FROM THE EDITOR

OCTOBER / BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and they need your help! While there are heroes all over New England who fight this disease unselfishly and dedicate time and resources to the cause there is still much to be done. The Jimmy Fund Golf program runs over 150 golf tournaments yearly raising millions of dollars annually for The Dana Farber Cancer institute. Golf Fights Cancer was started by Brian Oates and Jay Monahan 2003 after losing a good friend Rob Stevens to cancer that year. This grass route foundation has had a major impact on contributing to both research and treatment throughout New England. Susan G Komen for the cure is one of the most recognized national foundations started in 1982 by Nancy Brinker. In 1991 she established the pink ribbon as the national symbol for the cause. In 2014 0ver 200 events will be held to raise money to fight breast cancer by the Komen Foundation. In Newton Massachusetts The Elle Fund was founded in 1995 by Jeff and Elliot Popkin who lost their Mom Eleanor Popkin in 1987 to breast cancer. The Elle fund now raises over $500,000 annually supporting more than 500 patients across Massachusetts cope with issues and needs. Take a moment and embrace your loved ones, your moms your sisters and others, embrace the cause to fight cancer. Pay it forward so we may find a solution to this disease that as it has taken so many we love. Pass it on and Pay it Forward

FALL GOLF GETAWAY IN NEW YORK CITY | BY ELLE BREC

Golf, Shopping, Technology and Fun

in the Big Apple Located in the center of the world’s fashion hub in New York City, in Midtown Manhattan. In the Herald Square shopping center, next to the Manhattan Mall, and steps away from Fashion Ave is the New York Golf Center’s largest retail location. If that is still an unfamiliar area, it is next to the Macy’s flagship store on Broadway, the Thanksgiving Day Parade Route, in between Times Square and Madison Square Park. Due to this amazing location, New York Golf Center is one of the first golf shops to provide the newest collections of golf apparel and ac-

cessories. This is because most brands like Nike, Adidas, and Under Armor, have showrooms in the city for merchandisers to choose what collections to carry. The NYC market caters to the sharpest dressing golfers that have a sophisticated, hip, urban style. From the finance crowd, to park avenue residents, to world travelers there is no shortage of affluent customers. Many Europeans and Asians shop in NY and love the selection because the products aren’t available where they live. What sets the New York Golf Center apart is the offering of collection-based displays creating

a shopping environment for golfers to effortlessly find the perfect matching shirt and pant combinations. The brand’s entire collection is folded in an organized, refined manner on a table, as opposed when it is hung on a rack making only a sliver of the shirt visible. Apparel designers recently honed in on creating one hue of pants to match multiple shirts, as well as a hat, a belt, a glove, and golf cleats. Be as stylishly coordinated as Rickie Fowler in PUMA without having to go to multiple stores to find each piece, or have to wait for a shipment for an online order is huge. For golfers with a taste for boutique fashion like J.Lindeberg, Maide by Bonobos, and Wolsey they will find it all here. Whether you need staple pieces for your golf closet, a high stake business meeting on the course, or are a trendsetter in need of the newest designs, the New York Golf Center has it all and more. When New Englanders plan a vacation in fall, golf and New York City usually is not the first combination that comes to mind. You can overlook the beautiful and historical Hudson River as the Golf Center’s driving range on Chelsea Piers is a fantastic destination for any vacation. It makes for a great date spot if you are on a romantic vacation, if it’s a trip with the guys, have some drinks and spend the day in the sports complex, or keep your kids excited for golf on a family vacation. Not far from the pier is the hot spot, the Highline, a new age park made from up-cycled abandoned train tracks where wildflowers have been growing for years. It is complete with artistic displays, cool lounge chairs, food, and awesome views. You’ll leave the city with everything you need, new golf apparel and gear, and warmed up from the driving range, and from the pulse of the city, an overall feeling of being alive, if that isn’t enough, you can always stop and play a round on the way home.

COUPLE OF TRAVELERS //

by Alice and Danny Scott

Carmel-by-the-Sea

and Pebble Beach

Pebble Beach is an overarching draw for golfers but it cannot overshadow Carmel-by-the-Sea. Joined at the hip, Carmel’s one square mile of whimsical cottages, floral kaleidoscope, 100s of eclectic shops, galleries, restaurants and wine rooms all lead down to the ocean crashing into the beach that is Pebble. A historical walking tour by Gail from Boston reveals the fairy tales of Carmel, how Comstock built Hansel and Gretel cottages for his wife’s felt dolls studio. The aesthetically minded aspiring and inspired gathered through the decades holding true to the heritage of an artisan community. Homes have names not numbers. Retrieving mail at the post office is a social event. High heels are still banned without a permit from City Hall due to uneven roads but Clint Eastwood lifted the ban of walking with ice cream cones in 88. He might have had a Gran Torino but apparently not a grand exit as people still think he’s mayor. He never made our day with a sighting but the wine walk did. 14 tasting rooms tucked in to adorably decorated alleys, on the main streets or in Carmel Plaza delight with stories in every certified sip. Carmel could be Charmel with all the boutiques and happy, healthy

