OUR COVERS
We make every attempt to create covers that show people living their best lives while enjoying a wide range of activities. At the same time, we give those with a dream of becoming a cover model the opportunity to turn it into reality. It’s rewarding to see the excitement and enthusiasm at our photoshoots on two accounts; those with experience jump straight in because they understand what it takes; without pause, the camera and model create a connection—a magnetic bond— resulting in a rhythm and non-stop action; work becomes art. As for our new models, little do they realize the amount of effort and planning it takes to do one cover, never mind four! By the end of the day (and up to four days), they’re tired but are
beaming with pride and anticipation to see the results. Typically, we advertise openings and do our best to give everyone a chance to get on our pages, but for November, our cover girl, Margeaux, didn’t need to apply. It so happened we were approaching a hard deadline, and our photographer (Lucki Schotz) discovered her; he noticed how well she was dressed and poised while attending an outdoor screening of a film sponsored by newportFILM at The Elms, a glorious mansion under the care of The Preservation Society of Newport County-The Newport Mansions. (See this month’s “CULTURE: The Rise of Independent Films”). She was bright, had a winning personality, plus the right ‘look.’ As a result, Margeaux was given the chance to shoot four covers and appear in this month’s feature “BEAUTY: International Fleurs de Ville Exhibition Takes Over The ‘Pru’ In Boston.”
A little about Margeaux: A youthful but experienced journalist, musician, and model (she’s done this before—Lucki—good choice), has unlimited endurance, and was a pleasure to be around. Living in Newport, she’s representative of all four seasons found on the coast. Her ability to evolve her appearance and expressions from set to set gives her a wide range of ‘looks,’ which is hard to achieve for many models when being watched and scrutinized in public settings.
Our hope is if you bump into her, you’ll let her know how much you enjoy seeing her on our covers.
Many thanks, Margeaux; we look forward to seeing you again.
ELEVATE
True equality will never exist, but we should try to imagine a society where merit is measured by all oars in the water, with everyone pulling their best. Naturally, some boats move quicker and are more agile than others. Not everyone will be a winner. Perhaps it’s time to recognize the vast talents we all possess, realizing the secret of progress is to apply them where they can best be served while acknowledging our differences and outcomes.
IMPRESSIONS
Home for the holiday; once again, it’s time to make room around the dining table.

Peak Performance
If you’re speaking about automobiles, then running on all cylinders (or for others) with a full-powered battery allows a driver to reach full capacity in operating the vehicle. As for gym rats, athletes, surgeons, attorneys, and any other profession requiring a select set of skills and volumes of knowledge, you know that to reach the highest level of performance means pushing yourself to the limits; only then will you be able to identify the internal drive that sets you apart from others. When it comes to our society, it’s the point at which we collectively work together toward the common good that grades our performance. Unfortunately, competition has become a dirty word in the age of calling everyone a winner; too often, this terminology incentivizes lackluster performance and neglects to focus on personal achievement. It tends to reward mediocrity, giving positions and (frequently) status to the least qualified or underachievers. Worse, it endangers the public and the need to advance in every aspect of society if we are to maintain our freedom and advancement above all other nations—and that isn’t a bad thing, regardless of what the media tells you.
Some of you may be asking why this topic is important enough to be here; we are pleased to explain.
It seems that the upcoming election is focused on the loss of freedom and democracy. As usual, the hair-on-fire crowd is stoking the fictitious flames of outrage for the purpose of ginning up the uninformed among us, hoping to influence the vote: so much for independence and choice.
However, the real crisis is the culture of dependency on government and a lack of enforcement of governance. To be precise, nearly a decade ago, the Wall Street Journal reported, “Nearly half of the U.S. population lives in a household where at least one person gets some type of government benefit.” Suppose we fast forward and examine the issue of illegal immigration in this country (those not coming through a lawful system established). In this case, new arrivals appear with no means of support and immediately become wards of the state and dependent on the Federal government for all their basic needs, plus some perks like pre-filled credit cards and cell phones while living in hotels at taxpayer’s expense. Evidently, leaders believe that the Robin Hood theory should be used as a guiding light when addressing the uncontrolled migration of people into our communities.
Our objectives should include creating pride for everyone, reaching benchmarks at an early age, plus making significant improvements in education because these are the future leaders who will rebuild America and recreate its greatness.
