From the President Doug Worrall i’m sure you’ve heard it said. “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Well that saying sure applies to the First Settler’s Board of directors for 2018. you re-elected the same slate of officers from 2017. if you’re new to the club, or need a refresher, here’s the list. The six elected positions are: President; doug Worrall, eastern Vice President; Melinda Cagle, Western Vice President; Kevin Clark, Secretary; ed Merry, Treasurer; John Schwaebler, and Activities officer; Vince Canepa. Add to that group our Past President; Jason Horner, and you have our executive Council.
FSR President Doug Worrall
Then we have lots of appointed Board of directors Chair positions that will be voted on in our first meeting of 2018. These are all the folks that make all the fun you are having possible. These men and women are all volunteers, and i can unequivocally tell you that there isn’t a better group in PCA! Volunteer to help out at an activity this year; you’ll have fun and you’ll find out what i’m talking about! Between the weather and the road conditions, January and February tend to be slow months for seeing Porsches out and about. Cayenne’s, Macan’s, and other all wheel drive iterations make bad conditions a little easier to handle. Here’s to hoping for good weather for all of our three monthly breakfast gatherings. We meet in Williamsburg the first Monday of every month. The second Saturday of each month we meet in richmond and Chesapeake. We do have a Fun run scheduled for February 17th. it’s close enough to the 14th to call it a Valentine’s Fun run. So bring your sweetheart and join us on a drive from Windsor to Smithfield Station for lunch. ed Merry has put together a new exciting route for us. if you want to head to warmer climes, Werks reunion @Amelia island starts on March 9th. This is a Porsche-centric event coordinated around the time of the famous Concours. if you’re looking to turn up the heat at the track, the zone 2 de at Vir is March 16, 17, and 18. Although by the time you read this the run groups will most likely be full as this event usually sells out quickly. March will also bring the chance to help out one of our charities, Horizons of Hampton roads. We’ll have an outing to Top Golf in Virginia Beach with proceeds going to Horizons. look for details to follow in an email and at our breakfast meetings. And while we’re on the subject of charities, FSr has launched an initiative to build a house for Habitat For Heroes in 2018. The home will go to a deserving veteran. i can’t think of a more worthy or appropriate cause for our club as a public service to our area! So here’s to 2018! So if you haven’t been to an event, come out and join us. i can assure you that you’ll have fun because….. it’s not just the cars, it’s the people! Keep the shiny side up!

Treffen Asheville by Phil Grandfield
The ladies enjoying their Porsches in front of Biltmore Photo credit: Phil Grandfield
The english translation of the German word ‘treffen’ is ‘meeting’; and the recent PCA sponsored Treffen event in Asheville was quite a meeting. Twenty-six First Settlers members made the trip in late September to enjoy some fall foliage and a gathering of 300 Porsches at the historic Grove Park inn. it was a great time and i see more Treffen’s in our future! Begun in 2005, and formerly known as Porsche escape, this nationally sponsored event has grown in interest and is called Treffen North America. it is intended as a shortened, noncompetitive version of Porsche Parade. The locations are intended as a geographical alternative to Parade and usually on the ‘opposite coast’. Because the registration is limited and doesn’t require facilities for a Concours and autocross Treffen’s are able to fit into smaller venues to include the historic Grove Park inn in Ashville. But more about that later. The first escape was held in the Wine County of Santa rosa CA. other locations have included the Finger lakes Ny, Baltimore, Albuquerque, dayton, Sun Peaks British Columbia, Flagstaff, eureka Springs, los Angeles, orlando, and rapid City. The first Treffen was in 2016 at lake Mark & Luana Hugel and Jim & Diane Tahoe. 2017 doubled the fun with the first event in the Texas Hill Country and the second closer Liebman enjoying Treffen. Photo to home in North Carolina. The 2018 events are scheduled at the Tamaya resort in Santa Ana credit: Phil Grandfield Pueblos, NM on April 25-29th and the Fairmont Banff Springs resort September 12-16th in Banff Alberta north of the border. Wish we could make it to both of them; along with Parade at the lake of the ozarks too! you can think of Treffen as an “eat, drive, eat” kind of event. registration opened on Wednesday and included a Welcome reception on the back patio of the Grove Park inn. What a view! The days include a variety of drives to include a run to the “Tail of dragon”, tours to a motorcycle museum and the Cradle of Forestry. other eclectic options included the Art & Chocolate tour, the Funky Junk Tour and the Brew City tour. Another favorite was the White Water rafting and Guided Waterfall Tours. The last one included scenes from the “last of the Mohicans” movie. The schedule allowed everyone to pick and choose what they wanted to do. But we did coordinate a group tour to the lake lure inn and Boat Tour that was a lot of fun. We barely scratched the surface of the great roads in the North Carolina mountains. you could easily spend a week just driving the great mountain roads within an hour of Asheville. We also coordinated on the trip into downtown Asheville for dinner on one of the nights.