people savoring local flavors infused with magic, like Grasings’ white linen upscale introduction of abalone, La Playa’s tenderloin and tuna in a hillside garden, Cantinetta Luca’s home-style Italian and the chef’s savoire faire at Pattisserie Boissiere. Imagine, founder Devvy traded Carmel for the now flat broke Stockton! The Inns and outs are easy with accommodations from garden cottages to full service hotels like Pine Inn, the oldest, where pining and wining take

a positive twist with canopied headboards and a window view through pine branches of, yes Pebble Beach. The sea beckons a morning stroll on white fluffy sand as we head to the point where hallowed fairways kiss the coast. We clamber up the rocks to sneak a peek at the First Tee Open, watching Tommy Armour III hit the 10th green and chat with a local about life in Carmel before a marshal advises our descent. That’s ok; we feast at the Pine Inn’s Il Fornaio buffet and head to Pebble’s front gate to walk all 18 of the iconic US equivalent to St. Andrews. We imagined our ball flight, checked out the shops and Tap Room, satisfied, as Danny’s look alike, John Cook sealed the Champions’ deal and we saved $495 each not playing. Most tournaments at Pebble alternate with play on Spyglass and Poppy Hills, formerly the Hilltop Course, renamed by a winning survey. “Buckhorn Ranch” would have worked. If you don’t capture a Pebble pet photo, it is not the posing deer’s fault. This we played and you can too for just $80/round, freshly redone by RTJ II who says, “It’s a renaissance more than a renovation.” It’s superb. Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley is also redesigning its dried fake lakes, crusty graveyards of by gone

balls. Already a great track, it has Big Valley views and fine dining on the terrace. Doris Day’s A framed cottage perches high above the tee box of 18, a focal point from all directions. Blow her a kiss for a sweet finish. One returning Italian guest saw Doris (now 90) for the first time on her balcony. He shouted, “I love you Doris! I’ve looked for you for 34 years and if I were 20 years younger I’d climb up to hug you.” She replied, “I love you too and if I were 20 years younger, I’d let you.“ She then sent an autographed picture by way of staff. Doris still owns Car-

mel’s Cypress Inn, where dogs are allowed but children are not, perhaps the reason current Carmel is a well-coifed canine community featuring the Doggie Gazette in newsstands. Poodle weekend was a high stepping promenade of prissy pooches by well-heeled yet unpretentious people. A wine taster quipped that Carmel is for newlyweds or nearly dead, but all in between make the scene. On the Sunset Center stage, Joan Rivers performed while staying at Pine Inn’s sister hotel – Tally Ho, Joan. We watched Ira Glass (Garrison Keeler meets Woody Allen) and Two Dancers perform anecdotal interpretations of life’s quirks – hysterical! If you’re a sucker for the sea and tranquility, consider moving here. Land taxes are only 1% but the price tags are in the millions. Maybe vacation first; save water, drink wine and check it out. www.carmelcalifornia.com

THE PERFECT LIFE //

by Katherine Dyson

The Heavy Hitters and the Quiet Secrets of Carolina Golf Pinehurst, Myrtle Beach, Kiawah, Hilton Head. — there are few golfers on this planet who haven’t at least heard of these highly touted golf meccas. And for good reason. You need only book a room in one of these areas and then it’s golf ‘til you drop as long as your vacation lasts. Still in addition to these heavy hitters there are other places to play among the 800 or so tracks in the Carolinas that also offer great golf and sat very affordable prices, especially in the off season. All you need do is go east from Pinehurst, for example, to find top plays in Fayetteville like King’s Grant Golf & Country Club, Cypress Lake Golf Course and Anderson Creek in Spring Lake, a picturesque traditional layout with pine-lined fairways and large bunkers designed by Davis Love III. Fayetteville has the same rolling fairways and soft white native sand as Pinehurst but is way more affordable. Then there are the sandy barrier islands of the Outer Banks where in the “off season” the pace is slower, prices lower so it’s a win, win with six championship courses including the Kilmarlic Golf Club, the Rees Jones-designed Currituck Club and the seaside Nags Head Golf Links.

AFFORDABLE SECRETS

Places like the Olde English District and Fayetteville may not actually be “secret” especially to those who live in the region, but they are certainly not as well known by folks up north. So listen up: these areas offer a lot of bang for the buck when it comes to pairing excellent golf and good weather late into the fall and early winter. Olde English District About 20 minutes south of Charlotte over the border in South Carolina, the Olde English District has a whole lot going for it when it comes to golf.

