Thursday 26 April Meeting the Makers and Shakers University for the Creative Arts, Farnham, Small Lecture Theatre 11am, Registration 11.15, Welcome & announcement of the Winner of the Rising Stars Prize for Professional Development Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery, and Rebecca Skeels, Pathway Leader Jewellery and Metal work UCA. The Prize is supported by Andrew and Lucinda Fleming.

11.30- 12noon, Getting Together Professor Simon Olding, Director, Craft Study Centre An illustrated presentation that reflects on the practical ways that makers and craft organisations work together for mutual benefit. The presentation will cover issues such as internship, exhibiting, selling and dialogue and focus on the intertwining roles of the craft guild, the museum and the spaces in-between formal and informal interchanges.

SPEAKER PROFILES

Rebecca Skeels, Designer-Maker and Pathway Leader Jewellery and Metal work, UCA Rebecca is a designer-maker running her own business since 1994. Over the past 17 years Rebecca has worked on commissions as well as her own collections exhibiting through, galleries, shops, craft shows and trade exhibitions. She is now based in Farnham after completing a residency and solo show at South Hill Park Arts Centre. Rebecca is now senior tutor for threedimensional design and the jewellery and metalwork pathway leader at the University for the Creative Arts in Farnham, teaching and lecturing on a continually developing course, working with the jewellers, silversmiths and metalworkers of the future. UCA is one of Europe's leading arts and design institutions the University for the Creative Arts builds on a proud tradition of creative arts education spanning 150 years. Our campuses at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester are home to more than 6000 students from 76 countries studying courses in fashion, graphics, design, media, fine art and architecture.

Dr Outi Remes, Director, New Ashgate Gallery Outi is the Director of the New Ashgate Gallery, Surrey, and the Adjunct Associate Professor in Art History and Visual Culture at Richmond the American International University London. Outi also lectures at Birkbeck College, the University of London, and worked as the Head of Exhibitions at South Hill Park Arts Centre, Berkshire (2007-11). She is a curator of many projects.

She was awarded a PhD from the University of Reading and is a committee member of the national Museums and Exhibitions Group, the Association of Art Historians.

Professor Simon Olding, Director of Craft Study Centre Professor Simon Olding is Director of the Crafts Study Centre, University for the Creative Arts. A curator and writer, with recent books on The etchings of Bernard Leach and The Art of R J LLoyd, he is a Trustee of The Leach Pottery and Unravelled, President of the Walford Mill Craft Centre and an artistic assessor for the Arts Council England.

Madeline Furness, Crafts Council Madeleine Furness joined the Crafts Council in 2004 as Sales Officer for the Crafts Council Gallery Shop, and in 2006 moved across the organisation to the role of Maker Development Officer. Since then Madeleine’s main focus has been on support for emerging makers, primarily through Crafts Council Collective: Hothouse, the Crafts Council Development Award and Crafts Council Next Move. Prior to her roles at the Crafts Council Madeleine worked within jewellery retail and galleries. Originally trained in Jewellery at Middlesex University and mentored through the ArtsAdmin Franko B Mentoring Scheme, as a maker and artist Madeleine has exhibited her work internationally and is featured in a number of contemporary jewellery publications.

Caroline Jackman, Visual Arts Officer, Surrey Open Studios Co-ordinator, Surrey Arts Caroline Jackman work to support local artists and organisations, whilst developing activities and projects accessible for all in Surrey.

Charlotte Gardiner, Community Development Arts Officer for Waverley Borough Council (Arts) Charlotte Gardiner is the Community Arts Development Officer for Waverley Borough Council, which actively supports the arts though its own service and its partners. Waverley delivers a wide range of projects in the community and provides financial and in-kind support to a range of cultural organisations.

Kate Radcliffe, Visual Arts Coordinator at South Hill Park Art Centre, South Hill Park Kate Ratcliffe graduated from Wimbledon College of Art London, in 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting. She has exhibited her work regionally and in London and made the move into arts management through an internship at South Hill Park.

Samantha Robertson, Ceramics Artists in Residence, South Hill Park Samantha Robertson has over a decade of experience refining her practice, teaching and exhibiting her work internationally; she has previously been commissioned by the V&A. Samantha worked as a ceramics technician at UCA Farnham before commencing her Residency at the Arts Centre.

Amy Collins, Craft & Exhibitions Officer, Farnham Maltings, Farnham Maltings Amy Collins joined Farnham Maltings in November 2009 co-ordinating the seasonal workshops and co-organising maltings’ annual events including unravel, a festival of knitting and festival of crafts. She also looks after shop maltings, a craft and vintage store that opened in July 2010.

Colin Mills, Photographer Photographer shooting fine art and other disciplines for thirty years.

Emmeline Hastings, Artist Emmeline Hastings graduated 2009 with a first class degree in 3D Design Metalwork and Jewellery, UCA. Since then have been developing my work and business with good success.

Working from a London-based workshop in mixed media and metals, creating contemporary jewellery and sculpture. Emmeline work has won awards and combines unusual and contrasting materials in a process to create contemporary wearable objects. She is inspired by the visualisation of sound waves, music and related natural phenomena.

Jonathan Parsons, Artist, Writer and Lecturer Jonathan Parsons is an artist, writer and lecturer active since 1990. He came to prominence in 1997 when his dissected map sculpture Carcass (1994) was selected for inclusion in the notorious Sensation exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, which toured to Berlin and New York. Recent exhibitions include: The Art of Mapping (TAG Fine Arts, London), Abigail Reynolds & Jonathan Parsons: A Dialogue on Landscape & Constable (Salisbury Arts Centre), Waldweben (Kasteel Schuurlo, Belgium), and the Jerwood Sculpture Prize (Jerwood Space, London). He has taught Fine Art at numerous Higher Education Institutions around the country and is currently visiting lecturer in Fine Art at UCA, Farnham. His work is represented in public collections in the UK and private collections around the world.