Enjoying Treffen: Valerie Dru, Paul Oberdorfer, George & Pam Michaels, Phil & Josie Grandfield, Betty & Jim Kendall and Mary Ball
Another local highlight was a trip to America’s House – if you happen to be a billionaire. The Biltmore estate is not to be missed if you’re anywhere around Asheville. Biltmore House, the main residence, is a ‘Chateauesque-style’ mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt between 1889 and 1895 and is the largest privately owned house in the United States. Still owned by George Vanderbilt’s descendants, it stands today as one of the most prominent

Turkeys in the Trunk 2017 Article and photos by Phil Grandfield “Turkeys in the Trunk” has become one of our members’ favorite events of the year and 2017 proved to be no exception. The crisp fall weather was a perfect setting for the “weigh-in” at Checkered Flag Porsche in Virginia Beach, the drive to the Mayflower Marathon, and the funrun to Jacob and Jenny Kays house for a delicious catered dinner party. if you weren’t able to make it to the Kays’ house you missed some great food. it was so good, many folks asked Jacob for his recipe. Found it here in this issue of the Ho. This year our region expanded our giving spirit by joining with the Shenandoah region’s “Turkeys in the Frunk” event hosted by euroclassics in richmond. it was their first year sponsoring a holiday food drive but certainly won’t be the last!
Porsche loaded with turkeys
eight percent! First Settlers donations equaled about 8% of the total number of meals that the Food Bank provided as a result of the three-day Mayflower Marathon. They converted our donation of $15,000 and 4200 pounds of food into 48,000 Thanksgiving meals! Thanks for Checkered Flag for hosting the weigh-in again this year and for our members for turning out with trunks full of food and with open check books! our small group of very generous people makes a big impact to helping to feed our community during the holidays.

Jacob's Almost Famous Aloha Ribs by Jacob Kay
This is a recipe was served at Turkeys in the Trunk. Collaborating with my Uncle donald from Maui. Beef short ribs: 7-8-lbs of beef short ribs, “flanken” (cross cut) with or without rib bones We find the thicker boneless version at Costco, and slice them to about 1/3” to ¼“ thick before marinating. Marinade: 1 cup dark soysauce 1 oz. ginger (1 thumb) 1 cup water 2 stalks green onion, finely chopped, 1/2 for marinade & 1/2 for garnish 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1 1/2 cups brown sugar 1 - 2 lemons or lime 4 - 5 cloves garlic Mix the first 6 ingredients and stir to ensure sugar has mostly dissolved. Squeeze in fresh lemon or lime juice to your preference. Place ribs in large ziploc bag(s). Pour in mixture. Sprinkle in an addn’l ½ cup of brown sugar. Squeeze air out of bag and seal ziploc. Massage to make sure marinade is evenly distributed. refrigerate and marinate for 2-4 days depending on thickness of meat. Mix and turnover marinade twice daily. Cooking over gas or charcoal grill: Preheat grill at high to burn off residue. Turn down to medium for grilling. Cook 2-4 min on each side depending on thickness and your preference. Sprinkle sesame seeds to taste. Turn over meat on grill once, and once only. When you see the edge starts to char, turn them immediately. do not step away during cooking. They cook very fast, and the sugary marinade can burn easily.

