From the President Doug Worrall Hello members, Ho! Ho! Ho! Horizontally opposed that is! i hope you’ve had a great holiday season by the time you get this issue. Maybe one of you has something shiny and new with a stuttgart emblem in the driveway! if not, join the rest of us in holding out hope for next year. and speaking of years, help us celebrate the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. We’ll party it up at the Kingsmill resort in Williamsburg on January 19, 2019. live music, dinner, dancing, and a “White elephant” auction for charity will be the highlights of a great evening together. elections will be complete, so we’ll also get to meet the newly elected Fsr executive Council. yours truly will be a member of that distinguished group in the capacity of immediate Past President. there is a list of the new executive Council posted in this issue. some people in new positions, along with a lot of continuity. i am humbled to have served amongst some truly exceptional people that make it a pleasure to be a member of this little ol’ car club! i’ll save my individual heartfelt thanks for when i see them at the new year Party. one of the clubs’ great accomplishments this year has been the funding and now the building of our Habitat for Humanity home. We had our first opportunity to help with its construction on December 1st. We were able to meet the new homeowner and her son. they were so excited! the amount of progress we made impressed the Habitat staff. especially because we had a few raw amateurs including myself. ask me about shooting a nail gun for the first time! We have 2 more build dates where we can help. January 12th, and then again in February. thank you so much for your generosity in making this vision(thanks Josie) possible. there are tons of events being finalized for 2019. they will be scheduled, budgeted, and approved at the next board meeting. i’m looking forward to seeing you at the new year Party and welcoming in the new Board members. Here’s to a fantastic 2019. “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

Keep the shiny side up!

MEMBER

Meet Erik, Ruth, Ellen and Judy Apotheker

How long have you been a PCA member? since august of 1987, becoming active just before purchasing my first Porsche, a '72 914. ruth became a member after our marriage, the divestiture of three 914s and purchase of a rothmans Challenge 944. We recently relocated and transferred out of Connecticut Valley region.

SPOTLIGHT

So, have Porsche's always been part of your family life? i was first exposed to the cars in high school after my uncle purchased a euro 356C. ruth worked in Pit lane while pregnant with ellen. a good friend and i were co-driving an extrans am 911st 2.5 Fia Coupe in a 3-hour enduro. ellen was 3 months old when she went to her first race – same 911, at Mid-ohio. Judy's first ride, not in a car seat, was in the back of our 3.2 Carrera.

Judy, Erik, Ellen and Ruth Apotheker

Most memorable car related moment? i'd say it would be a toss-up between competing at the Double 50 at Watkins glen (the first rennsport event) and being at the drivers meeting in awe of the 40+ legendary drivers in attendance, who i was alongside. teaching my dad to drive 5speed in the rothmans car. running a 911st at 7,000 rPM in 4th gear on the streets of sebring Florida while chasing a Penske Camaro and under police escort. Being given run of the private collection at gunnar racing and opening the door to find a 917, and Kevin's cat sleeping in the back of "Baby", the Carrera rsr turbo 2.1 litre. Darned lucky cat! or, almost any drive we take in the 356 because it pays homage to my uncle who started this multi-generational love affair. Picture courtesy of Erik Apotheker

How about you ladies? ruth: i love the multiday PCa tours we have taken. there is just something about the combination of the engine sound and watching the silhouettes of the other cars in the distance, that i find relaxing. ellen: probably taking the 356 to an air-cooled show and meeting igor sikorsky the grandson of the helicopter inventor. He had some great stories and was so interested in our car. Judy: i really enjoyed the last PCa Father's Day Concourse, especially the 1929 Bentley my dad's friend brought.

First Settlers Region's Annual New Year Party

Erik, what is your favorite Porsche? i love the 934/5 and 906, all 356s and low bumper 911s. Currently, i am partial to the new 911 Carrera t. Do i have to pick one? it's kind of like picking a favorite child.

