From the President Doug Worrall spring has sprung and summer is upon us. We’ve been a busy group this spring with loads of activities which you’ll read about and see pictures of in this edition of Horizontally opposed. We had a tech session at dirty details in Virginia Beach after our april breakfast meeting at Pop’s diner. our Membership Chairman, Ken thomas’ beautiful 993 Carrera was the spotlight car. then, at the end of april we joined forces with the BMW Club and held a multi-marque Bar-B-Q on a beautiful saturday with a beautiful assortment of automobiles parked all around the property. then May saw us gather at the beautiful Portsmouth waterfront home of Mark and Luanna Hugel for our annual spring Charity event. Porsches and Pinatas was the theme as the date was Cinco de FSR President Doug Worrall Mayo. thank you to Josie grandfield and her Habitat for Heroes Charity Committee. these folks have worked selflessly and tirelessly to reach our goal of raising $50,000 to begin the process of delivering a house to a veteran through Habitat for Humanity. thank you to all of our members who have donated so generously to make this possible! you may be getting this newsletter just in time to serve as a reminder to join us on another ed Merry designed Fun Run May 19th. if it’s already happened, i hope you took the opportunity to join us on a beautiful drive from Chickahominy River Park to Mechanicsville for a nice italian meal at Roma’s. We’ll also be hosting a 3 day High Performance driver’s education event on the “Full Course” at Virginia international Raceway on May 25, 26, and 27. if you’ve heard people talking about HPde or de’s, this is what they’re talking about! We get to drive our cars at speed around the track under controlled conditions. discovering some of the awesome capabilities of these machines at the track, translates to making us better drivers on the street. then moving into June, our neighboring PCa Region, shenandoah is holding their annual RPM(Richmond Porsche Meet) with many activities including a concours and an autocross. this all takes place the weekend of June 2nd. also in June, our very own Phil grandfield will be the PCa zone 2 Club Race Chair. Head out to ViR on the weekend of June 22nd. Be a spectator and watch some very competitive Porsches racing door handle to door handle. Phil is always looking for volunteers to help over the weekend also. or if you’re an advanced solo driver, there is a de happening in between racing heats. Some other events happening further out in the summer are: Porsche Parade at Lake of the Ozarks, MO July 8-14 New Member Social at Jerry & Kathy Kent’s July 21 Weather Tech Race at VIR August 17-19 Western area Fun Run September 8 Classics on the Green September 16 information on these events can be found at fsrpca.org or at fsrpca.motorsportreg.com as it becomes available. of course, our monthly breakfasts are a great place to see beautiful cars, have great conversation, and hear all of the latest news about the club. Join us the first saturday of every month in Williamsburg. or come on out the second saturday of every month in Richmond or Chesapeake. Come join us at any event you choose. you’ll have fun and meet some really nice folks. and that’s because……”it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” Keep the shiny side up!

the weather begrudgingly gave us a beautiful day on March 10th. after the eastern area breakfast 41 members took a short drive to dirty details facility in Virginia Beach. Many FsR members know dirty details from their sponsorship of air & auto; some members have even availed themselves of their services. Joe Mcgrath started dirty details about 10 years ago as a wash and wax operation. He soon foresaw the need for a true “high end” detail shop in the area and has developed a loyal customer base of owners of enthusiast automobiles. in fact, our own Ken thomas is a repeat customer and his beautiful 993 was in the shop for a “touch up” after three years.

Chesapeake Breakfast:

Joe discussed the differences between the various products and Mike & Maria Podosky processes involved. one tidbit i found interesting; Joe works with the shop dark. the only lighting comes from a set of lights mounted Scott Hoffman and Jim Ortiz chit chatting before breakfast on a headstrap, sometimes supplementing that with lights mounted on his workstation. Joe feels this gives him a perfect environment to see flaws that need correction. another observation i found refreshing after watching youtube videos by the various celebrity detailers; Joe feels that some of the tools and techniques are overkill. Looking at his work on Ken’s car i am convinced he has a point – he gets beautiful results without heroics. after the event i received positive comments from several attendees, so we’ll try to have another winter tech event next year.

