The brilliance of summer has arrived, and like a trusted friend, we’re reminded of its inherent yet irreplaceable value. With the delivery of subtle comforts, the necessity to reflect and create a personal inventory is exemplified by the visceral confirmation that ‘it feels right.’

Reminiscent of taking a deep breath of ocean air in the early morning—still and crisp, the sun gently appears above the horizon, framed by the co-joining the sea’s momentum and a sparkling glaze across incoming waves as they grace the shoreline of a desolate beach extending miles in both directions; instilled, is a deep sense of satisfaction of knowing ‘everything is going to be okay.’

The magical experiences of summer allow us to gain insight and acceptance that time away from careers and personal responsibilities is essential, and in doing so, it shouldn’t be considered a luxury or extravagant expense of hard-earned assets, of both time and finances.

Even the devoted realize that maintaining the rigors of achievement must be supported by attendance to physical and emotional well-being and acknowledge the expense for departure from routine is a small allowance paid for the rewards of relaxation, recharging, and discovery, the essential elements of our lives and relationships.

It’s time to depart on an adventure, to create a plan of exploration of new places and people beyond our comfort, at the same time, to eliminate judgments and forced expectations upon ourselves and others, to take a new path towards new destinations and experiences.

Today is the beginning of renewal and profound experiment, a new approach to lifestyle, and a fresh vision of the future— welcome aboard and enjoy the ride. H

THE PINE ISLAND PROPERTY HAS DEEDED RIGHTS AND ACCESS TO THE WATERS OF BUZZARDS BAY BY WAY OF PICO BEACH ROAD.

THE John Dexter II House

THE METICULOUSLY REHABILITATED HOME WAS COMPLETELY RENOVATED, WITH EXPANSIONS MADE TO THE HOUSE AND BARN (1843) WHILE PRESERVING MANY HISTORIC DETAILS AND ITS ORIGINAL ARCHITECTURE.

Afascinating history makes 24 Pine Island Road in Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, a one-of-a-kind home. And although some buyers may not consider the unique charm and significance, such a thoughtfully renovated and updated dwelling offers, a close look at this property instills comfort with an eye towards all of the necessities and contemporary luxuries for enjoying today’s active and evolving lifestyle.

Best of all, the opportunity to add one’s self to the historic property’s legacy can be quite an honor!

The story of The Dexter family isn’t cultivated from folklore but instead researched and confirmed by the Mattapoisett Historical Commission, evident by a marker placed on the home: “Built 1843.” Such a prestigious acknowledgment is similar to an award for the effort of previous owners and their commitment to preservation.

As one of the first families of the original settlers to discover Mattapoisett, an area that was part of the large land mass known as Rochester, in 1679, the Dexters lived in a dwelling across the street from this property. Since the initial landing of the family at the now summer resort community, ‘The John Dexter II House’ continued to be owned by descendants of the family for four generations until the most recent owner took over—they then became the first ‘outsiders’ to take ownership in more than 180+ years.

In 1816, John Dexter II was born; his trade was shipbuilding, for which Mattapoisett is famous; he remained a craftsman throughout his life. At some Point he inherited the land and its outbuildings due to a family tragedy when his father and uncle were killed trying to catch the runaway sloop ‘Betsey’ from nearby Wareham, which had been anchored in Mattapoisett Harbor during a cold and miserable ice storm. The details of the failed rescue were passed down for close to two centuries, claiming the elder Dexter and his brother were found frozen in a skiff in East Chop, Martha’s Vineyard.

Just as interesting a story is the effort that went into the restoration and modifications to meet modern standards of comfort at 24 Pine Island Road.

The meticulously rehabilitated home was completely renovated, with expansions made to the house and barn (1843) while preserving many historic details and its original architecture; the work was awarded to Costello Builders in 2015/2016.

Boasting significant living space, 3,368+ square-feet, it offers an open concept layout, with a gourmet kitchen (Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances), a great room with a working fireplace, as well as traditional living and dining rooms, both with decorative fireplaces keeping with its authentic appeal. The first level includes a bedroom, one of four, and 3.5 baths, two of which are en suite.

Improvements and refinements include a high-efficiency HVAC system with a Rinnai boiler and a commercial-grade dehumidifier in the basement for climate control.

Other compelling features adding to the home’s charm are custom millwork, reclaimed wooden plank floors from Cataumet, 800 Series Anderson Architectural Windows in keeping with the original design of the house, and a stunning new roof that accentuates its form and function.

Significant work has gone into the barn, which possesses a richness and ambiance. The structure was elevated, a poured cement floor was added, and a new roof, shingles, and interior steel reinforcements made for a secure and everlasting structure.

