From the Editor A Summer To Remember Mark Twain wrote, “If you don’t like the weather in New England, just wait a few minutes.” Living here we expect to have ever changing weather that is predictably, unpredictable. Often times in New England the seasons mingle together throwing us the proverbial weather curveball. Not so this year, it has by all accounts been a summer to remember and golf has been some of the best ever throughout the northeast. It is September and fall will soon be upon us but there is plenty golf still to play and some of the best conditions all season are just getting better. Billy Andrade said, “It’s Great for New England golf fans that the PGA Tour has made Labor Day weekend their annual end-of-summer destination at the TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts.” Billy could never of imagined that today the Deutsche Bank Championship would now host the top 100 players in golf in the second leg of four heading into the FedEx Cup Finals and the Tour Championship. There is no payday in golf or for that matter any other sport quite like this; 1.4 million each week for 4 consecutive tournaments with the overall winner taking home 10 Million. Last year at the end of September Bill Haas won the Tour Championship and was unaware he also won the FedEx Cup until told he had enough points in the scorer’s tent. He walked away with 11.5 million, more than most tour players make in a career, in one day. Ten years ago I don’t think Billy Andrade ever thought this PGA Tour event would ever be what it is today but yes Billy, it is truly great for all of New England. Golf is a game of giving back and for over a week each year thousands of volunteers give their time to make this event a huge success. The Deutsche Bank wanted to bring their brand to New England and the U.S. in a big way and partnered with the PGA Tour creating the Deutsche Bank Championship. Ten years ago I could not spell Deutsche Bank, after hundreds of millions of dollars in economic impact and some of the most exciting golf of the season every year on Labor Day weekend it’s no longer a problem. Thank you Deutsche Bank and thank you Seth Waugh for coming home to New England with this wonderful gift for all of us. Timothy R. Branco, Editor / Publisher

When Golf Was Fun
A must read new collection of 38 tales from the “beer and barbecue circuit” of golf tournaments has just been published by author Pat Wheeler, a Texas journalist and radio show host in Dallas who interviewed a number of colorful pros like Ben Crenshaw, Bruce Lietzke and Don January for his book, “When Golf was Fun.” Wheeler reveals stories of legends Ben Hogan, Miller Barber and others who played when golf was still a game, not a big business. Much like baseball’s barnstorming days, the barbecue circuit was a series of unaffiliated events that brought an extremely high level of golf talent to unassuming towns like Center and Pampa, Texas. Out of these events grew some great stories as these colorful characters played and jump-started the PGA tour. ($19.95) AustinBrothersPublishing.com

Good Looks on the Course
Playing Through the Weather
by Elle Brec
As hurricane season descends upon the U.S., most New Englanders are reminded of how we prefer snow to rain. We gladly weather Nor’easters in the winter months rather than the devastating summer hurricanes like Louisiana and Florida in August. ankfully, by the time the hurricanes make it up the coast, we only have to deal with a few raindrops and light wind. We do not have the luxury of playing golf year round so we cherish every day we can enjoy the outdoors until the cold front comes, even if it means playing in the rain. As long as we stay dry with the right gear, it is not bad at all, even fun! Treasuring those brisk fall mornings with our pumpkin coffees, wearing a light cozy fleece for a morning round while admiring the changing colors, then after perhaps a pumpkin beer and some football, Fall in love again New England.
Proquip
Proquip is privileged the preferred weather wear supplier to the European Teams for the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club in Illinois, this September 28-30. ey are one of the world’s leading innovators of lightweight golf outerwear, and will design custom rain suits featuring fabric technology specially developed for the team. is is not their first time, they’ve designed over a dozen Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup teams since 1991. e breakthrough TourFlex fabric, developed exclusively by ProQuip, features superstretch performance, which enables golfers to swing freely and athletically. Like any product, you get what you pay for because by now we know Gore-tex is top quality and top dollar. Sun Mountain
Footjoy
