From the President Jason Horner I can hardly believe that there is less than a month until summer is over. I hope all of you had plenty of opportunities to take your Porsche(s) out and create lasting memories. I personally am looking forward to the cooler weather and the changing of the foliage along with hoping to see many of you at some of our events like our Fall Fun Run, the Classics on the Green, (“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”)
and one of my all-time favorites the annual Air & Auto Classic which is going
into its sixth year of production and is an event I am sure you will not want to miss. Please visit our club page on MotorsportReg, www.fsrpca.motorsportreg.com to see all of our upcoming events and to register. If you have

https://www.facebook.com/groups/Firstsettlers/ to receive updates, share stories, ask questions and share pictures of your Porsche(s). We are approaching that time of year again for elections and our nominating committee will be announced soon. Though many of us on the board plan to run for re-election there is nothing wrong with tossing your name in the hat, having some friendly competition, and serving your club as an officer or Committee Chair. Remember this is your club and we are always looking for fresh ideas. The success of your club depends on a dedicated group of dozens of volunteers ranging from event chairs to your board of directors. There would be no club if not for this group. If you have participated in any of our charity events, De’s, fun-runs, or tours you have seen first-hand the effort being put into organizing these events. We are always looking for new ideas and to fill termed out board positions or to just give others a break and to keep them from becoming burned out. If you have any questions or would like more information about a particular position please contact the incumbent or myself. The new school year has begun and I urge you to slow down and use caution as students return to school along with being aware of your local school zones and their speed limits. This is an especially important time to check your driving behavior and ensure you are practicing the safest driving habits. Remember it is not only school buses and children to be looking out for, but also the student driver who will be on the road driving to high school for the first time and is not accustomed to the hazards of everyday driving as many us may be. Take the time to be thankful for all you have and for good health, be safe,

Name: Dave Wallace Where do you live? Richmond.
Henrico County, west of
What is on your car-related bucket list? A trip to Germany to visit the Porsche factory and museum, as well as visiting the BMW and Mercedes locations.
What do you do for a living? I have been employed by Henrico County in the Public Utilities department for 36 years. I work with customers’ water and sewer accounts.
SPOTLIGHT
What keeps you in PCA? Being able to get together with other Porsche people. owning and driving the car is great, but any Porsche owner who is also a real “car person” is missing half of the enjoyment if he is doing it by himself.
Tell us about your family. My family is my wife Nancy. We dated in high school and college but then we didn’t see each other again for about 40 years. We reconnected in 2008 and got married in 2010. She enjoys the car almost as much as (“Dave and Nancy Wallace with their beautiful 911”) I do and also looks forward to PCA activities. She has been helping with FSR’s charity activities in the Richmond area.
on 17 october, we will be hosting our sixth annual Air & Auto Classic car show at the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. Air & Auto brings in about one-third of First Settlers’ annual eventdriven charity proceeds. We had about 80 show cars at our first event in 2010 and an estimated 300 spectators in attendance, raising $3000 for the Foodbank and Virginia Beach SPCA. last year's Air & Auto Classic 5 brought a show field of 170 cars, an estimated 500 spectators and raised $8500. our goal for 2015 is to raise $10,000. The show’s net revenue comes from sponsorships, registrations, vendor contributions and raffle ticket sales. We have no administrative costs and, over the past five years, we have been able to significantly reduce the costs of putting on the show. We cannot predict how many cars we will have on the field or how many spectators will come to check it out, so that leaves sponsorships as a sure way to meet our goal.
(“Dave Wallace on his favorite street”)
What other hobbies do you have besides driving your Porsche? I like working on the cars. Nancy helps me in the garage. We replaced the suspension bushings in our car and a friend and I have replaced clutches in two of his 912s. We are currently redoing a spare 912 engine of his.
NEW PCA/FSR MEMBERS Ken Thomas - Membership Chairperson Welcome to our new members and the transfers in to First Settlers Region, PCA’s 2012 Region of the year. What other Porsches have you owned in the past? I started with a 1967 912 in 1978. It was an 11 year old car then, and it took me another 16 years to get the 911 that was 20 years old when I got it. A friend now owns the 912 so I can still drive and work on it. What is your first Porsche memory? Driving a friend’s 1976 911S. I had owned a Camaro and I had driven a Corvette and a few muscle cars that belonged to other people I knew. I was amazed that the feel and response of the 911 were so far above any other car I had ever experienced. Driving that car convinced me that I had to have one.