Kingsmill resort in Williamsburg, saturday, January 19, 2019 at 6PM. register on www.Motorsportreg.com by January 16, 2019 Cost: $63 per person Club discount available for lodging Call for reservations: (757)253-1703 or (800)832-5665

Why PCA? the cars. the people. How the cars and the characters weave a beautiful tapestry. So, what's next for the Apotheker family? We all look forward to becoming active with Fsr and to the next Porsche chapter of our story. it's sure been a blast so far. Horizontally oPPoseD

No-Bake Chocolate Coconut Snowballs - yielD: 30 Balls PreP tiMe: 55 MinUtes (inClUDes CHilling) CooK tiMe: 3 MinUtes

Ingredients: • • • • • • • •

3 cups (240g) old-fashioned rolled oats 3 cups (240g) sweetened shredded coconut, divided 1/2 cup (1 stick; 115g) unsalted butter 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar 1/2 cup milk 6 tablespoons (31g) unsweetened natural or dutch-process cocoa powder 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Directions: 1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

6.

Place the oats and 1 cup of shredded coconut in a large bowl. set aside. (reserve the remaining coconut for step 3.) Combine the butter, sugar, milk, cocoa, and salt together in a large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk until the butter melts, then bring to a boil. allow to boil for 1 minute without whisking. remove from heat, stir in the vanilla extract, then pour over the oats/coconut. stir until combined. Cover tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap and chill for at least 45 minutes and up to 2-3 days. Meanwhile, pulse the remaining coconut in a food processor to break it down. it's easier to coat the balls when the coconut shreds are broken up/smaller. line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. and make sure there is enough room in your refrigerator for the baking sheets. Using a 1-tablespoon cookie scoop (or simply a spoon), roll into 1 tablespoon balls. the mixture may get a little sticky as you work, but just form it into a ball as best you can. roll balls in coconut and place on the baking sheets. refrigerate for at least 30-60 minutes to "set." snowballs will stay fresh covered at room temperature for 3 days or in the refrigerator for 1 week.

Three Museums One Racing Legend

the models appeared to be an early “long hood”, a mid-80s Carrera and a late model 991. i’m not sure if there is a formal name for this sculpture but “Porsches on Poles” would be a good description.

text and photos by Dave Wallace

as we entered the museum, i noticed that a film crew was heading up the elevator and there was a well-dressed older man with them who was carrying a rear deck lid with a duck tail spoiler. i wondered what that was about.

in the Fall issue, Vince Canepa submitted an excellent article about the trip he made with his family to germany and italy and the visits they made to the museums of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz and another automotive museum in italy. My wife, nancy, and i made a similar trip in september when we visited germany, austria and France and toured the facilities of Porsche, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

the museum had cars ranging from models that Professor Porsche worked on in his early years, and Porsches spanning the gap from early production cars to a pre-production Mission e. My personal favorite was the special 1,000,000th 911 that was produced in May 2017. the car was built to resemble the company car driven by Ferry Porsche in the early 70s. it was green and the door mirrors and other trim pieces were silver to resemble the chrome trim of that period. it also featured silver wheels in the iconic Fuchs style that, in my opinion, Porsche should never have stopped using.

We started out in Munich and visited BMW’s facility there. the displays at the BMW museum span the company history from when they started building airplanes and includes the period after World War i when they switched to motorcycles because german airplane production had been banned. Most of the automobile displays featured examples of their production cars throughout the years. there were several notable racing cars on display including two of the famous “art” cars that ran in gt racing series during the 70s.

in one section, there are a number of race cars that were winners at le Mans and other endurance events. there is one display with a 956 mounted upside down to dramatize the fact that when the car reached 321.4 kilometers per hour (199.3 mph) it would generate enough downforce to allow it to be driven across a ceiling, the camera crew had set up in this area and they were filming the gentleman who had the duck tail deck lid sitting up beside him on a pedestal as he was speaking. Unfortunately, he was speaking german so i didn’t know what he was saying. i did discover that he was Jacky ickx, a racing name i was familiar with and who is a six-time winner of le Mans. His name appears as a driver on several of the cars on display there.

We also toured much of the BMW manufacturing facility in Munich where they build three and Five series vehicles. it was fascinating watching the robotic arms lift, turn, position and weld the body pieces into a complete unit body. actual humans were working in the areas where smaller pieces such as the wiring and fuel systems were being installed.

