Organic wellness at The Good Spot
The Good Spot is a wellness lounge owned and operated by Trish Naudon-Thomas and Chris Thomas, who are also the owners of Good Body Products. With over 10 years of experience as veterans of the Brattleboro Farmers Market, they have developed a deep passion for plants and education.
Trish and Chris have long harbored a dream of creating a wellness hub, and now that dream has become a reality. Good Body Products, their original venture, provided a natural foundation for expanding their offerings. Not only did Good Body Products set them up with the business acumen they needed to expand their business (Good Body Products ships worldwide and is one of the top CBD manufacturers in the US), it set a foundation for its local customer base. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted their participation at the Brattleboro Farmers Market, they realized the limitations of being unable to engage with customers, share their herbal knowledge, or allow them to experience their products. This led them to enhance their website and actively search for a small retail space in the community.
When they discovered the potential of the Good Spot location, they saw an opportunity to create more than just a retail space; they envisioned a wellness hub where the community could come and relax.
At The Good Spot, a diverse selection of locally crafted and organic wellness products awaits customers. The wellness bar offers an enticing range of beverages, including herbal elixirs, NA cocktails, teas, coffee, nitro, cold brew, and the option to add CBD to any drink. The lounge also boasts a team of highly skilled Massage Therapists, Reiki practitioners, and an in-house Herbalist. Live music performances, workshops, and exciting special events (TBA) contribute to the vibrant atmosphere of the space.
Trish and Chris’s aim is to create a unique and unparalleled experience for those seeking an alternative to traditional bars. Their vision was to establish a beautiful and safe haven that caters to people of all ages, providing them with healthier choices. The Good Spot is proud to be the only non-alcoholic wellness lounge in the area, offering a place

where customers can enjoy CBDinfused beverages and indulge in a relaxing massage. The Happy Hour Friday Events from 5pm to 7pm have already gained popularity, featuring live music, workshops, tarot readings, entertainment, and complimentary tastings of new and healthy beverages. The team understands the desire for an early night’s rest and appreciates the importance of work-life balance, especially when chickens, dogs, kitties, and kids regularly get us all up at 5:30 am!
Within The Good Spot’s elegantly designed space, constructed using wood sourced from two local farms, customers can explore a wide array of locally hand-crafted wellness products. The lounge also establishes strong partnerships with trusted local suppliers, such as High Meadows Farm, Halifax Hollow, Deer Ridge Farm, Zach Woods Farm, and Good Body Farm, ensuring highquality plant starters and ingredients, including CBD plants.
Among the diverse offerings, the Good Body Products line of CBD products stands out, with customers showing immense enthusiasm. Crafting these products is no small feat, particularly as CBD laws become more stringent for small-batch makers in
Vermont. Nonetheless, Trish and Chris remain dedicated to producing exceptional CBD-infused goods. Having spent over two decades honing their herbal knowledge, Trish and Chris are excited to share their expertise with the hope of making a positive impact. Trish, a third-generation herbalist, draws inspiration from her Abuelita’s traditional Mexican herbal practices and the healing plants of the Northeast, which she began exploring upon moving to the East Coast in 1990. In addition to their work at The Good Spot, Trish and Chris are also passionate musicians. Trish is a drummer and singer, Chris is a guitarist and singer, and they both perform with The Fantastic Partners and The Natch, and Chris also performs with his heavy metal band
Lesion (from NYC). They are overjoyed to be able to blend their love for plants and music in a business built from the heart.
The community holds a special place in Trish and Chris’s hearts. They are grateful to be surrounded by knowledgeable community members with high standards who appreciate locally crafted products made with good intentions. The abundance of medicinal plants in the region allows for collaboration with local farmers and the opportunity to empower individuals on their wellness journeys.
Trish and Chris eagerly await the chance to welcome customers to The Good Spot, where they strive to provide an exceptional experience rooted in wellness, community, and genuine care.

For the Love of Vermont:
The Lyman Orton Collection of Vermont’s Art Golden Era 1920–1960 by the Proprietor of The Vermont Country Store
One Exhibition, Two Venues July through October at Bennington Museum and Southern Vermont Arts Center
Located in the southwestern part of the Green Mountain State, Bennington Museum presents and explores the rich culture of Southern Vermont, eastern New York State, northwestern Massachusetts, and Southern New Hampshire in all its forms, from the 18th century to the present. It connects visitors with objects of art and history, the culture and natural landscape, and puts it into context across time and place through innovative exhibitions and programming, virtually and in-person.
More than 200 works of art that capture Vermont’s unique character, people, traditions, and landscape prior to the 1970s from the collection of Lyman Orton, proprietor of the Vermont Country Store, will be unveiled to the public in an unprecedented collaboration by two of Vermont’s most celebrated museums — Bennington Museum and Southern Vermont Arts Center, Manchester. The collection came together for one reason: Lyman Orton, a man on a mission who believes art is history and has curated a living time capsule of life in Vermont and the painters who painted Vermont over decades. He is now sharing his collection with Vermonters and all who love Vermont.
The Orton Collection focuses primarily on work from 1920 to 1960 and includes many of the artists who set the stage for the Southern Vermont Arts Center. Many of these artists also had solo exhibitions at Bennington Museum between 1930 and 1960. The exhibition includes works on canvas, board, paper, and mixed media, everything from oil paintings to wood engravings to originals of Saturday Evening Post magazine cover illustrations.
According to Jamie Franklin, curator, Bennington Museum, “Lyman Orton’s collection is the largest collection of historic Vermont art in private hands -- that is to say, not in a museum or academic collection. Because Vermont is rural and because it is a place that is culturerich but money-poor, there haven’t
been a lot of independent efforts to focus on the artists who lived in Vermont and who depicted this place and the people who live here. Orton’s collection is the collection of Vermont art of the 20th century.”
More than 65 artists will be represented, including Rockwell Kent, John Clymer, Churchill Ettinger, Paul Sample, Mead Schaeffer, John Atherton, Marion Huse, Luigi Lucioni, Kyra Markham, Bernadine Custer, Milton Avery, and others. Many applied for work with the New Deal and the Federal Arts Project during the Great Depression. A significant part of the collection, about one-fifth, is artworks by Vermont women, as well as by women who journeyed into the mountains to draw and paint.
The exhibition showcases works by artists who became famous in their lifetimes, as well as artists that did not reach that level of achievement, yet they produced paintings of their time in Vermont, and that, Orton notes, “is the point of my collection. It’s more about capturing the essence of a place, learning from that.”
A “Vermonty” Experience: Orton believes art should be enjoyed and accessible to all — walking into a museum or art gallery should not be an intimidating experience. Museum-goers will experience a yesteryear coziness with contemporary artifacts and environments that illustrate the context of some of the
ditions for generations. An example of this —the museums are devoting their prime showing space to this exhibition which runs through the key tourist seasons —summer and fall foliage, closing on November 5, 2023. The exhibition For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection is about their love story, too. For the Love of Vermont: Two Museums, One Exhibition, July–October 2023