Help Us Build a House for a Veteran! Habitat for Heros by Phil Grandfield
Since 2009, First Settlers region has made it a priority to contribute to our communities through a robust Charity program. our members and sponsors and have generously contributed $221,085 and 37,831 pounds of food to various charitable organizations. From our annual New year Parties, Spring Charity events, 50th and 55th Anniversary Weekends, “Air & Auto Classic” car shows and “Turkeys in the Trunk” food drives, to monthly breakfast raffles and driver education Charity laps, we’ve shown that while we love the cars, it really is about the people. our program has been recognized at the national level, having received multiple Porsche Club of America Public Service Awards including first place in 2013 and contributed to our designation as region of the year in 2012. each year, the FSr Charity Committee reviews our list of sponsored organizations, takes input from members and chooses several charities to support for the upcoming year. our goals include “keeping it local” and maximizing the impact of our donation levels. our FSr members on the Habitat for Heroes Committee are: Josie Grandfield, Phil Grandfield, Pam Michaels, George Michaels, Mark Hugel, Ken Thomas. Talk to them if you have questions!!! For 2018, the FSr Charity Committee and Board of directors have decided to raise the bar and pursue a project to build a home for a qualified Military Veteran family in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of South Hampton roads through their Habitat for Heroes program. Based on our proven history of generosity, along with volunteering our time to “swing a hammer”, we’re confident that we can accomplish the goal of building the “First Settlers region Habitat for Heroes Home”!

How can you help? donate and volunteer! While our charity-focused events for 2018 will give you the opportunity to contribute, we also encourage you to fill out a pledge form which you will receive in the mail, or go online and help FSr achieve our $50,000 goal. Not sure how much to donate? How about a “tank of gas”, an “oil change” or “set of tires”? Feeling generous? How about a “de Weekend”? every donation counts! ready to swing a hammer or do some painting? We’ll have many opportunities during the year for you to put in some time at the construction site, but you can also sign up for an individual time slot to help out. it doesn’t get any easier. All funds will be “restricted” and go directly into the FSr Habitat for Heroes account. We can make this happen!!! We’re not forgetting our other supported charities and will be participating in fund raisers for Horizons and having the annual “Turkeys in the Trunk” food drive. Come next year, we’ll be back to devoting our efforts to support the Foodbank, Boys Home and Horizons Hampton roads. You can donate directly on the Habitat for Humanity website at www.shrhabitat@org. Select “First Settlers Region-PCA Cruisin’ for a Cause” which will take you to our donation page. Horizons TopGolf Fore Kids by Phil Grandfield
Horizons Hampton roads is sponsoring the first annual TopGolf Fundraiser at the new entertainment venue in Virginia Beach on March 25th from 3 to 7PM. The “tournament” combines state-of-the-art golfing technology with competitive fun and great entertainment - all while raising money for a great cause. First of all, this has nothing to do with golf. Think about it as going to a sports bar with friends to enjoy food and drinks in a very casual atmosphere. The difference is you have something to do besides eat and watch TV. That something is to whack golf balls on a high-tech scored range, in a friendly competitive environment, laugh at the swings of the other teams, all while supporting the kids in the Horizons program. ok…. it does involve golf clubs and competitive games but it’s really about enjoying comradery with Porsche friends while raising money for a great cause. The point is you don’t have to be a golfer to have fun. in fact, TopGolf would be a great place to spend time even if you never swing a club. First Settlers has reserved spots for 12 players on two teams and registration is now open on www.motorsportreg.com. So pick your team and get signed up!! There are also spectator tickets available if you’d prefer to cheer your team on from the sidelines. This is going to be a blast!! The cost of registration is $180 per person to swing a club and $75 for spectators. All include Mexican food, beverages, two drink tickets for adult beverages and plenty of comradery and golf lies! learn more about Horizons Hampton roads at www.horizonshamptonroads.org and about TopGolf at https://topgolf.com

Porsche Technicians
ins and outs of Porsche along with the function flow of the workshop and dealership.
in this technical article i thought it would be interesting to give an inside look at what it takes to be a Porsche technician.
