Turn on to exotic with
Golf vacations in far away places.
With the holidays, a merry amalgam of fun, good cheer, food, friends and family, travelling to exotic places can well be the star on the tree, the kiss under the mistletoe, the plum in the plum pudding. Combine that with special gifts from the golf elf and must-have perks and it’s merry, merry all the way. Morocco
Close to great golf and seductive city of Marrakech with its Kasbahs and markets, the splendid Palais Namaskar makes an ideal base for avid golfers. Once you experience the stunning pools, white arches colonnades, outdoor baths, tall palms and gardens, it will be hard to leave.
Play golf at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, surrounded by inspiring views, eucalyptus and orange trees or tee up at the 27-hole Royal Golf Club, one of the oldest golf courses in Morocco. The Palmeraie Golf Club by Robert Trent Jones and Samanah Golf Club by Nicklaus Design.

Shades of mystery….
The sun shines almost constantly in Morocco especially the desert. A good pair of sunglass with all the necessary protection to keep out harmful rays is essential. Oakley photochromic sunglasses are engineered to help you maintain peak performance regardless of the light conditions outside. In the bright sunlight, photochromic lenses filter out 100% of all harmful ultraviolet rays. As the sun goes down, they automatically adjust to the fading light. (from $220) Oakley.com
Los Cabos. Baja, Mexico Fifty 5 years ago where desert meets sea on the tip of the Baja Peninsula, there wasn’t much except crashing waves rolling up on debris-strewn beaches and temper-
atures averaging a boring old 78 degrees year-round. Sure there was a new luxury resort, La Palmilla, a paparazzi-free vacation zone for Hollywood celebs, but this part of Mexico was not on the global golfers’ “A” list. Today the cactus-encrusted landscape of Los Cabos has morphed into one of the world’s most elite golf destinations with snazzy resort complexes and several show-stopping courses by world’s top architects. The Palmilla Golf Club course by Nicklaus reveals spectacular sea views backed by cacti and plunging arroyos. Cabo Real by Robert Trent Jones Jr. climbs up the hillside, then drops down toward the water while the Jack Nicklaus Signature Ocean Course, centerpiece for the 1,800-acre Cabo del Sol Community is arguably the most challenging in Los Cabos, a stunner with 1.5 miles of oceanfront, rock outcroppings and views of sea, mountains and desert. When you get to the 15th tee of the Cabo del Sol Desert Course by Tom Weiskoph and and catch the scenery, you may be at a loss of words. One guy came up with, “Gee willik- ers,” albeit in jest. But you get the picture. Many holes in Cabo are like that. Bethel Inn Courses in Cabo are not inexpensive with green fees typically running between $150 and $350. Booking a golf package may be your best bet. For example you can combine four nights in the Melia Cabo Real, an all-inclusive beachfront resort giving you three days of golf from $865 or book a package at the Hilton Los Cabos priced at $895 for four nights and three rounds of golf or $1495 for seven nights with five days of golf. Cabogolftours.net Stay at Secrets Marquis Los Cabos, a beach, Golf, Spa and Casitas Resort on the Sea of Cortez, and you will not only enjoy golf on several courses nearby, but you can go horseback riding, explore the countryside on an off-road 4x4 desert adven ture, go sport fishing, whale watching and find other cool things to do. secretsresorts.com Must-Have Perk

Bermuda
On the Reefs Club brochure, there is a saying by Mark Twain, “Bermuda was like being in Heaven.” But then wasn’t it Twain who referred to golf as a “good walk spoiled?” There aren’t many islands left on the planet quite like it. Here pink is a macho color, shorts are worn with jackets and ties to the office and cricket is a national passion not a goofy bug. Warm turquoise waters wash up onto coral-tinged beaches; a semi-tropical climate allows you to play golf year- round; and traffic moves at the astounding speed of 23 mph. Bougainvillea tumbles over limestone walls flanking winding seacoast roads and precious candy-colored cottages hide in hillside. For golfers, it gets even better with more courses for its size than any other country in the world. Several resorts offer golf packages. For example the The Fairmont Southampton gives you three nights at the hotel with two rounds at Riddell’s Bay Golf Club, Bermuda’s oldest course. Included in the $479 per night price is complimentary transportation to the course, a good thing as Bermuda does not offer car rentals. The resort has its own on-site 18-hole par 3 course, the Willow Stream spa and fitness center, PADI dive center, tennis, beach club and nine places to eat and drink. www.visitbermuda.com; Fairmont.com

Sock it to ya….
Zensah compression socks may sound therapeutic — and they should because they are, but — the colors and argyle patterns go the extra mile with combos like pink (think Bermuda), turquoise, black and lime reminding us that something that works can look great. Since Bermuda can be a tad cooler in the winter than other island destinations, Zensah should be a great item to tuck into your bag. compressionsport.com
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic, the second largest country in the Caribbean, is known for its all-inclusive resorts, golf, baseball, merengue and cigars. Majestic mountains, lush tropical vegetation, deep rivers, beaches and clear fresh limestone pools are an ideal landscape for golf designers like Pete Dye who has built three courses in one of the DR’s largest develop-
ments, Casa de Campo on the southern coast east of Santo Domingo. Dye’s “Teeth of the Dog” listed as #35 in the world by Golf Magazine, put the DR on the world’s golf map. Casa de Campo is home to close to 2,000 villas, a marina, shipyard, and close to 74 restaurants and there are so many things to do. Hang out at the pool or beach, go horseback riding, play tennis, grab some spa time and tool around in your private golf cart. Casadecampo.com Another choice popular with those who prefer allinclusive resorts, Iberostar Bavaro Golf Club on the Playa Bavaro Beach, features a new course by P.B. Dye. Accommodations in two-story bungalows overlook the water and gardens while facilities include a waterpark, spa, tennis, fitness center and a boatload of watersports. Iberostar.com

