PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Welcome to New Hope Christian College’s Fall issue of The Call. Since our last issue, much has happened, and we are excited to share what God is doing to develop the next generation of leaders. I have often said the problem with today’s church is not an absence of leaders but an overabundance of underdeveloped leaders. This reality continually motivates us to build a top-notch Biblical higher education institution that will prepare students to make a Kingdom impact in the ministry and marketplace.

While the pandemic permanently altered our lives, it is not without a silver lining. The past two years have compelled us to re-focus on mission-critical endeavors and identify mission-fit students. Although we had to adapt to the ever-changing post-pandemic world, our students and staff have risen to the challenge and put a lot of hard work and heart work into building a God-preferred new normal.

Amid uncertain circumstances, we sensed God leading us to plant New Hope West, our NHCC lab church. This miraculous God story continues to unfold with miracle after miracle of provision, restoration, and healing. God multiplied our original group of forty leaders to become a wonderful lab church family of over one thousand people who understand that one of our most significant mission fields is our next generation.

Thank you for your partnership in the Kingdom work God is doing here at NHCC. Your prayers, generosity, and investment are making an eternal difference, and we greatly appreciate you. I encourage you to continue to be a part of God’s NEW HOPE story as the best is yet to come!

THE LAB

THE LAB

On Sunday, April 4, 2021, a God-given dream of a lab church became a reality with the grand opening of New Hope West. Our students, who had spent the last year involved in every step of praying, planning, preparing, and planting a church from the ground up, witnessed people walk through the doors of New Hope West that Easter morning and encounter the love of Christ.

The dream of a lab church where students use the knowledge gained in the classroom in practical, hands-on ways alongside seasoned veterans and professionals continues to unfold and bear fruit. From the moment you drive onto campus, you will see students and community members serving alongside each other – in the parking ministry, hospitality, kids and youth ministry, tech and production, worship and creative arts, broadcast, and pastoral ministries. In each area, students are challenged to develop their gifts and discover new ones as they serve and grow each week. New Hope West is a safe environment where students are allowed to lead, try new things, make mistakes, debrief with mentors, and grow forward into all God has created them to be.

In addition to our internships and in-house serving opportunities, God has opened doors within our community to allow our students to train and work closely with many Artists in Residence. Kyle Anderson (professional audio engineer), Derrek Miyahara (professional photographer), Tim and Mardi Savage (professional filmmakers), and visiting professional artists such as Lionel Pasamonte (professional live broadcast video director) have been some of these mentors who have invested in our students. Through these relationships, students have had other opportunities to help produce projects on-location around Oregon as well as with local studios such as FPW Media. Production major, Kaitlyn Coumerilh, has been given an internship with FPW Media, where she will gain even more experience with marketplace production that she might not learn in the context of church ministry.

Through the lab church, students at NHCC will graduate with between 1,400 and 1,600 hours of practicum experience. Not only are our students growing and learning valuable lessons, but they are also able to be a light and blessing to our community as they bring their gifts, talents, and hearts to impact people for the Kingdom of God.

GRADUATIONS 2021-22

Over the last two years, we have seen much turmoil in society that has caused widespread anxiety, depression, and unrest. Yet, despite these challenges, New Hope Christian College has remained faithful to its calling to disciple emerging Christian leaders by equipping them to live exceptionally.

From 2021 to 2022, we had twenty-six undergraduate students finish the race, graduate, and move on to enhance the Kingdom of God in the ministry and marketplace. The students God has called to NHCC have risen to the challenge and persevered to the finish line. They have shown what it means to be consistent in an everchanging world and exemplified what it takes to live exceptionally. God has faithfully supported the students he has called to NHCC, and we have been blessed to partner with what God is doing in and through them—especially now.

Now is the time for emerging Christian leaders to face adversity, post-pandemic society, and unprecedented times and to go out into the world as ministers and ambassadors for Christ. It is now that emerging Christian leaders must rise to the challenge, accept the calling on their lives, and live exceptionally. The recent graduates of New Hope Christian College students are doing just that!

I learned how to work hard and the importance of preparation. I got to cut my teeth on practicing the art of leadership. It was a safe place to try things and make mistakes, which I believe is a very big part of life. My training here has also prepared me with job skills and has given me qualifying experiences.”

I am definitely different from the time that I arrived at NHCC. I have always followed and loved Jesus from the time I was young, but I didn’t really know or understood why. I now feel that I have the meat behind my faith and can stand confidently with Jesus as my Lord, and live a life that reflects that!”