If you have a business or would like to become an individual show sponsor, we have several sponsorship levels available. All sponsorship levels offer a number of benefits including vendor space on the flight line, logo/company name on the show t-shirt and announcements during the show. So, sponsorships are a great marketing opportunity as well as a community service gesture. We are also soliciting items and services to be donated for the Silent Auction. Please contact Josie Grandfield at anurse47@yahoo.com if you have anything to donate or would like to volunteer to help the Charity Committee during the event.

What is your favorite personal car-related story? Back in the days when I was young and foolish, and I would drive way too fast, I got all four wheels off of the ground while driving on a hilly road in my 1961 Ford. Two friends were on the side of the road with cameras, so I have the pictures to prove it. It scares me today to think about it, but I still pull out those pictures every now and then. Do you have a favorite Porsche? A 1972-73 era Carrera RS would be it. There’s just something about a duck tail spoiler and flared fenders. Describe your perfect Porsche day. Porsche Cars North America Headquarters – A Success Story! By Wayne Steltz I was recently on a business trip to meet with a client in Atlanta GA, and finishing sooner than expected, unsuccessfully tried to book an earlier flight home. With time to kill, I decided to recon the new Porsche Cars North America Headquarters near the perimeter of Atlanta Hartsfield Airport. As Phil Grandfield reported in the previous issue of Ho, the facility is an impressive sight when you pull up to the gate at the entrance to the property.
(“Some cars from the Porsche Driving experience”)
time was available, should I want to take advantage of it. She directed me inside and told me to proceed to the experience center desk, where I was greeted by a very friendly staff that provided me an overview of the facility and invited me to explore as much as I wanted, with the exception of the immediate track and paddock. I first grabbed a bite, and then stepped right outside the small cafeteria to chat with a PCA member from Chattanooga whose husband was out on the Driving experience test track. There are a variety of models to choose from if you opt to buy the driver experience, including Boxsters, various 911 models and Cayennes or Macans. Which would you choose? https://www.porschedriving.com/experiences/driving-experiences. (“A beautiful collection of Porsches on display”)
Cognizant of my flight times, I decided start exploring inside. The facility is high tech steel and concrete throughout, and impressive in its own right. Small groups of customers and Dealers were there on this day, but the facility was not crowded by any means. you are able to see some evidence day to day office activity behind glass walls, but the purpose of the public access portion of this facility is obviously meant
Security at the front gate politely asked if I had an appointment, to which I replied ‘no’, but I offered my PCA membership card, asking if I could look around the facility. After phoning inside for ‘clearance’ the security guard informed me that I was cleared to look around, and that simulator
I bought my first Porsche – a Boxster S – as a 50th birthday present to myself. I started going to De’s about a year later and haven’t stopped. In fact, I decided I needed a more dedicated track car so I bought an e36 M3 from John Kopp at Racewerks about 5 years ago. I’ve lost count of my track days but I make it to the track three or four times a year. I recently became a Porsche Club instructor and have thoroughly enjoyed the teaching aspect of this sport. But the “racing” part of my hobby still eluded me. I was honored, excited and nervous about being asked to join TCR for the Summit Point race. I was finally going to go racing but would I be fast enough, have enough endurance for a two hour stint, and be able to keep the shiny side up? The answers were yes! I wasn’t the fastest but wasn’t the slowest guy on the track and think we even advanced a position during my stint. The two hours went quickly and I wanted more. And I learned that there really isn’t a shiny side to Chump Cars but I brought the car back in the same condition I left in. The best thing about the Chump Weekend was the racing camaraderie which is amplified when you’re part of a team compared to driving your own car for a De. everyone pitched in and had ‘ownership’ of the results. I also learned that De is fun but racing is really fun! The most surprising aspect was the quality of the driving in the Chump Series. I expected the drivers to have plenty of track day experience but I was anticipating more antics, recklessness and ‘red mist’ when putting (relatively) inexpensive race cars, driven by non-racing licensed drivers, onto a track all racing for the checkered flag. I found the racing to be very clean with plenty of racing room given and taken. There was clearly a sense of ‘brother (and sister) hood’ on the track and in the paddock. My thanks to the TCR team managers and team mates! It was a great weekend! My only regret is that I waited until two months before my 60thbirthday to finally go racing!!”

