from the Founder & Artistic Director
Playwright Philip Dawkins is back in the house. A few seasons ago NCTC featured the triumphant regional premiere of The Homosexuals and we are now fortunate to bring his new romantic comedy Le Switch to San Francisco as part of our 2017-18 Season. The legalization of gay marriage across the land remains a cause for celebration among many and for others, I’ve discovered, not so much. Le Switch tackles generational divides and matrimonial ambivalence head on. Meet David, an emotionally blocked gay man, who is afraid to take the nuptial leap. He is quite happy with things the way they are thank you very much. Who needs the hetero-normative institution of marriage anyway? It’s fraught with complications, ceremonial excess, and binding contracts that can often lead to heartbreak. Those opinions are all fine and good – until you fall in love with someone who holds the tradition of matrimony as the ultimate expression of love and unity. Then it’s time to take a second look at what it means to be committed, married, and queer. Philip Dawkins is a master at tackling intricate social constructs. He not only zeros in on the gravitas of life’s situations but he manages to do so with stellar wit and delicious surprise – he is a clever storyteller. No matter what your feelings are about marriage, Le Switch urges us all to simply listen to our hearts and our minds will follow. Happy fall everyone!

Playwright Philip Dawkins is one of “Chicago theater’s brightest talents” (Chicago Tribune) whose plays have been produced throughout the country and the world. NCTC produced Dawkins’ incredibly successful play The Homosexuals in its 2013-14 Season and is thrilled to welcome his “delightfully fun” (Time Out Chicago) play Le Switch this season. Dawkins’ new play Charm received its world premiere in the fall of 2015, produced by Northlight Theatre and presented at the Steppenwolf Garage, and will receive its New York premiere at MCC next season. Other work includes Miss Marx: or the Involuntary Side Effect of Living (Strawdog Theatre), which won the Joseph Jefferson Award for Best New Work, as well as Failure: A Love Story, which also received a Joseph Jefferson Nomination for New Work after its world premiere at Victory Gardens Theater. This interview gives an inside look at Dawkins’ process in writing the wickedly smart play, Le Switch.
CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
F E ATURE CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Your plays are produced across the Many of your plays examine the LGBT experience today. What was the impetus for Le Switch, which tackles the new role of marriage in that experience? I took up this play on a dare. A producer friend of mine challenged me to write a play about marriage equality that took place in NYC. But, I had zero interest in writing a play about Marriage Equality or about New York. So, of course, I said yes. For the CHALLENGE! I interviewed lots of people (in Chicago, in NYC, in Montreal). Straight people, queer people, single people, poly people. I wanted a full spectrum of experiences in terms of politics and romance. My interest was mostly in how we, as queer people, maintain our oppositional identity when our most recent human rights gains have been mainstream, capitalist acceptance? I’m not anti-marriage - some of my best friends are married - but when I list all that I find beautiful and strong about our big, sexy rainbow community, marriage doesn’t even make the top 50. It’s been a wild ride, and what I love about the characters is that I agree with all of them.
Le Switch tackles the subject of marriage from many perspectives. Is there one you feel rings truest for you? Frank’s is my voice. Copied straight from my throat and pasted into this play. If Frank says it, I probably agree with it. And there are bits and pieces of other characters’ viewpoints that feel right to me, but if we’re talking entire character? Frank, c’est moi.
country - and you’ve had multiple productions of Le Switch. What’s it like seeing productions of your work, with which you may not have been involved? Honestly, that’s one of my favorite parts of being a playwright. Seeing what other communities do with the stories I’ve written is fascinating to me. I almost always learn something about the play when I see a new community put it up. It’s that moment of, “Ohhhhhh, so that’s how you do it.” I definitely felt that way about NCTC’s production of The Homosexuals. Aside from being very happy with the production--which I was!-- I also learned a lot about San Francisco and San Francisco’s view of the Midwest. And I have to ask, have you had a similar love affair with Montreal? Yes. It’s time I came clean. I’ve been with Chicago now for about 20 years, but I’ve been cheating on him with Montreal for about six years. It’s real. We’re in this. Anyone got a Montreal house they want to loan to a poor, city-smitten playwright? You’ve so many irons in the fire and plays around the country. What else can audiences be on the lookout for across the country? In January, I have a play called The Burn opening at Steppenwolf for Young Audiences which uses The Crucible as a launching pad to explore the struggles of today’s youth as they navigate forming identities in a plethora of online and real-time spheres. In April, my play, The Gentleman Caller about the relationship between Tennessee Williams and William Inge premiers at Raven Theater in Chicago. 2017-2018 SEASON NCTC 13

PR OF ILE S NORMAN ABRAMSON & DAVID BEERY (Season Producers) In a diverse society, it is important that subcultures record their own history, as well as enriching the larger culture. In its support of LGBTQ playwrights, New Conservatory Theater is an active participant in sharing those voices with all. This singular view is one that makes NCTC important for the two of us. As it reaches a wider and younger audience, these artistic visions do become part of our history and enrich the arts. It is an invaluable contribution.
JEFF MALLOY & DEAN SHIBUYA (Executive Producers) have been integrally involved with the SF arts scene for more than 16 years. Jeff, former General Manager of the American Conservatory Theater, is now with the Heising-Simons Foundation. Dean is an architect and scenic designer and has designed sets for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, A.C.T.’s Young Conservatory, Theatre Rhinoceros, our own NCTC, and opera and theatre companies in Thailand, Finland and Sweden. Together they produced Carol Channing’s one-woman show in San Francisco and Honolulu. They are thrilled to be a part of NCTC’s community and the exciting artistic work of this incredible company!
