THE LEGACY BEFORE US

ANNUAL REPORT 2021–2022

BUILDING A LEGACY: YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from the New Hampton School community during the past year. We accomplished quite a lot together, including the following highlights:

✓ The successful launch of the $30M Bicentennial Campaign.

✓ A fun and meaningful Reunion Weekend with over 750 people in attendance throughout the weekend, capped off by an unforgettable Bicentennial Gala.

✓ Record-breaking alumni participation in philanthropic support.

Your commitment to the values that New Hampton School represents — respect, responsibility, and an inclusive, nurturing learning environment — is most evident in your generous donations to our school. Financial aid made possible by the endowment empowers deserving students to enjoy the full NHS experience, regardless of their family resources.

We set a goal of $30M for the Campaign under the banner of “The Legacy Before Us.” We feel that this title serves as both a celebration of our past and as a call to help ensure that future students benefit from the same education and experience that so many With gratitude,

of us enjoyed. We are delighted to report that we are well positioned to meet — and even exceed — this goal.

The generosity of so many alumni, families, employees, and friends is inspiring. On the following pages, you’ll find the names of donors and volunteers who have helped make the New Hampton School experience possible. The sheer number of names speaks to just how special this community is.

Your commitment to New Hampton School will help sustain our current momentum long into the future.

“To ensure New Hampton students receiving significant financial aid have an experience like other students, we have to go beyond just supporting tuition. Our highneed students require access to funds so they can be a fully integrated student on campus and not have to worry or feel less than their peers. For them to thrive and have a true New Hampton experience, it is our hope we can provide access to funding for these items.”

Non-Tuition Financial Aid

“Strengthening our School’s endowment will impact our ability to enroll the most dynamic and talented students we can find, across the socioeconomic plane, making NHS a viable option for years to come. My wife Barbara and I are thrilled to leave our legacy through our gifts to the school’s endowment, building projects and Annual Fund. It is our hope to provide access and support the next generation of deserving New Hampton School students.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2021–2022 3
WORK
Goal ........ $1,000,000
On average, a student who receives a full scholarship to New Hampton School still needs financial support for access to the complete experience. Currently, we do not have funds set aside exclusively to provide financial support above and beyond tuition for our high-need students. As such, many students with financial needs are not able to experience all that New Hampton School offers and must opt out of certain activities that interest them. It is our hope to be able to provide appropriate access and financial support for these students so that they can have a full and robust New Hampton School experience based on their interests, regardless of cost.

INSTILLING A LOVE OF LEARNING

“I struggled as a student,” Earl “Skip” Lewis recalls of his elementary and early high school years. “I had trouble reading — the letters would get transposed. Back then, dyslexia wasn’t really known, understood, or diagnosed.” Skip says that the untreated dyslexia made learning not just difficult but also a chore — and his grades reflected it. “I got by, but just barely. The fact is that I didn’t really like learning.”

Things turned around, however, when he transferred to New Hampton School for his junior and senior years.

“The headmaster at the time, T. Holmes Moore, was a big influence on me,” Skip says. “He and the teachers I had were so patient. They made me curious, and for the first time, I began to like learning.”

Another factor that Skip attributes to his newfound interest in learning was New Hampton’s setting. “There just weren’t a lot of the usual distractions of other high schools,” he says. “The campus was — still is —

beautiful, and being relatively isolated, geographically, made the living and learning experience more social. We learned with and from each other.”

Skip’s wife, Barbara, is as enthusiastic about New Hampton as her husband is. “New Hampton has always been a special place, a great place to learn with an outstand ing faculty,” she says. “Being a teacher, I know that most students want to do well and please their teachers. A good teacher can have a tremendous impact on someone’s life, and NHS has a lot of great teachers.”

After New Hampton, Skip attended Clarkson University in New York, where he majored in science. He then went on to build a highly successful career, including two decades as Chairman, President, and CEO of FLIR Systems, a global leader in the design and manufacture of thermal imaging infrared cameras. Skip is passionate about the importance of education. He currently serves as a Trustee at Clarkson University, as well as a Trustee and generous benefactor for New Hampton School, funding numerous improvement projects over the years and, most recently, the Lewis Scholarship Fund.

“It’s important to pay back,” Skip says of his philanthropy. “Students today face a different set of challenges than when I was there. My parents had to scrimp and save to send me to New Hampton, and I benefited from that. I’d like to give students, especially challenged students, the same opportunity I had. Helping students is what New Hampton School does so well.”

THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME

Sometimes, you just know when a decision is the right one. That’s how Bill and Sally Van Ingen felt when they and their son, Will, visited New Hampton School during their search for a prep school. They had recently moved from California to a small town in western Pennsylvania and, armed with a list of schools recommended by an educational consultant, started visiting schools throughout the northeast. One of them was Bill’s alma mater, St. Paul’s School in Concord, NH, which their daughter, Avery, attended and loved. But as every parent knows, what works for one child doesn’t always work for another. The search continued — until they visited New Hampton School.

