After a slow starting spring it looks like we may be ready for some great conditions for golf here in New England. Each new season in golf brings with it our quest to continually learn more, improve more and play more. Golf is a game that is a continual journey for us all. While technology and science continues to improve the tools of the game the essence and process of improving can still only be achieved by ingraining repetition and consistency. Golf more than any other sport requires finite attention to detail for measurable results. It is a great time of year to spend a little time with your golf professional to help you assess where you are and how to develop a proper plan to get to where you wish to be with your game. Each season our May issue is all about the very best in New England golf as voted on all year long by our readers. The best private clubs, public golf facilities, 9-Hole courses, golf instructors and resorts are voted on giving our readers an opportunity to have their say about New England Golf. While the experts may agree or disagree with many of the choices it is solely up to our readers and subscribers to tell us what they think. In the last week or so I saw a Facebook post that Brian Oates, who works in marketing for the Patriots and the Kraft Family of businesses made his first hole in one while in Florida. Brian is someone who understands how to make a difference in life by â&#x20AC;&#x153;Paying it Forwardâ&#x20AC;?. It is a great moment in golf when you make your first hole in one, for some it never happens. Legends of Golf Trail

Blaze the Legends of Golf Trail over The Salamander Collection of nine courses at three Grand Golf Resorts of Florida, so named for the tour greats who have played them and their legendary designers. The Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast is an impressive start with a palatial entrance and Tom Watson’s Conservatory Course at 7776 yards from the tips but with twelve tee box combinations to accommodate all players. We were warned that the bunkers are “so deep you may need ropes to get in and out.” Number 13’s waste bunker is shaped like a tuning fork, from tee to green. Hit the rough Bermuda edge and the music sounds like a horror flick, but then the melody of birds and whistling wind through pines and oaks soothes the soul. It’s not elementary dear Watson, but a Grand course indeed. Jack Nicklaus’ Ocean Course with famed finishing holes, labeled “The Bear Claw” has a long grand finale par 4 along the Atlantic Ocean. Gauge the wind and pick your weapon for the uphill battle. The crescendo of crashing waves peak at the clubhouse. Stroll down the rare stretch of pristine white sand where turtles hatch and starfish sparkle between kokimo rocks as surfers await their perfect wave. Watch from the Atlantic Grill nibbling Tuna Tartare and lobster on sticks. You won’t want to leave Hammock Beach’s balcony views, and friendly staff but just 90 minutes away is the center point of the Legends of Golf Trail.

The Reunion Resort & Club in Orlando draws amateurs and pros worldwide to practice or play. Encountering LPGA winner Julieta Granada with her caddy Mama Rosa was a sweet reunion for us, having won a Pro-Am together. At Annika’s Academy, sister Charlotta, Annika or a hand picked team member, delivers life-changing health, fitness and swing clinics. When golf ready, the Nicklaus Course is a nature center tracking through dense floral marsh over long wooden bridges. Eighteen is tough. All but the forward tees must carry a vast wetland. On the foggy Palmer Course we learned that blind golf is an adaptive hearing game. Ears tune to the ball’s “thud” landing on the green, clunk of a tree connection or splash in the water. Hole seven was a lovely sight as the fog lifted on the drivable par 4, an eagle opportunity. The Watson Course could be titled “Where the Fern Grows,” as it climbs on pin oaks laced with Spanish moss. Number nine is a narrow strip of fairway lined with “now you see them, now you don’t bunkers on both sides. Face them to the green and look back, they are gone, an architectural feat. This course returns to the castle-like Wyndham Grand Resort where villas are a place to call home. Head to the Bar at Eleven with a rooftop pool - a great place to lay out after play or finish the day with a cocktail watching Disney’s fireworks. The Forte has a gourmet flare for fine dining while the Grande Lobby Bar delivers reasonably priced sushi or American bar food at

a visible spot for more friendly reunions. Innisbrook Golf Resort is another 90 minutes away for the final four on the Trail, all aviary courses. On the North Course, a gust of wind fans the lower feathers, like a ballerina’s tutu on a dancing snowy egret stalking its prey. The South Course begins with a symphony of Ospreys calling one another – hunter and sentinel as more of the flock tune in. Their namesake, Osprey Sports Bar is a perfect 19th hole, with fire pits and flat screen TVs on the patio. The Island Course with more water as suspected is home to cranes and waterfowl of all denominations. The Turnberry Pub offers gallery access to the scenic course with terrific food while Packard’s Steakhouse is the place to go for the finest cuts of beef or seafood. While the Legends courses may be played in any order, the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook gives new meaning to the “Grand finale.” A March PGA Tour stop, “The Snake Pit” holes named Moccasin, Rattlesnake, and Copperhead, pose a deadly threat for poorly played shots. All of the Grand Golf Resorts of Florida are top-notch accommodations with water parks, spas, great restaurant choices and superb golf play, making The Legends of Golf Trail one for the bucket list. Pimento sandwiches and fan fashion favorites never go out of style. So you can imagine my delight when I encountered Jake Fitzgerald on golf’s sacred ground, Augusta National, during Masters week. Jake is a retired high school teacher from Boston and a die hard New England Pats fan as expressed by his stylish choice of golf attire. His favorite Boston athlete is Booby Orr as her refers to as his “go to guy”. According to Jake it’s a “cryin’ shame he was done with the Bruins at 28 years

old”. Fitzgerald plays to a 15-18 handicap and this was his first time attending the Masters. He says he is not as concerned with getting his handicap down and prefers to “take a page from Tipp O’Neill’ s book when he said to Joe Moakley “Hit them until you are happy”” The Masters was on Fitzgerald’s Bucket List and his brother Daniel, 8 handicap, won tickets in the lottery. He credits his mother with his sense of fashion. We are just glad he credits the New England Patriots.

