While the golf tour season begins each year in the midst of winter here in New England, the real start of the golf season is in June. After a long and cold fall and winter, courses in New England are ready for another season and amateur events are in full swing with conditions and weather finally coming together; it is by all measures “Prime Time”. June is U.S. Open month and at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, about a 4-5 hour drive from us. This year’s event has already created a major buzz in the golf world. Tiger Woods, who has won four times already in 2013 with wins at the Farmers, The World Golf Championship, The Arnold Palmer and The Players Championship, is off to one of the best starts in his career. Tiger has entered only seven events this season and won four of them; some say Tiger is not back yet, how it that possible? Tiger won his last major five years to the day on June 16th, which is the date of the final round on the 113th U.S. Open at Merion, stay tuned. At the finish of the U.S. Open each year, the tour makes their way to New England for The Travelers Championship on June 17th – 23rd at the TPC River Highlands course in greater Hartford. Each year a host of Team New England Tour players come home to the local fans. Keegan Bradley, JJ Henry, Scott Stallings, Tim Petrovic, James Driscoll and Brett Quigley are all expected at this year’s event. The TPC River Highlands Course is a great venue for fans to get up close with their Local tour players. On the heels of the Travelers is a fan favorite in New England The CVS Caremark Charity Classic held at Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, RI. Billy Andrade and Brad Faxon bring some of the best from all the tours to the shores of Narragansett Bay for a taste of Rhode Island hospitality. Golf getaways with friends whether it be your weekly foursome, your relatives or a handful of likeminded couples are all about the camaraderie, playing together, eating together and lifting a glass or two. Typically there’s betting on everything you can think of but the “prize” is not as important as the bragging rights. The whole idea is to have fun. To optomize the group golf getaway, it helps if you are all staying in the same place or in adjacent rooms with a common meeting area stocked with snacks, drinks and breakfast food. That’s why golf condos work so well providing a place you can hang out, eat take-out while watching a game, grab a beer from the fridge and generally do what guys (or girls) do. Often these places have kitchens, counter-top bars, multiple TVs, DVD players, fireplaces, patios and other comforts. Some even have pool tables, hot tubs, foosballs, ping pong, and saunas. Jayme Parker: A purist in media and golf NESN’s Jayme Parker is a tough and talented media veteran who does not mince words about her chosen career. “Our business should be about the job, the work, and the experience that you have,” says Parker, whose NESN career began in 1996. “Back in the day, you knew all the beat reporters for each team. I could trust them, and they knew they could trust me.” The Bristol, CT native studied at Central Connecticut State and holds a Masters Degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College. She began her career at ESPN2 and has worked as an assistant director on “Seinfeld” and a news writer for WCVB, WHDH, and WBZ-TV. Parker’s intro to golf was slightly less impressive than her media resume. “It was around 1998 and Tim Naehring was playing for the Red Sox. He told me that I just had to play in his golf tournament. I had no clubs, so I went to Sports Authority. “At the tournament, I was literally unwrapping a different club as I got to each hole. I’m sure my group was thrilled to be playing with me. I almost hit (former Red Sox outfielder) Darren Bragg in the head, and Bobby Orr was playfully ridiculing me all day. The funny thing is that he and I could not be closer now.” The competitive Parker is a celebrity tournament regular. She relates, “Sometimes, I’ll get a good stroke on it. I actually won the long drive contest for women at Doug Flutie’s tournament two years in a row. I’ve won all these clubs and I have no idea what to do with them.” Parker’s golf labor of love is the Liberty Mutual Invitational Tournament benefitting Uplifting Athletes. The event is spearheaded by Mark Herzlich, the former Boston College and current New York Giants linebacker who was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma while in college. Says Parker, “As the sideline reporter for BC football, I got to know the Herzlich family. When Mark was diagnosed with cancer, his father called me first, before it went public. We drove to Wayne, PA to interview Mark and his family. I eventually asked Mark

how he would feel if I started a golf tournament on his behalf.” This year’s Herzlich tournament is at Pinehills on July 2. Scheduled golfers include Orr, Wakefield, Bourque, Jim Rice, and Shawn Thornton. Proceeds benefit Ewing Sarcoma research. Causes such as these and life in the tough grind of Boston media have given Parker unique perspective. She relates, “I’ve had the chance to cover Boston sports at a time when every team has won the championship, but family is my top priority. As a kid, I loved playing Little League, and I could hit the ball like nobody’s business!” These days, Parker is still hitting the ball, albeit a golf ball. The classy and gifted reporter sees a higher value in such endeavors. “The tournaments are less about being really good at golf and more about establishing relationships. To me, this business is all about mutual respect. European Summer Love

Americans have long had a romance with Europe and this is most prevalent during the summer time. Tons of Americans, ages 16 to 66, flock to Europe looking for love and find it in art, architecture, language, food, wine, people and golf. While many times you hear of people going on a designated golf trip to a location with just the idea of golfing. A different approach is to go to a destination based on other criteria and include “experiential golf”. Places perhaps not as well known for golf but rich in history, food and spectacular settings where you can find a unique golf experience like a diamond in the rough. Two bucket list places that take your breath away are Sicily, Italy and Beaune, France. Sicily is an incredible island with a very rich Greek and Roman history dating back as early as 8000 BC. Taormina, the small town on the east coast of the island has been a very popular tourist destination since the 19th century. The symbol Sicily is most recognized for is perhaps Mount Etna, with a height of 10,890 feet; it is the tallest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world and is in an almost constant state of activity. Il Pìcciolo Golf Club was the first golf course developed in Sicily in 1989. Designed by architect Luigi Rota Caremoli, the only Italian to be admitted to the British Golf Course Architects, this par 72, 18 hole course is nestled between oaks trees, fig trees, vineyards and hazelnut trees. The course is built on the slope of Mt. Etna, has a great deal of black lava rock throughout the course and many of the holes have spectacular views of the volcano. The head golf professional, Norman Johnston, played the first 9 holes with us and shared photos and video from the helicopter ride he had done a few days prior over Mt. Etna. We were clearly able to see mini eruptions that are going on inside this still active