One piece of advice that I would give to future prospective students is to follow the call with your whole heart! There are going to be many who doubt you and think that you’re crazy, but as long as you have Jesus on your side, everything will fall into place exactly how it’s meant to! Lean in to the call, invest in yourself, and walk out of here being the person God has created you to be!”

PROVEN THEOLOGICAL EDUCATION

Nearly fifty years ago, under the energetic leadership of Dr. Don Bryan, New Hope Christian College began pursuing accreditation with the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE, formerly Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges). The College was granted Applicant Status on April 9, 1974; Candidate Status on October 20, 1980; and Initial Accreditation on October 31, 1983. The pursuit to prove educational excellence carries on today.

Accreditation is a federally recognized oversight that ensures the quality of education and the integrity of the institution. Accreditation is a requirement for federal student aid, and more than 95% of New Hope Christian College students received some federal student aid last year

More importantly, however, accreditation with ABHE is a Spirit-empowered push to advance biblical education and Kingdom impact.

Every ten years, the College must apply for reaffirmation of that accreditation, and the College is currently in the midst of that extensive process. It begins with a season of self-examination of the College’s commitment to and execution of 141 essential elements of ABHE’s standards of accreditation. The process concludes with an on-site evaluation by a team of ABHE peer members in the spring of 2023.

EXCELLENCE

We believe that ABHE will commend the College for three key areas of development of its students: theology, ministry skill, and character. Our confidence in our theology department is based on how alumni routinely express their appreciation for the theology instructors at New Hope. A recent graduate expressed, “The theology professors were knowledgeable and did an excellent job of teaching in an engaging way. These classes are the core reason I went to New Hope, and I think they were taught with the highest degree of excellence.” When students combine that theological development with the practical ministry skills formed through hands-on involvement in the on-campus lab church, New Hope West, effective Christian leaders emerge.

The foundational component of their development, however, is character, which grows in community through corporate and private devotions, weekly chapel services, and small group gatherings. These life-on-life experiences create a familial atmosphere that promotes spiritual health that ABHE is sure to recognize.

New Hope Christian College, under the leadership of Dr. Wayne Cordeiro, is embracing the chance to prove its educational excellence and continue the legacy of past presidents like Dr. Don Bryan.

RETRACING THE HISTORY OF OUR ENDOWMENTS

You plant your future.

Leaving it to chance will only produce weeds. However, you won’t always understand it in advance; life will only be understood in reverse, so you must live it forward. Therefore, we are grateful for the many who have invested in the future of our young leaders through scholarships, gifts, and endowments. Your investments continue to live through our graduates, ministers, missionaries, and those who serve Christ in the marketplace!

Over the past 15 years, changes took place, and my goal was to redeem our scholarships and endowments and simplify how they were accounted for and distributed. It would be a decade-long journey, but as we look backward, it was worth all the effort and investments.

A BRIEF HISTORY

During the Rexius Event Center construction and some other needed repairs, the board at that time voted to borrow funds from the Endowments and Scholarship funds ($1.2M) to complete the building. They intended to replenish it along with interest. However, the recession of 2008-2009 was in full swing, and repayment had to be delayed.

In 2010, the board made plans to close the college and sell its assets. However, New Hope International made a significant faith investment of 3.7 million to refurbish the sagging finances, repair its buildings and recruit new students. In honor of the generosity and investment that gave our college a second breath, Eugene Bible College was renamed New Hope Christian College. This new name would also give the college a global reach, including students from the mission fields.

Looking back from 2010, as part of its 10-year plan, New Hope Christian College (formerly Eugene Bible College) began repaying the loan at $52,000 per year. Even though there were no funds in the scholarship and endowment accounts, to honor those who had formerly given money for scholarships, we began giving grants in their names using funds from undesignated giving. NHCC invested above and beyond what was required in order to plant our future

The following amounts of distributed scholarships from the past few years is as follows:

MAKING THE ENDOWMENTS WHOLE

In 2018, we requested the services of Dr. Erika Funk, who formerly served with the University of Oregon Foundation, which manages its endowment fund. Her services were highly regarded, and she worked for over a year to reconcile the accounts and acted as an internal auditor under the purview of the Attorney General’s office. She was to classify which funds were “scholarships” (funds that were to be given in their totality) and which funds were “endowments” (larger amounts designated with donor instructions and only the interest disbursed).

Several years ago, NHCC sold some unused property and allocated the funds to make our endowments whole. This large amount made a massive stride toward redeeming our endowments. There were accounts, mostly made up of smaller scholarships, that have all been fully honored. (See list)

CURRENT STATUS

Presently, the endowments and scholarships have been made whole and duly honored and distributed, even during the time of depletion. The endowments are in conservative investments gaining interest. The good news is that the college is now in strong financial standing and has scored the highest financial integrity score with our accrediting association ABHE (Association of Biblical Higher Education) for the past two years. We continue to raise funds, and through the generosity of individuals, New Hope West, and other partner churches, our annual scholarships exceed $250,000. (One partner church in California invested $250,000 this year in our students!)