Next up was our friend Pat Seminaris from Palmyra, VA. Pat has done a little bit of everything, 20+ years of De, 2 years of Autocross, 2 years of Showroom Spec Miata racing, and 1.5 years of Time Trials in a Corvette. His experience showed when after getting in TCR 1 for the very first time, with a possible top 5 finish on his shoulders, he was able to run his 2 hours with zero incidents.

“The best thing about the weekend is the camaraderie with teammates. The TCR team made me feel like I had been member for a long time. Racing amazes me with how your competitors are so friendly. They will talk with you about anything and help you out anyway they can. The biggest surprise of the weekend was driving for a 2 hour stint. I had never raced for more than 40 minutes at one time. The cool shirt keep me refreshed and not at all tired at the end of the 2 hours.” (“on display at the PCNA HQ in Atlanta”)
to immerse the customer in the Porsche experience. It was literally a spiritual experience as I walked alone through two levels of museum displays, in dead silence. Noteworthy cars are on display throughout the facility, and I was so transfixed that I forgot to note details of the individual cars, concentrating on taking photos (after being granted permission). Time went by quickly, so after two passes to insure I didn’t miss anything, and a quick look through the Porsche gift shop, I grudgingly headed out into the Atlanta humidity and rush hour traffic to return my rental car and catch my late afternoon flight.
our final driver, and the team captain for TCR 1 was Chris Stanley, from Virginia Beach. He put the bow around our fourth place finish. Awesome job Chris, and Great job TCR 1 team! I hope I’ve inspired a few to check out this De/Amateur Racing thing, it’s a lot of fun!