Settled by the English in the mid-1770s, the region was the site for many Revolutionary War battles. Today your battles are played out on an array of more than 20 golf courses. Offcourse visit gracious old plantations and historic areas like Union and Brattonsville. Play golf from Rock Hill to Golf Digest-acclaimed Cheraw State Park Golf Course designed by Tom Jackson around Lake Juniper and considered a “Super Value” by Gold Digest. Olde Sycamore Plantation, another Tom Jackson course is also highly rated. There is the toney Camden Country Club, the oldest club in the state with a lot of kudos from list-makers (No. 3 in South Carolina’s Top 50) Designed by Donald Ross, Camden has been the venue for many prestigious tournaments in its long history. Also check out another Ross design, Fort Mill Country Club. Other good bets include Cobblestone Park Golf Club, Edgewater Golf Club, focal point of a Fuzzy Zoeller golf community, River Chase Golf Club in historic Union and Springfield Golf Club, a Clyde Johnston design that is certain to challenge you with 13 holes teased by the Catawba River. There are plenty of golfer-friendly places to stay including Wingate by Wyndham and Microtel Suites. Star Deal Golf Packages of South Carolina features a variety of golf packages. For example in the Olde English District there is a five night, five round plan from $425 playing Cheraw State Park, Edgewater Golf Club, Fort Mill Golf Club, Springfield Golf Club, and Olde Sycamore Plantation staying at Microtel, Wingate by Wyndham, Hilton Garden or Courtyard by Marriott. golfpackagesofsc.com

INDOOR GOLF GUIDE 2014 - 2015

SimulateYour Game by Tim Branco

In the last 10 years technology has made it much easier to understand everything about the golf swing

When I first started playing golf the idea of simulating your game meant standing in front of a mirror practicing my golf swing. The refection would give me a look at my swing and a matt with a sprinkling of baby powder would show me my swing path and impact angle of the club. While the process was simple and somewhat effective, after 1 hour just about everything in the room was coated in baby powder including me. In the last 10 years technology has made it much easier to understand everything about the golf swing. Not only can we have complete feedback on the mechanics of the swing but also distance, spin rate, ball flight and launch angles. We can visualize exactly what is going on and even retain the data to measure stages of improvement and overall results. Golf simulators have exploded in the marketplace with installations in golf clubs, health clubs, training facilities and indoor golf centers that have multiple units for golfers to play in any weather in any season worldwide. Indoor golf has truly arrived and is becoming one of the fastest growing sectors in the golf industry today. If all the forces in the universe seem to be keeping you from your favorite sport, the virtual world can step up and take its place. This is where a golf simulator comes in -- a computerized game of golf, in your golf club or at your favorite café or health club, designed to mimic the real game while also improving your skills. It takes about 4-5 hours to play a round of golf today and quite frankly time is the number one deterrent in growing the game of golf. You can play 18 holes on almost any course

in the world today in just 1 hour in any weather for a small fraction of what it would cost to travel there by teeing it up indoors. Granted it is not the same but technology has become so advanced that indoor golf is truly here to stay and it is amazingly realistic. Five years ago finding a convenient indoor golf facility would have been difficult to say the least. Today, there are simulators in a number of public and private golf courses and teaching facilities and health clubs throughout New England. In addition golf simulator businesses are one of golf’s fastest growing sectors as they are sprouting up just about everywhere in the region. Many facilities have 2-6 simulators, full restaurants, bar service and have virtual clubs where you can play courses from around the world and compete in leagues or tournaments as well. A foursome can play 18 holes at any chosen course in just over 2 hours and for as little as $25.00 an hour. Today’s most advanced simulators put you in a true 3-D environment, as though you’ve been transported physically into an ultra-high-def video game. Stereoscopic cameras are trained on the hitting zone, where they record club speed, ball speed, launch angle and all components of spin. The flight of the ball, projected into the virtual course in the time it takes the ball to hit the screen, replicates the shot that would result in the outside world with remarkable precision. So its simple play golf anywhere, anytime, on any course, in any weather indoors. You can have your cake, and eat it too!

and business in graduate school. Then it was that giant leap into business, and in my case I started out as an analyst and got into the brokerage side of things later on as I saw new opportunities.

NEGM: What has made your brokerage firm so successful? CS: It’s been a pretty simple formula. Focus on your clients first. We’ve always sided with investors and tried to provide them with better deals. Originally it was reducing commissions from the hundreds of dollars full-service brokerages were charging. Later it was reducing mutual fund fees or offering the first no-fee IRA. In some ways, I started Schwab to serve people that were like me, who knew what they wanted and were interested in making their own choices and didn’t need to pay for advice that was often conflicted by high commissions. We’ve evolved from there, for sure, but the same approach has stuck with us and brought great success.

NEGM: How did you become involved with golf in the first place? CS: I first got started in golf as a caddy. I also began playing golf with the Yolo Fliers Club in Woodland, California. Golf was a wonderful window into the world of business for me. I got to walk around all day listening to the conversations of the players I was caddying for. I learned how they thought and talked about business problems. It was a great exposure.

NEGM: To what golf courses do you belong? CS: I belong to several courses and have been fortunate to play many courses around the world, but one of my favorites is Stock Farm in Hamilton, Montana, where I am a one of the founders. It’s a beautiful course set near the rugged mountains in western Montana. It’s a favorite place of mine for fishing as well as golf. And I am proud of the San Francisco course at Harding Park which is a beautiful public course.

NEGM: You have played with many pros and celebrities, so who would be in your Dream Foursome?

Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and Al Geiberger

NEGM: Why did you decide to sponsor the Charles Schwab Cup? CS: Our clients and employees have a great affinity for the sport of golf, a game they both watch and play. As a result, our partnership with the PGA TOUR helps us to meet many of our marketing goals. We’ve had great success with our PGA TOUR and the Champions Tour over the past decade.

