SWEETm Distributed hotel in Amsterdam

Hotel diffuso ad Amsterdam Distributed Hotel in Amsterdam I micro edifici un tempo utilizzati per la gestione del traffico sui canali – firmati anche da importanti architetti del XX secolo – sono diventati camere d’albergo che consentono una fruizione inedita della città. Per presentare il proprio progetto di ospitalità diffusa Sweets, Space&Matter ha esposto al centro Arcam di Amsterdam le maquette dei caselli fluviali interessati dall’iniziativa.

Dall’alto in senso orario, la stanza 204 (Hortusbrug), la 207 (Nieuwe Amstelbrug), la 307 (Wiegbrug) e la 208 (Berlagebrug).

Amsterdam è attraversata da due principali arterie di navigazione, a ovest il Kostverlorenvaart, a est il fiume Amstel. Per mantenere sotto controllo l’intenso traffico fluviale lungo questi assi per tanti anni sono stati utilizzati dei piccoli “caselli”, luoghi di lavoro e spesso anche abitazioni dei custodi delle acque. L’introduzione di sistemi di controllo meccanizzati ha però reso inutile la presenza dell’uomo, di conseguenza anche degli edifici. Il tema della riconversione di questi caselli è stato posto per la prima volta nel 2013 da una ricerca esposta al centro per l’architettura Arcam di Amsterdam. Amsterdam is crossed by two main navigation arteries, the Kostverlorenvaart in the west and the river Amstel in the east. For many years small “bridge houses”, places of work that often also served as homes for the bridge men, were used to keep the busy river traffic on these axes under control. However, the introduction of advanced central operating systems has made the human presence unnecessary, and so these buildings have lost their role. The question of the conversion of these bridge houses was raised for the first time in 2013 by a study shown at the ARCAM centre for architecture in Amsterdam. Thanks to the Sweets project carried out by Space&Matter (born out of a collaboration with Grayfield and the founders of Lloyd Hotel and Cultural Embassy, Suzanne Oxenaar, Otto Nan and Gerrit Groen), work has begun on the transformation of 28 of these small structures into hotel rooms. Space&Matter, an agency run by architect-entrepreneurs, was already well known for its creative rehabilitation of the former De Ceuvel shipyard, fitted out with houseboats relocated on land and now used to host various youth-centered enterprises. This important precedent persuaded the government to back the Sweets project. The name is a play on the word

Space&Matter, un’agenzia di architetti-imprenditori, era già nota per il recupero creativo dell’ex cantiere navale De Ceuvel allestito con case galleggianti che oggi, ricollocate a terra, ospitano imprese giovanili. Questo importante precedente ha convinto l’amministrazione pubblica a intraprendere il progetto Sweets, nome che ricorda la parola “suite” ma si riferisce anche letteralmente a queste costruzioni come a caramelle sparse per la città.

Circa un terzo delle suite urbane è già disponibile e prenotabile, le restanti saranno aperte al pubblico entro il 2021. Alcuni ex caselli sono opera di grandi architetti olandesi del XX secolo come Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Dirk Sterenberg, Pieter Lodewijk Kramer, Joan Melchior van der Mey. Alcune camere si trovano in centro, altre in zone più tranquille, sempre con una vista spettacolare sui canali animati dal continuo passaggio delle imbarcazioni.

Anche Sweets, come Airbnb, offre una mappa interattiva con l’ubicazione delle 28 stanze e tutte le informazioni necessarie per raggiungere la propria destinazione, così come alcuni cenni storici sull’architettura. Nella pagina web

A volte sono posizionati in aree semi-periferiche, lontani dal trambusto, e altre in angoli di città nascosti.

L’Amstelschutsluis (a sinistra) è uno dei più peculiari: si trova in mezzo al fiume Amstel ed è completamente circondato dall’acqua, raggiungibile solo attraverso uno stretto ponte di legno.

The 28 bridge houses were built of iron, steel, wood and concrete over the course of the last 100 years and are extremely varied in their characteristics.

Some of them are located in semi-suburban areas, far from the bustle of the centre, and others in hidden corners of the city. The Amstelschutsluis (left) is one of the most peculiar: it stands in the middle of the river Amstel, completely surrounded by water, and can only be reached by a narrow wooden bridge.

About a third of the urban suites are already available and can be booked, while the rest will be open to the public by 2021. Some of the former bridge houses were designed by great Dutch architects of the 20th century like Hendrik Petrus Berlage, Dirk Sterenberg, Pieter Lodewijk Kramer and Joan Melchior van der Mey. A number of the rooms are located in the centre of town, others in quieter areas, but they always have a spectacular view of the canals and the continual passage of boats.
