The Masters Green Jacket In 1934, at the height of the depression, the world was in turmoil. Most golf courses in the U.S. were folding and closing their doors. President Roosevelt was entrenched with the U.S. auto workers, trying to prevent the largest strike in the country’s history and German Chancellor Adolf Hitler was building his empire. Bobby Jones, who retired from golf after winning the Grand Slam in 1930, at the ripe old age of 28 had decided to come out of retirement and introduce the world to his new masterpiece, Augusta National. On March 22nd 1934, the first tee shot at The Masters was struck by Robert T. Jones Jr. on what is now the 10th tee. The first Masters champion was Horton Smith, from Detroit, who went on to win The Masters again in 1936 and also captured 2 U.S. Opens, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship. In 1937, the first Green Jackets were given to club members only to identify them as reliable sources of information to guest and to let waiters know who should get the bill at dinner. Sam Snead received the first Masters Champion Green Jacket in 1949, and with the victory became an honorary member of the club, as were all past champions. The Green Jacket color is a shade of green called “Pantone 342”, nicknamed, “Masters Green” and out of respect no manufactures in the U.S. make a jacket in this color. The color was envisioned to match the color of the rich spring rye grass at Augusta National by Clifford Roberts. The stark yellow represented the rites of spring in the south from the yellow crocuses that lined the course. Traditionally, the previous year’s winner presents the Green Jacket to the new champion each year. After 1 year, every winner’s jacket is returned to the club and never to be worn outside of Augusta National again. The Masters is a prize that few capture in their golf career and the winners are revered as the very best. In golf, the Masters is the ultimate major in the game and the Green Jacket has become one of the most recognized symbols in sports today.

On the Wailea gold course in Maui, we were paired with a couple that was engaged in selling their Turtle Town home for $28m. Casually dressed, they began namedropping on the first tee, “If you’re from Arizona, do you know Alice Cooper? We’re attending his daughter’s wedding.” Yes, we met the golf addict rock star and when introduced he said, “Alice? That’s a funny name for a girl.” During the round between their phone calls, the couple asked about our golf products – Vice Balls only available online, the Caddy Daddy Talon glove with a sticky grip, Hirzl for all weather and a mixed bag of clubs (Tour Edge Exotics drivers and woods, Bridgestone irons, a Ping putter for her and a “watermelon Mantis” for him which caused Fred Couples to ask at Southern Dunes, “What the hell is that?”) Ha, we were holding our own for a moment with the name-dropping. They thirsted for our recommendations on golf products for travel. Around the 12th hole we shared, “The best golf travel product out there is the Sun Mountain Club Glider. We push our golf clubs with one finger through the airport.” They said, “Oh we wouldn’t need that. We have our own jet.” In unison we replied, “Well of course you do!” Actually, anyone can fly on a private jet these days without owning one. Look into Netjets. Prices are slightly or vastly higher than flying commercial first class, depending on how many split the charter bill. There are no worries about security or your bags. If you, like most golfers however appreciate

Travel can be a culinary excursion. Breakfast is often included in domestic lodging but local diners tell a story as in the case of Palm Springs where we met Ralph Waite. Yeah, name dropping again. If on a budget, happy hours are a great way to save. Try the signature cocktail and an app for dinner. What more do you really need? And bartenders/servers know the local fun spots. It’s how we found the secret waterfalls and rope swing with our grown kids in Kauai. Distilleries, breweries and wineries are cropping up in all parts for exploration. The Louisville bourbon trail blazed the way. Dip your own bottle of Makers’ Mark in the red wax then enjoy a mint julep at Churchill Downs. Race lovers might also gallop to a steeplechase at Springdale Race Course in Camden, South Carolina or Saratoga Springs, New York, famous for healing waters. Golf abounds in both regions. Riders should consider Sheila Johnson’s Salamander Equestrian Resort with golf at Creighton Farms. They also produce the best kitchen show. Most chefs are happy to divulge tips that you might abbreviate at home for a taste of the place you loved. We often cook St. Kitts rice with Coconut water, garlic and veggies. For nightlife, shows, gaming and dance options are a concierge question or click away. Avoid making the schedule too full in advance. Let the vacation take you. Traveling and meeting new friends is a beautiful mixed bag of unexpected discoveries.

Ulster County Golf Courses By Rick Remsnyder

Golf in Ulster County continues to grow and flourish at a time when the business has struggled in other parts of the country. The sprawling county, which is geographically the size of the state of Rhode Island, is known for having 12 of the best and most picturesque daily-fee golf courses in New York. Golfers from all over New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania come to play a variety of courses that are in excellent shape, are very affordable and offer little or no waiting to play. One of the truly amazing success stories is what has happened in Saugerties with the course built by Dr. Anthony Bacchi. Lazy Swan Golf and Country Club Village expanded from nine to 18 holes in the spring of 2012 and has become a regular stop for golfers who enjoy the 6,400-yard course with magnificent views of the nearby Catskill Mountains. “We’re located just a couple of minutes off the New York State Thruway,” Lazy Swan pro Steve Simeon said. “People love that the course is well-groomed, challenging and offers a variety of stunning golf holes.” Bacchi took a chance when he opened a nine-hole golf course in 2005 amid rather unsettling economic times. While courses around the country were closing, Bacchi had a vision that if he built a quality product people would come. His risk has paid off handsomely. Rondout Golf Club, a scenic 18-hole semiprivate course in Accord, is known for its many risk-reward holes with several streams and man-

made lakes on the property. “It’s a fun course to play with the opportunity to make birdies if you hit good shots,” Rondout pro John DeForest said. Apple Greens Golf Course in Highland is a 27-hole layout, which is located just five minutes from Exit 18 on the New York State Thruway. It attracts golfers from the New York City metropolitan area who don't mind driving more than an hour because there is no waiting and a quick pace of play. Abaco Club on Winding Bay Combines Perfection of Nature and Man’s Thoughtful Design By Katharine Dyson

Fourteen years ago international entrepreneur Peter de Savary was flying over an elevated headland on the east coast of Great Abaco, one of the largest islands in the Bahamas. As the early morning sun danced across gently rippling surf, de Savary looked down and saw a narrow peninsula with a two-mile crescent of powdery white. He saw no houses, no chaises or annoying little drinks with umbrellas in them — just gray-weathered driftwood, shells, tangles of sea grapes and palmettos. Perfect. To take a closer look, he took a boat and cruised up to the beach. Going ashore, he hacked his way into the snarly tropical foliage with a machete. Soon afterwards he bought the 534 acres and started work on The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, an exclusive retreat for people who need never ask “how much?” The Abaco Club bloomed into a luxurious private sporting club with multi-million dollar homes, spa, tennis courts and a stunning seaside golf course designed by Tom Mackenzie and Donald Steel, evoking the rolling landscape of Scottish links with grass-topped sand dunes, deep sculptured bunkers and drifts of native grasses.