PGA of America Promotes Holly Taylor to Head Pro Position at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida Holly Taylor, one of Massachusetts’ most respected head professionals, has just been named the new head pro at the private PGA Country Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. Previously, from 200811, Taylor had been the head pro at PGA Golf Club, the PGA of America’s flagship property and sister course to PGA Country Club. Taylor helped to elevate PGA Golf Club (also known as PGA Village) to its ranking as one of the “75 Best Golf Resorts in North America” by Golf Digest. From 2011 to the present promotion, Taylor has been the director of the award-winning PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance. “Holly brings to PGA Country Club a wealth of knowledge about our facility and members,” said PGA Golf Club GM Jimmy Terry.” In addition, her experience in operating successful and enjoyable member events, along with her expertise in operations, instruction and player development, will greatly benefit our club.” Terry’s appraisal reflects the feelings of the members and staffs of the southeastern Mass courses where she worked and flourished for more than a decade. After serving as an assistant pro at Plymouth CC and Thorny Lea in Brockton, she became the head professional at Rockland GC, Waverly Oaks in Plymouth, Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, and South Shore CC in Hingham. She was then honored for her work in player development by the PGA’s President’s Council on Growing the Game. Holly Taylor said of her six years at PGA Golf Club, “It is the perfect venue for PGA professionals either to bring their members for a golf trip or to recommend the resort for buddy or couples trips. The weather is spectacular in winter as we are below the frost line. There are three championship golf courses to choose from, a state-of-the-art practice facility, affordable accommodations,

and great food.” To be more specific, PGA Golf Club offers two courses by Tom Fazio—Wanamaker and Ryder— and one by Pete Dye. The Wanamaker honors Rodman Wanamaker, who helped establish the PGA of America and whose name is attached to the PGA Championship trophy. The Ryder honors Samuel Ryder of the Ryder Cup matches. All 36 tees have plaques that unveil the storied lore of both the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup. Pete Dye, for his eponymous creation, used the native environment to fashion a links-style course reminiscent of the British Isles. The layout can be “Dye-abolical” with its multiple pot and grass bunkers, vast coquina waste areas, wiry rough, forced carries, and just as quick but smaller and narrower and more undulating Champion greens. All three courses offer GPS systems on the carts. The clubhouse displays priceless PGA memorabilia, and the on-site PGA Museum of Golf is not to be missed. Open to the public at no cost and offering a new complimentary cell phone walking tour, it traces the history of the PGA of America through its major championship and the Ryder Cup. The 35-acre PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance is a golf instruction, practice, technology, and fitness park all in one. Named a “2013 Golf Range Association of America Top 50 Range,” the center includes more than 100 hitting stations (many weather-protected), shortgame practice areas, putting greens, and three practice holes. Yarmouth’s Bass River Golf Course is one of Cape Cod’s best and oldest courses. Opened in 1900 as a private nine hole club, the course has grown and flourished over it’s 100 plus years. If it was good enough for Harry, Bobby and Francis, it’s good enough for me. By the way that’s golf legends Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet and Bobby Jones. The first U.S. Open was played at Newport Country Club in 1895. That was also the year when Fall River Country Club opened as a nine hole golf course. It was sculptured out of the rolling terrain on the banks of the Taunton River and soon earned a reputation as one of the most scenic and challenging courses in New England. When Harry Vardon, Francis Ouimet and Bobby Jones traveled to major tournaments in the New England area they would always stop by at Fall River Country Club to fine tune their games on this challenging course. Back in 1900, Vardon established a course record by shooting

a 73. Remember that was back when the shafts were made from hickory not graphite. Head Pro Ben Kilburn took me for a tour of the course. “I have played some of the top courses on the east coast, but when I first played Fall River I just fell in love with the place,” said Ben. We started at the 10th hole, where the elevated tee sets gives you a clear view of a valley by the river. There is always a steady breeze coming off the water so you need to plan your shots accordingly. In 1976 the famous design team of Cornish and Robinson created another 9 holes to stretch the course out to its current 6,304 yards from the tips. On almost every hole at Fall River you will find either a tee or a green that is elevated and demands careful planning if you wish to score well.

The frequent changes in elevation and water views on 14 of the 18 holes just add to the esthetic quality of this historic course. “The wind direction varies quite a bit which makes each round unique,” said Kilburn. The Peacock on the course was only one part of Sanders’ 24/7 flamboyance. His predilection for drinking, partying, carousing, chasing women, and hobnobbing with celebrities and movie stars—such as Sinatra’s Rat Pack, Evel Knievel, Gene Kelly, Bob Hope, Willie Nelson, Ed McMahon, and presidents George H. W. Bush and Gerald Ford—added another fascinating facet to his memorable attributes.

NEGM: What motivated you to become “The Peacock”? DS: Because I came from an impoverished family, all my clothes were hand-me-downs. I bought my first new shoes when I was 12, and as I paraded down the street in Cedartown, I was thinking, “Everyone’s looking at me and my new shoes.” I loved that feeling. Then I loved the feeling of wearing new pants with a razor-like crease in them. Finally, I just loved the idea of wearing an entire matching ensemble that made me look great and feel great. I still do.

NEGM: Which pros were the most fun to play with and hang out with?

Ultimately, however, everyone remembers that one putt—of no more than 30 inches—at St. Andrews on the 72nd hole in July, 1970, that Sanders did not make. His miscue allowed Jack Nicklaus to back into the next day playoff that Nicklaus won along with The Open championship.

DS: I had so many friends on Tour, it’s tough to single out just a few: Arnold, Chi Chi, Lee, Jimmy Demaret, Porky Oliver, Dutch Harrison, Al Besselink. We would all travel together and share so much time together, going to tournaments, at them, then leaving for the next stop. Today so many of the pros go their own ways.

and the current Tour? DS: In my heyday the Tour didn’t have the purses like today, so we didn’t really place a premium on the money. We really placed it on our friendships— and by that system, I was a very wealthy man. Unfortunately, today, I believe, the Tour seems to be all about dollars and cents. A real shame.

NEGM: Who were the three best players in your prime? On Tour now? DS: These three—Arnold, Gary, and Jack—had the most indomitable desire to win. It was so hard to beat them. Arnold was just a great guy to be around. We enjoyed a lot of special times together. And Laddie, why he wants to live to be the oldest golfer in the world. What an incredible competitor! Jack, well, simply the best clutch player I ever saw. Tiger, Phil, and Rory. NEGM: Do you think Tiger will surpass Jack’s 18 majors? How important is this milestone for Tiger? DS: I do not! Of course, it’s crucial if Tiger wants to replace Jack as the best golfer ever, but I just don’t think he can. His game has deteriorated, and his body, with age, has deteriorated appreciably, too. Also, across the board, there are just so many really good players who can win those majors on any given Sunday.

