From the Editor Seasons Greetings It’s a time of year for celebrations and holidays and a great time to spend with friends and family. I clearly remember talking about that putt by Keegan Bradley at the PGA Championship that started his comeback on the road to his first major at Thanksgiving last year; it feels like yesterday. Golf is a celebration of life and each time we play there always seems to be something to remember that has lasting meaning. Golf is truly a game made of moments and memories. While on the subject of Keegan Bradley I have to say congratulations on another great season on the PGA Tour. With a win at the World Golf Championship Bridgestone and making 21 of 25 cuts this year Keegan finished the year ranked 14th in the world. This season he has earned almost 4 million dollars adding to his rookie season last year he has earned over 7.5 million. Once again our Team New England Player of the Year is Keegan Bradley. It has been decades since any player from New England has had this kind of impact on the tour. This month’s issue is our popular Holiday Gift Guide and Annual Golf Travel issue. Inside you will find plenty of great ideas for the giving season for your golfer. You will also find a very comprehensive look at some great golf destinations for planning your next golf trip. There is nothing like a road trip with a few friends to make the winter just a bit shorter. The crown jewel of winter golf is Scottsdale, Arizona with over 250 courses. Celebrity Golfer: Brian Silva by Leigh MacKay
Brian Silva, Golf World’s 1999 “Architect of the Year,” agreed to the interview but told me, “I don’t think that I am a ‘celebrity’ golfer.”
OK, we’ll just celebrate, instead, both his original designs and course restorations - 125 and counting - that have provided countless hours of enjoyment to countless New Englanders (and others far beyond our realm) for 29 years. Raised in Framingham, MA, and a graduate of Framingham South HS, Silva learned about shaping golf courses from his father, who worked in their construction for prominent architects, among them Geoffrey Cornish, a giant among NE designers. At Cornish’s suggestion, Silva first got a job during high school as a greenkeeper at Woodland CC in Newton, MA, and then went to UMass Amherst, where Cornish was a turf consultant, and earned three degrees - an Associate’s in Turf Management from the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, a Bachelor’s in Landscape Architecture, and a Master’s in Plant and Soil Sciences. After three years of teaching at Lake City Community College, FL, and a short stint as an agronomist for the USGA, Cornish, in 1983, suggested Silva join his firm as an architect, and much of the rest of that relationship has become NE golf history. From Cornish, who passed away in February at 97, Silva had a direct link to the “Golden Age” of American course design (1911-1937) and learned the thought processes of classic architects like C.B. Macdonald, Alister Mackenzie, Seth Raynor, Donald Ross and A.W. Tillinghast to name a few. He learned that the game’s “unique allure,” as he calls it, comes from playing upon a “field with no rigid dimensions” and that these fields are characterized by
“ample fairways, strategic and random bunkers nestled into their surroundings, and the spirited use of angles in design.” He learned that greens were situated so that second shots, pitches, and chips should be played more “on the ground” (instead of flying the ball to the pin) to allow the contour to run the ball toward the hole. Thus, Silva’s education has made him the leader of the “retro design” movement, and he has been called the architect who takes his golfers “back to the future.” His courses, where each hole fits naturally into the landscape, demand shotmaking strategy from the tee and fairway and around the green. Some of his more critically acclaimed courses include Black Creek (TN), Black Rock (MA), Cape Cod National, Old Marsh (ME), Red Tail, (MA), Renaissance (MA), and Waverly Oaks (MA). His renovations and restorations of vintage designs include Augusta CC (Ross), Baltimore CC (Tillinghast), Brookside CC (Ross), CC of Charleston (Raynor), Old Elm (Ross), St. Louis CC (Macdonald), and Seminole (Ross). NEGM: How much golf do you get to play? Where? BS: I don’t get to play much in summer but do play Black Rock in Hingham and some other places I have been fortunate enough to work at. In the winter I play frequently at Long Point and Oakmarsh at Amelia Island Plantation. I didn’t play enough to have a real handicap until four winters ago and took my first lesson this past spring. My current index is 10. NEGM: Who would be in your Dream Foursome? BS: Three of the great folks I have worked with: George McGoldrick of Black Rock, Sho Tobari of Abiko in Japan, and Bill Sedgewick at St Louis CC. NEGM: How important has UMass been to your career? BS: All I ever wanted to do was go to the Stockbridge School of Agriculture at UMass. It has meant everything to me and my career. Being the recipient of the Bateman Honorary Scholar Award was more than I could ever imagine. NEGM: What is Geoffrey Cornish’s legacy to New England golfers? BS: More people in New England have been able to play the game because of one person - Mr. Cornish, the ultimate gentleman, devoid of ego in an egomaniacal business. He only wanted to do all he could to help the game, its players, and its course owners. NEGM: What do you most admire about the