paintings—all to bring additional dimension and history to the artworks with explanatory descriptions posted in everyday language.
“It’s been rewarding to work with a collector who’s as passionate about the art as he is with making sure it’s presented in ways that will appeal and resonate with today’s audiences,” says Alison Crites, Manager of Exhibitions & Interpretive Engagement, SVAC. “His instincts and commitment align with trends in the broader museum field to redefine what effective exhibitions look and feel like in order to stay relevant.”
The Book: Along with the opening of the exhibition, a 220-page book tells the story of how Orton assembled the collection over many years while still running The Vermont Country Store. It is also packed with photographs of the paintings, as well as stories of the artists and their love of Vermont. For the Love of Vermont: The Lyman Orton Collection, authored in collaboration with Orton by Anita Rafael, a writer living and working in Wardsboro, VT, will be available in the spring at the Vermont Country Store and both museums.
Museums Embrace for the Love of Vermont

Lyman Orton has spent his life building The Vermont Country Store, collecting the art of Vermont, supporting Vermont non-profits, and exploring Vermont’s nature on cross-country skis and bicycles. His three sons, Cabot, Gardner, and Eliot, have taken over the business that Lyman’s parents, Vrest Orton and Mildred Wilcox, founded in 1946. Lyman lives in Manchester, VT, with his girlfriend, Janice Izzi. The two of them work together on Community Heart & Soul, a non-profit devoted to helping small cities and towns across America discover, articulate, and act from each town’s Heart & Soul, those elements that matter most to the residents. This bottom-up practice guides the future of towns.

Northshire Bookstore: family-owned, independent since 1976
Northshire Bookstore is a family-owned, independent bookstore that has provided the magic of literature for nearly five decades. With locations in Manchester, Vermont, and Saratoga Springs, New York, Northshire provides an unbeatable selection of books, gifts, toys, vinyl records, and more.
Sisters Cathleen Ihasz, Nicole Ihasz, and Ashley Ihasz-Austin assumed ownership of Northshire in late 2022, a natural fit for the three who grew up in the nearby town of Danby, Vermont. Fond childhood memories of exploring the Sci-Fi and music sections and purchasing early R.L. Stine books evoke nostalgia for the sisters, and their experience reflects the shared sentiment amongst many Northshire customers.
As Nicole explains, “There are people who’ve come here since they were kids and now are bringing their kids or even their grandchildren.”
Established in 1976, Northshire Bookstore’s flagship is located in the historic Colburn House in the heart of idyllic Manchester.
Formerly an Inn for a century, it was later transformed into the beloved bookstore.
Northshire’s employees are the heart of its business, with the influence of Manchester bookseller Alden Graves as a prime example. Alden is widely recognized within the local bookreading community, with his book recommendations causing titles to swiftly vanish from the shelves. Some customers exclusively seek his recommendations, highlighting his significant impact as a master bookseller. Always evolving, Northshire is committed to innovation and education through interactive author events, book signings, children’s story time, and more, providing a learning environment for customers across generations.

