ELEVATE

Making up your mind requires being present, thoughtful, and always—in control; it also involves leveling up the courage to flex your independence by establishing and enforcing boundaries. Take a look at the three categories that describe the characteristics separating the strong, average, and weak, minds who, all too often, lay traps to ensnare followers to tear down those they fear. With this information, you will rise to every occasion and be noticed.

23 IMPRESSIONS

You do not want to skip over an apropos view of how many of the living find intrigue, when searching for the dead they believe to be visiting from the afterlife. Such fascination has been relevant since the beginning of time, yet it begs the question no one seems to consider: Do they wish to be disturbed?

BAYBERRY FARM

PROPERTY

Welcome to the peak of aesthetic perfection and the pinnacle of luxurious living; this month, we present our “Luxury Portfolio Review” of Bayberry Farm, nestled where the shoreline of the Sakonnet River and Rhode Island Sound meet. This exceptional $22,500,000 ‘Legacy Estate’ serves as an icon of unparalleled coastal living—we anticipate your satisfaction with the view.

32 TABLE

A lavish lifestyle is having a private chef in your kitchen. Although few have access to this luxury, we have discovered a person who can turn it into reality: Meet the Italian Diva! Chef Dedee Royale bringing her culinary talent, guidance, and flair into your home for an incredible day or evening of gastronomical bliss. Start thinking about your holiday gatherings because no one will be able to match your creativity in throwing the best party of the season.

38 LIVING WELL

To do or not to do: Are vitamins worthwhile? Researcher and contributor Rob Saint Laurent, M.Ed. takes a well-informed and objective look into the long-debated question of whether health supplements are worthy of attention and expense. If the findings do not surprise you, they will get you thinking differently.

42

TRENDING

Unexplained happenings surround us daily: premonitions, dreams, the tarots, and spiritualists making predictions, but nothing compares to experiencing ghostly events in real-time. Here is an account of two people—simultaneously, touched by an unexplained and unnerving encounter with something or someone attempting to share dissatisfaction with their presence in a mansion known for housing spirits. You be the judge of its credibility.

44

INTIMACY

The concept of Hypergamy seems to be on everyone’s lips—and in their minds.

‘Marrying Up,’ while considered a somewhat normalized practice and social function based on need or desire, has quite recently taken on greater significance with universal access to social media and an economy that makes hunting treasure incessantly desirable. But it is beginning to backfire; women are noticing a cultural shift; those they want are not committed, and the clock is ticking. Dig into what contemporary relationships look like and see what the single population faces when looking for a match.

48

CULTURE

Now summer has passed, the change to indoor entertainment and experiences moves indoors. From Ballet to Symphony and Art, to special Holiday programs and exhibitions, the excitement is palatable; now is the time to fill in your diary so you are not left out in the cold.

Minding Your Life–Not Others

Recently making its way across multi-media channels, causing many to reflect on their personality type, is a quote attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt; it goes like this. When people gather, “Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, [and] small minds discuss people.”

There’s a school of thought her observations weren’t derived from pointing to one’s intelligence quotient or disparaging their humanistic and emotional IQ; rather, it’s believed Roosevelt was describing the character of individuals she had likely met and divided into three groups.

To further clarify the substance of Roosevelt’s interpersonal contact and ponderance with the three personality types, it’s necessary to articulate specific dynamics and provide examples of each category.

Great Minds can be carved into a cadre of thinkers or, in today’s world, what is referred to as the ‘movers and shakers.’ Successful because they value time and place importance on the development and creation of solutions to complicated issues; these individuals focus on substance with adherence to personal boundaries. They’re found to be ‘caught up’ in abstract thinking, which is well beyond ordinary problem-solving. Accessing a wide range of methodologies to approach complex problems or to make discoveries, they have specialized talents that transform issues into simple but concrete actions, yielding benefits to individuals or society as a whole. They don’t ruminate on the past but learn from experiences and move forward.

To be enlisted into this category isn’t necessarily dependent upon income, equity, or equality; it’s simply a state of mind and a willingness to adopt a consciousness of being present with an eye on the future. And while it has limited membership, it’s open to those determined to elevate their self-worth and multiply their contributions through cognitive exploration and an unobstructed view of what ‘could be.’

Average Minds make up a good percentage of the population and are found in most spaces; they are considered to be polite, kind, and affable. They’re thought of as ‘going with the flow’ or possessing personalities described as ‘going along to get along.’ Often, they mimic conversations and are astute in managing social situations for the maintenance of calm waters.

Their discussions revolve around sports, the weather, community events, or their family’s interests. Opinions are kept to emulate the setting or another’s point of view so as not to evoke confrontation. “Live and Let Live” is this category’s calling.

