The Perfect Life
Tom Watsons Secret To Golf
Often in life I have heard the expression of someone being a natural. That is to say they were born with a talent to do something that others just did not have. While I guess this may be true with many things in life, I am sure it is not true in golf. A few weeks ago during a PGA Tour broadcast, I heard Johnny Miller say,” Jordan Spieth is a natural at the game of golf .“ While I do believe many people are natural born athletes, I am certain that there never has or ever will be a natural born golfer. Golf is a game that is and always will be different for each person that plays the game. The simple fact that no two human beings are exactly the same constitutes that no two golf swings could ever be identical. So this takes us back to the question that we all are searching for answers to, what is the secret to golf. At the Ouimet Banquet in Boston I had a great interview with Tom Watson who was the 2009 Honoree by The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund. Tom Watson had accomplished just about everything one could dream of in a career in golf. He told me stories of growing up in Kansas City where his dad introduced him to golf at the young age of 6. I asked him his thoughts on golf today and the endless search for the secret to the game. He said to me, “ the secret to golf is quite simply the same as love, just fall for it, forget all and forgive all and it will endure. Endless hours of practice will never replace a day playing the game. I asked him what’s next for his career, he said,” I wish I could play one more time in a major in the final group and have a chance to win”. A few months later he nearly won the British Open loosing in a playoff just before his 60th birthday. After seeing Tom the following year at The PGA Show I congratulated him, He said,” But I Lost” , “ I said, no Tom you won and got just what you wished for, I guess you should have wished for the win! We both had a great laugh!

The Perfect Life
The Southern Swing by Katharine Dyson
Golf Travel Season Reviews
The Mason-Dixon Line is not only an 18th century boundary dividing the northern states from the southern states, it also serves a cultural line of demarcation roughly defining the change from cold weather climate to warm. In the fall and winter, anyone looking for a game of golf will likely head south of the Mason-Dixon line to Maryland and Virginia all the way down to Florida. We suggest you take time to play some golf along the way. Here are some places to consider. MARYLAND
Ocean City on the northernmost coast of Maryland, is an ideal playground for anyone who loves the sea, beach and a big oceanfront experience — big hotels, big nightclubs, big amusements, major fishing. And golf. With There are 17 championship courses in the Ocean City area designed by famed architects like Jack Nicklaus, Arthur Hills, Gary Player, P.B. Dye, Dr. Michael Hurdzan and others. You could easily spend days here trying them all out. Favorite plays include Eagle’s Landing, a municipal track certified as an Audubon Sanctuary with stunning views of Sinepuxent Bay and Assateague National Seashore; the Links at Lighthouse Sound in Bishopville designed by Arthur Hills overlooking the Bay and
Ocean City skyline; the two Bay Club courses in Berlin, Ocean Pines by RT Jones Sr. and The Newport Bay and Seaside courses at the Ocean City Golf Club.

You also get a $50 Ruth Chris Card per Foursome. • Perfect for two foursomes, a five-bedroom house with a grill and pool table is part of the “Ultimate 19th Hole” with three nights lodging, three rounds of golf (Bear Trap Dunes Club, Bayside Golf Course and Heritage Shores Golf Club) and use of a cart for $159 per person, per day. what you get. Brushing up against Busch Gardens, with three excellent golf courses and one neat nine Kingsmill Resort & Spa in Williamsburg, is a perfect choice for those who want to come here with family or friends and play golf guilt-free. There are just so many other things to do here to keep everyone happy from historical attractions to whooshing around bends on the roller coaster next door.
VIRGINIA
Horses running behind white board fences along with rolling hills, wineries, historical sites and fine estates are what you find when you hit Virginia. Here Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary recalling when the Gold Course, designed by Robert Trent Jones opened in 1963. Whereas Gold is more a target layout, Green designed by Rees Jones is more forgiving with mounding nudging off-course hits into the fairways. Spotswood, a nine-hole executive course dating from 1947, is a fun play for the entire family. A treasure trove of American history, Colonial Williamsburg is ideal for those who want to play golf and learn more about our heritage. At The Club ar Viniterra near Richmond the New Kent Winery vies for attention with a challenging Rees Jones-designed golf course climbing over hill and dale. There are no tricked up holes here. What you see is
Set on 600 acres just east of Charlottesville, Keswick Hall at Monticello and the adjacent Keswick Club rate high on the romance scale with elegant rooms and candlelight dining. Spreading out below is the rolling parkland-style golf course designed 70 years ago Bethel Inn by Scottish immigrant Fred Finley. Redesigned in 1992 by Arnold Palmer, the Keswick course is a good combo of classic and modern golf course architecture. Keswick.com With 11,000 acres of valleys and mountains Win-

tergreen Resort in the Blue Ridge Mountains is a fourseason playground for skiers, hikers, golfers and those who simply love to get close to nature. Families love it. Play Stoney Creek’s three nines in the Rockfish Valley then drive to the top of the mountain to play Devil’s Knob where you’ll typically find it decidedly cooler. In the winter you can play Stoney Creek in the morning then ski in the afternoon. Stoney Creek is a Rees Jone design while Devil’s Knob is a spectacular Ellis Maples-designed track with plunging elevations and incredible views stretching out to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stay in the Lodge or in houses or condos.
Charleston, Kiawah Island and Hilton Head, you hit pay dirt with numerous courses stretching from coastal beaches and low-country marshes to mountains. The narrow barrier islands just off the coast that make up the Outer Banks harbor several fine tracks, many like Nags Head Golf Links with spectacular views of the sea. A lively scene in the summer, the pace slacks off in the cooler months making the courses much more accessible.

Good Looks on the Course by Elle Brec
GolfHER
Once you try on the GolfHER Little Black Dress, there is no going back to your old golf fashion. The LBD is a closet staple and ladies can now wear their favorite item on the golf course thanks to our friend Sarah, owner and designer of GolfHER. The nylon fabric is extremely comfortable with wicking, SPF protection, and just enough stretch to accentuate curves without being clingy. The attention to detail of the cute patterned trim around the arms allows for ultimate freedom to swing, and the same functional trim around the legs keeps the included skirt shorts in place. The
shorts also hide balls with a perfectly designed ball pocket and the dress lays over them nicely so they don’t stick out! With functional deep pockets in the dress, there is plenty of room for tees, scorecards, and ball markers. The LBD is perfect for no matter the season and looks stylish on the 19th hole too! Pop the collar to show off the pops of color, and for cooler days, pair with zipper jackets that keep arms unrestricted. GolfHER apparel will keep your game on course while lowering your fashion handicap! Fairway Flowers fed plenty of birdies this summer transitioning nicely to autumn with bold,

vibrant colors of plum, ginger, paprika, and turquoise. The flower pattern is also great for travelling this winter then, of course, perfect for next year’s spring flowers. IJP Design
Ian James Poulter’s style is unmatched by any golfer, coordinating pieces in the IJP Design collections to create timeless outfits. The Tartan straight leg pant fits brilliantly, portraying the difficult balance of athleticism and a classy tailored look. Fitted with double waistband fastening for comfort finishes the kitted out look with the eye catching IJP Design belts. The pants have a dirt and water defense system that would rival Scotland Yard as they have been treated with Scotch Guard as any garment from the British Isles should. The surprising easy maintenance for the luxurious Extra Fine Marino Wool, usually a fabric that needs to be dry-cleaned, making it best material to play autumn golf in. Poulter’s Black Watch Tartan is registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority making it more than just a drab plaid with subtle hues of navy blue and red against a gray black backdrop. Pairing