The barn now functions as a garage with working doors. It has been expanded to include a second-level 528 square-foot bonus room with spectacular beauty and grace, in part due to the addition of persimmon wood from Indiana.

But, there’s significantly more to enjoy throughout the year; the over one-half-acre corner property has outdoor living spaces complimented by a large mahogany deck with a pergola and a custom awning, bluestone and Mattapoisett ‘pink granite’ sitting area, a six-person hot tub, and an outdoor shower.

To ensure self-sufficiency, the home includes a ‘whole house’ generator and irrigation system sourced with private well water and a filtration system.

Beyond this, the Pine Island property has deeded rights and access to the waters of Buzzards Bay by way of Pico Beach Road.

This highly desirable home and location is listed by Margo Feeney Kalkanis, and is offered at $2,175,000; it is a ‘must see’ in-person experience for a discerning home buyer. H

It’s Summer—

DON’T

BLINK,

OR YOU’LL MISS IT!

As we launch into a brief but most favored season of the year, millions of vacationers and summer residents are flocking to the highly desirable resort communities in and around New England.

With fervor, they plan with precision the days and weeks they’ll join the legions of travelers embarking on journeys of phenomenal experiences and adventures at island locations that offer rich historical context, unparalleled beauty, and, in some cases, the option of outlandish luxury or a Bohemian-type of escape.

Those familiar with these popular destinations are never complacent when it’s time to book reservations for accommodations and fine dining because missing the narrow window of opportunity to indulge at premier resorts and restaurants can’t be taken lightly. Even delaying an hour or two of making a decision could yield disappointment. From experience, the thought of an over-

sold ferry or flight, even worse, scrolling through messages announcing ‘No Vacancies’ is too painful to endure. The idea of having to wait an entire year to reset and plan again is nothing less than excruciating.

If you’re captivated by the thought of island-hopping, you’re going to appreciate our short list of the most alluring destinations within reach. These spectacular choices will amaze and satisfy the most particular critics, but regardless of your length of stay, undoubtedly, it won’t feel long enough. To address this dilemma, we offer the following advice: embark on a whirlwind vacation by planning to include all of them into your summer schedule; it’s the most efficient and very desirable means to become wrapped in the thrill of traveling within this elite circle.

Sure, your head will be in the clouds, and packing/ repacking will become a hobby, but the relief from life’s stress and anxiety is the best ROI available.

Send us a postcard—or two; we’d love to hear your story. H

Cuttyhunk

“A hidden gem nestled amongst the Elizabeth Islands, between the New Bedford Seaport and Martha’s Vineyard, Cuttyhunk is a haven for those seeking serenity and the camaraderie of likeminded guests. Time slows to the point most use the sun as a guide—when it matters.”

If you’re looking for a summer escape sans a flashy resort-type atmosphere and more of a place to unplug and reconnect with nature’s rhythm, ‘The Rock,’ as it’s known, should be on your list.

A hidden gem nestled amongst the Elizabeth Islands, between the New Bedford Seaport and Martha’s Vineyard, Cuttyhunk is a haven for those seeking serenity and the camaraderie of likeminded guests. Time slows to the point most use the sun as a guide—when it matters. And, as far as cell phones are concerned, you can’t count on them; there’s barely a signal. As for the island’s dress code, it’s simple: wear what you arrive in—for as long as you’re there.

Cars are scarce, replaced by bicycles and golf carts rolling along sandy paths, uttering a muffled whine.

On most mornings, you’ll wake to the symphony of gulls and the sound of crashing waves at Barge’s Beach.

The rest of the days will be spent hiking trails along the island’s dramatic coastline, picking up driftwood, or venturing to the old Cuttyhunk Fishing Club to enjoy the magnificent unobstructed views of the Sound and Gay Head Light. For an authentic island experience, plan to reserve a charter boat located at the main dock (where, if you want to be social, you congregate) and fish for whale-size bass or tough-as-nails bluefish; you’ll never enjoy a fresher meal!

There’s plenty of history on the island; explore abandoned WWII bunkers, visit the museum, or purchase a few books specific to the island before you leave; they’ll keep you interested while you sunbathe and watch boat traffic navigate the narrow harbor entrance.

Evenings are for watching fiery sunsets paint the sky, followed by stargazing under a canopy unblemished by extraneous lighting. Of course, no visit to Cuttyhunk is complete without a stroll to the beach for an evening bonfire or jump from the pier as the Cuttyhunk Ferry departs—it’s tradition.

Speaking of transportation, the ferry departs daily from New Bedford, Massachusetts, but you’ll need a reservation. The hour-long journey is a chance to soak in the salty air and watch lively dolphins play escort to the ship while seals perched upon the shoals serve as sentinels observing new arrivals. Alternatively, for the more seasoned sailor, private vessels can navigate the calm waters of Buzzards Bay and layover in Cuttyhunk’s protective harbor.