Below Average Minds are found in all walks of life; however, quite interestingly, this category is overwhelmed by an extraordinary number of wealthy and intelligent people plagued by cognitive dissonance, or worse, pathology. Their privilege shades the erroneous contemplations and judgment of others. Oddly, those professing inclusion and acceptance for all are plagued with a tinge of self-righteousness and a myopic vision of right and wrong

intertwined with conditional approval based on selfishness or regret. Often, in the absence of knowledge or facts, they demonstrate intolerance of what they don’t understand and display arrogance to affront an unyielding resistance to learning.

Surprisingly, those considered lower income, less educated, or uninformed have developed well-defined social senses, often referred to as ‘street smarts,’ causing them to be cast from the category because they abstain from the turmoil caused by the tantalization of gossip that subsequently attracts those lacking achievement or satisfaction within their lives.

Application of the three categories details how those engulfed in the belief of ‘group mentality’ and behavioral guardianship of culture, and people are emotionally deprived and wholly incompetent. Yet, they possess power and influence through false hope, threats, violence, and, to the extreme, promises of death; they exert their influence and damage without challenge.

Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, [and] small minds discuss people.
ELEANOR ROOSEVELT

Upon reflection, prime examples of false justifications for such abominable actions include the Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials, Slavery, the Holocaust, and a multitude of wars and conflicts to touch upon a few of society’s many failures.

In each case, those clinging to flawed or constricted beliefs and constructs due to personal insecurities and fear of imaginary ghosts use false narratives to create unnecessary anxiety and doubt. Incapable of comprehending fact versus fiction or the capacity to acknowledge the right of individual freedoms, too often result in them being the first to throw stones and exert their will upon others.

These minds will never be changed; their formation is permanently impacted and indelible, leaving us to question, “What is one to do?” At best, taking the high road and separating from these individuals is the most appropriate option. However, even with the acknowledgment of evil intent, with its selective bias, bigotry, racism, and antisemitism hidden behind a cloak of virtue, the hostility will never melt the vitriol into puddles of forgiveness.

Affirm your opinion through thoughts, deeds, and actions; join the Great Minds, which are doing the work and know how to create positive change.

Befitting the exclusive title of ‘Legacy Estate’ for the scant amount of time Bayberry Farm has been on the market, it has generated a plethora of curiosity and created grandiose fantasies, but more importantly, the compound has amassed significant head-turning interest.

As a trophy home positioned on 108-acres of organic bliss with unparalleled panoramic blue-water ocean views, it

boasts a level of luxury and privacy without comparison. Possessing an unmatched sophistication, elegance, and austere grandeur, it is an Estate that rises to a level of architectural marvel and excellence, both inside and out.

Strolling along the expansive green lawn, outlined by curated stone walls, serving as a natural apron elevated above the vast shoreline of the Sakonnet River, it is evident that the professionally designed and manicured landscape yields a mystifying degree of peacefulness, admiration, as well as inspiration.

As the sun shines brightly, a relaxing off-the-ocean breeze caresses, accompanied by a hint of the sea’s swirling scent; such moments consummate a feeling that Bayberry Farm should be recognized and honored as a combination of both a quintessential New England Country & Coastal Home.

Undisturbed living is insured by a private mile-long lane passing through old-growth woodlands, a picturesque lily pond, and fields of open pastures; in mere seconds, the peaks of the home and outbuilding rise upon the horizon— anticipation builds.

“Possessing an unmatched sophistication, elegance, and austere grandeur, it is an Estate that rises to a level of architectural marvel and excellence…”

When nearing the entrance to the compound, the path transitions to a traditional, crushed shell courtyard with a mesmerizing barn dead ahead and a primary residence, an example of magnificent Greek revival architecture to the left or, as a sailor might reference, ‘to port.’

Bayberry is infused with exceptional appointments, fine craft, and custom work. In every corner and space, the most minute details were planned and executed for consistency and continuity of design throughout the home.

The Estate is sweeping, expansive, and exceedingly comfortable, with well-

appointed spaces—both in and out of doors. Classically scaled rooms with appropriate ceiling heights are gracefully joined by impressive corridors punctuated with glorious walls of glass, allowing legendary views to be framed by the home’s pristine environment; such beauty emotes feelings of collectiveness.

As expected, the level of living and amenities are an immaculate blend of form, function, and quality, highlighted in the palatial primary suite dressed in marble and the multiple guest suites.

The soul of the home is anchored by a chef-inspired kitchen that effortlessly flows and connects into a ‘great room,’ offering

breathtaking views of Rhode Island Sound, an adjacent wine cellar, wet bar, office, plus a pantry, and a relaxing fireplaced retreat.

Dining options included a choice of a casual dining room, something a bit more formal with a clear view of the rolling tide, or, when preferred, a few steps lead through French doors onto the terrace for an al fresco dining experience.

Other unique qualities that enrich the home’s vibe include a glass-enclosed pavilion annexed to the gunite swimming pool and waterside spa, an oversized attached three bay garage for the automobile collector, and an in-residence art studio with

inspirational views of the river.

