Tim Southall Scenes in Print 30 July - 3 September As a figurative artist, Tim Southall makes work that is a response to the world, taking inspiration from the rural environment in which he lives and works. Through his attempt to describe some of the oldest classical themes with a modern voice, Tim expresses something fresh and exciting. Often capturing a scene and animals in mid moment, he leaves the viewer to wonder what will happen next. This exhibition will showcase a collection of Tim’s screenprints, monoprints and etchings, all of which are informed by drawing and a strong use of composition.

Katherine Lees New Ashgate Winner at the Festival of Crafts, Farnham Maltings 2015
30 July - 10 September Katherine Lees was selected by the New Ashgate Gallery team as the most exciting maker at the Festival of Crafts, Farnham Maltings in October 2015. Katherine is a designer-maker specialising in ceramics which she combines with textiles and precious metals to produce unique objects including screen-printed porcelain vessels and contemporary porcelain jewellery. Katherine’s porcelain vessels are individually made by hand applying print directly to the raw clay surface through a screen. This unusual making technique is used to ensure every vessel is a one-off piece. By combining this relatively new decorating technique with porcelain pressed from Victorian vessels, Katherine produces a product that is contemporary and unique yet somehow reminds us of days gone by. Surrey Artist of the Year 2016 and Christiane Zschommler 17 September - 5 November Surrey Artist of the Year competition is a partnership between the New Ashgate and the Surrey Artists Open Studios. Starting in 2009; this aspirational exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during open studio visits. The top scoring artists come together for a programme of events. There is a wide variety of artworks on show, all offering different materials and techniques, from ceramics, collage, glass, jewellery, painting, and photography to printmaking, sculpture, textiles and woodwork - the wealth of Surrey creative talent.
The New Ashgate Gallery invites members of the public to come and vote for their favourite artist. During the exhibition, members of the public are encouraged to vote for an artist; and the artist with the most votes from public and judging panel, is named Surrey Artist of the Year 2016. The winner receives a bursary of £1,000 and a solo show. The shortlisted artists are Hannah Bruce, Christine Hopkins, Denise Jaques, JoJo Rowley, Jule Mallett, Rachel Mulligan and Jim Tucker. Throughout the exhibition, there will be the opportunity to view work by Christiane Zschommler who was crowned the Surrey Artist of the Year in 2015. In Christiane’s work, freezing the motion of water becomes abstract - something that exists only for the briefest of moments. There is poetry within the constantly rippling water.

Jane Crisp Maker in Focus 17 September - 5 November As a child Jane was taught the importance of looking after our habitats and environment. She became interested in the beauty of necessity. Today, Jane takes inspiration from her local Norfolk and Cambridgeshire countryside, history and tradition, flora and fauna. Jane loves colour and the textural qualities of natural materials like wood, wool and copper. Her work experiments with the power of invention through processes such as steam-bending that expose the natural properties of materials and that references history and sentiment. Jane amplifies these traditional values in an innovative way using the simplification of processes, crafts and construction techniques to celebrate the simplicity of design that uniforms both form and function.