It’s an Abaco Club tradition,” says Kristi Hull, sales director adding, “It’s the little things that take you over the top.” It is things like having your golf cart you parked head first into your parking space after dinner, be turned around and ready to go in the morning with a cheerful note about what’s going on that day. It’s the promise of an intimate dinner in your cottage or a picnic lunch on the island beach. It’s the incredible fishing in the waters all around and the hilltop view from Cliff House restaurant of sea and sand, the same jaw-dropping view you get from the infinity pool perched on the top of the hill. “I’ve been here since the beginning, one of the wait servers said. “Since Southworth came in, I’ve seen more positive things happen in the past six months than I have seen since I came.” GOLF COURSE When you go to your golf cart at the Abaco Club on Winding Bay, you may just see the autographed bag of Darren Clarke, European Ryder Cup Captain, parked next to yours— he’s one of the owners here. Named the top course in the Bahamas by Golfweek,

it’s a serious track with behemoth greens rolling (and we do mean rolling) fast (11-12 on the stimp) and depending on where the superintendent has placed the hole, your regulation score to the green may easily turn into a triple bogey on the card. The Abaco Club flows gently over the land in keeping with designer Steel’s mantra, “Why mess around with something God created.” Indeed with holes like the 4th framed by the sea and the 18th running home by the water, along with well-placed bunkers, pampas grasses, palms and palmettos, the course is a beauty. In designing the course, Steel and MacKenzie took into account the wind. You should too. Six of the first seven holes play downwind easing you into your round. Although there are some elevations especially when you climb up a hill to the 15th tee,

the course for the most part is gently rolling— that is except on some greens where you can encounter some scary undulations like on the 8th and 12th where large swales run through the middle. On some greens there seems to be no safe landing spot so best to be prepared to laugh at yourself as you see your well-placed pitch hit, roll past the pin slowly then take off on a wild ride down a bank. Addressing this, Southworth says, “We may modify a couple of the greens which have dramatic movement.” Southworth also noted they are completing an extensive new golf facility where golfers can practice their game as well as their putting on a short game area designed by Bob Cupp. When you play golf here, you really don’t

need a tee time, nor do you have a ranger pushing you to keep up. Even in peak season, you may see just one or two other golfers on the course and with only about 3,000 rounds a year—an average of two foursomes a day— the course hardly has enough traffic to even get blemished. It also helps that fairways, tees and greens are planted with superb salt tolerant Paspalum grass while roughs are being converted to rugged zoysia. And memorable it is. Sir Sean Connery is said to have remarked, “It’s never played it the same way twice. I’ll never get bored.” LIFESTYLE In the circular Cliff House bar, a music mogul wearing khaki shorts, tee shirt and sandals chats with another guy in jeans and polo shirt. You don’t know their stories or just how rich they are, you just know they are because they are here. The jovial bartender, Archie Simmonette, who has been here from the beginning, knows what the owners drink and whether they prefer a Cohiba or Hoyo de Monterey. Fish is a big item on the menu along with local favorites like curried chicken with jasmine rice and scallops and shrimp in a light tomato cream sauce. Both delicious. Romar Forbes, executive chef, says, “We go through more than 150 lbs. of fish a week.” In fact, with excellent

fishing all around the club, if guests bring a fish to the kitchen, they will cook it for the evening’s meal. Forbes also likes soups and says, “I have a great carrot soup recipe.” On the beach, there are plenty of chaises and towels—no need to pop down early morning and claim your spot: all “landing areas” on the beach are good and there are plenty available even in peak season. You can also take on of the watercrafts out at no extra charge. The small electric catamaran with a sun canopy is a great way to reach the little island beach. For a panoramic view of everything, settle into a chair at the hilltop infinity pool. Nearby is the exercise room and spa. REAL ESTATE In keeping with the non-glitz ambiance, architectural styles favor traditional Bahamian design with French doors, open kitchens, covered porches and beautiful exterior railings and detailing. Paint colors, artwork, fabrics and other features also reflect upbeat, island colors. Estate lots of .9 to 1.6 acres selling from $1.75 to $3.9 million, may overlook the sea, beach and/or golf course offering stunning views from many aspects. Buyers will spend several million more building and furnishing their lofty residences with the approval of the architectural board.

Two-to-four-bedroom Plantation-and Bahamian Island-style cottages are staggered up a hill overlooking the sea and beach. I was born in Mumbai, India to British parents and lived there until 4 years old, when we moved back to the UK. My older brother and I grew up in Suffolk, which is two hours north of London on the East Coast. Cricket, field hockey and rugby were the main sports I played in school and I didn’t take up playing golf until just before going to university, when I took a year out to work and travel in Australia in 1988. My interest in golf started earlier than that and was sparked by the likes of Ballesteros, Lyle, Langer and Faldo … all Europeans who came to fame in the 1980s with victory at the Masters. Having said that, the one moment that really grabbed my attention was Jack Nicklaus winning the Green Jacket in 1986 at the age of 46 - incredible! This is where my golf journey began and after 28 years of playing the game all over the world I should be better than the 14 handicapper that I am. In 1998, a friend of mine named Andrew Stanley approached me about building a golf travel business. Andrew brought four of us together as his “Founding Partners” and Golfbreaks.com was launched in the UK with

We initially focused on short domestic UK trips - mostly weekends - helping UK golf resorts sell empty beds and tee times at very attractive prices. MW: Golfbreaks originated in the UK in 1998 and later expanded to the USA. Is there a difference in terms of what someone seeks from the UK versus Americans when booking through your services? Having said that, I recently took a trip to Alabama and those golf courses on the Robert Trent Jones Trail are incredible and at a fraction of the price. Closer to my roots, and being a lover of links golf, it is hard to beat playing golf in Scotland and Ireland. The history, natural and rugged terrain, the scenery and, of course, the local hospitality are all off the charts. You just have to pack for all seasons and be prepared to drink some warm beer!

MW: Give me a percentage breakdown of the key elements customers want when traveling -for example -- is golf itself 50% of that equation or more? The lodging, food, transport, non-golf attractions, etc., etc. DG: There are four key elements to a golf trip – golf, accommodations, ground transportation and flights. New clubhouse enhancements at The Cape Club were unveiled in the fall of 2015, along with the addition of a new restaurant, the Cape Grille Steak & Seafood. Clubhouse enhancements included a complete renovation of fixtures, furnishings, marble tile accents, siding, windows, doors and more. The renovated clubhouse is home to more than 20,000 square feet of banquet space, groom and bridal suites, golf shop, meeting space and the Cape Grille Steak & Seafood. A new golf experience is also being crafted as the original 18-holes have been transformed to create a totally refreshed golf journey. New tee boxes were added, fairways were widened and reshaped, putting greens and new green complexes were constructed, and each hole was enhanced with silica “Augusta-white” sand bunkers.