First Settlers Region Members Attend “Helmets Off to Heroes” Veterans’ Day Event - by Scott Hoffman

typically exceed 100 miles per hour on a busy race track. this year’s edition of Helmets off to Heroes was another fun event for me as a volunteer corner worker. When i arrived in the summit Point Jefferson Circuit paddock i was met by a few other volunteers in the 16 degree weather and we all joked about times past when we had worked racing events in much worse weather. thankfully, although cold, it was clear meaning that the sun would help warm up the track a bit to provide necessary tire grip but the air temperature that day never made it too much above freezing.

this past Veterans’ day, a couple of FsR members attended an event that provides veterans and current active duty military members a day to drive on a race track while learning high performance driving skills necessary not only on a race track but also making for safer drivers on our public roads and highways.

Veteran and active duty driving participants in this annual event have represented all ranks from the lowest enlisted grades with no prior race track driving experience to an instructor that is a current Vice admiral in the United states Coast guard and is an avid racer. Kurt Mittman, First settlers Region member and regular HPde participant at our ViR events attended this year. Kurt is a UsaF veteran now working as a dod civilian at the Pentagon. Kurt drove his beautiful 993 Carrera and had a great day despite the cold temperatures.

every Veterans’ day since 2011, Miriam schottland, owner of a Washington dC based driving school but more importantly a long time High Performance driver education (HPde) instructor for numerous auto enthusiast clubs in the Washington dC metropolitan area, has organized the “Helmets off to Heroes” event. Miriam, a UsaF veteran from the Viet nam era wanted to reward veterans and active duty by providing a free event for veterans to do something most have always just dreamed about—to drive their cars fast on a racetrack.

there was a variety of representation of all the services, numerous different brands of cars, and by age of the drivers. the oldest driver was an 82 year old navy veteran and his car also happened to be the oldest at this event—a meticulously restored and maintained 1962 Porsche 356. although he had some experience driving this car on autocross courses, this was his and his car’s first time driving at speed on a race track and although having the lowest horsepower of any car he did extremely well and was passing other’s cars by the end of the day.

since the “Helmets off to Heroes” event began on Veterans’ day 2011, Miriam has relied on the generosity of sponsors as well as volunteers in the Washington dC metropolitan area to host this complex the most noteworthy driver at the event was event. the main sponsor of this event is a named Corey. Corey had only intended to northern Virginia car dealer named don watch a friend of his that was registered to Beyer whom also happens to be a Us drive but his friend canceled at the last Congressman representing Virginia’s 8th minute and didn’t show up. Corey attended Congressional district. My own employer, Event organizer, Miriam Schottland, hosting the post-event drivers’ awards as a spectator and watched the morning ceremony national technologies associates sessions while the other drivers were learning incorporated, a Virginia based company with an 80 percent veteran car control exercises on a wet skid pad as well as on a challenging set workforce, and other sponsors ensure all expenses including the high of cone courses laid out along the length of the Jefferson Circuit. price of renting the summit Point Jefferson Circuit, necessary fire and someone noticed Corey watching and asked if he’d also like to drive. rescue services, event insurance, participant lunches, and event driver Because his friend was not driving there just happened to be an and volunteer t-shirts are covered making this a free event for all the available instructor that could teach Corey for the remainder of the day. driving participants. Corey agreed and was noticeably nervous at first but drove very well. the interesting and very conspicuous detail about Corey was that he the volunteer corner workers at this event are experienced sCCa was missing both hands and parts of his arms due to a combat injury. Washington dC region race flaggers and most of us volunteers like Corey was wearing two prosthetic arms that could connect to his BMW’s myself are also veterans. our function is to watch steering wheel. i asked his instructor later about the drivers from the numerous corners and keep the experience, and he said that Corey was a them safe by communicating potential hazards terrific student that learned the fundamentals by displaying various colored flags having quick and had a great time. some unknown but specific meanings to the drivers. the HPde wise person has been quoted often by stating “it’s instructors all came from local clubs that typically better to be a racer for a day then a spectator for host their own HPde events including the PCa, life”. Corey became a racer on Veterans’ day sCCa, BMW Car Club of america, america, audi 2017 and no doubt will have even more thrilling Club, Ferrari Club, etc. these volunteer days ahead on this and other race tracks. instructors sit in the passenger seat of drivers’ cars and instruct them on the proper way to drive Being a member of PCa First settlers Region you at speed on a road course race track. these are likely to be a veteran or know some as we HPde instructors typically use an electronic An 82 year old Navy veteran performing final checks on his make up large percentage of FsR’s membership. 1962 Porsche 356 prior to Tech Inspection communicator device with headset and next november, consider attending, volunteering, microphone attachments situated under the instructor’s and drivers’ or donating at a Veteran’s day event similar to “Helmets off to Heroes” racing helmets to provide guidance on proper braking, turn-in at a and if you don’t mind making the drive please join me next year at corner, apex, track out and proper passing techniques. the instructors summit Point Motorsports Park in nearby West Virginia and discover also provide instruction on maintaining proper situational awareness what the excitement is all about. i hope to see you at 2018 edition of and long-range vision as things do happen very quickly when speeds “Helmets off to Heroes”. Annual Spring Charity Event: Porsches and Piñatas

