TO COM E

elcome to our September issue—always a favorite— it is a month we love because it represents the continuation of the “summer escape.” As crowds begin to dwindle, and new activities begin to open, shopping becomes a pleasant distraction, with vast end-of-the-season sales. For New Englanders and travelers alike, it means catching extra glorious days of sun, surf, and other outdoor coastal experiences. This month, couples and families will close the season by hosting (small) homebased parties and dinners in place of the usual fine dining options. Intimately contained, there will be toasting to new love, and an appreciation for old friends; it’s never a goodbye, but rather, “I’ll see you soon.” And while our need for socialization hasn’t abated, our methods for achieving personal interactions have been dramatically modified.

September is considered a transitional month, as it ushers in the sense of revitalization and new beginnings. Some will decide to embark on a new career or pursuit, while others will grow tired of their living space, and choose to do a makeover. At the same time, the sleepy warm weather the month bestows, allows us to keep one foot firmly planted in summer. As the month closes, arrangements will be made to shut down the summer home and soon open the winter skihouse for another delightful season of cold-weather sports. It won’t be long before the aroma, and the crackling sounds of the fireplace will provide comfort and warmth for all. While we are excited about today, we can’t ignore the elephant in the room; yes, the coronavirus has been a significant inconvenience filled with anguish, pain, and worse. For the most part, the public has made strides in tamping down the contagion, but much more needs to be accomplished.

On the bright side, because of geographic shifts from cities to the suburbs, to coastal and mountain communities, real estate companies have played an essential role in floating many segments of the economy. With changes in lifestyles, a reorganization of priorities and expenditures, we have witnessed a fiscal restructuring and distribution of tax dollars and disposable income. It is because of these changes many coastal communities have remained resilient and productive since the outbreak of the disease. It is good to know that each day brings new opportunities, and we hope our words of encouragement play a role in seeing the light at this seemingly never-ending tunnel. Know it is not forever, and we will have some difficulties ahead, but in the end, we will be stronger, more knowledgeable, and increasingly prosperous because we battled it together. Enjoy the moment. H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 11

t’s easy to be negative, a miserable night’s rest, chores that have been put off for weeks—maybe months, or the news of the day (which has been more terrible than one could have ever imagined); when combined, the burden is loathsome. Add the daily annoyance of restricted movement, an absence of adequate social interaction, and questions surrounding how and when the school year will open, is enough to make the most stoic want to scream at the top of their lungs! It isn’t easy being you; no sir, (ma’am), this time last year, you faced the pressure of daily living, but it never compared to the events of today. Recently, some have experienced feelings of hopelessness and tinges of despair; it hangs over them as an invisible cloud, perhaps due to the disruption or lack of a satisfying routine. Clearly, the public is worried and concerned about tomorrow, but more importantly, they’re suffering from the lack of control over their destiny, sometimes due to decisions made by others—but, sometimes themselves. Research shows that humans don’t react well to constant threat, fear, or unrelenting stress; before long, the species begins to suffer both physical and psychological reactions to uncontrollable stimuli, resulting in feelings of helplessness. But, before you throw in the towel, we would like to offer a couple of ideas for beating back the adverse effects of isolation and the continuous pressures of managing a family during tumultuous times. For answers to how adjusted people are coping with negative influences generated by Covid-19, politics, and the constant barrage of eccentric social demands expressed by toxic individuals, we spoke to readers, friends, and family. We asked how they are turning the table on the pessimism and destructive nature of today’s social unrest combined with the pandemic.

Surprisingly, we learned that many are creating new routines; because they can’t go about old ones, they’ve reorganized their days and have made healthy changes to improve their outlook. HERE IS WHAT WE LEARNED

Daily walks along the beach—people claimed they never had time for this activity, while others told us they had started a routine of long hikes at least once a week so they can clear their minds and get much-needed exercise. Others have spent time planting new gardens, redesigning their landscape, and working on the aesthetics of their homes. They claim the modifications to their yards, by filling them with color and new textures, have been refreshing and uplifting. Many families have opted to expand their living space to the outdoors. Idle patios have been turned into outdoor kitchens and have become the new gathering place for family and friends. In many cases, contractors are busy with remodeling projects that cluster around the creation of three season enclosures that extend the ability to be closer to the outdoors but not give up the comforts of home. While many predicted watercraft being sold or left dry-docked for the season, a ride by any yacht club or marina proves differently. Slips are full of families socializing while remaining safe; flotillas are meeting up at various locations for safe-distance rendezvous everywhere. For some, their boats have not seen so much sea time. We spoke to a couple that went from never having enough time to enjoy the water, to packing up their laptops and only coming ashore for supplies. They travel port to port and island to island, only having to rely on an internet connection. “The pandemic has been life-changing—in a good way [it’s] something we never expected to happen,” the two sailors explained.

