W E LCO ME

from the Founder & Artistic Director

As a society, we have hit the long overdue reset button on health, well-being and social justice. Together we are re-writing the stories of our lives with determined ferocity. The winds of change are howling and art must help lead the way.

To that end, I pondered how that could even be possible given our current circumstance. Like theatres all across the land, we are not permitted to open our doors. Gathering in real time to bear witness is the very essence of what we do. Now, that simple act of community is in and of itself perilous. Thankfully, we theatre makers are a resourceful resilient lot. We are wired to fight the good fight and like the legendary Don Quixote are unafraid to tilt against the windmills. It is in that spirit that In Good Company was born. We began to muse from our own backyards - literally. What happens when a small theatre company is unexpectedly shut down during a health pandemic? Could the daily barrage of changing circumstance in their world be told as a soap opera of epic proportions – a kind of collision of in the moment fact and fiction? How about doing it as an episodic podcast? But we’ve never done one of those before. So, what, let’s do it anyway. We’ll figure it out as we go. In record time we assembled a writer’s room of five brilliant scribes. Then a few more calls and we hired seven very versatile actors and then set them up with recording equipment in their homes. The production process navigated remotely by our fearless Technical Director, Production Manager, and then expertly mastered by our ever-astonishing Sound Engineer/Designer. While we were creating the episodes, the world suffered another seismic blow. The brutal murder of George Floyd. That horrific incident catalyzed our nation. It was a moment not to be ignored. The characters of In Good Company, had to face it along with the rest of us. Our writers took the real-life prompt and episodes were written accordingly. This ten-episode podcast does not aim to solve social ills. It couldn’t even if it tried. Our characters, flaws and all, are simply doing their best to understand and cope with life as it unfolds around them. They do so with curiosity, fear, sorrow, bravery and even humor when it is possible. When all is said and done, one thing is for certain about the characters who inhabit the Bay City Theatre Company, they have each other. Listen carefully, you are In Good Company.

W E LCO ME

from the Executive Director

First and foremost, if you are reading this program and listening to our podcast, we hope you and yours are well and safe. Thanks for tuning in and welcome to NCTC Cyberworld! The unprecedented events of the last few months have proved to me that the lyric “there’s no people like show people” is absolutely true! I mean, we all know theatre people are fun at parties, but if you are in a really tight spot they are downright AMAZING! Our artists, artisans and staff have met our converging crises head on, and are tackling new modes and new material with determination, innovation, and optimism. Not to mention talent. We are seizing the opportunity presented by our dark stages and online productions to reach a broader audience than ever before, unencumbered by restrictions of time and geography. In order to keep this new programing as accessible as possible to everyone, we are offering our fall lineup of podcasts and radio plays for free. We are putting the art out there and hoping you will find it interesting and engaging. If you do, please throw some money in the hat. NCTC was about to celebrate its 39th year when everything changed. The comedian Jack Benny may have wanted to stay 39 forever, but we are setting our sights a little higher: we want to weather these interesting times and keep the art alive, well into 40 and beyond. We will need your help. If you like what you hear, share this podcast with a friend…or two…or seventy. If you have the means, please consider making a donation online at nctcsf.org/donate These courageous artists need your support so NCTC can continue to uplift the many voices of the LGBTQ+ community and be a place that respects, honors and welcomes all, both now and when we all come together again in our theatres. We can’t wait to see you! Thanks again for joining us.