Single tickets are on sale now, and subscription packages are still available to purchase. For more information, please visit our website at mmfvt.org or call us at 802 362-1956.
We are pleased to announce that Philip Setzer has been appointed as our new Artistic Director. Philip is a founding member of the worldrenowned Emerson String Quartet and serves as a Distinguished Professor of Violin and Chamber Music at SUNY-Stony Brook. He is a Visiting Professor of Violin and Artistic Director of Strings Chamber Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Director of the Shouse Institute of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. Philip has also been a regular faculty member of the Isaac Stern Chamber Music Workshops at Carnegie Hall and the Jerusalem Music Center. He will begin his tenure in October to plan for and program MMF’s 50th (!) season in the summer of 2024, sure to delight audiences with the very best the classical music world has to offer. Philip’s reputation is stellar, his approach to programming is creative, and his passions for education and community engagement are contagious.
We look forward to what the future holds for Manchester Music Festival and the greater community with him as part of our leadership team.
MMF’s 49th season kicks off on Thursday, June 29, where the Emerson String Quartet will perform in Arkell Pavilion at Southern Ver-
mont Arts Center, the only Vermont stop on their worldwide farewell tour. This is a once-in-a-generation experience that you won’t want to miss! The quartet features Philip Setzer and Eugene Drucker, violins; Lawrence Dutton, viola; and Paul Watkins, cello. The program includes works by Felix Mendelssohn, Maurice Ravel, Sarah Kirkland Snider, and George Walker.
World-class chamber music still reigns supreme at Manchester Music Festival, with four MainStage performances Thursday evenings in July, in the Arkell Pavilion, SVAC. Our distinguished roster of familiar faces and luminary artists making their Festival debuts will showcase a veritable treasure trove of iconic masterpieces. At the July 20th concert, we are delighted that Philip Setzer will perform violin duo selections composed by Béla Bartók onstage with his former student, acclaimed guest artist Emily Daggett Smith. On Sundays in July, we present our Young Artists Concerts featuring ten pre-professional musicians, ages 18-26, who hail from some of the most prestigious music institutions in the world and who spend the summer honing their craft under the tutelage of MMF guest faculty artists.
There are several special concert events throughout the season, beginning with a Spotlight Solo recital and reception featuring pianist Adam Neiman’s performance of Robert Schumann’s Symphonic Études, on Saturday, July 8, in the Hunter Room at the Manchester Community Library, part of MCL’s Summer Music Series. On Monday, July 10, in the Yester House Gallery, SVAC, visiting artist Alexander Hersh headlines a fundraising event with a bravura cello recital and mixand-mingle reception, with a wine bar and savory bites presented by curATE café. On Friday, July 28, a Musicale & Mixer recital will be held in Arkell Pavilion, featuring
flutist Tara Helen O’Conner and pianist Ran Dan performing works by Liszt, Fauré, and Piazzola. A reception will follow, giving attendees a chance to socialize and get to know the artists up close and personal.
On Thursday, August 10, daring, virtuosic up-and-comer pianist Maxim Lando will perform works, including Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue; this Concert & Cocktails fundraiser takes place in the Music Tent in the Meadow at the Equinox Hotel.
On Tuesday, July 25, MMF partners with Green Mountain Academy of Lifelong Learning as GMALL presents IN CONVERSATION: The End of Classical Music is Vastly Overrated. Classical music has thrived for centuries and is one of the most powerful, moving, and enriching genres. But many say classical music is now facing its biggest challenges of all time. Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on its place in history and in today’s world with Philip Setzer and the hosts of Vermont Public Classical, Helen Lyons, and James Stewart. saukee in Meredith, NH, and has worked in the hospitality industry his entire life, including as General Manager of several other Vermont and Relais & Chateaux Inns and Hotels. Nick is originally from England but has extensive New England experience, especially in Vermont. Another new face at Taconic is Executive Chef Nicolas Houlbert, who brings more than 30 years of culinary experience to the hotel and Copper Grouse Restaurant & Bar. Our Taconic team would be happy to help you craft an itinerary, whether it includes hiking, exploring breweries and farms, fly fishing in the Battenkill River, skiing Stratton, exploring local museums and historic homes like Hildene (did you know we offer two adult tickets per stay to Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home?). Whether visiting or living nearby, please join us at the hotel that Travel + Leisure named one of the top three hotels in the Northeast and enjoy all that Vermont has to offer.
Good things growing at Abuela’s Plant Boutique & Floral Design Studio
Abuela’s Plant Boutique & Floral Design Studio is a new plant paradise in downtown Bennington, Vermont, by longtime florist Mari Bennett. Walking into the space, you are greeted by a technicolor paradise, multi-colored vases on handmade shelves filled with an abundance of seasonal flowers. Floating glass balls display even more flowers, such as Gerbera Daisies and giant sunflowers. If you are an orchid lover, you are in luck; you will find over 40 around the store, as they are one of Mari’s specialties. Amongst all this beauty, you will discover Mari, happy to dole out advice to novice and advanced gardeners alike.
The ribbon cutting happened on Cinco De Mayo, a fitting start for Abuala’s. The name is an homage to her mother’s shop, which had such a calming atmosphere that people often said they were “going to grandma’s” when going to her florist shop, and from the fact that Mari is an abuela herself; her son in law is Spanish and her beloved grandchildren call her abuela. Calling herself a ‘Vermont rooted
florist,’ owner Mari Bennett prides herself in growing most of her plants on her land and extensive greenhouses in Shafstbury, Vermont. She sources the rest from a trusted purveyor in Albany, NY.
Mari has deep roots in the plant business and Bennington itself. She will be familiar to many in the area as she has owned several businesses, including a construction company and restaurant. A third-generation Vermonter, she knows the people and the landscape intimately well. She carries on a tradition from her mother, which is to share the credit. She values the people that work with her, and if one of her employees wants to open up their own venture, she is there to provide mentorship and encouragement. The way Mari sees it, we are all part of the same community, and if someone wants to open up another florist or plant store, the more, the merrier.
Abuela’s was born out of a long tradition of plant purveyors in Bennington, as her mother opened a florist in Bennington in 1976. Mari began working at her mother’s
shop starting when she was 15; that’s when Mari got her driver’s license, her mother threw her car keys and told her to start making deliveries. She lost her mother only a few short years ago, in 2021, and she will always have a special place in her heart for Valentine’s Day, which is by far the busiest day of the year for florists.
For her latest venture, you can meander through several rooms with a book nestled between her gorgeous plants. Mari, like a fairy godmother of flowers, will be found handing out seeds, advice, and flowers, especially when she has a sense that someone needs them. She has a sixth sense for when someone could use a flower to brighten their day, and as she puts it, it costs nothing to show a little kindness to someone in need. She is also known to randomly go into local businesses to share her flowers; to her, it’s simple; she truly loves making people’s day and considers herself lucky to be able to share her plants and flowers with others.
There is nothing more Mari likes
than sharing her knowledge. She has hosted orchid-growing classes in the past and plans to host more in the future (check out her Facebook page for updates). This year for prom, she saw that her community was in need, so she worked out a deal for students, $30 for a corsage and boutonniere combo, where most places would charge two to three times that amount.
At Abuela’s, the plants and flowers are always guaranteed. Mari personally writes instructions for care and gives her business card to make sure people can always get in touch if they have questions. You certainly would not expect that when shopping at a box store, and that is what sets Abuela’s apart. When you step into the shop, you are immediately a valued community member, whether you are there to buy one flower or 100.
Abuela’s Plant Boutique is open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. It is located in the Benmont Mill at 160 Benmont Ave. in Bennington.
Be a part of the Latchis Theatre legacy
In 1901, the Latchis family came to Brattleboro and built their first movie theater in 1920. Since then, The Latchis Theatre has built an incredible legacy in Brattleboro and the surrounding areas and has been iconic in the town for over 100 years. Delayed for one day by the Great New England Hurricane, aka The Long Island Express, the Grand Opening of the Latchis Memorial Theatre occurred on September 22, 1938. The non-profit Latchis Arts purchased the for-profit Latchis Corporation in 2003, and it currently operates as a multi-use venue that features a four-screen art deco theatre with first-run, arthouse, indie, and special film programs, as well as a live performance space, hotel, bar/venue, and retail spaces.
In addition to the theatre, the Latchis Memorial Building boasts a 30-room independent hotel serving tourists and all kinds of visitors and business travelers. Additional leased spaces include the Evan James jewelry store, The Latchis Pub & Underground, a retail store (coming soon!), Express Fluency (a language learning school), a studio of Vermont Public Radio, and several offices and studios. The stunning historical features of the building, hotel, and especially our Main Theatre are awe-inspiring.
Distinctive in its “Greco Deco” style, blending Art Deco elements with Greek-inspired decor, the Main Theatre stands as a testament to the Latchis’ uniqueness. While other
theaters in the area typically focus solely on live events or film screenings, our establishment embraces a harmonious blend of both. Serving a wide and diverse audience, ranging from local movie-goers and patrons of all ages and economic backgrounds to tourists exploring the area, we have remained an invaluable asset to the community for 85 years. What truly sets us apart is the collaborative effort between our non-profit and for-profit entities, working hand-in-hand to create a remarkable cultural hub.
The Latchis takes immense pride in the positive impact we have on our community. Many of the special events we host serve as fundraisers for other organizations and causes, raising over $1 million in the past decade or so. All of us at the Latchis are grateful for the unwavering support we have received, which has enabled us to navigate through challenging times, including the pandemic. Unlike many theaters across the country, the Latchis has managed to weather the storm, a testament to the incredible support we receive from the local community. What truly distinguishes our organization is the fact that we are not simply a faceless corporation. We comprise local individuals who are deeply rooted in the community. We value open collaboration and eagerly welcome new ideas and partnerships that further enrich the vibrant creative tapestry for which Brattleboro is renowned. Jon Potter,
the Executive Director of Latchis Arts and Latchis Corporation, brings a wealth of experience from his journalism background, having spent 15 years at the Brattleboro Reformer, 11 of which he served as the Arts Editor. With a passion for supporting the creative sector, Jon’s role at the Latchis is nothing short of a dream come true, allowing him to forge meaningful connections within our community. Having previously worked closely with the arts
community, Jon is uniquely qualified to foster the arts through the Latchis. We are always thrilled to embark on fresh collaborations and remain committed to the belief that together, we can make a positive difference in our community.
The Latchis Theatre stands as a beacon of cultural vibrancy in Brattleboro.. With our rich history, diverse programming, and strong community bonds, we invite you to be a part of that legacy.

