Welcome to this special issue of Aksa News, celebrating our 25th anniversary! We’re proud to have reached this landmark and you can read about Aksa’s history on page 4 and see a photo of some of our very first tenants! This edition is jam-packed with lots of great community stories and events that have been going on over the summer. Thanks to everyone who got involved in Summertime Adventures – you can read more about it and see your pictures on pages 12-13. Two of our residents were lucky enough to be recognised at awards ceremonies too. You can hear their stories on pages 16-17. There’s been some great work going on in your neighbourhoods too: loads of gardening and growing vegetables; young people busy with the A Team and Oldham Coliseum Theatre; and events funded through our Community Investment Fund. As usual, there’s a recipe to try out and some puzzles to keep you busy as the winter nights

draw in. Find out ‘What’s on’ on page 23 – especially if you need help getting into work and remember, our new phone number is 0161 331 2525. Take care as the colder weather starts - stay warm and safe and we hope you enjoy the winter festivities.

History of Aksa As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we look back on how Aksa Homes first started… Aksa in days gone by Aksa registered with the Housing Corporation in 1990. Originally known as Oldham Muslim Association, its name changed to Aksa following the merger with Bury-based Dar-ul Aman Housing Association in 1995.

known and respected organisation. We are one of only two BME developing landlords in the region. In November 2005, we joined New Charter Group and being part of a larger company, meant we have the ability to get the best price on maintenance work, deliver quality social housing and development programmes and partner with other organisations to better support our customers. It also means we can take on bigger challenges and help more people in our communities. Nowadays, Aksa continues to work in your neighbourhoods to improve where you live. Over the past few years, we’ve been working on your neighbourhood plans – individual promises for each area to improve health, the environment and people’s lives.

Aksa on Stage! Residents and staff shine at national housing event In partnership with Oldham Coliseum Theatre, we opened the HACT House Party with a showcase telling the story of our partnership work. HACT is an organisation that helps promote ideas and innovation in social housing and their House Party event runs alongside one of the biggest events in UK housing in Manchester each June. Through our partnership with the theatre, we are giving residents opportunities they

may not otherwise have and using performing arts to help build stronger communities and get people into work. The performance was a reflection on the people who took part in the Teaching Theatre programme and told the story of our partnership, all set to Bollywood themed music. Residents and staff took part and we got some fantastic feedback on the performance from many people, including housing professionals.

Want to get involved? We now have the opportunity for residents aged 16-24, who are not in education or employment to join the new teaching theatre programme at Oldham Coliseum which started in September.

This is a one year programme and has 100% success rates with people going on to gain employment. If you’re interested to find out more, please contact us.

Summer Slam Over the summer, Oldham Coliseum Theatre also hosted our SummerSlam event where the theatre opened its doors to Aksa residents for a fun and interactive day. Families had a fantastic day out, full of activities and it gave them the chance to go behind the scenes.

Don’t forget that as an Aksa resident, you can also benefit from reduced priced theatre tickets at just £7.50 each! Cut out your voucher on pg 2 of this newsletter.

Aksa A-Team Working from the ground up Hi Ashley, no worries. What have you been up to?

Sounds really good. Wish I’d come along now.

Hi Shabana, sorry not texted you back, been busy with the A-team and the Groundwork project on our estate.

We’ve all been growing vegetables and herbs together out on our streets and making posters and t-shirts to help stop people vandalising our estate and throwing litter.

Yeah, it’s been really good and there’s been loads of us getting together - children, young people and older residents too – all ages. Do you know if they’re going to be doing work in other areas? So far it’s been Allama Iqbal Road, Jinnah Close and Cottage Gardens but I think Oldham North is next. I’ll have to find out, sounds really good.

Definitely and at the end we had an event all together at the Mahdlo Centre in Oldham. It’s been great getting to know our neighbours better, met some great people.

Brill, I’ll see if I can get involved next time.

Aksa Homes has been working with Groundwork to deliver some great activities for young people in the East Oldham area over the summer months, including:

Our big r u o t s u ASB b During the May half-term holidays, Aksa took to the streets of Greater Manchester as part of a bus tour to help tackle antisocial behaviour Antisocial behaviour can significantly impact on people’s lives. We know it’s important to create stronger neighbourhoods where people work together and are kept informed of any incidents to help improve where they live. So we took to the streets in our big blue bus and travelled across Oldham, Bury and Manchester where our staff spoke to lots of residents to help raise awareness of antisocial behaviour.