NEGM: Explain your struggle with dyslexia and what you have learned? CS: It was very difficult initially. I thought I was pretty bright, but I struggled in English and writing. However, this taught me not to give up when something was difficult and to find my own way into success. I also learned a lasting lesson that applies to this day: that I wasn’t and can’t be good at everything and that I need to surround myself with people who can help me out. Also, I’ve always felt that I had very strong conceptual capabilities. I could imagine things much faster than some other people who were stuck thinking sequentially. That helped me in solving complicated business problems.

NEGM: With what charities are you involved? CS: Helen and I are very involved in several charities. Our foundation gives to education and poverty-related charities here in the Bay Area. And we’ve been involved with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art for a long time. I am currently chairman and we are halfway through a very exciting expansion of the museum.

NEGM: What goals or projects are still ahead for you? CS: I remain focused on building a great and sustainable company that provides great benefit to the millions of clients doing business with us.

MOLORI UNPLUGGED //

by John Molori

Golf: The Ultimate Morality Play On the surface, golf can be described simply: fun, challenging, exhilarating, but a deeper look exposes the real essence of the game, one that can uncover a competitor’s true character as a person. In his book, “The Honest Truth About Dishonesty,” author and Duke University Professor of Psychology and Behavioral Economics Dan Ariely devotes an entire chapter to the morality of golf. Ariely paints golf as an outward demonstration of man versus himself, requiring skill, self-dependence, self-monitoring, and lofty moral standards. He also relates that because golf is such a frustrating and difficult game, there are impulses and temptations to cheat, even slightly. We have all seen golfers, perhaps even ourselves, succumb to the temptation of moving the ball a few inches left, right, forward, or back in order to gain an advantage. Maybe we nudge the ball with the club, a shoe, or by stealing a moment to actually pick the ball up and move it. For Ariely, the question comes down to being caught. How likely is a golfer to illegally move the ball if it can be done without being noticed by other players? Golfers are often unwilling to admit their own irrational or unethical behavior. There are gray areas and rules in golf that are open to interpretation. These, according to the author, can be traps for dishonesty. Ariely writes, “Unlike other sports, golf

has no referee, umpire, or panel of judges to make sure rules are followed or to make calls in questionable situations. The golfer has to decide for him or herself what is and is not acceptable.” The link between golf and personal character is not lost on some well-known Boston sports media duffers. Red Sox Hall of Famer and popular multimedia personality Rico Petrocelli, a devout Christian, has taken the moral side of the game to an even higher level. He explains, “I learned about Links Players International from a friend. It’s a Christian ministry, where people come from all different churches and play golf. There were prayer groups all over the country, but none here in this area. “We started one up about four years ago. We meet at a course, have lunch, do a short Bible study with some discussion, and then we go play golf. It’s non-denominational and everybody is welcome. Basically we use golf to promote our faith

and lead to a stronger church life.” WCVB-TV sportscasting icon Mike Lynch also sees the ethical side of golf, but more from the perspective of a caddy than catechism. “I was a caddy at Tedesco and I learned how to handle adversity,” explains the multiple Massachusetts Sportscaster of the Year award winner. “Caddying taught me how to behave on the course, and I think the game teaches you to be a real man.” The man they call Lynchie believes in a moral code of golf. “What is said on the course stays on the course,” he asserts. “I think golf can also help fix relationships. Prior to playing, you may have certain perceptions of each other. You feel entirely different about a person after playing for four hours.”

Kevin Walsh, Comcast Sports Net

True lovers of the game see golf as more than just a physical and mental challenge, and more than just some enjoyable pastime. Strangely enough, it might just be a rough and tumble hockey player from Melrose, MA who most effectively describes the spiritual side of the game. “You can see a person’s level of integrity on the course,” says former Boston Bruin and current NESN Bruins’ analyst Andy Brickley. “You can see honesty and a sense of gentlemanship. Golf gives you a peek into what people are really like.” John Molori is the co-author of “The Cracker Jack Collection: Baseball’s Prized Players.” Like him on Facebook at John Molori, Twitter @MoloriMedia. TEAM NE UPDATE: OCT. / NOV. 2014 TRACKING OUR PLAYERS ON THE TOURS //

by Steve Riggs

The FedEx Playoffs are over and the United States got trounced in the Ryder Cup. In addition to Keegan Bradley, Scott Stallings and Jim Renner retained their cards along with next season’s exempt J.J.Henry. Billy Andrade on the Champions Tour is having a solid rookie year. The LPGA Tour wrapped up their season in the U.S. for 2014. Jon Curran of the Web.Com Tour will join the PGA Tour in a few weeks and the Symetra Futures Tour finished their season with no TNE players moving up to the LPGA Tour. It has been a long and difficult season for many of our TNE players.