We’re all familiar with the comment, “Who do you want flying your plane: the best pilot or someone who grabbed the ‘jump seat’ based on new-found privilege?” Or how about deciding who will be doing your lifesaving surgery? Do you choose the one percent of surgeons with a record of stellar accomplishments or a second-tier doctor who was underrepresented in their class, so they got the job?
Are these difficult choices? Because for many, it’s snuggly fits in the realm of common sense.
A recent example highlighting the danger of not aligning the best candidate into a position or role was when an entire nation watched what was supposed to be the best Secret Service Agents ever to guard a candidate bumble and perform like the ‘Keystone Cops’ as former President Donald Trump was nearly assassinated in Butler, Pennsylvania—the first of two violent events within weeks of each other. In noticeable style, those less than physically fit and, at one point, an agent unable to holster their weapon stood between a gunman and his target. If not for divine intervention, flags would be at half-mast.
Undoubtedly, every citizen deserves to be secure, knowing they have the protection of the elite in their respective fields when they need them, and they should never be at the mercy of social engineering or predetermined optics.
The obvious problem, removing the fact that the path to citizenship is a shipwreck and our deficit is going to catch up with us sooner rather than later, the results of more and more people relying on fewer and fewer earners for their fiscal salvation and engulfed with dependence for their survival, is the imbalance contributing to the decline in our economic, social, and political systems we once enjoyed and participated in with empathy and willingly supported.
If we roll back the many thousands of restrictions placed upon us and get many of our freedoms back, we might begin to see productivity thrive. Additionally, offering incentives to those of lower income or status rather than entitlements might entice them to put effort into achieving their ‘peak performance’ instead of a government controlling them from birth to grave.
The only practical choice for righting the ship of dependency is to have everyone participate to their best level of competence and not elevate them for the purpose of instilling positive feelings. Our objectives should include creating pride for everyone, reaching benchmarks at an early age, plus making significant improvements in education because these are the future leaders who will rebuild America and recreate its greatness. An Idyllic Waterfront Setting
FOR ALL SEASONS
BY STEVEN CHAN
Anyone who has lived near the water for any length of time and watched New England rotate through each of its marvelous seasons will attest to the delight and fulfillment each day brings. Sun and surf, beach activities, and relaxation deliver many unique pleasures by having the water outside your door; it also includes a few breezy and rainy days, but they too set a magnificent backdrop (and an excuse) for lounging and chilling because the true character of coastal living can only be captured and retained in memory by the totality of all experiences.
Described as a ‘Dreamy beach retreat,’ such a rare opportunity makes this home with stunning west-facing sunset views over the water within your reach.
A charming ranch-style waterfront property nestled on a private sandy beach provides an unparalleled blend of
tranquility and comfort. Throughout the house, its living areas are complimented by banks of large windows, flooding the space with natural light along with showcasing its dramatic views.
The pleasure of combining both indoor and outdoor spaces is exemplified by its large decks on the upper and lower levels, which offer panoramic views of the harbor and beyond.
As an exceptional example of flexibility and laid-back living, the home also includes a separate living space on the lower level, plus two detached garages, which could easily convert to artist studios or home offices surrounded by beautifully landscaped grounds.
With easy direct access to the beach, the waterfront lifestyle found within this stunning, one-of-a-kind property makes it stand out as a highly desirable option with superb access to the interstate highway system, a nearby hospital, shopping, restaurants, marinas, boat launches, moorings, bike paths, and stables.

TAKES OVER THE ‘PRU’ IN BOSTON
BY STEVEN CHAN
It is the most traveled “bespoke flower event with more than 50 shows in 23 cities across four countries,” claim cofounders Tina Barkley and Karen Marshall, who made landfall from September 18-22 in Boston’s Back Bay at the fashion and food mecca known as the Prudential Center. Using the more than half-million squarefeet of retail space as their canvas and a host of other notable locations around ‘Bean Town,’ the Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE exhibition featured mannequins dressed in floral decadence by local artists and floral consultants. The free and mesmerizing displays inspired by art collections from the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) included portraits from the Americas, Europe, and Asia, based on familiar names such as
John Singer Sargent, Vincent van Gogh, Mary Stevenson Cassatt, John Wilson, and Katsushika Hokusai.
Sixteen in total, the dramatic representation of recognized works spanned the halls with plaques indicating the inspiration for each floral installation.
Probably one of the most ambitious global efforts of its kind, Barkley believes her skills for “making things look pretty, and a passion for event management and entrepreneurship” perfectly aligns with the vision and insight of producing such inventive worldwide exhibits tailored to each location and genre.