of time to get to know the course, neither of us had been on it before and by that first initial passing, we never passed each other again (based on our in-car cameras). We stayed on opposite sides of the track for the duration of the heat! With 21 turns in a 2-mile track, it was brutal and the Roller Coaster (“The Bowl”) would kick the ass of the best avid amusement park ride buff! In the end, TCR1 finished its full 2-hour stint, while TCR2 came in after 1 ½ hour for fuel.
First Settlers Members Go Chump Racing By Ron Boustedt BMWCCA The West Virginian hills resonated with the sound of Chump race cars on the 13th and 14th of June. each day was run as an individual race with Saturday being a 10 hour endurance race and Sunday a 6. We were blessed with dry weather up until the very end on Sunday, with temps in the high 80’s, low 90’s. Perfect weather for a late spring race.
I learned 2 things at Summit Point: heel-toe is paramount at this track and maybe, just maybe I would give my husband a run for his money again on the next track event!”
For the Team Constitutional Racing (TCR) team it was a weekend of HIGH’s, and low’s. on Saturday our TCR 1 (Free Driving second was my buddy Speech) team finished the 10 hour Jonathan Noriega, of Racewerks race with an outstanding fourth fame, and native of Chesapeake. place finish in their white BMW Jonathan is an avid auto-crosser, but e30! Amazing job against some has only attended a few De’s. I hate really fast cars in the 32 car field. to say it, as a 48 year old guy, but Unfortunately the second BMW youth definitely has its advantages; e30 TCR 2 (Bear Arms) was Jonathan was greased lightning on the knocked out by a failed clutch. track and definitely held up his end of even worse it happened when I the bargain. was driving in the 6th hour. We haven’t pulled the tranny yet so I’m “I'd like to start by thanking everyone not 100% sure what failed, but it that was a part of the TCR crew that didn’t sound good. Major bummer allowed two 22 year olds from because we were running fifth at Chesapeake to take the reins of a well the time. This would have made sorted e30 without hesitation. With (“Team Constitutionalist Racing #1 BMW e30”) for two top five finishes in the same one De and a few years of autocross race…that would have been AWeSoMe! We’ll get there. under my belt I had no idea what I was in for. Thankfully the car was good; I mean really good. I found myself passing car after car and With TCR 2 out of commission we focused our efforts on TCR 1 for forgetting about the rear view mirrors completely (probably should of Sunday. About 3 hours into the 6 hour race things went south when pay more attention to that). Apart from sharing the track with deer, the one of the drivers went off and nosed her into a jersey wall. Fortunately rest of my experience was truly unforgettable. I'm hooked!” the driver is fine, but TCR 1 didn’t fare as well. We’re assessing the damage, but it’s looking like we may need to do a complete tub swap. Third up was one of my former students, and another Chesapeake native, Brandon Hodges. Brandon, of Sports and Imports fame, was also one of our newbie hot shoes. In fact, with one De and 4 years of Autocross experience (and I HATe to say this) he turned the third fastest lap of the entire race, above me (as the fourth) and 30 other cars, and countless other drivers. We’ll have to keep our eye on Brandon.
In an effort to further tantalize folks into the High Performance Driving, and Racing experience I asked (bribed with offers of free TCR t-shirts) our Saturday TCR 1 drivers to provide some comments on their Summit Point racing experience. These are the folks that combined their efforts to get TCR 1 to her 4th place finish on Saturday. each drove for approximately two hours, and for some this was their very first race. In each case I’ll provide a little ‘Ron’ perspective as a lead into their driving segment.
By Phil Grandfield Can you name an international, coast-to-coast, racing series that holds 32 races per year and is run strictly by volunteers? Hint – it’s not the International Motorsports Association (IMSA), NASCAR, Formula one or the World endurance Championship (WeC). National Auto Sport Association (NASA) would be a good guess but its run as a business by the various regions - not by volunteers. of course, it’s our very own PCA and you can be a part of the action! The Porsche Club of America runs 32 races per year, in the U.S. and Canada. And at some of the greatest tracks in the country to include the Virginia International Raceway (VIR), Watkins Glen, Sebring, Daytona, Mid-ohio, Road Atlanta, lime Rock Park, Charlotte Motor Speedway and others within a day’s drive of our area. Not bad for a car club that is not completely focused on racing. And, unlike most of the other amateur racing series, is run entirely by volunteers. Another example is the BMW Car Club of America’s Racing program, also run by volunteers (though with fewer races), and some of our First Settlers Region track junkies are also BMW club racers. The PCA Club Race at Summit Point hosted by the Potomac Region is September 25-27th and they are actively seeking volunteers to help run the event. The event chair is Fred Pfeiffer, (301) 729-2407. He can help get you involved as a volunteer. Unlike the zone 2 Club Race at VIR, the Summit Point race uses volunteer flaggers to man the corner stations. Contact our own Scott Hoffman if you’re interested in learning how to get involved in flagging. Scotthoffman11@earthlink.net. Here are more details about how PCA Club Racing works and how it compares to Drivers’ education. The basic structure of Club Racing involves a national PCA Club Racing Committee, the PCA National office, and the Regions. The PCA Club Racing Committee maintains the Club Racing Rule Book, determines the licensing Procedures, and oversees all the planning of a Club Race. one or several Regions organize each Race, and have full financial responsibility for their Race. In addition, each licensed racer receives Club Racing's official bimonthly publication called the Club Racing News. The Club Racing Program is also grateful for the tremendous support of our National Sponsors. The PCA National office provides administrative support and establishes/maintains all activities associated with the national licensing of Club Racers. licensing questions should be directed (“zone 2 Club Race at VIR volunteer team 2015”) (Continued on page 6)
“The best thing about the weekend for me was the fact that I was finally able to get out and compete in my first race wheel to wheel with other drivers. I have wanted to race for a long time now and I thought I would be limited to only De’s because I would never have a car to properly race with, so it was a great opportunity given to me by TCR to come drive their car. There were a couple of big surprises this weekend but I will say the best surprise was that as a team we placed 4th and that was the first top 5 finish TCR had got. I’m glad I was able to be a part of that milestone.”
Starting the race in TCR 1, side by side with her husband John in TCR 2, was Gina Schwaebler. Gina is a longtime TCR 1 driver, and regularly turns the quickest laps of the team. She’s a straight shooter that takes pride in carrying her weight and bit more. She’s a leader and that’s why she started the race. “I’ve never really considered myself a competitive person with anyone except myself; I was genuinely happy for those who did well and always talked with those who asked to know my thoughts on a track if I had gone on before them. But something happens when you get the chance to run in the same stint as your husband. Now, I knew that it was likely that I would not be able to keep up with John as TCR2 was always faster than TCR1 (God rest her soul) and we never ran the same heat—ever, until now.
Fourth was Phil Grandfield. Phil is from Virginia Beach, is the editor of the local PCA newsletter, and active member of the PCA club (another trend: if you drive on the track you’re a friend, regardless of marquis). Club Racing was established around several guiding principles. First, there should be a class for all Porsche sports cars, including both street and modified cars. Second, the racing is to be fun, safe, and clean. This principle is embodied in the strict enforcement of the '13/13 Rule', which provides for immediate sanctions against any driver at fault in any incident involving car damage. Third, the organization and operation of Club Races is to be uniform, so that any racer may attend any Club Race and know exactly what to expect.