PGA TOUR Keegan Bradley, (VT), made 21 cuts in 26 starts with 1 WD. Three of his cuts came in majors. Bradley’s best finishes were a 2nd at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-4th at the U.S. Open, Bridgestone and Greenbrier. Keegan’s scoring average of 70.060 produced earnings of $2,828,638. Bradley finished 28th on the regular season money list with much improved playing stats. Scott Stallings, (MA) made 12 cuts in 28 starts earning $1,385,689 and 77th on the money list. Scott won the Farmers Insurance Open in January. Ranked 25th in driving distance, Stallings is 155th in driving accuracy. An extremely talented TNE player, we hope Scott’s stats improve before the 2014-15 season. Jim Renner, (MA), finished the season 121st and returns to the PGA Tour next season. Jim’s 2nd place finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am went a long way toward his finishing inside the top 125. Renner made 6 cuts in 25 starts with 1 WD. A scoring average of 71.843 generated earnings of $763,978. I’m sure Renner is hard at work in preparation for the start of the new season. JJ Henry, (CT) made 18 cuts in 28 starts with 1 WD. He earned $554,615 with a scoring average of 71.064. Finishing outside the top 125, J.J. has an exemption for the 2014-15 season from his win at the Reno-Tahoe Open in 2012.

James Driscoll, (MA) made 11 cuts in 25 starts with 1 WD. Driscoll’s earnings of $371,404 and a scoring average of 71.454. James dropped to 162nd on the Money List. It’s the first time since 2008 James will not have regular status on the PGA Tour next season.

Tim Petrovic, (MA) has played both the PGA and Web.Com tours. His combined earnings on both tours for this season are $138,352.

CHAMPIONS TOUR Brad Faxon, (RI) has earnings are $224,136 in 17 starts with a scoring average is 71.78. Fax’s best finish of T-3RD came at the Quebec Championship. In addition to his play, Brad has been tagged for studio analyst duties with Fox Sports as they enter the golf market next season. Good luck Fax. Billy Andrade, (RI) in his 17 starts continues to have a good rookie season earning $625,017. Billy’s 2nd at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic and P-2ND at the Shaw Charity Classic are his best finishes to date. A scoring average of 70.47 continues to improve month to month. Andrade is ranked 21st on the Money List. Billy’s return to competitive golf is paying off. Good to see him back. Dana Quigley, (MA) has not played since the 3M Championship in August. Before that it was May when the original Ironman toured the fairways on Champions Tour. Dana’s earnings of $18,232 are for 6 starts this season. Our prayers continue for Dana’s son Devon in his continuing recovery from his traumatic brain injury. PH Horgan III, (RI) has played a limited schedule on the Champions Tour starting 9 events to date. His earnings are $61,568 with a scoring average of 72.04. Horgan’s best finish came recently at the Quebec Championship where he finished T-10th.

LPGA TOUR Alison Walshe, (MA) made 11 cuts in 22 starts including her T-7TH at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. Alison’s earnings are $119,992 with a scoring average of 73.015. Improving her stats off the tee paid off at the Yokohama Tire Classic. Alison’s GIR rank dropped to 133rd. There is little question Walshe has taken to improving her stats and it shows.

EUROPEAN PGA TOUR Peter Uihlein, (MA) continues to struggle on the European PGA Tour but showed improvement when he finished 10th at the Nedbank Golf Challenge in August. A scoring average of 71.91 in 19 events has netted Uihlein $355,808 US on the European Tour.

WEB.COM TOUR Jon Curran, (MA) got his ticket punched and joins the PGA Tour for the 2014-15 season after the regular season 12th on the Web.Com money list. Jon’s win at the Brasil Champions and two top 10 finishes thrust him to the top of the heap. Making 8 cuts in 23 starts with a scoring average of 70.38, Jon’s earnings were $231,854. Curran’s success on the PGA Tour will depend on his increasing his Driving Distance of 276.7 yards. Jeff Curl, (CT), finished 58th and just outside the magic 50 number for PGA Tour status. Jeff’s stats are all good except his pesky driving accuracy that sits at 150th. Curl made 9 cuts in 19 starts earning $82,759 with a solid scoring average of 69.83. Trevor Murphy, (VT) has had a bit of a drought since his 2-Top 10’s early in the season. Trevor made 6 cuts in 14 starts earning $39,844 with a scoring average of 70.95. Ranked 18th off the Tee, Murphy’s driving accuracy along with sand game improvement hold the secret to his success. Fran Quinn, (MA) has played 4 events making 2 cuts on the Web.Com earning $3,438 plus $26,187 at the U.S. Open Championship for a total of $26,187. It was the first time Quinn, 49, had made the cut at the championship in spite of previous trips. Fran is eligible for the Champions Tour in March 2015. Rob Oppenheim, (MA) made 5 cuts in 14 start with earnings of $63,509. Rob’s scoring average was a respectable 70.08. Improving his driving accuracy and we’ll see Rob on the PGA Tour. Driving accuracy is his only issue. The rest of Rob’s stats appear sound.

LPGA SYMETRA FUTURES TOUR Brittany Altomare, (MA) made 18 cuts in 19 starts with six top 10 finishes and earnings of $35,516. Brittany’s season ending scoring average was 71.690. Ranked 16th on the money list at year’s end we are anxious to see Altomare on the LGPA Tour soon. Molly Aronsson, (VT) made 10 cuts in 19 starts including a win at the Island Resort Championship. Molly had earnings of $21,631 with an improved scoring average of 74.660. She finished the season 30th on the money list. Molly’s putting is the only issue and we hope she can improve it before next season. Natalie Sheary, (CT) has had a rough season making 9 cuts in 12 starts with earnings of $7,643 via a scoring average of 73.485. Also competing on the 2014 LPGA Tour after earning her card, the West Hartford native missed 6 cuts with 1 DQ in 7 starts. We hope her off season work will yield rewards in 2015.