volcano. Mid fairway he stopped, picked some figs off the tree and we ate them while we walked to the green. www.ilpicciologolf.com It has turned out to be by far one of my most unique and pleasurable golf experiences. There are some wonderful and distinctive wines that are made from vineyards that surround Mt. Etna. One in particular that offers a tour and tasting is the Cottanera winery. Their wines are made from grapes grown at high altitude, on rich, volcanic lands. Their red and whites are distinct and well-balanced wines given the volcanic soil and region they are produced. Another special European town is Beaune, France. Beaune is the heart of the Burgundy wine region and one of the key wine centers in France. The annual wine auction of the Hospices de Beaune is the primary wine auction in France. The town is surrounded by some of the world’s most famous wine villages and vineyards including Pommard, Meursault, and Puligny-Montrachet. In the heart of the Cote de Beaune, the Hostellerie de Levernois is a large, white bourgeois house that has been converted to a hotel. The hotel and restaurant are surrounded by an elegant French-style garden and situated in a 11 acres park in the middle of the Burgundy vineyards and next to the Golf Course of Beaune Levernois. Levernois has a Michelin starred gourmet restaurant, an exceptional wine cellar and a bistro all of which seamlessly blend tradition and modernity. In the ancient kitchen there is a double-hearth chimney that dates back to 1750. The golf course adjacent to the hotel is a public facility and a pleasant 18 hole par 72 golf course with 9 lakes and many sand traps. Another Tiger Woods Drop Controversy at The Players Championship

The way the year is going, Tiger Woods might start carrying a laminated copy of Rule 26 in his back pocket in lieu of his yardage book. Just when the controversy surrounding his drop on the 15th hole in the second round of the Masters tournament had seemed to subside, Woods found himself embroiled in yet another drop controversy after his tee shot on the 14th hole in the final round of The Players Championship hooked into a lateral water hazard. After consulting with his playing competitor, Casey Wittenberg, Woods dropped the ball outside the hazard approximately 255 yards from the pin. Some observers, including NBC commentator Johnny Miller, thought the ball crossed the hazard line much closer to the tee, and questioned the drop. If a ball lands in a lateral water hazard (marked by red stakes), one option is to drop the ball outside the hazard within two club lengths (not nearer the hole) from the point where the ball last crossed the margin of the hazard. If a player drops at an incorrect spot, he is penalized two strokes for playing from a wrong place. Determining the point a ball last crossed the hazard margin can be difficult given depth perception and ball flight factors. Recognizing that precision might not be possible in all cases, the Rules of Golf defer to the best judgment of the player and his fellow competitors. Assume a player and a fellow competitor determine the relevant point, and the player drops

and plays his next stroke from that point. Later, it is determined based on other information that the ball actually crossed the hazard line 20 yards beyond that point. Decision 26-1/17 explains that there is no penalty, on the theory that the player made an honest judgment as to the point at which the ball crossed the margin of the hazard. Rules officials at The Players Championship applied the rationale of Decision 26-1/17 in determining that Woods’ drop was legitimate. Mark Russell, the PGA Tour’s vice president of rules and competitions, explained that, barring any definitive evidence to the contrary, officials must defer to the player, his caddie, and other players in the group. “Without definitive evidence, the point where Woods’ ball last crossed the lateral water hazard is determined through best judgment by Woods and his fellow competitor,” said Russell. When questioned by officials, Wittenberg was emphatic that he had isolated the correct point. The Rules of Golf presume that players adhere to the “Spirit of the Game” by playing with integrity and calling infractions on themselves. In most cases, play is conducted without the supervision of officials. In many cases, players must exercise judgment in applying the Rules. The resolution of the propriety of Woods’ drop at The Players Championship is a good example of deference to player judgment. Of course, in most cases $1.7 million is not on the line!

Here you are in the Caribbean, anxious to play those ocean holes on Teeth of the Dog (wait for it), but absolutely astounded by the layout of this rigorous up, down, and all around fun nine. At the turn, the restaurant serves great fare as well as the Chavon River focal point. Forward to the Dye Fore Lagos, meaning lakes, all intricately laced with rocks, variegated succulents and ferns. It is devoid of housing, unlike the Dye Fore Marina nine with views, naturally of the marina, but also sprawling homesteads uniquely architected, creatively and impeccably landscaped. Golf meets “Homes of the Rich and Famous” on this fabulous course. Speaking of famous, Marc Anthony, Shakira,

the Kohlers and Michael Jordan among others, arrive without fear of paparazzi. After our round at Teeth of the Dog (wait for it), “The Mechanic” Jimenez teed it up while Yankees’ catcher, Rick Cerone shared a drink at LaCana Bar & Lounge where live music calls for Merengue in the evenings. Can’t dance? The lovely young escorts of both genders are happy to teach. Ay caramba! The muddled mojito gets our high five, delivered poolside, or at Playa Minitas where a wall of sea rocks form a natural enclosure by the creamy sand beach for all the aquatic activities - snorkeling, windsurfing, sailing, paddle boarding and kayaking. Paddle boarding activated all muscles while providing comedic relief as the waves and wind challenged our maiden voyage. It looks so easy and probably is when you get the hang of it. The sea claimed a pair of sunglasses during one fall but only momentarily as they were easily spotted in the clear water along with tiny brilliant blue fish. We checked off snorkeling without donning a mask. Exhausted, we relaxed to the sound of gentle lapping waves and echo of voices repeating, ”The water is perfect.” It really is. Ready waiters cater to lounging sunbathers. There is no wanting for food or drinks

with eight available restaurants throughout Casa de Campo. Inclusive packages are recommended to fuel all rounds, the next perhaps being The Links, shorter on distance but long on personality. Save some sporting time for the Shooting Center and learn the truth about gun fun, then check out the Equestrian Center, both a dude ranch and polo club. Play or watch traditionally on horseback or donkey back, like donkey basketball games of yesteryear. Finally - Teeth of the Dog is “Pebblesque” but at sea level. Benign holes leading to the crescendo of biting ocean play, creates a symphony of golf. Intimidating at first, the greens seem to hang over the sea but the ocean becomes so enticing, it is tempting to go for a dip, perhaps seeking lost balls! The distraction may yield some ugly golf shots but the camera shots are superb. Shake off any bad scores or the dog might still nip at your heels as the ocean holes continue. Celebrity Golfer: Bobby Clampett by Leigh MacKay