Maui, Hawaii
In Wailea, there is a trend away from plastic, glitz and glossy to more traditional, cultural and historically significant themes and entertainment. Play any of Wailea’s three courses on Maui: Old Blue, Emerald or Gold and you’ll be hitting shots against the formidable backdrop of the sea and the towering 10,023-foot dormant volcano, Mt. Haleakala. Set on the southwest shore of Maui, these three 18-hole layouts are characterized by lush deep green fairways offset by black lava walls along with lakes and lavish landscaping — even glimpses of humpback whales spouting. Holiday Gift Guide
The commercialism of the holidays has gone overboard in recent years so we’re scaling it back with items that are custom, one of a kind, handmade, or vintage making perfect gifts for your whole family of golf enthusiasts. Fore!Wood™ by Dock Artisan
Fore!Wood™ by Dock Artisan make great gifts for all golf fans who will appreciate the juxtaposition of old world sport and new high tech. These creatively named, limited release vintage golf club iPhone docks all are one of a kind. Every dock is a true vintage Persimmon and Laminated Maple wood club that has been used from the era of 1930s to the 1970s when the term “hit it on the screws” was coined. What’s even better is they are hand-crafted from Etsy.com. If you aren’t familiar with the site, it supports entrepreneurs and only allows handmade or vintage times for sale. Techies who just cringed as they read “handmade” fear not, all the technology is incorporated with a USB port on the back to connect to a com-
puter and also built to charge your iPhone 5. This dock has been cleaned and polished with a combination of beeswax, carnauba wax, and orange oil. This enhances the natural beauty and depth of grain in finished woods. This blend also prevents further drying of the wood and deterioration of the finish. To purchase visit the shop named Dock Artisan at Etsy.com.
Pivotheads Video Glasses
Wish you had that amazing putt, chip or drive on video? The chances someone recorded it with their iPhone or camera is very unlikely. For instance, while I replay the supreme joy of recently making a 70 foot putt over and over in my head, it would be awesome to have that on video, obvi-

ously so I can post to Facebook and brag about it. The Pivotheads video glasses make this possible. Another way to use the amazing product is to work on your golf swing. There are other cameras out there that do this but require having another hold them, distracting that person away from their own game. Now essentially the other person just has to look at you while your swinging for you to see if anything needs to be corrected. Available in a few colors and models, the most popular is the chameleon, unfortunately also sold out. Not just fake glasses, included are polarized Sunglass lenses. Connect Pivotheads to any computer and Mobile phone with the App that can configure video recording and image capture settings, download files, and more Cool specs include 1080p and 30fps with a 720p, 60fps setting, Auto, Bright, or Dim Exposure Options, customizable capture settings, 8 megapixel photos (same as iPhone) with time lapse and burst sequences up to 16 photos. View the entire collection or to purchase visit www.pivothead.com.
GFORE/casters
Most people wear golf gloves that are golf ball white, or snow white, or tee box white. The point is they’re all mostly white, that is until they turn golf grip black, grey and dirty. Colorful gloves are not only stylish, they stay looking newer lon-
ger which is a necessity with our “throw it away and get a new one” American mantra, ourselves included. There is nothing like a new quality golf glove that smells like leather and not sweat. Get the school golf team ready for the season with really nice, colorful cabretta leather gloves at a discount price in exchange for feedback on the products! Proven by the GFORE/casters program, G/FORE values feedback regarding the realworld fit, function and quality of their products. Of course they ask tour players and pros for their opinion, but think of how important a school golf team would feel if they had an impact on the design of the gloves. There is also a corporate logo program making them great company gifts as they are a quality product that will not rack up the bill of the company spending account.
Photo Ball Markers
Think about the reaction of the favorite golfer in your life who opens your gift to find a set of 3 ball markers with their kids or loved ones photo on them! It is a functional gift that will have a special place in their heart. Ball markers never seem to be your own as they have corporate or brand name logos on them. They are available in whatever form you like, visor clips, divot tools, key-chains, and magnets for if you already a glove with a magnet. There is even a necklace add on, where the magnet at-

taches to a chain like a new version of the locket. The magnet for gloves or the necklace is our functional choice as we always know right where it is, there is no fumbling around to find it. Clipping it to the visor is not too bad, but sometimes it is not always easy just to slip it on there. To order, visit photoballmarker.com, a set of 3 is only $30 including shipping.
I’d Tap That by Black Out Tees
Laughing is the only way to spread holiday cheer and this “I’d Tap That” t-shirt from Black Out Tees is hilarious gift for any golfer in your life with a sense of humor. At only $15 they make a perfect Yankee Grab or Swap gift for your golf buddies, as a forewarning it may not be funny if it a lady that doesn’t play golf receives it. Or if you have someone specific in mind that would love it visit Blackouttees.com to customize. Choose from options like baby doll Ts, hoodies, sweatshirts, tanktops, long-sleeves shirts in whatever size you need up to 5X. Then choose your gift recipients favorite color from options like golf green, evergreen, olive, red, blue, maroon, pink, purple, or gray. In fact, if