Sun Mountain has a newly designed StormTight rain suit for 2013 for both men and women. e unique difference between Sun Mountain and other rain jackets is they are made of a waterproof jersey type material. e best way to describe it is instead of being a little stiff, it is completely soft and flowing. If you are caught in torrential downpours, you will definitely stay dry, but the jacket may feel a bit weighed down. Other great outerwear accessories include bucket hats and waterproof ball caps. Now onto keeping our gear dry. Sun mountain umbrellas offer rain protection but more importantly, work great with their push carts to prevent you’re bag from collecting with water. Another cool option is cart mitts that Velcro onto push cart handle or cart steering wheel so can slip hands in and out and leave mitts on the handle/wheel. Sun Mountain was proud to be the official golf outerwear provider for e Arctic Open Golf Championship at the Akureyri Golf Club in Iceland. is unique event offers golfers the novelty of round-the-clock golf in the land of the midnight sun. e international event attracts hundreds of golfers from all corners of the globe. Footjoy specializing in keeping feet dry in the rain expanded their DryJoys collection with their Premiere Rain Jacket and matching pants, the Tour Collection, and their Performance Light Series. e Performance Lined Sweater surprisingly makes a great outerwear piece! Preppy styled people tend to have a difficult time finding rain pieces to match the rest of their wardrobe. Most rain gear is extremely athletic, which is great, but you still want to look nice even if the weather is gloomy. An anonymous reviewer with a handicap of under 5 stated, "What a sweater! I was naturally skeptical when I heard it was a waterproof sweater. However, it exceeded my expectations. Stylish, comfortable, and easy to make a full swing with, this is the best performance sweater on the market. If you play in cool conditions, this is a must for your clothing collection!" e sweater is available in heather navy, heather charcoal, and black, now we just need Khaki colored rain pants with mud guards on the bottom of the pant legs. e Fall 2012 Collection features inspiration from the most beautiful places in the world, including New England’s Bar Harbor, Maine with nautical royal blue and Acadia Rock gray. Celebrity Golfer: Bob Vokey
by Leigh MacKay
Bob Vokey is the first and last name in wedges for touring pros and amateurs alike. e master craftsman, now 72, has had his creative and meticulous nose to the grindstone since 1976, but his high-performance clubs and his “BV” initials became ubiquitous in the golf world soon after he joined Titleist in 1996. A native Canadian who grew up in Montreal, “Voke,” as his friends call him, played hockey, football, and baseball but did not care much for golf, his father’s obsession. He did inherit his father’s skills as a precision tool-and-die maker, however, and when Vokey realized he also had a knack for working with his hands, they both enjoyed some serious tinkering with Dad’s golf equipment. In 1965, he got a work permit and moved to the Carlsbad, CA, area, where he lives to this day, to work for the phone company. Soon, like his father, Vokey “became smitten with the game,” started to play competitively, and did his own club tinkering. at hobby became a passion, and in 1976 he opened Bob’s Custom Golf Shop. e rest is Bob Vokey history, and his history plus his “passion” - now called WedgeWorks - can be unveiled at www.Vokey.com. Now, here’s Voke’s latest pitch, coming right at you with his unique spin! NEGM: What have you enjoyed most about your visits to New England? BV: My daughter lives in Vermont, so I try to visit her whenever I can. I love the seasons in New England, especially fall. It reminds me of my home in Montreal. NEGM: What’s the status of your golf game? BV: Well, I’ve had two recent knee operations. I can’t swing it the way I used to. But I go out on my home course, Lake San Marcos, with my wife Gail. She loves to play. At one point I was about a two or three handicap. NEGM: What are your favorite golf courses? BV: St. Andrews, the Home of Golf. Also a course I love in Nova Scotia, e Highlands. NEGM: Who would be in your Dream Foursome? BV: My dad, Lee Trevino, and Reggie Jackson.
NEGM: What do you do in your spare time? BV: I work out religiously, on my own and with a trainer twice a week. I have a restored Corvette that I work on. And I read a lot. NEGM: How did you become the first and last name in wedges? BV: I honestly never set out to be a famous club maker. After I had moved to California and opened Bob’s Custom Golf, Lee Trevino came in and asked me to make clubs for him. In 1986, Gary Adams, a brilliant guy, had a new metal wood he was selling out of his trunk. He asked me to work for him at TaylorMade. en Gary, Harry Taylor and I started Founders Club, which we eventually sold. When I came to Titleist in 1996, my first assignment was the 975D driver. Shortly thereafter, Wally Uihlein, Acushnet CEO, asked me to work on wedges. He knew I had been making them for years. It’s been my passion ever since. Now, more than 8 million wedges later, it’s been quite a ride. NEGM: You are in the fourth generation of your BV spin-milled creations - SM4. What does “spin milled” mean? BV: Spin Milling actually refers to the process we use to make our wedges. What we do is we start by fly-cutting the face perfectly flat. en we individually cut each groove with our Spin Mill saw. is allows us to get right up against the USGA limit and tolerances. We also add a patented surface roughness to the face. e result is more spin on full and partial shots. NEGM: Which touring pros have helped you the most in your designs? BV: I’ve had so many players help me over the years. I have to start with Lee Trevino and Jose Maria Olazabal. ey were a tremendous help. We started naming grinds after the players that inspired them. For example the TK came from Tom Kite, the T came from Tom Pernice, and one of our newest grinds is the S, named after Steve Stricker. All of those guys gave me tremendous feedback which I’ve incorporated into our SM4 line. NEGM: What are the touring pros looking for in their wedges that the rest of us wouldn’t? BV: ey often play in different conditions, and most of their courses are firm and fast with tight areas