It is the combination of national rules, national licensing, the national committee, and the enthusiastic and dedicated host Region personnel that has allowed Club Racing to build a strong racing program while rigorously adhering to these principles. Further, it is the belief of the PCA executive Council and all those involved with Club Racing that continued adherence to these principles is the basis for continuing success in the future. The Porsche Club of America also offers an alternate on-track driving experience called Driver education (De). The mission and purpose of the De Program is to provide a safe, structured, and controlled teaching and learning environment. The PCA De Program is designed so the participant can improve his or her driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety at various tracks around the country.

I’m the one and only proud owner of a 1973 911T that I picked up at the factory in Stuttgart while stationed in Germany 42 years ago. My Porsche is what you would call a driver; it was our second car and I drove it to work regularly for many years. It is far from concours condition, but it does look pretty good from 10 feet away! I always wanted to attend a parade and there were many opportunities, but something always seemed to come up. When we heard the parade would be in French lick, Indiana, we said this is the one we'll go to for sure. Being from Indiana and still having lots of family there, we could combine the parade with a visit back home. My wife, Pat, is from ohio so we made the stop with her family on the return trip to Virginia.
A small group of First Settlers members took some time on Friday, July 24th to visit with the Horizons Hampton Roads program in Portsmouth. Horizons is our newest sponsored charity so we were interested in learning more about the program and meeting some of the kids and staff. We all walked away very impressed with what Horizons Hampton Roads has accomplished but mostly with the kids we met. Their enthusiasm and self-confidence were inspiring! There is no doubt that Horizons is making a difference in the lives of these kids. Horizons is focused on the education and development of local low-income
Driving a 42 year old Porsche out there and back had me a little concerned, but not to worry. The car performed flawlessly. We traveled out with Mark and luana Hugel which made a more enjoyable trip although Pat would probably say without A/C in the 73 it wasn’t all that enjoyable! Hey, we made it there by Sunday afternoon, got checked in, found our hotel and then started looking around at all the Porsches. I’ve never seen so many Porsches in one place: all models, all years, all colors, it was fantastic! The location was great, too. The French lick and West Baden hotels are real treasures and a very fitting background for showing off the Porsches.

