’s yours… you can sit in it too… here are the keys. It’s ready for you to take her for a spin!” The next six hours were a blur. We test drove, talked, test drove and talked some more. Carey walked me through the owner’s manual he’d prepared for me, and we went down through my punch list to make sure both of us remembered everything we wanted to accomplish. And at every glance at the car, from any angle I looked, I couldn’t help but smile. It was finally here…the time had come to take delivery! At 7pm, Carey and I were the last ones in the shop. We had both covered all of our bases, and it was time to retire for the evening and return o’dark early in the morning. Kevin Hines was more gracious than I could ever have imagined. He invited me to stay at his lake home for the evening in lieu of a hotel, which was a real treat! Carey even loaned me the keys to his Mercedes SUV to drive to his father’s house. Kevin’s charming wife made us pulled pork barbeque sandwiches and fresh fruit salad for dinner. Afterwards, Kevin and I sat on their back deck eating ice cream and home made brownies while watching the sunset (until the mosquitos chased us back inside). They were simply awesome, sharing story after story about the early days of their family, Carey growing up around dad’s business ventures, and of course, stories about Chuck Beck and how they came to be friends. By the end of the night, I felt as if we’d been friends for many years. Certainly not what I expected when I decided to purchase the 904 GTS, but I’ve learned that buying a hand built car from a small, family owned business is much different than ordering a new car from an international auto manufacturer!
By this time, I’d already been given many thumbs up from passing cars along the way. A couple of folks were also recording video while driving past. At least a half dozen people stopped me at red lights to ask what this car was and/or what year it was…all of them smiling while barely making eye contact with me. So by the time In the real world. . . we headed to the exxon to fill up, I was ready for the drivers of three different cars to come up and ask about the car. My pal, Trip, just stood back to take a picture or two and chuckled silently as he watched me answer the same questions over and over. After fueling, we stopped at a local car show beside a diner, and we even considered joining in the fun. There were some fun cars there to see, but with 10 hours of driving ahead, we opted to get on the road.
I was up and at ‘em at 4:30am on Saturday morning, August 27th to meet Carey at the shop by 5:30am. I grabbed a cup of coffee at the Miller Mart across the street, and Carey pulled in just moments after me. Arriving at the shop again was surreal. This time wasn’t just to inspect the final product or shake down the car. This was the moment I’d been waiting for since last october when I sent Carey the deposit… the road trip back to Virginia!
As we left Columbus and entered the wide open interstate, Trip asked me to floor the pedal…he’d come all the way from Italy where he works for the Department of Defense, all just for the purpose of joining me on the trip home in the Beck. This was HIS moment. As I slowed the car to around 50mph, I dropped to 2nd gear and matted the pedal. launch.
I started the GTS at 6:01am. Carey and I both smiled. The sound of the 3.6l was intoxicating. Then I turned on the lights. The left gauge HoRIzoNTAlly oPPoSeD

What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? ever since I bought my first car, a 1998 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS, I’ve enjoyed auto-crossing with the oDR-SCCA and TSCC. other than motorsports racing, I enjoy collecting die-cast cars, mainly from Hot Wheels, Matchbox, and Kyosho in 1:64 scales, but I do have a variety of other scaled size models in my collection. It’s also no surprise that there are a lot of Porsches in my collection! PCA Member since? May 2014. First Settlers Member since? May 2014. What kind of Porsche(s) do you drive? 2000 Porsche Carrera 911 (996) C2 Coupe. What other Porsches have you owned in the past? None, my current Porsche is the only one I’ve owned, but I would like to purchase a 993 C2 Coupe in the future. What is your first Porsche memory? My first Porsche memory comes from Hot Wheels. I can remember collecting and playing with them with my brother when we were kids. We always bought the licensed cars such as Ferrari, lamborghini, and Porsche. My favorite Hot Wheels car as a kid was a red Porsche 911, or as Hot Wheels labeled it, the “P911,” which

through downtown. I stumbled across America’s Packard Museum in the building that was the original dealership in 1917. Who knew? Unfortunately, my lack of planning resulted in showing up before the museum opened for the day and I had a plane to catch. All I could do was look at the collection through the plate-glass windows. The museum includes more than 50 cars, from 1900s Brass era cars to the streamlined Classic cars of the 1930s and 1940s, and modern Packards of the Packard Museum in Dayton, ohio 1950s, as well as war machines, parts, accessories, and original sales and service literature. Maybe next time with better planning…..