TRY NEW THINGS, OPEN YOUR MIND TO A NEW APPROACH, TAKE ON A NEW HOBBY, OR JUST BEGIN BY CHANGING THE ROUTE TO A FAVORITE LOCATION; MAYBE, THERE’S A NEW OPPORTUNITY WAITING FOR YOU.

Remodeling, painting, and purchasing of home décor is well beyond anyone’s expectation, and auctions for high-end furnishings are reaching new levels. The stock has hit new records— attributed to younger investors who have optimism for the future; apparently, not all of them are anti-capitalist, with data to prove it! All in all, the difference between success and failure mirrors feelings of fulfillment versus misery. It begins with a positive attitude, a willingness to make changes and step outside usual routines and create new ones. It also requires the ability to take risks—personal and financial. Try new things, open your mind to a new approach, take on a new hobby, or just begin by changing the route to a favorite location; maybe, there’s a new opportunity waiting for you. Enjoy September. Summer remains available if you so desire. H NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 13

t is an exceptional five bedroom, 4,530 square-foot home sitting atop the highest point at the Sippewissett Highlands. The sprawling, open-floor plan contemporary, at 14 Beechwood Road in Falmouth, Massachusetts, is a stellar example of design, form, and function, positioned majestically above the tree line, offering dramatic views of Buzzards Bay and the sandy coastline of Cape Cod. Multi-level, steel frame, wood inlay construction with a soaring 25 foot ceiling and oversized floor to ceiling windows on the forward wall, offer visitors spectacular views and a sense of freedom while quenching a thirst for space. The architecture is bold, and with resolve, it is constructed without com-

parison. The luscious interior elements indicate there was no effort to adhere to a stringent budget—the finished work is artistic and unparalleled. An understated elegance flows from room to room, level to level, accompanied by a feeling of comfort from the indoors and out to the multiple decks and balconies that accent an extraordinary exterior. A great room should be as prodigious as this one, yet most others fall short. Perfect for a small dinner party or an enchanting evening of entertaining, it is a remarkable location for those whose minds quickly switch from a desire for solitude to an impromptu gathering of friends or family. sound, central air, an elevator, and a stainless steel wire cable rail-system for a touch of nautical elegance. The living area has an ultra-modern gas fireplace and ceiling fan with sliders out to an expansive mahogany deck. The second level offers two additional bedrooms and an expansive master suite. 20 | SEPTEMBER 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

RARE, HISTORICAL, WATERFRONT HOME IS OFFERED BY LEADING BROKERS OF ROBERT PAUL PROPERTIES FAME.

F

almouth’s Chapoquoit Island was initially planned as a resort community for affluent Bostonians during the late 19th century. During the Gilded Age, the island was constructed when comfort and high style were exercised through the design and creation of extravagant homes. The small seaside community has always been viewed as an ambitious effort; but, its resilience through decades of tumultuous events has left Chapoquoit unblemished and has proven it could be more magnificent than initially considered. Today, the island thrives, principally due to current prosperity and economic conditions, and the enhanced desire for a safe and secure place to call home or a summer retreat. Every detail in the development of Chapoquoit was carefully considered. The planners decided who would have access to the land, the minimum investment required to construct a home of provenance, and of course, how common properties would be shared and maintained. Assuring the essence of the location would conform with its natural beauty, the developers created a list of restrictions then turned to the most acknowledged landscape architect of the time, Frederick Law Olmsted of Brookline, for advice. The island’s lush, park-like flora creating the many natural boundaries found today, is attributed to the excellent work of this well-known horticulturist and designer. Chapoquoit is considered a lowdensity association, considering it only has 37 properties selectively placed around looping roads found on the island. From historical accounts, the island’s surface and infrastructure were skillfully planned to be attractive, and of a higher standard, not to resemble NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 25