NEGM: What do you remember about Ben Hogan and your 1967 Ryder Cup experience? DS: Ben only had one purpose as captain of that Ryder Cup team: to win big. Each day he asked me, “Doug, you will win today, won’t you?” I would dutifully reply, “Yes, Captain!” We did win, too, by the most lopsided score in Ryder Cup history: 23.5-8.5.

NEGM: Who would be in your all-time Dream Foursome. DS: Mmmm. I’m dreaming. Got it! Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor. Oh, Leigh, are we talking about a foursome or about golf?

NEGM: What’s keeping you busy these days? DS: I do a lot of corporate and charity golf out-

ings. I also do some motivational speaking. I had a lot of fun writing my first book 130 Ways To Make A Bet, based, naturally, on personal experience and proven profits, and I am putting the finishing touches on my second one, with the working title of Doug Sanders: The Peacock of the Fairways, an autobiographical account of my life after the 1970 Open. Finally, I keep adding to my collection of golf memorabilia, not only from the greatest golfers and the most famous tournaments but also from Hall of Fame athletes, celebrities, presidents, astronauts, and movie stars.

NEGM: You’ve been active with charitable organizations, too. DS: Yes, for a number of years, I ran one of the most popular Senior Tour stops in Houston, the Doug Sanders Celebrity Golf Classic. Innumerable charities profited from the event, and it was so successful that President George H. W. Bush played in it two years while in the White House. In 1995, I had both President Bush and President Ford play. Now, my number one priority is junior golf and the Doug Sanders International Junior Championship. It began back in 1978. I bring together the best players, boys and girls 18 and under, from six continents for an annual competition. I want to give back to the game, and this event is a good way to do just that. This year’s tournament will be in Houston in September.

NEGM: In retrospect, you’ve had a good life? DS: Oh, yes, I have been blessed. You know, I was always motivated, and I pretty much always did what I wanted to do. Not always good decisions, mind you, but what I wanted to do. Along with my good friend Frank Sinatra, we were two guys who pretty much lived our lives just like his hit song, “My Way.”

NEGM: Almost 44 years later, do you still reflect on the missed 30 inch putt? DS: Usually, I can go at least five minutes or more without it even crossing my mind!

The Ultimate Boston Sportsman Like Fenway’s Green Monster or the Garden parquet, Brian Oates has been part of the fabric of the Boston sports scene. Before joining The Kraft Sports Group as Executive Director of Sales, Oates worked in sales and marketing for the Red Sox,

His professionalism and work ethic was, at least in part, formed on the golf course as a precocious golf maven. “I started in the sixth grade as a caddie at Oakley Country Club in Watertown,” says Oates, who lives in Newton with wife Maureen and sons Aidan, 10, Owen, 8, and Jackson, 5. “After 6pm, they would let the caddies play. I was just a working kid who needed a job. I think I paid $12.00 for my first golf loop.” Due to his diligence and impeccable business

“I’ve met so many people through golf, different level players and all different ages. It’s that shared experience that is the key. I’m really looking forward to playing more with my sons as they get older.” Oates counts Woodland, Oakley, Boston Golf, Newport, and Winchester among his favorite courses, and his approach to the game is humorously philosophical. He refers to his age as “42, with a body of a 62-year-old” and his handicap as “the worst 9.2 in America.”

Kevin Walsh, Comcast Sports Net Says Oates, “I’ve had some good days where I shoot in the high 70’s and low 80’s. I was actually able to play a lot last year, but let me tell you, there is no correlation between the amount of playing I do, and the amount of ability I have.” In his current work, Oates creates marketing programs for the Patriots, Revolution, Gillette Stadium, and Patriot Place. He sells sponsorships on multimedia platforms and has established relationships with companies such as Bose, CVS, Dunkin Donuts, EMC, , and many more. Like a Ryder Cup golfer, he is proud to represent a top-notch team. “I’ve been fortunate to work with the Kraft family,” says Oates, who has been in the sports marketing field since 1993. “They truly care about people, whether it’s an employee, customer, or client. They are willing to invest in their products and their people, and they are excellent at cultivating relationships. “It’s exciting to work with companies in finding solutions for what they’re trying to accomplish. My work is a little bit like my golf game. I am always looking for ways to improve, and I really enjoy doing it.” Enjoyment aside, Oates inhabits a high pressure and high stakes world. Golf provides a needed change of scenery from the board room. He explains, “When you’re out there playing golf with a client, you develop a rapport and build a relationship based on trust. There’s nothing better than getting out on the golf course. You really get to learn about each other’s common characteristics.” Oates clearly understands the metaphysi-

cal aspects of golf, but he is not above the more visceral thrill of the game. “A few weeks ago in Florida, I was playing at Old Memorial and I got a hole-in-one! It is a true example of how a blind squirrel can sometimes find a nut. “The best part is that I got to share the moment with some really good friends. It was at the fourth hole, about 194 yards from the tee, and I hit a really good five wood!” Oates’s aim is similarly true in his charitable endeavors as Co-Founder and Chairman of Golf Fights Cancer (golffightscancer. org). In April of 2003, Oates and colleague Jay Monahan lost their friend Rob Stevens to cancer. The duo committed to running the Boston Marathon to raise funds for Stevens’ wife and three children. Oates first ran Boston in 1996 and has run each year since 1998. The organization has urged the golf community to get involved, and has raised over $3 million for several cancer-related charities. Says Oates, “Collectively, our group is making a difference, and that is a reflection on the golf community at large. Golf Fights Cancer has helped me form tremendous friendships and really give back. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to help people. I’ve received a lot of good breaks in business, and worked with some great people. In 1902 the Rhode Island Golf Association was formed with 10 of the most historic and prestigious golf clubs in the region, only 5 of the original remain today, Pawtucket CC, Newport CC, Wannamoisett CC, The Agawam Hunt Club and The Misquamicut Club. That was the same year Pawtucket Country Club was founded by 5 businessmen from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. A New Dawn for the McNeil Family At The Old Woodland Greens The former Woodland Greens GC (N. Kingstown, RI), owned by the Guisti family for 30+ years, has been sold. Like Woodland, the new owners, Robert and Traci McNeil and their two sons will continue to embrace the family-oriented atmosphere well known to Woodland. Rob’s brother, Tom and his wife, Edie, will operate the bar and kitchen. This Geoffrey Cornish designed 9-hole public course, built in 1964, has been renamed Kings Crossing Golf Club. Robert McNeil has been in the golf business, professionally, for the past 25 years in a variety of capacities — maintenance, construction of new courses, and designer, on his own, for the past 17 years restoring and renovating courses. President of Northeast Golf Company, Rob is a member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, an elite group of 180 members. Locally, he has done work at Pt. Judith CC, Agawam Hunt CC, rebuilt Mohegan Sun CC, and he has completed restoration work at “The Preserve at Boulder Hills” (formerly Boulder Hills). Why the interest in Woodland Greens? Rob