around the greens. ink Augusta. So Tour players can get away with less bounce. But for the average golfer, bounce is his friend. Most average golfers need more bounce, not less.
now there are a lot of PW’s that are 45° or 44°. So the gap wedge needs to be stronger. We recommend 50°, 54°, 58° as a good combo with no more than 5° between each wedge for proper gapping.
NEGM: Explain the importance of bounce? BV: Bounce is like the rudder on the ship. It protects you as the club goes through the turf. If you don’t have enough bounce, the club will dig, leading to inconsistent shots.
NEGM: What advice can you offer a player whose wedge game is inconsistent and frustrating? BV: Get fit by your local PGA pro! I can’t emphasize that enough. Many players just grab a wedge out of the shop and go. at’s crazy! You’re using these clubs on almost every hole! We have so many models, bounces, lofts, grinds to choose from. Properly fit wedges will make a huge difference. If you can’t find a fitter, call us at 1-888-Titleist, and we’ll find a fitter in your locale.
NEGM: If a player wants to carry two wedges besides his regular wedge, what do you recommend? BV: What we’re seeing is that PW’s are getting stronger. It used to be a PW was 48°. en it became 46°, and

Q&A With Megan Khang
by Jeff Palopoli
At only 14 years old Megan Khang has accomplished quite a bit in her very young golfing career. She qualified and tee’d it up at the U.S. Women’s Open this past July, and also won the Connecticut Women’s Open, to name just a few accomplishments. Megan plays most of her golf out of the Harmon Golf Club located in Rockland, MA. Using the facility’s many practice areas, as well as the challenging nine hole course, Megan has crafted her game to become one of the nation’s top women amateur golfers. Did I mention she’s only 14?
NEGM: You’ve had a very busy summer. What has been your most memorable event from 2012? MK: Yes, this summer was great! I was very fortunate to qualify and play in some of the biggest tournaments. But I must say the most memorable tournament was the US Women’s Open. It was an awesome experience. I got to see firsthand what it’s like to play with the best female golfers in the world. NEGM: What was your biggest take away from playing in the U.S. Women’s Open this past year? MK: I learned that you need to be very patient and that the short game is crucial. You have to be able to get up and down from anywhere. You also have to have a routine and be consistent with it. NEGM: You started playing golf at a young age, what advice would you give to other kids who may be getting started in golf? MK: Always have fun, have goals for yourself, and practice constructively. Also, always have a positive attitude. NEGM: Who or what would you say has been the biggest influence for you to get to where your game is today? MK: My dad is the biggest influence on my game. He is pretty awesome considering he is self taught. I am very lucky to have him as a father and as a teacher
because he can fix me when I am struggling with my game. Without him I would not have the success that I have today. He helps keep me focus and on track. He always tells me that I can do anything if I put my heart and soul in it. Nothing is unreachable. NEGM: You’ve been playing at the Harmon Club for quite a while, how has their facility helped to hone your skills? MK: e Harmon Golf Club is definitely a great place to practice out of. e facility has a nine holes short course and a nine holes long course which helps me work on my short game and long game. e facility also has a pitching area that I can work on my wedges and a putting green that I can practice on my putting. I especially like that I can hit ball all winter long to keep myself loose for next season. NEGM: What are your goals for looking ahead to 2013? MK: My goal for next season is to hopefully qualify for all the USGA events again and do better. I want to be able to play well in the US Women’s Open and make the cut, go deeper in match play in the US Junior Girls’, as well as the Women’s Amateur. Last but not least, finish better in the PGA Junior Championship. Overall, I’m just hoping to have another great season. Jeff Palopoli is a frequent contributor to NEGM. Satisfy Your Fall Cravings - Oxford Greens By NEGM Staff
Consistently ranked among the very best courses in Connecticut and New England since opening in 2004, e Golf Club at Oxford Greens had a busy summer. And it’s the perfect place to satisfy your golf cravings this fall before winter sets-in. Showing college and NFL games in the clubhouse each weekend, consider bringing your fellow fans to Oxford Greens for a morning of golf on the strong yet playable layout and an afternoon of catching your favorite gridiron team. e neo-classical (retro) design harkens back to the old days of New England and the golden era of golf course design. e par-72 layout features bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens, and plays from 4,982 to 7,147 yards. Winding through pristine wooded areas, natural preserves and open meadows, holes are fun yet challenging for players of all abilities. In 2012, Oxford Greens was named the No. 4 course in Connecticut by GOLF magazine and, in 2011, the No. 5 Course in the state by Golfweek and the No. 18 golf course in New England by New England Golf Monthly. “Connecticut is home to some of the most beautiful and challenging courses in America,” says Steve Landi, General Manager of Oxford Greens. “Inclusion on these lists is a tremendous honor and testament to our staff’s hard work providing exceptional customer experiences.” In May, the course hosted the Woodland Invitational
for area high schools. e 18-hole, four-man stroke-play tournament was contested among 72 golfers from 18 high schools. e competition was open to boys and girls teams and individuals. Participating schools included Ansonia, Bethel, Derby, Holy Cross (Waterbury), Lewis Mills, Naugatuck, Pomperaug, Sacred Heart (Waterbury), Seymour, St. Paul (Bristol), omaston, Wamogo, Torrington, Watertown, Weston, Wilby, Wolcott and Woodland. “We were happy to stage the event,” Landi. “e course is in customary excellent condition and provided a tough, but fair test for these high school golfers.” In mid-August, Oxford Greens was one of four Connecticut courses managed by Billy Casper Golf to host the second annual “World’s Largest Golf Outing” benefitting Wounded Warrior ProjectTM. e simultaneous golf outing at more than 100 BCGmanaged courses in 24 states attracted more than 7,800 golfers and raised more than $350,000 for WWP. Oxford Greens hosted 210 golfers in a double-shotgun and raised more than $9,300. “We were awed by the response of our loyal golfers,” says Landi. “e sacrifice of the wounded warriors in the name of our country is humbling as was the generosity of the local community.” For more information about Oxford Greens or to reserve a tee time, contact General Manager Steve Landi or Assistant General Manager Rachelle Heil: 203.888.1600, www.oxfordgreens.com.

Ross’ Rulings
Abnormal Ground Conditions by Jack Ross
You’ve probably seen the commercial where a player kicks his ball away from a rock and is shocked when Phil Mickelson appears and cites Rule 13-1: “the ball must be played as it lies.” One exception to that cardinal rule applies when your ball lies in an “abnormal ground condition,” or an abnormal ground condition interferes with your stance or swing. ere are three categories of abnormal ground conditions: casual water, ground under repair, and holes or other aberrations made by burrowing animals, reptiles, or birds. You may take relief from an abnormal ground condition by dropping your ball within one club-length of the “nearest point of relief.” (On the green, you must place the ball.) is is the closest spot that affords relief from the condition and is not nearer the hole. Keep in mind that you are not entitled to “line of play” relief – only stance and swing relief – unless your ball lies on the putting green and casual water interferes with your line of putt. In that case, the nearest point of relief may be off the green. Casual water is a temporary accumulation of water outside of a water hazard. If you take your stance and water wells up around your shoes, you are in casual water. If your ball lies in casual water in a bunker, you must drop the ball in the bunker. If the bunker is completely covered by water, you must either drop the ball at a spot which provides the most relief (shallowest area) or, at the cost of a penalty stroke, drop
the ball behind the bunker. Ground under repair is any part of the course designated as such by the course or tournament committee, usually by white lines or stakes. A hole made by a greenkeeper constitutes ground under repair even if not marked. Similarly, grass clippings or branches that are piled for removal constitute ground under repair, but such material that has been abandoned does not. For example, piles of grass clippings in wooded areas are not ground under repair. However, such material may be removed by the player as a loose impediment. e rules of golf are stringent. If your ball ends up in a rut made by a tractor or a crack in the ground during hot, dry weather, it might be reasonable to assume you are entitled to relief. However, unless the area has been marked as ground under repair, the rules do not afford you that option. While this might seem to defy common sense, allowing players broad discretion to designate areas as ground under repair would undercut uniformity. Unfortunately, not all courses are diligent about marking ground under repair. Jack Ross completed an intensive PGA/USGA rules workshop and has officiated at state amateur competitions. Rules inquiries may be directed to RossGolf@Charter.net.