Other unique qualities that enrich the home’s vibe include a glass-enclosed pavilion annexed to the gunite swimming pool and waterside spa, an oversized attached three bay garage for the automobile collector, and an in-residence art studio with inspirational views of the river.

Guest quarters are found in the main house (four in total with three bathrooms), a private guest wing contributing two additional bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a semi-detached guest house offering a personalized private living space, full kitchen/living/dining rooms, a private terrace, two en suite bedrooms, and ‘bunk room’ complete with a private bathroom.

Bayberry Farm is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a wise investor/owner; upon inspection, it is clear few homes possess a similar degree of attractiveness, function, and its long-list of sought after amenities. Adding to its appeal is the convenience of being in close proximity to Newport and Providence, Rhode Island, as well as Boston, Massachusetts, with jet access at the New Bedford airport, a short ride from home.

For the person or persons in need of optimal tranquility but also require the option to host close friends and family during the summer or extended peak holidays, there’s no better choice than Bayberry Farm. H

ndulge in a unique and affordable cooking and eating experience that is authentic, customized and, up until today, either hasn’t been available or is out of reach to many.

Consider this: a professional chef and former contestant (1 of 100 chosen in 2013) selected to appear on the internationally recognized cooking show, MasterChef, viewed in millions of homes and made famous by the one and only Chef Gordon Ramsay, teaching, cooking and entertaining your party in your kitchen!

This unique experience of having ‘The Italian Diva’ visit with you and your friends and family for a day or evening of prepping and cooking genuine Italian recipes handed down through generations under the guidance of private Chef Dedee Royale, is a worldly indulgence.

As an Italian and Sicilian American, Chef Dedee has always shown a passion for cooking, beginning at age seven. With her mother employed as a nurse and her father the owner of a cobbler shop in North Andover, Massachusetts, there was little time for either parent to be found in the kitchen; as a result, young Dedee received a few crash courses prior to rolling up her sleeves and preparing evening meals for the family.

In an interview in 2019 by Emily Bell of New Jersey Monthly magazine, Dedee shared a few fascinating benchmarks of her life. With a star-quality aura surrounding her, she pulls the curtain back on her professional life as a dancer, actress, and performer, “I’ve worked in some episodes of Orange is the New Black, [and] worked with Tom Cruise in the movie Rock of Ages,” she glowingly reflects.

In the early 70s, the spirited and energetic Italian Diva went through a divorce; her first thought was, “How do I support myself?” It wasn’t long before her unmatched determination, with an education garnered from years in the kitchen, Dedee decided to open a small bistro and catering business known as La Petit Gourmet in Milford, Connecticut. As stated in the Chef’s bio, “I was a pioneer in the concept of ‘take home’ dinners; far ahead of my time. Simultaneously, I created the unusual but trendy concept of offering private home dinners for up to 10 people; intending to be as authentic as possible, our wait staff dressed as French maids.”

The new venture brought her quick fame; customers from Connecticut, New York, and as far as Washington, D.C., offered to fly her to their homes and cook for them—they loved her and the culinary talents she was known for by so many.

Everything was going well with life; until the pandemic hit; the challenges of running a restaurant with a long list of restrictions crippled thousands of dining rooms and kitchens. But Dedee didn’t look at this as a problem; instead, it was a door opening after one closed. She decided to reinvent herself and the business by providing relaxing and festive in-home cooking classes that cleverly combine food, wine, laughter, and outrageous fun; the newly organized social event launched with immediate success.

Leaving New Jersey wasn’t easy for Dedee; everyone misses home at some point in their lives, so she made the decision to

return to New England and set up her ingenious concept on the SouthCoast of Massachusetts.

So the question is, what can you expect when you invite Chef Dedee into your kitchen? In all candor, the most incredible night of your life!

Here is what you need to know: All events and intricacies are discussed in advance with the host/hostess, so every detail is as near perfect as possible. Groups can be as large as 10 participants and include an interactive and hands-on experience where everyone is involved in the preparation of the evening meal. The class consists of creating the entrees, pasta dishes, focaccia, and dessert; wine or cocktails are handled by the clients.

With everyone getting involved, interaction becomes entertainment with copies of the evening’s recipes included. Once the food comes out of the kitchen, Chef Dedee and guests retreat to the dining room to toast a spectacular meal and share enchanting experiences.

It’s important to know that this form of education, dinner, and friendship is far from what others do, unlike the delivery of packaged pre-cooked items that you reheat. The Italian Diva presents a revolutionary in-home dining experience that uses only the freshest, organic, natural, and as much locally grown produce as possible, with mindful sustainability in every bite.

You won’t find a jar, can, or anything pre-processed brought into your kitchen or used in any part of the multi-course ‘Chef’s Table’ meal.

Here are some sample menu options to consider for your next dinner/class:

APPETIZERS

Asparagus & Proscuitto

Antipasto of Imported Delicacies

DESSERTS

It’s always a surprise; leave that up to the Chef!