Greens, green approaches and fairways were seeded with bent grass. Roughs and tees were hydro-seeded with a rye/bluegrass blend. Outer rough areas were seeded with a drought tolerant fescue. There were dramatic changes made to every hole, including an expanded water feature on holes 9 and 18 that will present a challenging finish to each nine. All fairways were re-contoured and green complexes that were completely rebuilt, reshaped and re-contoured. Cart paths materials were created using white crushed stone to match the look of the Augusta white-sand bunkers. Changes to the golf course were overseen by Troon’s development department and Troon’s Vice President of Golf Course Development Ron Despain. Currently, Troon and the on-site Cape Club team are managing the final grow-in process. “The new ownership of The Cape Club certainly had a vision to embark upon a complete turnaround of the project,” said Despain. “After three decades the original clubhouse and golf course were certainly in need of a ‘refresh’. The new clubhouse is amazing and the golf course is currently being transformed into one of the best in the region. Our goal is to create a presentation on each and every hole that encourages the golfer to enjoy both the beauty and strategy of the golf hole.”

The new practice facility at The Cape Club is being relocated adjacent to the clubhouse to integrate golf, dining and social activities within the practice experience. Distance-tracking technology will also be integrated into the practice facility so golfers can accurately track how far they hit each club. Long term plans for the practice facility include the construction of an upper deck with seating areas that allow guests to dine, practice, take in football or baseball games on flat screen televisions and socialize, all within steps of the practice tee. The master plan for the Cape Club Resort calls for 28 single family homes and 80 golf villa and cottages where groups or individuals can spend the night, week or month. Resort shuttle services will take overnight guests to area beaches located just three miles from the Cape Club Resort. Additional future amenities call for a resort pool with bar and food service overlooking the golf course, an open-air event pavilion overlooking holes 9 and 18, as well as a luxurious spa with fitness center and indoor pool facilities. The residential, cottage, spa and pool elements of the resort are currently in the

permitting and planning stages. As part of the re-branding of the facility, Troon unveiled a fresh new logo and new club website at www.capeclubresort.com. The name of the resort was garnered in a unique way, with Troon utilizing popular social networks including a Google+ golf community that generated over 130 unique naming convections. Following the social campaign, the name “The Cape Club” was selected by ownership. “The Cape Club by Troon is a first class golf destination designed to enhance a member for the day experience,” said Mark Drago, general manager of The Cape Club. “We are excited to open our doors to invite the many locals and tourists who enjoy a challenging championship round of golf accompanied by a 5-star dining experience in our new restaurant, The Cape Grille. The days of women playing second fiddle in sports media and golf are thankfully long gone. This is exemplified by three talented sports reporters, with New England ties, who are at different points in their careers, but equally at home on the links. Parker’s Putts Jayme Parker has become one of the most respected and revered sports reporters in New England. The longtime NESN fixture found golf through her Red Sox coverage. She relates, “It was 1998 and (former Red Sox) Tim Naehring told me that I just had to play in his tournament. I had no clubs, so I went to Sports Authority. At the tournament, I was literally unwrapping a different club as I got to each hole.” Parker’s golf baptism was an exercise in learning. “I almost hit (former Red Sox outfielder) Darren Bragg in the head with a drive, and Bobby Orr was playfully ridiculing me all day.” The competitive Parker still hits the course regularly. She relates, “I golf in a bunch of tournaments every year, but you really can’t get better just doing charity tournaments. Golf humbles everybody. When Boston College was in a bowl game out west, I actually had a chance to play Pebble Beach. It was very difficult, but every hole is so picturesque and so beautiful.” Tappen’s Tees Also a NESN favorite, Kathryn

Tappen left Boston and is now a star at the NBC family of networks. She has great memories from one particular New England course, “I just love Newport Country Club. The holes are long and challenging, and the wind can change the game completely. You have to make adjustments at every hole.” “I played in a pro-am there with Natalie Gulbis. It was just unbelievable to watch how a pro prepares for a big tournament. She played two balls, and her caddy would mark every spot on the course. It was also amazing to get golf pointers from an LPGA pro.” Tappen has used golf to break down that wall between athlete and reporter. “I can remember being paired up in a foursome with Ray Bourque. We were poking fun at each other at every hole. It was great to have that kind of rapport. “They had a long drive competition at one of Bourque’s tournaments at the Golf Club of New England. It seemed like every great Bruins player was there. I was nervous, and gripped the club so hard not wanting to look bad in front of all those guys. I drove it straight down the middle over 200 yards. That was unbelievable.” Corrdry’s Course Boston’s 7NEWS sports anchor and reporter Alex Corrdry is trying to get where Parker and Tappen are in their careers.

Her golf game is already top flight, having been honed since childhood. She relates, “I took golf lessons at a local driving range in Rockville, Maryland. I also was in summer camps at Georgetown Prep when I was in 7th and 8th grade.” Corrdry’s golf career continued in high school. “I was on the ladies’ golf team at Walt Whitman High School from my freshman to my junior year. There were about 20 girls on the team. As with any sport, it’s wonderful to be on a team! Golf always gave me something to look forward to in the spring.” A blossoming sports television career does not leave much time for golf, but Corrdry’s competitive fire is still very much intact. She states, “Believe me when I am out playing best ball, I want my foursome to take advantage of my drive and putting! California Preteen, Miss California Jr, Miss Cosmopolitan (New York), and Miss New York before winning Miss America. Kira has become a tireless advocate on women’s issues, an ambassador and the Director of Digital Marketing for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and a keynote speaker at conferences, fundraisers and universities. An accomplished singer, Kira has sung at the NBA All-Star Game and MLB games and entertained thousands of troops during her USO tour.

NEGM: What motivated you to enter beauty pageants in the first place? KK: When I was 11, I entered a pre-teen pag-

eant. The competition was exciting, I won, and I got the bug. I competed in pageants once a year after that for five or six years, and then I took a break until I was 21. I entered the Miss America pageant because I wanted the $50,000 scholarship money for law school.

NEGM: Was the competition for the Miss America crown enjoyable or cutthroat? KK: Enjoyable. There is nothing cutthroat about

Kira is a first generation American of Russian parents who left Moscow in 1990, her father a surgical oncologist and her mother a real-estate broker. Kira is fluent in Russian and Spanish and graduated from Hofstra University Honors College in 2013 with a triple major of political science, global studies, and geography. She has been accepted at Notre Dame Law School. Beauty pageants have been in her blood since the age of 11, and her titles have included Miss

the competition at all. The thing about pageants is that there is a lot of camaraderie. We’re dealing with the same issues, challenges, and experiences. Some of my best friends come from pageants because we share a really special bond.

NEGM: As Miss America for a year, what responsibilities go along with the scholarship? KK: Miss America becomes the National

Goodwill Ambassador for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. I traveled throughout the country, visiting many of their 170 member hospitals. I participated in the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend and various fund raising events, including golf tournaments. Miss America does a lot with the military and working with the USO. I got to travel around the world on the USO tour with the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I spoke to and entertained

several years, first as a local pageant title holder and then as a volunteer when I was Miss New York City. I then continued to sponsor their services and awareness as Miss America. When Safe Horizon honored me with the Voice of Empowerment Award in 2015, it was one of the proudest moments of my year and of my life.