the Raglan Jet Black Polo with the Black Watch Tartan pants pays respect to the early golfers and the amazing way they graced the links. Soft polo fabrics limit long shanks, as there is no tug at the waistline during the backswing or equally important follow through to hit straight down the fairway. Any golfer with a heart brave enough to rock the IJP Tech trouser in Pillar Box Redmart look will undoubtedly garner seconds glances thanks to the modern fit and striking Fall color. Keeping you on par with current trends, as a more fitted look is driving style on the streets and the links. The only thing standing between you and a night out is a pair of dress shoes. Offering many functional elements, like COOLMAX® UPF 40+, they are a slight bit tight when reading the greens. We especially love the Quintessentially British signature crest on their polos like the Tech Golo Golf Ball White. Abacus outerwear is warm and waterproof, as Canadians are very familiar with unpleasant weather. We love the matte look of the garments, a change from normal rain gear. One Of New England’s Own Wins 18th EWGA Championship Title Palm Beach Gardens, FL - On September 7th and 8th, the 18th Annual EWGA Championship Finals- one of the largest amateur golf competitions in the world- was hosted at the Wigwam Resort and Spa in Litchfield, Arizona. One of New England’s own, Julie McKenna from Springfield, Mass. defeated a field of thirty-two women in the Championship Flight to claim the title as the Overall Champion of the 2013 EWGA Championship Finals. Despite the inclement weather, McKenna posted a Final Gross Score of 146, 4 strokes better than her nearest competitor, to capture the victory. The former Wake Forest University and Western New England College School of Law alumna was ecstatic about her win. “I am sure I will be running on adrenaline for the next week or so,” said McKenna. McKenna, an attorney, is currently working at Egan, Flanagan, & Cohen P.C. located in the Greater Springfield, Massachusetts’ area. “When I started working at the law firm, I considered joining a private country club because golf has opened many doors for me in my business career. I decided to join the EWGA instead because it provided me with a great support system and the opportunity to meet and network with so many other successful businesswomen. Based on the
contacts I’ve made and the experiences I’ve had so far, I know I have made the right choice.” The 36-hole EWGA Championship Final consisted of 220 women amateur golfers who advanced beyond 117 local chapter qualifiers and 15 semi-final regional tournaments to advance to the Finals. The final field represented 81 EWGA chapters in 39 states as well as Canada. Competitors play in flights based on skill level determined by their USGA Handicap Index and the competition consists of two different formats: individual stroke play and team scramble. The championship’s format encourages women of all skill levels to compete, underscoring the EWGA’s mantra to enhance the careers and lives of working women through golf. More than 2,500 women nationwide entered the Championship Finals this year, which began in June.

Couple of Travelers
by Alice and Danny Scott
Panama City Beach
No Passport Required
White sandy beaches and turquoise water beckon golfers to Panama City Beach, Florida – no passport required. The sand stretches for 27 miles along the gulf with Shell Island voted top beach in the Continental United States. Locals zip over by boat, pulling up to an isolated spot with coolers and chairs. Guests at The Wyndham Bay Point Resort need only walk the pier and board the Liberty shuttle for a 20-minute complimentary cruise to get there. Some people like to simply boat back and forth across St Andrew Bay but if you go, do disembark and trek across the island’s boardwalk to wriggle toes in the white powdery granules, swim and watch the spear fishermen. The crazy thing is how it seems almost deserted, adding to the tranquility that contrasts with the thrills in the area, like golf.
With a bay name like St. Andrew, great golf is expected and delivered. The Wyndham Bay Point Resort features two 18-hole courses, the Nicklaus Course and the Meadows Course. The Nicklaus Course was previously referred to as The Dragon for its difficulty. Redesigns leveled the playing field but challenges were not eliminated as noted on number five, a par 4 with a fairway split by a wide salt-water marsh. While herons and egrets are nonchalant, golfers must be astute. Nearby, the Hombre Golf Club offers 27 championship holes, cleverly named “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.” Holiday Golf Club, with a lighted driving range, and Signal Hill, Panama City Beach’s first course round out the collection in one of “America’s Top Three Golf Towns” as claimed by Golf Digest.

Besides golf, the gulf offers every aquatic sport like sailing, windsurfing, leisure boating, parasailing and Jet Skiing. Avid or beginning snorkelers are delighted by the bright hues of tropical fish. The warm water yields barracuda, horseshoe crabs, puffer fish and sand dollars. Divers find their mecca with natural and artificial reefs and exploration of history, as this is the “Wreck Diving Capital of the South.” The USS Strength, a World War II Minesweeper, originally sunk for Navy diver training, is now a public dive site steaming with marine life. Watch or catch, as fishing is a premium sport from the shore, pier, skiff or yacht. Popular fish species include cobia, mackerel, red snapper, flounder, red fish, grouper, black fin tuna, and wahoo. Landlubbers enjoy the Pier Park shopping mall and family attractions on 100 acres in central Panama City Beach. Wonder Works, Miracle Strip @ Pier Park, Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium, Gulf World Marine Park, Shipwreck Island Waterpark, Coconut Creek Family Fun Park, Zoo World Zoological and Botanical Park, and Museum of Man in the Sea amuse the easily bored. An Imax theater and eateries complete
the park. Restaurants like the Back Porch Seafood & Oyster House are why Panama City Beach is coined as the Seafood Capital of the South. At The Bay Point Wyndham Kingfish Restaurant and Sushi Bar the chef is popular for her creations, delivering a sliver of eel for consideration on the next order. Wine and dine on the Grand Lagoon Deck or Palms Court Terrace or stroll down to the pier to Lime’s Bar and Grill over the water, where drinks and fish tacos are most affordable. Buddies toast and boast about their rounds. Couples swoon and conference attendees kibitz. While there, the Heart of Florida contest was held. Little Miss Sunshine meets Honey Boo Boo and all the adults that sponsor them. Walk on the dock for a pelican briefing. Every society has its pecking order. Here the pelican chases off the seagull but is trumped by the heron when it usurps the perch. Fish are jumping; birds are diving and waders fish as the sunsets illuminate skyscrapers on the distant horizon. Given the highest concentration of bottlenose dolphins, daily sighting is almost assured on the gulf, often right off the piers. The Wyndham Bay Point Resort is ideally situated. Choose which pool or beach for lounging when not golfing, or check in to the Serenity Spa by day. By night, catch a live music venue or fantasize a life on the water with a romantic walk around the moonlit marina, selecting one of the million dollar yachts docked. Travel is easy with the opening of Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport and non-stop flights on Southwest and Delta airlines. For a bayside golf resort with Caribbean tones and no passport required, go to www.visitpanamacitybeach.com.

Away Game…
Atlantic City
Golf
In 1978 when NJ voters gave the green light for casinos to open in Atlantic City the hope in resurrecting a faded and blighted community was promising. However, when casinos opened their doors the day-to-day vision was a narrow one -- cementing customers to their seats with little outside diversions. Given AC’s prime location in the densely populated northeast corridor and the dearth of legal gambling options 35 years ago -- the total reliance on “day-trippers” was an easy reality and quick revenue producer. Only Las Vegas operated legally in the USA as the other gambling option of note. The gaming market has since exploded and given the new reality overall revenues for AC casinos have been steadily declining. AC’s 2013 vision is now built on creating a “destination dimension” with a myriad of worthy options. Building that awareness has come through a major advertising blitz – aimed at the up and coming millennium generation.
Getting people to give Atlantic City a fresh new look is the primary emphasis for the joint efforts being brought to bear from all of the casinos. The stakes are quite high – unless there is an infusion of new people and increased revenue the future of gaming – even Atlantic City itself – will be in question. Golf has also been part of the Atlantic City landscape for quite some time. In fact, the term “birdie” was first coined at Atlantic City Country Club (ACCC) in Northfield at the turn of the 20th century. The LPGA Tour also annually visits with the ShopRite Classic in the spring. It took some time to realize the critical golf connection -- but the effort is now in full swing. Playing catch-up in a fiercely competitive travel / tourism market is no easy thing but there’s now a concerted focus on expanding the reasons why AC is worth visiting.
A quick snapshot... 19 total courses in the greater AC area 6 rated in the top ten public in NJ by Golfweek. Among the top tier layouts: ACCC, Twisted Dune, Vineyard at Renault and Seaview / Bay. • Average daily high temperature in October = 65 to 70 degrees • Average daily ocean temperature in October = 60 to 65 degrees • Flights to Atlantic City - Only Spirit Airlines services the greater AC area.