CONCLUSION

I am honored to announce that the endowments are currently made whole and scholarships have continued each year to assist our students who are following the call! Thank you to our staff and leaders for their tireless efforts over these past ten years!

FOLLOWING THE CALL INTO THE SUMMER

NHW’s Summer intern program champions the next generation and captures the heart of the mission to prepare the best servanthearted leaders who will take the Gospel to the World. Students awarded an intern position receive room and board, two classes toward their academic program, and a monthly stipend to support their participation. The program provides a thirtyhour work week, giving students daily learning opportunities with mentors and time to develop experience in their areas of specialized ministry.

Keeping with the NHCC mission and purpose, the internship program models itself around three core areas: spiritual life, academic life, and work ethic. Students attend morning devotions twice a week, as well as the School of Church Leadership (SCL) Bible study taught by Pastor Wayne Cordeiro. A weekly Team Building class led by Pastor Aaron Cordeiro connects academics with daily practicum ministry instruction. Group workouts and additional responsibilities to assist with the upkeep of the college round out weekly hours and emphasize the importance of honoring God with a strong work ethic.

A highlight of the summer internship was the planning, development, and participating in two camps that served 121 middle school and high school students. Interns served, practiced their leadership skills, and witnessed the faithfulness of God as many students received Christ and re-dedicated their lives to Jesus. In addition, through thoughtful post-camp debrief, God was clearly working to highlight and confirm our interns’ call to ministry.

Thanks to the generosity and investment of many, NHCC is able to provide a training ground for emerging leaders to grow and develop in both integrity of heart and skillfulness of hands.

In today’s fast-paced world, it can be challenging to keep up with the ever-changing streams of content that people consume. That’s why we ensure that industry-standard tech and production skills are at the forefront of our curriculum. This summer, we were excited to offer a team of our college students and high school interns the opportunity to travel to the Redwoods to take part in shooting four video messages with Pastor Wayne Cordeiro. Alongside seasoned production mentors Tim and Mardi Savage, students had the opportunity to put their skills to use in real-world ministry work using state-of-the-art video equipment, including our RED 8k digital cinema camera. We are committed to ensuring our students have opportunities to work alongside industry professionals to train and prepare them for the ever-evolving demands of the ministry and the marketplace.

INVESTING IN TOMORROW’S LEADERS

High School Internship

NHCC’s core purpose is developing emerging leaders, and that doesn’t just begin at the college level; the mission is just as urgent with our high schoolers. Through many serving opportunities in our lab church, New Hope West, teenagers are involved and mentored in every area of ministry. This year, 19 high schoolers were invited to our second annual NHCC High School Internship, where they spent a week on campus experiencing the life of an NHCC student: spiritually, relationally, and in practical learning. From devotions with Pastor Wayne at 7 am on Wednesday through services on Sunday, they spent the week learning the tools and the heart behind ministry in a number of different concentrations.

One of the internship’s highlights was the opportunity to apply their learning in two Island Style Celebration outreach concerts on Saturday afternoon. Alongside our NHCC students and seasoned mentors, the interns were involved in every aspect of these live concerts, from working on tech and production to running communication, sound, video, and lighting. As a result, each student grew in their ministry leadership by practicing skills in a real-world environment. Investments like this into our next generation are investments into the future of the Church, and developing future leaders is what NHCC is all about.

OUTREACH TEAMS

Our newly formed deputation teams at NHCC are committed to partnering with churches and organizations to share the gospel in Lane County and beyond. Our Creative Arts department has put together teams from our student body to support these outreach efforts, which has given us the ability to serve, provide a worship team, or even guest speakers upon request.

This Summer, we visited Waypoint, Desert Song, and New Life churches in Oregon. One of the highlights has been new relationships built with our brothers and sisters in Christ around the Pacific Northwest. We hope to serve and strengthen these relationships as we continue to - Do Church as a Team!

JUMP START

Starting college can be a challenging new season for young adults. At NHCC, our Jump Start program was created to support students transitioning from home to college life. Incoming Freshmen with leadership potential are granted a scholarship and invited to move into their dorm rooms one week before school starts to spend extra time in community amongst their new peers and upperclassmen.

Leaders encourage and support these students in their transition to NHCC by modeling healthy relationships, offering wisdom from their own experiences, and helping new students process the excitement of walking into the call God has placed on them in this new season.
