The ongoing Elephant & Castle regeneration programme is one of the biggest and most ambitious ever undertaken in the capital. The project includes the creation of a pedestrianised town centre, market square, 5,000 new and replacement homes, up to 450,000 square feet of retail space, an integrated public transport hub and London’s largest new park for 70 years. As offices, shops, restaurants, cafes and bars move into the area it will become one of the city’s most thriving and sought-after urban quarters. The brand new Castle leisure centre is expected to open its doors in late summer 2015. This state-of-the-art facility will feature swimming pools, badminton courts, a fully equipped gym and indoor cycle studio. Also included are exercise class and dance studios, a café and a crèche to keep toddlers safe and happy whilst you work out or play. To significantly improve traffic flow and road safety for all users, the northern roundabout at Elephant & Castle is being changed to provide two-way traffic, dedicated cycle lanes and safer pedestrian crossings at surface level. Work on this part of the overall regeneration is expected to be completed by summer 2016. The eagerly anticipated first phase of the ‘Cycle Superhighway’ running from the Elephant to Holborn is scheduled to open in March 2016.