Reserve your holiday dining and cooking class by October 31, 2024, and receive a complimentary class (A nearly $100 Value) for hosting an event.

The value of the at-home culinary experience can’t be duplicated, and you’ll soon recognize that it doesn’t get better than this type of event; here’s why: The price for each guest is $99* for three to four hours of sheer fun, entertainment, and a healthy 5-star Quality Multi-Course Meal, with copies of the menu along with personalized instructions so you can create the same menu at home in the future.

Why are people signing up for the holidays, you might ask? Here are the many benefits.

› You control the evening’s beer, wine, or cocktails for a small fraction of the cost; think about this: one bottle of Champagne at a restaurant is around $150-$175, and that same bottle would only cost you $50 at your local retailer; it’s simple math and economics.

› Quality, Quality, Quality, nothing compares to all-natural sauces made from scratch; no additives, colors, or dyes are added to your meal. Beef, when ordered, originates from farms that minimally process their products; the chicken is free-range, and the seafood is wild, not farmed. Additionally, all eggs are harvested from cage-free chickens, and produce comes from organic farms.

› The interaction between everyone is priceless; rather than sitting in a restaurant with the game blasting from the bar, you and your friends or family can relax and enjoy the sounds of your favorite music in the most important setting of all—Your Home!

› Cooking is a pleasure when everyone is involved; pairing up personalities to the event will make fond memories that will last forever.

› Tipping, that’s up to you; it’s not necessary, and you won’t be judged by someone pushing an extra expense onto the evening bill.

› Joy, The Italian Diva, is experienced in both food and entertainment, and no one knows how to keep the night moving in a positive direction like her!

Two other popular options include singles or couples joining together and forming a group at the Italian Diva’s home kitchen or the ‘Your Place or Mine’ gatherings, where you reserve and meet up at Chef Dedee’s home.

This type of experience also brings families together for birthdays and anniversaries or to reconnect and spend quality time together while the devices are shut down for a few hours. It also serves to introduce young children to the world of proper handling and preparation of food and fine dining.

The only question remaining is, “What are you waiting for?” Take a moment to grasp a concept hundreds of other people found to be beyond ordinary and tasteful—in every sense.

For more information so you can plan the perfect event and reserve your evening, contact Chef Dedee Royale, the ‘Italian Diva’ at 508-454-2001, 786-316-2638, or email theitaliandiva77@gmail.com. And, of course, you’ll want to visit her at TheItalianDiva.com.

GOOD EATING HABITS, VITAMINS, OR BOTH:

Protecting Yourself Against Colds & Influenza

It’s that time of year when colds, flu, and other viruses appear on the public health radar. Typically, ill health begins in October and can extend into late May. Still, on a hopeful note, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) predict this season will be “slightly improved” over last year in terms of peak hospitalizations from COVID, flu, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus).1 But with such a large window of opportunity to get sick, it’s wise not to let one’s internal guard down. The question arises: when trying to maintain a robust immune system, what are the merits of good eating habits versus vitamin supplements? Is it best to both eat well and take supplements for optimum effect?

TRADITIONAL ADVICE

In her discussion of nutrition and immunity, dietician Jamie Pronschinske, RDN, CD, makes the point that the notion of “boosting” one’s immune system is inherently flawed in that it implies stimulating immune function above what is normal. A good diet can’t do this, she says; instead, it can support a well-functioning immune system, which should be the goal. “[I]t’s important to maintain a functional immune system by avoiding immunodeficiency due to malnutrition or micronutrient deficiencies.” 2

When asked about foods, eating patterns, and supplements to support one’s immune system against viruses and acute illness, she says no single food or nutrient can keep you from getting sick. She notes that vitamins A, C, D, and E, as well as the minerals zinc and iron, are especially important nutrients for supporting immune function. She writes, “It’s advised that people obtain the nutrients above from food rather than supplements, as foods contain more health-promoting benefits. For most, a balanced diet will supply adequate amounts of nutrition to maintain a strong immune system.” 2

EATING HABITS & IMMUNE RESPONSE

This conventional wisdom is supported by comprehensive research showing that a Mediterranean diet can significantly reduce inflammatory biomarkers and restore immune system balance in humans compared to other eating patterns, including DASH (Dietary Adherence to Stop Hypertension), and vegetarian or vegan.3

A Mediterranean diet mimics the eating patterns found in southern Europe. It focuses on fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, fish/seafood (at least twice a week and particularly species high in omega-3 essential fats, like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna), herbs/spices, and extra virgin olive oil.

It involves low-to-moderate consumption of poultry, eggs, yogurt, cheese, and red wine while limiting or avoiding red meat, processed meat, added sugar, sugary drinks, and highly processed foods.

Analyzing 22 randomized controlled trials of multiple dietary interventions for lowering inflammation and supporting immunity, investigators in Germany found that the Mediterranean diet most reduced interleukin-6, interleukin-1 beta, C-reactive protein, and other inflammatory indicators, with other diets showing no substantial effects.3

The researchers say this is some of the first research to look at the effect of overall diet on inflammation and immunity, as past research has primarily focused on individual foods or nutrients.