Touring pro first, CBS Sports analyst next, now Impact-based TM teacher, Bobby Clampett’s love for golf has provided him with diverse and fulfilling callings. Raised on the Monterey Peninsula, Clampett, now 53, attended the Robert Louis Stevenson School on 17Mile Drive and then BYU, where he was a three-time All-American and a two-time NCAA Player of the Year. The low amateur in the 1978 U.S. Open and the 1979 Masters, Clampett attributed his success to Homer Kelley’s magnum opus “The Golfing Machine.” Clampett played on the PGA Tour from 1980 to 1995, winning once, finishing in the Top-10 33 times, and amassing more than $1.8 million. Many people remember his 1982 “Swoon at Royal Troon,” where he had a seven-shot lead in The Open with 31 holes remaining but shot 78-77 to finish 10th. During this time period, Clampett took many lessons to perfect his swing style but did not find the answer he sought. He left the Tour in 1996 and competitive golf for 15 years to become a full-time CBS golf analyst. During his time in the booth, he studied the players in their impact zones, returned to Homer Kelley’s text, and finally found the key to game improvement. Clampett said, “The problem with golf instruction is that players take lessons but don’t show progress. All too often the emphasis is on changing the player’s swing style, with disappointing results. That’s what happened to me and led me off the Tour and into the broadcast booth. But that’s also what led me to the discovery of Impact-based teaching.” In 2007 Clampett published his best-selling book, “The Impact Zone: Mastering Golf’s Moment of Truth,” and followed it up in 2012 with his fourvolume DVD “The Impact Zone Training System.” Clampett also became the first Tour player to be designated a PGA Certified Professional and is on track to achieve Master Certification (also a first) in instruction. And he has created his own Impact Zone instructor certification program with more than 100 teaching professionals employing his system. Clampett currently enjoys an enviable triple play: He’s in his fourth year on the Champions Tour, having made more than $1 million by practicing what he preaches. He still returns to TV broadcasting occasion-

ally, and he also spends time with students and professionals, espousing his Impact Zone fundamentals. NEGM: What do you remember most about your youth on the Monterey Peninsula? BC: I had a remarkable opportunity. I had Pebble Beach and Spyglass in my backyard, and I had the unwavering support and help of the school, golf instructors, friends, and family—especially my mother. All these elements were instrumental in my careers as they unfolded. NEGM: What did you learn from your disappointing finish in the 1982 Open at Royal Troon? BC: I learned that it’s part of the professional game, that a very fine line exists between winning and losing, and that everything in life happens for a reason. That moment in my life, however, has in no way prevented me from being blessed both in all my endeavors and with my wonderful wife Marianna and our family. NEGM: What players did you particularly enjoy playing with on Tour? BC: Johnny Miller for one. Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were my mentors. Lee Trevino, also. I played, traveled, and lived within the world of superstars. Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman were good friends on Tour and now again on the Champions Tour. NEGM: What’s great about working for CBS Sports? BC: The experience of being part of a team. Team play on Tour is a rarity, but Frank Chirkinian, the incomparable producer, instilled the team concept in me in the booth. And I love the team I work with. NEGM: Who would be in your Dream Foursome? BC: I never got to play with Byron Nelson or Ben Hogan, and I have never played with Tiger Woods. I’ve

played with just about everybody else. NEGM: Are you involved in charity work? BC: Charities are very important to me. After the death of my daughter, I founded the Sara E. Clampett Charitable Trust that supports a variety of important causes. I’m passionate about the First Tee, for what it does both for golf and for kids. I’m involved in organizations that prevent child abuse and sponsor Boys and Girls Clubs. NEGM: What attracted you to Homer Kelley’s book, “The Golfing Machine”? BC: It is a unique golf textbook. When I was in my teens, Quail Lodge GC pro Ben Doyle became the book’s first authorized instructor and imparted its knowledge to me. Considered by many to be the most complex golf book ever written, it describes the swing’s 24 components and their 15 variations. I came to embrace two crucial ideas: (1) Homer was ground break-

ing in his explication of the flat left wrist at impact. (2) Because Homer realized that there are almost an infinite number of swing styles, his focus was not on teaching a swing style but on teaching what matters the most, the impact zone itself and the laws of impact. NEGM: Are your book “The Impact Zone” (2007) and the DVD set “The Impact Zone Training System” (2012) sequels? BC: No, not really sequels. Homer was a pioneer in the Impact-based movement, and I’ve tried to distill the essence of “The Golfing Machine” into a central premise that is easier to comprehend and utilize. I wanted to communicate one clear, concise idea. Understanding the impact zone is simple, and transferring that understanding to the swing itself is equally easy. My students—and you can see their testimonials in DVD #3—will say to me at the end of the lesson, “That’s it? That’s all I have to do?” NEGM: What can you promise that a recreational golfer will learn from this technique? BC: Recreational golfers believe that their games will improve if they find the right swing style. However, if they change their swing style but not their impact zone, then they’ve changed nothing. I promise a revelation, a completely new way of looking at things. I promise that, with Impact-based training, golfers will understand their own cause-and-effect relationships, and golf will no longer be an enigma and a mystery. we needed to make serious changes.” The renovations totaled $100,000 and six months to complete, but the course was only closed when the weather wouldn’t allow tee times. The new renovations are in place including remodeled, leveled and reshaped tee boxes; repaired golf cart paths, complete with Cape Cod seashells to replace the gravel; new directional signs for increased speed of play; new benches and updated refreshment areas. Twin Brooks Golf Course has daily play, leagues and offers lessons at Cape Cod Golf School all year round. The course is open from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Beverly Golf & Tennis Club