Cuttyhunk is reserved for travelers seeking an alternative path; it’s a paradise of renewed spirit and self-awareness for travelers yearning for simplicity. The island’s soundtrack is of the wind’s whisper, with the worries of the mainland falling away like grains of sand beneath your toes. H

DESTINATION ONLY Nantucket

“Witnessing exquisite taste everywhere you gaze is satisfying, as are the mosaics of weathered shingled cottages and vibrant flower boxes overflowing with blooms. The adoration of cobblestones, bicycles, yachts, and delightful beaches unfolds the island’s charm.”

The reflection of sapphire off the ocean, a mirage coming into view, in combination with haute anticipation stirring within, the harmony of these senses devolves all inhibitions; it’s the essence of a perfect vacation.

Nantucket has often been called the closest—far at sea—destination for a reason; upon touching land, you become emotionally detached from the ordinary and concerns you left on shore.

It’s been said by some that there’s a sense of superciliousness permeating the island; however, the prevailing attitude is more of a beachy sophistication, but don’t worry, it burns off quickly with a noon sun. In truth, it is one of the most friendly and polite resort communities we’ve enjoyed visiting. Upon your arrival, you can expect neighborly interactions with strangers, sometimes creating long-lasting friendships.

Witnessing exquisite taste everywhere you gaze is satisfying, as are the mosaics of weathered shingled cottages and vibrant flower boxes overflowing with blooms. The adoration of cobblestones, bicycles, yachts, and delightful beaches unfolds the island’s charm. Walking through the center of town leads to luxurious treasures: art galleries, antique shops, the famed Murry’s Toggery—a must-stop for your ‘Nantucket Red’ fashion, dessert shops, cafes, and the ‘Boat Basin’ with a collection of mega yachts secured at the piers, gently swaying to the flow of the tide.

Once you’ve completed shopping at the most incredible boutiques ever to be found, you’ll want to plan a few outings on the south side of Nantucket. The beaches are a revelation; in particular, Sconset, with its sugar-soft sand and pastel-colored cottages; it’s a place that has to be experienced, it’s beyond imagination.

Dining is as incredible as one would expect; the quality and service are remarkable, and there is a wide variety of choices. Without question, early reservation for dinner at the more popular restaurants is advised. A favorite of ours is Lola 41°, across from the White Elephant Hotel & Resort; you won’t be disappointed.

The island’s nightlife, albeit less ambitious than Newport or the Hamptons attracts lively crowds; check out The Chicken Box, The Gaslight, Club Car, or the Rose & Crown. You never know who you’ll meet. Upscale and inviting, everyone feels welcomed and will talk about their trip into the winter. There’s still availability for an array of accommodations, although the higher-end rooms and suites are the first to go; don’t delay.

As for traveling to Nantucket, there’s ferry service from multiple mainland locations, but unless you made your reservation for a car last year, plan on booking a rental or riding a bike. As for flying, it’s fast and convenient but subject to weather conditions, which can cause varying degrees of difficulty. H

DESTINATION ONLY Newport

“The ‘City by the Sea’ glitters during the summer; if not from the gilding decorating Newport’s historic Mansions or the refraction of light from stunning diamond rings and necklaces found in the windows of shops lining Bellevue Avenue, then it must be the beautiful people and their inclination and posh taste in automobiles, yachts, clothing, and events; consider it a show within a show.”

Newport by day and Newport by night are different but equally enjoyable.

The ‘City by the Sea’ glitters during the summer; if not from the gilding decorating Newport’s historic Mansions or the refraction of light from stunning diamond rings and necklaces found in the windows of shops lining Bellevue Avenue, then it must be the beautiful people and their inclination and posh taste in automobiles, yachts, clothing, and events; consider it a show within a show.

The grandeur is palpable, Newport is a stage, vacationers and those summering are the stars. It attracts celebrities, industry leaders, and the wealthy; it also hosts millions of tourists and vacationers because they not only approve of displays of privilege, splendor, and prosperity, much like it was during the Gilded Age (1870 into the late 1890s), they love it!

‘Upscale’ isn’t an accurate descriptor of the Newport lifestyle; it’s the area’s lifeblood, and with it comes all of the most desirable luxuries and amenities society yearns to plan around: gowns, jewels, fine dining, sailing, tennis, polo, parties, wine, women (and men), and song.

The smallest state in the Union offers large-scale events and attractions that include The International Tennis Hall of Fame, the world-renowned Cliff Walk, the Preservation Society’s annual Newport Flower Show (followed by) the Newport Mansions Wine & Food Festival, world-class sailboat racing, plus every other form of entertainment. At the same time, behind the scenes, socialites are planning galas and gatherings for the influx of summer residents—it’s non-stop partying.