classic designers? BS: Those guys were able to build courses that kept the accomplished golfers mentally engaged while still allowing the average and less-than-average golfer to enjoy their rounds, too. Presenting alternatives in playing a hole and allowing the golfer to put the ball on the ground were their great hallmarks. And all elements were set into their sites so comfortably. NEGM: Why do you enjoy renovating these classic courses? BS: It is a great educational process. When I study the old plans and vintage photographs, I learn how the great ones routed and set up their courses. NEGM: What are a few of your current projects? BS: Renovations of the Dunes Course, Monterey Peninsula Club; Hampden CC, MA; Sunnehanna CC, PA,; Cold Spring CC, NY. Re-opening Abiko Golf Club, Japan, after its renovation and finishing the last nine of 36 greens at The Quechee Club, VT. NEGM: What final words do you have for golfers of all abilities on how to play the courses you design and renovate? BS: Stand on the tee and try to “read” the course - well designed courses allow you to do this. If you have some goal in mind as you stand on the tee - if you think one shot ahead, as Hogan said - you will make your road easier.

I Kissed a Leprechaun…
Prior to traveling to Ireland the only leprechaun I have ever encountered was the one on the front of my Lucky Charms cereal box. The definition describes them as: “a type of fairy in Irish folklore, usually taking the form of an old man, clad in a red or green coat, who enjoys partaking in mischief. The Leprechauns spend all their time busily making shoes, and store away all their coins in a hidden pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. If ever captured by a human, the Leprechaun has the magical power to grant three wishes in exchange for their release.” My first thought is this guy sounds like my kind of guy. What kind of shoes is he making anyway, Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin? What I am about to tell you is a true story, similar to the one your friend told you who said he shot par at Royal County Down. While in Ireland at the famous Lough Erne golf resort I was invited to the
“bar in the woods”. When asked if I would like to go I figured it was a nice little log cabin somewhere off of the ninth hole in the woods. Instead we got in the car and followed a few neon signs that were in the shape of a pizza with no writing on them until we came upon a house in the woods. Inside was the most magical bar filled with antiques, golf memorabilia and photos of those visitors that had come before me including Nick Faldo. Next thing I know I was handed a small glass of clear liquid from an unmarked bottle, never a good sign. It was Poitín, a traditional Irish beverage around 90 proof. Poitín was traditionally distilled in a small pot from malted barley grain or potatoes. It is one of the strongest alcoholic beverages in the world, and for centuries was illegal in Ireland. However to say “the alcohol made me do it” and to blame kissing a leprechaun on a wee bit of alcohol is the oldest trick in the book. No, that part was premeditated as I

was determined to get my three wishes. He quickly acquiesced and requested my three wishes: 1. Live and play like royalty, 2. Witness the creation of the nectar of Ireland 3. Golf the fairest courses of them all The next day I was off to Mount Falcon in County Mayo on the western side of Ireland, a Manor house built on a 2,200 acre estate on the west bank of the River Moy in 1876. The Maloney Family purchased and restored this house to its former glory and throughout the property are constant reminders of the exquisite history including housing plans, receipts for purchases including fireplaces and furnishings that are still present in the house. Here I was schooled in fly fishing or angling. Mount Falcon owns two miles of the River Moy where you can find some of the finest salmon fishing in the world with deep and shallow pools making it ideal for fly, bait and spinning. I dined in the cozy bar and sipped fine malbec wine and slept in the same bed Tiger Woods did when he visited. Golf luminaries that have also enjoyed Mt. Falcon include Nick Faldo, Mark O’Meara and John Cooke. My next stop was to Ashford Castle founded in 1228 and purchased in 1852 by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, the family of brewers that make the world famous Guinness beer. This 350 acre estate includes its own 9 hole golf course. The 83 room castle is all you expect in opulence and grandeur. Here I was able to practice the 4,000 year old sport of falconry. The sensation of having a majestic hawk with amazing speed and agility fly through the forest and land on your arm is breathtaking. The Guinness Store-
house was where I was to learn how the nectar, so well known to Ireland, is made and the incredible history of the Guinness family and the brand. At the Guinness factory in Dublin, Ireland you have the opportunity to experience an interactive beer museum that includes learning to correctly pour your own Guinness, a 360 panoramic glass bar on the top floor and an exclusive private beer tasting room for 14. Now it was time to play golf on some of the fairest courses in the land. Ardglass Golf Club in County Down has the most amazing views. It is also very challenging as the course has numerous holes along steep ocean cliffs. The golf course at Royal County Down is known as one of the best in Ireland and while I was unable to play the day I was there I had the distinct pleasure of having tea with some members. The ladies have their own clubhouse adjacent to the main clubhouse and are a very impressive group. Lough Erne is a serine picturesque course with elevations and holes running alongside the more tranquil loughs in the area of County Fermanagh. This Nick Faldo designed course challenges and delights golfers of all levels. Finally, Trandragee Golf Club in County Armagh is a charming course with elevated tee boxes and rolling hills. The views are spectacular and the area is rich in history including the course being built in 1911 by the Duke of Manchester. The Irish hospitality of the members’ at all four courses was the best I have ever experienced and what we all hope for on any golf trip. “Leprechauns, castles, good luck and laughter. Lullabies, dreams and love ever after. Poems and songs with pipes and drums. A thousand welcomes when anyone comes...that’s the Irish for you!”