Our 2018 FSR Charity Event Porsches and Piñatas! Cruisin’ for a Cause!

John and Ruthie Lee

submitted by Josie & Phil grandfield

the weather forecast leading up to saturday, May 5th was threatening for nearly two weeks before the charity event but the rains held off and we had perfect weather to Cruise for a Cause. the fun run allowed wind-in-the-hair top down cruising on the way to the Porsches and Pinatas party at Mark & Luana’s beautiful waterfront home in Portsmouth. the party included live music, piñata smashing, great food and another competitive silent auction. the whole day was lots of fun! thanks to everyone who attended to support our Habitat for Heroes campaign and getting us very close to meeting our goal! a special thanks to the Hugels’s for opening their new home and making everyone feel welcome. Jenny Kay tearing down the Piñata

after our FUn RUn, (see the article on the right), we drove to Mark & Luana's beautiful home in Portsmouth. in the meantime, other volunteers were working hard at the Hugel’s home to prepare for the party. the kitchen was prepped for the caterers from La tolteca Mexican restaurant in Portsmouth. the atmosphere was made festive with sombreros, Mexican-style rubber-duckies but most of all were the fantastic flower arrangements made by Luana Hugel. they were stunning and some lucky members got to bring them home as door prizes! thanks to the band Blue trigger from air & auto Classic Car show fame for again donating their time to entertain the First settlers Region and support a great cause. it would not be a party without them!

Our valet parking attendent, Jacob Kay

the silent auction featured some exceptional deals and our members were again very generous with donations. another shout-out goes to Kathy thomas and Marco estrada for setting up the on-line auction on the First settlers website. this unique feature allowed people who could not attend the party to donate to the cause and take advantage of the deals. and some of the winners were ‘on-line only’ bidders. Well done! it just so happened that the Kentucky derby was the same day and plans were made to watch “the Most exciting two-Minutes in sport” on tV. then Mike Ball came up with a great, innovative idea to turn the world’s most famous horserace into another fun, competitive, 50-50 fund-raising event. He put the numbers of each of the horses into a hat with a $50 buy-in to the derby pool. Money was collected, numbers were drawn, and we all rooted loudly for ‘our’ horse! as it turned out, no one picked the winning number but we had a blast raising another $750 for Habitat for Heroes.