Their journey began in the US with its origins in Easthampton Rubber Thread Company, founded in 1863, and then subsequently founded Fulflex in 1932. They can trace the lineage of their company to the Maharashtra state in India, which stems from the Garware Business House, founded in 1933, the pioneers in nylon tire cords, plastics, polyester films, shipping, paints, ropes, and nets in the country. Garware and Fulflex came together to form Garware Fulflex in 2018, the global leader by far in their field of business. Purple Sarah Skin and Nail Care meets all your self-care needs
With 20 years of experience, I am so excited that my business has exceeded my expectations after 3 and a half years in this warm and welcoming community. I opened in January 2020, and in an all too common refrain for businesses that opened around this time, I was mandated closed when Covid hit from mid-March to June 3rd, after only being open two and a half months. Not only did we manage to stay open, we somehow thrived thru Covid all by word of mouth, especially as people realized the importance of self-care during those trying times.
I grew up locally. David and Andrea Whitman were my mentors. I took their advice and moved away to go to a large cosmetology school and get experience in big city spas. After ten years at two of the top spas in central MA and many freelance makeup gigs, I moved back to the area with a dream to bring the Brattleboro area its first fullscale spa. By the 4 year mark, I will have gone from a 3 room mini spa with a renter and one employee to my dream spa.
Being a smaller-scale business at the time and all employees alternating hours to be the only ones in the space with a single
client has really helped us grow and flourish. We are now working a normal schedule and can offer double pedicures and luxurious spa days. Every year since opening, we have added more space, services, and staff. We are delighted that demand outpaces our capacity, which is not a bad problem to have! Our next and hopefully final expansion will quadruple our space and staff to give the area its first full-scale day spa.
I am proud that I have continued to receive so many positive reviews, just like this one:
“Top Notch!!! Sweet little spa in Brattleboro. I have been here for manicures and pedicures by both Lisa and Bridgette. It is always so cozy and intimate. Much better service than the big nails-only places in the area the owner is so professional and Knowledgable as well as warm. Looking forward to trying more services!”
-Lorie Cartwright, Google reviews