It’s important since chronic low-grade inflammation (LGI) can increase susceptibility not just to chronic disease but also acute viral infection, as seen during the COVID pandemic.4

A critical link between inflammation and illness is the intestinal tract and the gut microorganisms (microbiome) that live there.

In another research review, investigators in Italy studying the relationship between diet and viral infections say that immune response can be compromised with poor eating habits since what we eat affects the intestinal flora that can make us vulnerable to infection. On top of this, nutritional status can be further compromised as our immune system fends off the viral infection.4

The researchers’ conclusion, aimed especially at older adults, was similar to the German team: “A correct lifestyle that follows the Mediterranean model, which is especially rich in plantbased foods along with the use of extra-virgin olive oil, is the basis of preventing LGI and other chronic pathologies, directly influencing the intestinal microbiota and consequently the immune response.”4

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS & IMMUNITY

The immune system and its relationship with nutrition is highly complex, scientists note, and challenging to measure because of all the moving parts. It’s a system that requires balance and harmony and isn’t fully understood. Nonetheless, a person’s eating pattern and overall nutrition status can affect immunity—even just a marginal deficiency in one nutrient can impair immune function.

While proper eating habits are foundational to promoting good health, research has shown that Americans fall short in multiple areas that can impact immunity. Between 2005 and 2016, almost 95 percent of us were deficient in vitamin D, 84 percent deficient in vitamin E, 46 percent in vitamin C, 45 percent in vitamin A, and 15 percent in zinc.5 Furthermore, at least half of us lack magnesium, needed for vitamin D metabolism.6

Researchers say vitamin supplements can help fill these gaps and improve resistance to infections when taken in the context of a balanced diet, such as Mediterranean-style eating.4, 5

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Dietary Supplements says a lack of any of 14 vitamins and minerals can negatively impact immune function: vitamins A, B6, B9 (folate), B12, C, D, E, and K, and the minerals copper, iodine, iron (generally not needed in supplement form), magnesium, selenium, and zinc.7

The more commonly studied vitamins for immune function are A, C, D, and E, plus selenium and zinc.7 But the strongest evidence of immune support is for C, D, and zinc. 8

In one analysis of 24 clinical trials, for example, vitamin C reduced common cold and other respiratory infection risk by four percent and symptoms duration by nine percent, mostly in men.7

While more research is needed on discerning optimal dosage, vitamin D has been shown to reduce the risk of respiratory infections, and deficiency may be linked to elevated hospitalization risk from COVID. 8

Scientific groups advise 200 milligrams of vitamin C and 1,500-2,000 IU of vitamin D as optimal levels.5

Research suggests low zinc intake may elevate the risk of

viral infection and that zinc lozenges can shorten the duration (not severity) of colds when taken shortly after symptoms onset.7, 8

AN OPTIMUM APPROACH

For a strong immune system this cold and flu season, growing research points to the Mediterranean diet and its proven antiinflammatory properties.

Given Americans’ eating habits, however, a quality multivitamin/mineral providing vitamins A, B6, B9, B12, C, D, E, and K, copper, iodine, selenium, and zinc, plus adding more magnesium and perhaps more vitamin D, seems prudent to help ensure no micronutrient deficiencies. It’s especially true for populations of older adults, athletes, and people with underlying conditions. (Seek medical approval first.)

Look for reputable brands and stay within recommended upper limits, avoiding mega-doses that can be detrimental. A blood test can help determine any suspected deficiencies to help guide supplementation.

Per the CDC, covering the mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and regular hand washing can also help prevent viral spread and infection. Other ways to support immune function include, for example, stress reduction, physical activity, and getting enough sleep.

Says Pronschinske, “It’s important to note that no single food or nutrient will prevent illness. Also, the immune system is incredibly complex and influenced by a variety of other factors, including stress level, age, sleep, and other medical conditions.” H

A CASE FOR THE SUPERNATURAL

It’s a well-known and accepted fact that strange and unexplained events are commonplace at the Hearthside House in Lincoln, Rhode Island. What may be less spoken about is how visitors frequently ask the administration and volunteers about the paranormal events witnessed or heard about by others. Given this truth, it’s understandable that the most popular programs held at the historic mansion are the result of folklore, tales, and an unquenchable curiosity distinctively focused on the afterlife.

Spirited Evenings at the Hearthside House is one of two popular programs that conjure many to make the journey to the historic mansion, especially during the Halloween season. Interested parties frequently inquire, hoping to confirm if a spiritual event is planned at the museum so they don’t miss a meeting with a paranormal expert in an authentic period setting tied to a mysterious but enchanting past. Many want to decide for themselves if the house is haunted; a visit allows a perfect opportunity to explore spiritual proclamations and psychic investigation through participation with renowned mediums who guide and channel with the ‘other side.’