Champagne flows like the bursting of a summer shower, air kisses fill the atmosphere, and from the smiles on everyone’s face, seasonal pleasures can be summed up as summer camp for adults; it’s a playground for the wealthy and those climbing.

The views are breathtaking, the pace relaxed but exciting; it’s a short season, forcing everyone to fill their diaries with important dates, making every day a weekend. The mood is intoxicating and addictive, and while you might try to pull away, it keeps drawing you back, so you follow.

Newport is a stunning place to visit, and as night falls, the party heats up, and music blasts from packed clubs lining Thames Street down to the wharves. If you didn’t know better, you’d think there was a model convention in town. Cadres of women dressed to impress fill the dance floors, singing and drinking like it’s their last night of shore leave, forcing eager men to squeeze into these venues (excuse the expression) to shoot fish in a barrel.

The island sizzles and that’s why Newport ranks high on everyone’s list for a summer vacation. Easy to get to, offering pleasurable stays, it’s known for creating unimaginable stories you may not want to share. Something to remember during your visit: “What goes on in Newport, gets around Newport, and beyond.”

Have fun! H

Long Island

“Sag Harbor, the Hamptons Montauk, and other quaint hamlets lining the southern shoreline of Long Island’s East End are known to be magical; ask anyone how they feel about the tony landfalls, as well as the natural beauty and solace found on the other coast, affectionately known as the North Folk. They’ll tell you it’s “The Vibe.”

There is only one Long Island (excuse the repetitiveness), leaving none to be compared to its beauty and unquestionable enigma. Its exalted status is a blessing for not having a competitor, for if there were ‘two’ resorts of such esteemed caliber, admirers would be torn, causing distress and heightened emotions similar to having two lovers; the result would end up as an unsatisfied thirst to be exclusive to a single paramour.

Its vacation and holiday popularity, plus the ability to lead in headlines across all forms of media, “Sag Harbor, the Hamptons, Montauk, and other quaint hamlets lining the southern shoreline of Long Island’s East End are known to be magical; ask anyone how they feel about the tony landfalls, as well as the natural beauty and solace found on the other coast, affectionately known as the North Folk. They’ll tell you it’s “The Vibe.”

Whether it’s an aura or vibe, those who love Long Island understand its mystical power, which is palpable. The feeling and attitude we speak of are what attract millions to the strip of land surrounded by the ocean.

An hour-twenty-minute ferry ride from New London or Bridgeport, Connecticut, or a less than 60-minute chopper ride from New York City delivers guests to a culmination of cultural diversity, activities, and a vast assortment of landscapes. The complement of people coming together to share a profound reverence for an environment and lifestyle is unduplicated and exceedingly satisfying.

Long Island boasts ambiance to the highest degree: sprawling estates, celebrities, the rich and famous, and over-the-top affluence with a hefty price tag, paints an image of success equal to scale of other global destinations. It’s the ‘prettiest sister’ of resort communities.

Many of the non-visiting public erroneously group the entire island into a misnomer of questionable or nefarious activities taking place far from the pristine beaches, vineyards, and farms; they fail to recognize the areas attracting summer visitors are more nuanced, they are the crown jewel of perfect vacations.

It’s not complicated to understand the allure of Long Island beaches; the ocean and its waves attract surfers and swimmers to the soft sands. Stretching for miles, it challenges you to walk as far as the shoreline extends, often beyond human sight; it’s an enchanting and soulful experience.

The tapestry of experiences is unduplicated: galleries, boutiques, dining that meet the rigors of Michelin, world-famous vineyards, and farm stands that offer produce, pies, and every other conceivable product with unprecedented quality and refinement isn’t easy to put into words.

To develop a taste for Long Island is not based on prerequisites or expectations; instead, it’s like being captured and drenched with favor and appreciation. It should be added as the ‘8th’ Wonder of the World.

A major attraction to the Hamptons and East End is the vibrant nightlife. The beat is an extension of the crowd who prioritizes their time and resources; they understand that life must be intertwined with celebration, and that is how those of us who know Long Island would best describe the experience.

Long Island needs to be on the top of everyone’s list this summer— it’s beyond cool. H

The Dynamics of Relationships

SELF-PRESERVATION OR SELFISHNESS?

During the last few years, it seems that mental wellness or a need for therapy focused on early trauma and its devastating impact on adult relationships were the primary concerns of those playing the field.

More recently, a few social scientists have concluded there’s been a noticeable shift from the hookingup culture to more ‘connected’ and meaningful romantic partnerships.

However, at the same time, there’s been a divide between those researching human relationships and what single people who are actively hunting for intimacy will tell you outside the laboratory.