achievement gap increases through the summer with the kids losing 2-3 months of advantage in reading and math. These kids are six times more likely to drop out of high school and a 50% chance of being unemployed. The goal of Horizons Hampton Roads is to close the achievement gap. They are a 501(c) (3) and have been operating locally since 1999. Partnered with Norfolk, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth public schools, they provide a six-week, full-day summer academic, cultural and social enrichment program for over 350 local area grade K-8 kids. During the Concours d’ elegance on Monday, we saw a car almost exactly like mine, except it was an S while mine is a T. It had the same color, oxford Blue, and same interior, but way less mileage, 42K to my 129K. It won first place in the preservation category in class. All the cars were spectacular; you could tell that these folks are serious about their Porsches. Monday evening we enjoyed a good German meal with the other FSR members at the Parade in French lick’s only authentic German restaurant. on Tuesday, Pat and I, along with 100+ other Porsches, drove to Indianapolis, had a German meal at the Ratskeller and then drove our cars onto the Indianapolis Motor Speedway! What a rush! It probably was the highlight of the Parade for me, to get to drive my car on the Indy 500 brickyard! of course, we couldn’t air it out, but I thoroughly enjoyed just driving around the track. Coming off that 4th turn and seeing the grandstands and the leader pole in the distance was definitely a thrill. Tuesday evening’s banquet in the rotunda of the West Baden hotel under the beautifully restored dome was very special. Besides a great meal, the award presentations, the speakers, and the Porsche enthusiasts who had attended so many Parades, made for a very enjoyable evening.
volunteers during the summer. Their overall budget is only about $1M per year and comes from donations so our First Settlers donations make a big difference to this important program. Please keep Horizons in mind when making your donations and look for our next visit with the kids in 2016!
Wednesday morning we did our volunteer time, traded stories with fellow Porsche enthusiasts, looked at more beautiful Porsches, and then headed out for northern Indiana and family. The next time we will stay for the whole week and participate in more activities, but this was good for our first Porsche Parade. It was well worth the trip!

Porsche Parade Experiences – 2015 By Various First Settlers Members By Dave McFaddin
By Alex Bell, PCA National DE Chair
every Porsche Parade is very well organized and follows a proven agenda of the major activities. This leads to a reassuring feeling you will have a great time regardless of location. yet changing destinations each year ensures each Parade is also very different based on the topography, scenery, nearby attractions and the actual site where the event is hosted. For Karen and I the things we remember about each Parade start with the friends we share the experiences with followed by events related to the differing locations. Having said that, the things at the top of the memory list for this Parade include sharing experiences with First Settlers members, and other PCA friends we’ve made over the years, in a region of the country I’ve traversed multiple times but never paused to experience what the area had to offer.
The 2015 PCA Parade in French lick, Indiana, was my second in two years, and the venue was likely one of the best PCA has ever had according to many long time PCA members who have attended many parades over the years. It was great seeing many FSR members this year and congratulations to those FSR members who received honors for their participation! I have the privilege of serving PCA members as the National Drivers education Chair. In 2014, I mentored under Pete Tremper, the National De Chair since 2001, and I took over for Pete beginning 2015. I serve along with the other Committee Chairs and zone Reps on the National Board. PCA has two board meetings every year. There is a Winter Board Meeting which was held in Columbia MD in February, and the summer board meeting is always held at the beginning of the PCA Parade. This year, I arrived on Saturday before the Sunday registration. I was invited to speak to the zone Reps at one of their meetings on Sunday morning, and the primary Board of Directors meeting was held Sunday afternoon at 2 PM. At these BoD meetings, the executive Council makes their remarks, and all committee chairs make a quick presentation as well.
The Parade site itself was one of the major highlights of the trip. When French lick, Indiana was announced as the Parade location I remember everyone asking, “what is in French lick”? other than basketball fans knowing it was the home of larry Bird everyone looked it up on the Internet out of curiosity if nothing else. After I read the history of the French lick resort, and it’s neighbor the West Baden resort, I started recalling stories I’d heard from my dad who grew up just a couple of hours north. It turned out the resorts date back to around the turn of the 20th century and were in their heyday when my dad was growing up. Staying at the resorts, refurbished to their previous grandeur, and experiencing their early 1900s atmosphere along with touring great venues nearby like Churchill Downs (home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875) and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (opened in 1909) transported Parade participants back to a bygone era. In particular I developed a better connection to the stories my dad told of growing up in the Great Gatsby era since he talked of going to the races at Indy when Deusenberg’s ruled the day and of other famous cars made in Indiana during that time such as Auburn and Cord. Besides the hidden treasures of the resorts themselves, where Parade attendees enjoyed great accommodations and banquets, many First Settlers members remained transported to the past by relaxing at the end of each day on the massive front porch listening to the Ragtime Band. As a matter of fact, Karen and I were so transported to the past we didn’t even turn on the TV the entire week.