Equally intriguing is the much anticipated Gone But Not Forgotten: Victorian Mourning Customs tours. An annual event, taking place this year on October 19 & 26 from 4-7:30 p.m. and October 20 & 27 from 12:30-4 p.m. Guests are transported to an era of traditional in-home funeral services and embark on a real-life exhibit enhanced by the museum’s volunteers draped in black while passing messages that the house is in mourning.

The museum, in its splendor, re-creates the Victorian mourning customs practiced during the late 19th century with intricate displays throughout the rooms of the house, which include mourning clothing, jewelry, artwork, stationery displays, postmortem photography, and other funerary exhibits.

The occasion is a dark celebration (wake & funeral) for a former owner of the Hearthside, Simon E. Thornton, who passed on May 2, 1873. According to the Hearthside website, “His body was prepared at the house by the undertaker, who came with his equipment and a portable embalming table. The coffin was displayed in the drawing room, where visitors would come and pay their respects.” Following the ceremony, the coffin was carried out of the house and delivered to the gravesite for burial. During the inauguration of the program in 2012, the organization went as far as enlisting an antique 1868 hearse for effect.

If you plan to attend, out of respect to the deceased, guests are encouraged to fit their attire to the occasion.

But, enough with staged theatrics; the purpose of sharing this story with you is to describe what actually happened to me while visiting the Hearthside House.

To get started, I need to address my initial skepticism (and yours) regarding ghosts prior to sharing my unusual and mysterious encounter. I have never experienced or had communication with the afterlife; I’ve been in an audience with a couple of psychics long ago, but rather than tell me my fortune, they shared elements of my life that could be written off as generalizations. They included vague composites about people they thought I knew with a slight degree of accuracy. It was fun,

...one thing is for sure; “I do believe in ghosts.”

but I viewed the insights more as entertainment, not guidance. I was invited, with another staffer, to attend a special evening of cocktails and to socialize at the mansion with administration and special guests. It was also organized so we would be allowed the opportunity to gather information about the museum and its history for an upcoming story.

The evening was illustrious; everyone was dressed impeccably, the passed hors d’oeuvres were absolutely delicious, drinks flowed freely, and the company and conversations were jovial. As the evening progressed, we were given a tour around the home, ending at the third-floor attic, which served as a space where workers at one time spent long days sewing garments. It wasn’t a large area, so I assumed the employees must have been cramped in the quarters while struggling with cold and drafty conditions in the winter, only to endure hot and stuffy summers. The entrance, positioned off a hallway on the second floor, is small and only accessible by a sturdy door encased at the bottom of the stairwell; narrow and steep, they’re difficult to navigate up to the loft.

As everyone made their way to the main floor into the living room adjacent to the expansive dining and drawing rooms, the Hearthside public relations person and I paused at the base of the stairs leading to the third floor to discuss, in detail, points of interest that should be included in my review.

Time passed quickly; we had been standing, laughing, and sharing stories about mutual friends and contacts for about twenty minutes when suddenly the door opened unassisted. In an instance, my heart stopped, then began to race, and my breath became shallow, with my eyes riveted on what I had witnessed. After a slight pause, I looked up and timidly asked, “Did you see that?” My guide, who turned pale and also breathless, nodded her head and, with a whisper, said, “Yes.” In disbelief, I recounted that I secured that same door upon leaving the entrance to the stairway.

a second unexplained event, I shook my head in disbelief, questioning the sanity of what took place. Most unnerving was my knowledge of how the doorknob had to be turned entirely for the latch to engage the casing so it could be opened or closed.

Immediately, I suggested we go downstairs, where I couldn’t hold back and gushed the details regarding our visitor. It is such an unbelievable story that could not have been created and witnessed by two in attendance, causing me to be surprised by the reaction of the remaining guests; they appeared as if they saw a ghost rather than the two of us!

With the air becoming heavy and silence blanketing the room, Kathryn A. Hartley, the Founder, President, & CEO of the Museum, stepped forward in an effort to offer relief; she approached me and nonchalantly claimed, “Yes, things like that happen quite often.”

It was only a few seconds before coats were gathered and polite exchanges shared—the house quickly vacated.

A few years have passed, yet still, when I think about my spiritual moment, a time when I and another disturbed a ghostly resident by our conversation and laughter at the entrance of their secretive world, chills run through my body, causing the hairs on my neck to rise; the shock and disbelief of an event that can’t be explained physically or scientifically continues to haunt me.

It’s unexplainable how two strangers met by happenchance and saw the same ghostly interference, or perhaps communication, in their presence, followed by actions executed without visible energy or physical matter.

A question that is never out of my mind and continues to maintain my curiosity is whether I allowed a spirit to make contact because I might have appeared vulnerable or inviting, or could the interaction have been an odd phenomenon where we happened to be at a specific location—at a particular moment in time, which brought forth an intersection between two worlds?

