W E LCO ME
from the Founder & Artistic Director
Originally, The Law of Attraction by Patricia Milton
was scheduled to have its world premiere at NCTC this season. Instead, thanks to the playwright’s magic pen, it joins our repertoire in a reimagined radio play version for online broadcast. Another testament of resilience and forward momentum offered by theatres across the land during the time of COVID-19. No matter what the circumstance, art and artists find a way – creativity endures.
Learning how to make theatre remotely is an adventure. While it does not replace the miracle that is real time and real space collaboration, it provides an opportunity to keep storytelling churning. Our imaginations need to remain engaged especially during tumultuous times. It helps us cope and find the strength to continue. Even more so if a dash of human folly can be part of the journey. A chance to laugh a little – something we all desperately need right now. The Law of Attraction takes us full throttle into the madness of the multizillion dollar self-help publishing industry, but with a definite comic edge. With their road maps toward better living in hand, the story takes our characters careening down life’s highway searching for the ever elusive on and off ramps to personal satisfaction. Everyone is in the race towards fulfillment before the fuel tanks of their hearts hit empty. This is a time when we are all looking for answers to so many questions. The need for love, respect, healthful living, and unity looms large. Often times we gaze so far inward to resolve these questions that we miss the really important conversations that we should be having with one another. The queries about the things that matter most like happiness, health, and wellbeing fall by the wayside. We become estranged from the collective human condition as well as ourselves. It becomes harder and harder to steer clear of divisiveness and aggression in the existential playbook. But goodwill can prevail. The Law of Attraction suggests that the best guide for living is found in the smiles we share and how graciously we turn the page.

W E LCO ME
from the Executive Director
Welcome to The Law of Attraction! We are so glad you are taking the time to join us for this wonderful piece of theatrenow-radio-play. We have been looking forward to sharing this work with you since we first commissioned it, which is why we adapted it as a radio drama – it was simply too good to put on the shelf until we could stage it. It’s been an interesting learning curve creating a show for your ears only. We appreciate you coming along on the adventure as we go back to an art form that was ubiquitous nearly 100 years ago. Makes me wonder if the generation raised on radio drama became better listeners! The pandemic has presented us with many challenges, both artistic and logistic. It has also provided a unique opportunity for us to take the time to come together as a staff and take an in depth look at what it means to be a progressive, activist theatre at a time when so many crises are at hand: in particular how do we use the platform we have built to amplify overlooked voices? One place we have started is with a land acknowledgement practice. The full version of our statement is on the opposite page. A shorter version will be incorporated into communications, preshow speeches, meetings and other events going forward. It is a small way to acknowledge the debt we owe to the people who lived on and cared for this land before colonization. For further information about this history please visit our website at www.nctcsf.org/LandAcknowledgment for more resources. I hope you are yours are well and safe. Thanks again for joining us - and enjoy the show!

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT “My grandmother, my mother and I believe that when song, dancing and ceremony stop so does the earth.” - “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods In pursuit of New Conservatory Theatre Center’s ongoing mission to effect personal and societal growth, enlightenment, and change, we’ve learned the importance of acknowledging the original inhabitants of what we now know as San Francisco. We recognize that Ramaytush was the first language of this land as spoken by its original peoples, who are the original stewards and understand the interconnectedness of all things, maintaining harmony with nature since time immemorial. Our theatre is located on stolen land of the Ramaytush Ohlone Peoples, the original peoples of what is now the San Francisco Peninsula, and the greater Bay Area is the ancestral territory of the Miwok, Yokuts, Patwin, and other Ohlone to whom we owe a collective debt. We have directly benefited from being settlers on this land and we are privileged to call it our artistic home. Through our own research and in-depth conversations with local Indigenous Generalized Specialist “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of the many travesties towards Native Americans over hundreds of years that have led to a history of displacement, gentrification, and cultural erasure which informs the context and demographics of our area to this day. Storytelling is the core of theatre. Being unable to gather at NCTC during this time has highlighted how essential it is that we share the story of the land we occupy. This statement is one small step in recognizing the original stewards of this land and paying our respect to these Indigenous communities while educating our patrons, artisans, teachers, and students. More importantly are our actions that follow, which will include but are not limited to: uplifting local Indigenous communities, businesses, and artists without the expectation of reciprocal benefits, offering space and resources to Indigenous organizations, and being inclusive in the stories we tell and how we tell them. Colonization is ongoing and so must our efforts be to engage, repair, and learn EpisodesWe 3 and 4 were you brought tothe you by as an organization. encourage to visit reference links here to better understand the legacy of the Ramaytush Ohlone people and the history of this serving the community since 1890. land. Please join us in acknowledging and honoring their ancestors, their elders, and their communities.