Bronze Level Technician – Service Technician After completing many online courses and attending a few instructor-led classes over a year or two period, apprentices have the opportunity to take an in depth online test at the beginning or end of the year to become a Bronze level Technician. The online and instructor-led classes for this level cover the fundamentals of the engineering theory behind all of our mechanical, electrical, and electronic systems and Porsches internal website and diagnostic equipment. The test consists of questions based around what was taught in these programs. Upon successful completion, the Technician receives a plaque with a medallion for each class successfully completed.
by: Joe Finkle
How do we become one? How to become a Porsche Technician is like playing the board game “The Game of life”. When you first start out you can choose to go to college or go straight into a career. if someone chooses to go straight into a career it will take somewhere around 3-5 years for them to be considered for a Porsche Technician position. Most dealerships require experience in another German auto manufacturer paired with those years of experience. if someone chooses college, then the best route is to attend Universal Technical institute (UTi) and have a GPA of 4.0 or close to it. if this is the case, then no previous experience is required. UTi takes less than one year to complete and after students graduate and are selected by Porsche, they attend the Porsche Technology Apprenticeship Program (PTAP) for an additional 23 weeks. So, in a year’s time they can go from never turning a wrench to working in a Porsche dealership.
Silver Level Technician – System Technician After successfully becoming a Bronze Technician the online training continues with a deeper look into what Porsche refers to as systems (i.e., chassis systems, electrical systems, and fuel and ignition). These online courses are prerequisites to their respective instructor-led classes where Technicians are able to get hands on experience. After completing these courses, the Technician has the opportunity to partake in the online test that usually happens in the beginning of the year. if they are able to pass the online portion of the test they are then enrolled into a hands-on practical that takes place later in the year. Successfully completing this test opens the Technician up for the next level that is most strived for.
When do we become one? How is followed by when. if someone was able to take the short route then they most likely spent a year in schooling and went right into a dealership. if someone took the longer route then they probably spent 3-5 years in a different brand before transferring to Porsche. When in life? is another good question. Some are kids, right out of high school, who never turned a wrench in their life. They go to school, graduate, and start wrenching by the time they are 19. The most popular age range when joining is anywhere between mid twenties to mid thirties. Some people work their entire life first and then, always having had a passion for Porsche, make the switch before they retire.
Gold Level Technician – Electronics/Diagnostic Specialist Here’s where it gets intense. in Bronze, training the Technician learned the fundamentals of engineering theory. in Silver, they learned Porsche’s systems. For Gold, Porsche combines these subjects and then goes deeper. Three classes are required in order to be eligible to take the Gold Test - Advanced Fuel & ignition, Advanced electrical Systems, and (HVT) Hybrid/ e-Hybrid Technology and High Voltage Safety. By the time the Technician is finished with these courses they no longer look at a fault code the same. Before they reached this level, they probably read out the fault code, used guided fault finding to determine the cause, and then ordered the correct part to rectify the issue. While there’s nothing wrong with that approach, a Technician will truly understand why the fault code was set after going through these final courses. They have a much better understanding of how the system works and why it failed. diagnostic and testing practices become more thorough and when making a repair the Technician takes into consideration not only the area being corrected, but the surrounding areas as well. All of this is preparation for the Gold Test, which is in the same format as the Silver Test. A month is given to take the online test and in that month a Technician will spend much time searching in the deepest part of the Porsche network, finding answers to questions they didn’t think existed. if the Technician successfully passes the test, they are able to take the hands-on practical. This is where they get to put their expertise to the test. After the hands-on test is taken, whether you pass or fail, the Technician attends a class called “Customer Communication”, which is a crash course on non-verbal communication, personality typing, and situational customer interaction exercises. At this point in their career, they are equipped to handle just about anything.
Why do we become one? Passion. Some already have it. They grew up around Porsches or at had an interest about them since they were young. Some don’t know they have it until they join and go through a few instructor-led classes and then realize that Porsche is one of the most fascinating manufactures to work for. Getting to drive them everyday helps with this as well. if someone didn’t have a why before that experience, they will after. Why should someone become one? i’ve been thinking about this for a while. Porsche is a place to perfect your craft. Sure, anyone can perform an oil change, but do they know why? do they truly know how? i’ll answer that one in a future article. Who are we? Porsche Technicians come in all shapes and sizes with different backgrounds, interests, and personalities. There is no cookie cutter outline for who makes a great Porsche Technician. Sure, there are some attributes that are desirable, but it’s not a requirement. There are a few similarities that i do see amongst many Porsche Technicians. The biggest one being attention to detail, almost to the point of having oCd. Another common one is the desire to know more and have a deeper understanding our vehicles and how they function. What do we do? There are four positions as a Technician in a Porsche workshop. each position has a different set of expectations that sets the guidelines for what we do.
