from the Founder & Artistic Director
Opposites attract. In relationships, that can be a
steadying dynamic; having the yin to another’s yang provides balance. Sometimes though, when opposing points of view are in play, harmony is only achieved by agreeing to disagree, leaving unfinished business in its wake. In an effort to keep the peace in a relationship, we may unknowingly be setting the stage for irreversible consequences down the line. Such is the case in Michael McKeever’s striking new play, Daniel’s Husband. Daniel Bixby longs to tie the knot with his soul mate Mitchell Howard. Mitchell, however, is vehemently opposed to the “normative” convention of marriage. No big deal you may think, work it out guys. There are far worse problems in the world. Then, something catastrophic occurs and in an instant lives change forever. I wouldn’t dream of spoiling the pivotal event of the play but I will suggest that even when we find ourselves at odds over significant issues in our primary relationships, it might be wise to find a way, at the very least, to secure the loose ends. In my book, practicality usually trumps emotionality and leaves far less room for extended conflict - most especially where family matters are concerned. We have the pleasure of presenting the West Coast Premiere of this Off-Broadway bound play, and I am increasingly proud that NCTC is becoming an ever more sought after incubator for new work. Almost immediately after closing in San Francisco, a New York cast will open Daniel’s Husband, at Primary Stages produced in cooperation with my good friend Ted Snowdon. Speaking of new…2017 is upon us. It’s no secret that we all have our work cut out for us in a shifting political climate. We are fortunate to be able to gather in the shared space of theatre to broaden and fortify our perspectives. But it won’t be enough to just observe, let us heed the central message in Daniel’s Husband and resolve to listen, learn and then take action.

G IVIN G Remembering Gerald “Jerry” Rosenstein & His Legacy BY LAURA POPPITI
At NCTC, we are fortunate to have a community of supporters that inspire and motivate us each and every day. Such is the case with Gerald Rosenstein (known as Jerry to his friends), who passed away on January 1, 2016. “A bridge player, music lover, avid traveler and nature lover with an unquenchable joie de vivre”, Jerry was also a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to the U.S. in 1946 before landing in San Francisco in 1949. He went on to enjoy a successful career and upon entering his midfifties, turned his attention towards philanthropy and volunteering. In 1996, Jerry played a prominent role in a successful $1.5M fundraising campaign for the U.S. Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE 8 NCTC 2016-2017 SEASON

to endow research efforts on the wartime experience of homosexuals. Along with underwriting a wealth of resources that document the Nazi persecution of gays and lesbians, the campaign’s benefactors— collectively acknowledged as American Gays and Lesbians, Families and Friends— have a permanent presence on the Museum’s Founders Wall - the first federal facility recognition of this sort. During his lifetime Jerry also supported NCTC as well as several other arts organizations, human rights campaigns, and environmental causes and was a proud member of ACLU, Human Rights Campaign and Human Rights Watch. He was an active member of San Francisco’s LBBTQ synagogue, Congregation Sha’ar Zahav; served on the Boards of Jewish Family & Children’s Services and San Francisco Performances; and spoke to youth here and in Europe about his experiences during the holocaust, and of gay rights, equality and human rights. In planning for his legacy, Jerry remembered numerous charities including NCTC to which he left a generous bequest in support of our General Fund, where it will support our most important needs such as artist & teacher salaries, student financial aid, and program advancement. Jerry’s forward thinking is a reminder that each one of us can create a legacy—no matter the amount—that reflects our life, beliefs, and values. We thank Jerry for his inspiring efforts during and after his lifetime, and extend our gratitude to our current Encore Society members as well. Video and audio interviews with Jerry are available at jerryrosenstein.info.

BY AN D R E A PART R I D G E
NCTC’s Family Matinee Series is a different type of children’s theatre experience. While many children’s theatre productions use adult actors, this program provides teen actors, stage managers, and crew members with their first professional paid gig. Once you step into the theatre for a Family Matinee, you’re in their capable hands. Conservatory Director Stephanie Temple says of this unexpected practice, “When you set the bar high, my experience is that teens rise to it.” That’s because the Family Matinee Series serves as a preprofessional theatrical training program for young adults and is the culmination of years of Conservatory training through our on-site classes. Live from the Basement!: a modern mashup of classic kids songs, directed by Stephanie Temple, is the latest in our Family Matinee Series (FMS). Many
of our FMS productions follow a familiar narrative of a classic story or fairytale, but with a modern twist. Live from the Basement! features an entirely new story developed around the musical talents of our actors in collaboration with Temple. In the show, a group of teens finally land their band’s first gig. The catch? It’s at an elementary school, and they have to play nursery rhymes instead of their soulful indie covers. However, nothing is stopping them from performing however they want. Have you ever heard “The Muffin Man” in the style of Alicia Keys? What about a Jamaican version of “Jack & Jill”? As this original production is unique to the skills of our dedicated teen actor cast, this may be your only chance to see it! The FMS is not just for the performers. For many children,

attending a Family Matinee is their first exposure to live theatre and the wonder therein. Moreover, it’s an opportunity

for an audience of young people to be represented on stage. For example, Bollywood Sleeping Beauty, produced in 2012 and 2014, reimagines the fairytale by setting it in India. Temple recalls the first performance, where an audience of Indian families, new to NCTC, brought their young children. She says, “after the show, groups of young girls dressed in saris were playing and recreating the choreography they had just seen.” A parent turned to Temple to say, “Finally, something for my kid.” The children’s experience of seeing their identities reflected in a reconceptualized classic story enhanced their connection to the narrative and to the theatrical arts. Providing these experiences, both for young performers and their even younger audience, is essential to the goals of the Conservatory and NCTC as a whole. You can support the Family Matinee Series and our other theatre education programs by making a donation to the Andrew Nance Annual
Nance. Your gift allows young people to access affordable theatre, provides scholarships to students, and brings classes to underserved communities. Donate securely online at nctcsf.org or contact Development Manager Andrea Partridge at 415.694.6158 or andreap@nctcsf.org for more info.