Real Talk with Nikki Meñez
by Andrea Partridge
The first thing you notice about
The Law of Attraction director, Nikki Meñez is her infectious laugh - you can hear it from anywhere in the NCTC basement. The second? Her total comittment to theatre as a form of social activism, a passion which has shaped her ever-evolving career. Nikki has been an integral part of the fabric of NCTC for the last five years, and of the progressive Bay Area theatre at large. She began at NCTC as a teaching artist with the Conservatory program when a parttime position became available with YouthAware, our educational theatre program that tours short productions to schools and helps students and teachers navigate topics that might 6otherwise be difficult to approach
in a classroom setting. From her first interview with Artistic Director Ed Decker for YouthAware, a pipeline was established that would eventually lead to Nikki directing on the mainstage. In the meantime, she says, “having my growth as a human being and a young professional facilitated by NCTC,” allowed her to evolve the program into something she could take real ownership of. Indeed, Nikki’s hard work and vision lead to her becoming the YouthAware Program Director. All the while, Nikki cut her teeth by freelance directing productions at various theatres in the city, including the indie Awesome Theatre (where she also serves as their Casting Director) and notably, a production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights at Custom
Made Theatre. This production solidified and centralized her work’s focus on the connective tissue of relationships and community, a necessary aspect of a show that requires authentically conveying familial, life-long neighborhood closeness among its cast of characters. Nikki’s path to NCTC’s mainstage has been largely intertwined with the circumstances of the pandemic. She Assistant Directed Yilong Liu’s The Book of Mountains & Seas alongside Director Becca Wolf (Casa Valentina, STEVE), a play which only got one preview performance before closing due to San Francisco’s shut down of events in city buildings. Though disappointingly short lived in its run, this experience served as an easing into mainstage direction while she also worked closely with Ed and playwright Patricia Milton on the development of The Law of Attraction, slated for production in the 2020-21 Season. It was a natural choice for Nikki to direct - the production was set to be staged in the intimate Walker theatre and Nikki had already worked with Patricia on a short play festival with 3 Girls Theatre. Additionally, Nikki shared a character’s Filipinx background, her cultural competency would be instrumental in honoring that culture’s representation. Plus, she says, “it’s just funny. The access point of humor and social justice really resonated with me.” As a world premiere with NCTC’s New Voices/New Work program, the theatre has the opportunity to shape the development of the play and respond to the conversations and context of the time. In the complex circumstances of the pandemic and of fervent calls for justice and accountability, a play centering around a well-meaning but naive white woman, making her living selling commercialized feminism in the form of self-help books and talks
Nikki with the cast and crew of YouthAware’s 2020 production of Real Talk
geared towards other well-meaning white women, became fertile ground for delving into these themes more deeply. Not only have current events focused the themes of the show, they have also changed the format. In order to produce the play in the highest quality and safest manner, NCTC has decided to release it as an audio drama. Of course, this created both new opportunities and new challenges. This format necessitates being very specific as to how characters describe themselves and convey personal traits. For example, Natasha, around whom the plot’s central conflict revolves, is a biracial person. Therefore, naming her biracial identification and that she is in an interracial relationship is key to conveying the context of their relationship. “It’s also important to let levity, even on a serious topic, be a part of that experience,” Nikki says. “It lets you build a participatory connection to these characters. There are 4 characters who have completely different lenses through which they view the world. Everybody is bound to identify with someone in this play, and yet, nobody is safe from a joke. Sometimes when you laugh, you don’t quite know if you’re the type of person being laughed at. Sometimes you have to listen a little harder. It opens you up to being even more empathetic towards everyone involved in this story. ”