Molori Unplugged by John Molori
Gorman and golf are a perfect fit
Iconic Celtics’ play-by-play announcer Mike Gorman spent his summer vacation calling Olympic handball. While the games were in London, Gorman called the action from a video monitor in New York. It was a refreshing career challenge for the veteran broadcaster, but it also took him away from his true passion, golf. “I used to play at Franklin Field,” says Gorman, a Dorchester native who now resides in upstate New York. “I also caddied at Wollaston Golf Club. (Boston Herald icon) Kevin Mannix was the caddy master. I played at Ponkapoag and in high school, but never had any instruction. I just hit the ball. In the Navy, we had some down time to play during flight training.” As the Boston Latin and Boston State graduate’s media career unfolded, golf took a backseat to his packed schedule. He eventually returned to the game and seldom passes up an opportunity to play, especially when traveling with a certain well-connected NBA head coach. “Doc (Rivers) knows everyone, so I’ll play on an off day in Phoenix or Florida. ose courses are so flat and wide open. I honestly prefer Northeast courses. Between November and April, I might get in five rounds of golf.” Like many golf purists, Gorman tends toward minimalist tastes. “I belong to Salem Golf Club in (North Salem) New York. ere are no pools and no tennis courts. It’s an old fashioned golf course. e pro shop is out of the 1950s. I like to play Weston with (Celtics co-owner) Steve Pagliuca. Honestly, in New England I’m America’s Guest. If someone invites me to play, I am there.” A self-professed range rat, this New England Basketball Hall of Famer immerses himself in the game and loves every bit of it. “I like to play by myself and with people who are serious about golf,” explains Gorman. “A lot of times, when I play with someone for the first time, they want to spend two and a half hours talking about the Celtics. I appreciate that, but I’d rather talk about why I keep hitting the ball to the right.” As for memorable golf moments, Gorman recalls an interesting pair. “I got a double eagle playing
at Metacomet in Rhode Island. It was a par 5 and I crushed a 3 wood. Playing Bethpage Black was a humbling experience. We decided to play it as it lies and hit from the back tees. I shot a 123, but really felt like I played well.” A multiple Emmy winner, Gorman has played golf with ex-Celtic Ray Allen and broadcast colleague Donny Marshall, but he generally takes a more intimate approach to the game. “Golf is very personal to me,” he explains. “When I play, all I want to do is play. “I do enjoy playing with people who are better than I am. One time at the range, there was a guy with an amazing backswing. He was hitting these beautiful 275 to 300 yard drives. You could throw a blanket over where they all landed. I love watching things like that.” Gorman’s golf bucket list includes a trip abroad and, perhaps, a seemingly natural career shift. He relates, “I went to Ireland 7 or 8 years ago to trace my family history and actually found the barn where my grandmother was born. I’d like to get back there and to Scotland. I’d also like to broadcast golf. at might be what I do in retirement.” Future plans aside, Gorman and Tommy Heinsohn will embark on their record 32nd season calling Celtics game this fall on Comcast SportsNet. So, does the duo also take their act to the golf course? Gorman responds, “Last year, on a day off in Charlotte, Tommy came to the course with me. He didn’t golf, but he rode in the cart for 18 holes eating candy bars and making jokes. It was wonderful to be with him.” Wonderful is the perfect word to describe Gorman’s uniquely understated on-air style. His current golf game is just as impressive. “I’m a better golfer today than ever. I really just love to get out on the range and hit balls. It may sound crazy, but sometimes you get in a groove at the range and it carries over to the course. I really feel like my best round ever is still ahead of me.” John Molori is the co-author of “e Cracker Jack Collection: Baseball’s Prized Players” to be released in the fall of 2013. Two Good Rounds at’s AMORE! Golf and Wine in Tuscany. by Elisa Gaudet Italy is perhaps in the forefront of most people’s minds when they think of pasta, pizza, designer clothing and cappuccino. And while Italian wines have been popular for years, it is only recently that more attention has been drawn to Italian golf. Largely fueled by the emergence of some excellent Italian players like Edoardo Molinari, Francisco Molinari and Matteo Manassero, people are definitely taking notice of Italian golfers and golf courses. In Two Good Rounds style I decided to go in search of an ultimate Italian golf experience…the combination of a great golf location and libation destination. Tuscany, specifically Saturnia, did not disappoint. Florence is home to the oldest golf course in Italy (the Florence Golf Club Ugolino founded in 1889 which offers spectacular golf) while Saturnia is four hours south travelling by car. Even though most people tend to travel to Chianti and Siena, a less traveled beautiful hidden gem can be found at Saturnia. A two hour drive north of Rome this southwestern corner of Tuscany is surrounded by iconic groves of olive trees, vineyards and medieval hilltop villages. Nestled in the valley below the ancient town of Saturnia is the Terme di Saturnia Golf & Spa Resort. As you enter down the long drive to the resort you pass the golf course on the right. e courses seamless design allows one to believe that the lush fairways were always a part of the iconic Tuscan landscape. is 18 hole golf course was designed by Ronald Fream and opened in 2007. Assistant Pro Giuseppe Sabbatino greeted us at the clubhouse, a beautiful stone building that sits atop a small hill allowing for one of the most pristine 19 hole views. Sipping a cappuccino or lemonchello tastes that much better from the clubhouse porch. e first hole is a dog leg left off an elevated tee with water running along most of the hole. You are rewarded at the green with another spectacular view that makes you realize Diane Lane’s decision to stay in Tuscany (in the movie Under the Tuscan Sun) was a logical one. e course has a mix of topography and endless views of the hills, vineyards and olive groves one associates with Tuscany. is eco-friendly championship golf course beckons you to take a walk with your sticks through the Tuscan countryside and rewards you afterwards with seductive and invigorating thermal springs. e Terme di Saturnia hotel and thermal spa is one of the premier thermal locations in Europe. e hotel does an excellent job of mixing old with new as some of the
stone structure dates back to ancient Roman times. e hotel rooms and spa are in an L shape around the natural stone hot spring pool. is is by far the main attraction and visitors are greeted as soon as they arrive by the pungent smell of sulfur. Perfectly warm to match the body’s natural temperature, 98 degrees, the hot springs flow from the natural mineral laden water arising from the deep cracks in the local hillsides. e flow of water through the hotel pool is 800 liters of water per second and has been gushing for over 3,000 years! e hotel provides all the modern conveniences one would expect from a five star hotel and the spa is state of the art with treatments that can only be found there, given the proximity to the natural spring water. ese baths were known to be used during the Roman times as soldiers would stop off after battle to relax before heading back to the capital of Rome. It is easy to understand why this incredibly therapeutic soak was as popular then as it is now. e hotel often hosts food and wine tastings on Friday evenings allowing guests to savor the local flavors. While Tuscany is known for its red wines, it was the discovery of great white wines that was surprising. e vineyards around Scansano and Pitigliano are known for producing the best white wines in Tuscany. A favorite was one from the Viognier vineyard, a white wine made from vitigno grapes. Pitigliano, a beautiful ancient town 20 minutes from the hotel, is steeped in history and has a long relationship with wine and winemaking. Here you will find an ancient cellar that has been used for over 500 years to produce and store wine. A few miles outside Pitigliano, en route back to the hotel, is a beautiful family winery called the Villa Corano vineyard. Stefano Formiconi, the patriarch of the family winery, takes great pride in his work and does an excellent job of blending tradition with technology. Villa Corano produces some delicious wines including a classic Tuscan red, Acheo. e real treat is their desert wine Gaudium (made from Malvasian grapes) that is pressed and bottled by hand in the traditional wine making tradition. Alas, these wines taste that much better savored in the back of the winery, seated at a family picnic table under the shade of huge oak tree overlooking the vineyards. It is tough not to fall in love with Saturnia as it is the perfect blend of golf and wine under the Tuscan sun. Salute!