Year of the iron - Looking forward to next season

The new season may well be the “year of the iron” because so far that’s what has caught our attention. That not to say their isn’t anything new in drivers or putters just that our interest was drawn to some innovative irons by well known companies plus a refined model of the popular laser range finder. First is the new iron line from TaylorMade Golf, RocketBladez, named with a tip of the cap I’m sure to RocketBallz, which of course were last season’s runaway success in metalwoods. TMaG says RocketBladez are a game-changer in iron design producing clubs that hit the ball further, give better control and more feel. The major innovation TaylorMade came up with a way to make an iron with a 2 mm polyurethane-filled slot behind the clubface similar to the slot found in the RocketBallz fairways. At impact, in the 3- through 7-irons, this slot or ‘Speed Pocket’ allows the clubface to flex, providing a trampoline effect to the ball, a high launch plus more distance. RocketBladez will be available in Tour and regular models and both are made by casting in order to be able to include the slot. They also feature a redistributed weight placement, milled grooves and face texture plus a hosel notch to make it easier to bend them to player spec
ifications. RocketBladez carry a SRP of $799 (steel shafts) and $899 (graphite) and the Tour model is $899 with steel shafts. Mizuno Golf has introduced the JPX-825 irons which they say give, “exceptional ball speed and explosive distance.” Using their Max Cor Technology the new irons have a very thin face and thanks to redistribution of the clubhead weight their engineer’s have created the largest sweet spot of any Mizuno iron. Aimed at the mid-range of handicaps, from 10 to 28, the JPX-825s are joined by the JPX-825 Pro line for those with handicaps down to 6. This version is made with Mizuno’s Grain Flow forging process to produce a ”player’s” game improvement iron with more forgiveness and feel The 4-7 irons have a CNC milled pocket cavity that allows more weight to be shifted towards the heel and toe while the 8-GW have more thickness behind the impact area for a more penetrating ball flight. The JPX-825s are $699 (steel shafts) and $899 (graphite) while the JPX-825 Pros are $899 (steel) and $1,099 (graphite).

Particularly interesting are the Adams Golf Idea Tech V4 hybrids and irons for next year refining their Velocity Slot Technology and adding to the hybrids what they call Cut-Thru design to produce clubs having very high Characteristic Times, a measure of club face responsiveness. “With refined Velocity Slots, we were able to produce a CT around 240, which is what golfers will find in today’s drivers,” said Justin Girard, Senior Design Engineer. “This is something the industry hasn’t seen in a standard stainless steel hybrid. The increased CT is going to deliver a higher launch angle and higher ball speeds. Golfers will quickly notice that these hybrids are as hot as their driver.” Hybrids with Adams’ well known Velocity Slots in the crown and sole also have a channel cut through the head from the top slot to the bottom. This allows for much more face deflection which translates into better performance. The Tech V4s are offered in either a blended iron-hybrid set with 3H-5H and 6-PW forged irons or an all-hybrid set. MSRP is $899.99 (steel) and $1099.99 (graphite) and $249.99 for the Hybrids. Finally, admitedly the Bushnell Tour Z6 range finder is not a brand new product but it still is very impressive and should make anyones short list of possible laser
units to purchase for next year. It’s compact, easily held and used in one hand but it doesn’t give anything up in the way of technology features. Especially nice is the 6x magnification and combined with Bushnells PinSeeker Technology the user is able to get yardage to a flag almost instanteously. The display is very clear and combined with accuracy of ½-yard there shouldn’t be any excuse for hitting a wayward shot due to not having the proper distance. The Tour Z6 has a suggested retail of $399 but it is available for somewhat less in some online stores.