ROSS’S RULES // By Jack Ross

Fall and Winter Rules As we head into the fall and winter golf seasons, it’s a good time to take a look at seasonal rules. This is a topic of some confusion. Let’s say you’re playing in October and your ball disappears into a heavy accumulation of leaves on the fairway or in the rough, and you are unable to find it. If the course has established a local rule treating accumulations of leaves as ground under repair, you are entitled to drop a ball without penalty within one club-length of the nearest point of relief. A rules decision advises that such local rules should be restricted to holes at which leaf trouble occurs. Keep in mind that, in order to take such relief, it must be “known or virtually certain” that your ball was lost in the leaves. If a bunker is covered by leaves, you are permitted to remove enough leaves to identify your ball, but if you touch a leaf on your backswing you incur a 2-stroke penalty. However, courses may provide local rules treating accumulations of leaves in bunkers as ground under repair. Now let’s turn to the amorphous subject of “winter rules.” There are no provisions in the rules themselves concerning allowances for winter conditions. However, an appendix to the rules provides a model local rule in the case of conditions such as heavy snows, spring thaws, or prolonged rains that justify the use of “preferred lies” to promote fair play or help protect the course.

The model rule provides that a ball lying in a closely mown area (a fairway) through the green may be lifted, cleaned, and placed within a specified distance (six inches, a club-length). The player must mark the ball before lifting it. Frequently, courses place signs at the first tee stating that “winter rules” or “preferred lies” are in effect, without further guidance. The MGA recommends that such local rules be spelled out on a current local rules sheet or golf shop board, to avoid confusion. Clubs might also use e-mails or newsletters to explain local rules. Autumn golfers often encounter dew and frost. Except on the teeing ground, a player incurs a 2-stroke penalty under Rule 13-2 if he removes dew or frost from an area immediately behind or to the side of the ball, or from the line of play or line of putt, if such removal would cause a potential advantage. If you’re a hardy winter golfer, you might encounter snow and ice on the course. Snow and ice may be treated as either loose impediments or casual water, at the option of the player. In the latter case, the ball must be dropped (or placed if on the putting green) within one club-length of the nearest point of relief. Jack Ross completed an intensive PGA/USGA rules workshop and also contributes rules articles to ESPN.com.

EQUIPMENT REVIEW // by Ed Travis

Retailers Aggressive

Club Pricing One of the most frequent stories in the general media recently has been the fall off in sales of golf equipment and the resultant consolidations of operations by manufacturers and retailers. For golfers though the slowdown presents an opportunity for upgrading equipment to take advantage of the latest technology, sometimes for hundreds off regular prices. To find out the real story and as a service to our readers, New England Golf Monthly surveyed current pricing for some of the popular clubs. Drivers are a bellwether for club sales so let’s look at an example such as the best-selling TaylorMade SLDR model introduced in July. It immediately became the most popular model on the PGA Tour with its sliding weight along the sole that allows the user to adjust weight placement to help produce the desired ball flight. When it first hit the shops the SLDR carried a suggested retail price of $399 and now may be purchased from at least one reputable retailer for $60 less so bargains are there for the searching. The Nike VR_S Covert 2.0 driver is being discounted $100 from the original $300 sticker price and the Ping G25 driver with only slightly less adjustability than the new Ping G30 can be bought for $300--$50 less than MSRP. And finally one of my personal favorites the TaylorMade JetSpeed though superseded and no longer in production may be bought for $200 at almost any shop or big box store. That’s a cool $100 savings on this very good driver. Looking at irons, beneficiaries of significant design and material changes as makers strived to provide added distance, if the set in your bag is more than two or three years

old it’s time to consider upgrading. The hottest selling irons since being introduced in June is the SLDR model from TaylorMade. A set comprised of 4-iron through pitching wedge with steels shafts commonly sells for $900, the price TMaG calls retail. But at least one outlet has them for $788,

another case where at little research let us find a lower price. If you have your heart set on a set of Titleist AP1 714

irons the price is pretty much the same where ever we looked, $800 for 4-iron through attach wedge. However should Callaway X2 Hot irons with steel shafts (4-AW) be of interest most stores are discounting them from the original $800 price down to $600 and one we found is charging $525. All the club prices quoted are valid at the time this is written and should you buy online, shipping will be often be added and that may be a significant amount though offset by in some instances with no charge for sales tax.

Many models of hybrids are not discounted though we did find the SLDR Rescue by Taylor Made $20 less expensive in one online store. Generally though, like putters, hybrid prices are about the same across the board but may be subject to negotiation depending on the retailer’s stock and if it is an out of date model. Finally, be sure to deal with someone you trust as counterfeit clubs are an epidemic cheating everyone but most of all the purchaser who expects the latest and greatest but gets disappointment and frustration.