NEGM: Where and when did you learn to play golf? Handicap? KK: I picked up my first golf club at three years

NEGM: What activities did you enjoy the most? KK: The USO Tour, for sure! It changed my life

because it gave me a true appreciation for the way of life that we enjoy in the U.S. while we have men and women, far away from their families and friends, who are defending our freedom as Americans. My relationship with Nathan, a Champion of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and other Champions like him in the CMNH programs have also had a lasting effect upon me. Their joy and contentment and the manner in which they rise to their personal challenges have inspired me no end. I got to be a presenter on the national broadcasts of the Billboard Music Awards, the Academy of Country Music, and the American Music Awards. I went from being a restaurant hostess in New York City to having this crazy lifestyle of being in a different city every two days and traveling 20,000 miles a month. It was wild!

old, and I started playing when I was seven. I got pretty good and played in a junior league and then in high school for a year. Then, however, and I regret it now, I gave up golf until I became Miss America and realized how valuable this skill was that I had. I had a wonderful time at the 2015 BMW Charity Pro-Am Tournament in South Carolina, and I hope to play in it again this year. My handicap is 19, but I am working on lowering it. I recently did a three-day golf intensive at the beautiful Kapalua Resort on Maui.

NEGM: Dream Foursome of today? KK: Two dream teams for me. Annika Sorens-

I’m definitely not willing, as of today, to give up my whirlwind lifestyle!

NEGM: Final words on what the Miss America title has meant to you.

People think of the Miss America pageant as one night on television—the glamorous girl in the gown with the crown on her head who waves to the crowd. They don’t realize how much work it is or how much each winner’s life is changed for the better. I have been given opportunities to discover myself and to express myself that could only have come from this pageant. I am forever thankful to be Miss America, and I am very proud of that title. GREAT MOMENTS IN MASTERS HISTORY by Jack Ross “The Shot Heard Round the World”

Gene Sarazen was on the 14th hole of the final round of the 1935 Masters when he heard the roar for Craig Wood’s birdie on 18, which put Sarazen three strokes behind Wood. “It’s all over Gene,” said his playing partner, Walter Hagen. But Sarazen had a premonition. “They might go in from anywhere.” Only about a dozen spectators were around the 13th green when Sarazen played his second shot on the par-5 hole, a 4-wood from 230 yards. The ball struck the far bank of the hazard fronting the green, skipped onto the putting surface, and rolled softly into the hole: a double eagle. Sarazen tied Wood and won the playoff the next day. On the second playoff hole of the 1987 Masters, Larry Mize, a local boy whose primary experience at Augusta National had been tending a scoreboard as a teenager, struck a 140-foot pitch shot that bounced twice on the bank of the 11th green and rolled improbably into the hole for a birdie. “This is probably the toughest loss I’ve ever had,” said an incredulous Norman. Unfortunately, there was more misery awaiting the Shark at Augusta. The Golden Bear Emerges from Hibernation with Stunning Win at Age 46 When 46-year old Jack Nicklaus drove down Magnolia Lane for the 1986 Masters (its 50th edition), few people viewed the Golden (Olden?) Bear as little more than ceremonial window dressing for the tournament he had dominated in his younger years. He was a shadow of the dominant golfer who had won five green jackets. Winless in the past two years, Nicklaus had missed the cut or withdrawn in four of his seven events in 1986. But a newspaper article suggesting that no one his age could contend at Augusta fired up the Bear. In a magical performance on the back nine Sunday, with his son as his caddie, Nicklaus fired a record 30, and leaped past eight players, including formidable foes such as Tom Kite, Greg Norman, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Price, and Tom Watson, many of whom were in grade school when he won his first Masters. Down three strokes after a bogey at the 12th hole, the Bear eagled the par-5 15th hole, prompting CBS commentator Ben Wright to exclaim “Yes Sir! There’s life in the old Bear yet!” Nicklaus then stuck an iron within three feet on the par-3

GOLF CONTENT NETWORK 16th hole, and made a historic 18-foot birdie putt on 17 to clinch the win. Nicklaus’ record sixth green jacket made him the oldest Masters winner. It would be his last major. Like Tiger Woods’ first Masters in 1997, it was a moment for the ages. The Excruciating Collapse of the Shark As Greg Norman was leaving the general locker room Saturday evening after fending off Nick Faldo to take a formidable six-stroke lead in the 1996 Masters, a friend remarked that next year he’d be using the Champions locker room. No one could have predicted the devastation that would follow on Sunday.

How do you lose a six-shot lead at Augusta? Hook tee shots into trees, leave wedge shots short, butcher chip shots, three-putt from ten feet, and hit balls into water hazards on both par-3s on the back nine. Norman lost six shots to Faldo over a fivehole stretch and finished with a 78. One observer described him as “a dead man walking” on the back nine. Faldo felt so sorry for his opponent that he hugged him on the 18th green. Norman was never the same golfer after the painful collapse. A Star is Born, and a New Era in Golf Begins Although knowledgeable observers had been talking about the young phenomenon for years, no one was prepared for Tiger Woods’ historic domination of the 1997 Masters. The 21-year old demonstrated raw power (drives averaging 323 yards) and steely concentration as he reduced the fabled Augusta National to a muni track. The Lords of Augusta National no doubt were mortified to watch Woods hit pitching wedges into the 500-yard par-5 15th hole -- on his second shots -- and commenced plans to “Tiger proof” the course for future competitions. Woods fired rounds of 70-66-65-69 for an unheard of 18 under par 270, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record.

His 12-stroke margin of victory was the largest in a major since 1862. Nicklaus commented prophetically: “He’s more dominant against the guys he’s playing against than I was. He’s so long, he reduces the course to nothing.” When Tiger donned the green jacket in Butler Cabin, he launched a new era in golf and it seemed almost inevitable that Nicklaus’ record of 18 career majors would fall. Today, 1997 seems like ancient history. Phil Breaks the Major Drought Phil Mickelson arrived at Augusta National in 2004 with the unquestioned (if dubious) title of “Best Player Never to Win a Major.” While racking up dozens of Tour victories, Mickelson was 0-46 in majors, but had finished third several times at Augusta. Be-

fore he died in December 2003, his grandfather told him that 2004 would be the year. Yet Phil’s winless year in 2003 did not inspire confidence. After recording birdies on four of his last six holes, Mickelson stood on the 18th green staring down an 18-foot putt that would clinch his long-coveted major title. When the putt slid in, he jumped spread eagle and shouted to his caddie Jim (Bones) Mackay “I did it!” The green jacket broke the ice, and Mickelson has gone on to win two more Masters, the PGA Championship, and the British Open.

Everyone knows drivers today, though costing several hundred dollars, are marvels of technology and since they are usually used 14 times in a round finding the proper one is important. The variety of models coming to market each year have what some may call a be-

wildering list of features created by latest technology, design, materials and construction techniques. It’s no wonder the search for a new driver can be frustrating not to mention disappointing if the choice is not the right one. Here are the drivers for 2016 the staff of New England Golf Monthly has picked as being especially worth your consideration and as we always remind you, visit a PGA Professional for a fitting to determine the specifications to help you drive your best.