Marshall, on the other hand, is keen to point out and identify that the love of a flower’s beauty, color, and fragrance has universal appeal. Her contribution clearly focuses on quality engagement and unique experiential offerings that co-brand with its sponsors. The name
“...a flower’s beauty, color, and fragrance has universal appeal.” co-founder Karen Marshall
Fleurs de Villes translates to ‘flowers of the cities’ and is perfectly attuned to the many metropolitan areas the exhibitions launched. Organizers believe there is no better means for delivering a unified message than to create venues that comingle with enthusiastic audiences in the most famous shopping and entertainment spaces in the most important cities. And, crowds there were; traffic was heavy throughout the Boston event, with thousands of visitors taking and posting photographs of family and friends with the enchanting displays as backdrops.
Our efforts to capture the essence of the exhibition proved to be both productive, as you can see from our covers, and a novelty for those who gathered around our beautiful model during the nine hours we spent completing a photoshoot at Fleurs de Villes ARTISTE in Boston.
Enjoy! H

Pawtucket, Rhode Island, will once again become the home to The Foundry Artists Association Holiday Show & Sale. As the State’s most unique and vibrant holiday art event, featuring over 65 professional, regional artists, collectors and shoppers will fill the historic Pawtucket Armory at 172 Exchange Street for the organization’s 42nd event!
The Show will run for two full weekends, Friday through Sunday, with dates and times as follows: December 6, 12-8 p.m.; December 7, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; December 8, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; December 13, 12-8 p.m.; December 14, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; December 15, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The Foundry Artists Association was created over four decades ago by a community of artists who opened their I-95 Foundry Building Studios in downtown Providence to the public during the holiday season. In 1995, when the original Foundry Building was converted to office space, its artists moved to studios throughout the region. The Show found its new home in the Pawtucket Armory building, a castle-like landmark built in 1894, which formerly housed the Rhode Island National Guard. The Foundry Artists Show now takes place in the beautifully renovated former drill hall, and it continues to provide a unique opportunity to experience one of the area’s most significant resources—its artists.
During its long tenure, this popular New England holiday tradition has offered patrons the opportunity to view and purchase distinctive, high-quality work from artists selected to participate through jury selection. Categories of fine art and craft range from art glass to wood and include painting, sculpture, metal, fiber, mixed media, jewelry, ceramics, and photography.
What makes The Foundry Show so unique and builds comradery is that its planning and operation are entirely managed and maintained by the artist members. Relying on their specialized talent, they run electrical wiring, hang directional signs, post to social media, create magazine ads, gather sponsors, and check customers in and out of the facility; it’s a group effort and a labor of love that makes the Show & Sale feel like a close family event.
SAVINGS GALORE!
Offering Free Admission and Parking (handicap-accessible entrance at the rear of the building as well as handicap facilities in the Armory) creates an ‘all are invited’ atmosphere and acknowledges the Foundry Artist’s commitment to diversity of attendance at their events. But, beyond this, many guests are attracted to do their holiday shopping because Rhode Island has a sales tax exemption for artistic works created within the State. It should be noted that all major credit cards are accepted for purchases. It has been a long-standing tradition that the Association’s artists are committed to giving back to their community, best represented by their annual ‘silent auction’ that showcases works donated by participating artists. The proceeds of the auction help support a local charity to strengthen the neighborhoods in which many of the artists live. In addition to the funds raised through the auction, attendees have encouraged the custom of collecting canned goods and cash donations for The Food Bank this year. H

TA Relationship Between Our Living Environment and Emotional Well-Being
BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.ED.
he perennial saying “home sweet home” can be traced to the popular 19th century American song “Home! Sweet Home!” composed by Sir Henry Bishop and written by dramatist John Howard Payne for the 1823 opera Clari, The Maid of Milan. The melody reflects a traveler’s deep longing for their simple cottage and its singing birds, which provided a peace of mind dearer than the dazzling splendor of any palace.
The phrase, of course, is an indelible part of our language and culture, as we’re often reminded whenever we step foot on someone’s front porch. It underscores the importance of making our living space a refuge from the pressures of the world. But is there a scientific basis for fostering greater comfort and well-being in our home surroundings?