and Traci commented, “We’ve been looking at golf courses to buy for a long time… searching for the right opportunity, right place. This place fits like a glove…it made sense… living here in North Kingstown, we can get our hands on it and do what we want with it. Many courses needed lots of work and it would have been a challenge to get out of the gate. Here, we can open the doors and play the course while making renovations.” What Rob loves about the course is the Jeff Cornish classic routing design and playability. His vision is to expand and recapture the original fairways and greens lines—getting the course to where it was. “What has happened is the fairways got so narrow, the bunkers became a separate entity. We’ve started to widen and narrow the fairways in the right places, which does a lot strategically. Now the bunkers are captured by the fairway line, so if a ball is heading toward the bunker it will go in.” He plans to enlarge some greens such as on the 3rd hole, where the original green was about 25’ to the right of where it is now. Eventually, it will be behind the right bunker. As for the bunkers, Rob will begin the process this year of artistically designing, building and reconstructing bunkers and they will be a new style unique to Kings Crossing. The McNeils believe in embracing all players at Kings Crossing including women and kids. Believers in the PGA’s “Tee it Forward” initiative they believe in giving kids and beginner golfers a 2,200-yard course. To accommodate all players Rob will build a 5-tee system, which will give the course more flexibility, variety and opportunity to play a true

The Woodland Greens players Chad Spencer, Richard Kelley, George Patton, Rob Aldrich, and Mike Bonnetti brought home the trophy against all odds.

My memories date back almost 20 years ago where I first learned the game of golf at Woodland Greens. The course and clubhouse was always packed with great folks that loved the game. Palopoli’s Picks: The Players Championship

After a little more than a month away from the Sunshine State, the TOUR heads back to Florida on May 8th for what many call the “Fifth Major”, The Players Championship. The Stadium course at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida is home to one of the most recognizable par 3s in the world. The par-3, 132-yard 17th hole, known simply as the “Island Green”, is one of golf’s most recognizable, as well as difficult holes. Over the years it has produced its fair share of drama, and will undoubtedly live up to its reputation again this week. Last year Tiger Woods bested Kevin Streelman, Jeff Maggert, and David Lingmerth by two strokes for what was surprisingly just his second victory at The Players Championship. Woods won’t be back to defend his title this year, as he’s still recovering from back surgery earlier this season.

1. Matt Kuchar Matt Kuchar was knocking on the door for a victory all season and came close a number of times only to falter on Sunday. He finally broke through that to capture his 7th PGA Tour victory at the RBC Heritage last month. Kuchar won the Players in 2012 and his game is in top form right about now. Five top 10s in stroke play events this year to go along with the victory at the RBC and ranks 1st in Scoring Average on TOUR.

2. Sergio Garcia

he tees it up. Scott had a respectable Master defense placing T14, but he was right in the mix before a 76 on Saturday. Three top 10s in only six appearances on TOUR this year and his worst finish is a T25. Ranks 2nd in the All-Around.

4. Rory McIlroy

McIlroy’s game is definitely trending upwards. He’s having a solid year with three top 10s, which including a playoff loss at The Honda Classic, and a T8 at the Masters. He placed T8 at the Players last year.

5. Bubba Watson

TPC Sawgrass is a ball-strikers course and Sergio is one of the best of them and his history there proves it. He won in 2008 and had a T8 last year. Despite a missed cut at the Masters, Garcia is having a solid year both stateside and internationally. He had a solo 3rd at the Shell and a T8 at the Honda Classic earlier this season and ranks 10th in the All-Around Ranking on TOUR.

Rickie Fowler is sporting a new haircut and has also retooled his swing this season under Butch Harmon. It’s been pretty incredible to see how quickly he’s been able to adjust to a brand new swing and see a lot of positive results from it. Fowler made it to the semifinals of the Accenture Match Play and finished 3rd and also placed T6 at the Masters a few weeks ago. He missed the cut here last year, but finished T2 in 2012.

Adam Scott is also a previous champion here, albeit in 2004. He’s a much different player now and is a heavy favorite to win each time

PGA Tour Keegan Bradley, (VT) got a boost in earnings with his 2nd place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Keegan’s earnings are $1,443,715. His scoring average has climbed a little to 70.472. The Vermont native has made 10 cuts in 12 starts. Unfortunately, one of those missed cuts was the Masters. That said, Bradley’s finishes include 1-2nd, 2-top 10 and 7-top 25 finishes. Scott Stallings, (MA) appears to be struggling as he has made 5 cuts in 13 starts since his Farmers Insurance Open win in late January. Scott’s earnings to date remain at $1,195,200, with a scoring average that is 72.015. Stallings’s first trip to the Masters was cut short when he missed the cut. Jim Renner, (MA) is competing on the PGA Tour after regaining his card via the Web.Com Tour. Jim has 2 cuts in 11 starts and one WD, (Withdrawal). Renner T-2nd at the AT&T National Pro-am and has earnings of $631,451 and a scoring average of 72.021.

JJ Henry, (CT) has made 7 cuts in 15 starts with 1 DQ, (Disqualified). Earnings of $273,756 and a scoring average of 71.642 is not typical JJ. Henry’s struggles personify the struggles of several of our TNE players this Spring. Being one of our most even tempered players, it is very unusual for JJ to not sign his card no matter how bad the round. James Driscoll, (MA) has 14 events under his belt at this writing. The new Ironman for TNE has made 9 cuts with earnings of $343,780 and a scoring average of 70.876. Driscoll’s best finish is T-14th at the Puerto Rico Open. James also had three good rounds at the Humana Challenge earlier this year. Tim Petrovic, (MA) continues to play where he can on the PGA Tour making the cut in his 2 starts this year. The Web.Com Tour has been different with Tim making just 1 cut in 4 starts. Tim’s combined earnings are $103,458 with a scoring average currently of 70.611.

