from the Founder & Artistic Director

Throughout the ages, and in whatever form, art

has served as a touchstone in our lives. As a reflection of the past or present moment, a guide towards change, and a beacon of optimism, creativity endures. It fights to find its way into the light. Theatres around the world are rising to the challenges we are all facing today. NCTC is no exception, imagining new ways to survive, remaining engaged and raising the bar so that our productions are the best they can be. In truth, those obligations are always at hand for theatremakers - especially for those of us whose purpose is so explicitly mission driven. For your winter enjoyment NCTC presents - A Mighty Queer Virtual Variety Show, a cavalcade of original new work by five extraordinary Bay Area queer artists hosted by the irrepressible drag diva Dusty Pรถrn, on our streaming stage. Directed and curated by the bright rising talent of Richard A. Mosqueda, each performer in this cross-disciplinary entertainment offers their inventive response to the prompt - Hope is Where the Art Is. Each and everyone involved demonstrated a resourceful inspiring resilience in making new work without ever having set foot in the same room together - a digitally structured yet highly collaborative production process that is fearless in its aim to bring joy and wonder to our audiences. It is amazing what is achievable when passion drives us forward. Change comes when no matter the circumstance we raise our voices, celebrate the human spirit, and unite in the mighty possibilities of our potential. As we all look ahead to a more equitable, mindful, and healthy new year, please enjoy these splendidly queer feats of creativity. Now and eternally, hope is where the art is.

W E LCO ME

from the Executive Director

At the risk of dating myself (!) the year I turned old enough to stay up “late” to watch The Ed Sullivan Show with my sisters was a Very Big Deal. Ed will always be associated in my mind with Sunday night family time, stretched out on the rug watching TV. If we were lucky, a large bowl of popcorn was involved. Ed brought a curated series of performances into our living room that we had never seen or even heard of. (To this day I use that guy who spun all those plates as a metaphor for my professional life.) When I learned, as an adult, that Ed Sullivan was a staunch ally of the Civil Rights movement it only enhanced his memory. One thing I have learned from shelter in place is just how much I miss the NCTC family. Seeing all your smiling faces – and meeting new ones! – in our lobby is a joy and pleasure that cannot be equaled on Zoom. We all miss you, and eagerly await the day we can gather again. Thank you so much for keeping us in your hearts until that time. Your messages of encouragement, and generous financial support have kept us going. We are now delighted to present you with another assortment of performances you might not be familiar with, curated by another Ed and a talented director, Richard Mosqueda. My holiday wish for you is some cozy, happy time with family – chosen or otherwise – accompanied by these unique performances. Popcorn optional.*

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT “My grandmother, my mother and I believe that when song, dancing and ceremony stop so does the earth.” - “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods In pursuit of New Conservatory Theatre Center’s ongoing mission to effect personal and societal growth, enlightenment, and change, we’ve learned the importance of acknowledging the original inhabitants of what we now know as San Francisco. We recognize that Ramaytush was the first language of this land as spoken by its original peoples, who are the original stewards and understand the interconnectedness of all things, maintaining harmony with nature since time immemorial. Our theatre is located on stolen land of the Ramaytush Ohlone Peoples, the original peoples of what is now the San Francisco Peninsula, and the greater Bay Area is the ancestral territory of the Miwok, Yokuts, Patwin, and other Ohlone to whom we owe a collective debt. We have directly benefited from being settlers on this land and we are privileged to call it our artistic home. Through our own research and in-depth conversations with local Indigenous Generalized Specialist “Kanyon Coyote Woman” Sayers-Roods, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of the many travesties towards Native Americans over hundreds of years that have led to a history of displacement, gentrification, and cultural erasure which informs the context and demographics of our area to this day. Storytelling is the core of theatre. Being unable to gather at NCTC during this time has highlighted how essential it is that we share the story of the land we occupy. This statement is one small step in recognizing the original stewards of this land and paying our respect to these Indigenous communities while educating our patrons, artisans, teachers, and students. More importantly are our actions that follow, which will include but are not limited to: uplifting local Indigenous communities, businesses, and artists, offering space and resources to Indigenous organizations, and being inclusive in the stories we tell and how we tell them. Colonization is ongoing and so must our efforts be to engage, repair, and learn EpisodesWe 3 and 4 were you brought tothe you by as an organization. encourage to visit reference links here to better understand the legacy of the Ramaytush Ohlone people and the history of this serving the community since 1890. land. Please join us in acknowledging and honoring their ancestors, their elders, and their communities.

D RA M AT U R G Y

Hope Is Where The Art Is During the plague, Shakespeare wrote King Lear. After contracting the Spanish Flu, Edvard Munch painted his iconic Self-Portrait After Spanish Influenza. At the height of the AIDS epidemic, Keith Haring used his distinct artistic voice to raise awareness about the plague raging through our community. When pandemics change our way of life, art is our line of defense against fear, our way of finding hope, even when we can’t join together. Today, our Mighty Queer Virtual Variety Show artists come together and share what hope means to them.

As an artist, hope and art are so intertwined. We’re making something, putting our hands on something to put into the world that reflects our belief, our politics, our hope. Hope is an essential tool for making art.

- Richard A Mosqueda

For me, hope feels like a fullness in my chest, a lightness in my shoulders, a standing more solidly on the ground beneath me and a more embodied presence. - Dusty Pörn

6

Art has always brought me hope. During this pandemic, art has reminded me that it’s not just important that we survive, but it’s important that we know why we should survive, why we matter, why should make it through this. Art helps us remember that.

- Baruch Porras Hernandez

Some of the most amazing art comes out of the greatest difficulties, so it’s hard to get too down when you can be very aware that something great could happen at any moment.

- Joey the Tiger

For me, hope is knowing in your heart that there’s something better. Even in times of grief or chaos, hope is there to be your wings.

- SevanKelee “Lucky 7” Boult

Hope means resiliance in the face of resistance. It means being grateful for the breath that we have next. It can provide us comfort through so many storms, knowing something wonderful is awaiting us if we just take it breath by breath. - SNJV

NCTC is proud to present online theatrical experiences that speak to this moment and provide a much needed sense of community, but it is clear the preservation of our artistic institutions will be up to us. We need your help to ensure that NCTC stays operational and can return to the theatre from a position of strength in the coming year. To that end, one anonymous donor has offered a $100,000 matching challenge to help support this work. Until January 15, gifts of any size will be matched. If you sign up for sustaining monthly gifts at any level, a FULL YEAR of your giving will be matched for us right now. Please help us meet this challenge and spread the love this holiday season. Visit us at NCTCSF.ORG/DONATE to make your matched gift today!