We both grinned. Up to 3rd and a redline shift to 4th. Then I matted the pedal again… oops. This time, we got a surprise, as I noticed the pedal had overcome the Tek screw accelerator pedal stop, causing the pedal to stick… With a car that accelerates as fast as this one (0-60mph in 3.2 secs per the factory), quick thinking was in order. I was already well over legal speed limits (in any state), and I only had 2000 RPM left in 4th gear before redline was back again. Fortunately, I was able to quickly free the pedal, and I called Carey from the road to ask about the design. No sweat…easy fix upon returning home, and Randy Beck said, “Good for him…I suppose he’s driving it! Maybe his big foot needs a stronger pedal stop!” The rest of the way home was just incredible…in spite of the fact that I chose to stay conservative by sticking to interstate highways. With the maiden voyage occurring on a weekend, and likely with few Porsche specialty shops on famous roads such as the Triple Nickel in ohio, I wanted to make sure we could be reached easily by tow truck if needed. The mountains of West Virginia were just gorgeous, and as the sun approached the end of it’s daily routine, we got the chance to test the windows and wipers. The rain was short-lived, however, and we had the windows back down within about 10 minutes. Headlights now on, we were nearing Staunton, where our fellow FSR members were enjoying our annual Charity event. John lee had been communicating to us through our Facebook updates that Trip had been manning throughout the trip, and although we seriously considered stopping, we again decided to press on for Chesapeake. The last four hours of our trip were just about sharing friendship and discussing life events, family, etc. It was fantastic to catch up with Trip after so many months of him being stationed in Naples. I’m grateful for something like a car bringing us together again, and this was a trip that both of us knew we’d never forget. We stopped by the Norfolk airport parking garage to pick up my company vehicle, and by now, we were both starting to feel tired. The trip went fast, and incredibly enough, the race chassis of the 904 GTS was far from uncomfortable. But being up for 20 hours straight will start to get to anyone, so my driveway was a welcome sight after 884 miles at around 12:15am! of course, anyone who knows me also knows I can’t go to sleep with bugs all over the front of the car, so I didn’t finally hit the sack until about an hour later. lying there as I reflected on the day, I couldn’t help but think how much The grins tell it all :) enjoyment we’d derived from the trip home. I think the last thing I remember before falling asleep was the sound of the exhaust in the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel…visceral symphony.

More recently work took me to Bettendorf, Iowa. I spotted a collector car showroom across the street from the conference center and stopped in to check it out. Veit’s Vettes had a great collection of cars for sale including a 2008 Ferrari F430, a 1968 Chevelle SS396, and very cool 1948 lincoln Continental V-12 Coupe. The most unique car was a 1961 Corvair Rampside pick-up truck with a flat-six under the bed and a side-load door in the bed. All of them are for sale. Which one would you want to drive to Florida? Check it them out at www.VvNcc.com.