Callaway Golf

Callaway used the aerospace engineers at Boeing Co. to help with a new clubhead design in the XR16 driver and the result was a Speed Step in the crown for better air flow and less drag. Forgiveness was improved as well by stretching the crown so the center of gravity could be lower and deeper. The XR16 ($350) also uses a new version of the R*Moto Face Technology that’s almost one-fifth thinner which with a lighter body means this driver can be swung faster for more distance. Callaway also has the Great Big Bertha driver ($450) with the R*Moto face and a multi-material head plus a sliding rear sole weight to adjust for a draw or fade tendency. The most intriguing point however is the availability of a 40 gram shaft for the GBB so that those with slower swing speeds have a driver weighing as little as 295 grams and if the user’s swing speed is higher a heavier shaft will increased the weight all the way up to 335 grams. And speaking of players with a really high swing speeds, there’s the new XR Sub Zero driver used on Tour by Phil Mickelson. A 440cc low spin design with 2 interchangeable sole weights, it sells also for $450.

Cobra Golf

Cobra is getting a lot of TV air time since their leading endorser is Rickie Fowler and he uses the King LTD driver that has a “Spaceport” in the sole that not only redistributes clubhead weight but also lets you see inside. The center of gravity has been moved so it’s on the neutral axis of the head, essentially the line perpendicular to the face running to the rear, but the significance is it produces lower spin and better energy transfer to produce more distance. The crown is a carbon composite and Cobra built in a channel around the perimeter of the face to let it flex more on impact. The other notable Cobra driver is the King F6, a large profile very stable game-improvement design with an 18-gram weight that can be moved in either of two positions in the sole to adjust launch angle and ball spin. At $350 this a good choice for those looking for a game-improvement category driver and it has an adjustable hosel as well giving 16 different ball launch/spin settings when combined with the two sole weight positions. For those wanting more adjustments there’s the King F6+ at $400 with a carbon fiber sole track and a sliding 18-gram weight plus a carbon fiber crown. Both F6 models use the perimeter face channel similar to the King LTD.

Nike Golf The new Vapor Fly family has three drivers and the company says each one has been engineered to create a higher ball flight than last year’s Vapor models. The Vapor Flex 440 ($500) has gone big in replacing titanium in the clubhead by doubling the amount of RZN reinforced by carbon fiber so now 60 percent of the head is nonmetallic. RZN is a very light but strong proprietary material Nike uses in both clubs and golf balls. It also uses the FlexFlight RZN tube weighted on one end in a sole chamber to adjust launch angle, spin rate, forgiveness and workability by flipping the tube end for end. The face is taller and thinner plus a compression channel allows for additional face flex. The Vapor Fly ($350) has 30 percent less weight in the striking blue-colored crown and a redesigned Hyperflight face with a compression channel in the sole. Forgiveness has been enhanced by the use of Nike’s Covert cavity back to distribute the weight more evenly. The Vapor Fly Pro model ($400) shares the lighter crown and being used by top players on the PGA Tour including Rory McIlroy. It has a five loft and three face angle hosel for a total of 15 possible launch settings.

Ping Ping replaced the G30 model, a favorite last year, with the new G driver. It has an extremely thin exoskeleton construction in the crown (think dragonfly wing) to reduce weight but maintain the needed strength so the center of gravity is deeper and closer to the sole than they have done before. The crown “turbulators” have been retained and a vortex reducing design on the rear of the clubhead similar to flaps on the bottom of semitrailers. Together they reduce aerodynamic drag by 37 percent according to Ping. Besides the standard G model there is the G SF Tec with weight pushed closer to the heel for a more pronounced right to left slice-fighting ball flight and the G LS Tec that has the center of gravity forward to give lower spin and lower launch angle. Each is $400.

Srixon

Srixon goes against what might be called conventional thinking about drivers in the Z355 ($350) by using a much heavier clubhead of 211-grams with a high balance point shaft that the company says is best for a consistent stable swing. The head is approximately five percent heavier than other drivers and is matched with a lightweight shaft of 53 grams. Srixon worked out this configuration saying golfers will gain distance by increasing the amount of energy in the swing. The adjustable hosel has 12 settings for loft, lie and face angle and titanium cup face with a large sweet spot.

TaylorMade The M1 and M2 models from TaylorMade both have a carbon fiber crown and an adjustable hosel. The M1 ($500) actually was introduced last August and within a week became the most played driver on the PGA Tour. It has a “Ttrack” sliding weight arrangement on the sole to adjust ball flight tendency. A less expensive alternative, albeit without the T-tracks, the M2 ($400) uses TaylorMade’s Speed Pocket design in the sole. Both the M1 and M2 have an extremely lightweight carbon fiber crown with the weight saved compared to the usual titanium moved to the sole and slightly towards the rear of the head for a higher launch.

Wilson Staff Wilson Staff has the very well received FG Tour F5 ($380) made especially for those with high swing speeds wanting a low spin design driver. It uses a lightweight clubhead and lightweight shaft similar to the D200 model of last year but moved the weight forward closer to the face and there a choice of sole weights of 3-, 7- and 11 grams. The adjustable hosel is very light in fact 5.3 grams or 12 percent less than the design of just two years ago and it has a really nice feature allowing the clubhead loft to be changed without removing the shaft.

The New Fairway Woods and Hybrids By ED TRAVIS

Within recent years the changes in fairway woods and hybrids have been dramatic. Manufacturers are using the same materials and construction found in drivers such as more flexible faces to produce clubs not only giving the average player more distance but better ball flight characteristics and a lot more forgiveness. In many cases for those having problems hitting a driver one of the new fairway woods make a viable substitute because they hit the ball longer than previously and are easier to get in the air. Hybrids, which have all but caused the demise of long

irons, are even better from the rough and a staple in the bags of most players, even touring professionals. Gone are the days when drivers, fairway woods and hybrids had to match and come from the same manufacturer and my set makeup is a good example. I carry a driver, 3-wood, 3-hybrid and 4-hybrid each from a different company because in each instance they produce the distance and shot shape I want. A little research and pre-purchase testing will show you what you need to get the most out of your fairway woods and hybrids.

Callaway Golf

The XR16 fairway wood ($230) has a bigger head with the highest modulus of inertia (MOI) and highest coefficient of restitution (COR) in any of their fairway woods and players say it just looks easy to hit. A hotter cup face from decreased thickness compliments the larger sweet spot and the overall head shape is more aerodynamic. XR Hybrids ($200) have a forged steel face cup to give more ball speed and better resistance to twisting from a redesigned head shape that repositioned weight and moved the center of gravity 46 percent lower than the X2 Hot hybrid of 2014. The XR OS (oversized) hybrids ($220) have a wider head and provide added versatility with a utility club-like sole with a stabilizing keel in the center. There is also a XR Pro version for $210. Adding to the Great Big Bertha family lineup are fairway woods priced at $250. Using Callaway’s Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup to generate higher ball speeds and making the head slightly larger the MOI is improved as well. The feature though we especially liked was the updated War Bird sole for smoother turf interaction. The lower lofted GBB fairway woods have an eight setting adjustable hosel. Unlike the majority of the other Callaway hybrids the Apex is designed with “iron DNA” making a true iron replacement for better shot control. The wide sole and large hitting area make this hybrid handle the rough and tricky lies better than an iron.

