Welcome to your latest magazine We’ve got lots of great articles for you in this magazine with lots of news about up and coming events and stories on the great things that have been going on in your neighbourhoods. We’ve got a section on changes to benefits, with some really important messages about rent increase, universal credit and getting help with the ‘Bedroom Tax’. Read more on pages 4-5. Many of you will be pleased to know that the results of this year’s LoveYour Garden competition are in! We were really impressed with all of the submissions; take a look on page 11. And as always we have lots of information on activities going on around your neighbourhoods in the coming months – from new work clubs to IT classes.

A job well done! Three Tenant Panel members took part in training to help us with our ‘older people’s research project’. This helped us to understand older residents’ needs and how we can help them. The hard work, skills and experience that Kiran Sonya, Ms Hussain and Johura Khatun gained during this time helped them to get jobs at market research company Callerz Ltd. Their first piece of work was to complete the Aksa tenants annual survey. They spoke to nearly 150 tenants' over one week about our services - well done Kiran, Ms Hussan and Johura!

Changes to ‘Bedroom Tax’ reminder The Government's 'Bedroom Tax' has been in place since 1st April and many of you may have found it more difficult to manage your money. If you have one or more 'spare' bedrooms, your Housing Benefit may have been reduced. Here are a few pointers to remind you what the changes mean and how we can help you.
You MAY see changes if: ● You are 16 to 62 years old ● You get Housing Benefit, even if you only get a small amount e.g if you’re working ● You are sick or disabled
If you’re affected, you’ll have noticed a reduction in the amount of Housing Benefit you get. Remember, it’s now up to you to pay this extra money every week. If you’re worried about being able to pay your rent, ask for advice now.
You WON’T be affected if: ● You live in a one bedroom flat or bedsit ● You or your partner is old enough to receive Pension Credit (this is currently around 61 years) ● You don’t have a spare bedroom For more details of what the Government says is a ‘spare bedroom’, take a look at the ‘changes to your benefits’ leaflet on the welfare reform section of www.aksahomes.co.uk

Every Thursday morning we have a rent officer at the Aksa offices ready to speak to you about your account, arrears or any other issues to do with your rent. Just pop along between 10am and Noon.
benefits Benefit changes know-how: Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) You may be entitled to a DHP from the council if you receive Housing Benefit or Council Tax Support, but are struggling to pay the rest of your rent yourself. Your local council decides who should be given the payments. The council will usually take into account any special circumstances that are causing you financial difficulty, e.g if: ● You have to pay child maintenance or legal costs ● Your heating costs are high as you spend a lot of time at
home due to sickness or disability ● You pay a lot of travel costs to get to a doctor or hospital or you care for a relative or friend ● You’re likely to become homeless if a payment is not made Please note, a DHP can’t be paid if your Housing Benefit has reduced to recover an overpayment or because other benefits have been reduced. To apply, you’ll need to fill in a DHP application form.You can get this by phoning or visiting the
council or downloading it from your council’s website. As well as filling in the form you will need to supply details of all your income and outgoings.
Rent Increase If you receive your benefits through Universal Credit (i.e all your benefits come together as one payment), you must tell the Department of Work and Pensions about your rent increase as soon as you receive your increase notice. They will not backdate this information and it’s your responsibility to inform them.
The Universal Tour bus has been! The Universal Tour bus hit the streets to talk to Aksa tenants about the benefit changes and to offer help and support to those affected. During the day the SWAT team visited Ashton, Oldham, Bury and Manchester.
We had a great response and were able to explain to residents how the changes may affect them and take details to follow up with more support and advice. The children were entertained with face painting and balloons; there were lots of Batmans, Spidermans and butterflies walking around our neighbourhoods by the end of the day!

Aksa Homes Community Investment Fund
We’re committed to helping residents take pride in their areas. The Community Investment Fund is a pot of money that groups can apply for to help fund local projects.
We want tenants to use the funding to make their community better by setting up projects to: ● Improve health ● Create work and training opportunities

Seeing it in action The Werneth & Freehold Community Development project was sponsored £1000 by the Community Investment Fund. This helped pay for a Woman’s Development Worker in Werneth. This worker, Kiran Majid, will help support women who face social
problems like domestic violence and forced marriage as well as those suffering from depression or stress. Kiran will hold lots of different classes to help women develop their skills and raise their self-esteem. 235 women are already registered to attend the community centre. The Werneth & Freehold Community Development project is run from the community centre at 14 Tamworth Street,Werneth. The women’s project is run on Thursdays from 10 am - 12.30pm.

Five-a-side fun In May, children from Aksa and Great Places Housing put their best foot forward and took part in a 5-a-side football tournament.
More than 100 people turned out to support the two teams that took part. The children played during May half term on the pitch at Tudor Street, Coppice. Around 60 players tried their hand at becoming the next Wayne Rooney but only one team from each category could be crowned champions;
Coppice United won for the under 16s and Ultimate Team came top in the under 11s. Well done to everyone who took part!