you think this is not funny at all, create your own slogan or logo.
Oakley Women’s Tomboy Fleece Jacket
The Women’s Tomboy Fleece Jacket from Oakley offers our favorite style, dressy athletic gear. The notched lapels and a tailored fit that deliver a bit of uptown chic to your game. The crisp classic blazer style can truly be worn to work, to the course, and out at night. The Tomboy Jacket is features OHydrolix™ technology manages sweat by wicking moisture away and removing it for quick evaporation. Cut from an incredibly soft comfortable cotton blend fleece, cotton is a true breathable fabric. No matter how many companies tell you their polyester is breathable, it still smells funky! Stay away from fabrics that are more than 95% polyester and stay away from acrylic as it tends to be chilly. This jacket is a great blend of fabric, 60% Cotton / 40% Polyester mix. At only $48, it is a very reasonable price for a high quality fleece. We shouldn’t have to pay $100 just to stay warm. The reason the price of fleece has gone up is because big brand names are
greedy. We wouldn’t be buying fleece at this price if we knew the cost of goods sold. Purchase at Discountgolfworld.com and avoid in store shopping.
Bstyle Legwarmers
We’re going out on a limb here in saying leg warmers will be a great addition to any women’s golf outfit on chilly days. Not everyone favors the sporty style of argyle knee socks or the comfort level of compression socks. These leg warmers are current with the popular boho style, and we love the softer lace with less elastic to pinch the skin. They are also versatile to be fashionable over pants and under boots for the boot topper look with added
warmth. For festivity we featured red and green, perhaps more stylish is black or earth tone colors. For snowbirds traveling south for the winter you know it can get into the cool 60s, even in Florida. Leg warmers are just the thing to keep you warm, sexy and cute in your golf skort because bundling up sort of defeats the whole purpose of traveling. If you want to wear pants there are plenty of opportunities to play snow golf in New England like at Stowe on January 23 and Attitash on March 23. Again, support start up entrepreneurs instead of big businesses by purchasing items like these from shops on Etsy.com, this one is one of our favorites from the shop bstyle and handmade for $28.

Celebrity Golfer: Danny Ainge by Leigh MacKay
Danny Ainge has fashioned one of the most successful careers in the annals of sports, and his legacy still has a few chapters yet to be written. Currently, he is the President of Basketball Operations for the Boston Celtics, a promotion he received in 2008 after the team won its 17th World Championship. He was also named the NBA Executive of the Year. Ainge, now 54, is best known, of course, as the Celtics star guard who, in 1981, joined Larry Bird and an All-Star cast, went to the finals four times, and won the last two Celtics World Championships in 1984 and 1986 before the 2008 victory. After the Celtics, Ainge played for the Sacramento Kings, the Portland Trail Blazers, and the Phoenix Suns before retiring in 1995, but he returned to the Suns as head coach for three years, 1996-1999. He entered the Celtics front office in 1993. Ainge will always be remembered for his unrelenting, in-your-face defense and his deft, nothing-butnet three pointers. Ainge is also well known for his basketball prowess at BYU where he won the John Wooden and Eastman awards in his senior year as the nation’s best college basketball player. Not as readily remembered is that Ainge played second base for the Toronto Blue Jays for three summers while at BYU before opting for the NBA. A native of Eugene, Oregon, Ainge began his impressive sports accomplishments at North Eugene HS, where he was named a high-school first-team
All-American in football, basketball, and baseball, the only athlete in the nation to this date to be so honored. Danny Ainge and his wife Michelle live in Wellesley and have six children and 11 grandchildren. I met Ainge at the Deutsche Bank Championship Pro-Am where he was playing with Jordan Spieth, new Celtics Coach Brad Stevens, team co-owner Steve Pagliuca, and former host of the DBC, Seth Waugh. NEGM: Did you enjoy the Pro-Am? DA: Yes, a great day, especially playing with Jordan, such an up-and-coming star. What a great ball striker! Coach Stevens, Steve, and I had our moments, too, and it was a pleasure to play with Seth Waugh, an excellent golfer. NEGM: How did you get into golf? DA: I became serious about the game at 16 when I started caddying at the Eugene CC. I received my first real golf lesson there—from Peter Jacobsen, then an All-American at the nearby U of Oregon. He gave me tips that I have remembered and utilize to this day, and he got me excited about the game. I have been a golf fanatic ever since, and Peter and I later played together a number of times. NEGM: Where do you play most of your golf now? Evaluate your game. New England golf courses that you like? DA: I am a member of Wellesley CC, but I don’t get to play there as often as I would like because of my busy schedule and frequent travel. I now have a 4.0 GHIN Index, and over the last 25 years, it has

fluctuated from 0 to 5. I like to think that one of my strengths is my driver, which I usually hit straight and about 270 yards. I hit my irons well enough, hitting my 5-iron around 195 yards. Other strengths are my scrambling ability and short game. A few of my favorite courses are Boston Golf Club, the Country Club, Kittansett, Old Sandwich, Newport CC, and Turner Hill. NEGM: Besides Jake and Spieth, name some other golf professionals and celebrities that have been fun to play with. DA: Billy Casper, Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller and his sons Andy, Scott, and Todd, and Mike “Radar” Reid. I also played a lot of golf with teammates Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Rick Robey. I still say in touch with Larry and Kevin. I played often with Michael Jordan, sometimes in Boston and sometimes in Chicago. I played frequently with Phoenix teammates Dan Majerle and Charles Barkley. Believe it or not, Charles was a mid-80’s player in those days and swung without a hitch. NEGM: Who would you include in your Dream Foursome of today? Of any time period? DA: Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller, and Jack Nicklaus. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, and Arnold Palmer. NEGM: With what charities are you involved? DA: I am involved in a number of charities, but there are two in particular. The Forever Young Foundation of former 49’er QB Steve Young, which focuses on serving youth through sports, education, and technology. And the Shamrock Foundation of the Boston Celtics, a multifaceted program that directly benefits children in need. NEGM: Your 1985-86 World Championship year is arguably the best Celtics team (67-15) ever. What will you always remember about it? DA: The unwavering belief that we had in each other. Larry Bird and Kevin McHale were at the very peak of their games. Dennis Johnson and Robert Parish played
with All-Star intensity. The bench additions of Bill Walton and Scott Wedman, and with me just coming into my own peak, all these components served to make us confident in our ability to win. We knew how good we were. NEGM: From your playing days, what non-Celtics would be your All-Star starting five? DA: Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Isiah Thomas, and Dominique Wilkins. NEGM: That 2007-08 Championship season (66-16) was also a remarkable team that you put together. What will you always remember about it? DA: I remember how exciting that year was for Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Ray Allen. All three had been on lottery teams the year before [the Celtics went 24-58]. Paul told me after the 2007 season that the game was just not as much fun anymore. Getting “The Big Three” together on the same team was electrifying, and they all hit it off right from the start. To have everything fall into place and win the Championship was absolutely spectacular. For me, it was a more fulfilling feeling winning the World Championship as an executive than as a player. As a player, you are really happy, but, basically, you are most aware of how it affects you as an individual. As an executive, the Championship was more gratifying for me because I could see how it greatly affected the many other people who had contributed to the team’s success—the fans, the front office, marketing, ticket sales, concessions, media, etc. I could see how much joy that Championship brought to so many. NEGM: With the 2013-14 Celtics new coach and new look, what can we Celtic fans expect to see on the parquet floor? DA: I think the fans will watch a young, athletic team play with a lot of passion. A team that will play together, play hard, and surprise a lot of folks. I’m excited about this season and looking forward to it. a house on Chappaquiddick on Martha’s Vineyard that I bought in January. We’ll spend Christmas in the new house. I enjoy playing golf at Charles River, Edgartown GC, Milton Hoosic, Myopia Hunt Club, Sankaty Head, and Vineyard GC.