We also linked up with Oldham Coliseum to develop street theatre performances about neighbourhood issues - a creative way to help get messages across to the wider community. Fun activities were really enjoyed by families and we joined with local councils, the fire service, the police and officers to run football skills sessions, outdoor activities and improve community safety.

Transforming

den r a g t e e r t S Bignor

We have been working with residents from Bignor Street, Manchester to improve the communal area and security for the flats. Work has been ongoing since last year and now you can see a huge difference in how the area looks. After talking to residents, it was agreed that people wanted to see better security for the block of flats and make better use of the garden. New electronic gates have been fitted and an intercom system is on the main gate of the flats. The garden is taking shape with new planters for residents to grow fruit and vegetables in.

Garden competition winners - Kurt Evans & Ben

Kurt Evans, a tenant of Bignor Street has really tackled the garden and made real improvements. Kurt also successfully secured funding through the Community Investment Fund and this money is being put to good use. The garden area is now being enjoyed by residents who can look out of their window to a lovely view and also cook and eat vegetables grown in the garden. The garden won Best Communal Garden in this year’s garden competition and you can see all the results on page 8. Not only has the project transformed the look of the area, it’s also helped tackle any antisocial behaviour issues in the block and given residents a space to relax in and feel safe. Watch this space for more developments and photos; we’ll keep you updated!

Why not Give it a Go?

Aksa tenants set up their own businesses and Give it a Go! Over the past six months, Aksa has been running a business start-up project – Give it a Go, at the Launch Pad in Oldham. We’ve been working in partnership with Upturn Enterprise Limited, Blue Orchid Regenda, Contour Housing,

Oldham Business Leadership group and Oldham Council. Local people interested in setting up their own businesses have been given support and advice, meeting with a specialist advisor each week to help them.

Nusrat’s journey Aksa Tenants’ Panel member, Nusrat Bibi has realised her dream through Give it a Go by launching her own business: Yummy Tummy Catering Company.

Nusrat proudly showcasing her food at the Launch into Business event

Nusrat regularly came along to the Aksa job club and received weekly oneto-one support. As a highly competent home cook, Nusrat was keen to start a catering business and even had food hygiene qualifications too, but she had no experience of running a company and had limited funds to get going.

for the support the Give it a Go project has given me in starting my business from home. I could not have done it without the support and guidance I received from this project as it gave me the confidence to do things which I thought I would not be able to do. So thank you for everything.”

Through Give it a Go, Nusrat was supported to write a business plan and a marketing strategy was developed and put into action. She was also given help with sourcing suppliers and calculating costings.

In her first week of trading, Nusrat catered for the Launch into business event at the Launch Pad!

Danielle’s story I was a single parent and hadn’t worked for a while. I wanted to look for work

Danielle at the work club

but didn’t know where to start and then I heard about Aksa’s Stepping into Work programme.

programme, but felt more confident as I had gained experience and had some work history behind me.

I went along to a work club and signed up and they helped me create a CV and I started looking for jobs. I got help with completing applications and was invited to a few interviews which the Aksa team helped me practice for.

I applied for a job in a health centre which would be ideal as it was close to my children’s school and was flexible. I was invited for interview and then a second interview and received a call and was told that I was successful! I was so happy, the job was ideal.

I was successful with one job - a short term position, but a great opportunity to build on my experience and confidence. Then I was back on the Stepping into Work

I am thankful to all that have supported me with my journey and helped me develop to where I am - in a job I enjoy.