The Equinox resort, renowned for its luxurious ambiance, invites you to experience not only opulence but also a captivating historical journey.
Since 1769, The Equinox has been a cherished destination, attracting American Revolutionaries, esteemed presidents, and countless guests seeking exceptional hospitality.
Delve into its revolutionary beginnings as the Marsh Tavern, where the local Council of Safety held its inaugural meetings. It was here that Ira, the younger brother of Ethan Allen, proposed a bold measure to raise funds for the Green Mountain Boys by confiscating Tory properties. As fate would have it, Marsh House became the first property expropriated after its owner, William Marsh, declared allegiance to the British.
Thaddeus Munson subsequently purchased the tavern, transforming it into Thaddeus Munson’s New Inn. Over the years, it changed hands multiple times, assuming different names such as Widow Black’s Inn, Vanderlip’s Hotel, the Taconic, and the Orvis Hotel. In 1839, owner Martin Vanderlip left an indelible mark on the inn by adding enduring fluted columns to its front, which have now become synonymous with The Equinox.
In 1853, the magnificent 200-room Equinox House emerged, heralding the precursor to the exceptional establishment we know today. The north wing of the inn stands as the original Orvis family homestead, its fireplace still offering warmth and comfort to our guests within the Chop House
restaurant. The personal touch that we offer. For being such a large hotel, we truly try to make every experience our guests have intimate, personal, and based on their needs and wants.
While recent times presented challenges, with a two-year closure following the COVID-19 pandemic, The Dormy Grill at the Equinox is poised to reclaim its splendor. As the hospitality industry faced staffing shortages, we are eagerly preparing to reopen, focusing on serving the needs of our guests old and new. Our revamped menu for Dormy Grill, crafted by our head chef Joseph Stewart, offers an approachable selection that caters to diverse tastes. We are a fun-loving casual environment that offers a little bit of everything culinary-wise. We like to have fun but take building flavors on our plates very seriously. From our mouthwatering two-patty burger to the irresistible artichoke dip and delectable fresh hand pies, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels like a local. Nestled in picturesque Manchester, our resort boasts some of the finest views in the area. Golf enthusiasts can even call in their orders while on the 8th hole, ensuring a timely and delicious meal upon their return.
For those seeking an elevated dining experience, our Chophouse restaurant presents a high-end menu on two select days each week. Embracing a New American concept, our culinary offerings cater to various preferences, striking the perfect balance between upscale and affordable. Join us in the first week of June, from the 5th to the 6th, as we introduce a new selection of
comforting yet refined dishes, blending accessible flavors with a touch of sophistication. Our commitment to sourcing locally is unwavering, as we prioritize using ingredients from nearby farms, showcasing the best of Vermont’s bounty. From VT-raised beef and pork to the finest cheddar, maple, and apples, we strive to create a culinary experience that truly embodies the essence of our beloved region. Notable suppliers such as Wilcox Farms contribute their exceptional beef and pork, while small vendors and producers, including Sugar Bob Smoked Maple Products, add unique touches to our offerings.

Spent my first 10yrs cooking, cooking in NYC kitchens. He has cooked for three presidents (Clinton, Bush, Trump). He loves reading, with James Patterson being a favorite, and you can often find him at local farmer’s markets. He Loves small-town living. His career has given him extensive experience in renowned establishments such as Laurent BLT in San Juan, PR, and St. Regis in Aspen, CO, bringing a wealth of culinary expertise to The Equinox. Influenced by diverse regions, his repertoire blends the flavors and techniques of open-fire cooking in Colorado, the tantalizing nuances of Nashville BBQ, the Southern flair from Virginia, and the vibrant Latin inspirations from Puerto Rico. Drawing inspiration from his peers on the kitchen line, he has honed his skills and developed a glob-
al-inspired menu that tantalizes taste buds. From enticing street tacos to a vegan steak filet Oscar and the exotic Latin-infused Farrow Island salmon with lime crema, every dish showcases his culinary artistry.

Meet the experts at Hoffman Real Estate
Ever since obtaining her broker’s license in 2015, Jenifer Prouty Hoffman knew someday she would run her own boutique brokerage. Although launching during the pandemic may have seemed like a risky move, the shutdown allowed her to step back from day-to-day marketing and sales - and focus on opening her own business. Some parts of the job came naturally to her, while others she had to learn along the way. This is why she is constantly engaged in continuing education and is a volunteer leader within the Realtor organization. Collaborating with other top professionals around the country inspires her to never stop learning and growing.
Among Jenifer’s many accomplishments, she was named an Emerging Leader in 2020 by local young professional organizations and Who’s Who in America 2022. She served on the South Central Vermont Board of Realtors (SCVBR), which currently has 180 members and 25+ affiliates, stepping up first in 2019 as PresidentElect, then becoming 2020 President. COVID derailed her plans for in-person education and fun social events, and created other priorities like following the governor’s orders to protect the health and safety of her members and the public, so like the rest of the world, she had to pivot. She rose to the challenge – both the local and state associations named her REALTOR of the Year 2021.
None of this is possible without an excellent team, however, and Hoffman Real Estate has some of the best. Their motto is true: “Real People. Real Heart. Real Experience.”
They genuinely care about their clients and go above and beyond to understand and best serve their unique needs and goals. Here is an introduction to Hoffman’s fabulous team:
Jenifer Hoffman: Always committed to continually honing her craft, Jenifer embarked in January 2023 on a year-long journey at NAR’s Leadership Academy. This incredibly competitive program accepts only 20 Realtors annually into this prestigious training program. She is surrounded by the best and brightest in the country. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime and she can’t wait to share the knowledge she gains to continue to help her colleagues and community. For a “small-town girl,” she is blown away at the life she has today because of real estate and sees her role in this industry as ever-expanding. Being of service to others and contributing positively to her hometown makes her immensely proud yet humbled for the opportunity to make a difference.
Erika Floriani: Born and raised over the border in Williamstown, MA, Erika has been in southern Vermont all of her adult life, raising her 3 boys here. In addition to selling real estate, Erika works for the Chamber of Commerce as their Membership Manager. She is acutely aware of the businesses and non-profits around the region and is exceptional at building relationships. She is a tremendous asset for relocating home buyers and introducing them to our beautiful region!
Brie Burdge: Like Jenifer, Brie is a native Benningtonian. She has deep roots in both the area and in real estate… her grandfather was a real estate agent, too! Formerly a paralegal for a real estate attorney, Brie brings a valuable skill set to clients. She is raising two daughters, has a tightknit family, and loves exploring new venues and nearby lakes.
Nicole Ivy: Newly licensed, but with several transactions under her belt as both a buyer and a seller,
Nicole is eager to soak up the team’s collective knowledge and build her chops working with investors and homeowners alike. Currently under construction on her own home renovation project in North Bennington, she is raising her daughter to be creative and strong like mom. Nicole also teaches computer science and mapping at the Community College of Vermont in Brattleboro and Rutland, and writes science fiction stories.
Jon Hoffman: A true family affair, Jenifer’s husband is a Builder/ General contractor with 40 years of experience. Being a Master craftsman and adhering to Vermont’s Residential Building Energy Standards (RBES) sets him apart. He has built several green homes, including their own, which is solar powered and uses heat pumps. Jon is an asset to the team, whether it’s meeting with land buyers who want to build from the ground up or existing home buyers/sellers who need a professional’s opinion or estimates with no obligation. He enjoys hunting, biking, swimming, working out, and training their German Shepherd, Rex.
Nothing tells the story better than the words of former clients. Here are some testimonials from some very satisfied buyers and sellers.
“I cannot put into words how wonderful Jenifer is. Very professional, knows everything about the area, and super friendly. I still bother her with emails and she responds right away with the answer. She is simply the best (like Tina Turner). Every time I pull into my driveway the GPS says, “Welcome home,” and I smile and think of how much I love my home and how caring Jenifer is.””
-Michael Lombard | Bought in Bennington, VT
“While we had experience at buying homes, we had never sold one before! Jenifer and Erika made the process painless, which was amazing considering that they were required to work with a relocation company selected by my employer, during Fall of 2020 with many Covid rules in place, while we were relocating 6 states away! When we return to Vermont, and specifically the Bennington area, we will definitely re-engage with Hoffman Real Estate!”