The Las Vegas golf market has evolved greatly over the years. In years past casinos got nervous if visitors were anywhere other than the gaming floor. The golf product then was also more pedestrian in terms of challenges provided and services extended. Today’s golf market in Vegas has taken proactive steps in maximizing high level customer service as the only sure way to keep tee sheets full. Walters Golf operates three (3) golf facilities -- Bali Hai, Royal Links and Desert Pines. All within nine miles of The Las Vegas Strip and each themed in presenting a different golf experience. Not only is the close proximity a huge plus -- but Walters provides a range of attractive packages that encourage multiple rounds at a significantly reduced rate. Want a caddie to assist your time playing? No issue. In fact, Walters provides its own distinctive Par Mates program exclusively at Royal Links - whereby you hire an attractive lady to provide golf services for your round there. Only in Vegas at www.waltersgolf.com Want to get away from the hustle and bustle when there? Try the Las Vegas Golf Paiute Resort – just 25 miles northwest of The Strip. 54 holes await from the handiwork of Pete Dye. Be sure to play the flagship Wolf Course. Word to the wise – avoid most
afternoons when heavy wind can whip through the property making a round there as tough as you will ever face. The Wolf reopens on January 1, 2014. No question the name appeal of such layouts as Shadow Creek, Cascata, Rio Seco and Wynn are all top tier – but so are the prices charged. Looking for another alternative? Head 55 minutes from The Strip to the Jack Nicklaus Coyote Springs / Chase Course. Originally planned for a multi-course operation under the umbrella of the PGA of America – the nationwide recession caused a scaling down of the overall goal. The key to playing the Chase Course at Coyote Springs well is choosing the correct tees and taking to heart Clint Eastwood’s famous quote, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” Piggybacking off of the success of the Myrtle Beach World Amateur – Sin City has created its own version with the Las Vegas World Amateur. The 2nd annual event takes place February 10-14 and one can register via www.lvworldam.com. The competition is staged on several area courses and provides a slew of prizes for a range of golf levels. Understanding golfers and making their visit second to none – is a hallmark of Las Vegas. Making tomorrow even better than yesterday is the core creed of this reality fantasy land. Viva Las Vegas indeed.

Alabama Gulf
Astounding Golf! T
he gulf of Alabama is a fins and skins game to thrill. Aboard the Sea Hunter, Captain Ricky speeds to the best ocean spot while first mate Alex baits the poles. After simple instructions, the lines sink, no complicated casting. The result is immediate, if you feel it and reel it. Anticipation is wild. What is on the hook? It is a tug of war with the unknown. How big is it? Is it pretty? Can we eat it? Whoops, it feels like it slipped away, drat! But wait, it is back running against the line. Hold tight to the pole so as not to lose it. How exhilarating when the fins appear. Too small, or out of season fish are tossed back, often snapped up by dolphins. Keepers are cleaned and cooked right on the boat. How fresh is that? Fish in the morning, golf in the afternoon at Kiva Dunes, annually recognized as number one in Alabama. It was well designed by Jerry Pate as requested by Scrappy Edgemon after a chance meeting on a green of the U of A course when he played through and made a hole in one, making a million in one partnership. Later the Robert Trent Jones Trail was developed through Alabama and this fall celebrated it’s ten millionth player. Magnolia Grove in Mobile is hot on the RTJ trail as its Crossings Course hosts the
LPGA event. It is parkland style, with expanded fairways for friendlier acceptance. Pull up a rocking chair on the clubhouse porch to breathe in the blossoms of Magnolia and Azaleas. Rich with history and new in outlook, The Battle House in Mobile (home of the first Mardi Gras) was once headquarters to Andrew Jackson, now a lavish Renaissance hotel with artwork at every turn. A restored Tiffany glass dome stamps the hallowed foyer while the rooftop view and spa scream modern urbanism. Next on the trail in Point Clear, Alabama, a former confederate hospital is now the elegant Grand Hotel Marriott Resort, Golf Club & Spa. A cannon firing ceremony salutes sailors of past and present every day. Boardwalks link a fishing wharf, stocked with bait and poles, to a marina, a soft sandy beach, an elaborate pool, an unsurpassed spa and The Robert Trent Jones Trail’s Lakewood Golf Club. Course excavation was delayed by the revelation of skeletons to be researched and documented. Perseverance prevailed. Spanish moss laces oak trees lining a triumphant design along spring fed lakes and streams. Conditions are outstanding. The Steak House serves an exquisite dinner. Cuisine is not a sidebar to Alabama golf, rather a main attraction.