Ross’ Rulings A Muni Golfer’s Christmas List For The USGA by Jack Ross It’s Christmas Eve, and Thomas “Slice” Duffer sits by the fireplace in his favorite chair, sipping egg nog and longing for the spring golf season. He scrawls a final line on a note pad, inserts the sheet of paper into an envelope, and places it on the fireplace mantel next to the milk and cookies his young daughter has left for Santa. “What’s that?” asks his wife Betsy. “It’s my Christmas wish list,” replies Slice. “Aren’t you a bit old for making lists for Santa?” asks Betsy with
a smile. “It’s not for Santa,” replies Slice. “It’s for the USGA.” “Don’t you have enough USGA golf shirts and hats?” frowns Betsy. “I’m not asking for merchandise,” explains Slice. “This is my Golf Rules Changes Wish List. My golf buddies and I at the muni course have long felt that some rules changes could make the game easier, more enjoyable, and faster, which is what the USGA says it wants to do. So I’m sending them a list.” “I’d like to see this,” says Betsy, opening the envelope.
Golf Rules Changes Wish List 1. Abolish the stroke-and-distance rule for lost balls and balls hit out of bounds. Drop ball approximately where it crossed out of bounds line or entered woods with 1-stroke penalty. (This change simply conforms to common practice and will speed play. You would risk bodily injury returning to the tee on a muni course, and most muni golfers think a “provisional ball” is an extra ball carried in your pocket to use as a mulligan.) 2. Allow preferred lies in fairways. (On the rare occasion my tee shot finds the fairway, I deserve a decent lie, and shouldn’t have to hit out of divots or off bare lies. Our courses don’t look like Pebble Beach or The Country Club.) 3. Permit movement of loose impediments in bunkers. (No one has ever been assessed a penalty for touching a leaf on his backswing on a muni course. Plus, it’s hard enough to play a sand shot without having to deal with pine cones, acorns, twigs, and beer cans abutting your ball.) 4. Modify unplayable ball rule to permit dropping behind bunker with 1-stroke
penalty. (I’d like to see some of the USGA guys try to play an explosion shot out of the rock-hard sand we have to deal with.) 5. Abolish the penalty for ball moving after address. (I’ll suffer the consequences of my bad shots, but at least let me hit the ball.) 6. Do not ban long or belly putters. (Note to USGA executive director Mike Davis: if you played enough muni golf, you’d realize that there is no “traditional concept of the stroke.” Also, don’t you think the horse has left the barn far too long here?) 7. Legalize the Polara golf ball that corrects slices. (This game is hard enough. We’ll be playing them anyway.) 8. Any shot striking beer cart entitles golfer to replay shot and receive a complimentary beer. “So, what do you think?” asks Slice. “I think all of your buddies will be aiming at the beer cart,” replies Betsy. On the Bubble, Driscoll Survives Again
Each year, at the season ending Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic there is a tournament within a tournament that takes place. The event serves as the players’ last chance to get inside the magical number of 125 on the official money list. Typically, everyone entering the week from 120th on down on the list is safe, but this year’s event is made even more important given the 2013 schedule changes, which also include major changes to what we’ve always known as Q-school. Unfortunately two New England players entered the event on the bubble. James Driscoll came in at 120th and Tim Petrovic at 134th on the money list. Driscoll struggled throughout the last stretch of the season, missing six of his last nine cuts, while Petrovic missed more cuts than he made on the season, but thankfully was kept alive by a T2 at the Frys.com Open. This is a position Driscoll knows well. He entered this same event last year exactly at the 125th position, and fared well under the pressure by finishing T12 and earning $95,175, securing his card for 2012 season. This week, both players unfortunately missed the cut. However, the news was better for Driscoll than it was for Petrovic. Despite missing the cut by a single stroke, shooting 72-72 the first two days, Driscoll
only slid two overall spots on the money list to 122 ($687,338 in total earnings) and will retain his playing privileges for 2013. Clearly Driscoll is getting used to living life on the edge of the bubble, after last season entering the tournament on the 125 number, to play well enough to sit comfortably inside the top 100 when all was said and done. This year his fate was in the hands of others, and thankfully he can breathe a sigh of relief. Petrovic shot 76-73 and ended up missing the cut by a mile. The good news for Tim is that he only slid three overall spots on the money list to 137 and is still within the top 150. Players who finished between 126-150 get to go directly to the final stage of Q-school and try to regain their card for 2013. Players in that range also hold conditional status on the PGA Tour for 2013, which allow them to tee it up in a certain number of tournaments. Hopefully Petrovic is able to find a little bit of magic in his game for the final stage of Q-school which takes place in early December, and we can watch both Driscoll and Petrovic teeing it up in Hawaii come January. Putter War Evokes Keegan Bradley’s Inner Sam Snead by Emily Kay