Walloomsac River Theatre Company presents ‘Firebringer’
Vinny Tatro was born and raised in Bennington, VT, and he could not love his hometown area more. He is the WRTC President/Artistic & Executive Director of Walloomsac River Theatre Company. WRTC is an IRS-approved 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit community theater company that produces 4 full-scale community theater productions a year and was established in July of 2022. WRTC’s first production ever was “Vanities” by Jack Heifner, Directed by Vincent Tatro, Performed in the basement at the Sage Street Mill in North Bennington, Vermont.
Vinny has loved the theater arts since the 2nd grade when he saw Molly Stark Elementary’s production of “Honk Jr The Musical,” Directed by Lynn Sweet. It was flawlessly inspiring. After his initial inspiration in elementary school, he went on to be very involved in Mt. Anthony Union High School’s music and drama departments. Since then, he has devoted his studies to the theater arts. He attended Castleton University to study Acting & Directing, earning BA in Acting & Directing and a BS in Public Relations. There, he learned that a theatrical production does not have to be big, perfect, or professional to be great art.
“This is my first experience with WRTC. The energy and atmosphere is so welcoming, so inviting. I’m having such an awesome time getting to know the cast and I can’t wait to perform alongside them!”

By collaborating with artists from local and surrounding areas, we cultivate and nurture an equal opportunity for the community to engage with the performance arts.
Green Mountain Spinnery: A knitter’s treat
Green Mountain Spinnery has been around for over 40 years and has prided itself on always being a worker-owned co-operative. Since its founding in 1981, they have been highly dedicated to designing and producing richly colored, must-touch classic and contemporary yarns. What began as a way to sustain local sheep (and even raised sheep themselves) has grown into a business that excels at custom yarn processing and continues to wow customers with the range and quality of its products as well as outstanding customer service.
To this day, the goals remain unchanged: to create the highest quality yarns, help sustain regional sheep farming, and find ways to use natural resources wisely. All of this is reflected in their manufacturing processes. Green Mountain Spinnery is one of the few Certified Organic wool mills in the United States. Their yarns are not processed with harsh chemicals and retain the natural qualities of the fibers they are made of. They
have developed innovative ways to deal with waste products, including recycling.
Committed to the concept of thinking globally while acting locally, they also consider the environment by developing environmentally sound ways to process natural fibers. They spin custom yarn for fiber producers across the country (and many local farms), as well as a full line of yarns on offer for sale in the Mill Shop. Mill tours provide fiber enthusiasts with a unique opportunity to see how yarn is produced on vintage machinery. It’s almost like a trip back in time.
The Spinnery’s small shop offers all our yarns and knitting patterns as well as limited edition yarns and mill ends at reduced prices. The shop also carries needles, knitting books and magazines, and buttons. You’ll be able to see display models of Vermont Designer Patterns knit in Green Mountain Spinnery yarns. Most of the fibers used in their yarns — alpaca, mohair, wool, TENCEL®,
and organic cotton — are grown in the United States.
Green Mountain Spinnery boasts a perfect rating on Google reviews. Here is what one reviewer had to say.
“Such a charming place to visit! Kate was a fantastic host during our tour of this fascinating process. I was surprised that my son (6 years old) was intrigued by the process as well. I was able to leave with enough lovely yarn for a few projects, as well as a whole new appreciation for the work and heart that goes into the processing of the fibre. I will keep this in mind with each stitch I make with this yarn.”
— M. KH, Google Reviews.
So whether you are a novice or an expert knitter, Green Mountain Spinnery has something for everyone. Stop by and see why this knit store has been beloved in the community for so many years.
Not to be missed is this year’s 1-91 Shop Hop (August 7-19, 2023). As one of 8 participating shops from New Haven, CT to Putney,
VT, there is sure to be plenty of fun, fiber, and fantastic prizes. Please find more information by following Shop Hop’s Facebook page here!