Your Youth Panel needs YOU! We want to set up aYouth Panel to help young people in our neighbourhoods get involved in the community and have a say on how we deliver our services. Over the summer holidays young Aksa tenants have taken part in sports competitions and games, carried out a charity bag packing day at Sainsbury’s and planted a flower bed in one of our Oldham neighbourhoods, Armitage Close. We want to continue their great work but we need your help to do it!
If you’re aged between 12 and 16 years old and are interested in helping to transform your neighbourhood, get in touch! You’d need to be available once a month after school and one full day in the school holidays. There’s also a reward for anyone who takes part. A step in the right direction. Our Stepping Into Work Clubs are now open! We have been running the Stepping Into Work programme, offering free support to access training, create your CV, search for jobs, prepare for interviews and much more.
Now we’re celebrating the opening of our Stepping Into Work hubs in each of our neighbourhoods! At the beginning of September we worked with Oldham Work Club Network, Great Places Housing Group,The Waterloo Centre, Bury Council and New Charter Housing Trust Group to launch our new work clubs. A BIG lunch for tenants
The new Tenants Association in Westwood and Hathershaw held a Big Lunch in June, with fun for all the family! Tenants organised the day with help from the Community Investment Fund and brought the whole community together. There were lots of activities for everyone to enjoy including a bouncy castle, a colouring competition, henna art, face painting for children and information on the new Tenants’ Association. And a Big Lunch wouldn’t be complete without food from around the world for everyone to enjoy!

Get involved! Westwood and Hathershaw have formed new tenants’ groups, and you can too. Aksa Homes offers a wide range of opportunities for residents to get involved in services. As part of our Neighbourhood Plans we have started two new Tenants’ Associations in Westwood and Hathershaw in Oldham. Tenants’ Associations meet regularly to discuss things that matter to you; from ways to make neighbourhoods better to organising fun activities for everyone to enjoy.

Love Your Garden
Competition winners LoveYour Garden is a competition for tenants who do a great job of looking after their gardens. This year’s winners have been busy getting their garden looking bright and colourful, making their neighbourhoods look great by doing so. The competition was judged by Georgina Nolan, Project Team Leader. My confidence has grown since I started volunteering, and I recently got a full time job working in a children’s centre and school.
Johura has volunteered on the Tenant Panel for almost two years. Johura started to get involved when her Project Officer noticed that she was a good organiser and asked her if she would become the secretary for the Glodwick Residents’ Associaton.
The mum of six tells her story here... Since I started getting involved back in 2011, I have felt privileged to be a part of the team. Through the Tenant Panel I have done lots of training including learning how to take minutes, presentation skills, confidence and assertiveness and report writing. I also helped with a research project on older people in Oldham. During this time I spoke to lots of different people and now the research that I helped with is being used to help Aksa develop the right services for older people in the area. I feel privileged to be a part of such an inspirational team, I feel like I have
a real insight into how Aksa works I have gained so much from being and how it is managed now. We learn involved.We all help each other and together we are a great team! about what’s planned and act as a voice for tenants. Volunteering has helped keep me active and has developed my skills while I am a full time mum. My whole family even gets involved! My children often attend events and my boys’ recently took part in the football match. I really look forward to attending all of the things that are on offer and encourage my community to join in too. My confidence has grown since I started volunteering, and I recently got a full time job working in a children’s centre and school. I would definitely recommend volunteering to others; you can discover skills you don’t even realise you have, meet new people and gain experience - all of this can lead to paid work.

Putting a stop to anti-social behaviour Anti-social behaviour affects many people in different ways. Anti-social behaviour is when someone causes nuisance or annoyance to an individual or a community. Examples of anti-social behaviour can be playing loud music, being verbally abusive or damaging or defacing other people’s property. Aksa Homes has had five complaints of anti-social behaviour between April and June and all five cases have been investigated and successfully resolved.
What should I do if I am a victim of anti-social behaviour?
You can report anti-social behaviour to us over the phone, by email or in person at any of our neighbourhood drop ins. If a crime has been committed please always contact the police - 999 in an emergency, or 101 in a non-emergency. Aksa Homes treats all reports of anti-social behaviour confidentially. Once you have reported the anti-social behaviour to us, we will arrange for you to meet with us to discuss your complaint and agree an action plan to resolve the problem.
Maria’s Story Maria has been an Aksa Homes tenant for years and never had any problems until a new neighbour moved on to her street who held loud parties every night. Maria and her family were affected by this. They were unable to sleep and it began to have an impact on her children’s school work. Maria came to one of our drop in centres and asked us for help. She met with her neighbourhood co-ordinator who discussed the ways they could help. Together they agreed an action plan - Maria agreed to keep a diary of further incidents and her neighbourhood co-ordinator agreed to speak to her neighbour. Soon after the parties stopped the family was able to get back in their old routine. Maria was very pleased and her children began to do well again at school. Maria said: “I wish I’d have contacted Aksa Homes sooner. They met with me soon after I reported my complaint and they kept me updated. I didn’t want to approach my neighbour as I was not sure how they’d react but Aksa Homes did an excellent job and the parties stopped immediately. I would not hesitate to report anti-social behaviour in the future.”

Join us for a journey back in time to bygone eras and enjoy some good old fashioned entertainment! Then, move into the 21st Century for an update on your neighbourhood plans. There’ll be FREE entertainment, refreshments and food. As well as all the fun of the fair, staff will be on hand offering