Fresh sea catches abandon the Southern Fried stigma. In Bubba Gump’s home territory, the shrimp stands tall. Oysters too are a specialty served cooked and raw on the half shell at Wintzell’s. Cobalt Restaurant is tried and true blue, overlooking the bay in Orange Beach. Mangrove Snapper is snagged the same day and blackened. The first day of red snapper’s short season made it a no brainer selection at the new Louisiana Peninsula. In Gulf Shores, The Beach Club, part of Spectrum Resorts has towers of luxury suites with balcony views of pristine pools, Jacuzzis and the bay with creamy white sand and lulling waves. The intimate spa is co-located with the fitness center downstairs and the fabulous Coast restaurant upstairs, both peering out to sea. Nearby, Gulf Shores Golf Club is unadulterated. What you see is what you get. Bunkers and water are directly in players’ view. No tricks or gimmicks; keep it in play and enjoy the day. The Peninsula Golf and Racquet Club is the epitome of quality. The 27-hole Earl Stone design winds through the natural habitat bordering the Bon Secour Wildlife Preserve. Service is at a premium as General Manager, Todd Edwards and staff exceed expectations. Rock Creek Golf Club is 6920 yards of rolling thunder through the southern comfort of Fairhope, Alabama. Nestled among large brick homes, the neighborhood is forgotten as the course presents plethora of challenges - carry overs of
marsh and wetlands to streams and ponds. Large timber bulkhead greens highlight this southern gem of gulf coast golf. The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail was the brainchild of Retirement Systems of Alabama CEO, Dr. Bronner to strengthen the state economy through tourism. Their $2.5B industry increased to $9.3B in ten years, a financial success for Alabama and a sweet deal for traveling golfers. Happy trails! www.rtjgolf.com www.alabama.travel

Two Good Rounds by Elisa Gaudet
12 Days of Christmas
19th Hole Remix A
s I reflect upon the 2013 year I am blessed to have visited and experienced some of the most beautiful golf locations around the United States and the world. Beyond having the opportunity to play these amazing courses and cover tournaments, thus experiencing the best players in the world compete at the highest level, it was the people I met along the way that made the real difference. The fraternity and sorority of golfers and the golf community no matter where you go in the world is alive and strong. As if an unwritten code the love we all share for this game called golf transcends the sport and joins together friends, families, colleagues, celebrities and many more often is support of a charity or just for a good laugh and friendly competition. With that I lift my glass in Two Good Rounds fashion and toast all the golfers and wish you a spectacular 2014 filled with more golf and more love!
On the 12th day of Christmas my bartender said to me…. ”After 12 months of golf travel this is what your passport and bar tab told me”:

Clubs For 2014
In recent years it has become a common practice for club manufacturers to announce their models for the coming golf season at the end of the previous season. In other words even now well before the traditional timing and venue for club announcements, January’s PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, we know quite a bit about clubs for 2014. However though they weren’t yet available to the public some models such as TaylorMade Golf’s SLDR driver, covered in a previous issue, have been in use on the professional tours for months and even have wins to their credit. (The SLDR was used by Brandy Snedecker to win the RBC Canadian Open and Henrik Stenson for his victory in the Tour Championship). This month we have compiled a list of those clubs announced so far that we found interesting and are passing along information about them to our readers. 56 | Subscribe at myNEGM.com | November / December 2013
Mizuno Golf Mizuno, known for making irons used by low handicap amateurs and professionals, has the new MP-54 irons which certainly fall in that category but the company is also looking at the iron market for higher handicaps with another new model, the JPZ EZ Forged Irons. MP-54s are for those with handicaps up to 12
Adams Golf Models with designs done after Adams was acquired by TaylorMade Golf almost two years ago are now being brought to market and the New Idea Hybrid Irons are a good example of the direction Adams is taking. These super game improvement irons are made for the large segment of golfers who usually hit the ball off center with impact towards the toe. Adams research showed that players with handicaps of 15 and higher consistently missed the sweet spot by as much as one-half inch and New Ideas are meant in part at least to compensate. The effect is to make the sweet spot larger and Adam’s testing showed compared to their Idea a12 OS Hybrid Irons, the New Idea Hybrid Irons give 44% additional ball speed on off-center hits and 24% more ball speed on center impacts because of increased flex from the unsupported faces. Adams also has a new family of ‘better player’ clubs named XTD. The driver is tested four times during the manufacturing process to make sure the face’s flex is as close to the USGA limits as possible. Along with their well known Cut-Thru Slot, which Adams first introduced, and the aerodynamic head shape they are reporting much higher ball speeds for the XTD. “We’re touting that it’s the hottest face in golf by using the strictest manufacturing tolerances,” said Honea. “Every feature we’ve built into the XTD family is distinctive, and we’ve merged them all together into the ultimate driver.”
and have a stepped muscle design that puts extra thickness behind the face to improve the feel at impact. Forged from a single billet of steel, the 3- through 7-iron have with a milled pocket and 8-iron through pitching wedge are a muscle design. In addition the perimeter of the MP-54s is ground to create a thinner top line and reduce the width of the sole. They were characterized by David Llewellyn, Golf Club R&D Manager when he said, “The MP-54 is for players who have grown up on forgiving golf equipment – but want a little bit more from their shot making. It still has all the forgiveness most modern players are used to – but with so much more feel and workability.” Mizuno’s JPX EZ Forged Irons are game improvement type irons for players if 10 handicap and higher. Forged irons are usually thought of as being used by scratch amateurs and professionals because of the inherent feel and control but Mizuno felt these benefits should be available to less skilled players as well. “During ideation, development and creation of the JPX EZ Forged iron we knew it would be in a class all by itself, which, in the golf industry, is difficult to claim and something we are extremely proud of,” said Dick Lyons, Vice President and