If the shoe fits . . . wear it. That old adage certainly holds true at Beverly Golf & Tennis Club. It is where Golf Facilities Management Inc. came in three years ago and has put its best foot forward by working aggressively to restore the historic course and clubhouse. Beverly Golf & Tennis Club was built in 1910 by United Shoe Machinery Corp., which at the time was one of the world’s leading manufacturers of shoemaking equipment. It was originally a social and recreational facility for United Shoe employees.  The city of Beverly bought it in the late 1970’s and put it out to bid. After a period of neglect from previous management in 2001-08, GFMI won the bid in 2010 and has been proactive in managing the facility with a five-year lease and a five-year option. The relationship between GFMI and the city of Beverly has been harmonious, as the city has invested $2 million into the property through GFMI for capital improvements. Tee boxes, bunkers, mounding, cart paths, and over 1-½ miles of drainage have all been upgraded. Right now, the vintage clubhouse is receiving a major facelift.  “It’s a good situation for us and them – knowing how to work with a municipality and knowing how to run a golf course,” said Chris Carter, a GFMI partner and the head golf professional at Hillview G.C. in North Reading, which is also run by GFMI. “Beverly was neglected for a long time, but we’re bringing it back,” said Carter. “Steve Murphy (co-partner) and Brian McHugh (superintendent) are magicians. They’re not afraid to get their hands

dirty, and have worked their magic. The city of Beverly golf commission has also been an instrumental partner with a passion to help restore and upkeep a classic golf course.” Carter is not kidding when he calls it a classic. Golfers don’t have the luxury of any easy opening holes. Holes 1 and 2 are successive, 400-plus yard monsters, followed by a blind, uphill par-3 third hole. A couple of things stand out at Beverly. There are no green side bunkers through the first four holes. Also, there are no easy par-3’s out of the four, with three of them playing from at least 195 yards from the back tees. The 8th hole is a majorleague, par-5 at 580 yards that would even challenge the professionals. No. 11 (245 yards) and No. 12 (195 yards) are long, back-to-back par-3, and 16, 17, and 18 is a wonderful stretch of finishing holes that meanders nicely through the lay of the land.  “Beverly Golf & Tennis Club is a public course with a true championship layout,” said Carter. “It attracts better players and can be very demanding off the tee with a lot of blind shots.” Even the Mass. There is one word that comes to mind when playing a round of golf at Hillview Golf Course in North Reading, MA – fun. That’s probably the reason why Hillview averages nearly 50,000 starts each golf season, especially with senior golfers who like to take advantage of the $16 special for nine holes from Monday through Thursday. Golf Facilities Management Inc. has been getting a lot of notoriety for its resuscitation of the Beverly Golf & Tennis Club over the last three years, but it must be noted that GFMI first made its mark at Hillview 25 years ago. That’s when it took over a former private club and transformed it into a popular public course with no memberships or season passes.  GFMI is operated by Chris Carter, the head golf professional at Hillview who bought into GFMI in 1998, along with his partner Steve Murphy. With additional direction from course superintendent Matthew Grady, they have managed to present a very player-friendly course with a variety of shot selections for golfers of all ages, male or female, and with course conditions on par with that of a lot of private courses From a management’s perspective, we’re trying to be consistent with the two facilities in terms of what we put into it,” said Carter, who was the 2010 New England PGA Professional of the Year. “ A lot of golfers don’t like to begin a round with a par-5, but Hillview’s first hole is a fair, honest par-5 without too much degree of difficulty and plenty of room for an errant shot to the right. The third hole is a par-4, 410-yard challenger that is free of any green side bunkers. All you have to do is just get the ball there. The fifth hole is a decision maker off the

tee, with the safe choice being a hybrid to a narrow fairway landing area. For a short, 311-yard hole, the 11th is quirky with a sneaky, blind bunker fronting the green on a downhill that is not in view from the initial approach shot. The course finishes up with a long, par-3 16th that ranges anywhere from 208 to 236 yards from the tips, followed by a short, uphill 241-yard, par-4 17th that can easily be reached, but watch out for another blind green side bunker with severe sloping. No. 18 is one of those rare, par-3 finishing holes, which plays left-to-right to 185 yards. The 7th fairway was completely redone this year with new drainage and sod, and 11 new greens have been built in the last 15 years. Know is the time when Hillview begins to kick things into gear for junior golfers. It is already promoting national initiatives, Get Golf Ready and Tee It Forward, throughout the season. In July, however, Carter will be running a free clinic every Monday for boys and girls ages 5 to 17 and is expecting 50-100 juniors every week. Plus, if time and space availability allows it, Carter will let the juniors go out on the course for a number of holes. Hillview will also be hosting the New England PGA Junior Match Play Championship and a U.S. Kids Golf Boston Summer Tour event in July. I’m huge on junior golf,” said Carter. “It’s the future of the game. And Hillview supports that as a fun place to play, less expensive, and in better condition. The green with a small perimeter of rough measured 270 sq. ft. which is plenty big enough for 10 foot putts, makeable chips and short pitch shots. The install went seamlessly. Not only was I impressed with the quality of synthetic turf, design, workmanship etc. but I was more than satisfied with the level of customer service and appreciation for my property by

the 360 Team. The property was in better shape after they left and the landscape more appealing. After a couple days the green was ready for some action. To date the green has been completely tested. Perfect Putts by Ed Travis No matter how diligent you are, keeping up-to-date with the many new putter models introduced each month takes a bit of work. For example this year, in the just the few months since the PGA Merchandise Show, at least two dozen new putters have come to market, each vying for your attention…and dollars. With that in mind NEGM has distilled down the recent (and a couple not so recent) introductions to those we like and think are worthy of consideration if you are looking to make an addition to the inventory of flat sticks you already own. These putters will also be among the nominees for the yearend New England Golf Monthly 2013 Equipment Awards. And finally, there was no preferential order in which they appear since it is alphabetical by maker.