That Keegan Bradley is masterminding the counteroffensive to golf’s governing bodies’ efforts to yank the putter out of his flat belly is really not a shocker. Nor is it astonishing that the 2011 PGA champ has enlisted other top players in his guerrilla movement, since opposing rule changes is almost as cherished a tradition as the game of golf itself. “I’m going to do whatever I have to do to protect myself and the other players on tour,” Bradley, the first of three golfers to win a major using a long putter, said recently. Ernie Els, a member of the Tiger Woods’ ban-thebelly brigade until a big bat helped him resurrect his career (and win the 2012 British Open), threatened a lawsuit to stop the USGA and R&A from enacting an expected edict outlawing the anchoring stroke players use to navigate their lengthy wands. “They’re going to have a couple of legal matters coming their way,” Els warned. The next time golf’s legislators mandate a rules change (especially one related to equipment) that does not cause an uproar among the game’s practitioners will be the first. Remember the sturm and drang surrounding the “U-groove” or “square groove” proscription of 2008? Lawsuits, cheating charges, and excessive handwringing ensued amid endless yak-a-thons concerning .0030 square inches per inch and other mind-numbing statistics - and it wasn’t the first time a grooves issue roiled the sport. The 2008 ruling was a complete 180 from the arbiters’ conclusion some 20 years earlier that “square grooves” did not imperil the integrity of the game.
Back on the green, while Bradley appears to be the ringleader of today’s band of belly brigands, he was hardly the first top professional to buffet boos and brickbats over an unconventional way to roll the rock. Truculent traditionalists were outraged when Sam Snead - who, in his 50s could keep up with anyone on the fairways but struggled mightily with the flat stick rode a croquet-style putting stroke to a T6 finish at the 1966 PGA Championship. The catcalls grew louder when Snead employed the same unsightly stance in a win at the 1967 PGA Seniors’ Championship and a T10 at the Masters that same year. Spurred on by Bobby Jones’ aversion to Snead’s fix for the yips, the governors quickly enacted legislation that, as of Jan. 1, 1968, prohibited players from stroking balls “from a stance astride,” as if aiming at wickets. Sticky verdict, that, as it engendered opposition from star players like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Still, the ban stood (and remains in force today, as Rule 16-1e), requiring Snead to come up with a side-saddle technique that he used with success for years to come. The game’s overseers were fortunate that Bradley, et al, were not around in Slammin’ Sammy’s day. Bryan Morry Enjoys Gridiron and Golf Greatness
There are few people with a more personal stake in the New England Patriots decade-plus run of success than Bryan Morry. From 1997 until 2005, he was a writer, editor, and host for Patriots Football Weekly (PFW), patriots.com, and the PFW television show. This work catapulted Morry to multimedia popularity, and eventually, a regular sports radio gig at The Score AM/FM in Providence. In 2007, Morry returned to Foxboro as Executive Director of The Hall at Patriots Place. He truly has seen all sides of a dynasty, and golf has been along for the ride. “I started playing in the 9th grade in Warwick at Seaview Country Club,” says Morry, a BU grad who grew up in Rhode Island and now lives on Cape Cod. “My friends and I would go in the morning and play 27 or 36 holes. I had one 30-minute lesson about five or six years ago. I learned a lot about weight shift and tempo, but it really is about how often you play.” With his eclectic schedule, Morry’s golf game takes a back seat to fatherhood and career. He relates, “Last year, I hardly played at all. This fall, I might get out there ten times. My son Alex is 13 and plays on his Middle School team. He gets to plays some great courses.” The 41-year-old Morry also has two daughters, Ella, 10, and Samantha, 8. His media career has made for some interesting golf partners. “I played in a lot of Patriots’ charity tournaments when I was with PFW. A lot of NFL players play golf and they are really competitive. If they are not good, they will get good really quickly because they work at it.” Morry, himself, has a competitive history with the game. He explains, “When I was younger, I used to throw my clubs farther than I would hit the ball. At some point, I decided that I would never be really good and I should just enjoy it. Now, I make fun of people who get mad. My goal is to use the same ball for an entire round and break 90.” This positive outlook has led Morry to some great New England courses. “I love Old Barnstable and