General Manager, Mizuno USA, Inc. “The distance and forgiveness screams game-improvement, but we’ve been able to channel those characteristics in a grain flow forged iron that’ll change the way golfers look, think and feel over the golf ball. ”
In TMaG’s testing the SpeedBlades produced distance gains because of the slot behind the clubface which combined with the center gravity being low in the clubhead help give a high launch and more ball speed.
TaylorMade Golf
Tour Edge Golf
As mentioned previously the SLDR Driver (there are now also SLDR fairways and hybrids) from TMaG is already receiving attention and though not especially thought of as a putter company the new Ghost Tour Putter line is also getting lots of favorable mentions. According to Brian Bazzel, TMaG’s director of iron, wedge and putter development, “We spent a full year perfecting every detail on our Ghost Tour putters, making each one a thing of beauty, elegance and excellence. Golfers will be blown away when they set each of these putters down for the first time, and again
Tour Edge has a new driver out, the seventh in the XCG series, called the XCG7 (460 cc) and a second Beta model with slightly smaller clubhead. Each has an adjustable hosel (8.5 to 12 degrees loft) plus a variable thickness sole the company says produces more trampoline effect at impact. There are four sole weights in the XCG7 placed low towards the rear of the clubhead for higher launch while the ones in the XCG7 Beta are higher and closer to the face for a lower launch angle. Tour Edge Golf also has a new limited addition fairway that has our attention named the Exotics CB Pro. The head size is smaller than that of the popular CB2 fairways but what is really different is the sole with what the company has named a “Slip Stream” design that minimizes turf contact. This of course is meant to retain as much clubhead speed through the hit as possible to give distance and control.” David Glod, president said, “When we decided to create the Exotics line, this is the type of club I had envisioned. It’s very exciting to be introducing a product of this caliber to the market; there isn’t anything else like it. Is it expensive? Yes, probably the most expensive fairway wood available to the public. But, it’s just that good combined with the Speeder shafts and it’s also packaged with a highend, leather headcover from Stitch Golf.” Suggested retail is $499.99 which to our knowledge does make it the most expensive fairway available.
when they experience the performance.” There is a choice of seven shapes: three blade-style putters (Daytona 12, Daytona 62 and Sebring 62) and four mallets (Maranello 81, Fontana 72, Monte Carlo 12 and Corza 72). Each model has black ion plating on the sole and a white crown meant for contrast with green grass. Alignment lines consist of heavy black parallels perpendicular to the face on the trailing edge. Combined they create a very strong confidence-building visual effect that the putter is on the desired line. TaylorMade is also promoting an interesting line of irons called SpeedBlade which replace last year’s RocketBladez. The two share several design features most notably the slot cut in the sole behind the clubface to allow the clubface additional flex at impact.

Tucson A Southwest Golf Oasis by NEGM Staff
The first thought that comes to mind in New England when we think about desert golf has always been Las Vegas, Scottsdale and Palm Springs. That all may be changing as the sunniest city in the U.S., Tucson, has now become one of the top golf destinations in the country. What has made the city of Tucson so popular for desert golf is simple, you can enjoy all the amenities at some of the finest facilities in the Southwest at about half the price. While we all dream of playing the great desert courses in Vegas and Scottsdale paying $150.00 to $250.00 for greens fees in season is a stretch for the average golfer. The city of Tucson has always been known as ‘Old Pueblo’ but ‘Oasis De Golf ‘ may be a more suitable name for this golfers’ paradise. Tucson is located just over 100 miles south of Phoenix. Direct flights are available from most northeast airports at great rates for about the same cost as going to Florida. The city is surrounded by
five mountain ranges, the Santa Catalina, Rincon, Santa Rita, and Tortolita and borders a number of state and national parks that are popular tourist destinations. There are over 40 golf courses in the region and almost a dozen resorts that offer great golf packages with all the amenities at attractive price points. You will experience designs by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Arthur Hills, Tom Fazio, Tom Weiskopf,Tom Lehman, Bob Cupp and Jack Nicklaus. With mild temperatures and almost year-round sunshine, Tucson, is a prominent golf destination in the American Southwest surrounded by scenic mountain ranges and deserts. Tucson golf courses vary according to their locations. North Tucson courses often feature more trees and grassy landscapes while those closer to downtown boast more cactus plants along their fairways. Several golf courses have hosted PGA and LPGA tournaments. Each year in February the World Golf Championships-Accen-

ture Match Play is held at The Ritz Carlton at Dove Mountain, a signature Jack Nicklaus course that host the top 64 players in the world. Tucson boast some of the finest golf resorts in the southwest with the Ritz Carton Golf Club at Dove Mountain, Omni Tucson National Resort, which was home to the PGA Tour’s Chrysler Classic, The Westin La Paloma & Country Club, The Lodge at Ventana Canyon / Lowes Ventana Canyon and The JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa which was originally TPC Tucson, home of the Tucson Open where Phil Mickelson had his first win in 1991. At the Casino Del Sol Resort Tucson’s newest golf club, The Sewailo Golf Club designed by Native American Notah Begay opens in early December. The challenging course measures 7400 yards from the championship tees. The course features an extensive driving range and practice areas for chipping and putting. A full complement of Callaway Golf rental equipment is also available. Troon Golf, the undisputed worldwide leader in top-shelf golf experiences, is a valued partner with Sewailo Golf Club. The course is open to guests of the Resort and
the general public. Sewailo Golf Club is managed by Troon Golf, a Scottsdale based golf management company that oversees properties in 29 states and 26 countries. casinodelsol.com Though much smaller than the Valley of the Sun, Tucson’s golf courses pack a major punch with scores of courses ranging from executive casual plays to high-end, nationally recognized courses from the best designers in the game. Rest assured, there is no such thing as a $200-plus green fee right now in Tucson, though Scottsdale has come down in price in the last years more than Tucson has, mostly because Tucson never inflated itself as high. Like most of the Southwest desert golf destinations like Palm Springs and Las Vegas, Tucson’s course shines brightest from January-thru-April. This is when green fees and demand is highest. Tucson is becoming a hot destination for golfers and the word is getting out, especially in eastern U.S. regions. If you want a great desert golf experience that has a package for almost any price point than Tucson which is the sunniest city in the country is your place. visittucson. org For Local Golf tucsoncitygolf.com