couch + cork brings the wine online
couch + cork is one of the most interesting and innovative businesses in the Bennington, VT, area. What is interesting about them is that they had two beginnings. In May 2019, they launched the original with just in-home tastings and only planned on this being a side gig. When the pandemic hit, they moved to virtual, and it took off for obvious reasons. Many people craving social interaction embraced the virtual world to fill the gap left by a lack of human interaction. couch + cork offers everything from in-home, virtual, corporate virtual wine tastings, private chef services, bar catering, and small wine-focused event planning.
While the appetite for virtual tastings for local customers may have waned, owner Nancy Koziol has more than made up for that by offering her virtual tastings to clients both further afield and overseas.
A former French colleague began sending clients that were either at an inconvenient time due to timezone differences or clients she did not have the capacity to take on. couch + cork’s French colleague has since gone back to doing only in-person tastings, and couch + cork took this opportunity to buy this colleague’s company, corporatevirtualwinetastings.com. The diverse clientele they inherited includes Amazon, Doordash, Fenwick + West, Bayer, and Square.
They work with local inns, like Rockwell’s Retreat (and they are very much open to working with more!), and vacation rental properties. The tastings can be highly personalized, and if the customers are interested in custom pairing for their wine tasting, that can be arranged using one of couch + cork’s own private chefs. One thing that gives some potential customers pause is the ease of such events. Vermont has notoriously strict liquor laws, but be rest assured, couch + cork has all the proper licenses and insurance for any type of private tasting.
So much of the business for couch + cork is by word-of-mouth, but that’s a good thing, as people usually walk away with a new appreciation for wine. Many of their clients have been intimidated by wine tastings, which have been perpetrated by an
industry that can be intimidating and narrow in how they target clientele. An example of some personalized experiences are requests for milestone anniversary tastings where wine from where the couple’s honeymoon is featured or for Genevieve Plunkett’s collection of short stories, Prepare Her. Genevieve sent me the lines from a few excerpts she would read. I read the stories, and they paired a wine with each. couch + cork prides itself on sourcing inspiration from many places. A huge inspiration to the ethos of couch + cork is Wine Folly.
What sets Wine Folly apart is how digestible the content is. Madeline Puckette, the writer of Wine Folly, seems like someone you could talk to at a bar. When couch + cork began, it was because the founder felt, “out of her depth” while pursuing wine education. She wanted wine to be approachable. Before this, owner Nancy Koziol was a middle school educator. She learned that her approach had to be highly personalized and took these learnings into cork + couch. This is why she says they are so personalized and sassy. According to owner Nancy Koziol.
“Wine is a VERY traditional industry, and it’s not super welcoming to women. Hospitality is a beast for women, and just look at all the stuff that’s come to light about sexual harassment in the Court of Master Sommeliers. By being underrepresented in wine, as women, we’re not just carving out a space, but it’s important when people taste with us that they see people that don’t necessarily look like wine people.”
Her customers agree. In a recent piece by the Bennington Banner, Tory Rich writes.
“I’m an unrefined, gas-stationpizza-eating, football-watching Neanderthal. Wine (and alcohol in general) isn’t really my thing…I was incorrect. Little did I know, I land squarely in Koziol’s target demographic — anyone with an open mind that likes to learn and is up for a fun night. This was a room full of normal people that just like wine.”
The experts at couch + cork are well aware that many folks simply don’t know what they want in a wine tasting, which is why they created 10 Things Everybody Should Know About Wine (Even You!), which was born of the pandemic. This course is perfect for mixed groups as it offers foundational knowledge while gauging the class’s interest in various wine topics. When asked about particular areas of interest, couch + cork offered that often a lot of their choices are around what we’ve been drinking/learning/geeking out about. They like to focus on winemakers we know/have met and winemakers from marginalized groups. Naidu Wines, Theopolis Wines, Greek wines. couch + cork was part of the effort to make sure Black-made wines were available at shops in Vermont.
The greatest compliment they receive is when people feel relieved. Usually, within a few minutes of tasting with us, they’ll say, “Okay, this is NOT what I thought it was going to be.” There’s a lot of anxiety around wine and doing it “right,” but at the end of the day, for us, it’s about enjoyment. So, for novices, experts, and people who think they may like wine but aren’t sure yet, treat yourself to a couch + cork tasting, and prepare to unlock a new passion in your life.