Axis 1 Putters

Luis Pedraza’s Axis 1 Putters may be just the thing for belly- and broomstick-length users now that the United States Golf Association hasbanned anchored strokes. The Axis 1 is balanced so that on the back stroke it doesn’t open to the intended line as do other putters because of their weighting nor does it close to the line on the through stroke. The weight positioning of the three Axis 1 models, Eagle, Joey and Umbra, is forward and accomplished by the use of a counterweight in the heel. This places the center of gravity at the point of contact with the ball and directly in line with the axis of the triple bend shaft. The overall result of Pedraza’s design insight is a back and through straight line stroke without the need to anchor the butt of the putter, essentially the same as what is achieved using the nonstandard length putters.

Bettinardi Golf

Founder Bob Bettinardi has the reputation of being one of the best designers in the business. Our attention was drawn to the Studio Stock 15 face balanced mallet model with a double bend shaft and a traditional pear shaped head. It has heel and toe weighting and Bettinardi’s new hexagonal design milled into the face which he says produces a softer feel at impact. The company and Bettinardi are also quick to point out all his putters including the Studio Stock 15 are milled in the U.S.

Odyssey Golf

The black and white sections of the Versa are certainly distinctive but they aren’t there just for the looks. The company points out they make excellent alignment aids and in our experience they do the job well though to be fair, some people who tried the Versa don’t like them. The line includes both mallets and blades and all have Odyssey’s popular White Hot insert. Each model head has various configurations of the alternating black and white sections from which you may choose.

Rife Putter

The original Two-Bar Putter is still popular and seen in use on almost every golf course but Rife hopes to attract old users and new ones to their new Vault 001 series. One of the models, the Legend mallet, is even an update of the Two-Bar. The 14 models in the Vault 001 series each have Rife’s horizontally grooved face design and styles run from the Iconic (a blade with a plumber’s neck hosel) to the Legend plus there’s a really large mallet named appropriately the Titan. Rife also included in the series a first for them a bi-metal design named Prodigy, which has a steel midsection and face but an aluminum body.

TaylorMade Golf

The Spider Blade & Daddy Long Legs designs break new ground as far as major putter makers are concerned. In fact, TMaG seems to be preparing the way should there be a change in the Rules of Golf banning the use of anchored putting strokes. Both putters have extremely high resistance to twisting – higher than other comparable putters – due to counterbalancing of the head weight with a longer and heavier grip. This directly addresses the advantage users of bellies and broomsticks have since the anchored motion creates more putter head stability as compared to non-anchored strokes made with traditional length putters. While at this writing the USGA has not announced an anchored putting ban, should that happen TMaG has the Spider Blade and Daddy Long Legs well positioned. Company officials haven’t said directly, but clearly from what they have said, is the inference the counterbalanced Spider Blade and Daddy Long Legs are a viable alternative to long putters.

Tour Edge Golf

The David Glod Tour Proto putters pass the ‘good looks’ test. Each is CNC milled from a block of carbon steel and the face has what Tour Edge calls an X-grip pattern to produce less skidding after impact. All have a hand rolled leading edge which comes in handy when it’s necessary to putt from the fringe. The series includes three designs and each has a high-toe profile to compensate for the tendency to raise the toe at address causing putts to be pulled left. There’s a choice of three models (Blade, Anser, and Half Mallet) with either a silver-bead or black PVD finish.

Yes! Golf

Yes has settled its corporate existence as part of Adams Golf which in turn is owned by Taylormade-adidas Golf and the top notch design team headed by Blair Phillip, which in the past has produced so many good putters is still intact. For 2013 they have a new line named i-4 Tech of which the Callie blade as an outstanding example. It has the curved, upward angled face grooves for reduced skidding of all Yes putters and as in all the i-4s, the face is backed with a TPU plastic insert. Four tungsten sole weights to adjust balance and improve the resistance to twisting complete the package.

Kay’s Korner Travelers Championship likely to remain in New England Travelers Championship earns three “Best of” awards by Emily Kay

Travelers Insurance, whose contract with the PGA Tour is slated to expire in 2014, expects to remain as host of the Connecticut tournament that bears its name and that the Hartford-based company rescued from near-oblivion six years ago. “We would love every opportunity to keep going with this,” Andy Bessette, Travelers’ executive VP and chief administrative officer, told us by phone recently. “It’s up to the tour.” The current contract expires in 2014 and the two parties must ink a new pact by end of this August, said Bessette, who noted that he knew of no reason for the tour to want out. “We’ve said pretty openly that we’ve been very pleased [with the Travelers Championship],” Bessette said. “Everything has met or exceeded our expectations and we’re in conversations with the tour right now to make sure that they want us to extend.” Since taking over the former Greater Hartford

Open and Buick Championship in 2007, the Travelers has grown into one of the best events on the tour’s annual calendar, and with good reason: the first of two New England stops (the Deutsche Bank Championship takes place at TPC Boston over Labor Day weekend) attracts some of the biggest names in golf, gives back to its Hartford community in charitable contributions and economic impact, and boasts one of only a handful of local backers. “We’re proud to be one of four or five hometown sponsors on the PGA Tour,” Bessette said. Indeed, there would have been no PGA Tour event at TPC River Highlands in the intervening years without the insurance giant, said tourney director Nathan Grube. In fact, when Buick removed itself from the proceedings at the end of 2005, prospects of seeing tour pros again in Cromwell were extremely dim. “We actually had no date on the calendar. It was literally, actually gone, off the calendar,” said Grube, who noted that plans on a Friday afternoon back then were almost finalized for the course to host a Champions Tour event when Travelers stepped in at the 11th hour. By that Sunday evening, the Travelers Championship was a done deal. Since Travelers signed on, the tourney has garnered a slew of awards -- most recently, Most Fan Friendly, Best Sponsor Integration, Best Use of Players. Catering to fans means offering concerts on the golf course (Three Dog Night will perform on June 22), hosting a junior pro-am for 36 kids who raise the most money for their chosen community charities, and First Tee-related clinics with tour pros. And, of course,there’s the the big, red floating umbrella. During the players’ practice round on Tuesday, the golfer who hits his ball closest to the Travelers logo in the middle of a pond wins $10,000 for the charity of his choice. New this year will be a celebrity mini-golf tournament on a nine-hole miniature track built between holes one and 18 of the actual course. Two winning teams, comprised of local media and A-listers will earn $2,500 each for designated charities. Philanthropy is a critical part of the tour event, which has raised more than $30 million for local