nearby summer communities, which were considered less desirable, and slated for mass consumption by tourists. Today, the island is awakened by the rare sale of an original estate; such an announcement brings considerable interest, since the passing of such an important property from one family to another, is a tribute. The stately home is a declaration of an era when pride and opulence was the innovation for the creation of Victorian Queen Anne architecture. Considered the dowager of Chapoquoit, the home— with its striking water views—offers a host of prospects for those willing to look into the future. Today the tony island is as close to perfection as one would expect— easy access to pristine beaches, deep-

water harbors, tennis courts, and two association docks. The community offers an enchanted lifestyle for discerning families insisting on privacy and security, and a wide choice of amenities. In addition to these features, the island’s peaceful surroundings are exceptionally picturesque and moving; the island’s visual character is a stunning example of gracious summer living on the Cape. The relaxed tenor of Chapoquiot is evident in comfort found along the peaceful roads and paths. Its serenity continues to adhere to the original intent and traditions passed down for over 100 years. Remaining one of the most prominent and fashionable gated communities along the New England coast, its location to views of notable landmarks such as the Elizabeth Islands and Cleveland Ledge Light, serve as a breath-taking backdrop to a sparkling fleet of yachts making their way to and from the entrance of the Cape Cod Canal or sailors capturing the ocean breeze that makes Buzzards Bay such a famous passage. Now available to those who have an appreciation for a once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity, this level of luxury living is well beyond its old-bones. Inevitably, a buyer will take comfort in knowing the intrinsic value found in the location, with added value rooted in an opportunity to create a legacy. The home offers a variety of options to a new owner. With an expansive 1.43 acres located on West Falmouth Harbor’s South Cove, the three level, five bedrooms, five baths, with multiple deck structures, could be gracefully rehabilitated to its original grandeur updated with modern convenience. Or, a comprehensive reconstruction project could be initiated to fit the needs of a multigenerational family into the future. Regardless of one’s choice, the first step in the process is to pay a visit to this magnificent island paradise. H The listing, 140 Associates Road, on Chapoquoit Island, West Falmouth, Massachusetts, is being offered by Lynn O’Neill (508-524-7352) and Barbara J.Hussey (508-274-1933) of Robert Paul Properties in Falmouth. The asking price for the home is $3,999,000 and can be shown by appointment—while accompanied by a listing agent.

The Explosion of Outdoor Living Option ver the last few decades, it was customary for homeowners to expand their living space by moving outdoors in the summer to enjoy cocktails and a meal with friends and family. It involved taking a section of the property—located at the rear of the home, installing pavers, a wooden deck, or other types of platform, enabling guests to socialize but remain in proximity to the house. A portable canopy might be erected—in the event of rain, matching all-weather chairs (with complementary cushions), a table, with a crank-out umbrella, and a shiny new propane grill would be expertly positioned for all to see. When the time came to use the new patio, conscientious preparations were generously initiated, but shortfalls were evident; the effort needed to cart supplies, food, and liquor in and out of the house—over and over—would leave guests pleased, but the hosts exhausted. For other households, the season was short; some tried fire pits to keep the party going, but without an enclosure, heat dissipates, and one by one, guests would venture inside. Over time, the excitement and anticipation of spending hours outdoors soon tarnished, like the finishes on furnishings left uncovered and exposed to the elements the prior year. It wasn’t long before the new entertainment areas were being sent to the dump—never to be replaced.

of social venues and the need to shelter at home. It’s because of these two events, people are scrambling to enlarge their living space by a significant amount of square footage. According to Hearth & Home, an outdoor living trade publication, the pandemic has changed how the public views outdoor living and its revived appeal. Since personal movements and travel have been restricted, online searches on the subject of outdoor expansion have risen over 140%. And, with restrictions on eating out, consumers are opting to stay at home only to cook and dine outdoors rather than in their traditional kitchens. MUCH HAS CHANGED—FOR THE BETTER. Over the last decade, the concept of an “outdoor room” has evolved into more substantial and useful spaces; they have also expanded on the idea of the functional outdoor kitchen into a luxury living space. Today’s extension into the outdoors mimics the concept of a “great room,” but more opulent and useful. New outdoor living spaces include flat screen TV’s, sinks, appliances, wine coolers, dishwashers, storage, fireplaces, pizza ovens, mood lighting, heating elements, beer taps, enclosures, bathrooms, a bar, and of course—a heated pool. Two factors are responsible for this recent transition; first, an exuberant economy, followed by a country-wide shut down