Staring at the door ajar, we assumed a breeze from a window was responsible for the abrupt opening—but there wasn’t a window or fresh air to be found.

After a few moments of nervous laughing at what had happened, we regained our composure and confidence, continuing our conversation until suddenly, without warning, the door slammed shut with a startling ‘boom!’ Shocked by

I guess we’ll never know the answer, but one thing is for sure; “I do believe in ghosts.” H

The Journey & Consequences Of Hypergamy

Thoughts from the alter: A CULTURAL PHENOMENON

“Repeat after me,” I take you for my lawful husband (no, I won’t sign that ridiculous prenup—don’t you love me?), to have and to hold from this day forward (unless I’m swept off my feet for another—a girl has to keep her options open), for better, (and even better, based on the potential you’ve shown me), for worse, (don’t start with any of the ‘icks’ or I’m done), for richer, (of course, why else would I be here?), for poorer, (not interested, I’ve been on that carnival ride), in sickness, (God help me; if I wanted to be in healthcare, I’d be a nurse), and in health, (you had better keep working—it’s about maintaining my lifestyle; and remember, you promised), until death do us part. (Cha-ching!).

While some will take flight over this parody, albeit there could very well be a trace of truth within, it’s not directed at all lovely brides, for there remain sincere and honest women to be found and wedded. As for others, it’s vital to indulge in the complexities and ramifications of today’s culture and the risks associated with relationships; it should go without warning; no one can predict what the future holds, other than the accepted parable; nothing lasts forever.

To strengthen this warning when searching for a life partner, we turn to the data.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, U.S. divorce rates grew substantially for well over a century (1880s-2020s); however, the numbers began to retreat modestly during the 1990s and have continued to dwindle. Still, we have to question whether couples are getting along better or if there are fewer people—only the most serious and those with conviction—making it to the aisle.

One observation is that couples wait longer to hitch up, meaning they are probably more mature and have a better handle on fiscal matters, which has always been a reliable predictor of divorce.

While we know fewer people are getting married or having children, many opt for or are forced to either live in their parent’s basement or the bedroom they grew up in, never planning to leave home due to years of social and fiscal stressors, specifically around housing and a rapidly declining economy.

Some couples might take the plunge and move in together for an unpredictable length of time with an unlabeled mate for splitting expenses and easy access to intimacy—it’s all good, but not a commitment.

Rumors have been swirling for years, heightening the fear of marriage through erroneous statistics; the media and the public have been fooled into believing 50 percent of marriages end in legal divorce, when in fact, these are the most accurate (2022) numbers available:

43 percent of first marriages ended in divorce

60 percent of second marriages ended in divorce

73 percent of third marriages ended in divorce

Still ghastly high and a significant gamble, what is far more telling, even enlightening, is when it comes to filing for divorce, an overweighted 69 percent of women are the initiators and often beneficiaries of a marriage’s untimely demise.

WHAT’S HYPERGAMY?

For all intents and purposes, it can be summed up as ‘Marrying Up.’ It’s the emotional and behavioral drive to find and develop a longlasting relationship—yet the average length of a marriage that ends in divorce is around seven years. It’s not uncommon for women—more often, to search for a mate, not equal but of higher value in regard to social status, wealth, appearance, intellect, and career.

IT’S ORIGINS

Marrying Up has been around since we lived in caves. Whether it was to secure shelter and food or, in ancient times, women, considered to be a man’s property, were given up for wealth and influence by their fathers in the form of dowries; they were basically traded as chattel to be negotiated over.

There are two opposing but likely explanations for the creation and continuation of Hypergamy in modern society. Social scientists argue that throughout time, the ability to rise in status and wealth by way of beauty resulted in the ability to amass power and control, even if it required the influencing of a male counterpart. At the same time, evolutionary psychologists claim that the innate need to procreate and ensure the survival of the species (other times, it was more about keeping a bloodline pure—which had its own set of issues) was directly linked to genetic predisposition and the desire to find the fittest match.

MODERN HYPERGAMY

Marrying Up has taken a new role in relationships; for the most part, social media and dating sites have caused a flurry of globalized searching and connecting when it comes to romance and climbing the ladder of social and financial success. Cultures and societies are commingling, and with it comes a field of prospects who were previously unable to meet or interact due to distance and limited communication. The impact, or more accurately, the result, is visible by an unending increase in competition for the most desirable partner possible, causing some to reach out of their league. A substitute for value equality or quality is often supplemented by money; sorry, there’s no polite way of describing many of these modern-day matches.

These facts correlate, if not directly influencing hypergamous activity as it has never been witnessed before; but, beyond this claim, participants with the lowest living standards now have an opportunity to compete with women from the industrialized world and lift themselves and their families out of poverty and political unrest in their home countries.

WHAT’S SO BAD ABOUT TRYING TO BETTER YOURSELF?