Specific plans are still evolving, but with two horrific events hitting close to home -- the December massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in nearby Newtown and the Boston Marathon bombings -- tourney organizers will pay special tribute to the victims and families affected by both tragedies. “We want to play any sort of a role in helping [the people of Newtown] heal in any way,” said Grube. “We’re going to try to do whatever we can for them.” This year, a slew of popular players, including 2012 Masters champ Bubba Watson, fan-fave Rickie Fowler, and New England boys Keegan Bradley and James Driscoll, have committed to the event, which launched Watson into superstar status with his first win in 2010. As to whether organizers will ever succeed in luring newly crowned Players Championship winner Tiger Woods to Hartford, Grube gushed about the guys who show up year after year. “We’re thrilled with the field,” he said. “We wouldn’t trade it for anything.” charities since 1952 (when the tourney was the Insurance City Open). The U.S. Open The second major of the year will be underway come June 13th, as Merion Golf Club is set to host its fifth U.S. Open Championship. Merion GC is located in Haverford Township, Pennsylvania, just 11 miles west of Philadelphia. The East Course at Merion has hosted its share of championships, including six U.S. Amateurs, the five U.S. Opens, and a Walker Cup, since it was established in 1896. Measuring at only 6,996 yards, many pundits are expecting Merion to take a beating from the long hitters on TOUR. However, with no par 5s over the last 14 holes, and the typical thick U.S. Open rough, Merion may just stand up to the bombers. The Picks A Group – It’s going to be hard to avoid selecting Tiger Woods to start in the A group at the U.S. Open. Three victories and a T4 in his last four starts are all the evidence you should need. Will this be Tiger’s 15th major, and get him out of his major championship slump? Watching how Tiger has maneuvered his way around golf courses the past couple months, he’s displaying the creativity and shot making skills that his game was lacking the previous few years. Tiger gets the obvious start this week, with another guy who’s name always seems to be near the top of the leaderboard at majors, Graeme McDowell, on the bench. B Group – Jim Furyk and Matt Kuchar will get the starts in the B group. We all witnessed Furyk’s heart-

breaking loss at last year’s Open, where he threw away the Championship over the final few holes. With Merion being the short track that it is, this can play in to Furyk’s favor, who’s not known as one of the longer hitters on TOUR, but who also ranks 11th in Driving Accuracy Percentage. Matt Kuchar is coming off of a solo 2nd place finish at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, his fourth top 10 of the season, and is still in search of his first major victory. Kuchar, who ranks 8th in Scoring Average on TOUR, had a victory earlier in the year at the WGC Accenture Match Play, as well as an 8th place finish at the Masters. C Group – At 40 years old now, time is ticking for Lee Westwood to capture his first major title. He’s having a solid year on both the PGA and European Tours so far this season. On the PGA Tour he’s riding a streak of four consecutive top 10 finishes, which includes a T8 at the Masters. I like Westwood to start this week, with Kevin Streelman on the bench. Team New England Update Tracking the progress of all our players on all the Tours. By: Steve Riggs It is shaping up to be a long season for most of our players of Team New England. There are some rays of sunlight when it comes to players we have come to count on to keep us in the competitive game. We have a group of players who are among the most respected on the four tours because of their talent and work ethic. There is more golf yet to play as our players of TNE continue their work out there.

CHAMPIONS TOUR

Scott Stallings (MA) has earned $700,101 making 6 cuts in 15 starts with 2 top ten and 3 top 25 finishes. By far, Scott has had 2 near wins at the Humana Challenge and recently the Colonial. Scott’s scoring average is up to 71.17 over last month. Stallings’ tendency for gaining traction in the 2nd half of the season puts him on track for another great season.

Brad Faxon (RI) has earned $292,821 in 9 events this season including his victory with Jeff Sluman at the Legands of Golf. Additionally, Brad has 1 top ten and 2 top twenty five finishes with a scoring average that has increased to 73.52 over last month.

Keegan Bradley (VT) has seen his game go south this year climbing back out of that scoring ‘black hole’. As of this writing, post Colonial, finds Keegan having made 11 cuts in 14 starts with 1 second, 1 third, 6 top ten and 8 top twenty five finishes thus far. A scoring average of 69.96 and earnings of $2,153,947 are what we have come to expect from this, (almost), 27 year old who is only in year three of his PGA TOUR career.

Dana Quigley (MA) continues to compete while remaining focused on son Devon’s rehabilitation and continued progress from the brain injury suffered. Dana’s earnings are $6,707 after 5 events with a scoring average of 75.2. At 66, Dana Quigley is the original Iron Man.

J.J. Henry (CT) has made 8 cuts in 14 starts with 1 top 25 finish this year. Henry’s earnings, post Colonial, are $259,615 with a scoring average of 71.74. J.J. is in roughly the same place, earnings wise, that he was a year ago. A consistent player for TNE on the PGA Tour since 1999, I remain very optimistic Henry will continue his solid play moving forward. James Driscoll (MA) has made 10 cuts in 15 starts thus far in 2013. A top ten and 2 top 25 finishes set James’ earnings at $445,359 and a scoring average that has climbed to 71.12. The nickname ‘Bubble Boy’ could be replaced with the New Ironman as he is one of TNE’s grinding tour players of the 21st century. Tim Petrovic (MA) has combined earnings of $20,808 on both the PGA and Web. Com tours. Tim’s combined scoring average is 71.11. Petrovic is wasting no time playing wherever he can in an effort to rejoin the PGA TOUR as a regular member. A respected competitor for TNE with career earnings of $11,948,789, Tim simply needs to find his game.

Allen Doyle (RI) at 64 has competed in 5 events so far in 2013. Allen’s earnings are $16,621 with a scoring average of 76.64. A somewhat unorthodox swing continues to serve this Woonsocket, RI, native well. Doyle’s career earnings are $13,384,756 making Doyle a respected member of the Champions Tour.