Brett Quigley, (RI) has not competed since the Humana Challenge in January. Having lost his Card several years ago, we certainly hope to see Dana back in action soon. He is missed.

Champions Tour Brad Faxon, (RI) has played all 6 events thus far with earnings of $46,005 and a scoring average of 72. Known for his putting, Brad’s conversion statistics show steady improvement. His driving percentages could hold the key. Faxon’s Driving Accuracy could use some work.

Billy Andrade, (RI) in his rookie year on the Champions Tour has earnings of $234,497 with a scoring average of 69.93 at this point in the season. Billy’s first 5 events on the Champions include a 2nd at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. We are glad to see Andrade back in competitive action. Dana Quigley, (MA) has started in 4 of the Tour’s 5 events earning $12,617. The original Iron Man and one of our Ambassadors, at 66, has a scoring average of 72.83. Dana’s remarkable story of overcoming adversity and continuing to compete is one every aspiring tour player can learn from. Quigley’s overall career earnings sit at $14,952,201. Allen Doyle, (RI) has yet to start his 2014 season. Allen, 65, is Team New England’s other Ambassador of Golf. A somewhat unorthodox swing has served the Woonsocket native well. Dana’s overall career earnings sit at $13,834,445.

With a couple of exceptions, Team New England has not had a particularly good April scoring wise. Several of our players seem to be struggling with parts of their games. Driving accuracy and putting percentages seem to be the issues holding several of our TNE member’s back. The key to improvement is simply to relax and stay in the moment. This may sound trite but at this level of play it is true, especially for a group as talented as our Team New England players.

LPGA TOUR Alison Walshe,(MA) has missed 4 cuts in 7 starts on the LPGA Tour with earnings of $28,628 and a scoring average of 73.273. Walshe consistently finishes in the middle of the pack in events she finishes. Sounding like a broken record Alison needs to improve her driving accuracy.

European PGA Tour Peter Uihlein, (MA) is dividing his time between the PGA Tour and European PGA Tour thus far. Peter has made 2 cuts in 6 starts with a T25TH at the Cadillac Championship on the PGA Tour. He has made 2 cuts in 4 starts in Europe. A combined scoring average of 72.57 has increased. Uihlein’s combined earnings sit at $284,346.

WEB.COM TOUR Jon Curran, (MA) broke through in March winning the Brasil Champions event breaking the event scoring record with a blistering -25/259. Jon is 4th on the Web.Com Money List with $168,057 in earnings. He has made 4 cuts in 5 starts on the Web.Com and 1 cut on the PGA Tour. Curran has a scoring average of 68.35. Jeff Curl, (CT) has in fact started his season on the Web.Com. I apologize for the oversight. Curl has made 3 cuts in 4 starts with earnings of $17,331 and a scoring average of 69.43. Jeff is a scrambler who is ranked first in Putting on the Web.Com. Improving his driving accuracy will surely put Curl in the winner’s circle. Brad Adamonis, (RI) competed in his first Web.Com event in mid April. Unfortuantly Brad missed the cut in the Mexico Championship. We certainly hope to see Brad back and competing on a regular basis soon.

LPGA Symetra Futures Tour Brittany Altomare, (MA) has earned $17,344 in 3 starts thus far with an improving scoring average that sits at 71. Altomare placed T-6th in the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic. A rookie in 2013 Brittany has passed her first year earnings in the Symetra’s young 2014 season. Natalie Sheary, (CT) has made 2 cuts in 4 starts with a scoring average of 74.444 and earnings of $1,667. A scrappy competitor, Natalie appears to be working on improvement in a couple areas before she tackles the LPGA Tour for which she is qualified. Molly Aronsson, (VT) has 3 cuts in 4 starts under her belt this season earning $1,439 with a scoring average that has jumped to 74.556 since last month. Improving her putting average is certain to put Molly in a better position as the Symetra season unfolds. Briana Vega, (MA) has yet to start her season on the Symetra Futures Tour. We hope to see her back competing soon.

NCAA Div. III golfer Jack Whelan ready for jump

The mental part of golf has always been a major part of Jack Whelan’s game. Sure, the Topsfield, Mass. native has always had superior hand-eye coordination, terrific action in his golf swing and developed a stellar short game. But it’s the mental part that has kept him on track. For Whelan, who excelled while at the Pingree School and is now among the top players in NCAA Division III golf, the mind has been what has made him into an elite player -- and it will be what takes him even farther. “It’s so important,” he said. “It’s so important to be able to have the right thoughts with each swing on the course.” Whelan is wrapping up his junior year at St. Lawrence University. This season alone, he has two individual victories and a slew of Top 10s. His 73.53 scoring average is good enough for 18th best in the nation. He has solid performances against the national fields at the Terra Cotta Invitational and prestigious Northeast Amateur and he won the 2012 Ouimet Memorial with a wire-to-wire

victory after holding off a late surge from Colin Brennan. The success of 2012, however, didn’t translate to his 2013 season. “Two years ago, I had a really good summer and put a lot of pressure on myself to live up to expectations,” he said. “I played well but was putting too much pressure on myself in tournaments I thought I needed to win.” Whelan competed but felt let down after the 2013 campaign. After winning the Hamilton College Fall Invitational, the team’s last event of the fall portion of the split college golf season, he put the clubs away and took a break. He forgot about his clubs, his game, his swing. He took some time to relax and to focus on school work. And when he got back to the basics, everything came together. Not only did his swing improve but so did his feel and -- most importantly -- his mind. The change and improvement was im-

mediate as he won the Palomountain Invitational just last week. “I probably took close to two months off,” Whelan said. “I got a revamped energy for the team and for the game.” Perhaps most important to his continuous improvement, Whelan also started working with a sports psychologist in the offseason. “I just needed to get my head refreshed and start thinking more positively on the course,” he said.

He hopes to follow in the footsteps of other players that worked on their games and grew into elite players while living up north where the weather prevents year-round practice capabilities and breads a different type of golfer.

He’s looking forward to a busy summer schedule. Once school lets out, he’ll look forward to qualifiers for the U.S. Open, Massachusetts Amateur and U.S. Amateur. He’s also planning to play the New England Amateur, Hornblower Memorial and is aiming for a second Ouimet Memorial title in July. He’s also hoping to be invited to the Northeast Amateur for a second straight year and recently reached out to the Monroe Invitational in Pittsford, N.Y. for acceptance.