HOUSING CONDITIONS AND MENTAL HEALTH
In the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, researchers in Milano, Italy, probed the scientific literature for how mental health could be affected by housing conditions and environmental indoor quality (EIQ) in residential settings. Though research is still emerging, and the topic is still being debated, 31 studies showed how housing conditions and EIQ influence mental health outcomes, as demonstrated during the COVID lockdown.1
The investigators examined house type, age, and floor
levels, along with housing qualities, household composition, neighborhood, and green spaces. All impacted mental health.
Regarding house type, not surprisingly, people experienced less noise annoyance (more “acoustic comfort”) in detached houses versus apartments, in newer versus older buildings, and in higher versus lower floors. Noise generated in non-isolated housing was linked to worse overall mental health and more stress. Fewer opportunities for socializing in apartments and high-rises were predictive of worse overall mental health, depression, anxiety, stress, and loneliness, especially in women and children.
Concerning housing qualities, research showed worse mental health when residents lived in poor conditions; this includes, for example, moisture damage, cold and dampness, cleanliness, hazards, and privacy. On the other hand, better mental health was linked to more windows per room, ensuring daylight exposure for better sleep and optimal lighting, and having enough living space (both related to better productivity when windows gave visual comfort). Home improvements, like a new kitchen or bathroom, also increased overall mental well-being, as did energy efficiency upgrades.
In terms of household composition, overcrowding led to poor overall mental health, whereas fewer people and more rooms in a home generally improved well-being, depression, and anxiety. Overcrowding was found to exacerbate feelings of aggression and frustration.
The effect of the neighborhood on well-being revealed worse
Home sweet home it underscores the importance of making our living space a refuge from the pressures of the world.
overall mental health (and sleep quality) from city-related and traffic noise and improved when moving from low- to middleclass areas. Depression and anxiety were worse in urban areas, especially without a view of nature.
Related to green spaces, better sound comfort was derived from working in a room across from a quiet area and when exposed to natural sounds—being in nature. Overall, mental health was better with access to outdoor spaces, the ability to touch plants and soil, and being able to look at nature, indoor plants, and landscape paintings. Poor views of nature through windows and the lack of a garden contributed to depression and stress. These green elements were also linked to less anxiety and cognitive fatigue, more positive feelings (increased self-esteem, for instance), and, with gardening, reduced anger and aggression.
INDOOR LIVING ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY OF LIFE
The team’s research revealed other IEQ associations with well-being.
Not readily apparent, long-term poor indoor air quality was linked to worse overall mental health. For example, breathing higher concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) during enclosed heating months worsened overall mental health through “sick building syndrome.” Complaints often revolve around non-specific health effects such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and eye irritation. (Prolonged exposure to high VOC levels may lead to more serious health issues.) Regarding stress,
natural fragrances were linked to lower levels, while extended exposure to air pollutants led to higher levels.
Comfortable temperature and humidity were linked to lower stress levels and better sleep. Likewise, better mental health was found with improved sound quality through comfortable indoor soundscapes, with less intrusive indoor sounds (television, music) and outdoor noise while trying to relax. Increased depression and stress were linked to both indoor and loud outdoor noise pollution, whereas quiet music and nature sounds reduced stress levels.
They also found that having control over physical surroundings, such as climate and furniture adjustment, contributed to better mental health, less stress, and improved productivity.
Another area of IEQ is household clutter, which saddles an estimated 25 percent of Americans.
In a separate and rare real-world study in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, the effect of household clutter on well-being was examined in 1,111 adults (primarily women) by U.K. psychologists. They explain that “psychological home” is the place where we find refuge, comfort, and security and is often described as an aspect or extension of our selfidentity. They found that it was strongly impacted by what was perceived as clutter, or those things we no longer find useful, are accumulating, and interrupt daily function. Clutter and psychological home were strongly predictive of well-being. 2
Women with cluttered homes have been shown to have higher
cortisol (stress hormone) levels than those with less clutter. Experts say clutter can also promote household chaos, poor concentration, procrastination, relationship issues, poor impulse control, and lower quality of life.3
IMPROVING WELL-BEING
Despite the study’s limitations, the Italian team concluded that housing conditions can affect occupant mental health “in a major way,” but there are steps that can help. For example: (1) Improving indoor air by minimizing building materials that emit VOCs and with sufficient ventilation. (2) Daylight can be optimized through our housing orientation. (3) Improved indoor sound quality results in a more supportive environment. (4) Homes can become more “biophilic,” wherein home design promotes a better connection to the natural environment, directly or indirectly.