Megan Khang Helps Lead Team USA to Wire-to-Wire Victory at the Inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship. Team USA got out to an early lead and never let it go, finishing with a team-total score of 17-under par 559 for the wire-to-wire victory at the inaugural World Junior Girls Golf Championship at Angus Glen Golf Club (South Course) in Markham, Ont. The Americans (137-141-137-144—559) began Wednesday’s final round with a commanding 16-shot lead and went on to shoot a team-total, evenpar 144 to capture top spot on the medal podium.Team USA counted matching rounds of even-par 72 by 16-year old Megan Khang (67-73-7072—282) and 15-year old Angel Yin (73-72-73-72—290) while 15-year old Mika Liu (70-69-67-73—279), who finished as individual gold medalist, rounded out the scoring with a round of 1-over 73. For Team USA non-playing captain Courtney Myhrum, the victory capped a special week that left her beaming with pride for her young squad. “They’re my dream team, it’s been wonderful it’s been a great week and a real team effort; I couldn’t be more proud of the three of them, the way they conducted themselves on the course and off the course,” said Myhrum. “Go play and have fun, there is really not much else I can say to these three. They had great course management and are really easy to captain because they know how to get around the golf course – they didn’t really need me this week.”

Boston & Mississippi: One degree of separation from Golf & Glory

Perhaps like Kevin Bacon everyone and everything is just one degree of separation from Boston. Certainly Scotland, Mississippi, the Ryder Cup and the LPGA Legends Handa Cup felt this way. While Keegan Bradley, New England’s golfing son, was in Scotland playing his heart out in the Ryder Cup with his fellow Americans his aunt, Pat Bradley, had an even larger task playing to beat the world in the Handa Cup an LPGA Legends event. The Handa Cup is an LPGA Legends match play event that pits the USA against

the rest of the world, no easy task. Held this year at the Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Mississippi the event showcased not only the unbelievable talent of these LPGA Legends from around the globe but the incredible southern hospitality that truly should be bottled and sold as it is such a rare and special commodity found nowhere else in the world. With all the hoopla around Tom Watson and his captaincy of the Ryder Cup perhaps the focus should be on Nancy Lopez and her winning formula in the Handa Cup. The Handa Cup format entails an International team competition pitting 12 USA-born LPGA Legends

against 12-internationally born LPGA Legends in 36 holes of team and singles matches over two days. Players engage in stroke play within each match and team points are awarded for wins and ties. Team U.S. defeated the World team, 28-20. The teams read like a who’s who of woman’s golf. Team USA captioned by Nancy Lopez included; Elaine Crosby, Pat Bradley, Beth Daniel, Juli Inkster, Christa Johnson, Rosie Jones, Meg Mallon, Barb Mucha, Laurie Rinker, Nancy Scranton, Val Skinner, Sherri Steinhauer, Sherri Turner. Team World captioned by Sally Little included; Dawn Coe-Jones, Helen Alfredsson, Jane Crafter, Laura Davies, Alicia Dibos, Wendy Doolan, Trish Johnson, Lorie Kane, Jenny Lidback, Liselotte Neumann, Alison Nicholas, Mieko Nomura, Jan Stephenson. While it was interesting enough to have Pat Bradley playing on US soil looking to beat the best legends in the world while her nephew was in Scotland looking to do the same, both in real time on the exact same weekend. Pat Bradley originally from Westford, Massachusetts now resides in Hyannis Port on Cape Cod. “After 30 years of living in Dallas I wanted to get back to my New England roots” says Bradley. As a twist of fate would have it playing in the Handa Cup pro-am was Margaret Ferriss White the daughter of Boo Ferriss , Mississippi

Old Waverly Golf Course in West Point, Mississippi

native and the famous Boston Red Sox pitcher that was part of the 1946 team that also included Ted Williams, Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr and Dom DiMaggio. Boo Ferriss was a pitcher for Boston during the ’46 World Series and pitched a shutout in game 4 and later became the pitching coach for the Boston Red sox before returning to Mississippi. In 2002 he was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame. Now at 92 and a half Boo had this to say about Boston “We love the Boston area and New England it is a great place to be. Fenway is number one there is no doubt about it and the fans are something else they live and die for their Red Sox”. His favorite memories of his time in New England include fall foliage, the seafood, clams and lobster. What Boo Ferriss would like everyone to know about Mississippi; “the people are great, they are friendly, care about each other and stay close to one another. It is a great place to visit and people are always amazed by the history and the great Mississippi river” Perhaps it is the southern drawl and the way the ”ya’ all” runs off the tongue or the very gentile ways southerners have of speaking and conducting themselves or the natural and gentle pace of life in the south that makes you want to listen little more carefully and stay a little longer.