after finishing our tour, we stopped at the ground floor café. several of the film crew and Mr. ickx were there at a table near us. the duck tail spoiler was on the floor under the table. We went through the gift shop and when we walked out, i saw that Mr. ickx was now sitting alone at the table. i couldn’t help myself. Hoping that he spoke english, i approached his table and said that i saw him being interviewed upstairs and that i was curious about the spoiler he had with him. He was very friendly and seemed pleased that i had asked. in rather heavily accented english, he said that the spoiler had been on a car that he previously owned but sold to another owner some years ago. the new owner had replaced the duck tail with a whale tail spoiler. He said that he now owned the car again and he planned to reinstall the deck lid with the duck tail spoiler to bring the car back to the way it was originally. He was very pleasant to speak with and said that he was heading to California in the next week to attend Porsche’s rennsport reunion at laguna seca. Meeting a racing legend like Jacky ickx was the perfect ending to my Porsche pilgrimage.

the following day we picked up our rental Ford Fiesta from Hertz for our loop through austria. the car had a three-cylinder engine, five speed manual transmission and not much horsepower. Climbing in the alps usually required over 5,000 rPM in second gear. on stretches of the autobahn we were able to reach about 150 kilometers per hour before coming up on traffic or sections of posted reduced speeds. the handling wasn’t too bad though and we averaged about 49 MPg for the trip. that was a good number considering the lowest equivalent gasoline price we paid was $6.01 per gallon. one of the most interesting things i saw at the Mercedes museum was a display of how they handled data collection in the early days of using computers. they instrumented one car with sensors mounted in the locations where they wanted to take measurements. another car had the equipment necessary to record the data. Being before the days of wireless and blue tooth, they had cables running between the two cars. imagine two cars on a test track, one behind the other, each with a roof rack device attached to the top and a bundle of wires and electrical lines attached to a cable suspended between them. For some Mercedes engineers, those must have been the “good old days”.

the next day we took the train from stuttgart to Paris for the remainder of our vacation trip. any ground speed that i was not able to experience on the autobahn in the rental Ford Fiesta was more than made up by the speed of the train. Video monitors in the passenger car periodically displayed the train’s speed. the highest speed i saw was 317 kilometers per hour. that calculates to over 197 miles per hour!

at the Porsche museum, i thought the most dramatic display was located outside, in the traffic circle, not far from the building entrance. there are three large spires that rise what i estimated to be about 75 feet in the air. at the top of each spire is a full-size, white Porsche 911.

Horizontally oPPoseD

all-in-all it was a great trip. next time, though, i think i’ll rent a faster car.

Habitat for Humanity - Cruisin’ for a Cause! submitted by Phil grandfield Photo credit: Phil grandfield and Jerry Kent the project to build a First settlers region house for Habitat for Humanity that started early in 2018 took a giant leap forward in December. We held our first Porsche Club member build day with the goal of building and erecting the exterior walls. We met that goal by lunchtime! the Habitat for Humanity building coordinator made an extra run for more 2x4 studs and we kept the nail guns firing until we had all but one small interior wall erected. Well done, team! the weather forecast was a bit dicey but our volunteers all showed up dressed for the day including several guys sporting tim “the tool Man” taylor leather tool belts. We gathered for a “pre-flight” safety brief and divided into teams each led by an experienced “red Hat” Habitat for Humanity core volunteer. the vetting process for the teams was simple; just a show of hands for anyone who has done any construction framing. it turns out several folks have done this type of work before and it showed. the red Hats are dedicated long-term volunteers who devote their time to making sure us rookie volunteers follow the building plans and don’t get hurt. it was clear that “no previous experience” was required! But before we loaded the nail guns, Dan lear from Habitat introduced the family who will be living in the house we’re building. Cecilia and her eight-year-old son Mason were on hand for a brief introduction. Meeting the people whose lives will change when the house is complete made the day even more special. after Mark Hugel lead us in short prayer we pitched in and went to work.

Vince Canepa

the raised foundation, floor joists and subflooring had been completed earlier. the layout for the walls were marked on the subflooring to include opening for the doors and windows. Just follow the instructions! We thought all the nail driving would be done the old fashioned way by swinging hammers. Fortunately, that wasn’t the case and Habitat provided several pneumatic air guns. good thing or we’d still be working on the first wall! Michele Curtis and Pam Michaels had never wielded such tools but then picked them up and fired away. you can consider them pros now! our sponsors have been critical to making this project a reality. a shout out goes to Checkered Flag Porsche Virginia Beach, BMr investments, Paneling Factory inc., sherwin-Williams Paint, sherwin Williams Floor Covering, Ferguson Facilities supply, lMn Motorsports, Battery outlet, Bell insurance agency, agean Pools, air-tite, st Paul’s episcopal Church in richmond, Prevailance, Brothers Printing, Knights of Columbus Chesapeake, and Watershed security. thanks for your support and generosity!