Sampson’s Spotlight presented by GolfTrainingAids.com The Speed Whoosh by MomentusGolf.com by Greg Sampson
The Claim: e Speed Whoosh by Momentus Golf
is designed to increase your club head speed by allowing you to swing the training device at 20+ miles per hour faster than your driver because the Whoosh activates your fast twitch muscles. After swinging the Speed Whoosh your club head speed should increase 7 to 10 miles per hour producing drives 15 to 30 yards farther in the air instantly. e SW also helps with a golfers timing by placing the magnetic ball at the top near the grip and swinging so that the ball reaches the bottom at impact. All of this with a training grip built into one aid? I have consistently had a swing speed between 104 – 107 mph for years with a carry distance on average around 261 yards. Let’s see if by practicing my “whoosh” and timing with a proper grip that I will increase my miles per hour and distance that Momentus claims?
The Test: e only way for me to truly believe in the Speed Whoosh was to test it on a launch monitor
Momentus
SPEED WHOOSH
against other aids as well as against the good old turn your club upside-down and swish it drill. First I hit five drives with my driver, then swung each aid five times before I hit five drives with my driver. Each was recorded and averaged out at the end. I also performed Speed Whoosh timing drill as well. e verdict is?
The Verdict: After a full test I found the Speed Whoosh to increase my club head speed and distance very close to what Momentus claims. My average drive after five swings with the Whoosh was 273 with my longest in the air being 281. e other aids and the good old driver up side down drill didn’t even compete. I would say that this aid would benefit players with slower swing speeds as it truly teaches speed and timing through impact like no other device on the market today. You know how they say the proof is in the pudding? I would say the proof is in the Whoosh!

Let the Big Dog Eat - Drivers for Better Players Low handicap amateurs and professionals have the swings to really take advantage of the technological advances in driver materials, design and construction. ese better players generally look for one-woods without much offset, lots of adjustability and strong shafts to complement the clubhead for high ball speed and lots of control. In contrast to many recreational players, better players hardly ever put a new driver in by Ed Travis the bag without having it precisely fitted to their swings and then put it in play only after extensive testing to ensure it truly is the one that will maximize distance and allow them to produce the right drive at the right time. However, if you ask them, better players often will say one of the most important factors is how the driver looks at address. ey want a driver to inspire confidence so they can make an effective swing. Since a large portion of NEGM readers fall in the better player category, here are drivers we consider to be worth evaluating should it be time for a change and there’s one more very important point. Since it’s late in the golf year and anticipating the 2013 models being introduced, there are some very good prices on some very good drivers in both green grass shops and big box retailers. Unless you ‘gotta-have’ the latest and greatest of next season’s crop, these drivers are a good place to start your evaluation.
TaylorMade RocketBallz Tour e RocketBallz line (along with the TMaG R11S) has taken the metalwoods business by storm and a good example of why is the RocketBallz Tour driver. e white crowned clubhead was designed to appear smaller at address and succeeds and as with the non-Tour version there’s an adjustable hosel for plus or minus 1½° of loft and 3° of face angle closed or open. Players hitting it most often comment on the great launch characteristics of the Tour model with no sign of ballooning and that it produces long carrying distances. e two biggest pluses though may be this version gives the purchaser access to TMaG’s line up of high quality tour shafts and that with the stock Matrix X-Con 6 shaft the price is very competitive.
Cleveland Classic Tour A retro paint job mimicking a persimmon clubhead with brass sole plate along with a good looking pear-shape and extra deep face are very appealing as Cleveland Golf ’s entry into this category. Total weight when matched with the stock Miyazaki Kusala Black 61 oz. shaft is on the light side at 310 grams but Cleveland is known for producing balanced clubs even though they weight less than competitive drivers. eir mantra is a lighter, balanced club can achieve higher swing speeds and more distance. e Classic Tour may be used by a power player since the shaft/clubhead combination provides good golfers a chance to work the ball while producing a penetrating flight.

Adams Speedline Tech In mid-July Adams stepped up with their most adjustable driver to date, the Speedline Tech model which features their system of face adjustability up to 1° opened or closed. Additionally there’s Adams’ sixth iteration of their very good aerodynamic head design with a carbon fiber wing attached to the titanium head. According to Tim Reed vice president of R & D, “We used advanced construction methods and made refinements to driver technologies that we’ve developed over time to make this our most customizable and best performing driver for golfers of all skill levels.
Adams Speedline Fast 12 LS e FAST 12 LS has Adams’ signature Airfoil Design with three ridges on the very nice looking satin silver crown. According to company engineers the ridges result in 14% less drag and that translates to 3 miles per hour more clubhead speed. ere’s adjustability for loft (+/- 1°), lie angle (2°) and the standard length of 45" can be increased to 45.5". Swing weight is maintained via a removable weight in the back of the clubhead. Better players will like that LS stands for ‘low spin’ and the head is a more traditional shape. Justin Honea, Director of Product Development said, “Giving players the option of changing lengths as well as loft and lie gives us a competitive advantage over the rest of the industry.”

Cobra ZL Encore Cobra uses their E9 Face Technology with Dual Roll in the ZL Encore which may be purchased with a really good-looking black/electric yellow color scheme or the all white head favorite by the PGA Tour’s Ian Poulter. The choice in stock shafts is between the F1 and F3 Fujikura Motore depending on user’s preference. The 460cc clubhead has a titanium body with milled semi-forged titanium face, a carbon fiber crown and an aluminum coated E-Glass and carbon fiber sole. The ZL Encore is also adjustable featuring three face angle settings.
Yonex EZONE Yonex Golf began last year to penetrate the consciousness of American golfers after being absent from the market for a number of years. Their new EZONE series consists of the Type 450 (high launch, low to mid-spin, maximum forgiveness), the Type 420 (low spin, mid to low launch) and the Type 380 originally made specifically for Ryo Ishikawa on the PGA Tour. Yonex says the Type 380 (380cc) is “geared for the advanced player,” and therefore has a compact SP700 titanium deep faced clubhead. There’s a composite graphite crown fused to the titanium body featuring Yonex’s face design for an enlarged sweet spot. And since Yonex also makes shafts, the Type 380 comes with a stock Yonex Nanopreme 50EX shaft.