Mark Hugel getting the fire pit started

it was another great event! gulf-Porsche logoed pedal car test drives in the driveway, pinata smashing along the river, great music from Blue trigger, excellent Mexican food, free flowing margaritas, wonderful scenery and fantastic friends! thanks to everyone for making it wonderful party and successful fund raising event! Annual Spring Charity Event: Porsches and Piñatas SPRING 2018 CHARITy FuN RuN to begin our Charity Event a note from our Fun Run guru, ed Merry

Ed Merry

Josie Grandfield, Charity Coordinator, figuring out the Silent Auction

May 5, 2018 was truly wonderful. it began with an 80 mile, 2 hour fun run starting at Windsor, Va and ending at the Hugel’s beautiful home on the water in Portsmouth, Va. Why ? First it was wonderful to help others, in this case Habitat for Humanity. second it was wonderful since the predicted rain did not happen. third it was wonderful to get together with such friendly Porsche enthusiasts. at least 37 drove the route. Finally it was wonderful for the 21 cars driven along lightly- traveled, twisty back country roads. ed Merry’s reputation as the “twisty road” meister remains intact. But such a wonderful day cannot be done alone. thanks go to Mark and Luana Hugel for opening they home to us. thanks go to george and Vince with the administration. thanks go to Bret and Melinda for being the sweepers, who had nothing to sweep up. next thanks go to Jeb and Buddy Blair, dave and Karen McFadden and Jim Mccormack for leading groups. thanks to the folks at Benn’s United Methodist Church who opened their facility for a much needed break. Finally thanks to Lee and Brenda for helping set up this fun run. i truly believe driving a Porsche is what really sells the car. drive safe, ed

WELCOME!

How is it going???? submitted by: Mark Hugel our Charity Project............... Habitat for Heroes..........Build a House for a Veteran We are getting there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One Silent Auction Item, Arrive & Drive at Oct FSR DE at VIR. Donated by LMN Motorsports

the folks at Habitat have described the process to us as similar to solving a Rubic’s Cube puzzle. Four things need to come together at the same time: a qualified veteran family, a home to build or renovate in the location the family would like to live, the money to build or renovate donated by us to sponsor the build and the matching funds coming from the government subsidy. at this point, Habitat has found a qualified veteran family who would like to live in Chesapeake, Habitat is currently searching for the house to renovate in the area the family would like to live, we have raised over $47,000 and have pledges committed for $5,000 more and the city of Chesapeake has offered the remainder of necessary funding if the house is in Chesapeake. so... when the right house is found in Chesapeake, the Rubic’s Cube comes together and Habitat purchases the house. after that, build or renovation plans are drawn up, building permit is requested and materials are purchased. From a timing perspective we hope that all goes smoothly, which would allow construction to start around this september. When we get to the construction phase, we will have opportunities to volunteer our time at the construction site and our volunteers will be guided by construction supervisors from Habitat. Habitat coordinates all the volunteer labor - ours and other folks who volunteer their time to Habitat projects.

THANK yOu TO ALL OF OuR WONDERFuL

of course, all this is the result of our generous club members and corporate sponsors. Checkered Flag Porsche has been a key sponsor of club activities and this effort has been no exception. thank you, everyone!! HoRizontaLLy oPPosed

Museum. the build required a collaboration with the tucker family to obtain access to any information available on Preston tucker’s original concept and vision. sean tucker, grandson of Preston tucker and an automotive engineer, is also contributing to the build. the torpedo replica will feature many of Preston tucker’s ideas that were years ahead of their time such as dymanic headlights that moved with steering and a center seat position for the driver. the project is expected to be complete in a year with four years already invested.

by Melinda Cagle February marks my anniversary with the Porsche Club of america. What better way to kick off my fourth year than with a trip to easton, Pa to attend tech tactics. the day is dedicated to Porsche technical information with a few special treats. Bret and i attended our first in 2016 and knew the fun that awaited us. With snow in the forecast, we loaded up the Macan with winter gear and headed north.

next, Bret and i headed to a presentation by derrick dong of Performance Friction Corporation (PFC) Brakes. derrick explained how PFC became the supplier for Porsche Motorsport. the short story is they were the only provider to demonstrate on a dyno that their brakes could successfully slow a vehicle from 190mph to 60mph 600 times. yes, there were some pad replacements required but the brakes themselves performed flawlessly. derrick also went over terminology, performance requirements for track versus road use, and braking tips and techniques for cars equipped with aBs. Modern aBs systems learn just as the PdK. For example, repeated stabbing of the brake can bring on a condition referred to as “ice pedal.”

the event was held February 17 and 18 at the Porsche north america training facility. each day long session is limited to 125 participants. i registered us as soon as possible because the event sells out quickly. the venue provided a unique opportunity to learn about some of Porsche’s newest models. this year the 991.2 gt3, both standard and touring, were featured. a 911 turbo s and Panamera Hybrid were also on display. For those with a passion for the older models, experts in restoration provided a wealth of information.