LPGA TOUR Alison Walshe (MA) has made the cut in 7 of 9 starts with earnings of $72,347. Allison’s scoring average has improved over last month to 71.2. Walshe had a good year in 2012 earning $194,519 with 1 top 10 finish. Alison’s play thus far in 2013 has her on track for another good year. Anna Grzebien (RI) remains on the LPGA TOUR roster this year. Stay tuned as we see if Anna will make a start this year. Congratulations Mom!

Billy Andrade (RI) has returned to competitive play. While still on the PGA TOUR roster, Billy is playing on the Web.Com Tour and has made 1 cut in 3 starts earning $2,085 with a scoring average of 73.13. With career earnings of $12,380,805 we welcome Andrade back to the TNE roster! Brett Quigley (RI) is another dual competitor playing PGA and Web.Com tours. Brett has been one of our best players with combined career earnings of $11,453,897.

WEB.COM TOUR Jim Renner (MA) through the Mexico Championship has earned $120,440 making 3 cuts in 9 starts. Jim has 1 second place finish this year. Renner is in 13th position on the Web.Com money list with a scoring average of 70.41. If Jim continues the pace he is on, we will see him back on the PGA Tour in 2014. Patrick Sheehan (MA) has earned $15,917 making 4 cuts in 10 starts with 1 top twenty five finish. Patrick’s scoring average sits at 71.29 at this writing. Sheehan, 43, is no quitter. Although he lost his PGA Tour card in 2011, his dedication proves he is far from finished out there. Brad Adamonis (RI) has made 1 cut in 3 starts this season. Brad has posted earnings of $2,450 with a scoring average of 71.00. Adamonis has been struggling with his swing and game for some time now. It is this writer’s hope that he finds the right combination to unlock the mind-body relationship to put his play where it belongs. We NEED players like Brad!

LPGA SYMETRA FUTURES TOUR Natalie Sheary (CT) has made 1 cut in 2 starts this year earning $1,579 with a scoring average of 75. A good year in 2012, we look forward to the Symetra’s season getting into full swing in order to see Natalie continue her promising career. Molly Aronsson (VT) has made 4 starts thus far in 2013 with earnings of $3,737 and includes 1 top ten finish at the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic. Molly’s scoring average of 74. A slight improvement in her putting stats and Molly is on target for a good year on the Symetra. Briana Vega (MA) has 5 starts under her belt so far this year. Briana’s scoring average is 74.66 with earnings of $1,868. Vega’s talent is not at all in question. A little work on her GIR stat and this writer is optimistic her numbers will reflect the improvement. Libby Smith (VT) is a Futures veteran steadily competing since 2004 has yet to make a start on this year’s Symetra Tour.

Rob Oppenheim (MA) is having a rough season this year on the Web.Com earning $3,600 making just 2 cuts in 9 starts with a scoring average of 72.74. A little improvement in accuracy off the tee, and it is my feeling he will find his game. There is a lot of golf left to play on the Web.Com this year.

What’s News So Hadley’s Mickey Werenski Ends IJGT Career in Style Orlando, FL – The International Junior Golf Tour (IJGT) hosted its 18th Annual Bridgestone Golf Tournament of Champions at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Fla. May 25-27. Grand Cypress Golf Club features 45 holes of Jack Nicklaus Signature golf design with juniors playing the New Course and East and North nine-hole courses. Mickey Werenski of South Hadley, Mass., captured the Boys 15-19 Division after an impressive final round even-par 72. Werenski’s score equaled the lowest round of the day in the division as other players on the leaderboard faltered. Werenski opened his tournament with a 1-under-par 71 to put himself in a prime position to climb the leaderboard for the rest of the tournament. He never dipped outside the top five at any point as his consistent play outlasted everyone. Back-to-back even-par 72s on the final two days were good enough for a three-stroke victory. “This is probably the best I have been playing lately for the past few weeks,” Werenski said. “I definitely had a good feeling about it for about two weeks now. I wanted to close with a bang because I have been so close so many times this year.”

Richy & Mickey Werenski Win MGA Four-Ball Championship at Ledgemont Country Club Seekonk, MA — Everyone knows that they can play well alone, but today Richy Werenski (Orchards GC) and Mickey Werenski (Orchards GC) proved that they are also a dynamic four-ball team. Under cold and windy conditions, the Werenski brothers found a way to dominate both the elements and a difficult Ledgemont Country Club layout to capture the 2013 Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship title. The Werenskis finished with a two-round score of 10-under par 129 to best the team of Andy Drohen (The Ranch GC) and Doug Clapp (Old Sandwich GC) by two strokes. It marks the first time that the Werenski brothers have played in this event and the first MGA Championship title for either brother.

What’s News Former Massachusetts Amateur Champion John Hadges Wins Third Career Norfolk County Classic Title; Kevin Carey Captures Senior Division Title Quincy, MA – Congratulations to two-time Massachusetts Amateur Champion John Hadges (Thorny Lea GC - Easton) who recently captured his third career Norfolk County Classic title at Presidents Golf Course. Kevin Carey (Dennis Pines GC - Dennis) walked about with the senior-division title. The Norfolk County Classic is one of a handful of Regional Events which is part of the MGA’s Player of the Year System.

Patrick Ball and Allen Chase Post Memorable Final-Round Score to Capture 2013 MGA Senior Four-Ball Championship Title Stow, MA — It would have been a day to remember without the hardware, but Patrick Ball (Wachusett CC) and Allen Chase (Westminster CC) are more than happy to accept the James Shea Memorial Trophy following their victory at the 2013 Massachusetts Senior Four-Ball Championship, which was held at Stow Acres Country Club. In just their second year of eligibility for this MGA Championship Proper, Ball and Chase put together a final round score of 9-under par 63 on arguably the tougher North Course to capture the title by a onestroke margin. They finished with a final score of 10-under par 134.