Razor Eclipse Razor Golf certainly isn’t the largest equipment company in the club business but it does have the reputation of making very high quality clubs using the latest in materials and technology. e Eclipse driver is a good example with its forged titanium face (with a very nice looking gold finish) and body coated with titanium nitride for extra hardness plus distance and control. e titanium nitride coating is a thin film deposited on the clubhead by condensation in a vacuum. e Eclipse’s 460cc head has a clean streamlined appearance at address with weight distribution for lots of forgiveness on off center hits.
Nike VR Pro Limited Edition A traditional pear shape, slightly smaller size (440cc) and lack of hosel offset give this driver a very pleasing look at address. Nike has used its NexCor face technology (a variable face thickness design) for a wide sweet spot and though the Limited Edition model is not adjustable it does have a compression channel on the sole to help shot shaping and the variety of shots better players like to hit. e clubhead is made from four forged pieces (crown, face, sole and hosel) and has a very solid feel. A big plus is the stock shaft, the Diamana ‘Ahina model which has a stiffer mid and tip section than comparable shafts.
Titleist 913D e PGA Championship wasn’t the first time the new 913D3 prototype driver had been put into play on Tour by Titleist staff players but nonetheless it was certainly impressive in the hands of winner Rory McIlroy in posting his eight shot win. Starting last June the 913D2 and 913D3 drivers were the first of Titleist’s 2013 model year clubs to see the light of day. ough technical specs and other information have not been released, the ‘better player’ model 913D3, undoubtedly will have the smaller pear shaped clubhead (445cc) as does the current 910D3 it replaces and make use of Titleist’s proprietary adjustment system. Word there’s a forged variable thickness face, a price tag of $399 and availability in early to mid-November. September2012 |Subscribe at myNEGM.com | 55

Shafted at Swifts Results with Joe Leahy
by Greg Sampson
If you ask any tour professional or club fitter they all say the same thing: a golf shaft makes all the difference! In today’s technological world of golf this couldn’t be more true. e technology in designing/manufacturing shafts, launch monitors, adjustable drivers and golf balls has made it possible to find the proper shaft, driver head and ball to fit any golfers game. On a Saturday in August, I tested over 14 different golf shafts at Swift Results driving range in Warren, RI with Joe Leahy who is one of the most respected club fitters in the New England area. We tried to keep as many constants as possible to determine which shaft was best for me. Utilizing a Flightscope launch monitor and a 9 degree TaylorMade R11s, which TaylorMade provided specifically for the test, we were able to determine which shaft best fit my game to ultimately provide me with better
accuracy and increased distance. “Every golfer has a different swing and therefore not all shafts will perform well for each individual. at is the biggest reason for a detailed fitting utilizing Flightscope technology so that we can match the perfect shaft and head combination to give a golfer the best results.” Joe Leahy – CapitalGolfRI.com Every shaft was sent to us with an R11s tip in the stiff, 60 – 65 gram category with the exception of the nVentix Nunchuck which is heavier. Flightscope e shafts from virtually launch monitor every manufacturer in golf also varied in kick point and torque. I hit five shots with each shaft. e drive was set to a degree closed to offset my tendency to have an open clubface at impact, which also added some loft to help launch the ball a bit easier.

Rory McIlroy Wins Deutsche Bank Championship by Emily Kay
Tiger Woods Brings the Buzz back To Boston
Norton, Mass. -- With the Patriots 2012 season not yet underway and the Red Sox in complete shambles as they stagger to the finish line of their worst campaign in recent history, the only playoffs Boston sports fans will enjoy this calendar year are those of the golfing variety. So when Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, and a talentrich supporting cast rolled into town for the Deutsche Bank Championship, local athletic supporters starved for post-season excitement turned out in droves to root their golfing idols on at TPC Boston. With McIlroy, who survived a rocky finish to an otherwise stellar week and hot start to his Monday, besting Louie Oosthuizen by a stroke and Woods by two, it’s safe to say folks like Massachusetts resident Mark Newell were not disappointed. “is is fun. e players are great, they’re all accommodating. It just seems they enjoy us being out here with them,” Newell, an 11-handicapper from the Ayer/Littleton area, told us on ursday. Newell got up at 4 a.m. that day and made the hour-plus drive south so he could enjoy a little up-close-and-personal time
with some of golf’s biggest names taking part in the pretourney pro-am. “Just the fact that Tiger’s in the field makes a big difference, getting the people out here,” Newell said. And just how do you know Tiger’s in town again after he failed to qualify for a trip to the Bay State in 2011? How about the backup of pedestrians slowed to a standstill between holes, making Labor Day vacationers stacked up on the Cape bridges look like a NASCAR race? Or the 20-deep throngs of spectators lining the ropes, hoping for just a glimpse of one of Woods’ famous stingers and shouting his name at the tops of their lungs? One young man enjoying the late-summer sunshine from the bleachers overlooking the first hole as he waited for Woods to tee off in Monday’s finale took home golf’s equivalent of a foul ball into the stands. Before nailing a peg into the turf, Woods turned around and tossed one of his Nike One Tour Ds to Rodney Mitchell, visiting from Leeds, Ala. “I’ve been following Tiger around all week, telling him to play good golf and making him laugh,” Mitchell said.