Where do we come from? Most, if not all, Porsche technicians relocate to work at a dealership. With just over 150 dealerships in the U.S., there isn’t many to choose from. luckily for us, they are usually located in or by major cities that most people would enjoy living in or near. one observation i have made is that most dealerships in the South consist of technicians who relocate from the North. They are usually trying to escape the cold and the snow, myself included in that.
Entry Level – Apprentice our apprentices usually get the opportunity to work without the pressure of flat-rate for up to one year. in that time period, they are able to apply what they learned in PTAP to real life situations. it also gives them the opportunity to get used to the function flow of the workshop and dealership. For those who didn’t attend PTAP and are coming from another brand, it allows them to get used to all the HorizoNTAlly oPPoSed

PCA Public Service Award 2017 First Settlers region was awarded Third Place in the 2017 Public Service Award competition. This is the sixth time we have been awarded an Honorable Award or Podium position since beginning our charitable efforts seven years ago. We were the overall winners in 2013! This is a transcript of the announcement made at Porsche Parade at Jay Peak, Vermont. We can all be proud of the generosity shown by our members! Thanks for your continued support!! “The region’s events have become the hands-down club favorites. They focus on local charities and involve a diverse group of members in planning and execution. Their outstanding results demonstrate their commitment to public service and support of PCA goals. last year, their efforts led to 10 events. This year, this region raised $45,525.16 and 4,871 pounds of food for local charities: Their “Turkeys-in-the-Trunk” Food drive supported the Mayflower Marathon (Foodbank) raising 4,871 pounds of food and over $9,880 in cash. Their 7th Annual Air and Auto Classic Charity Car Show also netted them $9,300. one of their more notable events included members from the region traveling to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia for a multi-region, three-day weekend focused on charity and service. This year they added a unique event to help with disaster relief to help the residents of richwood, WV. The town, near some of their favorite driving roads, was devastated by floods and they needed help. Their members came together and sponsored a “relief truck” loaded with much needed building supplies. The event took months of planning involving a committee of region members and they had many challenges to overcome. Meeting with the hotel events coordinator several times to arrange meeting space, the banquet, parking, catering and marketing. Three separate planning visits by different members to richwood to survey the damage and get a first-hand view of the devastation and an understanding of their needs. Negotiations with local Virginia Beach merchants who heeded our call for help to assist people in a different state. They garnered support from a national appliance retailer to buy items at-cost, a garden supply center that donated much needed grass seed, and with a building supply company that donated sheet rock, sub-flooring, insulation and nails. Members loaded a 20-foot UHaul truck to the roof with supplies, drove it 300 miles to the mountains of West Virginia with an escort of Porsches, and personally delivered the supplies to the waiting residents of richwood. Meeting with local merchants in Staunton VA to include them as “dealers” in the unique “Poker Walk” that involved walking, vice driving, around town engaging the local community in the very fun event. Planning twoday long fun-runs, which included coordination with local Sheriff’s departments for traffic control and lunch at a historic inn. The other highlight of the weekend was the Silent Auction that netted $8,435! A unique feature of this auction was the use of the First Settlers website to afford non-attending members the opportunity to bid online. A lot of work, and a lot of support raised. For that, we would like to congratulate our third place winner and present them with a check for $500, to the First Settlers region” (Treffen: Continued from page 3)