Ifrat volunteering at the Bean Good Café

Ifrat’s story I have been an Aksa tenant for many years. I had no experience or knowledge of working and was introduced to the Stepping into Work programme through attending English classes. My English was very minimal and I lacked confidence as I had been a mother and housewife for many years. I started to go along to the work club where I was welcomed and given help to make a CV. I was shown how to apply for and search for jobs. I was so eager to build on my experience and confidence but my language was a barrier. The Aksa team spoke to me about

volunteering and offered me an opportunity to volunteer at a coffee shop to help me improve my spoken English. It was a great opportunity as the volunteering allowed us to swap skills; the manager would support me with my English and I would share my cooking skills!

facebook.com/aksahomes

@AksaHomes

I was so happy as this was a volunteering opportunity where I was doing something I enjoyed – cooking. I go along every week and can see my English slowly improving and I really look forward to it each week. I can’t thank Aksa enough for helping me get this opportunity and supporting me along this journey.

Tenants recognised for great community spirit at national awards Two of our tenants have been recognised for their outstanding work in their communities.

Sajad Hussain from Cotton Mill Crescent, Oldham was shortlisted as a finalist for the Housing Heroes award for Inspirational Tenant of the Year.

The ceremony was held on 22nd June in Manchester and Sajad went along with the Aksa team to mark the occasion. Sajad has been active in the neighbourhood, providing

16

support with various maintenance and cleaning jobs for more vulnerable tenants. He’s been the voice of the community, helping with research questionnaires and getting involved in the Stepping into Work programme. He’s shared his knowledge and life experiences with other residents of how he has gained confidence and always makes

time to visit those who need help and support. His presence has had a positive impact in the community he lives in, getting others involved, helping shape Aksa’s services as a Tenant Panel member and as a voice for his neighbourhood. Being shortlisted was a big achievement for Sajad and great for him to be recognised in these prestigious awards.

Carol Morrison, a tenant from Cotton Mill Crescent, Oldham won the Neighbourhood Champion award at the Fusion awards in Blackburn in May. Carol has been an Aksa tenant since 2006. She keeps busy with her four children and nine grandchildren, but this doesn’t stop her from devoting much of her time to making a difference to her neighbourhood. She is always a helping hand and loves supporting her neighbours. As a well-respected member of the community, Carol gets involved with the Neighbourhood Network,

regularly volunteers and has been instrumental in developing a ‘neighbourhood agreement’. As a Tenant Panel member, her commitment to making a difference has gone from strength to strength, even though her own health hasn’t always been great. Nevertheless, she always manages to be full of energy and has a welcoming smile.

Congratulations to both Sajad and Carol on these fantastic achievements and thanks to you both for the commitment you show within your communities.

Franklin Close residents planting raspberries

With First Choice Homes, Contour Housing and other partners, Aksa has dedicated funding to health and wellbeing projects across the Westwood and Coldhurst areas of Oldham. We held a number of pop-up sessions on Franklin, Clarkwell and Shipla Close in Oldham from June to September. Tenants took part in the activities, alongside Alison, Community Food Inspirer and her team from Incredible Aqua Garden. The project aimed to promote health in the community and encourage people to grow their own fruit and vegetables which have now been shared with friends and neighbours. Classes were also held on different cooking techniques including ideas using less oil to help with healthier diets and lifestyles. For more information, contact Tanuja on 0161 331 2525 or email info@aksahomes.co.uk

Community Investment Fund Residents applied for funding to make their summer dreams come true Over the summer, Aksa tenants applied to the Community Investment Fund to transform open spaces and plan a day trip that brought the community together.

Samantha Henry, a resident at Peakdale Avenue, organised a trip for over 50 Aksa residents to Southlakes Zoo. The trip helped families get to know each other and provided an affordable and memorable family day out. Samantha paid the transport costs for all residents herself.

Sharon Maver, an Ashton tenant transformed an unused communal space at Uxbridge Street to develop a Serenity Garden. This new relaxing space is ideal for people to meet with friends and neighbours.

If you’ve got an idea for a project that would make a difference to your community, why not apply to Aksa’s Community Investment Fund?

How to apply for the Aksa Homes Community Investment Fund in four easy steps:

1 2

Get together with three or more of your neighbours

3

Download an application form from www.aksahomes.co.uk/ neighbourhoods-and-communities/ community-investment-fund

4

Submit your application form

facebook.com/aksahomes

If you have an idea and want to help out your neighbourhood, you can apply for a small grant of up to £1,000 for your community project.

How will we assess your application? Our Neighbourhood Network members will review your idea and if it’s approved, we will fund and support the project.