What’s News Bay Staters - Led by Medalist and 2012 MGA Open Champion Mike Welch - Earn Four of Five U.S. Open Local Qualifying Spots Plymouth, MA — Bay State professionals made a statement on Thursday. Facing off against a full field of competitors who hailed from across North America, Massachusetts’s golfers claimed four of the five available spots up for grabs at 2013 U.S. Open Local Qualifying held at Pinehills Golf Club. Leading the way and earning co-medalist honors was Michael Welch (Quincy, MA), The only other player in the field to match that medalist score was Nick Pandelena (Atkinson, NH), who was a standout golfer for St. John’s Prep (Danvers) last year who has since moved on to Boston College. Geoff Sisk (Marshfield, MA) will have advanced to the U.S. Open Championship seven times over the course of his career. He achieved that feat in 1995, 1999, 2003, 2004, 2007 and most recently in 2011. Evan Harmeling (Andover, MA), who just one day earlier carded an identical score at a Massachusetts Open Qualifier held at Indian Ridge Country Club. Ken Lewis (East Sandwich, MA), who - at the age of 31 - relocated to Orlando (FL) to begin a two-year plan to become a successful touring professional. This is Lewis’ second attempt at professional golf.

16TH Annual IRONMAN At TPC Boston Golf Tournament Raises $70,000 for Junior Achievement

The 16th Annual IRONMAN tournament was a huge success. The 60 participating golfers raised $70,000 for Junior Achievement. Caroline Paradis, the President of Junior Achievement of Southern Massachusetts, noted that the event “is quite a draw for avid golfers. Participation means exclusive access to this exceptional course and its facilities, with 36 holes of no-waiting golf.” Paradis credited the two corporate sponsors – Rockland Trust and Webster Bank – for their strong support of the IRONMAN event. Since its inception, the IRONMAN tournament has raised over $1 million and impacted 35,000 students. The proceeds fund programs that provide students with essential financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship skills. “While the location and formant of this event create a unique and highly enjoyable experience for golfers, at the end of the day it’s all about the JA mission which is to provide local students with the

tools they need to attain success,” said Paradis. Various prizes for both golf performance and fundraising were awarded at the dinner reception. Rob Schoening, an Acushnet Company employee and JA volunteer teacher, presented the Harry Schoening IRONMAN Award, named after his father who was involved in JA for over 35 years. This year’s plaque was awarded to Linda Bodenmann from Southcoast Hospitals Group for her top fundraising efforts and golf performance points. Bodenmann quipped that they might have to rename the award “IRONPERSON.” Eric Carlson from Rockland Trust and Bob Lee from Taco, Inc. took home the second and third prizes, respectively. The West Team once again captured the crown. In front of 2100 attendees at this years 100-year celebration of the Ouimet Fund Gala Student Speaker and Ouimet Scholar Julia McCarthy addressed the crowd with her heartfelt story. Some of the most influential people in business and golf in the world today had to fight back tears as Julia addressed the gala with the essence of what the Ouimet Scholarship Fund is all about. The event is the beginning of a yearlong celebration marking the 100-year anniversary of the fund. The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 and in 2012-13 is awarding $1.5 million in needbased scholarships to over 300 students. The 2012-13 awards have brought the fund to a total of $25 million in tuition assistance given to about 5,000 young people since its 1949 inception. Ouimet Scholars have served at least two years as caddies or in pro shop or course superintendent operations in Massachusetts.

Are the rules too complicated? by Tom Gorman

YES. If I were to take a wild guess on how many amateurs have read the entire 210 brain-numbing pages in “The Official Rules of Golf” I’d say thirty percent. How many understand the rules? None, including me! After playing the game (poorly) for decades I admit to only knowing the major rules involving out of bounds, hazards, unplayable lies, wrong ball, bunkers and drop areas. I have no effing clue what an “outside agency” is. Do you call them to collect on winning bets? What dope came up with the term “through the green?” And, is it necessary for the rule book to confuse us with words like rough, semirough, fringe, collar, first-cut, loose impediments, movable and immovable obstructions. Care to guess what “abnormal ground conditions” are? Two things are certain when I stand on the first tee. First, the over/under is 88 and the best bet is to take the over. Second, I carry a rules book in my bag but don’t ask me any rules questions, because they are too damn complicated for me to understand. I can’t imagine what a shwag like Tim Geary would do if his ball came to rest against a rake in a bunker. Can knowing the rules make a difference with a duck hooker or deep-rough thrasher? This sport consists of way too many rules for my simple mind. Rule 1-1 states “…playing a ball with a club from the teeing ground into the hole by a stroke or successive strokes in accordance with the Rules.” I’m getting a migraine already. When was the last time you had a conversation about course rating or slope rating? Few human beings know anything about this topic. Another bizarre term I’ve heard before and again have no idea what it means…“rub of the green.” The nitwits at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, Scotland and the USGA have concocted rules using language that few of us un-

derstand, unless of course, you hold an MBA from Harvard. The game is hard enough without confusing us with batty commandments, nitpicking definitions, idiotic distinctions and blatant contradictions. The ancient and unhonorable Tim Geary thinks the rules are easy to understand because he takes mulligans, gimmes and has been known to apply the Geary Rules of Golf. Did you search unsuccessfully for your ball in the fairway? Don’t panic. All you have to do is declare that it’s Ball Missing in Fairway but Obviously Not Lost and drop another ball in the approximate spot that the original ball must have come to rest. Not only are the rules too confusing for amateurs but apparently Tiger Woods also needs a refresher course. Who would have thought Woods did not know where to drop after hitting his ball into a pond at the 15th hole in round two at The Masters. Wow, the world’s best player and his caddy didn’t know the rule? Most players learn the rules the hard way when a violation occurs that involves them, and subsequently, a disqualification. We will never know why the green jackets at the Masters did not DQ Woods for that rules violation. So is there anyone other than Tim Geary who believes the rules are not complicated? That guy should pull himself away from watching reruns of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. Finally, you know the rules of golf are complicated and problematic and in need of interpretation when there are a number of books published with titles such as “The Rules of Golf in Plain English” and “Golf Rules & Etiquette Crystal Clear” and “Simplifying the Rules of Golf.” (Tom Gorman dislikes following a hairsplitting set of golf rules drafted by a bunch of fussbudget country club WASPs who think that pink and lime green are complimentary colors.)