remaining examples of the Gilded Age. Members of the family lived in the house until 1956 and, in case you’re interested, is valued at $157 million. Though we didn’t sleep in the Biltmore, the Grove Park inn is a very cool second option. it’s proof that “Big Pharma” isn’t a new business phenomena. edwin Wiley Grove purchased a pharmacy in Paris Tennessee just after the Civil War while in his mid-twenties. He invented Grove’s Tasteless Chill Tonic as a quinine to prevent malaria. it sold better than Coca-Cola and made young edwin a very rich man. He partnered with another pharmacy innovator from detroit named Fred Seely. Together the two men ventured into real estate in 1909, buying the 408 acres in North Asheville that would become Grove Park inn. Four-hundred men worked 10-hour shifts six days a week. With only the use of mules, wagons and ropes, granite boulders, some weighing as much as 10,000 pounds, were hauled from Sunset Mountain to build the hotel. Seely kept his promise to be open for business in less than one year from the ground breaking. Just three days shy of one year, The Grove Park inn opened on July 12, 1913. Secretary of State, William Jennings Bryan, delivered the keynote address to four hundred of the most distinguished men of the South, gathered for the opening banquet. He had no idea of how true his words would become when he proclaimed that The Grove Park inn “was built for the ages”. HorizoNTAlly oPPoSed

Today, the Grove Park inn remains a classic, old-school stone structure with massive fireplaces and a world class spa. it is a great place to host a Porsche ‘meeting’. We met PCA members from as far away as Washington state and New Mexico. in fact, we met the organizers of the Treffen Tamaya scheduled for April in New Mexico. A key difference between Treffen and Parade is the smaller events are run by the local region – not the National Staff. The locals from the Appalachian region were great hosts and did a fantastic job with the planning, organization and execution of the weekend. Appalachian is a small region and i think they were outnumbered by the visitors! one downside of the Treffen model, compared to Parade, is the lack of any large gatherings of cars. A highlight of Parade is the Concours and displays of historic Porsches. Another is watching the competition at the autocross. The only places to see the great collection of cars was in the parking garage of the hotel and the rendezvous point for the fun runs at the local mall. The key to attending future Treffens is to plan ahead. Treffen Asheville sold out in 53 minutes!! registration for Tamaya will mostly have come and gone by the time you read this; but we might have time to sign up for Banff! As cool as the Grove Park inn and western North Carolina are the Fairmont Banff and the Canadian rockies will be over the top! Hey, maybe we can get on the list to host a Treffen Williamsburg! Happy New Year First Settler's Region It was a great time!!! by: Vincent Canepa / Photo credit: Mike Ball This year’s FSr New year Party was held January 13th, 2018 at the Kingsmill resort in Williamsburg. There was a nice turnout for an evening of fun, camaraderie, great food and, new this year, live jazz and dancing to the sounds of the very talented and versatile musicians of “limelight”. even the weather cooperated, with the rain holding off on Saturday and Sunday morning dawning beautifully clear and bright.
Melinda Cagle & Bret Jacobson
As has become customary, the new slate of officers was introduced with doug Worrall continuing as President, Melinda Cagle as eastern Vice President, Kevin Clark as Western Vice President, ed Merry as Secretary, John Schwaebler as Treasurer and Vince Canepa as Activities officer.
Brenda Wiggins
The now famous “White elephant Auction” brought out an interesting collection of items and an enthusiastic group of bidders. in the end, $3455 was raised for the FSr charity efforts, a truly wonderful way to kick off the New year. Thanks to everyone for their generosity!
Jacob & Jenny Kay
Josie Grandfield discussed FSr’s charity campaign for the upcoming year, noting that for 2018 FSr has chosen to support Habitat for Heroes, a subset of Habitat for Humanity that helps create affordable housing solutions for Veteran and active-duty military families in our community, while Mark Hugel gave a detailed presentation on the program. FSr will continue to support Horizons Hampton roads by supporting their March 25th fund raising event at Top Golf in Virginia Beach. Finally, we will continue supporting the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the eastern Shore through our annual “Turkeys in the Trunk” event in November.
Bill Alley
As with all FSr events, this one could not be a success without the voluntary contributions of several FSr members. Jerry and Kathy Kent did the table decorations, Phil and Josie Grandfield set up the White elephant Auction, George and Pam Michaels arranged for the band and printed the programs and Vince Canepa made the “tent” cards and built the video. Thank you! See you all next year!