Cobra Golf The Cobra King LTD fairway wood is part of the reintroduction of a club line with a name that brings back a lot of memories. As does the companion driver, the sole incorporates a Spaceport weighing 16-grams, which pushes the center of gravity (COG) lower and increase the resistance to twisting. The King LTD fairway woods ($299) come in a 3/4 or 4/5 so loft settings run from 13 degrees to 19 degrees. The other Cobra fairway wood we like is the King F6 model priced at $239, a medium size clubhead that is designed for all swing types combining loft adjustments with front and back center of gravity settings. The result is forgiveness with distance through by producing the correct spin and higher ball speeds. The F6 Hybrid ($199) has a traditional looking head shape at address and one fixed 13-gram weight positioned towards the rear of the sole. The weight is low and deep in the head to help in getting the ball out of most any lie.

Ping

Ping has what they are calling a new category of clubs, the crossover that combines “the precision, workability and control of an iron with the ball speed and forgiveness of a hybrid.” Unlike woods or hybrids Ping’s Crossover has an iron’s flat machined face. The body is more like that of a hybrid and built so the sole and top rail flex adding to the distance with heel and toe weighting for playability. “People love the look and feel of the Crossover because they haven’t seen anything like it,” CEO John Solheim said. “It shouldn’t be confused with a driving iron; it’s higher-launching and much more forgiving, and offers a lot of versatility. Our extensive player testing has revealed this to be a very attractive option.” The Ping Crossover is $247. Those looking for a more traditional hybrid from Ping need go no further than the G family modes. The crown is ultra-thin allowing the COG to be low and back give high launch with lower spin and great resistance to twisting. The G hybrids even have “turbulators” on the crown for better aerodynamics and lower drag on the downswing. They are priced the same as the Ping Crossover and available in four lofts for 17 to 30 degrees. G Fairway Woods have a lower lead edge that yields 12% higher face impact compared with the G30 series of 2015 and helps get the ball in the air. The thinnest crown ever in a Ping fairway wood means discretionary weight has been used to move the CG lower and farther back which also makes it easier to get the ball airborne. G model Fairway Woods are $287.50 and in addition to the Standard come in the G SF Tec that has weight closer to the heel, a lighter swing weight, and higher lofts to produce right-to-left shot bend for players whose typical miss is to the right. There’s also the G Stretch 3 to produce added distance when used off the tee. It has a larger head, slightly forward CG, 13 degrees loft and reduced spin.

Srixon

The Srixon Z 355 fairway woods have what the company calls “Action Mass technology,” a combination of a heavier clubhead with an ultra-high balance point Miyazaki Jinsoku shaft. The head also has a shallower profile but higher MOI and maraging steel face so the sweet spot is larger adding both forgiveness and consistency. The three-wood is a cup face design and there’s a 40-gram inner floating bar to help give higher launch and a trajectory with lower spin. Besides the three-wood of 15 degrees, there are also the four (17), five (19) and seven (22) each priced at $230. Z 355 hybrids also have the heavier clubhead and Miyazaki Jinsoku shaft to help increase ball speed and aid in making a consistent, stable swing. A maraging steel face with a clubhead shape that Srixon calls a “Player Profile” makes for a very playable package. Price at $200 a 19 degree 3H, 4H of 23 degrees and a 5H with 26 degrees are available.

TaylorMade Golf

The M1 and M2 drivers from TaylorMade are already best sellers and each has complementary fairway woods and hybrids. The M1 fairway woods are the first carbon crown design for TMaG and being lighter the COG moved lower and helps improve launch conditions. Trajectory personalization by way of shot shaping (fade, neutral, draw) is provided by two 15-gram weights sliding along a sole track that doubles a speed channel for the clubface. M1 fairways woods are $300. TaylorMade was among the first to make utility clubs such as the Raylor and then develop hybrids called Rescues which became for some became the generic name for all hybrids. The M2 fairway woods ($250) feature a new Speed Pocket for a large sweet spot and reduced spin which means added distance and use a carbon composite crown construction similar to the M1. Most golfers after first hitting them comment on the confidence inspiring look at address and superior impact sound provided by a fluted hosel and internal acoustic construction. M2 Rescues ($200) have a newly redesigned open-channel Speed Pocket and a low center of gravity to help getting out of most any lie while producing extra distance.

Exotics E9 fairway woods from Tour Edge are a great example of why the company has such an excellent reputation. There’s rear sloping crown for lower aerodynamic drag and the sole has their outstanding Slip Stream configuration. Draw and fade bias can be adjusted with heel sole weigh sold separately. The Exotics E9 fairway woods ($230) also benefit from weight be moved towards the rear to help the ball launch angle and shares with the E9 hybrids Tour Edge’s Power Grid construction behind the clubface for more face flex at impact. The Exotics E9 Hybrids ($160) are also an example of how good their products are and why they are favorites of knowledgeable players. The high strength variable thickness cup face is combo brazed to the body and the sole has Tour Edge’s SlipStream design so the sole tends to glide over the ground rather than dig in.

Wilson Staff

FG Tour F5 fairway woods from Wilson have a reworked clubhead shape with a Carpenter maraging steel face. There’s a super light hosel system, the same as used on the FG Tour F5 driver, that adjusts plus or minus 1.5 degrees. Since the stock tock lofts offered are 13.5, 15 and 17 degrees the quick change hosel means effectively that lofts from 12.5 to 19 degrees are available in half degree increments. Certainly as wide a range as any manufacturer can offer. The sole has an interchangeable weight near the face for decreased spin which combined with clubface high CT (Characteristic Time, a measurement of coefficient of restitution) increases ball speed and distance. Priced at $230, the FG Tour F5 fairway woods comes with a stock Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki Z65 shaft. The FG Tour F5 hybrids also received a refined head shape for this year and the face is of the same thin Carpenter maraging steel as the fairway wood. Wilson used the quick fitting hosel from the fairway woods and driver for this hybrid and it allows a plus or minus one degree adjustment. Three lofts are standard, 17, 20 and 23 degrees and weighting adjustment is provided by an interchangeable sole weight. The Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki Z80 shaft is stock and retail pricing is $210.