NEGM Fall Subscribers Series Trip By NEGM Staff
Tobacco Road - North Carolina The real Tobacco Road is impossible to find on a map, although there are a number of Tobacco Roads scattered across the landscape of North Carolina. In golf, Tobacco Road represents some of the finest golf courses in the world built from acres of old tobacco plantations and estates that were just about everywhere in the mid south region of North Carolina. If you are and avid golfer and you have never played in the Sandhills region, than it for sure needs to be on your bucket list of places to play. The Tobacco Road Golf Club was opened in1998 and designed by Atlanta golf architect, Mike Strantz. When opened, the course was described by numerous golf writers as being one of the toughest tests in the south rated 73.2 with a slope of 150 from the ripper tees. There are few courses anywhere in the world
that are only 6500 yards long with a slope rating this high. As with many unforgettable golf courses, Tobacco Road will entertain you and definitely test your golf imagination continually. Besides being one of the finest golf courses in this region, Tobacco Road also runs a golf travel business as well and serves as the host to golfers from all over the world. NEGM recently held their Fall Subscribers Series Trip at Tobacco Road and took16 golfers for a 3-day trip to the region. Our group played, Tobacco Road 18-holes at Tobacco Road on Friday, which proved to be more like an amusement ride than a round of golf. Just the same 42 birdies by 16 players in one round was kind of epic to say the least as the greens were holding which is not normally the case. On Saturday the group played 36 holes at Seven Lakes Country

Club, which is one of the best-conditioned courses in the region. We finished up the trip on Sunday to the Dormie Club just a bit southwest of Pinehurst. This Ben Crenshaw masterpiece carved into steep sand hills and tall pines turned out to be the hidden masterpiece of the weekend. Its dramatic vistas and natural design was a great play. Accommodations for our group were at the Comfort Inn& Suites in Pinehurst, NC, which was right next to Hickory Tavern, one of the best sports bars in the Carolina’s. In addition Staus4 provided the ul-
timate in live scoring for our event with live scoring, leader boards and net/gross totals throughout the 3-day tournament. Status4 also updated handicaps for each individual course. All of this was live on mynegm. com/subscriber-trip-tobacco. You could say it was the toping on the cake for a perfect golf getaway. Celebrity Golfer: Alex Miceli by Leigh MacKay
With a stylish Magnum-like mustache and an affinity for colorful bow ties, Alex Miceli is an easily recognized analyst on the Golf Channel. With his incisive commentaries and quick wit, both on the air and for “Golfweek” as a Senior Writer, Alex Miceli easily captures the attention of both audiences. Sometimes a controversial figure because of what has been called his “combative approach during interviews,” Alex revels in his “notoriety” and enjoys revealing stories that no one else knew existed. He is not so notorious, however, that professional golfers shy away from him. In fact, the players will go to Alex when they have something to say, and some, the most recent being Bubba Watson, enjoy spoofing Alex when they can. A native of Chicago and a graduate of both Southern Illinois with a BA and the University of Baltimore Law School with a JD, Alex Miceli landed several unusual jobs before he became an entrepreneur in the golf information industry and then found his niche with that “combative approach.” He maintains an 8.3 GHIN Index and plays whenever he gets the chance. Alex lives in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife Roberta Schlicher and their two daughters, Kate, 22, and Alexandra, 19. Alex and I got together for this interview at the Deutsche Bank Championship. I tried not to be combative. NEGM: What do you remember most about your growing up in Chicago?
AM: I remember living and dying with the Cubs. I can still name the starting infield with Ernie Banks at first, Glenn Beckert at second, Don Kessinger at short, Ron Santo at third, Randy Hundley catching, and Fergie Jenkins on the mound. NEGM: Yes, Cub fans have outlasted the Red Sox fans for that elusive World Series win. Do you still have hope? AM: It’s actually criminal that we haven’t won a World Series! I’m 55 now and very concerned. I still have lots of faith, and I still hang a huge Cubs flag at home. NEGM: You have a law degree. Have you put it to good use? AM: No, I have never practiced law. I was a Perry Mason kid and at one time wanted to get into a courtroom, I guess, because of my desire to be argumentative. Never happened. NEGM: Before the Golf Channel and Golfweek, what other jobs did you have? AM: I worked first for the Department of Commerce on regulatory issues. Reuters then hired me, not as a journalist, but for management, to be in charge of regulatory control for all of North America and eventually all of the Western Hemisphere. I was 31 in 1987, and it was a great job, but then I returned to the Department of Commerce as a liaison between commerce and defense on national security issues. Then I became managing director and consulted with government divisions, large corporations, and law firms on important regulatory issues.
32 | Subscribe at myNEGM.com | October / November 2013
NEGM: Then you finally got into the golf business with Golf.com? AM: Yes, but I actually started with a small golf information company called Mashee Niblick in 1993 before the internet. This morphed into Golf Data Online which used the proprietary dial-up system of AOL. Around 1995, we tried this new technology called the internet and Golf.com was born. Several years later I sold out. NEGM: And started the Golf Press Association? AM: Yes, I had this idea of a way to handle press releases so much better than they were being handled. I started “The Golf Wire” in 1999 and had 12 wires in the golf business. Everything that I do that’s golf related all goes through the company. NEGM: Which tournaments do you most enjoy covering? AM: The Open Championship, Ryder Cup, and Walker Cup. NEGM: What are your current golf reporting duties? AM: For the Golf Channel I have my “On the Range” show Tuesdays and Wednesdays and usually a live shot for Golf Central on Wednesday. For the Majors, I’ll do some actual tournament analysis now and then. For “Golfweek,” I’m a Senior Writer, so I’m working on stuff all the time. NEGM: With whom have you had your best interview? AM: In 2012 with Davis Love III, in Las Vegas [at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals Open] the Tuesday after the Ryder Cup defeat at Medinah. Davis comes up to me and says, ‘You want to talk to me, right?’ Of course, I say, “Sure.” For the next hour, I don’t think I got one question out. I felt as if I should have been collecting $150 for the psychiatry fee, for Davis just went through the mental catharsis he needed to go through. NEGM: How do you determine the content of your commentaries, either on the Golf Channel or with “Golfweek”?
AM: I’m a news guy, always looking for people to tell me stuff no else knows. Those are the kind of moments I look forward to—breaking stories. I rarely go to the interview room or go on the course. I like to talk to the players on the range or after their rounds. And, almost without fail, the pros respect what I do and are receptive to sharing their ideas with me. We talk about many interesting, different things. NEGM: What are your favorite courses? AM: St. Andrews is my favorite. Others are Los Angeles CC, National Golf Links of America, Old McDonald at Bandon Dunes, and Waveland in Des Moines, the oldest [1901] public golf course west of the Mississippi and where I learned to play golf in college. NEGM: Who would be in your Dream Foursome of today? Of any time period? AM: George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jack Nicklaus. Winston Churchill, Bobby Jones, and General Patton. I’d like to talk to each one, and the golf would be secondary. NEGM: Do you have much of a New England connection? AM: Yes, I love New England! I’ve been to New England seven times this year and will be back four more times. I am putting the finishing touches on a house on Chappaquiddick on Martha’s Vineyard that I bought in January. We’ll spend Christmas in the new house. I enjoy playing golf at Charles River, Edgartown GC, Milton Hoosic, Myopia Hunt Club, Sankaty Head, and Vineyard GC. NEGM: Any final words as the interviewee for a change? AM: I’m pretty laid back, so this interview has been fun for me, especially if people want to read about me. I believe I have what is very close to being the best job in the world, and I am probably one of the happiest people out there.

Ouimet Centennial Ceremony held in Brookline, MA
BROOKLINE, MA – The Centennial of Francis Ouimet’s historic upset victory in the 1913 U.S. Open was celebrated today in a special wreath laying ceremony. The ceremony was held at the lifesize statues of Ouimet and his famed caddie, Eddie Lowery, which are located at the Robert T. Lynch Golf Course at Putterham in Brookline, where Ouimet was born and resided when he won the Open. Placing the wreath were Mr. Ouimet’s greatgranddaughter Caitlin Wallerce and Eddie Lowery’s daughter, Cynthia Wilcox. The event was coordinated by the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund.
Joining Mrs. Wallerce and Mrs. Wilcox were a group of current Ouimet Scholarship recipients. “Mr. Ouimet’s victory in the 1913 U.S. Open is considered the most important moment in golf history. He was a 20-year-old amateur who beat Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, the two best professionals in the world, in a playoff at The Country Club. The victory made golf popular and attractive to everyone, and changed the game forever,” said Ouimet Fund President Terry Kennedy. He went on to explain that Ouimet became one of the most honored, accomplished and beloved golfers in history, and was

an original member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. He also stated that the Ouimet scholars and Boston students are the modern legacy of “Francis & Eddie” 100 years later – kids that need help to succeed in today’s world. The Ouimet and Lowery statues were sculpted by Bob Pack and dedicated at Putterham in 2000. Mr. Pack’s original Ouimet-Lowery statue is at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, FL.
The Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 and, since that time, has awarded over $26 Million in need-based college tuition assistance scholarships to more than 5,100 students who have worked at least two years as caddies or in pro shop or course superintendent operations in Massachusetts. In 2013-2014 The Fund will award at least $1.5 Million to approximately 300 students. The Ouimet Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization.

