New Heights partnered with Fogarty Finger to develop the story of the interiors, signage, and branding elements throughout their new space at the Bedford-Union Armory. The team set out to immerse themselves in the rich and vibrant historic neighborhood of Crown Heights and the surrounding area, sourcing local makers and artists to partner with and bring the space to life in a rich and unique way. Most importantly, the team wanted the space to honor the neighborhood, local community, and the historic architecture of the armory.

Efdot is a visual artist and community builder rooted in New York. Known for his iconic Blob character and abstract-meets-figurative style, Efdot’s work explores the contrast between playfulness and mischief. With specific input from the New Heights Community Committee, Efdot designed the feature mural in the new space that tells the story of New Heights’ history and journey to their new forever home in Crown Heights. Users are able to discover something new every time they walk through the Student Lounge.

Noble Signs is a Brooklyn-based design studio specializing in custom handmade signage and floor-to-ceiling brand and storefront design. Founded by David Barnett and Mac Pohanka in 2013 out of an appreciation for the vanishing classic signage of New York City, Noble represents a new approach to a traditional craft. Fusing art, contemporary design, and technology with time-honored techniques (including handpainting, gold leaf, and neon) Noble bridges the heritage of the art form with a thorough understanding of today’s realities. Having the goal of honoring the original craft of the signage found within the Bedford-Union Armory while also adding a young, fresh spin, Noble Signs was a perfect partner for the New Heights space.

Oxford Pennant is a manufacturer of wool felt pennants, flags, and banners based in Downtown Buffalo, New York. Oxford Pennant was founded in 2013 when two guys met on a business trip and bonded over the nostalgia and ingenuity of pennants. New Heights wanted to display the colleges that the Alumni of the program have gone on to attend in a unique way, inspiring current students and visitors of the space. Oxford Pennant made all 200+ pennants by hand, featuring each college as well as blank pennants for future students to be encouraged to add to the legacy. Brooklyn-based furniture fabricator, Armada, created the metal hoop structures for the pennants to be displayed. This pennant installation is to be an evolving piece of art in the student lounge, encouraging continued development of student-athletes.

Dek In my head, basketball is synonymous with warm weather and summer. Because as long as I can remember... I’d have a basketball in my hand, run out to the playground and make friends with people I didn’t know... that definitely gave me a sense of warmth, gave me a sense of community. I’d wake up in the morning, put on my shorts and sneakers, brush my teeth, run out to the court and see who was there. The mural to me really represents rise and shine, wake up, it’s time to play basketball.

Peach Tao For the classrooms, I wanted to make it light-hearted, colorful and joyful in a curvy and upward motion... cheerful vibes literally sprinting out of a pair of old basketball shoes. From there, kids are happily flying away in birds-of-paradise flowers - carried by music, which was played by some New York pigeons with a bit of a Caribbean flair. I hope it’ll make the classroom a bit more cozy and welcoming, so the idea of studying inside a room does not seem too banal or dry.
Worked with Project Backboard in 2020 as the featured artist for the basketball court mural in Fort Greene.

Stephanie Costello The artwork Stephanie has created for New Heights was conceived as an amalgam of basketball courts and an obstacle course, charted through an urban terrain. The abstract artwork reflects New Heights’ vision of “ascension” (ladders and arrows project the viewer’s gaze upward through the artwork) and the colors and rhythmic shapes and patterns reflect the dynamism of the game of basketball.
Mark’s current project is tattooing basketballs; these personal pieces of art commemorate people’s love for the game, their stories, and their accomplishments.

Mark Burger / Swissipino I believe in documenting and preserving a personal history, as well as keeping an eye on the world around us. Knowing the past is the only way we can create a better future. My art honors Everyman and legends, overlooked sidewalk flowers and fleeting moments of humanity in my home, New York City.