Criticism about Hypergamy is shrouded by an argument related to the dynamics of human interactions and romantic relationships. Considered to have become oversimplified with the creation and continuation of hurtful gender stereotypes, with names applicable to ‘Sugar Babies’ or ‘Gold Diggers,’ there are many ill-mannered, jump-to-conclusion bigots that will make unfounded judgments and statements based on a woman’s age or background and who she is attracted to; such dispersion is hurtful, unjust, and quite rude. They are the same ones who will attempt to pervert the reputation of the male partner by launching an unfounded attack based on personal prejudices.

A DIM FUTURE?

For all intents and purposes, it can be summed up as ‘Marrying Up.’ It’s the emotional and behavioral drive to find and develop a long-lasting relationship— yet the average length of a marriage that ends in divorce is around seven years. It’s not uncommon for women—more often, to search for a mate, not equal but of higher value in regard to social status, wealth, appearance, intellect, and career.

But then again, so many people are products of their environments. What is looked upon as unacceptable in some settings or cultures is conversely unnoticed by others. Age differences are frowned upon by some with those who are very willing to abort civility and share their unique bias and disapproval (as if they had a right to do so) publically. Troublesome is when an individual becomes aggressive or attempts to degrade a couple who they believe are violating an imaginary rule of appropriateness locked in provincial dogma while preaching inclusiveness. Sorry, it can’t be both ways.

THE FALL-OUT OF HYPERGAMY

Our Thoughts From The Alter, found at the beginning of this article, was used to catch attention, but more importantly, to illustrate a point of view that has millions of women across the globe defending their right to engage in whatever type of relationship they wish. There are websites and streaming newscasts on social media, pronouncing such beliefs with an element of education as to how to secure a highly valued man who will provide a desirable and affluent life for a woman. They are not embarrassed, nor do they make excuses for how and why they seek to attract men through their sexuality and performance; it has become normalized and passed down through generations. At the same time, laptop screens and phones are lighting up with men who are combating the very nature of what they call ‘out-of-control’ Hypergamy and offer online consults and classes to those who refuse to be lined up and chosen based on what they can provide in a transactional relationship. Clearly, there is no right or wrong point of view; instead, it’s a question reserved for couples who choose their lifestyle.

Many men would agree; some won’t. It’s the 1 percent who have the means, attitude, and resources to use the climbers for short-term satisfaction without any form of commitment. They know they’re desired and pursued and are pleased to spread the wealth, viewing the expense as a necessity, no different than a car payment—it gets them where they want to go. By fulfilling a role much like a contestant in a dating game, their brilliance at setting boundaries and quickly moving on when manipulative tactics become too exhausting to deal with, they, unfortunately, leave a trail of disappointment; none were wifey material in the first place and will soon be forgotten; forcing the discouraged to find the next vessel offering passage.

The problem witnessed at the altar of materialism, and elevated status is the superficiality of success based on body counts and bank accounts. The perception of value, which was once based on sound character, has been replaced by false hope and expectations. The emphasis on accumulating wealth or being ‘taken care of’ has an expiration date; for men, it is extended well into their later years, but it’s pretty much an absolute for women who only need to look over their shoulders and see the next generation coming into range.

Men are not stupid, and they certainly aren’t out of touch. Unable to attract authentic emotional intimacy, combined with the inability to find a loving commitment from someone dedicated to loyalty regardless of circumstances, with a willingness to hold them in a place that is prioritized above themselves, has resulted in the reeducation of the gender, irrespective of their sexual preferences. More than at any other time in modern history, American males are venturing overseas to find a partner who possesses traditional values and character without emptying their wallets in the process.

Who is to say any or all of these new encounters will become successful? One thing is sure: they won’t easily fall into the trap of deception when love can be bought and paid for with shiny objects; you might recall the pool has two ends; one is deep and the other shallow; it’s your choice where you want to swim. DALÍ: DISRUPTIONS AND DEVOTION

Runs through December 1, 2024

Appreciate and discover the outlandish and iconoclastic artist Salvador Dalí (1904–1989), famous for his bizarre imagery and distinctive Surrealist vision. Deeply rooted in tradition. Dalí studied, emulated, and indeed revered his European predecessors from centuries past, embracing influences from Spain, the Low Countries, and Italy throughout his long career

The timely presentation juxtaposes approximately 30 paintings and prints on loan from the Salvador Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, with European masterpieces from the MFA’s collection, including portraits, religious scenes, and still-lifes by El Greco, Orazio Gentileschi, and Velázquez, among others. In addition to these

illuminating pairings, the exhibition features some of Dalí’s best-known works, such as Disintegration of the Persistence of Memory (1952–54). Other examples reveal optical illusions and double images—hallmarks of Surrealism—while the monumental Ecumenical Council (1960) highlights Dalí’s technical mastery. By seeing him in dialogue with great painters and printmakers who came before him, visitors can experience a unique take on one of the most celebrated avant-garde artists of the 20th century. H
