Bentleys of Surrey

There’s been a butcher on this site in East Molesey since the late 1800s, but the latest incarnation has really put the shop on the map. Famed for its Southdown lamb, Packington free range pork and chickens, Cote de Boeuf, spare ribs in Mississippi BBQ sauce, Bentleys is a local landmark. The queue for turkeys at Christmas stretches out of the shop and into the street.

The Walled Garden

The Walled Garden is like a well-kept secret. Aside from the small car park off Thames Street, you might not know it’s there. But step through the gates and you’re in for a treat. Hampton Court offers two trains per hour and a 35 minute journey into Waterloo (via Wimbledon) during peak hours.

Character, quality and style – on solid architectural foundations The essential character of Lower Sunbury is rooted in the combination of close-built, historic houses from the Georgian period. This much-loved architectural style, with its classically proportioned windows, London stock brick, parapet detailing and slate roofs, reflects the prosperity of the town in the 18th Century, and which it still enjoys today. The design for Montford Place is closely based on these proportions and details, ensuring that the new houses and apartments blend seamlessly into the surrounding streets, avenues and squares. Reflecting the handsome dimensions of the rooms within, the classically proportioned Georgian sash windows feature traditional glazing bars, transoms and mullions.

It is vital to recreate the proportions of these windows accurately – the slightest deviation towards modern style completely spoils the effect. As befits a conservation area, the front elevations facing Thames Street and Green Street will have timber, mock sash windows. Elsewhere, new PVC Georgian sash windows are used because of their improved thermal performance. The use of white render and stucco on key features such as bay windows, porticos and door surrounds is a typical detail in this location, and the entrances to properties will conform to the classical proportions and detailing, with a combination of simple hoods and elegant porches.

The mix of roof designs, faithful to the period, will include double pitched behind parapet walls, low pitched with exaggerated overhangs and mansard, all covered with slate tiles. With traditional London stock brick on many of the elevations, the overall effect of Montford Place is one of classical, understated elegance – not a timid copy from a Georgian pattern book, but a considered, contemporary reflection of all that is best about this quintessentially British architectural style.