This particular feature is in high demand and doesn’t seem to be softening in a fever-pitch market. In the luxury home category, it appears outdoor living space is going to be expected, and in high demand. Without a doubt, the lack of this extended living space will be used as a negotiation tool by those shopping the high-end market, or at the very least, it will become a deciding factor when choosing a home to purchase. Falconry BY ROBERT WRIGHT

ave you ever been distracted while driving along the highway by a large pensive hawk, perched above the roadside, standing ready, in search of a meal? When viewing photos of raptors, are you startled by their majestic appearance and the size of their talons? Were you ever close enough to appreciate a bird of prey’s unique beauty and skill as a hunter of mammals—curious to know more about the species? If you answered yes to these questions, you, like millions before, have been drawn to the mystique these special birds conjure.

44 | SEPTEMBER 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

The paradox of fear and appeal of large birds used in the sport of Falconry, also known as hawking, pull at our fascination and give rise to our hunter instincts. Falconry, in its purest form, is the use of trained birds to hunt small prey, such as squirrels and rabbits; although, they have often been known to hunt for fish while chasing bait along the surface. As for sport, they have been used to take down smaller birds in mid-air. THE HISTORY OF FALCONRY

Since humans began to hunt for food, they continuously searched for advanced methods for capturing game, used as an effective partner, birds of prey have also been used as weapons and

S trict rules governed the type of falcon one could own… rank and birth [decided] the size and dominance of a person’s bird; the largest and most potent [were] for rulers— hence came the phrase “pecking order.” H eard of “wrapped around the little finger?” This term refers to the leather tethers joined to the falcon’s talons, also known as jesses, which is held fast to the hand of the master. The sharp weapons are kept short while the bird is young, then allowed to grow as training progresses. “ Hoodwinked” is related to the small leather hood falcons wear before they are allowed to hunt. The purpose is to limit their awareness of movements, distractions, and to keep them calm. W e can thank Shakespeare for the words “waiting with bated breath.” He conjured them when he wrote The Merchant of Venice. When a falcon is “bating from the block,” or held at a perch-with a short leash, their breath becomes labored and short. K nown as being “at the end of your rope, or tether,” the phrase indicates frustration, much like what young, untrained falcons experience when they instinctively try to fly away from the block, but is unable due to a short leash. T hen there is “fed up,” which most of us have heard or used a few times in our lives. It refers to the feeding of falcons before a hunt. This practice decreases the birds motivated, causing it to sit idle on the master’s gauntlet—uninterested in hunting for a meal.

CONSERVATION—IT’S FOR THE BIRDS

provided hours of enjoyment as a sport. This ancient art originated in Mesopotamia and Mongolia between 2000-3000 BC. Over time, the use of large calculating birds transformed necessity into a sport for the rich and noble; it has been an insignia for the aristocracy, followed by a symbol of power, strength, and aggression for a multitude of warriors. Even today, the words hawk, eagle, and raptor are used to evoke a feeling of supremacy and create fear for those looking to do battle on the field. As Falconry swept into Europe, so did the rules of ownership and practice; the sport resulted in the creation of grammatical phrases we use today. According to award-winning author and historian, Jennifer Eremeeva, the following expressions are the result of practices related to Falconry:

As far back as the middle ages, Europe created laws to protect birds of prey. One of the earliest was Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), named after the Queen of Sardinia, Eleanor de Arborea. She ordered the protection of the bird’s nests with the result of a hefty fine if a bird was removed or hunted. Other countries followed, and for centuries people have felt it necessary to care for the inherently intriguing birds of prey. Today, countries around the world are conscious of the need to defend the rights of the winged creatures. In the US, federal law supersedes state legislation and protects raptors. Regulations of Falconry are formed under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which prevents the commercial hunting of migratory birds. New protections extend to birds of prey due to an assault on thousands of them from 1900-1960, and the horrendous impact insecticides (DDT) and other poisons had on the population. US wildlife offices are on constant alert for the “hunting, pursuing, wounding, possessing, or transporting of migratory birds, their nests, eggs or part(s), thereof.” Rangers can be found in the field searching for poachers, with the combination of The Convention on the International Trade on Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES), and restrictions placed by the Wild Bird Conservation Act (WBCA), 1993, on their side. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 45