“Growing up and playing in the northeast definitely puts a chip on your shoulder,” Whelan said. “There’s always talk about the kids down

For Whelan, all of the mental and physical training, range practice sessions and time spent working on his short game are part of a grander goal. He wants to play professional golf and do so at a high level.

The R&A and USGA Are Finally

Getting Up to Speed With Rangefinders

The ruling bodies of golf tend to be mired in tradition, and are notoriously slow in adapting to developments in the game. However, the R&A and USGA recently took another step in embracing the use of rangefinders in amateur competition. The move reflects the reality that such devices have become ingrained in the game, and may in fact speed up play. Rule 14-3 has long prohibited the use of any “artificial device” or “unusual equipment” for the purpose of gauging or measuring distance or conditions that might affect play. However, in 2006 the rule was amended to allow a rules committee to adopt a local rule allowing players to use devices that measure distance only, but not other factors such as wind speed or the contours of the ground. (See Appendix I,B,9 for a model local rule.) As a result, rangefinders are permissible in most recreational golf, but not in professional golf. While many state golf organizations, including the MGA, have for years adopted the local rule permitting rangefinders in their competitions, the R&A and USGA took a traditionalist stance and did not allow the use of such devices at events such as the British Amateur, U.S. Amateur, and

the many other competitions they conduct. However, in January the R&A announced that it would permit the use of rangefinders in its amateur competitions, including the British Amateur, in 2014. Such devices will not be permitted at the British Open. It did not take long for the USGA to follow suit. In February, the USGA announced that rangefinders will be permitted at all USGA amateur events, but not at the U.S. Open, U.S. Women’s Open, or U.S. Senior Open. USGA president Thomas J. O’Toole remarked that “we’ve seen progressive developments in technologies available to golfers who seek to improve their playing performance and enjoyment. It is in this spirit that we are allowing the use of distance measuring devices in our amateur competitions.” The move is also consistent with the USGA’s campaign to speed up play. So the game of golf is finally coming into the 21st century technologically. Perhaps one day the PGA Tour will permit the use of rangefinders. Who knows? Had Tiger Woods had a Bushnell at Augusta last year, his shot might not have hit the flagstick on the 15th hole and careened into the water hazard. Two yards can make a difference.

For over 14 years my passion has been to get the concept of the Golf Body out to the golfing public. It’s great that so many players are adding a fitness component to their game. What I’m seeing, though, is that a lot of these workouts aren’t all that focused on improving the way people play. Whether I’m working on Tour with Keegan Bradley or at our Performance Center in Jupiter, FL with players at every level, it’s important to bring precision and purpose into your fitness program that’s exclusively dedicated to golf. Think about what your body must do to swing a golf club correctly — and to be able to continue to swing it correctly for your entire round. The larger muscles of the chest and shoulders have to be strong enough to control your 50 mph takeaway and slingshot it back into a 100 mph downswing — while not being so tight that they limit the depth of either your backswing or follow-through. A typical chest routine at the gym would have you doing a lot of bench presses, which can tighten the muscles and prevent your backswing and follow-through you like. from being as deep as you’d The hips have to be stable enough to hold you in place during your address and takeaway, but strong, fast, and powerful enough to be able to drive through the ball at impact. There are very few traditional gym exercises that focus on hip stability, strength, or explosion. The small muscles that make up the rotator cuff in your shoulder have to be strong and capable of a wide range of motion to make sure that your swing is technically correct. I tested the Swing Plane Perfector at a range near my home and right away was impressed with the aids ability to slide under the golf mat I was using. The Game Improvement Trifecta for Golfers

Not many people know this, but I actually went to college for economics and finance. I thought I was going to work on Wall Street, but there was a problem: I hated it. I’d always been a workout guy, so I took some classes in fitness and nutrition, and those books I actually read. So I started a continuing education program in fitness and got certified in 1991. Working at a gym in New Jersey, I began training athletes. But there aren’t many professionals living in the Northeast, so most of my clients were high school and college kids. Working with them was great, but they’re in school all day, which left me a lot of free time. So I started training the country-club sports, golf and tennis, including some golfers from Plainfield Country Club. One of them introduced me to Scott Paris, the pro there: He came to me and was so impressed that

he sent over some of his members. Furthermore, Scott trained with a golf pro in Florida named Simon Holmes, who was one of David Leadbetter’s teachers. One winter in the late 1990s, Scott was in Orlando with Simon. Another of Simon’s pupils also was there, Robert Karlsson from the European Tour. One rainy day when they couldn’t play, Scott said he was going to the gym and Robert went with him. The next thing I know, Scott and Robert are on the phone and I’m flying down to Orlando the next day to train Robert. That was my introduction to the Tour and here I am, 15 years later, working with Jason Day, Luke Donald, and other great golfers. And I’m the Director of Performance at Golf & Body NYC, which is the only private club in Manhattan dedicated to getting the best out of your body and your golf game. It’s the epitome of what I’m trying to do with golfers. All because I disliked Wall Street.

Golfers such as Gary Player and the late Frank Stranahan were pioneers in golf fitness. Then there was a long lag in training until recently. Why? That’s easy: Tiger Woods. When Tiger came along and won majors by 15 strokes, the other golfers said, “Ohmygod, we can’t compete with this guy.” Of course, health and wellness are more popular now than 25 or 35 years ago, but when it comes to golf, Tiger was the motivation.

What’s the most misunderstood idea average golfers have about golf fitness? That it’s all about stretching.

Not all golfers have the time or money to hire a fitness coach. What can golfers do that don’t cost much and take up too much time to get healthier? Anything you do fitness-wise that helps you get stronger and more flexible will help. Take a class at a local gym or YMCA. Do anything you can, and as you physically improve, your golf will benefit.

There’s been plenty of attention given to the physique of Tiger Woods. Is his enhanced muscle tone a hindrance to his playing the game? I’m asked all the time about Tiger and what I say is I have no first-hand knowledge of what he’s doing. It would be wrong for me to answer any questions about him, good or bad. You’d have to ask him and his people. That being said, I believe that muscle tone does not affect mobility, hence golf performance. If you look at male gymnasts, you will see huge muscles and unbelievable flexibility at the exact same time.

What’s more important - overall flexibility or muscle tone? Muscle tone. I’d rather have a short, compact, explosive swing that I can control than a long, loose swing that is out of control.