Willowbend,” he relates. “The Ocean Course (New Seabury) has five holes right on the water and the back nine is really fun. Newport Country Club beat the crap out of me. My golf bucket list includes Augusta, Pebble Beach, and TPC Norton.” As for personal golf highlights, Morry details a memorable one. “I was playing a charity tournament at Colonial in Wakefield. The 8th hole was a par 5. I really drove it and got a good bounce. I went after the ball and didn’t see it. I figured there was no way I could hit it that far. When I got in the clubhouse, they told me I won the longest drive. I was surrounded by Lyndon Byers and other big, tough hockey players, so it was quite a feat.” For Morry, great moments are the rule as his rise in media coincided with the Patriots’ rise to NFL royalty. He explains, “The first three years I was there, the Patriots’ record got steadily worse, then they won three out of four Super Bowls. Morry is the co-author of “Patriots United-The New England Patriots World Championship Season,” a chronicle of the team’s 2001 season. That year remains a standout. “I remember the team plane ride home after beating Carolina in the final game of the regular season,” says Morry. “We were all on edge monitoring the Jets-Raiders game. The whole plane erupted with applause when we heard that the Jets won giving us a first round bye. I was able to live through the beginnings of the Patriots dynasty. Now, I can talk to people about it at the Hall at Patriot Place.” Morry enjoys interacting with people at a more relaxed venue where fans are not upset about a call or arguing about football. He similarly cherishes his more subdued golf moments. “I enjoy playing by myself, and there is nothing better than going to the range. I work on my grip and my stance. I imagine myself playing a particular course or hole and how I will approach it. Danny Guise - Wake Forest Bound by Bob DiCesare Danny Guise is no Reggie Jackson, but the junior golfer from Greenwich, Connecticut had the kind of fall season where even U.S. Challenge Cup executive director Dave Adamonis Jr. took to calling him “Mr. October” on Facebook. “’Mr. October’ and ‘Guise is nice’ - that was nice recognition,” said the 17-year-old Guise, who recently signed a letter of intent to play golf at Wake Forest next year. When it comes to junior golf in New England, there’s just no disguising Guise’s talent on a golf course in a short period of time, while also playing basketball all four years at Greenwich High. In golf, he became the Conn. Div. 1 Player of the Year as a junior and qualified for both the U.S. Amateur in Colorado and the U.S. Junior Amateur in New Hampshire this summer, as well as the prestigious Northeast Amateur at Wannamoisett CC in Rumford, RI and the Terra Cotta Invitational in Naples. Fla. Then he capped off the golf season with an impressive run in SepDanny Guise tember and October. During Deutsche Bank Championship week, Guise was a member of Team New England which defeated Team USA for the fourth consecutive year in the John D. Mineck DBC Junior Cup, a match play event held simultaneously at Boston Golf Club in Hingham, MA. Guise was also presented with the 7th annual Mineck Award from Deutsche Bank of Americas CEO Seth Waugh, which goes to an outstanding junior golfer who best exemplifies Boston GC co-founder Mineck’s ideals and qualities. At the U.S. Challenge Cup Bethpage (N.Y.) Invitational over Columbus Day weekend, Guise opened with a 73 and then tied a U.S. Challenge Cup record
by shooting a 6-under 64 to finish first. Two weeks later in a Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) event at Newport National GC, Guise fired an 11-under-par 133 (66-67) to set a new scoring record and win by a whopping 10 strokes. “I had never gotten to double-digits under-par before,” said Guise. “Plus, when you combine the final round at Bethpage with those two rounds, I was 17-under-par for three straight rounds. That’s a personal best. It was a good feeling. I expect to play well, but I definitely did not expect this. What’s News MGA Member Club Granite Links Golf Club Honored By the American Society of Golf Course Architects Design Excellence Recognition
Norton, MA - One MGA Member Club - Granite Links Golf Club - was recently honored by the inaugural American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA) Design Excellence Recognition Program. Projects from six courses across the United States were cited for their work with ASGCA members in addressing unique design challenges. The project at Granite Links Golf Club involved
taking 10 million cubic yards from the famous “Big Dig” site and using the material to close two landfills and build 27-holes of golf with incredible views of the Boston skyline, harbor and Blue Hills. It also reduced the excavation disposal budget for the Boston Central Artery project by $100 million. Only six courses from across the country were recognized.