Maintaining Classic Porsches By Joe Finkle
What’s precious to you is precious to us.
For those of you who own a Classic Porsche and are reading this article, I would like to unofficially apologize on behalf of Porsche Cars North America and Porsche Aktiengesellschaft for a lacking relationship between Classic Porsche owners, their respective Porsche Dealership and Porsche AG. Both PCNA and PAG have realized this void and have established a solid plan and goal to reunite Classic Porsche owners with their local Porsche Dealerships.
SM S
The plan and end goal starts with technician training which I have recently had the pleasure of spending four days in ontario, California attending the P06C - Classic 911 General Servicing and Repair class. The class covered 911s manufactured from 1965 to 1998 or better known as 356 to 993. As with all classes at the Porsche Academy the morning was spent in theory and the afternoons were all hands on. The morning session of Day 1 of Fun was a superficial history lesson in the progression of the 911 throughout the 33 year span and how each model was physically different and how to identify them. In the afternoon session we briefly glanced over a few technically upgraded parts for the 911 SC engines and then began the engine removal process of a 1997 993 in Guards Red. Day 2 began with a deeper look into differences between Classic 911s by using a wall sized visual chart listing each year in a row and then placing cards with technical changes to the matching vehicle. 1989 won for most technical upgrades in a single model. As exciting as that exercise was our team was ready to get back to finishing the removal of the motor and separation of the transmission. Shortly after lunch our mission was complete and we wrapped up the day with learning about parts that were commonly replaced and have been superseded for 930/20 M64.60 engines. Days 3 and 4 were an intensive, in-depth, informative hands- on experience with fine tuning of the engines and drivetrains of the 911 SC, 964, and 993. We finished up the technical session with common repairs and technical upgrades to body and chassis components. The week finishes the same as all other weeks with a post-test, a gift bag filled with Porsche goodies, and a week of knowledge that is worth its weight in gold.

What does this mean for you? you now will have access to a factory trained technician who has the ability to communicate within a small network of technicians and engineers that are devoted to repairing and upgrading Classic Porsches. Upgrading? yes, Upgrading. Porsche's Classic Division's first installment comes in the form of the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System. This upgrade is available for all Classic models with DIN1 slot from the 911 F to the 911 (Type 993), as well as for four and eight-cylinder vehicles, excluding the 356. The system features iPhone, iPod, USB and AUX interfaces allowing you to control external music sources from the display. Bluetooth functionality means that you can make calls directly from your vehicle. Best part is the radio fits seamlessly in the dashboard with two different knob designs to suit vintage vehicles designs and the overall classic design of the radio really does reflect the analog heritage.

Some of you may be asking, "Why now?". Truth is, the guys who were wrenching on these cars when they first came to the states have already retired or are very close to it and they take their knowledge with them. This alone was enough to get Porsche's attention. Another truth is that young guys like myself are intrigued by these Classic vehicles and the heritage of the Porsche brand and want to know and learn more about it. I for one enjoy and thank you for allowing me to tinker on your Classics. The biggest truth of them all is that Porsche owners in general love their cars and when it comes to Classic Porsche owners, they really love their cars. I have had the pleasure of talking with Classic Porsche owners who have had the same vehicle since they bought it when it first came out and the connection between owner and car can only be described as inseparable passion fueled by nostalgia. This is why Porsche AG, PCNA, Porsche Trainers, and Classic Porsche Technicians have come together to keep your Classic Porsche going.
Car Culture on the Road By Phil Grandfield Deer lodge is town of 3,600 folks in the middle of nowhere,
somewhere in Montana. It is the home of the old Montana Prison - built in 1871, operated until the 1970’s, and now a museum and the Montana Auto Museum – voted one of the Top Ten car museums in the country by USA Today. Who knew? Josie and I stopped in Deer lodge for lunch during our vacation and decided to check out both attractions. Great decision! The prison tour was eye-opening to see what prison life was like back-in-theday but the real treat was next door…..
The Classic Porsche Classroom
Muscle Cars in the Montana Auto Museum
I was expecting a few, run-of-the-mill collector cars sitting in a warehouse and was blown away by the collection. The eclectic collection runs through time from an 1855 Mormon Hand Cart and a 1903 Ford Model A Runabout through a limited edition 1978 Corvette. In between includes a DeSoto Airflow, Model T’s, V-8 Fords, six ’56-57 Chevy Bel Air’s, a Ford Mustang GT500 fastback ‘eleanor’, and a Chevelle Super Sport. A 1915 Seagrave Fire Truck, a Diamond T logging truck, a Vincent Amanda Motor Scooter, a Detroit electric Car from 1913, and a 1964 Chevrolet Corvette Show Car customized in 1989. The sole Porsche is a one-owner 1956 356A Coupe. There is an amazing run of cars from every decade and example of every serious muscle car from the ’60 and ‘70’s. About 160 in all. It is a must-see museum the next time you’re passing though Deer lodge! earlier in the year work took me to Dayton, ohio. I had some time to kill on my way back to the airport and decided to drive (Continued on page 12)