the weather held out with some jackets shed as the day warmed up. the small team approach worked well with different groups working on different parts of the house. all hands pitched in for the lifting the heavier walls. raising the walls were some of the most fun steps because it showed real progress and the site began looking like a house. the layout of the three bedroom, two bath home made more sense as we connected more of the walls. thanks to the First Build Day team! in addition to Mark, Michele and Pam the team include Vince Canepa, Jeff Curtis and his friend taz sessoms, george Michaels, Damien Walsh, Doug Worral, Fred Donnell, Jason Horner, Jim liedman, Phil grandfield, Mike Wahl, Mario and stephanie limon from our sponsor Prevailance and Jerry Kent manning the circular saw station. Horizontally oPPoseD

We have three more build days on the calendar. January 12, February 2nd and February 16th, 2019. if you’re interest in volunteering, watch for updates on enews emails with details on how to register with Habitat for Humanity and sign up via Motorsportreg.com. 8

Porsche to make 1,948 911 Speedsters for 2019 article by Damon lowney, www.pca.org/news Porsche will produce a new 911 speedster in limited quantities, the automaker announced today. the car will be based on the gt3 and uses its engine, a 4.0-liter flat-six with more than 500 horsepower. Production will be limited to 1,948 examples, a number chosen to reflect the first Porsche, the mid-engined 356/01, present to the public on June 8, 1948. the new speedster, which was developed by Porsche Motorsport in Weissach with syle Porsche and exclusive Manufaktur, is nearly identical to the speedster concept presented earlier this year. the speedster will have a shortened windshield as well as shorter side windows. like 911 gt2 rs, the front fenders are made of carbon fiber, as well as the hood. When lowered, the tonneau cover is stored underneath the double-bubble carbon-fiber panel behind the rear seats. When raised, it's fastened by tenax buttons. the talbot-style mirrors will make it to production, as well as the centrally-positioned fuel cap. the 21-inch wheels are inspired by those seen on the Porsche 911 rsr and gt3 r race cars. the new speedster also marks the introduction of Porsche Heritage Design Packages, a program by Porsche exclusive that allows even more customization. the car will go into production in the first half of 2019, Porsche says, though a price has not been announced yet. Meeting a Legend By Wayne Verdaasdonk, 19 year member of First settler’s region Porsche Club of america Photo credit: Melissa Verdaasdonk

“Fireside Chat” hosted by leigh Diffey (the former voice of Formula one racing.) at southPoint Porsche in Durham, north Carolina. this event was in cooperation with the Hurricane region of the PCa southPoint Porsche and Visions of Power Press. Members of the Hurricane region had been able to preorder their own copy of Hurley’s book which was available for pickup at the event. the event was catered and everyone was treated to a barbeque lunch. after lunch, leigh Diffey introduced the guest of honor along with sean Cridland the co-author. there was a brief question and answer period followed by the presentation of the books. Both sean and Hurley spent time signing books and posing for photographs. Southpoint Porsche, Durham, North Carolina

i was thrilled when it was my turn to meet the legend. Hurley (who turned 70 last week) was gracious, humble and soft spoken. a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

recently i learned that an autobiography had been released about Hurley Haywood. the book was written by Hurley along with sean Cridland and is published by Visions of Power Press. (available at www.hurleybook.com) Being a devout fan of Hurley i immediately ordered my own copy. the book is priced at $95.59 and shipping was via media rate and cost me $6.23. once i received my copy i understood why shipping utilizing the media rate was a great idea. this book is HeaVy! over seven pounds in weight, 11.5 inches square and a full 2 inches thick. Before considering this a coffee table book, you might want to check to see if your coffee table can handle this monster. the book is well produced with a foreward by another one of my heroes, Patrick long. the story covers the life of Hurley Haywood from the beginning, including his start in racing, his military experience in Viet nam his return to motorsports where he formed his close friendship with Peter gregg. it covers all the big wins, Daytona, le Mans and of course all of the great vehicles he competed in. For those of you who know about Hurley, this book will invite you into the private side of the man and his amazing career. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this living legend this book is a great way to get acquainted. Filled with beautiful photographs this book is also a great addition to any Porschefiles collection. i learned that Hurley would be attending a

as i walked away i found myself standing next to a man i immediately recognized as Klaus zellmer, the Ceo of Porsche north america! What a nice bonus. He was touring the dealership with Phil Whitehead the general Manager. as Mr. zellmer spoke with the technicians in the service department i asked Mr. Whitehead for an introduction. Mr. Whitehead was as excited to have zellmer at his dealership as i was to have encountered him there. He gladly agreed and took me to meet Klaus who was very approachable and friendly. He posed for a photo with me and thanked me for my interest and support of the Porsche brand.