SimulateYour Game
by Tim Branco
“
In the last 10 years technology has made it much easier to understand everything about the golf swing
“
When I first started playing golf the idea of simulating your game meant standing in front of a mirror practicing my golf swing. The refection would give me a look at my swing and a matt with a sprinkling of baby powder would show me my swing path and impact angle of the club. While the process was simple and somewhat effective, after 1 hour just about everything in the room was coated in baby powder including me. In the last 10 years technology has made it much easier to understand everything about the golf swing. Not only can we have complete feedback on the mechanics of the swing but also distance, spin rate, ball flight and launch angles. We can visualize exactly what is going on and even retain the data to measure stages of improvement and overall results. Golf simulators have exploded in the marketplace with installations in golf clubs, health clubs, training facilities and indoor golf centers that have multiple units for golfers to play in any weather in any season worldwide. Indoor golf has truly arrived and is becoming one of the fastest growing sectors in the golf industry today. If all the forces in the universe seem to be keeping you from your favorite sport, the virtual world can step up and take its place. This is where a golf simulator comes in -- a computerized game of golf, in your golf club or at your favorite café or health club, designed to mimic the real game while also improving your skills. It takes about 4-5 hours to play a round of golf today and quite frankly time is the number one deterrent in growing the game of golf. You can play 18 holes on almost any course in
mynegm.com/indoorgolf for events and specials
the world today in just 1 hour in any weather for a small fraction of what it would cost to travel there by teeing it up indoors. Granted it is not the same but technology has become so advanced that indoor golf is truly here to stay and it is amazingly realistic. Five years ago finding a convenient indoor golf facility would have been difficult to say the least. Today, there are simulators in a number of public and private golf courses and teaching facilities and health clubs throughout New England. In addition golf simulator businesses are one of golf’s fastest growing sectors as they are sprouting up just about everywhere in the region. Many facilities have 2-6 simulators, full restaurants, bar service and have virtual clubs where you can play courses from around the world and compete in leagues or tournaments as well. A foursome can play 18 holes at any chosen course in just over 2 hours and for as little as $25.00 an hour. Today’s most advanced simulators put you in a true 3-D environment, as though you’ve been transported physically into an ultra-high-def video game. Stereoscopic cameras are trained on the hitting zone, where they record club speed, ball speed, launch angle and all components of spin. The flight of the ball, projected into the virtual course in the time it takes the ball to hit the screen, replicates the shot that would result in the outside world with remarkable precision. So its simple play golf anywhere, anytime, on any course, in any weather indoors. You can have your cake, and eat it too!

ATKINSON RESORT & COUNTRY CLUB By Elle Brec

A Year Round Golfing Experience for All
ust 35 miles from Boston is the beautiful 420-acre grounds of the Atkinson Resort and Country Club. Perched high on top of a hill the challenging, yet fun, driving range provides a picturesque view of the sloping landscape and one of New Hampshire’s finest par 72, 18-hole golf courses. Open year-round, the state of the art Willowcreek Golf Academy with PGA professionals dedicated to the advancement of golfers of all skill levels and abilities is one of the best indoor/outdoor practice facilities in New England. Golfers can stay warm with 12 heated hitting bays along with 3 indoor studios equipped with V1 Golf software that analyzes the swing from four different angles and enables the video file to be loaded to a smartphone to continue the learning process. As if that isn’t enough, there are four aboutGolf indoor simulators with over 35 courses from which to choose. We’ll definitely be visiting on winter Sundays on our way home from the mountains. For seasonal athletes who want to press pause on this ideal autumn weather, the condition of the course right now is fantastic as the pristine, wellmanicured fairways and greens are rolling very nicely. Long par 5s allow for plenty of time to soak in the sun, the now multi-colored hazards, magnificent birch trees and unique granite glacial deposits.
We strongly recommend visiting from now until the peak of the fall foliage as the red, orange, and yellow leaves of the maples on the tree-lined entrance have begun their cascade of colors. The view on the approach to the 18th green looks up at the Woodlawn Terrace perfect for nice weather, al fresco dining or enjoying a 19th hole beverage. It also makes for a great cheering galley when an amazing shot is hit close to the pin, ending the round with a boost of confidence to the ego. After working up an appetite, finish where the golf carts circle a renaissance-like fountain in front of the Stagecoach Grill, an elegant bar and dining room, or enjoy Merrill’s Tavern & Game Room’s comfortable atmosphere, the best place around to watch a sporting event on one of the 9 large screens, play pool, darts or rent a virtual golf simulator. With an impressive four weddings on the last Saturday in September, the Atkinson Resort & Country Club expert planning services still maintains their sterling reputation for guest service and attention to detail, delivering an exceptional experience. Recharge the batteries for the next day on the 9-hole par 3 course in the roomy Fieldstone Suites, aligned with the five-star quality of the affordable resort. www.atkinsonresort.com

The next big thing: An amazing new way to experience the game of golf with your mobile phone and a web page
Aquimo Pin High is quick and easy. No stress of whiffing the ball off the first tee with the whole clubhouse watching. You get to whiff in the privacy of your home or office. No cost to play, minimal cost to upgrade. Coming to an iPhone near you in November and Android in December 2013 at www.aquimo.com/NEgolf. What if you could have a free high-definition golf simulator in your home or office? Aquimo Pin High is a new revolutionary golf simulation game App. But Aquimo is not just another App – you actually swing the phone and can see the ball fly on the phone and in high-definition on any web page, which is easily projected on a TV, for example. Everyone who sees Aquimo Pin High wants to play this game. The graphics are spectacular, you don’t need a $500 game console, and its quick and convenient to play – the Pin High game takes about 15 minutes to play 9 holes. Their product puts the equivalent of a $30,000 golf simulator in the hands of anyone who has a mobile phone and a web page. Says Mark Jeffery, Aqui-
mo’s President and CEO, “The graphics and ease of use of Aquimo Pin High are amazing, but why this product is a real game changer is that it enables you to play golf with friends who can be anywhere in the world.” Pin High is for anyone who plays golf or would like to experience the game for the first time. Says Parker Smith, former Senior Instruction Editor of GOLF Magazine, “This app truly gives direct feedback of the golf swing by tracking the hands through the impact zone. It allows a golfer to teach themselves the correct hand motion to produce straight shots, fades and high draws. And it’s addictively fun to play by yourself or with others.” Aquimo’s first product, Pin High, is modeled after Angry Birds, where players have three chances to toss birds and beat the pesky pigs. In Pin High users have three shots to get closest to the pin. Shoot a bogie and unlock the next level. The score card tracks your best score on each hole. Tournament mode enables you to play against others and compete for prizes, where of course, closest to the pin wins.

This is not a traditional golf video game. Aquimo has spent two years perfecting their swing algorithm and has filed five patents. The result is the Aquimo swing algorithm is significantly more accurate than average game controllers on the market. The upside is a very real slice or hook in response to your actual swing. You may think that holding a phone is not the same as holding a real golf club. Says Mike Malaska, Aquimo Director of Sports and 2011 PGA Golf Instructor of the Year, “The phone is perfect for making practice swings. Think of the phone as holding the club head in the palm of your hand. You then get to shape shots exactly as you would in a real golf swing. Making correct swings without the golf club, and with real-time feedback, is actually a better way to learn the game.” Its amazingly simple to setup in three steps: (1) Just download the Aquimo Pin High App, on the Apple US App store in November (2) fire up the App and tap Aqui-
moLINK to create an account. You will get an email and touching the link in the email activates the account. (3) Open a web page and go to play.aquimo.com – log in with your account ID and your phone becomes a remote control for the web page, and you can take swings and play the first game, Aquimo Pin High. Touch the golf club bag to select a club: you get a wedge, and 7 iron for free, and 10 free points to purchase an additional club. Players win points for pars and birdies in the game, and can buy points in the virtual Pro Shop. The first release in November 2013 is a single and multi-player game of nine holes. Expect additional packs of nine holes in December 2013. Aquimo also has a full golf course simulator in the works, which will include putting and chipping. Like our Facebook page, www.aquimo.com/facebook, to get the latest updates on the Aquimo new product release.