GORMAN VS. GEARY // by Tim Geary

A couple of decades back Taiwan was winning the Little League World Series every year, beating the snot out of an American team. It was essentially a world tournament in one bracket and a U.S.A. tournament in the other, guaranteed to make sure that America had a representation in the championship game at Williamsport. When it became apparent that the country that invented baseball could not beat kids from the other side of the world the “adults” who run Little League Baseball (TM) decided that if you can’t beat ‘em, then ban ‘em. For a couple of years foreign countries could not participate in the LL series. We won, finally.......................... but what did we win? Quickly the lords of LL opened the competition up again. What they learned is that sometimes, often as it turned out, there are other people on this planet who are really good. So it has become in golf. For years the United States dominated the Ryder Cup matches, crushing the team from the United Kingdom. The matches were played, the U.S. won and nobody noticed. Heck, most of the top American players refused to participate. Nothing in it for them. Then the Golden Bear, Jack Nicklaus, had a brainstorm. Let all of Europe make up the team from across the pond. Made sense. America is so much larger than the U.K. and this would level the playing field. Well the field may be level now but the golf certainly has not been. The Euros have won 11 of the last 15 competitions and this year they crushed our lads.

People like Tom Gorman, who believes that the Ryder Cup is nothing more than a PGA of America shell game, will tell you that our guys choked like dogs or that they only go through the motions in this competition because they don’t get paid. The truth, sad as it may be, is that the Euros are better in the team format than the Americans and they have more enthusiasm for the matches. We care a lot. They are passionate. For example; During practice rounds on the PGA Tour the American players love to have their money matches. They’ll go one on one or even have best ball. The Euros regularly play the alternate shot format that often decides the Ryder Cup. This year we won the fourball (best ball) format and got killed in the foursomes (alternate shot). We used to be able to get away with that in the past because we would dominate singles matches. No longer. The Euros are not intimidated by the “great” American players anymore because most of them compete over here regularly. America may have more players in the top 100 in the world but the Euros have more players capable of being number one in the world right now. They have Rory, who is number one. They have Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose. And for some reason they have two players who cannot seem to get it done on the PGA Tour – Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia – but who turn into Supermen when the Ryder Cup comes around. Perhaps the Euros enthusiasm for the Ryder Cup stems from the fact that they only play in these matches every two years whereas the Americans participate in the Presidents Cup matches in the years between Ryder Cup events. It’s no longer as special to our guys. Gorman thinks the Ryder Cup is a rip off, run by charlatans. To a degree he’s correct. It is an exhibition, but then so are the Olympics. Nothing in golf is as exciting as a Ryder Cup. Where else do you see the possessed eyes of Ian Poulter?

Did the American team choke in the Ryder Cup?

GORMAN VS. GEARY // by Tom Gorman

Despite my extreme loathing of the Ryder Cup Matches, which seems to have evolved into golf’s Super Bowl and World Cup all rolled up into three frenzied days, I was glued to the TV for the better part of the exhibition. Yes, exhibition is the best description because after all the flag-waving and hype about who wins, when you expose the Ryder Cup agenda for what it is, sports fans are shocked. The Ryder Cup is a $50 million fundraiser for the PGA of America, which refuses to pay the players a salary for participating. It’s a mystery to me how the PGA of America has produced this pulled off this scheme to pocket millions in pure profit. First, they take a 17inch trophy and throw the American flag over it and tell us the team is playing for our country, which is bull. Then, they take the top 12 players from the United States, all in the prime of their careers, and own them for one week. The con artists at the PGA of America tell the players what to wear, where to go, what to eat, what to say, where to play and when to make public appearances. Not only that, the team captain gives a two-year commitment without compensation. What other sport pulls this scam? If we flashback to The Country Club in Brookline in 1999, when players like Phil Mickelson and David Duval balked at the free services they were providing, the PGA of America reluctantly decided to give them $200,000, but designated to the players favorite charity. My favorite headline from 1999 read “Cup Filled with Whine.” Cheerleaders like Tim Geary will tell you the Ryder Cup is the mother of all golf team compe-

titions; that Tom Watson was captain fantastic; that the 12 best players weren’t there; that the US team had great chemistry; and the politically correct Geary is 100 percent gullible on the flagwaving conspiracy theory. The fact of the matter is that no player dares to ask for money because placing money ahead of team colors is unpatriotic and PR suicide. I’m still waiting for the day a player refuses to play in the Ryder Cup because it’s considered working for free for the PGA of America. The American team choked and they have choked in the last five matches. So what? I bet if you put a $12 million purse on the line, $1 million for each winning team member, you’d see the US team respond with more enthusiasm, more emotion and dominance. Yes, motivation on the PGA Tour is driven by money! There’s an abundance of riches to PGA Tour players since 95 players earned more than $1 million this year. So if I hate the Ryder Cup, why watch? Because there is an invisible lure to the Ryder Cup, that’s why. Ryder Cup history is cluttered with players so nervous they almost puke on their own shoes. Nerves and pressure are inseparable at the Ryder Cup. Hands shake, stomachs churn, sweat permeates, hearts beat faster and all because players are on a worldwide stage and the goofy golf format guarantees a compelling golf event. The players are out of their usual comfort zone. Golf is essentially an every-man-for-himself game. Here’s a tee, ball, clubs, scorecard, go play and give me your score. When it’s Ryder Cup week, everything changes. Who cares about team chemistry? These players compete against each other for 44 weeks during the regular Tour season, and besides the US chemistry is totally connected to dollar signs. One parting factoid before prepping for the 2016 Ryder Cup Matches at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota: Eight members of the Europe team own homes in Florida. No member of the US team owns property in Europe! Tom Gorman has been and continues to be an angry, white golf writer.