one thing that is for certain at the Porsche Parade is that there will be a surprise. Around each corner, in the next parking garage or adjacent table there will be someone or some Porsche that would be otherwise unexpected. Here are three: The big news for early Porsche 911 fans was that Weldon Scrogham would enter his 1965 911 in Concours competition. Weldon purchased this 911 new as a very young man in 1965. This is an original paint, flawless example of a very early 911. The Scrogham family did a top professional job in the display of this celebrated 911. This wonderful red coupe is #301175 and is the first Porsche 911 sold in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Getting back to Porsches, the most memorable driving we enjoyed in Karen’s Macan S was on the twisty and hilly roads through the woods on the ohio River tour (led by Wolfgang Porsche) and on a few laps around the course at Indy. We also tested the Macan’s comfort and handling with four adults when Pam and George Michaels rode with us on those two tours. It was a great experience enjoying Porsche driving with four people in the car (I can say this because I was driving…you will have to ask the passengers if they agree). Also, as noted by the 911 behind us on the river tour, the Macan S can hold its own amongst the two seater Porsches!
JUNE 21-27, 2015
(“Dr. Porsche autographing George Michaels concours trophy”)
By Mark Hugel The 60th Porsche Parade was the second Parade for luana and me. After running ourselves to exhaustion in Traverse City, MI two years ago, we vowed to book ourselves for a more leisurely experience at French lick – and we had a grand time without overdoing the pace. our most fun events were both at the track – one at a famous horse track and the other at a famous car track.
Next year, PCA will have their Parade on the east Coast at Jay Peak, VT. I will be attending, and I expect to drive my 1996 Targa for the concourse. I am sure I will be asking the award winning George Michaels for his input of these events! For the many members who have not attended a Parade, I suggest you consider Parade next year. There is something for all family members over the full week of events. you can attend all or part of the event as time permits. There are awards banquets, tours and excursions, fun runs, concourse vehicles that are amazing to see, autocross events, gimmick rally, T&D (Timing & Distance) Rally for the serious minded, Goodie Store, and many other events. The volunteers are amazing, and the time and planning that goes into these events is something to see.
After participating in the first two days of Parade events, we left Tuesday open to “explore” on our own and decided to take a trip south from French lick to louisville, Ky for our first-ever visit to Churchill Downs. As luck would have it, when we arrived at the (horse) track with no planning done ahead of time, we were invited to join both a walking tour of the paddock and track areas, and an escorted tour to the “backside” of the track – the stables area and facilities where the folks tending the horses are housed. A very interesting visit made even more so as this was American Pharoah’s triple crown year and the horse did all of his triple crown training at Churchill Downs, becoming the darling of the track.
PCA National is in charge of much of the planning as Parade has grown so much over the years. I met Dr. Wolfgang Porsche Monday morning at the West Baden Hotel where I stayed. As you can see, I am sure he was very impressed to be able to tell his family he met the PCA National De Chair!!!!
I was on my way to the concours banquet on Tuesday night and shared an elevator ride with Gene and Jan from central Wisconsin. out in the parking lot, we saw that we had also shared adjacent parking spots and I complimented him on his black 1965 Porsche 356C Coupe. He said that just last month, he had celebrated the 50th anniversary of traveling to the Porsche Factory to purchase this gleaming coupe. He is the original and only owner.
The next day, we rejoined the planned events of Parade and headed to Indianapolis with another 149 Porsches to visit the home of the Indy 500, Brickyard 400 and Indianapolis Grand Prix. luana and I had visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway before, but on this Parade fun run, we not only visited the track and the track museum, but lined up for our trip around the 2.5 mile oval in our C4S cabriolet. When the time came to head onto the track, we dropped the top and joined in the middle of a line of about 50 cars. employing our best “charity lap” strategy, we motored for a while in line at 35 to 60 MPH, and then laid back a bit from the car directly ahead so we could stand on the gas and run through second and third gears to near the red line. 90 MPH through turn one and waving to the folks in the grandstand was a hoot, but then it was time to mash the brakes and settle back in line (at least until we got to the other end of the track and ready to enter turn three!) The NASCAR guys marvel at how smooth the track is, and so did we.
At the concours banquet, I was honored to be seated at the First Settlers table, right next to Jerry & Patricia Coffman of yorktown, VA. The Coffmans had a 1973 Porsche 911T at the Parade. I had not previously met the Coffmans, but enjoyed meeting fellow 1973 911 owners over 700 miles from home who live in nearby yorktown. Jerry said that he purchased his 911T new at the Porsche Factory. I think I have spotted a trend.
Visiting Parade at a slower pace is definitely the way to go, and the resort hotel atmosphere further contributed to slowing us down – evenings on the broad front porch, listening to the New orleans jazz band (who would have guessed New orleans jazz at a heart of the Midwest hotel?) and watching the lightening peal across the night sky made for a relaxing and fun time with old and new friends. on to Jay Peak, VT in 2016!