What role do nutrition and proper eating play in golf? If you’re significantly overweight and out of shape, and you’re walking four to seven miles a round, it plays a role. Even riding the course and playing golf is fatiguing, both mentally and physically. It’ll wear you down. You might not feel it on the first few holes, but you will. You should increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, and especially water, not just on the course but in your life.

Your efforts are about building a better body to handle the rigors of the full swing. What do you do regarding the often forgotten areas of short game expertise and putting? You’re right, my focus is the full swing, generating speed and power and protection against injury. But if you work on those things, you’ll also be creating more stability in your lower body, and that will mean more control in putting and the short game. Honestly, any fitness and wellness improvement aimed at the long game will give at least indirect benefit to the short game.

What type of accreditation or certification should golfers look for when searching for help with their body and golf? For golf-specific training, look for TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certification. But you’ll get help from anyone certified by the big three of general sports training: National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). They deal with all sports, so tell them that you are there to help your golf game.

How much advantage would someone get simply by walking more and riding less? That depends on what shape that person is in now. If he or she is in great shape, walking won’t do much; it won’t hurt, but it’s not going to help a lot. But if that person is out of shape, walking will be incredibly helpful.

What’s the biggest misconception you hear from your students and how do you deal with it? That there is some type of ‘ideal’ swing. There isn’t, there is no one right way. You want the swing that fits your b o d y . And that’s what I train them for.

After an absence of many months the sight of these old friends added to the anticipation of being able to again tee it up is a rite of spring. However, though they may have been the instruments that helped us in many a match it’s only natural to take a hard look at them, i.e.,

evaluate them for the New Year. Let’s see, “Is it time for a new driver?” Or, “Has that old putter seen better days?” Of course the same is true for bags and push carts so New England Golf has compiled information about some of the models we like to help you if replacements are needed.

Adams Golf

Adams hybrid clubs are top selling and the Hybrid Stand Bag (HY1405-$170) is a great lightweight choice to carry them and the rest of your clubs. It has eight pockets including four in a tier for easy access even if the bag is mounted on a golf cart. The apparel pocket has air vents and the top has five dividers.

Alphard Golf

Alphard may be an unfamiliar name to many but it won’t be for long. Their Agile Stand Bag ($150) comes with either 11- or 14-way full length dividers and there’s eight pockets to carry your “stuff.” The cover, held on by buttons and zippers, is replaceable so you can give a fresh look to your bag any time you want. Their Duo Cart Evolution ($380), new for 2014, is a fourwheel push cart and bag in one. Set up is easy and the main latch is a new and improved design. Even though it’s an integrated bag and cart it folds compactly for your car trunk and the hydraulically assisted rear wheel system means unfolding and folding is a snap.

Bag Boy

The ulta-compact C3 ($200) model push cart attracted our attention since it folds down to 21½ inches by 13 inches by 18 inches so it won’t hog trunk space. Especially nice is the upper bracket which fits both stand and cart bags and locks a stand bag securely in place. The frame is nice and wide so the C3 is really stable over uneven terrain.

Cleveland Golf

The CG Lightweight Stand Bag ($170) is a favorite of many golfers with its 6-way 8 ½ inch top and full length dividers. At less than five pounds, six convenient pockets and with a dual strap built for comfort this one is a good choice.

Clicgear

The company known for push carts has a new one the four wheeled Model 8 priced at $269. Both front wheels have brakes and alignment adjustments making a chinch to travel in a straight line. All four wheels fold up for storage and but when open they have a nice wide track to provide stability on slopes. Clicgear also has a new cart bag the B3 ($200) made to fit any push cart but the design especially works well with Clicgear carts. We liked that the pockets (there are 13 of them) and all have full length zippers since there nothing more irksome than having a nice sized pocket but having to struggle with the opening to add or remove items.

Datrek

The Carry Lite Stand Bag is only 4.7 pounds and only $100 but still has some very nice features. The top is 8-way mesh with full length dividers and the five pockets include both a large one for apparel and a lined one for valuables plus there’s an insulated beverage sleeve. Datrek also has two new cart bags, the Lite Rider and CB-Lite, and as you can tell by the names both are lightweight…less than five pounds. Each has a 14-way top, full length dividers and bottoms designed for stability.

Mizuno Golf

The Aerolite [X] stand bag ($160) has Mizuno’s limited run GEN5 collection of graphics to attract younger, fashion aggressive players looking to carry a bag that will stand out in the crowd. It has another Mizuno exclusive as well, the Kabuki 7-way organizer top cuff that does a neat job separating clubs using the weight of the clubs. The Aerolite SPR II ($200) is also a stand bag but somewhat larger having a 9 ½ inch top with 14 dividers—3 being full length. The bag’s base is cart-friendly and this one also makes use of the Kabuki club organizer.

Nike Golf

The Hybrid Performance Carry Bag ($199) with aluminum stand has a 9 ½ inch 14-way top. The dual carry strap is Nike’s EquaFlex Max Air design that distributes the bag’s weight making it comfortable to carry a full 18.

OGIO International

If you have been waiting for a bag made of black “stealth-like” materials with a modern look the Gotham stand bag ($240) and cart bag ($270) from OGIO are just what you want. Each has a 4-point dual strap and pockets to organize you golf life plus the company’s quality construction. Also from OGIO is a waterproof line of bags, Aquatech ($260), and we liked the features of the carry model. The 10 inch six divider top keeps clubs in place but if you are playing in the rain the thing you will most appreciate is all the pockets are thermo welded to be completely waterproof, even the cell phone sleeve.

TaylorMade Golf

The Quiver Carry Bag at 2.2 pounds may be lighter than your first cell phone and this modern version of the classic Sunday bag is one we really think is worth a look. At $90 the price is attractive and though it doesn’t have a stand it does have a dual strap, three pockets and a two-way top. TMaG’s Purelite ($180) stand bag is larger and somewhat heavier at 5 ½ pounds than the Quiver but also has a five-way top and seven pockets. The 4-point shoulder strap is very comfortable we are sold on the anti-split leg restraint so when you put your bag down it doesn’t look like a giraffe at a waterhole.