As for the rest of the tourney - Boston’s new Fall Classic - McIlroy began his final round three shots back of Oosthuizen, made that up within five holes, and overcame uncharacteristically sloppy play down the stretch to card a 4-under 67 and join Woods as the only three-time winners on the PGA Tour this year. Oosthuizen just missed sending the contest into its second straight overtime (Webb Simpson defeated Chez Reavie in the 2011 edition) when he missed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th. Woods, who two-putted for birdie on the 18th for a 66, put himself into contention with four birdies on the front nine. All pars and the lone birdie on the back, however, were not enough to overtake a scuffling McIlroy, who chunked a couple of shots, including a tee shot that carried just 170 yards, hit some errant iron shots, and hacked a couple around the greens. "Had a couple wobbles there coming in, but did enough in the early part of the round to have enough of a cushion to get the job done,” said McIlroy, who vaulted into the lead in the FedEx Cup points standings as well as the discussion for player of the year. Despite his late-game missteps, and Woods becoming the first golfer in history to earn $100 million after his third-place finish netted him $544,000, McIlroy bolstered the argument of those who believe
the 23-year-old two-time major champ is the best of the best. "He's not No. 1 in the world for nothing," said Oosthuizen, who had a front-row seat for McIlroy’s victory. "He's a great young talent, a lot of majors left for him to win. He's such a cool kid...on the course. It's great playing with him. He makes tough shots look really sometimes, especially long irons....He did what he had to do." Other notables included Phil Mickelson, who had a final-round 66 and notched his best finish (T4) since the Masters, in which he shared third place. Local hero Keegan Bradley made the most of his second chance after making the cut on the number (2over) on Saturday. e New England native added a 69 on Monday to the 63 he carded on Sunday to end at 8-under and in a tie for 13th. e four-day tourney may have been only the second leg of the four-game FedEx Cup series, but as one golfing enthusiast stuck in one of the many foottraffic jams on Monday noted, Labor Day at TPC Boston had “the feel of a major championship.” Emily Kay is a regular contributor to New England Golf Monthly. Golf by the Numbers
Behind the Scenes at the Deutsche Bank Championship by Jim Hammond
If you have ever attended a PGA Tour golf tournament you may have noticed volunteers stationed on each hole who are busily engaged in surveying the fairways. ese dedicated and unpaid golf fans are a specially trained group who are responsible for gathering player statistics. is system is known as ShotLink. PGA Tour Matt Toenjes, who is the Tour operation coordinator for ShotLink and spends 200 days a year on the road, took me behind the scenes of the operation at the 2012 Deutsche Bank Golf Tournament. 350 tournament volunteers are required to attend a formal training session where they learn how to operate the laser guided equipment that is the backbone of the ShotLink program. On Pro-Am day two volunteers will be assigned approximately 300 yards from the tee box on each hole. A laser viewer, look-
ing very much like the hand-held distance finder that you can buy in any golf shop, is attached to a pole. e yardages of each fairway are measured from various points on each hole and stored in the system. When a player hits his tee shot and his ball comes to rest one of the volunteers peers through the scope and “shoots” the yardage. A second volunteer is part of the team and he uses a scale drawing of the hole and marks the approximate location of the ball. e drawing has a grid and each box formed by the grid is equal to five yards. Both measurements are checked to be sure the information entered into the system is accurate. In back of each green is a tower where two more volunteers are stationed. A bright orange laser is used to shoot the distances from the ball to the hole. When the player completes the hole a great deal of information has been registered, including length of drive, distance from a ball resting in the fairway, length of putts made and so much more. Matt brought me into the ShotLink trailer where all the information is fed into the computers and in a fraction of a second the information is made avail-

able to TV broadcasters doing the live commentary. ere is a large room where three people are watching a live broadcast and monitoring the information. One screen is crammed with numbers that are constantly changing. If a red number shows up one of the people in the trailer will contact the volunteers and remedy any problems. “ey will be in here 12 hours a day keeping an eye on all the screens and statistics.” said Matt. With each group of players a walking scorer has a laser unit and taps the screen to register each shot made by each player on every hole. is information goes to the trailer and in a matter of seconds the information is flashed on the scoreboards on the course. You will see the length of Tiger’s birdie putt. It can also tell you how many birdie putts he has made from that distance in the past year. Other numbers may give longest birdie putt of the day or closest to the pin.
If you were to sneak a peek in a media tent you would see dozens of golf writers pounding out the stories of the day on their computers. Next to their desks are a number of computers provided by ShotLink. When writing a story I can immediately access information like how far Tiger hit a drive on any hole. What players shot rounds today that were under par and how do they rank when compared to other Tour players. e pros are the ones who benefit from this information. ey may think that they putt well from 20 feet but the stats may prove otherwise. e players and their coaches will analyze the information and determine the weak parts of a player’s game that need to be addressed. With over 500 different categories of statistics available from ShotLink there is a lot of information that can be scrutinized.

Palopoli’s Picks 2012 Ryder Cup Preview Which side are you on? by Jeff Palopoli
On September 28th the 39th Ryder Cup matches get underway at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, IL. Every two years, golf fans from around the world are on the edge of their seats for three days straight, watching USA’s top players take on their counterparts from Europe. It’s typically a high emotion and high drama filled event. In 2010 USA lost to Europe by a single point, with the outcome being decided on the final singles match of the day. Team USA has only won the Ryder Cup once since the historic and memorable 1999 matches at e Country Club in Brookline, MA. I was lucky enough to have been able to attend the final day of those matches and witnessed the Americans rallying from a four point deficit to beat the Europeans 141/2 to 13 1/2, the largest come-from-behind victory in Ryder Cup history. e way the team celebrated on the 17th green was heavily criticized and seems to have only fueled the bad blood for future matches. e 1999 Ryder Cup was also one of the last public appearances of Payne Stewart, who died in a tragic plane crash just a few short weeks later. is year’s matches seem poised for some very exciting golf. Rory McIlroy has firmly planted his name atop the world rankings, and I don’t think there’s a single person on the planet that wouldn’t love to see he and Tiger Woods going head to head during the Sunday singles matches. Team USA Captain Davis Love III recently had a
very difficult decision on his hands in selecting his four Captain’s Picks. Conceivably, there were seven very good options with only four spots available. Ultimately Love III went with Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk, and Steve Stricker. In my opinion those were the right choices. Medinah Country Club favors long hitters, which helped to make the case for Dustin Johnson, who is also playing exceptional golf leading up to the event. Brandt Snedeker, while a Ryder Cup rookie, is also riding a hot hand coming off of a 2nd place finish at e Barclays, as well as a solo 6th at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Snedeker is also one of the best putters in the game, ranking 1st in the very important “strokes gained – putting” category. Both Furyk and Stricker are Ryder Cup veterans, and both also pair very well with Tiger Woods for the Fourball and Foursome matches. New England native Keegan Bradley earned his way on to the team by finishing 4th in the points ranking, and will join Snedeker as another Ryder Cup rookie on the USA squad. Look for Bradley to bring his usual on-the-course intensity to all of his matches, which will definitely be fun to watch. Whichever side you ultimately route for, the 2012 Ryder Cup is sure to bring plenty of excitement over the course of three days in September. Go Team USA! Colin Brennan, Megan Khang, Andy Congdon and James Patterson All Celebrate Recent 2012 Regional Events Victories
Norton, MA - With the fall quickly approaching, there were several Regional Events that were held at courses located across the state. Stealing headlines once again was Colin Brennan (Indian Ridge CC), who has been dazzling all season long. e senior at Johnson & Wales University (FL) is back at school now and many are happy to see him go after he followed up his 2012 North Shore Amateur Golf Tournament win with a huge victory at the 2012 Tarlow Invitational held at orny Lea Golf Club (see story below). Although not figured into the 2012 Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year points standing, it is
important to note that 14-year-old phenom Megan Khang (South Shore CC) set four tournament records en route to winning the 2012 Tarlow Invitational women's division by 20 strokes over second-place finisher Kristen Macdonald (omson CC). In addition, Andy Congdon (Wyantenuck CC) - the 2011 George M. Cohen MGA Senior Player of the Year - won the 2012 Berkshire Hills Singles Invitational in July at Berkshire Hills Country Club, while James Patterson (Worthington GC) was victorious at the 2012 Western Mass Amateur Championship held at Elmcrest Country Club.