“Right away, we knew this place was unique,” Bill says. “It started with meeting with Head of School Joe Williams. None of the heads at any of the other schools we visited took the time to meet with prospective students and their parents.” Sally adds that everyone they met — staff, students, and teachers — was friendly, approachable, and helpful. “And you could tell it was genuine,” she says.

The person whose first impressions mattered most was, of course, Will. Like a lot of kids at that age, Will was searching for a place that felt right, a school where he’d be accepted for who he was. After the campus tour and a meeting with Director of Enrollment Management Mr. McCulloch, it was clear that Will had made up his mind.

“We could tell immediately, without even his even saying a word,” Sally says. “He’d found a place where he felt he could be himself. It was definitely the right place at the right time for him.”

Will spent four years at NHS, participating in a wide variety of sports and other co-curricular activities while meeting the tough academic challenges his teachers had set for him. He is currently attending the University of Denver in a program and environment that Bill says is very similar to NHS, with strong academics and the opportunity to satisfy Will’s love of the outdoors. “He also has a cohort of friends from NHS that he keeps in touch with,” Bill says. “Thanks to the connections they developed through their experiences at NHS, they’re friends for life.”

Sally and Bill also keep up their own connection with the school. Bill currently serves on the Board of Trustees, and he and Sally have established an endowment that helps students fully participate in all aspects of life at NHS. “We wanted to make it possible for kids to participate in activities — such as Project Week — that they may not otherwise have been able to afford,” Bill says. “It’s all about giving back. We feel so fortunate that our son had the opportunity to attend this outstanding school and benefit from all that it offers, and we want to help others have those same opportunities.”

“New Hampton School is a hidden gem,” Sally adds. “The place and people are so sincere, authentic, and accepting. It’s the best return on investment a parent could hope for.”

KEEPING NHS CYBER-SAFE

When the youngest of Veronica Kent’s three children scored unusually high on the Massachusetts Comprehensive System (MCAS) test in elementary school, Veronica knew that her daughter, Nora, had a great academic future. When it came time to decide on a secondary school, Veronica encouraged her daughter to apply far and wide. She was accepted by a lot of excellent schools, and Nora visited several of them, but something wasn’t clicking for her.

That changed when Will McCulloch, NHS Director of Enrollment Management, visited Nora’s middle school. Intrigued by the presentation, Nora later visited the campus with several other potential enrollees.

“That did it,” Veronica says. “She fell in love with the place. Her heart was set on New Hampton, so I agreed — sight unseen. I had never been to the campus.”

Veronica reports that Nora thrived at her school of choice, both academically and with the many social and extra-curricular opportunities. With the encouragement of her statistics teacher, Andrew Gale, Nora worked as a statistician for the basketball team and also developed an interest in creating video

clips of the players that could be used to send to college scouts. She became so proficient in shooting, editing, and producing that soon after matriculating at the University of Miami,  she became the videographer for the University’s basketball team.

Veronica herself soon became very involved with New Hampton School, serving on the Board of Trustees and eventually establishing The Kent Family Fund, which focuses on investing in IT infrastructure and education. Why IT? As the CEO of a global company — Alletess Medical Laboratory, a leader in allergy and immunology testing — she knows the importance of cyber security.

“I became aware of some opportunities to enhance the school’s technology platform and security, and I wanted to help,” she says. “Given the security threats that increase every day, all organizations need to stay vigilant.”

Technology isn’t the only reason behind the Kent Family’s ongoing generosity.

“I am so proud of the kind, confident, and accomplished young woman Nora has become and I think New Hampton School has a lot to do with that,” Veronica says. “I think a big part of what makes New Hampton so great for students is that most of the faculty lives on campus. The kids really get to know the teachers and their families — even their dogs. It was such a great environment for Nora and I want to help support that kind of opportunity and experience for others.”

Fiscal Responsibility, Family Ties

If you talk to Kathleen Howe and Joe Ardagna about New Hampton School, don’t expect to hear a lot of financial lingo and see a bunch of pie charts — unless you ask for that. Instead, what’s likely to come across is their confidence in the School’s future, their commitment to its continued financial stability and growth, and their deep sense of pride and gratitude for what New Hampton School has meant to their respective families. But let’s start with the finances.

“From my perspective as a Board member, the School’s finances are in excellent hands under Kathleen’s leadership,” says Joe. “We have a great endowment that, thanks in no small part to (fellow board member and Institutional Resource Chair) Steve Delaney ‘65, continues to grow and help keep the School’s grounds and buildings in good shape. And I’m pleased to be working with Kathleen to uphold the  commitment to grow while remaining fiscally responsible.”

