UPCOMING MILESTONES: Isaac Pavlik (643.2) is 1.1 innings shy of tying the Can-Am League record for career innings (645, held by former Jackal John Kelly)... Leonard Davis’ next home run will be the 100th of his career... Manager Joe Calfapietra is 13 wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey. A RIVALRY BEGINS: In the first-ever regular-season meeting between the two teams, the Jackals fell to the Bears, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark. Jackals’ catcher Myron Leslie doubled, homered, and scored a pair of runs, but Bears’ starter Eric Eden allowed just one earned run in 6 2/3 innings to earn the win. JACKAL BITES: The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in three of their first four contests... The Jackals’ bullpen turned in three shutout innings on Sunday at Newark after being tagged for eight earned runs over eight innings during the first three games of the season... Chris White’s bunt single in the fifth inning on Sunday at Newark snapped an 0-for-15 streak by New Jersey leadoff batters to begin the season... Jackals’ leadoff hitters are now 1-for-17 this season... Jackals third baseman Nick Giarraputo celebrated his 23rd birthday on Sunday with a 1-for-4 performance at Newark. THE BEAR FACTS: The Bears, who are managed by former major leaguer Tim Raines, are led by catcher Billy Alvino who is batting .533 (8-15) through the first four games. Outfielder Tim Raines Jr. has also been hot with two home runs, six RBI and five runs scored. As a team the Bears are batting .308 as they average seven runs a game. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) all-time on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. MR. JONES: Designated hitter Mike Jones launched a two-run home run in each of the first two games of the season at Pittsfield. Last season with the Advanced-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Jones homered just five times in 97 contests. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse
last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which is the same ownership group that owns the Jackals. FAMILIAR FACES: Seven players from the Jackals 2010 team are on the 2011 opening day roster, including pitchers Isaac Pavlik, A.J. Wideman, Mike Pontius, and Chris Vasami, and infielders Argenis Reyes, Dan Betteridge, and Mike DeJesus.
JACKALS vs. BEARS 2011.................................................................. 0-1 The Jackals and Bears will be meeting for the first time this season. With their ballparks separated by just nine miles, the Jackals played their inaugural season in 1998 and the Bears followed in 1999. The Bears played in the Atlantic League from their inception through 2010.

NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS DROP FIRST-EVER REGULAR SEASON MEETING AT NEWARK May 29 Recap
Newark, N.J. – Myron Leslie doubled, homered, and scored a pair of runs, but the New Jersey Jackals fell to the Newark Bears, 4-3, in the first-ever regular season meeting between the two Garden State rivals on Sunday afternoon at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. In his Newark Bears debut, Hillsborough native Eric Eden allowed just two runs (one earned) over 6 2/3 innings to pick up the win. Jackals’ starter A.J. Wideman surrendered four runs on eight hits over five innings and took the loss. Newark right fielder Danny Santiesteban, who last year with the Worcester Tornadoes hit seven of his 14 home runs against the Jackals, finished the contest 3-for-3 with a double. Santiesteban opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI single, the Bears third single of the frame, to plate center fielder Tim Raines Jr. with the game’s first run. In the top of the fourth inning, the Jackals scored a pair of runs to take their first lead of the day. New Jersey tied the game at one on back-to-back doubles by left fielder Leonard Davis and Leslie to begin the inning. Later in the frame, Leslie scored on a throwing error by Bears’ third baseman Todd Gossage to give the Jackals a 2-1 advantage. However, Newark evened the score at two in the bottom of the fourth when Santiestaban doubled and scored on an RBI single by shortstop Jeff Toth. The Bears plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of designated hitter Kyle LaMotta and a Wideman wild pitch to make the score 4-2. The Jackals pulled within one on Leslie’s first home run of the season in the top of the eighth and then moved the potential tying run into scoring position when right fielder Jeremy Slayden doubled off the wall in right with two outs in the ninth, but Newark reliever Mikey Mehlich escaped the jam to secure the victory for the Bears and notch his first save of the season. In the loss, a trio of Jackals’ relievers turned in three scoreless frames. Phil Bartleski hurled a perfect sixth inning, Jared Locke turned in 1 1/3 scoreless frames, and Steve Fox retired both batters he faced after entering with two on and one out in the bottom of the eighth. Offensively for New Jersey, Slayden finished 2-for-3 while left fielder Leonard Davis doubled and scored a run. Jackal Bites: Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium and Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals’ home venue, are separated by just nine miles… Prior to the contest, New Jersey relievers had allowed eight runs in eight innings this season… Centerfielder Chris White’s fifth-inning bunt single snapped an 0-for-15 streak by New Jersey leadoff hitters to begin the season… Second baseman Argenis Reyes was pinch hit for by Dan Betteridge in the third inning after Reyes was spiked in the shin attempting to turn a double play in the second inning.