Gorman vs. Geary by Tom Gorman and Tim Geary
Has The PGA TOUR Turned into Tiger TV? by Tom Gorman
For a fleeting nano-second the thought occurred to me that that grizzled airhead - Tim Geary - might actually win a debate on whether televised golf is focused exclusively on Tiger Woods. e thought scared me until realizing even a third-grader could put together a logical, fact-based argument better than Gullible Geary! Before listening to the Gullible One’s fist-bumping and chest-thumping blabber on this topic, only a contrarian fool would argue Tiger doesn’t get enough air time. So I’ll take a pass and let Geary enjoy his first victory in four years. His record now stands an unimpressive 1 for 47! Tuning in to the final round of the Deutsche Bank Championship on NBC on Labor Day I knew this debate was over before it started. Louis Oosthuizen held a three-stroke lead over Rory McIlroy with Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods six shots back. In Johnny Miller’s two-minute opening comments, he used Tiger Woods’ name a whopping 11 times. It was a preview of how Woods would dominate the TV coverage even though he never got within three of the leader. Woods blitzed the front nine in 4-under and NBC showed all 31 shots. He ended the day at 5-under 66, to finish third. Care to guess how many of those shots NBC televised? Would you believe 60? In comparison, his playing partner Dustin Johnson shot 70 and had very little air time while finishing tied for fourth with Phil Mickelson. Phil tied for low round of the day with 66 and also had limited TV exposure, mostly due to McIlroy and Oosthuizen’s dramatic battle throughout the day. Watching Tiger Woods play golf live on TV over the past dozen years draws huge interest from golf fans, casual fans and non-golfers. When Woods competes on any given Sunday afternoon two things are certain: He will wear his trademark red shirt and people will watch
causing TV ratings to soar. The fact is undisputed that Tiger Woods is an unprecedented marketing money-machine making TV sponsors happy, as well as his stable of corporate sponsors like Nike Golf, Rolex, Net Jets and EA Sports. Over Labor Day weekend he earned $544,000 to push his career earnings to more than $100 million. Woods is the first $100 million man on the PGA Tour, more than $30 million ahead of Phil Mickelson with $66 million. Folks, here’s some unsolicited advice. Put a set of golf clubs in your kids’ hands. It’s the game of a lifetime, where time and money invested in an early age can return huge dividends. rough Labor Day, Woods has won three tournaments this year tallying 74 in his career, second behind career leader Sam Snead with 82. He has cashed 38 checks with a first prize over $1 million. e top 100 players teed up at the Deutsche Bank Championship in pursuit of the FedEx Cup offering an $8 million purse. Woods came out smoking in round one, shooting 7-under 64, and then followed that up with two 68’s. is year’s Deutsche Bank Championship was the highest-rated and most- watched early rounds on cable ever. Round two viewership was up 84% over round two from 2010, the last time Woods played in the event. e Golf Channel and NBC reported a 67% increase in viewers from 2011. Even a third grader can figure out this is not a coincidence. Tiger Woods’ popularity is back in full throttle and fans want to watch him more than ever. Even when he is not winning, he is dominating the telecast and that will not change anytime soon. Tom Gorman loves to watch live golf on TV and is scheduled to audition as a guest in an upcoming TV show called America’s Got No Talent!

Has The PGA TOUR Turned into Tiger TV? by Tim Geary
I, like many viewers, was watching the PGA Championship when coverage switched to Tiger Woods, about to hit his approach shot. e ball landed some 40 feet from the hole. en the camera panned back down the fairway to where Rory McIlroy was preparing to hit. His shot was a little closer to the flag stick than Woods, but it could only be described as “ordinary”. As both balls were landing you couldn’t help but to see another, sitting just three feet away from the hole. No mention of it from any commentator, no replay of the shot that resulted in the ball being that close. Why? Well, because Zach Johnson hit it and outside of Iowa, nobody cares if Zach Johnson hits a good shot. People don’t tune in to see the Zach Johnsons, Luke Donalds or Bob Estes of the world. ey want rock stars, or at least that’s what the folks who own the networks think. You may get to see more balanced coverage on “Golf Channel” but you can forget about it if the tournament is being aired on NBC, CBS or ABC/ESPN. It’s all about ratings. e guy with the red shirt is who drives the ratings. If you don’t know who the guy with the red shirt is then why are you reading a golf magazine? Even Gorman knows who the guy with the red shirt is, and what Gorman knows can safely be placed inside a thimble with plenty of room left over. So, the question for this month? Is it really the PGA Tour or the Tiger Woods Tour? Officially it’s still Tim Finchem’s fiefdom. You need to finish in the top 125 to keep your playing privileges. If you play better than other people you get more money, at least the official kind. It’s the free market system at its best. Except for this: Tiger Woods is the reason people watch. Tiger’s warm up on the range gets more coverage than Heath Slocum rattling off seven birdies
in succession. If coverage switches to somebody like Scott Piercy (who?) you know it’s on tape and you know it’s something spectacular, like a hole-in-one, a hole out from the fairway or a 60-foot eagle putt that falls. Much of T.V.’s coverage is of Tiger standing in the fairway, his legs crossed, throwing grass into the air. Meanwhile you can hear one of his playing partners hitting their shot (thwaak!) and no comment or visual sighting of where the ball ends up. Rory, of course, is going to get a lion’s share of the coverage because at the moment he’s the crown prince of golf, the way Sergio was a decade ago. And those on the first page of the leaderboard of any tournament will be given “reluctant” coverage because it’s necessary. But aside from a few stars T.V. largely chooses to ignore the majority of the field and with good reason. e average sports fan tunes in a golf tournament to see Tiger and to a lesser extent Rory, Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler (mainly to see what outrageous color scheme he’s wearing), etc. Paine Stewart was a world class player, who nobody knew much about until he decided to start wearing knickers and the Ben Hogan style cap. Caterpillar to butterfly. Stewart’s golf was always great, but he was just another invisible touring pro. It’s all as about image and swag as it is about great golf. Tiger can be 10 shots off the lead, completely out of contention and yet almost every shot he attempts is at least recorded to be shown later. Tiger & the stars. It’s all about ratings. Golf? Just the back ground noise. Tim Geary is a R.I. based freelance writer. He once appeared during T.V. coverage of a tournament. Nobody noticed.