What’s News Pam Kuong Massachusetts Women’s Golf Association Player of the Year The Women’s Golf Association of Massachusetts honors Pamela Kuong as the 2012 Anne Marie Tobin Player of the Year. Pam began her season by capturing the Edith Noblit Baker at Woods Hole Golf Club in an exciting one hole play-off over Tracy Martin. Pam went on to capture the New England Senior Amateur and was third at the New England Amateur at Natanis Golf Course in Maine. Additionally, she placed second in the WGAM’s Keyes Cup at Marshfield Country Club. However, Pam is most proud of her accomplishments at the national level. She was the medalist at both the local USGA Mid-Amateur and USGA Senior Amateur Qualifiers. Pam qualified for match play in both of these events. All of this was accomplished this in only her sixth year of competitive golf. Pam is quick to give thanks to the people who have contributed to her success in golf, especially to the WGAM who provides the players with the opportunity to compete in such great tournaments. She also credits
her colleague at Bank of America and caddie, Peter McCarthy, her golf coach, Skip Guss, and the membership at her home course, Charles River Country Club.
New England Club Managers Association Members Donate to the Greater Boston Food Bank on November 8th 2012 Portsmouth, RI - New England Club Managers Association Members donated canned and non-perishable food items to The Greater Boston Food Bank at its annual fall workshop on Thursday at the The Carnegie Abbey Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The New England Club Managers Association is holding a food drive
from November 8, 2012 through December as part of its Clubs Collecting for Communities campaign. All of the food collected was donated to the Greater Boston Food Bank to benefit hungry families across eastern Massachusetts. What’s News The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund The 64th Annual Meeting was held on Monday, October 22, 2012 at Brae Burn Country Club. The beautiful fall day began with a small golf outing which was enjoyed by all. Immediately following golf was a cocktail reception, the Annual Meeting, and a delicious turkey sit down dinner.

The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee awarded its 2012 Denny Goodrich Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award to Phil Psaros, head professional at Brae Burn County Club. Mr. Psaros has been a great friend to the Ouimet Fund, playing in the Ouimet Marathon for 11 years as both an assistant professional and now the head professional at Brae Burn. Over those years Brae Burn has always been among the top fund raising clubs in the Marathon. Mr. Psaros has also been a great supporter of caddies and the Brae Burn caddie program is one of the best in the area.

Are Golf Course Designers Ruining The Game for Amateurs?
No. Just when you thought about every conceivable reason why your game sucks, here’s another: golf course designers are making courses too tough. Complain all you want about courses being too long, but according to two respected retired players - Lee Trevino and Tony Jacklin - golf course architects over the past decade are ruining the game because the courses are too damn difficult. Both claim that old-fashioned shot-making has been taken out of the game because the newer designs and courses that have been tweaked all require having to hit the ball high and long and land it soft, a talent possessed by pros, not amateurs. There was a time when golf courses were designed for all levels of play, where you had choices such as run it up, knock it down, shape it or be creative in getting satisfactory results, also known as taking a long walk with the putter. Let’s tackle this debate point by point. First, Trevino and Jacklin are “has-beens” who played at a time of persimmon woods, dead golf balls and without titanium or square-grooved clubs. Second, over the past 10 years more golf courses have closed than opened and only a handful of courses have opened in New England, since the economy is in a recession, and we don’t have enough players. Third, the game’s popularity is being driven over a cliff by the USGA because they now want to ban the use of long putters. So much for growing the game? Golf course designers are not ruining the game, the USGA and Royal & Ancient are because they have way too many rules! My favorite New England courses are not too difficult, and seem to have a common bond. I love Brain Silvadesigned courses like Waverly Oaks (1998), Renaissance (2005), Olde Scotland Links (1997), Red Tail (2002) and The Captains (1985). Unlike Greg Norman-designed courses featuring kidney-shaped, doomed greens or the pathetic layouts by Arnold Palmer-designers, which always need tweaking and redesign by far more skilled architects