Notably, a study found in the Journal of Experimental Psychology discovered a questionable trend among those seeking a compatible mate. It seems women report they place greater value on a potential suitor who offers safety, comfort, and financial security “over materialistic qualities.” They also say men who share their feelings are highly appealing.

While the study’s results appear gracious and kind, oddly, such sincerity happens to be contrary to what ‘pop culture’ tells us or those on the front lines.

If you were to interview those engaged in social media, dating sites, or searching the bar scene hoping to land a love connection (as we did), you’d learn that dating is not so cheery.

During an impromptu interview with a 30-something African-American male, who says he’s in the prime of his dating years, had this to say. “I go out all the time, and the ‘chicks’ are everywhere—there’s so many. But, hell, they’re all gold-diggers and looking to go up ‘til they find a rich enough one.”

Surprised by this response, we went on to ask what he believed women want most from a relationship; with a laugh and his head shaking left to right, he let out an unedited narrative to the effect, “Are you kidding me man: these (expletives) want your money— that’s it. They’ll cheat, ghost, and keep you hangin’ ‘til something better comes around!”

The drastic dichotomy extracted from the two points of view is, at best—absurd. The contradiction between the scientific findings, likely a self-report survey under controlled conditions suggesting an emotional and caring profile of what women claim they desire from a relationship, is vastly different from a man in the arena who feels like he is a combatant against calculated greed, social climbing and lack of serious emotional connections has experienced.

We’ve reported on this topic before, and still today, women— and men seem to be raising the bar in their selection for romantic partners.

One cannot escape the threads of social media filled with postings of what single people desire—lengthy and unattainable checklists describe the ‘must haves’ or ‘profiles’ of the person they find acceptable. And if they don’t meet their target immediately, for the most part, they continue to search until they satisfy their objective.

Meanwhile, time waits for no one, causing a large group of aging singles who have become discouraged, deciding to “give up” looking for their ‘dreamboat’ or ‘white knight.’

What everyone seems to be looking for is an ideal rather than an equivalent. And even though some candidates meet the profile, it’s not the norm. Given these odds, about 5 percent of one gender is chasing the other 5 percent, leaving everyone else to settle for a less-than-desirable match. As for those who will never be wholly satisfied ending up with a second-tier finalist, in the back of their minds, having been left with a placeholder allows them the justification to keep their options open throughout the relationship.

Looking over dozens of polling data reports, here are some other facts to consider:

n A large proportion of both men and women are utilizing dating sites, stating varying success; interestingly, there’s a nearly 10 percent difference between the sexes. It was found that women are less likely to want a long-term relationship or one that is monogamous.

n In one study, it was reported that around 50 percent of subjects revealed a positive view of dating, while the other half felt ‘indifferent’ or ‘negative.’

n The U.S. Census Bureau found that nearly half of the country’s population is single.

n Pew Research reported in 2023 that of those single, half (51 percent) are open to either a committed relationship or casual dates. Over half of men (56 percent) are looking for either a committed relationship or casual dates, and less than half of women (44 percent) say the same thing.

n Fifty percent of single people today believe dating is more complex than at any other time during the past 10 years. This troubling statistic might be understood due to a shift in working environments, with many opting to work from home since the pandemic.

Lacking a decisive answer to the dilemma facing a significant number of our population, the premise we’ll return to previous courting protocols and the expectations of entering a long-lasting relationship is unrealistic. Society has changed, and we can no longer look back; making connections is complex, and as we suffer economic and political fallout and experience anxiety caused by world events, it seems evident that self-preservation is the predominant factor in who and how we let people into our personal orbit and for what length of time they can share the space. A Reason To Celebrate

Most don’t need a holiday to celebrate, but one that gives us a pass to enjoy outstanding cuisine and fine wines is the French Fête Nationale event: Bastille Day.

According to History.com, “Bastille Day is a holiday celebrating the storming of the Bastille—a military fortress and prison— on July 14, 1789, in a violent uprising that helped usher in the French Revolution. Besides holding gunpowder and other supplies valuable to revolutionaries, the Bastille also symbolized the callous tyranny of the French monarchy, especially King Louis XVI and his queen, Marie Antoinette.” The revolution symbolized the King’s power was not absolute. Mushroom Moment

EXAMINING THE GROWING EXCITEMENT SURROUNDING EDIBLE FUNGI

The lowly mushroom is reaching new heights.

According to the National Mushroom Council (NMC), the popularity of edible (nonpsychoactive) mushrooms has risen markedly among Americans over the past decade. In the U.S. and abroad, this “functional food” trend is easy to spot. You can find any number of mushrooms and related products in stores and online. Today, mushrooms come in sprays, powders, pills, chips, coffee, candies, and nearly every other conceivable application.