As for clutter, it’s a difficult habit to kick because personal possessions instill comfort and connection, making the parting of sentimental items nearly impossible.
To get started, clinical mental health expert Kristen Fuller, M.D. suggests carving manageable time blocks for each section of one’s home [and] setting time goals for each section. Items could be divided into four piles: to be kept, to be thrown out, to be donated, and [the] undecided. If something hasn’t been used in the last year, it’s probably safe to donate the item without regret.3
If feelings of stress, guilt, anxiety, or depression arise when decluttering, seeking mental health therapy is advised to help address any underlying issues, like attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and to learn coping skills to help with decluttering.3
MORE TIME INDOORS
It’s estimated that over half of Americans will be diagnosed with a mental disorder during their lifetime. At the same time, the World Health Organization says our built environment is just as important to health as socioeconomic status and individual traits and behaviors.1 Since the COVID lockdown, people are spending significantly more time indoors—from 60 percent pre-pandemic to over 85 percent post-pandemic—and this is expected to rise with a predicted increase in urbanization and public health crises.1 To turn a domicile into a hearth and home that promotes well-being, it’s essential that living conditions suit our needs, however humble they may be. The Difficulty of Anxious & Avoidant Attachment Styles in Relationships
IS THERE HOPE FOR THESE PAINFILLED COUPLES?
BY STEVEN CHAN
s if modern-day relationships didn’t have enough pressure and distractions put upon them, here comes a hard-to-talk-about but necessary topic that unloads more stress onto couples attracted to each other but are, at the same time, repulsed by their partner due to early childhood trauma when interpersonal connections are formed.
Welcome to the world of intensely romantic but life-altering dysfunctional relationships. Categorized as approach-avoidance personalities, their foundation consists of multiple cycles of love, ghosting, and breakups. The sad news for those experiencing this vicious repetition is that without intensive psychotherapy, they will never exit the merrygo-round of connect-disconnect, even if another love interest is
found to replace a flawed one. Regardless of who the partner is, or their number, the same list of disjointed coping mechanisms will lead to the continuation of self-sabotaging in every relationship. In all seriousness, these unfortunate couples are magnetically drawn to each other upon meeting. They describe their connections as ‘love at first sight,’ even going as far as believing a divine power created their chance encounter, the essence of being ‘twin flames’ or ‘soulmates,’ based on the belief their emotional collaboration is a descendant of their destiny, they pine for closeness. From day one, they love-bomb each other and develop a panacea of intense emotions that draw the other into a web of attraction. This description may sound overly dramatic but is it, considering these personalities were unintentionally created and taught coping behaviors that have become a blueprint for who and how they attract and navigate intimacy as adults.
Let’s dive into the dynamics underlying the curse these couples face.
Realistically, vulnerable individuals who share opposite attachment styles often feel an intense emotional connection when they find another person to fulfill the missing pieces they thirst for; quickly falling in love because of what the other represents rather than what they offer, the new partners begin to show heightened affection causing intensity and passion. Some theorists believe that during this initial connection, a chemical reaction results in the brain where the ‘pleasure hormones’ oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin are released, resulting in a satisfying euphoria that imitates the same degree of ecstasy a person felt as a child when they experienced infrequent but positive interactions by a caregiver.
Such an emotional jolt is addictive, sparking a longing for repetition of the feelings. However, after coming down and returning to reality, the distrust and negative aspects of faulty child-rearing once again take over, causing the individual to back off, shut down, and close off communication until such time they no longer feel unsafe and can rebalance their emotions.
These newly founded relationships are short-lived because soon after a connection is established, emotional distancing, caution to vulnerability, and acts leading to independence rather than intimacy roar; when combined, they seem to resemble a thirdparty influence when, in fact, the culprit can be traced to the initial caregiver, who was unpredictable, uncaring, and unavailable to meet the basic needs of the child. This inconsistency mirrors the avoidant’s current personality and interpersonal interactions, allowing insight into the turmoil these couples face when attempting to establish a long-lasting connection.
The initial feelings come in hot but quickly cool, causing the partners to become unfulfilled and distant, leading to a disconnection. However, the intermittent separations between the two romantics promptly heal, and new alliances start over with numerous agreements to ‘try harder’ or to better communicate their feelings and expectations, with promises that things will improve. Yet, though they will try to change their behaviors, the results remain consistent; each effort is temporary because the unresolved issues aren’t adequately addressed.