Kathleen echoes Joe’s comments about both the endowment and Steve Delaney, while also crediting retired CFO Jill Duncan P’04, ’06. “It was a privilege to learn from both Steve and Jill,” she says. “Thanks to them, we have in place the financial structures and policies that have helped our endowment grow in a fiscally responsible way.”

One of the policies Kathleen cites as an example is a five percent cap on endowment spending, based on the average balance of the previous sixteen quarters. “The state of New Hampshire allows spending up to seven percent, but we never exceed five,” Kathleen says. “This helps us support tuition and overall operational expenses while continuing to grow the endowment. We also work closely with the advisors at John W. Bristol, an investment management firm, to keep us on that trajectory.”

Beyond the bottom line, both Kathleen and Joe have deep ties to the School. Joe is a 1980 NHS graduate who went on to build a highly successful restaurant business in Atlanta. His son, Steven, followed in his hockey-playing father’s footsteps and graduated from NHS in 2020. “It was a fantastic experience for me, and I was glad to see that the same DNA the School has was there for Steven, too. The people here are great. Students benefit from the small classroom size, and they form lifelong friendships.”

lot has changed over the years, but at its core, NHS provides students the opportunity to explore, to learn and bounce back from failure, and to develop the critical thinking skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. It’s a very nurturing environment.”

New Hampton is a family affair for Kathleen, too. Two of her three children graduated from NHS: Connor ’15 and Mason ’19. “I’ve always been interested in and dedicated to independent education, and that’s exactly what New Hampton is,” she says. “A lot has changed over the years, but at its core, NHS provides students the opportunity to explore, to learn and bounce back from failure, and to develop the critical thinking skills that will help them for the rest of their lives. It’s a very nurturing environment. As Joe said, it’s in the DNA here.”

OUR GIVING SOCIETIES

A CELEBRATION OF GENEROSITY

To prepare lifelong learners who will serve as active global citizens, it truly takes a village. It requires an extraordinary group of teachers, coaches, and staff. And, very importantly, it calls for a faithful community of loyal alumni, families, and friends, without whose support a life-changing New Hampton School education would not be possible.

To celebrate you, our generous donors, and to recognize your impact on our school community, we have Giving Societies. We need gifts at every level, as it is the collective sum that supports New Hampton School. We want to celebrate you, as you continue to support New Hampton School each year.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021–2022 15

Lending Her Voice

As a student at Beacon Academy, the Bostonbased, fourteen-month private school that prepares highly motivated inner city kids for high school, college, and careers, Briana Cardwell visited lots of different prep schools in several different states.

“I saw so many excellent, beautiful schools that anyone would be lucky to attend,” she recalls. “But when I toured New Hampton, I just sensed that this was the place for me. Even though I didn’t look like most of the other students and grew up in probably very different circumstances, everyone made me feel welcome and comfortable — not just during the tour, but during my entire time at New Hampton.”

Briana made the most of that time. She excelled academically, played sports, and immersed herself in student life and causes. One of her proudest achievements, she says, was starting a student-led diversity group.

“I’ve always been committed to the cause of greater diversity and inclusion,” she says. “And I’m proud that New Hampton is, too.”

Briana carried this commitment with her to Bowdoin College and then on to Boston University Law School. She worked for several years as an immigration lawyer before joining

a small private law firm in Southborough, Massachusetts. She credits a large part of her success so far to her years at New Hampton.

“The opportunities I had to experiment and grow were just great,” she says. “I loved all the teachers I had — well,  maybe there was one I didn’t love then, but I love her now,” she says with a laugh. “The faculty and administration were just great. I keep in touch with many of them. I feel like I never really left New Hampton.”

In a way, she hasn’t. Briana has always been an active alumna and is a recent recipient of the Young Alumni Leadership Award. She is also the youngest person to ever be named to the Board of Trustees, on which she serves today.

“I see my role on the Board as a voice for student concerns,” Briana says. “I think my age helps with that because as issues come up — as they always do — students might feel a little more comfortable talking with someone closer to their age. I want to be a voice for different perspectives and help deepen the kind of safe and accepting atmosphere I experienced when I was a student here.”

Honoring a Legend

Mark Tilton was a transformative coach, teacher, and mentor for generations of New Hampton School students. His legacy not only includes outstanding coaching on the basketball courts for men and women and on the football field, but also in the classroom and as an official and unofficial advisor to countless New Hampton School students. Head of School Joe Williams recently announced our intent to name our basketball court, “Mark Tilton Court,” in honor of Mark’s years of contribution, service, and dedication to New Hampton School. We are seeking support from all who loved Mark to resurface the court in his honor, and as a reflection of our appreciation and admiration for how he touched our community.

Mark Tilton was a legendary basketball coach, teacher, mentor, and friend. Mark’s impact on the community continues to be felt by so many of us. Having his name on the court will always remind us of what he meant to so many people.”