The PCA De Program is designed so the participant can improve his or her driving abilities and acquire a better understanding of vehicle dynamics and driving safety at various tracks around the country.

of time to get to know the course, neither of us had been on it before and by that first initial passing, we never passed each other again (based on our in-car cameras).
He’s in the “I can’t count how many De’s I’ve been to” club and great guy to have on your team. “I’ve been a fan of sports car racing since I was a kid. I had a subscription to “Car & Driver” magazine when they celebrated their 20th Anniversary and I just read their 60th Anniversary issue. I’ve watched lots of car races from the sidelines and toyed with the idea of joining SCCA since I first got my driver’s license but always found a reason to not go racing. That was until now when I had the opportunity to go Chump Car racing with Team Constitutionalists Racing. But does it count as checking off a Bucket list item if you want to do it again?
our time at Summit Point was amazing. We started the first stint together (I was in front initially) and I quickly let him get around me so that I had a lead I wanted to follow; you know, one of those guys who can hold his line and hit the apex where he’s supposed to and still make good time? Well, apparently it took us approximately the same amount

What is your favorite personal car-related story? Back in the days when I was young and foolish, and I would drive way too fast, I got all four wheels off of the ground while driving on a hilly road in my 1961 Ford.
If you have
not
already
done
so
I
would
also
invite
you
to

our
page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Firstsettlers/ to receive updates, share stories, ask questions and share pictures of your Porsche(s). Take the time to be thankful for all you have and for good health, be safe,
Jason HoRIzoNTAlly oPPoSeD