The Golf Body — What is
myNEGM.com
Indoor Golf Guide it?
For over 14 years my passion has been to get the concept of the Golf Body out to the golfing public. It’s great that so many players are adding a fitness component to their game. What I’m seeing, though, is that a lot of these workouts aren’t all that focused on improving the way people play. Whether I’m working on Tour with Keegan Bradley or at our Performance Center in Jupiter, FL with players at every level, it’s important to bring precision and purpose into your fitness program that’s exclusively dedicated to golf. Think about what your body must do to swing a golf club correctly — and to be able to continue to swing it correctly for your entire round. The larger muscles of the chest and shoulders have to be strong enough to control your 50 mph takeaway and slingshot it back into a 100 mph downswing — while not being so tight that they limit the depth of either your backswing or follow-through. A typical chest routine at the gym would have you doing a lot of bench presses, which can tighten the muscles and prevent your backswing and follow-through you like. from being as deep as you’d The hips have to be stable enough to hold you in place during your address and takeaway, but strong, fast, and powerful enough to be able to drive through the ball at impact. There are very few traditional gym exercises that focus on hip stability, strength, or explosion. The small muscles that make up the rotator cuff in your shoulder have to be strong and capable of a wide range of motion to make sure that your swing is technically correct. When was the last time you heard of anyone heading off to the gym for a rotator cuff workout? you not focusing on golf-specific training at home or at the gym, the If you’re number on your bathroom scale might start to go down, but the number on your scorecard won’t. My philosophy is that if you want to improve your golf game and lower your score, you’ve got to optimize your Golf Body and take it to the course. For players at all levels around the world, our Golf Body 1 Home Follow-Along Program is helping them do just that. - Coach “Joey D” Diovisalvi

Players Prospective

Indoor Golf favorites 2013
Wintertime in the Northeast, besides the cold and sometimes the need to buy a new snow shovel, keeps even the hardiest golfers indoors. Lost are the joys of a friendly round and by the time spring appears it may feel like we are starting the game all over again. There are of course several ways around this dilemma and some, four months in Florida comes to mind, are most likely impractical but there are a number of solutions to beating winter’s golfing blues. The proper activities while there’s snow on the ground will make you fit and ready for the warmer weather and may actually improve your game. First on our list is not a gadget but software from a Belgian company named Swinguru. It use is simple and intuitive, just load Swinguru on to your PC/Computer, hook up a standard 3D camera and swing. Swinguru software automatically captures your swing, analyzes it and makes it instantly available for replay. This is really a sophisticated approach to helping you help yourself to make a better golf swing. The software shows your swing and identifies the 30 most common mistakes made by amateur golfers by tracking the key areas of head, shoulders, spine, elbows, knees and feet.
This makes the computer analysis dead on and as you improve shows you the results. You will like the videos included that show what your mistakes are and lots of interactive drills designed to fix them since it makes no sense to know what you’re doing wrong if you don’t know how to fix it. There is also a feature that allows you to view side by side comparisons of professionals with the swings synchronized so the key positions are matched. By using visual markers on the pro’s swing that are also shown on your swing, you see at once what things you need to spend time on in order to strike the ball better. However, one of the biggest factors is Swinguru is fun to use and a great to share with friends. So much of golf swing training is not all that pleasant but being interactive and seeing yourself implement the fixes to flaws is an immense incentive…a fun incentive. Pricing for Swinguru depends on the options chosen from just the software with 12 month updates and support to a plug and play package that includes a 3D camera, laptop computer, all the cables needed and two hours of remote installation assistance.

If you should have the chance to spend time at one of those domed driving ranges you might want to take along the Skypro to get an instantaneous visual of your swing. The device snaps on to the club shaft and senses thousands of data points including swing path, club head speed, swing plane and club face rotation which are transmitted to your iPhone. The downloaded software gives a 3-dimensional representation you can view from any angle. It works, is easy to use and sells for $170. A particular favorite of ours, one that’s been around for a long time, is the Orange Whip. The super flexible shaft long shaft (47½″) has a weighted orange
colored ball on the end pushing the total weight up to 1.76 pounds. To use it all you do is swing. The extra weight forces you to swing in balance and on plane with no flipping the wrists. It also teaches how to stop the typical move of slicers, over the top. The Orange Whip may be used indoors and is great for stretching your golf muscles all winter long. The price is $109. Another simple and useful idea for keeping in shape during the prolonged hiatus of winter is the Golf Gym Balance Ball, an inflatable ball for stretching, improving your flexibility and building core strength. Like the Orange Whip it’s not a new product but it too has a loyal following of those who make it a regular part of their workout routine. The Balance Ball comes with a DVD and manual as well as a hand air pump and sells for $25. A choice of sizes is offered, either 55cm or 65cm diameter. A product that just came to our attention and we liked from the start is the ProApproach Net. At just 5 feet by 3 feet it is much smaller than other indoor practice nets but it doesn’t need to be any larger because the design is specifically for practicing chipping. It opens and closes with almost no effort and is made to last with polyester fabric over a steel frame. A nice touch is the way the bottom is shaped so the ball returns to you. Retail price is $79 not including the hitting mat but there are stakes in the box for anchoring the ProApproach if you’re using it outdoors.

The last product we think is an essential over the winter months is the DVD Butch Harmon About Golf. Harmon is one of the top teachers in the game and gained fame as one of the instructors Tiger Woods has employed but he has also worked with Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Seve Ballesteros and many other stars on the PGA Tour. This two DVD set has just over two hours of instruction divided into logical segments from Ball Striking and Fundamentals to specifics for junior, ladies and senior players.
It goes without saying the information he imparts is first rate but what separates Butch Harmon About Golf from other videos is his clear concise presentation and straight forward manner. No tricks, buzzwords or other distractions he imparts his knowledge by simple “hold it like this, and swing it like this,” which is very refreshing. The other important point is Harmon’s way of hitting the ball is applicable to every player and he doesn’t talk down to the less skilled among us. The $79.95 price is well worth it and part of the proceeds goes to the Troops First Foundation.

Two Good Rounds by Elisa Gaudet
Golf “Staycation”- NYC
Living in New York City sometimes makes it difficult to get to the golf course. I decided to go on a quest and explore the golf options in the city that never sleeps. Some of these you may be able to find in your city. First I have been meaning to get fitted for new clubs and this was a great time to go in and take the time to try what is new on the market and actually see and feel the difference. Golfsmith on 5th Avenue in NYC has three hitting bays and staff members that are certified as master club fitters. You can drop by anytime they are open and meet with a fitter or make an appointment in advance. I was able to try hitting with various clubs in the simulator and discover which clubs felt the best and were best for my game. I ended up with Taylor Made Men’s senior clubs because of my height. Something I would not have thought of or known was an option had I not seen someone who can really evaluate my swing and suggest different things. Fifth Ave. between 37th & 38th Street New to NYC is Golf & Body, an amazing state of the art golf gym that offers all the amenities of a high end gym with the feel of a country club. The notable amazing feature is the ability to have the same services as a touring PGA Pro. They have professional staff members that are the best in the business including swing coaches, physical trainers and a therapy department. The unique quality is each department communicates with each other about
each client. So if you have a back ailment the therapy professionals will discuss this with both the trainer and swing coach then allowing each to assist the client as needed. Ben Shear is the head golf fitness professional and has developed a system to evaluate and implement golf-specific fitness. I met with Zeon Dolnyckyj, the head trainer under Ben who took me through a personal assessment and how he and the trainers work with the swing coach and therapy group to create a specific program for each individual. Then Jared Seitters, golf professional, took me through some swing analysis on the HD Golf video in one of the high tech simulators, which produces images that look like a golf sonogram. There are a number of them in the club that members can just use themselves or take lessons with a pro. This allowed me to review my swing and save it in the computer as well enabling any of the training professionals to review it at any time. The very luxurious interior makes you feel as if you are in high end country club. 6th Ave & 32nd St. www.golfbodynyc.com Another option in the heart of Soho is Drive 495. This is golf gym has a hip modern feeling with the warmth of a family. Largely because this golf specific gym was started by two brothers Don & Joe Saladino who really live the golf and fitness regime. Don is certified fitness professional and Joe regularly competes at a high level in National Amateur events and has been named Metropolitans Player of the

Year multiple times. They are very focused on the combination of nutrition, fitness and golf and offer state of the art fitness equipment and golf instruction with well trained professionals in both fields. Broadway between Spring & Broome. www.driveclubs.com The Golf Club at Chelsea Piers is an amazing place to practice you game with 52 heated and weather protected hitting stalls on four levels and an automatic ball tee-up system, no bending required to tee up the ball, all overlooking the Hudson River. One of my favorite times to go is for the Friday Night Swings. This is combination of happy hour on the Hudson with golf. Open wine & beer bar while you mingle and rotate through the stalls as well as receive instruction from their teaching pros. 6:308pm Fridays. Fee of $30. Pier 59 - 18th St. & Hudson River Park. www.chelseapiers.com Randall’s Island is a great option if you want to golf outdoors. This 25-acre facility overlooks the East River
and uptown Manhattan and is easy to get to with a shuttle that runs frequently from 3rd Ave. It has 82 hitting stalls on two levels, grass tees, short game area with bunker, golf lessons with Pros on site, golf clinics, a pro shop, a beer garden and grill and for a bit more fun a 36 hole landscaped miniature golf course. The shuttle van goes up 3rd Avenue and stops at 72nd,77th, 86th & 96th Streets and takes about 20 minutes .Open until 10pm every night, seven days a week. www.randallsislandgolfcenter.com So if you can’t get to the course there are plenty of options for golf in NYC. This list would not be complete without a great 19th hole establishment. St. Andrews Restaurant & Bar is close to the always colorful Times Square however once you enter there is an authentic Scottish experience waiting for you including plenty of golf memorabilia and scotch. West 46th St. between 6th Ave & Broadway.

