MR. JONES: Designated hitter Mike Jones has launched a two-run home run each of the past two nights. Last season with the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Jones homered just five times in 97 contests.
tures five players who hail from the Garden State: Dan Betteridge (Turnersville), Mike DeJesus (Manalapan), Steve Fox (Washington Twp.), Bobby Gagg (Hamburg), and Isaac Pavlik (Rutherford).
JACKAL BITES: Through two games, New Jersey starting pitchers have compiled a pair of quality starts after the team collected just 30 in 92 games in 2010... The Jackals have committed six errors during their first two games of the season... New Jersey batters have drawn just one walk through the season’s first two games.
SWITCHING LOCKERS: Angel Flores, who served as New Jersey’s primary catcher during the second half of last season and was in spring training with the Jackals as a catcher in 2011, has accepted a coaching position with New Jersey. The 24-year-old, who hit .248 in 34 games with the Jackals in 2010, played six years and reached as high as Triple-A with the Tigers’ organization.
OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year.
LOADED WITH LEFTIES: With five left-handed hitters and three switch hitters on his roster, Jackals’ skipper Joe Calfapietra has the potential to roll out a lineup consisting of eight players who bat from the left side of the plate.
BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization.

Pittsfield also handed the Jackals their worst loss of the season, 17-4, on July 4 at Wahconah Park. A bright spot for the Jackals was Mike DeJesus, who batted .333 in 16 games against Pittsfield. UPCOMING MILESTONES: Leonard Davis’ next home run will be the 100th of his career... Manager Joe Calfapietra is 13 wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey... NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JONES HOMERS AGAIN, BUT JACKALS FALL TO PITTSFIELD May 27 Recap
Pittsfield, Mass. – Mike Jones launched his second home run in as many games to begin the season, but the New Jersey Jackals committed four errors as they fell to the Pittsfield Colonials, 5-2, on Friday night at Wahconah Park. For the second straight night, the Colonials opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first inning when second baseman Danny Bomback reached on an error by Jackals’ shortstop Mike DeJesus and scored on a hard-hit single off the left field wall by right fielder Angel Molina. The Jackals took the lead in the top of the fourth inning when right fielder Myron Leslie led off with a single and Jones ripped a two-run home run off a gazebo beyond the right field wall, but New Jersey would collect just three more hits from that point on. Pittsfield re-gained a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run home run by third baseman Johnny Welch. In the seventh, the Colonials used a trio of stolen bases and a throwing error by catcher Chris Anderson to tack on two insurance runs. New Jersey starter James Leverton, who pitched exclusively as a reliever in the Chicago Cubs’ organization last season, allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits over six innings with two walks and two strikeouts in his first start since 2009. Leverton (0-1) took the loss while Pittsfield starter Dave Qualben (1-0) earned the win after surrendering two runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. Offensively for New Jersey, Jones, Leslie, and third baseman Nick Giarraputo each collected two hits. Left fielder Billy Mottram paced the Colonials’ offense, going 3-for-4 with three singles. The Jackals and Colonials conclude their season-opening three-game series on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Wahconah Park when New Jersey sends right-hander Chris Vasami to the mound against Pittsfield righty Miguel Flores. Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com. Jackal Bites: Colonials manager Jamie Keefe was ejected in the bottom of the first inning… Prior to his sixth-inning homer, Pittsfield’s Johnny Welch was 0-for-6 with five strikeouts on the season… New Jersey’s Mike Jones, who hit his second home run of the season on Friday night, hit just five in 97 games with the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans in 2010.