ANNUAL REPORT 2021–2022 25

From Sports to Sports Medicine

Many if not most students at NHS come from towns and cities much larger than New Hampton, New Hampshire. It may take some time to adjust to the quiet and relative geographic isolation of the School. So you would think that someone who grew up in nearby Gilford (population 7,700) would feel right at home, right away. But that wasn’t quite the case for Patrick Saunders. He needed to make a different kind of adjustment.

“Here I was, a small-town boy and suddenly I was in School with kids from big cities and different countries and cultures. It took some getting used to.”

He also had to get used to the fact that, though a basketball standout in Gilford, he was now playing at a higher level of competition and with more experienced teammates.

“I was actually kind of intimidated,” he says. “Fortunately, I had great coaches and trainers every step of the way. They prepared not only for varsity level but also for college play.”

The coaches obviously did well, for Patrick went on to play basketball for four years at Princeton University. During his senior year at Princeton, Patrick decided against professional basketball in favor of medical school at the University of Vermont. Today, Patrick is in his fourth year of residency in Orthopedics at the University of Arizona, considering sports medicine as his specialty. “I can relate to all sorts of sports injuries,” he says, chuckling.

You don’t get to be a doctor, though, by playing basketball. Patrick says he was well prepared for college and medical school, thanks to his parents, who stressed the importance of education, and New Hampton School.

“Academically, New Hampton was challenging and really prepared me for Princeton. The teachers and the administration were just fantastic. They still are.”

Patrick points out that his life would undoubtedly be different today if it weren’t for the opportunity to attend NHS, made possible by a scholarship and financial aid.

“I wouldn’t have been able to have such an incredible experience like NHS without the financial help, and it changed the entire course of my life,” he says. “I would want the same opportunity for all. I think it also helps to increase and enhance the diversity of the population at NHS by including people who are from backgrounds such as mine, where wealth isn’t necessarily a part of their upbringing.”

1821 Society: Establish Your Legacy

The strength of the New Hampton School’s future endowment depends in large part upon the foresight and support of those alumni, parents, and friends who have chosen to include the school in their estate plans. The 1821 Society serves to acknowledge their confidence and vision.

Members of the New Hampton School community who have established bequests, life income gifts, and charitable trusts for the ultimate benefit of the school recognize the value of a New Hampton School education and their responsibility to help preserve the opportunity for future generations. New Hampton School is most appreciative of the generous commitment made to preserving the school’s future by the Society’s current members.

We encourage others to join those honored here who recognize the value of sharing their legacy. By indicating your intentions to remember New Hampton School in your estate plans, you earn membership in the 1821 Society.

If you have New Hampton School in your estate plans and have not notified the School or would like more information, please contact the Advancement Office alumni@newhampton.org or 603-677-3413.

ANNUAL REPORT 2021–2022 31

CLASS OF 1972

A GOLDEN GIFT

As part of their 50-year reunion and celebration last year, the Class of 1972 donated a gift to New Hampton School designed to maintain both the academic opportunities and physical integrity of NHS during the next 50 years — and beyond. The gift has two components. The first is an Endowment Fund, which celebrates the return to coeducation, in 1970 after the school became an all-boys college preparatory boarding school in 1926. (The first female boarding students graduated with the class in ’72). The endowment will provide scholarship assistance to incoming female students who exemplifies the values of New Hampton School. This endowment aligns with the objectives of the Bicentennial Campaign to

support the School’s people and programs by providing access for deserving students, professional development opportunities for faculty and staff, and programmatic support to ensure the most relevant academic offerings are available to students. The second component of the gift is the Class of 1972 Outdoor Meeting Space, a gorgeous new gathering space on Blueberry Hill, behind Lane Hall, that adds to the beauty and appeal of the New Hampton campus. Completed last spring, the meeting space features beautiful landscaping and outdoor seating and meeting areas. The view is inspiring; the gift, golden.

THE NEW HAMPTON SCHOOL BICENTENNIAL CAMPAIGN • THE LEGACY BEFORE US 32

Further Together

This summer, Head of School Joe Williams announced the public launch of the Further Together Bicentennial Campaign. This campaign provides vital support to the people, programs, and spaces of our community. To commemorate the generosity of the campaign’s supporters, plans are underway for the construction of a stunning, 230+ seat Bicentennial Amphitheater overlooking the beauty of the campus and celebrating all those who call Husky Nation home. As an outdoor venue for class meetings, premium seats to a concert or game, or an easy gathering spot with friends, this space represents the unity of New Hampton School and those who rallied to take it Further Together.

With a gift to the Further Together Bicentennial Campaign, your name will be etched on one of the interlocking bricks that help this lasting tribute take shape — an enduring record of your commitment and husky pride.