Here are some examples of an approach-avoidance couple’s behaviors and feelings:
• The anxious exhibit heightened emotions, while the avoidants are muted.
• Each partner wants—but struggles—to openly share their feelings, causing separation.
• Poor communication leads to unrealistic fears and misinterpreted cues by each individual.
• When approaching increased intimacy, each will react with distancing and disconnection, but for different reasons— usually protection and self-preservation.
• A partner with an avoidant attachment will monitor and establish distance; simultaneously, the anxious attachment creates closeness and becomes frustrated when their needs are unsatisfied.
• Each person will question the amount of personal space they desire, which will lead to disappointment and abandonment because they fail to agree.
Welcome to the world of intensely romantic but life-altering dysfunctional relationships. Categorized as approach-avoidance personalities, their foundation consists of multiple cycles of love, ghosting, and breakups.
Within a romantic relationship, instinctual behaviors develop based on previous experiences; however, not all anxious attachments (chasers) are alike. Some are found to be more reserved and authentic in their desire to figure out what holds their interest so firmly, yet they might not have the capacity to understand or self-analyze the reason for such a strong need to bond. At the opposite end of the spectrum are those who manifest worry and concern about the relationship ending just as it is beginning. They might exhibit actions that resemble clinging, extreme closeness, a continuous need for validation, and the assurance that ‘everything’ is okay. They ruminate about their new partner only to create fictitious scenarios that give rise to greater insecurity. These self-instilled beliefs can move in two different directions; the first is when the person gets so overwhelmed by the obsession that they break away for emotional salvation. It can become ‘too much’ for them to continue. The second option is to heighten the emotional responses when faced with an avoidant by smothering them. This action obviously plays against their intentions of building a relationship.
As for the avoidant, they long for connection, but once satisfied, they retreat and extinguish feelings by putting distance between themselves and their love interests. It’s as if they are on a tightrope, balancing the line between commitment and escape. Viewed as cold and lacking affect, they internalize their feelings and block that of others. However, as strange as it might sound, they don’t want to release their person back into the wild because they fear someone else will desire them; such a thought is devastating to an inflated ego.
Oddly enough, a belief both parties feel is whether they are ‘good enough’ for their love interest. This negative evaluation in itself could explain the magnetism that seems to attract these polar opposites who are searching for validation.
The question you might be considering is, can’t such a misunderstood and complex relationship work? It depends on whether two people have a true sense of caring for each other and are committed to taking necessary risks. Also, can they tolerate a plethora of setbacks and be able to air their problems with a qualified therapist with advanced training for the treatment of these two emotionally charged personality types?
What helps is when both people are from similar social and economic backgrounds, share strong core beliefs, and can envision a future together. Each partner must be able to accept the differences in a partner and be willing to soothe their needs while respecting their boundaries.
If you and your partner really want to plan a future together, know it’s possible, but it will take time, energy, and understanding. It all begins with working on yourself first, then with the help of the other person when they’re ready.
Best of luck. H
‘A Night At The Museum’
It’s an extraordinary task to compete with an event that includes waves of art, music, and fun. But, when the name Harvard is associated with a party offering complimentary admission on top of it all plus special features including exhibitions and famed personalities, it lives up to its foremost reputation as being ‘the only one.’
Each month, the Harvard Art Museums open its 50-plus galleries and impressive Italian-inspired courtyard jetting up to the sky for the public to enjoy an evening of entertainment, food & brews, and culture. Add a DJ spinning tunes with a mixed and enthusiastic crowd for four hours, and you have an incredible vibe that makes the journey worthwhile.
Unlike other venues catering to social interests, the ambiguous combination of attractions pulls together an undidactic means for expression and creativity. For example, the September event included temporary tattoos by artist Marc Brandenburg; his selection of unusual shapes and forms was an extension of his designs shown at the Museums.
‘Harvard Art Museums at Night’ is held the last Thursday of every month (holidays permitting) from 5-9 p.m. Each event features a mix of local talent, community partners, and guests who often come from all over to celebrate.