2016 Team New England ON THE TOURS On The PGA Tour Jon Curran, (MA), is in his second year on the PGA Tour. The Hopkinton native has a scoring average of 71.154. Curran has made 6 cuts in 13 starts earning $539,414. Not a long hitter, Jon needs to tighten up his Greens In Regulation, (GIR), statistic currently 62.65%. Hitting more greens in regulation along with some short game improvement and Curran is sure to see the winner’s circle in 2016. Arron Baddeley, (NH), sports a scoring average of 70.930 with earnings of $441.662 making 7 cuts in 10 starts. Baddeley has earned more in his ten starts this year than all of 2015. Baddeley needs to get control of his driving accuracy, (54.5%), to improve his GIR percentage, (63.3%). His putting stats look very good as does his overall short game. Note: This writer apologizes for not including Arron Baddeley in our TNE updates. Oversite corrected. Keegan Bradley, (VT), Keegan Bradley, (VT), has a scoring average of 71.090 making 4 cuts in 10 starts with earnings of $253,407. Bradley continues to have trouble adjusting to the new USGA Anchor Putter Ban. The winner’s circle has alluded Keegan since his WGC Bridgestone Invitational in 2012. An excellent ball striker, Bradley’s driving and GIR stats are good but his Sand Save rank of 203 and Overall Putting Average of 203 indicate the need for confidence building by our 2011 PGA Champion. Scott Stallings, (MA), has a scoring average is 71.377 making 4 cuts in 12 starts. Although he has put his suspension behind him, an illness forced a WD earlier in the year. Scott has had his mind focused on family. Wife Jennifer gave birth to their second child, Millie, March 1st so Scott has been busy on the Homefront. Much like Bradley, Stallings needs work on his putting and sand game. Scott’s earnings to date are $285,050. Rob Oppenheim, (MA), is in his first year on the PGA Tour at age 35. Making 5 cuts in 7 starts, ‘Opps’ made good on an exemption into the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Playing on the world stage after climbing onto the first page of the leaderboard in round 2, T-4th at 8 under par. Rob finished -7/281, T-20th. Rob’s scoring average is 71.637 with earnings of $137,930. An improved putting average, Rob needs work on hitting more fairways. Special congrats on Rob’s special week at Bay Hill. J.J. Henry, (CT), continues to struggle with his game. Although making 8 cuts in 9 starts, Henry’s highest finish was 42nd at the Shriners Hospitals Children Open in October. A scoring average of 72.178, JJ’s putting stats tell the story. His putting numbers were good through 2011 but have continued to decline since. One of our most talented players, we wish Henry luck regaining his putting confidence.

Champions Tour Billy Andrade, (RI), having been away from competitive golf for several years, has regained his form. Now in his third season on the Champions Tour, Andrade’s scoring average sits at 70.25 and he is ranked 8th in the Charles Schwab Cup race. Billy finished the Allianz Championship T-1ST only to lose in a playoff. Andrade has earned $199,453 in his four starts this year. Brad Faxon, (RI), continues to struggle to get back to his old form. Going back and forth between broadcasting and playing, Faxon hasn’t been able to focus entirely on his golf. We certainly hope to see Brad back in the winner’s circle soon as his attention turns back to the fairways. Of note: Brad and Billy are dedicated to giving back to community and to that end have been the spearheads at the forefront of the annual CVS Health Charity Classic.

European Tour Peter Uihlein, (MA), is in his 5th year on the European PGA Tour and has been playing well of late showing a scoring average improvement from 73.38 to 70.63. In three weeks Peter finished 9th, T-4th and 4th in the Malaysia Championship, Perth International and True Thailand Classic respectively. Uihlein’s stats since the last issue have improved tremendously telling me the week he took off after the Perth event paid off.

LPGA Tour Megan Khang, (MA), is in her rookie season and has wasted little time letting the LPGA Tour know she has arrived through the quality of her play. A scoring average of 70.10 making 2 cuts in 3 starts as her LPGA Tour career unfolds, Megan finished T-11th at the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Championship and T-4th in the Founders Cup. Four sub-par rounds in the 60’s, Khang was in the hunt all the way finishing the event -19/269. The poised 18 year old from Rockland made the decision to turn professional in lieu of playing college golf. It appears it was a good decision. Brittany Altomare, (VT), finished 16th on the 2015 Symetra Tour’s money list to regain her LPGA Tour card. Making 1 cut in 3 starts, Werenski finished T-2nd in the Club Columbia Championship and earned almost as much, $61,600 in that event as his season total of $62,086 in 2015. Richy’s scoring average sits at 70.13. With his Columbia finish Werenski is ranked 8th in the Web.Com money list. Jim Renner, (MA) had a difficult year in 2015 making just 7 cuts in 27 starts on the PGA Tour with earnings of $90,000. Renner is playing on the Web.Com this year and continues to struggle making 2 cuts in 3 starts. Looking at Jim’s statistics compared to last year, there’s been improvement on all fronts including his scoring average. It was 72.431 at the close of 2015 compared to his current number of 70.70. James Driscoll, (MA) James has played in three events on the Web.com Tour this season in Panama, Columbia and The Chitimacha Louisiana Open. He missed cuts in all three. NEW ENGLAND GOLF MONTHLY Golf Industry Professionals Get Together at the 2016 New England Golf Summit at Blue Hill Country Club Sunny skies and a brisk spring air provided a warm welcome for more than 140 golf industry professionals and enthusiasts to the 2016 New England Golf Summit, which was held at Blue Hill Country Club. The season “kick off” event featured seven dynamic speakers who touched on a diversified set of issues and topics ranging from presentation in golf design to the hottest trends in equipment. “It was a great day and we were thrilled to have so many people take time to attend the Summit and enjoy what was a tremendous slate of speakers,” said Jesse Menachem, the MGA’s executive director who served as master of ceremonies. “There was a palpable excitement in the air about the positive momentum that we see in our industry.” The New England Golf Summit was a collaborative effort of the Alliance of Massachusetts Golf Organizations (AMGO) and comes one year after the group released the results of an economic impact study massgolfeconomy.com during at Massachusetts Golf Day, which was held last March at the Massachusetts State House. “We heard today that golf is the most powerful vehicle for relationship building,” said Menachem, who noted during his welcome that the Massachusetts golf industry’s gross

Salem Country Club, home of the 2001 USGA Senior Open, is once again is hosting The Senior Open Championship in June 2017. Salem, founded in 1895 is one of America’s finest creations by one of the worlds most noted course architect’s, Donald Ross. Salem has hosted five national championships and fifteen state championships in its storied history. The 2017 Senior Open will be the sixth USGA Championship that Salem Country Club has hosted, beginning with the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in 1932. Salem also hosted the 1954 U.S. Women’s Open Championship that was famously won by Babe Didrikson Zaharias, who had just recovered from surgery for colon cancer. Zaharias was 43 at the time of her victory, a record that still stands for oldest winner in the Women’s Open. The 1977 U.S. Senior Amateur and the 1984 U.S. Women’s Open were also held at Salem Country Club. “The USGA is delighted to return to Salem

Country Club and the New England region,” Daniel B. Last year some of the best golfers in the world visited Thorny Lea Golf Club in Brockton, MA. The golfers are members of the Symetra Tour, the developmental tour for women golf professionals and the gateway to the L.P.G.A. Golf Tour. It has been announced that W.B. Mason will once again be one of the primary sponsors for the 2016 W.B. Mason Golf Championship. The tournament will take place from May 23- 29 with 132 women golfers competing for the $125,000 purse with $18,750 going to the victor. The women will be playing in 22 tournaments this year but they are fighting for a lot more than a trophy. The top 10 on the final money list will be eligible to play on the L.P.G.A. tour for the fame and fortune that comes with playing on that tour. The Symetra Tour is certainly the training ground for the superstars of tomorrow. In 2015, Vicky Hurst shot three rounds in the 60â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