Like a patch of turkey-tail on a fallen tree, sales have been thriving.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service reports domestic mushroom sales of some $1.06 billion between 2020 and 2021.1 Market experts note that although lockdown-related restaurant closures during the pandemic saw a steep decline in foodservice-related mushroom sales, it was during this time that the public’s eating patterns shifted. Many started experimenting with more plantbased fare while homebound, including fresh mushrooms, for their health benefits. 2

In 2021, the global mushroom market was worth $50.3 billion, a number expected to grow 9.7 percent annually through 2030, while the U.S. market is expected to grow by 9.4 percent over this period.3

WHAT’S BEHIND MUSHROOMS’ ENDURING MOMENTUM?

What’s in a mushroom? It’s a fruiting body (sporophore) of a fungus, the part that’s visible and what we generally consume, while the root portion (mycelium) is discarded. Considered a vegetable, it’s actually a fungus, not a plant.

The NMC calls the mushroom “nature’s hidden treasure: always in season and grown year-round.” Edible mushrooms come in myriad varieties, such as white button, the most common variety; portabella, the largest cultivated mushroom with a cap that can reach six inches across; crimini, a small brown mushroom also known as a “baby bella;” shiitake and oyster, with their great culinary versatility; and the distinctive looking

maitake, resembling a hen’s tail feathers, and lion’s mane, unique for its shaggy, mane-like outer structure.4

Mushrooms are touted as a protein-rich option for vegans and have an advantageous nutritional profile, as evidenced below.

Nutritional Content of 100 Grams White, Raw Mushrooms 4

Mushrooms are also replete with B vitamins, vitamin E, are the only nonfortified vegan source of vitamin D, and contain numerous other micronutrients such as β-glucans (a type of soluble fiber), triterpenoids (medicinal organic compounds found in plants, fungi, and animals), phenols, flavonoids, and carotenoids.

Beyond its fundamental nutritional value, there are essentially four key nutrients that give mushrooms functional or superfood status: selenium, vitamin D, glutathione (a powerful antioxidant), and the increasingly popular amino acid ergothioneine. Together, these nutrients help to combat oxidative stress and lower or prevent chronic disease risks, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and dementia.3 Meanwhile, ergothioneine has been under increasing investigation for its healthy aging and longevity potential.

Mushrooms also have a strong umami (savory) flavor, enabling people to cut sodium intake in meals by 30-40 percent.3

A growing body of evidence points to mushrooms’ medicinal potential.

In a comprehensive research review in the journal Bioengineered, Anusiya et al. write that edible mushrooms have a broad range of pharmacological properties: antioxidative, antiviral, antibacterial, antidiabetic, immune-regulatory, protective of vital organs such as the heart, brain, liver, and kidneys, etc. They have “strong therapeutic and biological activities,” shown in both lab studies and living hosts. Roughly 126 medicinal functions of both wild and edible mushrooms have been successfully studied.5

Maintaining brain health and avoiding dementia and other cognitive ailments, for example, is largely dependent on mitigating stress in cells and genes caused by oxidation. Mushrooms’ rich antioxidant content effectively helps neutralize oxidative stress in cells. Studies have found that large bioactive molecules, such as hericenones and scabronines, encourage nerve growth factor production and keep the brain from deteriorating by preventing the formation of beta-amyloid and overphosphorylation of tau protein. Many studies have established edible mushrooms’ ability to preserve nerve cells.5

Interestingly, certain mushrooms have been linked to specific areas of disease prevention, outlined below. Note that reishi, oyster (species notwithstanding), and lion’s mane mushrooms cover nearly all areas of health activity.

Top Three (3) Mushroom Types for Health Area of Activity5

Gaining traction in the scientific community, ergothioneine (ERGO) is a unique amino acid with potent antioxidant properties that we obtain through soil and diet, primarily through mushrooms. We can build up high levels of the compound in our bodies, but researchers say blood levels typically decline as we get older and chronic diseases arise.

Though we still have much to learn, say experts, low blood ERGO has been linked to human disease development. Numerous animal studies have shown that by preventing ERGO uptake,

disease progression occurs. ERGO is unique as an antioxidant in that its thione form makes it resistant to degradation. Some researchers view ERGO as a “longevity vitamin” but note it’s limited in the American diet due to agricultural processing. Urgent further research is needed, they say, to determine how to increase ERGO in the food supply for better collective long-term health.6, 7 Pine, oyster, white button, shiitake, and maitake mushrooms have some of the highest concentrations of ergothioneine, with lesser amounts in foods such as oats, kidney beans, tempeh, oat bran, and chicken liver.

MUSHROOM PRODUCTS: WORTH THE EXPENSE?