Molori Unplugged by John Molori
John Rooke:
Talking, Teaching, and Tees John Rooke is beginning his 25th year as the voice of the Providence Friars and his second decade as the public address announcer for the Patriots. In addition, he is the sports editor for GoLocalProv.com and GoLocalWorcester.com, and works for IMG Sports Network, NBC Sports Radio, and WEEI in Providence. The 54-year-old Rooke also teaches sports journalism at Emerson College and was named one of the nation’s top sports broadcasting instructors by the Sportscasters Talent Agency of America. Somewhere amid all of this, he finds time to play golf. Says Rooke, “I started playing in middle school when I first picked up some of my dad’s old graphite shaft clubs and persimmon woods. We had an old municipal course not too far from home. I’d get in a quick nine, probably shoot 60, and feel pretty good about myself!” The Texas native cut his golf teeth at the Colonial in Fort Worth. He relates, “I grew up walking the famed fairways that Ben Hogan called home. I never missed a Colonial tournament until I moved to New England. The first courses I played here were Swansea, Quidnessett, and Wannamoisett, but I also have a soft spot for Chemawa in Attleboro.” Rooke’s approach to the game is mildly competitive. “Honestly, I’ve never taken a lesson. I watch a few golf shows, read the magazines, and fiddle with the hybrids. I took the game very seriously when I lived in San Antonio and worked for the Spurs. I played with a lot of the players and team personnel, and we really got into it for a couple of years.” Rooke revels in the unique challenges of some southern New England courses. He relates, “I love Wannamoisett and those slick greens! I also enjoy Warwick, Cranston, and Alpine. (Rhode Island PGA pro) Eddie Kirby is a friend, so I’ve got to put that plug in for Alpine!” Rooke’s golf bucket list includes Pebble Beach, Augusta, Bethpage Black, and St. Andrews. He hosts an annual tournament to benefit the Sargent Rehabilitation Center in Warwick, and has hosted golf shows on ESPN Radio and WEEI. Rooke also hosted “Golfing the World,” syndicated nationally
on Fox Sports Net. Along the way, he has walked the fairways with many athletes and coaches. He states, “When I worked in the NBA, we rarely talked shop. The focus was always on trying to take the next hole for a couple of bucks or bragging rights! I’m probably not good enough to play with coaches now. Some of them are way better golfers than they ever were as coaches!” Rooke recalls a near miss golf memory. “My closest call with a hole in one came at Wanumetonomy in Middletown, RI, where I hit the flag stick on a par 3 that ran down the stick and into the hole, and then popped out! I tapped in for birdie from about two inches and saved myself a fortune on the bar tab.” Brushes with the noted and notorious also highlight Rooke’s links lore. He explains, “I once played Newport Country Club with Hall of Famer Jane Blalock. I was nervous as all get out, and scared myself into probably the best round I ever played. “My cart partner that day was the infamous Joe Mollicone, who was responsible for the banking crisis to hit Rhode Island in 1990. That was a helluva day, and pretty cool for a guy who lives on a cranberry bog in Berkley, MA. I’ve been blessed, for sure.” John Molori is the co-author of “The Cracker Jack Collection: Baseball’s Prized Players.” Read his columns at facebook.com/johnmolori. Email John at molorimedia@aol.com.

Ross’ Rulings The Murky Line Between Inadvertent Rules Infractions And Cheating by Jack Ross The introduction to the Rules of Golf emphasizes that, since most competition is conducted without the supervision of officials, the game relies on the integrity of the individual to show consideration for other players and abide by the Rules. “All players should conduct themselves in a disciplined manner, demonstrating courtesy and sportsmanship at all
Simon Dyson, an Englishman who plays on the European Tour, may have come closer to the line at the BMW Masters last month when he tapped down a spike mark on his line off putt after marking his ball. This was a clear violation of Rule 16-1a. The violation did not come to light until a television viewer called in after Dyson had signed his
times, irrespective of how competitive they may be. This is the spirit of the game of golf.” The spirit of the game has been strained in recent weeks as insinuations have been made that professional golfers on the PGA and European Tours might have crossed the blurry line between rules infractions and cheating. Last month, Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee wrote a column in Golf.com in which he gave Tiger Woods an “F” for his performance in 2013 (in which he won five events and received Player of the Year honors) due to a series of rules violations. Chamblee opined that Woods was “a little cavalier with the rules,” and drew a comparison to his own cheating on a grade school math test. Chamblee was roundly criticized for his remarks, and Woods’ agent implied that legal action might be taken. While Woods did commit several rules infractions last year, until Chamblee’s remarks no commentator had suggested that these were anything more than inadvertent infractions that came to light partly due to Woods’ incessant television scrutiny. Chamblee later apologized on Twitter, although Woods was not satisfied and suggested that the Golf Channel take further action.
score card, and he was disqualified. (As noted in last month’s column, the PGA Tour is considering restrictions on the reporting of rules violations by television viewers.) Things only got worse for Dyson. Some members of the European Tour’s players committee found his action so egregious that he now faces possible sanctions. If a three-person panel determines that he committed a serious breach of the rules, he could face a 3-month suspension. According to a report in Golf Week, there is some inclination to sanction Dyson because he was involved in a serious rules breach several years ago involving his improvement of his stance. Dyson claims that he has no memory of tapping down the spike mark and had no intention to violate the rules. 2013 brought many golf rules controversies, and there are continuing calls to modify some of the more problematic rules. However, despite Chamblee’s unfortunate remarks and the Dyson inquiry, it seems clear that virtually all golfers strive to adhere to the spirit of the game and observe the rules. It’s one of the things that make golf unique.