Located in the heart of Cambridge, attendees arrive by all modes of transportation; as for those from a distance, it’s recommended to reserve parking found at the Harvard Museums website. Note: on-street spots are at a premium and have limited hours. H

The Rise of Independent Films
BY STEVEN CHAN & AVA BARTON
If you’re glued to Hollywood productions and haven’t grown weary of sequel after sequel, an all-too-common template to produce an expected ROI (return on investment) and that if you wait a week, it will be blasted across you’re at-home screen, then you’ve faced headwinds that caused you to miss one of the most exciting and developing industries in the field of entertainment. Drawing millions of thoughtful aficionados to the lawns of local mansions, small historic theaters, and farms along the coast, people everywhere are becoming part of a movement that views the underlying creativity of filmmaking as an equal to its actors and storytelling. Market realities show that major studios are facing a host of challenges while the independents are ramping up. With traditional theaters laying empty, offering candy, popcorn, and coming attractions, the ‘Indies’ have found homes in spaces that include a wide range of beverages—
including alcohol, food trucks, music, a social and inclusive atmosphere that provides for shopping and branding sponsorships by local vendors to these venues. What was once a roughly twohour unsocialized viewing experience has turned into a multihour-long retreat and party atmosphere with people taking notice.
SO, WHAT’S CHANGED?
Short films have come into their own by providing high-quality production, coupled with realistic allure audiences love; an experience focused on details, and more effectively, tells a story that oozes imagination and genuine feelings; the independents are allowing the viewers to become immersed into the plots.
In the less-than-typical climate-controlled theaters, many of the Indy films are screened outdoors or in unusual settings that may not have the comfort of a fold-up padded seat but instead provide a feeling of being home among friends. With the advent of holding
significant and well-attended film events, many see it as a revival of socialization that was diminished during the pandemic. In a world typically overstimulated, with many distractions and responsibilities— competing for our time, we exert limits upon our span of attention. Interestingly, the potential of an improved experience by shortening a film’s running time while being able to get its message across gives credence to the view that quality doesn’t have to be repetitive to be enjoyed.
Recently, the Westport Cultural Council hosted an impressive list of films that play to packed houses at Weatherlow Farms in the same town. Titles included Troublesome Creek, an Oscar-nominated and Sundance award-winning story of a family’s gamble to save their farm; the award-winning In The Whale, The Greatest Fish Story Ever Told, and The Power of Stone; a glimpse into the life of renowned stone artist Lew French.
In Rhode Island, newportFILM has drawn massive audiences to a lineup of documentaries, including Daughters, the multi-award-winning Secret Mall Apartment, 76 Days Adrift, and a tale about the restoration of a Palm Beach mansion circa 1924 named La Claridad.
Then, this past month, the contributors to this feature attended a worldwide screening of 10 short films selected from hundreds of submissions titled Manhattan Short— One World, One Week, One Festival.
From the selection, those in attendance were invited to judge the quality, plot, production, and talent of each, and vote for the one they believed to be the best of the lot.
It is intriguing and eye-opening to discover that all of the films are qualified to enter the 2025 Oscars and are up for consideration for the 2025 Academy Awards. Surprisingly, we learned that once a person votes their choice, they become a member of the Academy!
Through all of the viewings, it became evident that Independent films possess a contrasting format that differs from the traditional Hollywood flicks. These shorts are rising to the top of many platforms, with alternative methods used by producers and directors to source new avenues for distribution to audiences.
Also apparent are the specialized methods used to convey vivid details and sometimes hidden messages that stand

out with relatable congruency. It’s as if the production was tailored to involve a viewer by connecting them to the experience rather than to position them as a voyeur.
A stunning example of this personal involvement is extracted from the film Room Taken, directed by TJ O’GradyPeyton. The story takes place in Ireland and is about a homeless man, Issac, who has trouble finding shelter. He sneaks into an elderly blind woman’s home, but instead of taking advantage of the opportunity, he develops a caring attraction to her plight and evokes empathy for her struggles. Issac, unannounced to her, completes a few home repair projects around the house while she is not around.
The audience is brought to tears by the bond that develops when the blind woman believes she is hearing things and imagining the presence of a deceased husband. Issac, displaying genuine and sincere feelings for her well-being, has to leave, but—not to spoil the ending—he will see her again!
Beyond this synopsis, the intricacies it takes to create the mood and movement are only attainable by viewing the carefully intertwined reactions of the players. Of course, the tenor of dialogue emotes feelings and emotions unique to the story; a cathartic film, it caused a respectable hush of silence throughout the small venue in Westport.
It’s exciting to witness new efforts to deliver a once-off-the-beaten path form of entertainment; also satisfying is to watch the industry’s expansion allow it to become a competitor with lofty standards.
Yes, the Indies are here not only to stay but to flourish.