The author with Hurley Haywood

all in all this was a great day filled with beautiful cars, an amazing premier dealership, a Porsche dignitary and a living legend. i got a chance to visit with members of the Hurricane region of PCa who once again proved “it’s not just the cars, it’s the people!” if you find yourself in the Chapel Hill area of north Carolina i highly recommend that you visit southPoint Porsche.

Most of us do a good job at keeping up with the maintenance needs of our Porsches. We aren’t as good at maintaining our profile information to be current or correct in the PCa database. Most frequently, we fail to either add new Porsche acquisitions and/or remove Porsches we no longer own. incorrect or incomplete information affects the club’s ability to communicate with you and affects your ability to maximize the value of your membership. if you are not receiving any communications from the club, it is likely that we have incorrect or incomplete information in your member profile. Turkeys in the Trunk 2018 (Photo Credit: ed Merry, Kathy Kent & Phil grandfield the First settlers’ annual caravan from Checkered Flag Porsche to the Mayflower Marathon in Virginia Beach has become one of our favorite events. in 2018, the weekend event on the saturday before thanksgiving got even bigger with our coordination with the shenandoah region for a food drive in the richmond area. our members really step up every year around the holidays to give back to our communities and help people in need. Erik Apotheker didn’t win the prize. But, his 356 is a winner!

Thanks to Ed Klima, GM of Checkered Flag, for his support

Prepping for the event at Checkered Flag has become a routine; but one with great attention to detail. the staff really rolls out the ‘red carpet’ by cleaning the floor of the service Bay entrance with a scrubber and pulling tables from their classroom. the lunch treats provided by the Club included lumpia and chocolate brownies from Papa John’s (who knew they made great desert to go along with their pizza??). team Kopp pitched in again this year by running the weigh scales and counting the turkeys lifted from trunks and back seats. the tallies are kept secret until the big reveal at the end. the atmosphere is fun and the carwatching through the service Bays is too. “Hey, when did you get that car!?”.

Team Kopp ran the scales

When the scoring was complete at Checkered Flag our numbers were impressive yet again. $8926 in cash – and that total did not rely on our usual charity profits made from the air & auto Classic Car show. We collected 5241 pounds of food including 246 frozen birds. the winners of the Porsche pedal car, donated by Checkered Flag Brian and Janice Woodard were great hosts! to the car with the most food by weight, were Jerry and Kathy Kent with 382 pounds of non-perishable food in their Boxster. the couple that brought the most turkeys were Vince and teresa Canepa with 25 included in their 357 pounds of food in their Boxster. (i’m making this comment from memory but pretty sure Boxsters have won this competition every year except one when top honors went to a 944!) our members out west joined with the shenandoah region for a turkeys in the trunk event in richmond. their numbers brought our total contribution to nearly $11,000 in cash, over 5530 pounds of food and over 270 turkeys. that food will feed a lot of hungry people! Congratulations to tim ashbridge for bringing the most food and winning the Porsche jacket donated by euroclassics Porsche. Navigators: Kathy Kent, Joyce Worrall, Josie Grandfield and Jen Costen

after our drive-by at the Mayflower Marathon to unload all the food and hand them a big check our caravan drove through the suffolk and isle of Wight countryside, to the home of Brian and Janice Woodard. Janice put on an amazing spread of food and has a wonderful knack for holiday decorating. everything was beautiful! even the garage! We spread out across the house and fire pits in the backyard and on the porch and made ourselves at home for the evening. thanks to Brian for breaking out his brand new bottle of Henry McKenna’s Kentucky Bourbon so we could sample the flavor of the whiskey ranked #2 in a blind taste test (not sorry we didn’t leave you very much……) thanks to all our members who come out for this event and show their generosity and compassion during the holidays! it’s lots of fun but more importantly it’s lots of “good”. see you next year!