Given its health-promoting properties, we’re seeing mushrooms increasingly used in the making of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals.

“The multifunctional activities of the mushroom extracts and the targeted potential of each of the compounds in the extracts have a broad range of applications, especially in the healing and repair of various organs and cells in humans,” explains Anusiya’s team.5

As mushroom food applications have blossomed since the pandemic, such as the flavored mushroom chip product Popadelics, so have mushroom supplements. Research on the purported health claims of these supplements is limited, but experts say people may want to consider them for reasons such as improving immune system health and reducing stress.

As outlined in the second table, the lion’s mane has shown evidence of protecting brain health. In supplement form, experts say it may act as a wellness tool to help control stress. Research shows the mushroom may help mitigate symptoms of anxiety and depression and promote a sense of well-being. 8

Mushroom supplements have also shown evidence of helping neutralize viruses like SARS-CoV-2 and helping people with medical conditions such as cancer. 8

Indeed, while mushroom supplements aren’t approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for medicinal use, a comprehensive analysis of 39 clinical studies points to their potential usefulness in helping to treat cancer. Of these studies, seven showed a survival benefit,11 had a positive effect on immunity, and 14 had a better quality of life and/or reduced symptoms. Though many studies were limited by small sample size and observational study designs, and more research is needed, say the authors, most studies showed mushroom supplements’ ability to lessen chemotherapy toxicity, improve life quality, regulate inflammation, and maybe even improve outcomes.9

That said, the Department of Defense’s dietary supplement safety program states there’s not enough evidence to support mushroom supplement safety or use for specific purposes other than as a food. They also question whether mushroom supplements deliver the same benefits as eating the fungus itself.10

Regarding ergothioneine, researchers say it “remains to be seen” whether supplementation in humans, especially the elderly and those with low blood ERGO levels, could reduce age-related disease risk or slow or stop disease progression. But they say ERGO is safe and ready for further studies.6

Those with an aversion to eating fungi should keep an eye on developments in ergothioneine research.

Experts advise starting mushroom supplementation with a low dose and monitoring for any side effects, such as dry mouth, gastrointestinal distress, or allergic reaction. Reishi mushroom

supplements, for example, can also slow blood clotting and lower blood pressure and blood sugar—a concern for those already taking blood thinners, high blood pressure medication, or diabetes medication. 8

At roughly twice the cost of regular coffee, mushroom coffee is another popular form of mushroom supplementation in which extract from medicinal mushrooms (chaga, cordyceps, reishi, lion’s mane, turkey tail) is blended with ground coffee, producing a darker tone and nuttier flavor.

Mushroom coffee has about half the caffeine content of regular coffee but still offers an alertness effect, particularly with cordyceps. However, research on mushroom coffee’s medicinal claims is lacking, meaning safe dosage, possible medication interactions, and who shouldn’t take it are unknown. 8, 11

MUSHROOMS AND YOU

Mushrooms are thought to be a primary underutilized source of nutritious food and are consistently among The Environmental Working Group’s “Clean Fifteen” list of produce with the least pesticide residue.12

When buying fresh mushrooms, dieticians recommend selecting those that are unbruised, firm, and dry, avoiding those withered or slimy. Refrigerate until consumption. Wash thoroughly before cooking. Let dried mushrooms soak in water for several hours until soft. Mushrooms can be eaten whole, sliced, or diced. They can be sautéed, worked into stir-fries, adorned on salads, stuffed or baked (portobello), added to omelets and pizza, marinated and grilled, and so on.13

Most experts advise cooking mushrooms versus eating them raw. See mushroomcouncil.com/recipes for helpful meal suggestions. As some wild mushrooms can contain harmful toxins, it’s essential to consume only edible mushrooms from a reliable source. Wild foraging should only be undertaken with the guidance of a trained mushroom expert called a mycologist. H

NEWS & OPINIONS TOO CLOSE TO HOME

LIFE ISN’T FAIR; HAVEN’T YOU BEEN TOLD?

California is toying with legislation that would halt prescreening membership to service companies, such as ‘Clear,’ which expedites ‘frequent flyers’ through long lines where the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) actually checks passengers. In the name of “equity,” according to State Senator Josh Newman, a Democrat, and others supporting the bill, Clear is unfair, and they believe everyone should be treated the same, as all of life’s experiences.

The cost is a mere $189 to join the pre-screen program, yet these privileged representatives can’t comprehend that if you’re flying, you probably have the funds to join; it’s an open membership. And, if you only use the airport once per year or don’t value your time—chill and enjoy the experience.

We wonder if Representative Newman (and friends) have ever visited one of the exclusive Airport Lounges that clearly separate ‘the classes?’ Once again, your hard-earned money at work. H

AND, ON OUR COAST...