The 2018 991.2 GT3 in Guards Red

the day began at 8:00am with registration and signing the waiver. in addition to the cars, there were teaching aides to explore. need Porsche parts and accessories? the training facility is adjacent a Porsche warehouse! Participants received a 10% discount on all

John Budinich of Michelin discussed tire tips and technology. Michelin is celebrating 50 years of successful partnership with Porsche. John began by reminding us of the importance of tires. it all comes down to four contact patches that link the car with the road. John touched on street versus track tips for optimum performance. as many Porsches are delivered with summer times, John explained the problems caused by cold temperatures. Michelin defined “cold” as below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or on snow and ice. at 20 degrees, the tires may develop surface cracks when flexed. Many owners own a winter or all season set of tires. John touched on considerations for storing tires both on and off the rim. For those who store their car during the winter, John recommended inflating tires to their maximum pressure and parking on wooden blocks to reduce flat spots.

orders with pickup by the end of the session.

another issue Porsche owners with “garage queens” experience is old tires. tire performance is impacted after five years. ten years is considered end-of-life. all tires have a four digit date code on the sidewall signifying the week and year the tire was manufactured. to inspect your own, look for the last four digits of the dot code. My Macan has 3214 meaning Michelin manufactured them during the 32nd week of 2014.

A car on the lift with aero panels removed is always a hit. 2018 GT3 Touring in GT Silver

Rob ida of Rob ida Concepts provided the opening plenary. Rob brings together three generations of family experience to build custom cars for private collections as well as race cars. Rob explained, “When it comes to Porsche (restorations), less is more.” His family’s shop specializes in restoring damaged sheet metal without the use of welding or fillers. He showed examples of the painstaking process of shrinking metal and stretching it back out to the original shape. the process takes months but the finished product will pass the most demanding concours judge. Rob also presented the tucker torpedo project. Rob’s grandfather sold tuckers before the company failed. More recently, the company specialized in tucker 48 replicas. a customer requested a torpedo which never existed beyond a ¼ scale clay model now at the Peterson

What will the future hold for tires and wheels? Wheels that flex to reduce damage while still looking stylish will be hitting the market soon. Fifteen years out, additive manufacturing will allow customers to “print” new tread patterns based on the season or expected driving conditions. (Continued on page 11)

Feb 17, 2018 Fun Run

(Continued from page 10)

Pedro Bonilla, owner of Pedro’s garage, gave a tutorial on finding more horsepower by reducing losses inherent to the stock configuration. Pedro presented his case for under driving accessories to gain 6-10hp. the alternator, power steering, air conditioner, and water pump are power parasites. other tips include improving air flow. Pedro has tried all of these on his Boxster. He reports the difference is noticeable. the training center is also adjacent to one of three Porsche parts warehouses in north america. the 103,000 square foot facility opened in 2009 and serves the north eastern Us and Canada. Currently there are 28,000 different parts valued at $10-12M for more modern Porsche models. they can ship 2,000-3,000 parts each day. the facility has the capability of expanding another 75,000 square feet to keep up with Porsche’s growing customer base.

