Welcome Welcome to New Charter and to our booklet about Retirement Housing. We provide safe, comfortable homes for rent. Some of our accommodation is designed specifically for older people. We own and manage around 14,500 homes in Tameside which include 22 Schemes and 1 Extra Care Scheme. The map at the back of this booklet shows their location and will help you make the right home choice.

Our retirement housing for rent is ideal for people who want to enjoy their lives, free from worries of insecurity or home maintenance. It also provides peace of mind if you are concerned about your health and would feel better knowing there’s someone to call on - just in case. If you are over 60, whatever your current circumstances, whether you rent or own your present home, you can apply to live in one of our schemes. You do not need to be living in Tameside, you will have your own self contained apartment, which is designed with old people in mind. Your home will have central heating, a fitted kitchen and bathroom, and the support of a Scheme Manager. The Community Response Service will cover emergency calls out-of-hours via the speech alarm in each property, 365 days a year. We have electronic door entry systems which provide safety and security in each scheme, giving you peace of mind and making it a ‘home from home’. You will find a happy, sociable environment where you can join in activities when you feel like company and enjoy your privacy when you don’t. Our staff receive ongoing professional training to ensure a high standard of service delivery. On site there will be a fully trained Scheme Manager to co-ordinate any support needs required and liaise with our Repairs Service on your behalf. The Scheme Manager will co-ordinate weekly social activities. This will vary between schemes to reflect the interests of the residents. All tenants are invited to take part. You are welcome to contact New Charter to arrange a visit to one of our schemes to help you make an informed choice about this type of housing.

How to apply To apply for accommodation, you will need to complete an Application for Housing form. These are available from any of our home and community hubs in Ashton, hyde, denton or Stalybridge or you can pick up a copy from any of our schemes. You can also telephone 0161 331 2000 and ask for an application pack which we will post to you, or if yourself or your family have access to a computer you can complete an online application form via the New Charter website www.newcharter.co.uk. It is important that you complete the form as fully as possible. If there is information missing, we may not be able to register you. If you need help to fill in the form, please ask. If there are medical issues which you want us to consider when assessing your housing application please ask for a separate form which will let you explain these issues in more detail. please remember, some schemes are more popular than others and there may be a waiting list. It is best to open up your options and select as many schemes as possible. If you are unsure about anything, we are happy to help and give you our expert advice. Eligibility Criteria We welcome applications from single people or couples aged 60 and over, or between 55 and 60, if there is a medical need. Our staff will be happy to speak to you about this.We treat each application equally regardless of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, gender, sexual orientation or marital status. You may apply to us wherever you live at the moment, whether you are currently renting or own your own home. Each application will be assessed individually, but our retirement housing may not be the right choice for you if you have serious medical problems that mean you are not able to attend to your own personal care needs.

Role of the Scheme Manager Each scheme is managed by a fully trained member of staff called a Scheme Manager. They are on hand to offer you advice and support when you need it. They will deal with any emergencies during normal working hours. They are supported and assisted by a comprehensive team of other professionals. The community response service will cover emergency out-of-hours calls via the speech alarm in each property. This service is available 365 days a year.