Sampson’s Spotlight - presented by GolfTrainingAids.com Dead Zero Putting Disk: Sometimes in Golf It Is the Small Things That Make All the Difference by Greg Sampson
The Claim: The Dead Zero Putting Disk is designed to improve any golfer’s focus and confidence by practicing with a target that is smaller than the actual target to improve your putting. The DZPD can be used on any surface, in any location and at any time to produce instant visual feedback. It is very simple. If the ball strikes the disk it is in the hole. The Test: I practiced with the Putting Disk on my backyard green, downstairs in my basement and during a nice fall round at a local track. I practiced various lengths and breaks both putting and chipping. On the course I placed the aid on the green as if I were preparing for a tournament in a practice round where I thought pins would be. I practiced putts all around the hole and chipped from the spots near where the ideal miss would be. I also practiced
the dreadful “tap in” over and over that we all miss at least a few times every season. The Verdict: Practicing to a small object that you can see hit the target definitely improves you confidence more than putting to mini hole that some courses have on their practice greens, as those little holes tend to lip out too many putts. I really found it useful as a tournament confidence builder as well because you receive positive visual results from making putts in spots on the green where future tournament strokes will need to be made. The DZPD prepares you to leave the ball on the green where you have the confidence you will make the putt under pressure or have an easy up and down if the green is missed. I confirm to all golfers out there that the Dead Zero Putting Disk may be small but is sure to do big things for your golf game.

What’s News Jesse Menachem Becomes the 7th Executive Director in the MGA’s 110-Year History Following a two-month search, the MGA has named Jesse Menachem as its new executive director. Menachem, who previously served as the association’s director of rules & competitions, becomes just the seventh executive director to hold that post in the MGA’s 110-year history. “There is no question that Jesse possesses the skills and passion to continue on what has been a history of strong leadership at the MGA,” said Clarence Bennett, the MGA’s president who served on the search committee. “We reviewed many applications, but we are confident that we found the best and right fit for this organization.” Menachem takes over for Joe Sprague, who stepped down earlier this summer in order to join the USGA’s Regional Affairs Department. In addition to Sprague – who held that post for nearly six years – Menachem joins an impressive list of former MGA executive directors in Fred Corcoran (1927-36), John Corcoran (1937-45), Bill Corcoran (1946-69), Dick Haskell (1969-1998) and Tom Landry (1998-2007).

Gorman vs. Geary by Tom Gorman and Tim Geary
What is on your top-10 golf bucket list? by Tom Gorman
For the uninitiated, particularly those of us on the back nine of unspectacular golfing careers, the term “bucket list” is a wish-list of things to accomplish before we kick the bucket. When my obituary is written I prefer the mortician refer to my golf addiction as a healthy golf obsession. It sounds less crass but means the same thing. In truth, all golfers have a basic Bucket List that includes making a hole-in-one, breaking 80, play Pebble Beach, Augusta National, and St. Andrews and attending a major. Less motivated golf wish lists like Tim Geary’s include waiting for the invention of a super-extender ball retriever, making two birdies in a row and breaking 100! Before hanging up your Foot Joys for good, there is a great sense of accomplishment when you can check off an item on your list. Through the years I was fortunate to check off a few items on my golf Bucket List such as playing golf in Hawaii; playing Pebble Beach, attending a Ryder Cup, several majors, caddied on the LPGA Tour and interviewed the game’s greatest players. Before hitting those lush fairways in the sky here is my Ultimate Golf Bucket List. No. 10 is playing a round at Augusta National, an obligatory entry on everyone’s list, and probably, the most unlikely to be ticked off. Without fail, the second weekend in April I spend quality time in front of the TV, watching the start of the real golf season. The incredible contours of the land, the outrageous slopes on the greens and fairways in better condition than my living room carpet all serve to remind me how far removed I am from that experience, and s something I want to try. No. 9 is attending the Masters as a “patron.” Like the Red Sox of the 70s, 80s and 90s I keep saying “next year.” A few years ago I was so intent on watching the Masters in high definition, big screen TV that I went out to BJ’s warehouse to lay out $600 to purchase a brand new SONY to enjoy coverage of the tournament. No. 8 is simple and still a good two decades away – shooting my age. And that does not mean on an executive par-3 course. When I’m 75 I would love to shoot a 75! No. 7 is writing a golf book. This has been a goal for 12 years. I want to write a book called “Living the Dream
- Turning 50 and Making Millions Playing Golf!” I want to profile 10 senior PGA Tour players who are actually living the dream at age 50. No. 6 is to trade places for one day with PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem. I would start the day at PGA Tour headquarters at TPC Sawgrass before heading out for a quick 18 at Sawgrass. First, I would check on the daily bank balance of the PGA Tour bank account confirming a balance of over $10 billion. Yes that’s “B” for billion! I would then take the PGA Tour Lear jet over to Jacksonville for a quick 18 at World Golf Village. I would immediately remove the ban on long putters. What an experience that would be as Commissioner for a day! No. 5 involves an intensive one week personalized golf lesson on the short game with Guru Dave Peltz, who at last count has authored five outstanding golf instruction books. Since the books haven’t helped my chipping and putting Dave Peltz in-person will make me a better player. No. 4 involves playing a $500 Nassau with Donald Trump! He claims to be a six handicapper, but I’ve seen him play and he’s no six. Trump is the prototypical reverse sandbagger. He can’t break 80. If I win the front, back and total and two presses it “could be” a nice $2,500 pay day! Let’s stress “could be” since we’re playing straight up, no strokes! No. 3 on my list is playing Pine Valley in New Jersey. I have read and heard about this place for so long by so many credible sources that it must be special. No. 2 on my list is to caddy for a PGA Tour pro for four days in an official tournament. With ten years of caddy experience from Thorny Lea GC (Brockton) in the 70s I can deliver a flawless loop. No. 1 Numero Uno on my Ultimate Golf Bucket List is playing golf at St. Andrews, Scotland. The great golf writer Herbert Warren Wind once told me “You’ll never be a great golf writer until you go to St. Andrew’s and experience the roots of the game. The Cradle of Golf is No. 1 on my bucket list. Tom Gorman, a golf writer since 1992, has written many fairly forgettable columns that have found their way to the trash bucket.