after completion, my experiences on Silva courses are memorable, challenging and fun. I want to return, which is what designers want. While we are on the subject of favorites I also like Jack Nicklaus-designed courses such as Pinehills (2002), Ocean Edge (2007), Vermont National (1997) and many more in Myrtle Beach and Florida. Have you ever heard anyone bad-mouth the Rees Jones-designed course at Pinehills (2001)? There is nothing not to like about dramatic landscape changes, many natural hazards, bunkering galore around elevated greens at Pinehills, the most active public course in Massachusetts. Blackstone National (2000) is also a beautiful course by Jones, but unfortunately public players do not have access to two other gems - Nantucket (1998) or Golf Club of Cape Cod (2007). Tim Geary may argue that some course architects are mean, that you have to hit it high or die, that difficult courses cause longer rounds, more frustrated players and wear you out, but that is nonsense because you can always move up to the forward tees to shoot 95, or higher in Geary’s case. It’s a pipe dream to think you can play golf on any course in four hours, so don’t blame designers. The game is a copy-cat sport, if amateurs see the pros line up a putt from 360 degrees, then John Q. Public golfer is doing the same. I don’t know how they play golf in 3.5 hours in Ireland and Scotland and they walk, but in the States it takes 4.5 hours with carts. The intsy-bitsy piece of good news is that this season we have had spectacular weather, resulting in an increase in rounds played at public courses up 8% and at private courses up 4%. The guaranteed solution for amateurs to improve - get a lesson! Are Golf Course Designers Ruining The Game for Amateurs?
Thanks to being a golf writer I have had ample opportunity to play some of the finest courses in this country. In my 40 years of playing the game I’ve had some fine rounds, have had years when I carried a handicap as low as four and have actually won some tournaments. Those days of being a respectable player are gone. I can’t beat Gorman now and he can’t drive a cart straight, much less a Titleist. Still, I know a good course when I see one. I’ve played Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, Olympic Club, Pinehurst No. 2, The Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, Pleasant Valley, Wannamoisett, Newport and many other outstanding tracks. And I will say unequivocally that many of the modern designers have no concept of how to build a course that an average amateur can play with any degree of enjoyment. Lee Trevino has said many times that too many golf course architects are more concerned about building monuments to themselves than golf courses that will attract paying customers. Too many courses today are constructed in hopes that they will host the best players in the world one week out of 52. That’s wonderful for that one week, but what about the rest of the year when Tiger and the boys are someplace else? Now Gorman doesn’t agree with this premise, but why would he, considering the fact that he would probably record the same score at TPC Sawgrass as he would at the local miniature golf establishment? A ground ball is a ground ball, regardless of where you play. Many of the traditional courses are still lengthy, but not unplayable for the average player. The reason? Distance can be accommodated for with several sets of tees. Options are what designers such as Donald Ross, A.J. Tillinghast, Willie Park Jr., Alister Mackenzie and Arthur Hills built into their courses. Can’t hit the ball high and land it soft? That was okay, because these people gave
you the option of running the ball onto the green. Can’t do that on many of today’s modern designs. When the average to high handicapper comes faceto-face with firm, elevated greens that have more levels than a Manhattan townhouse, are surrounded by either wide lakes or seas of sand, it stops being recreation and turns into an obstacle course. People generally don’t like to fork over their hard earned cash to vacation at golf’s version of Parris Island. I’ve played the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, three times. It’s unplayable for an average player. It’s long, it’s arduous, it’s absolutely no fun. There are five other less famous courses on Kiawah that are joys on which to play. Pete Die is one of today’s more famous architects. He’s great for giving the PGA Tour a place to hold a tournament, great for creating a market for railroad ties. He’s no friend of four buddies going on holiday to whack it around for a week. When Jack Nicklaus first began designing he had some absolute disasters, but he learned. His courses are more in gear with the past, giving players a variety of ways to attack the holes. Jack was the absolute master at hitting high, long irons that settled softly onto hard greens and when he first began building courses he designed them for his game. He quickly realized you have to build courses that EVERYBODY can play. I’ve played some courses that have holes that require a 200 yard carry over a marsh from the member’s tees. That eliminates a lot of players. The tees on the other side of the marsh are so close to the green that it’s insulting. Golf is a difficult game but it doesn’t have to be impossible. It can still be challenging and yet enjoyable. You should be able to play a round without going through an entire dozen balls and having the ball retriever become the most important instrument in your bag.