Outdoors Organizations have dedicated themselves to the sport of Falconry. Through education, seminars, and training, groups across the country are committed to supporting the traditions involved in working with birds of prey. Following the mission of “taking [of ] quarry in its natural state and habitat, by means of trained birds of prey,” enthusiasts adhere to a long list of requirements, often mandated by legislation, and careful monitoring. Practitioners spend countless hours of training and practicing with their hunter, an exhibition of empathy for all animals under the context of sustainability. TRAINING AND PRACTICES

There is a growing interest in learning about the sport of Falconry, with licensing in the US broken into three classes: Apprentice, General, and Master. Most begin with a bird commonly found in the northeast—the red-tailed hawk. While they are considered fragile, they breed well in captivity, are robust hunters, and are manageable. Birds of prey come in a variety of sizes and temperaments. Over time, the Masters, have used giant birds, like golden eagles, for hunting wolves in Kazakhstan, and to take foxes, even elk in Bayan-Olgii. In this country, most practitioners have a choice of subsets within each genus of Hawks, Accipiters, Eagles, and Falcons. EQUIPMENT USED BY FALCONERS TO TRAIN INCLUDE: n n n

46 | SEPTEMBER 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

Training a bird is comprised of different stages; the first is referred to as “manning.” It means to tame the hawk and acclimate the bird to the Falconer and their environment. Here, an association and bond are formed, with the hawk realizing its source of food is dependent upon another being. The Falconer doesn’t deny nourishment, but instead, it teaches the hunter it must perform if it is to eat; the process is known as operant learning. Once accomplished, the hawk will be allowed to chase a lure, and through repetition, the hawk becomes acquainted with the techniques used to hunt, then return to the glove. As the bird becomes proficient, it is allowed to fly freely (referred to as “entering”), where it will attempt to make its first kill. Once achieved, and a relationship is established between the Falconer, and their hunter—the sport begins. LEARN MORE

There are not many locations where you can drive up, put on a glove, and send a raptor flying. It is a serious and thoughtful activity that should be carefully considered. It is essential to understand why you have formed an interest in Falconry and realize it isn’t a day at a petting zoo. There is much to learn to appreciate the ancient use of raptors and the role they play in the quest for protecting their natural habitat. If you decide to take the next step, we hope you enjoy what is probably the longest-running sport known on earth. The process of releasing a bird to hunt requires knowledge of the equipment, its limitations, and its historical practices. on’t allow the title to fool you; there is nothing provincial or lowly about this month’s recipe, and you should not be dissuaded to trying it out on your family or guests, now that dining at home has come into vogue. This version—one of many—has some worthy contributions cooked into it by none other than Martha Stewart. I had an opportunity to meet her in Newport, Rhode Island, a few years ago,

and she made a couple of suggestions on how to improve this dish. Her valuable input, of how to turn a stew into a repas royal, can now be yours when you have a taste for a healthy, full-bodied meal filled with the ocean’s treasures. A hearty bowl of freshly harvested seafood, a few bottles of slightly chilled red and white wines, and cutting boards of crusty loaves—warm from the oven—make for a casual, but incredible meal. Once it is prepared, it is quickly heated so that you will be allowed to spend time with your guests

NEW ENGLAND BOUILLABAISSE

Servings: 8-10 Prep: Allow 1 Hour Cooking: 40 minutes* Total Time 1:40 minutes * Recommend making the broth and allow the ingredients to meld for a day or two, in the refrigerator; when ready, add the seafood and cook it for about 30 minutes, then serve.