Turkeys in the Trunk 2017
Air & Auto Classics #7 It was another perfect day at the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum for the 2016 version of the Air & Auto Classic Car Show. Many of us were happy to be recovering from the impact of Hurricane Mathew the previous weekend and enjoying the sunshine in a great venue for a car show. And a great show it was!
904 GTS - Best in Show!
Thanks to all of our sponsors, especially our title sponsor Checkered Flag Porsche, for all of your continued support. This charity car show wouldn’t happen without you. Thanks also to George Michaels for leading the charge in setting up this event. It all looks easy to the people who attend the show but it takes months of planning by George and the core team of volunteers taking charge of the various departments. Many hands also pitch-in during the day to execute the “Plan of the Day”. lastly, thanks to everyone who attended to either show their car and just spectate and take it all it. What’s a party if no one shows up? Congratulations to the trophy winners; especially to Kevin Pirkle for Best in Show in his awesome 904 GTS. The bottom line for charity was $9500 raised for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Horizons Hampton Roads!!
See you again next year for Air & Auto #8! Josie Grandfield, Charity Coordinator with Dick Trowbridge, executive Director of Horizons Hampton Roads at the show.

“Turkeys” is easily one of the fan-favorite events of the year proven again by the great turnout and generous donations from our members. Just like all of the charity events hosted by First Settlers Region, we owe a continued debt of gratitude to Checkered Flag for their hospitality and sponsorship. Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful members we raised $15,150 (including proceeds from Air & Auto) and 4871 pounds of food!! That will provide A loT of holidays meals to needy families in our communities at Thanksgiving. A special thanks to John Hall, the General Manager at Checkered Flag, who lets us take over the service bays to set up the food weigh-in and enjoy a snack and a chat. This year we jumped right to desert with a variety of pies from the Village Inn Restaurant. Who needs lunch when you have to decide between Chocolate Silk and Key lime? (easy – take both….) Congratulations to Vince and Teresa Canepa for winning the “Weight Checkered Flag and First Settlers are great partners for charity. Challenge” with 396 pounds of food in their Boxster! They walked away with a very nice Porsche luggage bag courtesy, of course, of Checkered Flag. Vince was feeling pretty confident with his entry until Jeff and Jen Coston opened their trunks. The Costons came in a solid second place with 346 pounds and lots of turkeys! After the food drop off at the Mayflower Marathon, we enjoyed a short drive through Pungo to end up at the Michaels’ house. Not many people have a garage nice enough to host a dinner party but they do! The catered food was delicious and the evening was a great end to a wonderful day. Thanks to First Settlers members for giving back to our community in such a positive way. lastly, thanks to Josie Grandfield for her dedication to all things charity. We all enjoy the joy of giving for Thanksgiving but your efforts make it fun and much more worthwhile. Thanks for all you do!!

through downtown.

Check it them out at www.VvNcc.com.

wasn’t lit...

He enjoys attending the FSR monthly breakfast meetings along with me and other car related events; my mother is a Kindergarten teacher at St. Peter’s Day School. While she does not share the same passion for cars as the rest of my family, she puts up with cars and is supportive of it all; and my older brother is also a huge car enthusiast, a member of the BMWCCA, and owns a BMW e30 325i and e36 M3.