It has been a great start for Megan Khang on her quest to become the LPGA Rookie of the Year. “Keep an eye out for her visor and apparel as she is representing CT National this year and we are excited to be able to support Megan on her journey to greatness,” said Jim West, Director of Operations at CNGC. In only three starts as an LPGA rookie, Megan Khang has established herself a player to watch. The 18-year-old from Rock-

land, Mass., less than a year out of high school finished T11 in the season-opening Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic before missing the cut at the Coates Golf Championship. Then she took more than a month off while the LPGA swung through Australia and Asia, for the simple reason that traveling to those far-flung locales wasn’t in her budget. She came back last week at the JTBC Founders Cup in Phoenix and certainly showed no signs of rust. Paired with Michelle Wie and Cheyenne Woods, the diminutive teen could have been intimidated but instead shot 68-69 to advance to the weekend, while Wie and Woods both missed the cut. The finish earned Khang $54,379, the biggest check of her nascent career. She moved to 26th on the LPGA money list and second in the Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year standings behind in Gee Chun, the 21-year-old Korean who’s the reigning U.S. Women’s Open champion (and qualifies as a rookie despite having made eight LPGA starts in 2015). “A big shout out to Connecticut National Golf Club for joining me on this journey! If you haven’t gotten a chance to play this course you should definitely make some time to go out and play!” said Khang on social media. Connecticut National has been a strong supporter of both junior and women’s golf in New England and now they are reaching the professional ranks with supporting one of New England’s finest on the LPGA Tour.

Would someone please tell Timothy “Grouchy” Geary that after nine miserable years his infantile and incoherent rants have not been connecting with readers. Leave it to me to spill the beans about why the “Grouchy One” fails to connect. Sources say his habit is to blurt out worthless golf columns after pounding down 6 - 8 Bud Lites. Makes me wonder if a dozen brewskis might help him articulate better. So April is the month the sports world is obsessed with The Masters by Tom - the mother of all golf tournaments. A look at the May calendar shows another high-profile event at TPC Sawgrass called The Player’s Championship. The reason The Player’s Championship is noteworthy is because it is run by the biggest tour in the world, features a whopping purse of $10.5 million with $1.8 million to the winner, along with a 10-year exemption on the PGA Tour. Can we agree that if you’re a world class player, you will tee it up here? The Player’s Championship always gets the strongest and deepest field is because the paychecks are massive, the largest of the planet for posting a 72-hole score. If you make the cut you’ll pocket at least $25,000. The Pete Dye-designed TPC Sawgrass course is a quirky, made-for-TV track but its fun to watch the pros get sliced and diced on the back nine, which is filled with tons of risk and reward shots. The island green on the par-3 17th hole is the hokiest hole in golf, but it makes me watch. The hole is clearly a gimmick because the carnage of balls hit into

the water over the last four years reads like this: 2015 (45); 2014 (28); 2013 (44); 2012 (39). The Players has been around 42 years, but only at TPC Sawgrass since 1982, and in clutch moments some very big names have splashed balls into the pond around 17 green, turning possible victory into instant defeat. Sergio Garcia claimed victory in 2008, but a few years ago he was leading by two standing on 17 tee before splashing two balls into the pond. I’m not sure after watching that momentous choke that I felt a sharp surge of pain or pleasure. Great players aren’t supposed to do that in the clutch! Last year was memorable because Rickie Fowler played the final four holes in 5-under par, and then won a sudden death playoff with Kevin Kisner by birdieing 17. Certainly an impressive and memorable performance by Fowler, but The Player’s is not and never will be a major championship, despite all the chatter. A combination of field, course and fans can create an electric atmosphere around the event but not nearly as pressurepacked as a major. Jack Nicklaus is the only three-time champion before the event was held at Gorman TPC Sawgrass. Two-time champion Tiger Woods recently summed it up accurately saying, “I think you could honestly say that it’s the Tour that runs it, so that’s why they’re trying to elevate it to a major.” The Players is the PGA Tour’s flagship event and might be every bit as difficult to win as one of the majors and the final hour rarely lacks for suspense, drama or pressure. The tournament does not lack prestige and seems to get bigger and better every year. But it has not earned the right to be rated alongside the majors, it might be close. Jim Furyk, fourth in career money earnings with over $65 million including 17 wins said, “The Players is always a giant event. And, I would call it the fifth-biggest event in golf.” Amen. End of story…until next May when we once again begin debating whether the Player’s Championship is golf’s fifth major? Tom Gorman, in his prime could easily pump down a dozen Narraganset, or was it Schlitz?

You either keep evolving or you whither and die. Golf is no different than life and the time has come to stop talking about whether The Players Championship should be elevated to major tournament status and damn well do it. Gorman, of course, will pooh pooh this. He will regale you with the storied traditions surrounding the four majors and how it would ruin history and historic context if a fifth major should be added to the calendar. This, of course, is the same kind of thinking that would have kept us in horse-drawn buggys and perhaps even in caves. The Players Championship annually boasts the strongest field in all of professional golf. No amateurs are in the field, no former geezer champions taking up room, no club pros who earn their livelihood giving lessons and selling pastel sweaters out of the pro shop. No, the people who tee it up each year at the Players Club in Ponte Vedra, Florida, are the best in the world. Not a has been or a never will be among them. And they compete on one of the most demanding courses in the world, with three of the most challenging and dramatic holes in all of by Tim golf right at the very end, including the world’s most famous hole, the par 3 island 17th. Is there any more of a white knuckle 135-yard shot in all of golf? Ask the players themselves what the toughest tournament to win and they’ll mostly say the United States Open, mainly because the USGA takes the game of golf and transforms it into more of a test of survival than golfing excellence. Ask them what the toughest field is and to a man they’ll say The Players. So why hasn’t this become the fifth major? Its been around certainly long enough. The first one was contested 42 years ago. It’s held at the home of the PGA of America, where the Golf Hall of Fame is located and its one of the most cherished titles in all of professional golf. Well, we can sum that answer up in three words: The Grand Slam. The world of golf has been held hostage by the foolish dream that someday somebody may win all four major titles in the same

year. And if you add a fifth major then not only would that dream be compromised and made even more difficult, you’d have to come up with another moniker for what nobody has ever accomplished in the first place. Okay, Tiger Woods did once hold all four titles conGeary secutively, but he won the British Open and the PGA in one calendar year and then won the Masters and U.S. Open the next. That’s four in a row but it was not a Grand Slam. Not unless you add a giant asterisk on it. There are those who will maintain that the great Bobby Jones (please pause to genuflect) is the only player to have won the Grand Slam, but that was when both the British and U.S. Amateur titles were considered majors. They used to also say that Jack Nicklaus had 20 major titles because they included his two U.S. Amateur championships. That’s no longer the case, so by that logic, it can be argued that nobody has ever won a Grand Slam and it is unlikely that anyone ever will. So we can just throw out that argument and focus on a reason to keep The Players Championship from being considered a major. And there is none.