INGREDIENTS

• ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil • Single large onion—chopped • 4 cloves of garlic—diced • 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme • 2 teaspoons of dried oregano • 2 bay leaves • ½ teaspoon of packed and crumbled saffron threads • Level teaspoon of course sea salt • ½ teaspoon of ground pepper • ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes • Large can of whole-peeled tomatoes—crushed • 1 ¼ cups of dry French white wine (suggest Sauvignon Blanc) • 2 cups of organic vegetable broth • 1 cup of clam juice • 2 lbs of king crab legs cut into 3 inch pieces, or 1.5 lbs lobster meat previously cooked (not frozen) • 24 littlenecks—soak for an hour before using and washed thoroughly

rather than duty-bound to the kitchen. This recipe is a cross between Italian Cioppino and a French Bouillabaisse. The main difference between the two is that Bouillabaisse is made with chopped tomatoes for a rich, saucy flavor that is enhanced further by the induction of my all-time favorite spice—saffron. One look at the list of ingredients, you will see this is not a budget-conscious endeavor. However, once prepared, it will become a favorite, and perhaps a tradition for celebrating the final days of the summer season.

• 1 ½ lb of halibut cut into small pieces—about the size of silver dollars • 1 lb day-boat, dry scallops • 1 lb non-farmed shrimp, peeled and deveined-tails on or off—your option • ½ cup of freshly chopped parsley

PROCESS

1. Heat the oil in a large stockpot until it begins to sizzle. 2. A dd onions and garlic and sauté until translucent; then add the thyme, dried oregano, pepper flakes, sea salt, and ground pepper, while stirring. 3. C ombine crush tomatoes with their juice, the white wine, clam juice, vegetable broth, and add the saffron; simmer for 5 minutes. (This starter sauce can be cooled and refrigerated for two days to meld, or you can move on to the next step). 4. C ombine the king crab legs or lobster, and littlenecks into the sauce and cook at a low to medium heat for 10 minutes. Add the shrimp, scallops, and halibut. Cover and slow cook for another 10-15 minutes (be sure the clam shells have opened, the shrimp is pink and the fish is opaque) to determine if it’s done. 5. Remove from the heat and taste the broth—adjust seasoning as desired.

AGE DEFYING SUPPLEMENTS While there’s no magic bullet, could some products help? BY ROB SAINT LAURENT, M.Ed.

54 | SEPTEMBER 2020 | NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA

F

or a time in memoriam, people like Ponce de León braved the world’s oceans in search for the fountain of youth. They believed it was a body of water (river, spring, etc.) that had magical properties to slow the aging process and prevent sickness. As we’ve matured in our understanding of the human body and sailed far beyond wooden ships in our technological capacity, we now search the world online for those miraculous properties in a tablet, capsule, or powder. According to the latest market statistics, American consumers spent 61 percent more on beauty-related supplements in 2018 than they did the previous year—from $89 million to $144 million. This spike ranked the US first in growth in this category among seven nations with the highest anti-aging supplement sales for that year.1 While it’s easy to dismiss the notion of “anti-aging” products as snake oil and consumers as gullible, what does the research say?

OPPOSITE PAGE: ANNE LEVEN/THIS PAGE: CAMMERAY DAVE

TOP ANTI-AGING SUPPLEMENTS

We now know that aging has many causes. Primarily, it’s caused by damage to cells from highly reactive free-radicals that form inside the body from oxygen (i.e., oxidation). Another is through telomeres, which protect the ends of cellular chromosomes for healthy cell division. The shortening of telomeres over time has been linked to increased risk of disease and death. Though aging is unavoidable, there’s evidence that a handful of dietary supplements may counter some of these age-related processes and diseases.2 Collagen is the main protein of connective tissue and the most abundant protein in the body, making up around a third of total body protein. Since much of it is found in skin, collagen is touted as a way of promoting a more youthful appearance. In a 2019 German study, 72 healthy adult women were randomized into two groups and given either the powdered collagen food supplement ELASTEN® or a placebo for 12 weeks. Each serving of the product contained 2.5 grams of collagen proteins plus other ingredients such as vitamin C, zinc, and biotin. After 12 weeks, the intervention group was assessed to have significantly improved skin hydration, elasticity, density, and smoothness versus placebo, which were sustained after one month with no further product use.3 In a second skin study from 2013, 114 adult women aged 4565 were randomized to receive either 2.5 grams of the eye wrinkle