Molori Unplugged by John Molori
Mike Salk:
The Prodigal Son Returns Sudbury native Mike Salk has jammed a lifetime of sports radio into his 35 years. He worked at Boston’s ESPN 890 from 2005 to 2009, but it was at Seattle’s ESPN710 that Salk soared to that rarified air of sports radio superstar. This past winter, Salk returned to snowy Boston to fill some fairly large galoshes. Sportsradio WEEI hired him to replace the legendary Glenn Ordway alongside Michael Holley on the station’s 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. drive time slot. “It’s been all positive,” says Salk. “The best experience was the Jimmy Fund Telethon. I had a chance to spend time with the family of Sean Collier (the MIT police officer tragically killed in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings). They look like a million people that you know. It was so touching.” As his recent media career has blossomed, so has Salk’s golf game. “I really couldn’t stand golf and never watched it. When I was in Seattle two summers ago, I really got into the game. Golf is an obsession out there.” Early returns on Salk’s golf game were not favorable, but he persevered. “At first, I was terrible. I would go out with friends and would have to give up on a couple of holes because I just couldn’t do it.” Living a life surrounded by golfers and opportunities to play in numerous charity and media day tournaments spurred Salk to improve. “There had to be something to this game, so I took a few lessons,” he relates. “In Seattle, you can play 12 months a year. There is no snow and it never gets too cold. “I played at Chambers Bay where the U.S. Open will be in two years. It was rainy, windy, and miserable, but the day was so beautiful. There are a lot of great and reasonably priced courses out there.” These days, Salk enjoys playing at Manchester (NH) Country Club, Stow Acres, Mohegan Sun, and Newton Commonwealth, but Chambers Bay provided the Cambridge resident with his golf high point. “I actually made par on the 14th hole, so any pro who doesn’t do that will hear it from me,” jokes Salk. “There is a bunker on 18 that is really small, maybe 5 or 6 feet in diameter, but it is so deep, it has stairs. I hit directly into it, and then got out of it.”
Salk is hoping to similarly lift WEEI from its ratings doldrums. He states, “When I started in Seattle, the Sonics had left town. The Seahawks, Cougars, and Huskies were all losing, and the Mariners became the first team ever to have a $100 million payroll and lose 100 games. “Within 3 years, our show was number one. Boston is different. There is nothing like it. The fans are
totally obsessed and passionate.” The same can be said for Salk and his golf game, an ever-evolving passion play. “At first, my goal was to not be the worst player in the world. Then, I wanted to play without embarrassing myself. After that, I was trying to break 100. “Now, I see golf as a fun way to get away from it all for a few hours and have a Bloody Mary or a beer. Still, I get mad when I shank one or don’t hit the ball the way I should. There is nothing like hitting the ball straight in the air. I’m still horrible, but completely obsessed. I basically put myself to sleep visualizing how I would play a certain course.” John Molori is the co-author of “The Cracker Jack Collection: Baseball’s Prized Players.” Email John at molorimedia@aol.com.

Ross’ Rulings Tiger Woods Penalty Demonstrates Hazard Of Moving Loose Impediments by Jack Ross
Tiger Woods might ultimately finish 2013 with Player of the Year honors. But if there was an award for “Most Penalized Player” he’d already have clinched it. Woods was penalized for taking improper relief from an embedded ball at the Abu Dubai Championship, and then became embroiled in an epic rules controversy at the Masters when he was determined to have taken an improper drop on the 15th hole after his ball careened off the flagstick into a water hazard. The third leg of the rules trilogy occurred during the second round of the BMW Championship after his ball came to rest under trees near the first green. Woods moved some loose impediments around his ball, and thought that the ball merely oscillated but did not move from its position. The incident was captured on video by a film crew following Woods. PGA Tour rules officials reviewed the video and determined that the ball did move, which results in a 1-stroke penalty. But because Woods failed to replace the ball to its original position, he was assessed a 2-stroke penalty. Generally, a player incurs a 1-stroke penalty under Rule 18-2 if he causes his ball to move once it is in play. (You are not penalized if you inadvertently knock your ball off the tee before making a stroke because the ball is not yet in play.) There are exceptions to this rule, such as if you cause your ball to move while probing for it in a water hazard, moving
loose impediments on a putting green , or removing a moveable obstruction. It is not necessary that the ball move horizontally to a new position. For example, if you take your stance and your ball sinks a couple of inches deeper into the rough, such vertical movement results in a penalty. You must attempt to replace the ball to its original position. If that is not possible, the ball should be placed at its new position deeper in the grass. (See Decision 20-3d/3.) If your ball moves after you have addressed it (taken your stance), you are deemed to have moved it and incur a penalty. However, an exception added to Rule 18-2b last year provides that you are not penalized if it “is known or virtually certain” that you did not cause the ball to move. This exception typically will apply if a gust of wind causes your ball to move on a putting green. Woods’ penalty once again raises the issue of whether it is equitable for some players to be subject to greater rules scrutiny than other players by virtue of constant television and media attention. Had there been no film crew following Woods, officials would have deferred to his judgment that the ball did not move. Jack Ross completed an intensive PGA/USGA rules workshop and has officiated at state amateur competitions. Rules inquiries may be directed to rossgolf@charter.net.

Sampson’s Spotlight - presented by GolfTrainingAids.com Putting Stroke Teacher by Greg Sampson
The Claim: The Putting Stroke Teacher (PST) is a training aid designed to assist golfers to learn, practice and improve the three fundamentals that all great putters in the game posses. The fundamentals that the PST aids golfers of any ability with are forearm alignment, stroke path and one piece stoke. The PST adjusts to fit any golfer’s physical build, posture and shaft plane angle while providing a realistic feeling to each putting stroke where an error or proper stroke can be felt easily allowing the golfer to improve their skills faster. The Test: I tested the aid indoors and outdoors using my own putter to practice short and long putts. I then had golfers of different abilities and physical builds practice with the PST. We all practiced together hitting the same putts for the same amount of times. We even used the PST to practice
simple bump and run chips with a 7-iron. Did we become our own Stroke Teachers? The Verdict: The Putting Stoke Trainer was very easy for everyone to install on their putter to fit his or her body type and posture at setup. The biggest improvement was in forearm alignment and wrist hinging as the aid automatically sets your forearms level to the slope of the ground and square to the aim line. Also because the PST sets golfers hands in a more upright position, wrist movement decreased. Finally, we all noticed a more fluid stroke for a simple putt or event bump and run as the core muscles of our body and not fast twitch muscles were now moving our arms throughout the stroke. My recommendation is to come out of your pocket to teach yourself a better stroke as we all now the saying drive for show, putt for dough!