Why Have a Valentine day Fun Run? Winter is cold, the weather is unpredictable. Why? Perhaps some Porsche owners are tired of being cooped up looking at the weather? Perhaps they are bored with no worthy entertainment? Perhaps they are tired of looking at their car snuggled under a car cover in the garage and really want to drive it again? Perhaps they are beginning to feel Cabin Fever coming on? Perhaps they want to enjoy the warm friendliness of FsR gatherings? Perhaps it is these reasons plus several more. anyway, 24 Porsches and 40 Porsche enthusiasts met on saturday, 17 February, in Windsor, Virginia and drove over 50 miles of mostly twisty back roads to smithfield station Restaurant. although cold and cloudy, there was no snow, ice or rain. Hooray!! so we all enjoyed a worthy Valentine’s day Fun Run.

the event ended with sWag! We each received a nice poster, t-shirt, and information on the 911t and gt2 Rs. there were giveaways, too. i feel like i came away a more informed customer of products and services. Meeting other Porsche enthusiasts, catching Bret was hoping this GT3 was part of the raffle. up with friends from other Picture credit: Melinda Cagle regions, and driving through beautiful scenery made for a great weekend.

a special thanks to Jim Hamel and Jim McCormack for driving the route in advance and then leading groups during the run itself. thanks to george Michaels for setting up the web-site registration. another special thanks to Ron Pack, owner, and the folks at smithfield station for providing delicious food, excellent service and a wonderful meeting location at the end. We also enjoyed Ron’s red 911 cabriolet. sadly for most of us, the weather was still too cold for top down driving. We remembered that it was still February. – ed & Brenda Merry & Lee eason.

25 Things you Didn't Know About Porsche By aaRon MiLLeR

Published on 10/30/2014 from www.thrilllist.com

names in the automotive world are as Few synonymous with performance as Porsche. and chances are you know the company has won more races around the world than any other. But did you know that the legendary 911 was very nearly the 901? or that Porsche once designed a tractor specifically for coffee farming? or that Ferdinand Porsche developed a four-wheel drive Formula one car in the early 1950s? thought so. 1. Ferdinand Porsche, the eponymous founder of the company, made the world’s first hybrid electric vehicle…in 1899. the LohnerPorsche “semper Vivus” was essentially an electric car with an internal combustion motor used as a generator. it was also the first car with brakes on all four wheels. 2. He was also one of the very first to prove that smaller cars could be faster in a race than larger, more powerful vehicles. He developed “sascha” for austro-daimler at the request of a rich filmmaker named...sascha. it was significantly smaller than its competition, yet still won 43 races, including the legendary targa Florio in 1922. 3. Later, he designed the legendary Auto union grand prix cars that dominated the world. the auto Union P (for Porsche) featured a (then revolutionary) mid-mounted 16 cylinder engine. With drivers like Hans stuck and tazio nuvolari—two of the best of their generation—behind the wheel, it was virtually unbeatable. 4. The very first VW Beetle was built in Ferdinand’s private villa. not a bad place.

seatmakers. Reutter Carrosserie Werke manufactured car bodies and interiors, and contracted with Porsche to make the 356 bodies. By the early 1960s, Porsche bought the body-making part of the company, and the rest of the company changed its name to Recaro. 12. The Porsche 911, one of the most iconic names in all of motoring, was almost the Porsche 901. Peugeot made them stop, as traditional Peugeot nomenclature is to number-0-number, like 205. 13. In some respects, the Porsche 917 from the early 1970s could obliterate today’s race cars. depending on the series it was running in, it could have over 1,100 hp, and hit 240 mph. 14. And the first 25 917 racecars were called “secretary cars," because they were actually built by secretaries. Pretty much anyone with a pulse helped assemble them at the last second so there would be enough examples to satisfy Fia inspectors, thereby making the car legal to race. 15. In 1972, Porsche Design developed the world’s first black chronograph watch. it was all about functionality, so the face mimicked the gauges in a car. it also happened to be stunning. 16. They kinda kicked butt the first time F1 allowed turbos. a trio of world championships with McLaren were the direct result of a 1.5 liter V6 that put out over 1000 hp. not too shabby in 1984…or 2014, really. 17. Porsche racecars have won roughly 24,000 races across the globe. no one can top that. Period.