formulation VERISOL® or a placebo. After 4 and 8 weeks, the treatment group (57 women) experienced a significant reduction in eye wrinkles versus placebo. Like the German study, positive effects endured for one month after the study.4 While many dermatologists espouse collagen supplementation, not all are on board with powdered or pill form. It should be noted that collagen is also used to reduce age and sports related joint and back pain, with some success in research. Curcumin is the primary chemical in turmeric spice and has potent antioxidant action. Research has shown this action to extend the lifespan of fruit flies and mice. In people, it’s been shown to counter cellular damage; delay age-related disease, including mental decline; and even mitigate age-related symptoms.5, 6 Curcumin helps slow what’s known as cellular senescence when cells stop dividing and can end up lingering—so-called “zombie” cells. It does this by triggering a metabolic protein signaling path, known as AMPK that cells rely on for energy needs. “Animal models have shown that compounds that activate the protein have health-promoting effects to reverse diabetes, improve cardiovascular health, treat mitochondrial disease—even extend life span,” say researchers at Salk Institute.7 The typical curcumin dose used in research is 500-2,000 mg daily in the form of a concentrated turmeric extract. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the chief polyphenol in green tea. For decades, green tea has been studied for its strong antioxidant and anti-aging properties, as in Chinese smokers who drink green tea and have lower lung cancer rates than non-tea-drinking smokers. More recent research has demonstrated EGCG’s longevity-promoting and protective ability against death from all causes including, diabetes, heart disease, and multiple cancers.8, 9 Studies have also shown EGCG’s ability to protect against skin wrinkling from ultraviolet light.10 EGCG’s anti-aging effect may derive from its ability to restore cellular mitochondria and help prevent cellular senescence through activation of protein signaling pathways like AMPK and clearance of damaged cells (autophagy).10 Supplementation with EGCG green tea extract in place of, or in addition to, tea consumption may be practical since maximum benefits may only be obtained with 1 liter, or 3-5 cups, of daily green tea consumption. Elemental magnesium is a major mineral that is essential to the human diet and has an anti-aging ability. Research shows that as much as 75 percent of Americans fall short of the daily NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 55

Living Well recommended intake of 320 mg for adult women aged 31 and older and 420 mg for adult men aged 31 and older. This inadequacy can increase the risk of age-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes. One 20 year study of 4,000 people, for example, revealed that those with the highest magnesium consumption had a 47 percent lower risk of diabetes.11 Another study showed supplementation of 450 mg of daily elemental magnesium substantially reduced high blood pressure in diabetic adults versus placebo.12 Magnesium’s overall anti-aging effect stems from its ability to lower systemic inflammation—the root of many chronic diseases. Quercetin belongs to the plant pigment family called flavonoids, having strong antioxidant properties. It is found in many plants and foods such as green tea, apples, berries, cherries, broccoli, and onions, which have the highest quercetin content. Quercetin’s potential aging-related benefits include, fighting free radicals (oxidation); antihistamine action for seasonal allergies; reducing inflammation, heart disease, and cancer risk; helping stave off neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; and reducing high blood pressure.13 One study showed that rats given the equivalent of 80 mg/ kg of quercetin daily experienced a stop to acute and chronic inflammation, along with anti-arthritis activity.14 A two month study of healthy male amateur athletes, given 500 mg of quercetin daily, showed a significant reduction in the inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (CRP). (In a different study, however, women with rheumatoid arthritis did not experience a reduction in CRP after two months of 500 mg of quercetin daily.)14 Other animal and lab research has shown quercetin’s ability to inhibit the processes involved in Alzheimer’s (for example, tau protein activation). Although developing a more stable form of quercetin that can pass through the blood-brain barrier in humans is needed.15 In general, most studies on quercetin have been in animals or a Petri dish, so more in human studies are needed for confirmation. The typical dose is 500-1,000 mg daily and often comes formulated with vitamin C and bromelain enzyme for better absorption. For additional reading, other supplements with evidencebased anti-aging properties are: coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone); crocin (a flavonoid found in saffron spice); nicotinamide riboside (to help replenish NAD+ for proper cell function); theanine (an amino acid in green tea); garlic (potentially effective against skin aging); and resveratrol (a polyphenol/ antioxidant made popular in red wine).