Team New England Update Tracking the progress of all our players on all the Tours. By: Steve Riggs This final edition of the Team New England Update of 2013 finds this writer confident many of our players glad this one, (season), is over. TNE had total combined earnings of all our players, at this writing, of over $9 million. The coming weeks will find some players getting much needed rest and family time while others will rest, reflect then get to work on swing/game issues. Finally a few may be heading to Q-School. We congratulate Jim Renner on regaining his PGA Tour Card for the 2013-14 season finishing the top 25 regular season money earners on the Web.Com. While the PGA, Web.Com and LPGA Syemetra Futures tour’s regular and play off seasons are over, there is still golf to play in the LPGA and Champions tours in 2013.
PGA TOUR Keegan Bradley (VT) has made 20 cuts in 24 starts with 2 seconds, 1 third, 7 top 10 and 14 top 25 finishes and earnings of $3,636,813. Making the Presidents Cup Team, Keegan was our only player to go all the way in the post season FedEx Cup Playoffs finishing in 16th place overall. A scoring average of 70.01 has shown steady improvement month to month. I am impressed with how Bradley has accepted the peaks and valleys that are the PGA TOUR. Scott Stallings (MA) has earnings of $1,622,627 making 13 cuts in 27 starts with 1 second, 4 top 10 and 6 top 25 finishes. Scott has shown steady improvement from last year finishing 54th on the money list with a scoring average of 71.04, down significantly from 2012. Stallings is one who quietly goes about his business and gets the job done. 2014 may be his breakout year. J.J. Henry (CT) made 16 cuts in 26 starts with 2 top 10 and 3 top 25 finishes. Earnings of $761,861 have J.J. at 106th on the money list with a scoring average of 71.07, the highest end of season average since 2003. All things considered, J.J. might take a break then get to work on improving his stats. One of our steadiest players I expect Henry to deal with his performance issues and come out strong next year. James Driscoll (MA) end of season stats find him with earnings of $821,101 finishing 101st on the money list. Along the way, James made 15 cuts in 23 starts with 2 top 10 and 5 top 25 finishes and making it to the Barclays post season. Driscoll’s scoring average shows improvement being down a tick to 70.97 at season’s end.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Brad Faxon (RI) has earned $366,594 over 18 events this season including his victory at the Legends of Golf with Jeff Sluman. Brad has 1 top 10 and 4 top 25 finishes with a scoring average that continues to improve, currently sitting at 72.87 at this writing. Brad’s putting stats are also showing progress. Dana Quigley (MA) has been focused on son Devon’s rehabilitation from a Traumatic Brain Injury, (TBI). Devon continues to improve. Dana, competing in 8 events has earnings of $10,950. Dana’s career Champions Tour earnings are $14,847,286. Allen Doyle (RI) 65, has earnings are $17,449 competing in 6 events this season. A Woonsocket, RI native, Doyle has career earnings of $13,400,284.
LPGA TOUR Alison Walshe (MA) has made 13 cuts in 19 starts with earnings to date of $139,777 and a scoring average of 71.633. Alison, our only TNE active competitor on the LPGA TOUR, continues to grind having a respectable 2013 season. Anna Grzebien (RI) remains on the LPGA TOUR roster but has not competed on the LPGA TOUR this year as she devotes her time to her family.
Tim Petrovic (MA) playing on both the PGA and Web.Com tours finished T-9th at the Greenbrier this year. Tim’s combined earnings are $240,183 with a combined year end scoring average of 71.51. In his quest to rejoin the PGA Tour, Q-School is probably next up for Tim. Billy Andrade (RI) tied for 5th at the Sanderson Farms Championship on the PGA Tour in only his second start of the year after being away from competition for some time. His combined PGA and Web.Com tour earnings are $116,085. Turning 50 in January, we know Billy is anxious to join the Champions Tour. Brett Quigley (RI) missed the cut in his solo PGA Tour start, with combined career earnings of $11,453,897, we hope to see Brett in 2014.

LPGA SYMETRA FUTURES TOUR
European PGA TOUR Peter Uihlein (MA) after a brief time on the Challenge Tour, (European Developmental tour), won the Madeira Islands Open - Portugal – BPI in May resulting in his earning full status on the European Tour. A second Dunhill Links Championship , post sudden death playoff vaulted Peter’s earnings to $1,547,820 U.S., placing him in 10th place on the Race to Dubai. Peter’s scoring average sits at 70.18.
WEB.COM TOUR Jim Renner (MA) will be back on PGA Tour being one of the top 25 regular season money earners finishing 17th. Jim’s total earnings were $162,140 as he made 11 cuts in 22 total starts. He has 1 second, 4 top 10 and 6 top 25 finishes with a scoring average of 70.42. We congratulate Jim on regaining his PGA Tour privileges and wish him good luck in the new season. Patrick Sheehan (MA) has earned $34,868 making 8 cuts in 21 starts with 1 top 10 and 3 top 25 finishes. Sheehan’s scoring is up from the last issue sitting at 71.16. Patrick, 43, remains resolute as he continues to compete on the Web.Com Tour.
Natalie Sheary (CT) has made 9 cuts in 14 starts this year earning $12,267 and 1 top 10 being a T-3 at the Guardian Retirement Championship. Her year’s end scoring average is 73.25. Molly Aronsson (VT) made 4 cuts in 12 starts with earnings of $5,052 this year with 1 top 10 finish in the Florida’s Natural Charity Classic. A year’s end scoring average of 73.89 indicates Molly needs work on those stats. Briana Vega (MA) did not have a good year making 2 cuts in 14 starts in 2013. Talented Briana is struggling as her 75.53 scoring average indicates earning $1,868 this year. It is my hope Vega can turn it around. Libby Smith (VT), a Futures veteran steadily competing since 2004 has yet to make a start on this year’s Symetra Tour.
Brad Adamonis (RI) has made 4 cuts in 12 starts this season with 1 top 25 finish. Brad has posted earnings of $13,550 with a scoring average of 70.94 that continues to improve. Brad’s talent and resolve will keep him focused going forward. Rob Oppenheim (MA) has earnings of $23,105 making 5 cuts in 20 starts with 1 top 25 finish. A scoring average of 72.20 shows a little improvement over last month. We hope Rob finds the right combination to bring his talent to the top.

What’s News Frank Vana, Jr. Claims Record Ninth Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship Title; Caps Off Win With a Tournament-Low Score of 5-under par 65
For a record ninth time, Frank Vana, Jr. (Andover CC) can call himself a Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Champion. Under perfect conditions at Marshfield Country Club, the nine-time Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year carded a tournament-low score of 5-under par 65 on Wednesday to post a remarkable six-stroke comeback. He finished with a three-round score of 1-under par 209. It marks his ninth Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship victory and his 14th MGA Championship title. No other golfer in history has equaled those two marks. Over the course of his career he has won nine Massachusetts MidAmateur Championships (1999-2003, 2005-06, 2012-13), two Massachusetts Amateur Championships (2004-05), two Massachusetts Four-Ball Championships (2002-03) and one Massachusetts Father & Son Championship (2003).
Keith Smith Wins 2013 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship In a Three-Hole Playoff; Outlasts Former Champions Jack Kearney and Tom Bergeron Haverhill, MA — What was scheduled to be a 36-hole event turned into a longer affair but that was just fine with Keith Smith (Franklin CC). Following a three-hole sudden-death playoff at Haverhill Country Club on Wednesday, Smith captured the 2013 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship by making par on the 361-yard, par 4 18th hole. It marked his third straight par during the playoff, which had begun nearly 45 minutes earlier.
Holbrook Defies Age to Win MGA Super Senior Division Title” He may be the second oldest competitor in the field, but he finished first on the scoreboard. Seventy-two years young Jim Holbrook (Ferncroft CC) finished with a two-round score of 7-over par 147 to capture the Super Senior Division title. He secured the two-stroke win over John Crook (Cape Cod National GC) thanks to a stellar to a 2-over par 72 round on Wednesday. After making the turn at 4-over par 39, Holbrook carded birdie on three out of four holes on the back nine to secure his divisional victory. He made birdie on the 11th, 13th and 14th holes. His latest piece of hardware will fit nicely next to his two Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship trophies he won in 1996 and 1997.