5. Ferdinand designed the Mercedes-Benz type 80 to be the fastest car on Earth. in 1939, the car’s projected top speed of 470 mph would’ve obliterated the land speed record. Certain global events meant it never got the chance to make a record run. the 470 mph mark wasn’t approached until a quarter century later. 6. Ferdinand Porsche developed a four wheel-drive Formula One car. the Porsche 360 Cisitalia had 385 hp and could top 200 mph, but because of the owner’s lack of funding and a change to the rules, it never actually raced. 7. The prancing horse on the Porsche Crest is similar to the horse on the Ferrari Crest. For Porsche, it makes sense: it’s actually integral to the coat of arms for the city of stuttgart, Porsche’s home. Ferrari only uses it because an italian fighter ace shot down a pilot over stuttgart in WWi, and the ace’s mother told Ferrari to use the horse as good luck. 8. The very first road going sports car made by Porsche was midengined. everyone thinks of the Porsche 356 as a rear-engined car— and most were—but the first prototype, 356/1, had the engine behind the driver but in front of the rear axle for better balance. it also won its very first race, a hillclimb event in innsbruck. 9. For two years, all 356 models were built in an old sawmill in Gmund, austria. they were also better, since they were made with aluminum bodies instead of the steel bodies the later german cars had, and were thus much lighter. 10. The Dutch Police used to drive the Porsche 356. Porsche built 10 of them a full year after production had officially stopped, just for the dutch. Rumor has it that the one you’re looking at belongs to one Jerry seinfeld. 11. Most early Porsche automobiles were actually made with bodies by Recaro, which you know as one of the world’s premier HoRizontaLLy oPPosed

18. Porsche designed tractors. Porsche has a more fascinating tractor history than even Lamborghini. they even made a gasolinepowered tractor specifically for coffee farmers, so diesel fumes wouldn’t impact the flavor. 19. …and it designs some of the best forklifts in the world. since the early '80s, Porsche has continuously won awards for their designs of Linde Material Handling’s forklifts. yeah. 20. Ever flown in an Airbus A300? Porsche Design did the cockpit. among the many advances were digital screens for the pilots instead of analog readouts. 21. The 959 was the most technologically advanced supercar of its generation. the nearly 200 mph all wheel-drive supercar wasn’t just one of (if not the) very best cars of the 1980s, it won its class at the grueling 24 hours of Le Mans… 22. And the 959 also won the Paris Dakar rally, pretty much the toughest race on Earth. seriously. over some of the world’s harshest terrain, this car dominated a bunch of race-prepped trucks. Let’s see any of today’s supercars do that. 23. The 1986 Porsche 944 was the first car sold in the united States with a passenger airbag as standard equipment. this was at a time when most companies even charged you extra just to have an airbag in the steering wheel. 24. Harley Davidson uses Porsche engines in some of their bikes. the Harley V-Rod features an advanced, 60 degree, double overhead cam engine that was developed specially for Harley’s racing division… by Porsche. 25. Porsche designed a grill. of course. Why wouldn’t it? FiRst settLeRs Region

The 993 - The Last Air-Cooled Models submitted by Ken thomas, 933 owner

the 911 with the internal design number 993 remains the one true love of many a Porsche driver. the remarkably pleasing design has much to do with this. the integrated bumpers underscore the smooth elegance of its styling. the front section is lower-slung than on the earlier models, made possible by a switch from round to polyellipsoid headlights. the 993 quickly gained a reputation for exceptional dependability and reliability. it was also agile, as the first 911 with a newly designed aluminum 1995 Porsche 993 chassis. the turbo version was the first to have a bi-turbo engine, giving it the lowest-emission stock automotive powertrain in the world in 1995. the hollowspoke aluminum wheels, never before used on any car, were yet another innovation of the all-wheel drive turbo version. the Porsche 911 gt2 was aimed at the sports car purist who cherished the thrill of high speeds. an electric glass roof that slid under the rear window was one of the innovations of the 911 targa. But the real reason dyed-in-the-wool Porsche enthusiasts still revere the 993 is that this model, produced from 1993 to 1998, was the last 911 with an air-cooled engine. there are 29 993’s owners in First settlers Region.