Well, more than 100 ‘migrants,’ plus more coming every day, are landing and taking up residence in the public terminal at Boston’s Logan International Airport. The new-immigration shelter is hosting entire families on its floors. Interestingly, they either brought air mattresses with them, or the State of Massachusetts had a warehouse full of them, as seen in news reports. Here’s a question that needs an answer: If you were to loiter at an airport for days at a time, do you think, as a citizen of the U.S., you’d be accommodated? Best of all, an unnamed representative from Massport, who oversees the facility, was quoted as saying, “We continue to see migrants at the airport. They come to Logan in a number of ways. They also arrive to Logan at all hours.” But, here is the most egregious performance by the State: it seems the migrants are transported to “state welcome centers during the day, then returned to the airport for a good night’s sleep.” You can’t make this stuff up! H

WHERE’S THE TRAIN?

The people of New Bedford and the politicians who backed the $1.1 billion debacle are red-faced due to the recent announcement—at the very last minute—about the lack of progress on a nearly 20-year plan for a project known as the SouthCoast Rail.

At a gathering held in Fall River, followed by a duplicate meeting in New Bedford hours later, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s General Manager and CEO, Phillip Eng, shared little other than to confirm that the brilliant idea of rail service from New Bedford to Boston is delayed yet another year! On top of that, the State has suddenly (if we have our facts correct) hired another project manager to the tune of over a half-million dollars because she is an expert at testing signal systems. Karen Antion will have a whole year— if not more, to be sure the trains crossing are inspected and safe.

The displeasure over excuses for ongoing delays is becoming heated; dressed by the claim of safety concerns, residents on social media are questioning the viability of the new train, wondering if it will ever come to fruition. Others are demanding “Transparency” since the State has been tight-lipped about internal issues that haven’t been made public. H

For an interesting take on the saga of the missing train, visit newbedfordlight.org/south-coast-rail-2025-mbta-phil-eng-karen-antion/.

THERE’S MORE...

Although the Honorable Maura Healey pulled the reins back before serious political damage could be done, shortly after the out-of-touch Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation, Monica Tibbits-Nutt (who apparently doesn’t have the Governor on speed dial) floated a plan to build tollbooths at the State’s borders, a shockwave was felt throughout New England. Her reasoning had to do with a shortfall of taxes, but in reality, it’s wasteful spending that has caught up with this administration.

The State is desperate to raise money, either by raising an already high tax rate or invigorating those pesky hidden taxes, such as increasing vehicle stops on the interstate. After being absent for a while, troopers are now raking in cash through enforcement, which makes sense; Massachusetts roads are dangerous.

Also, tickets make for a better optic than, say, the idea of a ‘transfer tax’ on home sales. Talk about tone-deaf; at least this proposal was also nixed, but don’t believe it disappeared entirely, and, like a bad penny, it will return in some form. H

READY, SET, GO?

Those familiar with the white-knuckle drive over the two bridges spanning the Cape Cod Canal are thrilled with the news that the Massachusetts Department of Transportation has created a loose outline with updated information on the progress and efforts required for the ambitious— and all-important—$4.5 billion bridge replacements, likely to begin in 2026.

As of today, we hear that the new and improved Sagamore Bridge is tentatively planned to open sometime in 2034, with the Bourne Bridge following a year later.

As said, ‘the devil is in the details.’ Numerous considerations as to locations, approaches, access for pedestrians and bicycles, and the impact on the local economy must be addressed, and this only touches the surface. There will be public comment and opposition—always will be—since the construction will affect many living and working in the area.

Then, there’s the Cape traffic issue; as difficult as it is getting to the Cape in the summer and most of the shoulder seasons, adding construction traffic and congestion will worsen commutes, but it has to be done, and the sooner, the better.

It seems the only question remaining is whether Monica Tibbits-Nutt plans on tollbooths. H

The Best Day To Begin Any Project Is Today

Every result starts somewhere; the same goes for advertising, marketing, and branding. And, just like the attractive and sturdy oak tree outside your office window, it grew into greatness because it wasn’t shaded by competitive growth, devoured by predators, or damaged due to malice.

The resilience of a tree and that of a business are similar, although your business usually requires more assistance.

Suppose you’ve noticed a slowdown in traffic and receipts, the loss of market share where you were once a leader, or want to move up to the next level within your industry. In that case, it’s probably time to renew your brand identity and present a new and refreshing message to a whole new generation of consumers.

In a struggling economy, businesses lacking an understanding or mislabeling its ‘Value Proposition’ are succumbing to the competitive pressure of those who continue to evolve with market conditions as well as changes in customer preferences and profiles. Give it some thought, and if you’d like to know more, call or send us an email; we’d like to talk to you about how, together, we can improve your business.