Maine Retains Tri-State Trophy!
In the 2013 Tri-State Championships between Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, Maine had a one point lead going into the final match between the states’ number one players, Maine’s Ricky Jones, New Hampshire’s Mike Martell and Vermont’s Eric Lajeunesse. Ricky Jones made a nice run at an eagle putt on Martindale’s tricky 18th hole that just missed. But his birdie attempt
settled into the bottom of the cup, giving Jones a one-up victory over Martell. When Lajeunesse of the Country Club of Barre, Vermont, won both his matches, it sealed the victory for Maine. Leading the way for Maine were senior one-man Mark Plummer and Sable Oaks’ Mike O’Brien, playing in the 10th position. The two were the only players to earn all three possible points over the two-day event.
Jones Claims 6th Mid-Amateur Championship Ricky Jones of the Samoset Resort shot 70 for a two day total of one-under 139 to win his 6th Maine MidAmateur Championship. Jones shot a one-under 34 on the front nine to open up a seven shot lead over Ryan Wingard at the turn and never really looked back. In the end he won by six shots over Joe Alvarez, who went 7471—145 for solo second. Rounding out the top five were Ryan Wingard (147), Gary Manoogian (153) and Scott Stone (154). Jones is also a three-time winner of the Maine Amateur Championship (2003, 2004, 2013). Winning the Am tends to bode well for Jones, as he has coincidentally gone on to win the Mid-Amateur every time he has won the state amateur title. The only other player to capture both titles in the same calendar year is Mark Plummer, who accomplished the feat in 1994.
Connecticut’s Shawn McLoughlin Wins Double - Captures 2013 New England Senior Amateur Championship & Super Senior Title Falmouth, ME – Shawn McLoughlin (Ridgewood CC – CT) made event history on Wednesday when he captured the 2013 New England Senior Amateur Championship< with a two-round score of 5-over par 145. Not only did the 70-year-old from Newtown (CT) win the overall title, but he was also handed the Super Senior Division trophy which is reserved for those who are 65 years and older. It marks the second time that he has won the overall title (2000) and the third time he has claimed the Super Senior Division title (2009, 2012). No player has ever claimed as much NEGA hardware.

What’s News Jon Curran wins Player of the Year; Blayne Barber earns Rookie of the Year Myrtle Beach, S.C. – (September 13, 2013) – There were times when Jon Curran thought it was impossible to finish inside the top 10 on the NGA TOUR. This season, however, it was more improbable that the Vanderbilt alumnus finished outside the top 10. In 13 starts on the Pro Series, Curran racked up a Tour-high three wins and finished seventh or better seven times en route to winning the money title and – more importantly – the 2013 NGA TOUR Player of the Year award. “It’s awesome,” Curran said of claiming the prestigious title. “I’m not one to sit around and think about awards, but you’ve got to enjoy something like this. When you hear names like [past NGA Players of the Year and PGA TOUR winners] Chad Campbell, Michael Thompson, Ted Potter Jr. and Zach Johnson, this award is bigger than I realized. I’ve never been among guys like that before and I’m going to enjoy it.” Curran joined the NGA TOUR in 2009 after a stellar collegiate career, he struggled to crack the top 10. The
Hopkinston, Mass., native needed 35 starts on the Pro Series before recording his first top 10. Though Curran is content for the moment, he realizes his main goal to join his former high school teammate and NGA TOUR alum Keegan Bradley on the PGA TOUR is still out there.
Paul Quigley and Kevin Blaser Win Gilholm Cup at NBCC
The team of Paul Quigley and Kevin Blaser combined for a two-round total of 132 strokes on Sunday to capture the $800 first prize as champions of the 2013 Gilholm Cup at Country Club of New Bedford. The teams of Billy McDonald-John Kelly and Steve Tasho-Matt Parziale tied for second place ($525/ team) with matching 133 scores. In Saturday’s first round, Tasho and Parziale shot a 67 to post the low
round of the day, while McDonald and Kelly shot 68. Acushnet brothers Ryan and Kyle Pelletier finished fourth (136 — $350), while Rick Marcos and Don Reycroft took fifth (139 — $250). What’s News U.S. Kids Golf National Players Of The Year Michael Thorbjornsen and Mimi Chen
Michael Thorbjornsen (Wellesley, Mass.) and Mimi Chen (Longwood, Fla.) have been named National Players of the Year, U.S. Kids Golf announced Monday. Thorbjornsen, 12, earned the honor for the second year in a row, while 11-yearold Chen is a first-time National Player of the Year. “The National Player of the Year Award is the highest honor U.S. Kids Golf can present to these great junior golfers,” said Dan Van Horn, President and CEO of U.S. Kids Golf. “In addition to congratulating the players, I’d like to commend the families that support their players and help them compete at all levels, both locally and nationally.”
Michael Thorbjornsen
Thorbjornsen has competed in U.S. Kids Golf tournaments since he was 6 years old, and his record includes 13 Local Tour Player of the Year honors (11 on the Boston tour, two on the Hartford tour). He won the World Championship in 2012 en route to being named the first National Player of the Year, and in 2013 he became just the 10th boy to win back-to-back World Championships in the event’s 14-year history.
Mimi Chen
Chen’s love for golf started with a love for building sand castles in bunkers when she was 5 years old. By age 7, she began practicing more seriously, and at age 8 she shot 43 and finished second in her first event on the Orlando Local Tour.
HOW DO I BECOME THE NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE YEAR?
The U.S. Kids Golf National Player of the Year Awards will be given each year to one boy and one girl. To be eligible, players must earn Player of the Year honors at the Local Tour level. This is done by winning the Local Tour points standings and competing in four or more events within a season from the previous year’s summer season through the current year’s spring season. The National Player of the Year Award winner will be the highest finisher at the World Championship who meets the above criteria. Players must participate in an 18-hole age group and in the event of a tie, the lowest score relative to par at the World Championship will determine the winner.

Gorman vs. Geary by Tom Gorman and Tim Geary
Can Golfers Learn to Play Faster? by Tom Gorman
NO. Tim Geary has chosen life’s ultimate challenge, something even more daunting than climbing Mt. Everest or filling out a perfect NCAA men’s basketball tournament bracket. He thinks golfers can learn to play golf faster, which if it ever happened, would increase enjoyment of the sport by those of us who play ready golf and don’t think too much before taking the next swing. Apparently, Mr. Geary suffers from a chronic condition called ignorance. In a perfect golf world, there would be three-hour rounds and a time limit on amateur players between shots. Plumb-bobbing on greens should be a penalty and plumb-bobbing (yes, some players still do it) from the fairways would be grounds for immediate eviction from the golf course. According to the U.S Golf Association three million golfers quit the game every year, and it’s safe to say slow play is the leading culprit. It takes roughly 90 minutes to walk a course at a leisurely pace at 3 mph. That’s 90 minutes for a pro to think about 35 – 40 swings and a 20-handicapper to think about 50 – 60 swings, putting excluded. So why does it take a three-some of Tour pro’s and foursome of weekend hackers to play five hours? The problem with increasing pace of play and the lack of three-hour rounds is that amateurs copy the pros. The pros need to be better at it. “Slow play is a problem on the PGA Tour, and I think it’s our biggest concern,” Bubba Watson recently told Golf Digest. “We are worried about putters and golf balls and all these things, but I think we should be more concerned about slow play and speeding the game up, not just for the pros but for amateur golfers as well. Nobody wants to play a game that takes five and a half hours to play.” I believe golfers want two things: pace of play and conditions of the green. Think about it. If you play a course with beat up greens or the round takes six hours, you’re miserable, right? Everything else can be bad and
it won’t totally ruin your day, but those two ugly golf experiences can make it much worse. Here are some interesting statistics to consider the next time you play with a 30 handicapper and you watch helplessly as he tosses grass in the air, takes time to laser his distance to the flag, takes three or four practice swings before every shot and does a 360 degree prance around his 30-foot putt. This is the “as seen on TV mentality.” Since the Tiger era the overall pace of play has slowed, and at times Woods’ pace seems blatantly slow, and he is never penalized. He averages 40 seconds for every shot including putts. Consider that Ricky Fowler, the fastest player on Tour averages 15 seconds for each shot, while the Tour field average is 30 seconds, and 37 seconds for putts. Did you know the Tour has a 45- second rule and that the rule is broken 20 percent of the time? Golf needs to be faster, plain and simple. To its credit the USGA has coined a new slogan this year to make slow players more aware of the problem. “While we’re young” seems is having a positive impact on those 20plus handicaps who take time to laser their shot distance, then proceed to miss the target by 30 yards. Playing with hackers for five hours is a hell no one should be subjected to. The five-hour player is the same clown that drives 60 mph in the fast lane and spoils the fun for everyone else. Public courses can do a better job by having rangers that are forceful and by spending more money on maintenance. If the courses spent more money, the rough, fairway and greens would be better manicured to help find balls faster, which in turn will speed up play. Also, better signage would direct players to the next tee more quickly. Slow play is here to stay. Slow play is taught in high schools, colleges and private lessons. When’s the last time you played a round and did not hear the phrase “take your time.” Tom Gorman, on occasion average 42 putts per round, would like to see a rules change limiting a player to a maximum of three putts per green.