Community health a priority at Grace Cottage Hospital
From its humble origin in 1938 as the office of country doctor Carlos G. Otis, Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend has succeeded by building a team of care providers who are invested in the community they serve because it’s the community they live in.
“It’s old fashioned health care provided with high technology tools, combining the best of both worlds,” said Andrea Seaton, senior director of development and marketing.
The mission of Grace Cottage Hospital’s 200 employees is to provide compassionate, high-quality healthcare services to its community.
“Everyone at Grace Cottage is caring, professional, kind and personable,” said Gloria Hall, of Oxford, Conn. “The people are so kind and thoughtful. It’s the best hospital I have ever been in.”
While Grace Cottage is small compared to other hospitals around the state and country, its size makes possible the warm, individualized, and professional care upon which it has built its well-deserved reputation.
“Everyone there is so nice and knowledgeable,” said Donna Rice, of Grafton, about the care she re-
ceived. “They’d do anything for you, and it’s nice because it’s small. Everyone I’ve come into contact with at Grace Cottage loves working there, and it shows.”
This year, Grace Cottage was named by Vermont Business Magazine, the Vermont State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management, and the Vermont Department of Commerce and Community Development and Workforce Research Group as one of Vermont’s Best Places To Work.
It was the only hospital in the state to receive that award in 2023.
And in 2022, Grace Cottage earned an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer” designation in the national Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Healthcare Equality Index. Only two Vermont hospitals, Grace Cottage and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, earned “Top Performer” status with scores of 95 out of 100.
Dr. Otis opened Grace Cottage Hospital in 1949 with a bequest from Dr. Abel Grout, and is named after Grout’s wife, Grace.
From the beginning, the community was quick to respond with do-
nations and fund drives, a spirit that continues to this day.
“It’s thanks to our very generous community that we’re able to raise about $2 million a year to help fund our operations,” said Seaton. Without that community support, she said, Grace Cottage couldn’t fulfill its mission of delivering comprehensive medical care in a kind and compassionate manner and couldn’t continue to attract quality care providers who want to both connect with the people they serve and to enjoy the quality of life offered by rural Vermont.
When Grace Cottage developed plans to renovate its Emergency Department, the community rallied in support, raising the necessary funds. With the project nearing completion Grace Cottage is setting its sights on building a new Rural Health Clinic to serve its expanding customer base.
In 2018, Grace Cottage recorded 20,000 patient visits, That number increased to 31,000 this past year.
“I came to Grace Cottage five years ago because I have a passion for community health,” said CEO and President Doug DiVello. “I think the reason for our hospital’s increasing success is our commitment to providing increased access to primary care. We have 13 medi-
cal professionals in our Grace Cottage Family Health Clinic who are providing over 31,000 patient visits per year, up from 20,000 just five years ago. We are firing on all cylinders, with increased demand in our Emergency Department and our outpatient physical and occupational therapy departments as well. We wouldn’t be able to provide all of this excellent care for our community if it weren’t for our loyal, skilled, and dedicated employees, who all work hard every day, sustaining and building upon our deep and abiding culture of compassionate and professional care for the communities we serve.”
Grace Cottage Hospital’s focus is on improving the overall health and wellness of the community it serves by offering preventive care, educational and wellness programs, mental health care, outpatient rehabilitation and a retail pharmacy.
Grace Cottage recognizes the importance of teamwork and collaboration among its staff members and actively fosters an environment where healthcare professionals work together effectively to provide the best care possible.

Historic charm at The Colonel Williams Inn
My husband, Brian, our daughter, Chelsea, and I (Victoria Osborne) made the decision to relocate from Austin, Texas, to Vermont a few years ago (without ever having been to the state before) after finding this remarkable property. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of organizing and managing a diverse range of events, from youth basketball expos to prestigious occasions for clients like the University of Texas and the United Nations. However, my heart truly belongs to hosting weddings. As my own husband and I didn’t have a wedding ourselves, it brings me immense joy to be able to share in the love and happiness of each couple’s special day.
With a history dating back to 1769, this dairy farm underwent a remarkable transformation in the 1960s when it evolved into an enchanting inn. Hosting weddings has been an integral part of this establishment since the 1980s. The property, originally built by Colonel William Williams, served as the foundation for the dairy farm, while the inn was founded by Isabel Hartenbach.
It is worth noting that our premises witnessed the very first romance and engagement in Marlboro. The house within these walls played host to the town’s initial courtship in 1770. Dinah Fay, who accompanied Colonel Williams’ family from Northburo, Massachusetts, crossed paths with Perez Stockwell, an established resident of Marlboro. Their union in the autumn of 1771 marked the first recorded marriage in Marlboro, a truly special milestone.
What sets us apart is our commit-
ment to hosting only one wedding per weekend, ensuring that our guests can unwind and savor every moment with their loved ones. To further enhance their stay, we offer made-toorder breakfasts for our inn guests, featuring unique recipes such as potato chip omelets and pan-seared Irish steel-cut oats, all crafted with local ingredients. As the chef/owner, I infuse my Texas roots into our menu, including delightful breakfast tacos every Sunday and mouthwatering Texas BBQ for rehearsal dinners and other catering services. Not to be missed is my grandmother’s legendary Texas Sheet Cake, a cherished family recipe.
At our establishment, we prioritize creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere, which may understandably make some individuals apprehensive. However, rest assured that even though we enjoy ourselves, we main-
tain the utmost professionalism, ensuring seamless and fuss-free execution of our events. Our comprehensive packages encompass a wide array of services, including tables, chairs, linens, lighting, decor, a dedicated staff, buffet serving items, vintage mixed china or elegant white dishes, glassware, flatware, and the invaluable expertise of a day-of wedding/event coordinator. And that’s just the beginning!
While our historic inn harbors at least five resident spirits, including a mischievous child and a recent feline addition, their presence adds a certain charm. We occasionally hear gentle knocks, whispers in the air, footsteps echoing through the hallways, and even playful antics like the cat strolling across beds. Shadows dancing beyond closed doors and discovering money on freshly cleaned
floors are among the more intriguing encounters. Numerous self-proclaimed psychics and sensitives have attested to the spirits’ contentment here, emphasizing the property’s profoundly positive energy—a sentiment I wholeheartedly share. Our commitment to delivering exceptional service while working within our clients’ budgets sets us apart. We firmly believe that everyone should be able to realize their dream event without the burden of debt and excessive stress. As advocates of the local community, we proudly endorse and collaborate with outstanding vendors in catering, floral arrangements, photography, and music. Treating people with respect and grace is a core value instilled in me, owing to my Southern heritage and certainly a sense of hospitality that I share with my fellow Vermonters. It fills me with indescribable joy when a guest shares that they experienced “the best sleep in months,” compliments our delectable breakfast, or declares their wedding to be nothing short of perfection.
I find immense fulfillment when I can make others happy, which I suppose is a pretty great trait for an innkeeper to have. So whether you are planning your dream day or embracing the beauty of your local area, I am here to help you simply get away or to help you plan your dream day. Stop by the Inn and see what the fuss is all about!
Sincerely,
Victoria