Sun Mountain

Completely redesigned for 2014, the Three 5 stand bag ($190) uses Sun Mountain proprietary Auto-Fit Dual Strap System that’s easy to get on and off, easy to adjust and works well as a single strap for short carries. Weighing under four pounds, it has six pockets, including a full-length clothing pocket, beverage pouch and a velour-lined valuables pocket. Their newest lightweight golf stand bag is the Front 9 ($170) has a lot going for it even though it weighs just 3.8 pounds including being large enough for a full set of clubs and other necessaries like rain suit and extra balls. The top is 8 ½ inches and there are three full length dividers. Sun Mountain also makes push carts of course and their Speed Cart V1 Sport ($200) combines great features from previous models with a new brake design and a flawlessly working folding mechanism. Bag brackets are adjustable so they hold without straps and the V1 Sport has several standard features that often are extras on other push carts such as an umbrella mount and accessory tray with a holder for the scorecard. The Micro-Cart Sport offers the advantages of the standard MicroCart in fresh new color offerings. One key feature is Micro-Cart’s four-wheel design which has a compact folded foot print and is light weight, making the cart easy to get in and out of your vehicle. The cart’s low center of gravity results in superior stability on the course.

The neXus stand bag ($200) has a neat idea, the frame is on the outside rather than the inside which means more strength plus more space in the bag. The five-way top with two full-length dividers combined with the eight pockets makes for a very functional bag to carry and one that works well on a cart too. The Feather SL ($130) is only 4 ½ pounds but with a 9 inch top and five pockets it fills the needs of most players who like to walk. There beverage pocket is handily placed and four of the dividers are full-length.

AUGUSTA, Ga. – As the 2014 Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals commence today at Augusta National Golf Club, the Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association (USGA) and The PGA of America have announced that local qualifying registration is now open on the event’s website, www. DriveChipandPutt.com, for young golfers hoping to earn an invitation to next year’s National Finals. This youth golf development initiative will again include boys and girls ages 7-15 who will compete in separate divisions in four age categories. In only its second year, the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship will nearly triple the number of local

Over the years that New England Golf Monthly has been in existence Tom Gorman and I have locked horns on all kinds of golf-related topics. Finally we have reached the most integral part of the game – THE BALL! When I began playing golf some 40 years ago the first ball I used was a Kro Flite. Then I graduated to the Dunlap Blue Max, the Lee Trevino Faultless and then the revolutionary Royal that replaced the traditional dimpled ball with a hexagon pattern. Didn’t last long. Today the ball I have for regular play is Bridgestone, not because I think it’s the best ball out there, but because I got a great deal on them and I am not good enough to really care which ball I put on a tee (although there are a few balls that I’d throw in the woods if I found them because they are rocks). Whenever I tee it up seriously, when I really have something to play for and I go into grind mode, the ball I pull out of my bag is the most familiar name of all; Titleist. The Acushnet Golf Company, based just north of New Bedford, MA, is the largest manufacturer of golfing equipment in the world and has been the leader forever. Titleist is unrivaled as the ball of choice among professional and top amateur players. There are so many different brands now and because of endorsement contracts touring pros can make a fortune just by playing a certain ball. But here is how you know which ball is the

best. Look at the amateur championships where the players choose the ball they feel gives them the best shot at winning, not the ball that somebody pays them the most money to play. That ball is invariably the Titleist Pro V1. With all the money that’s out there pros still choose the Pro V1 over any other brand because it’s simply the best ball. The other top brands try to come as close to Titleist as they can. Titleist doesn’t try to copy anybody else’s design. It always leads and the others scramble to keep up. Back before companies began paying touring pros a kings ransom to play their ball, Titleist was almost exclusively the ball of choice. For years the company did not pay the pros to use their balls while others did. And even then the vast majority chose Titleist over any other brand. They still do. Titleist makes several brands of ball, trying to appeal to a wide consumer base. The most basic of the company’s arsenal is the Pinnacle which is fine for a high handicapper who only cares about how far they can hit it, but is positively awful in terms of feel and spin. The Titleist SoLo is another ball that I don’t care for, but as far as reasonably priced balls go, I don’t think there is a better one out there than the Titleist NXT series, which combines length with feel. The ultimate ball is the original Pro V1, but while it is the Cadillac of balls, it also comes with a corresponding price, one that most average hackers, me included, are not willing to pay. Like so many others of my ilk, however, when we find one on the course, it’s like finding a crown jewel. I have never played golf with anyone who has ever offered a Pro V1 to anyone else because they don’t play it. To my mind that tells you just which brand is number one. Mr. Geary once again is reaching here, as far as locking horns, I am not sure that we have ever been that close on any point to do so. Just as well here is story behind the story when it comes to the #1 Ball in golf. Golf balls are a lot like a piece of steak, one is approved by the USDA, the other by the USGA, but in the end, either one can end up leaving a bad taste in your mouth. The golf ball industry is a 1.2 billion dollar industry worldwide. And yes Titleist holds by far the largest market share of that business worldwide. What made the new ProV1 and ProV1x become the dominant golf ball in the world today was a bit of a corporate hoodwinks letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say. Michael Sullivan now with Titleist was presently with Top Flite who was purchased out of bankruptcy in 2003 by Callaway. With that transaction Callaway became owners of patents registered by Sullivan that were used later by Titleist to manufacture the ProV series of golf balls.

So lets go back to the question what is the very best ball in golf? It seems as though the best ball in golf is at best a mongrel of two or three leading brands. There are a number of great golf balls out there today, many of which can provide almost the same features and playability of the Titleist product lines. Very few of them have the marketing dollars to have over 250 players on the tours wearing their hat or glove. Not to mention free golf balls for numerous colleges, junior programs and amateur events worldwide. Titleist is for sure the juggernaut ball in golf as is Gillette the number one razor in the world. Having said that I feel both are not noticeably different than the competition. I personally shave with Harryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Razors which last longer and cost less and pretty much have played a dozen different brands of golf balls that all performed well. Is all the hype of the ProV1 or ProV1x all it is made up to be, I think not! Last year in a charity tournament in Myrtle Beach 200 players were given a test and allowed to hit 6 different golf balls that had their manufactures names covered and were ask to rate the balls 1-6. Here are the results in order of preference.

The end result has been billions of dollars in golf ball sales over the last 14 years and given Titleist the upper hand in as big way in the golf ball industry. At the same time Bridgestone sued Titleist for patent infringements used on the ProV1 line among other golf balls in their

On every ball there would be a single blank line for your name. Now it would be simple to identify every golf ball in competition and it would eliminate all these cheaters who will hit any ball anywhere and call it their own.