along with regular physical activity and stress reduction. (It is generally advised that people first consult their healthcare provider before pursuing dietary supplements.) Experts acknowledge it is possible to slow biological aging on an individual level through a healthy lifestyle, though anti-aging science is still in its early stages. This past June, scientists at Washington State University discovered that where we live may impact how well we live and thus our ability to beat our genetic odds of reaching age 100. They noted that having resilient genes only accounts for about 20-35 percent of those odds.16, 17 While not involving a body of water with exciting magical properties, the researchers found that people living in mixedage, higher-income communities, that are easily walkable, in either an urban or small town, may be more likely to see 100 years old. Through death records of nearly 145,000 Washington residents—aged 75 and older—between 2011 and 2015, it was determined that “survivability” was related to a person’s location. Poverty level, transportation, healthcare access, the number of working-aged adults nearby, whether it is a city or suburb, air pollution, amount of green space, and walkability, were determining variables for predicting longevity. Such data could eventually help build healthier neighborhoods that foster a longer life, the researchers said. Now the question is, how many centenarians live near you? H

GOOD PLANNING CREATES WINNERS

Marketing Insight #2: Don’t confuse Marketing Strategy with Media Buying Too often, companies rely on sales representatives from media companies for advice and strategy, similar to asking a car salesman what brand they recommend—of course, it’s going to be the one they sell.

To develop a Marketing Strategy, you need to begin with a checklist of elements that lay the foundation for effective branding: • Value Proposition Written? • Sales Messages Outlined? • Logo Completed? • Professional Photography in the Can? • Website Designed and Prepared to Launch?

• SEO Planned? • Editorial/Press Lined Up? These tasks need to be completed—or at best— updated and ready to go live before you speak to a salesperson. Without a plan, you’re destined to mis-allocate your budget and end up with confusion and an

identity that looks as if a committee created it— a problem found with companies that don’t understand the concept of messaging. For a complimentary review of your project, contact our Marketing Strategists at explore@creative-mine.com.

Get Out of the Way BY ANDREW AARON, LICSW

KERTU SAARITS

Intimacy

Like light, love is nourishing, and when it flows between romantic partners, it becomes reaffirming and alive.

T

he well-known truth is that love is not selfish, and when building a satisfying love relationship, knowing when to get out of the way is vital. Sometimes we learn that less is more, especially when showing our love for another; unfortunately, trouble begins when an over-eager partner injects themselves into a moment when it is not necessary or welcomed. Love is an amazing emotion, although difficult to define; when it’s present— we know it, and when absent, it leaves a hole in the heart.

Like light, love is nourishing, and when it flows between romantic partners, it becomes reaffirming and alive. Similarly, it is invisible but is shown when it reflects from an object and illuminates. Light and love don’t call attention, but each is active. Individuals—with all of their flaws, resemble light shades; they can be delightfully beautiful; however, they sometimes block the streaming light/ love and dim its full brilliance. Fear, pain, and doubt make a person dark, causing them to block the light, which radiates from love. Have you ever forgotten about yourself, disassociate from individualism, and become part of a moment with another? Often, when we find ourselves most happy is when we get out of our “own” way. These are the moments when time passes quickly, and we experience great pleasure. Conversely, recall when you’ve spoken to someone who incessantly speaks about themselves or injects their personal experience regardless of the topic. This type of kidnapping of the conversation proves quite dissatisfying, causing the interaction to be ruined. This example describes what it’s like when someone doesn’t get out of [their] own way. Being stuck on oneself is evidence of unhealed inner wounds; it is a condition of narcissism which results in all topics and events becoming tied to that person.

While most of us possess the inability to get out of the way, people in pain are challenged because being uncomfortable interferes with forgetting about themselves. Being in love requires specific strengths, and one of them is the ability to get out the way. Truly loving someone means giving in the way that is most satisfying to the recipient, not the giver. Another concept is the skill of listening; it requires the listener to empty their minds of the “self ” and to create a mental space that is open to receiving what another is sharing. Understanding—which includes listening—demands that attention to oneself is suspended, and our sense of right, good, and best, be halted. Love requires our judgment and critical process to allow others to have a voice and their turn. Patience demands we shut down our needs—temporarily, and begin to have fun with another; it requires we forget about ourselves and enjoy what they have to offer. Finally, we should identify other ways we block the flow of love. Too often, we take someone’s actions, choices, or words personally. In these situations, we mistakenly interpret external circumstances as an indication of our worthiness or value. It’s time to shine the light of your love on those around you. Make it about them and get out of the way. H Andrew Aaron, LICSW, is a sex and relationship therapist who practices in the New Bedford Seaport. NEW ENGLAND NEWS + MEDIA | SEPTEMBER 2020 | 61
