TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP Ryan Lobban (0-1, 8.10 ERA) FOR SUSSEX: RHP Daniel Berlind (0-0, 4.50 ERA) Last night’s 6-0 loss at home against Pittsfield snapped the Jackals four-game winning streak. Tonight, New Jersey sends southpaw Ryan Lobban to the mound for his third start of the season against Sussex righty Daniel Berlind. Lobban and Berlind locked horns on May 30 with the Skyhawks coming away victorious, 5-4. Lobban struggled in his previous start last Friday vs Brockton, allowing six runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings. In Berlind’s last start on Friday at Worcester, the righty surrendered six runs (two earned) on six hits in two innings in a 12-8 Sussex loss. The Skyhawks took three of four from New Jersey in the season-opening series on Memorial Day weekend, but the Jackals lead the all-time series 28-22. The teams will meet 24 times in 2010.
Ryan Lobban
CUTTING IT CLOSE
New Jersey’s seven wins have come by a total of 10 runs. The Jackals have suffered three one-run defeats and been involved in seven one-run games. Closer Romas Hicks has saved six of the Jackals seven victories.
PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE
New Jersey batters drew 12 walks in Wednesday afternoon’s 8-7, 10-inning win over Pittsfield. The Jackals drew six walks on Friday night in a 6-0 loss, raising their league-leading total to 69. Third baseman Abraham Nunez, a 12-year major league veteran, has drawn a league-high 16 walks. Second baseman Argenis Reyes, who spent parts of each of the past two seasons with the New York Mets. walked four times in six plate appearances on Wednesday. Shortstop Mike DeJesus has walked 10 times in 14 games and ranks fourth in the circuit. Sussex pitchers walkex 16 batters in the May 22 exhibition game against New Jersey.
REAL BITS OF JACKAL
The Jackals have won back-to-back series after taking three of four from Brockton last weekend and two of three from Pittsfield most recently... New Jersey went 5-2 on its first homestand of the season... Jordan Newton, who scored the game-winning run in the 10th inning on Wednesday afternoon after lacing a pinchhit double, went 8-for-16 and drove in seven of the Jackals’ 20 runs in their four-game set against Brockton... Since New Jersey placed Quentin Davis on the disabled list on June 1 with a strained oblique, Kevin Clark has hit leadoff in each of the past nine games. Clark’s eight steals rank second in the league (Sussex OF Kraig Binick has 10 thefts).Clark was the only Jackal to record multiple hits in Thursday night’s 6-0 loss vs Pittsfield, raising his average to .478 (11-for-23) against the Colonials in six contests this season... Mike DeJesus went 2-for-19 in his first five games this season, but he is 9-for-28 (.321) since (nine games)... Abraham Nunez was 2-for-18 entering the last Pittsfield series on May 31. He is 11-for-29 (.379) since (10 games). His seven steals rank third in the league... Righty Shawn Riggans is batting .480 (12-for-25) against right-handed pitchers, but is just 1-for16 (.062) vs lefties... New Jersey catchers have allowed seven passed balls in 14 games this season, but they’ve also thrown out 33% of attempted base stealers (9-of-27)... Over the first 14 games of the 2010 season, four New Jersey players have missed a total of 29 games on the disabled list. That doesn’t include Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES THURSDAY, JUNE 10 - PITTSFIELD 6, NEW JERSEY 0
Miguel Flores tossed 8 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Pittsfield Colonials to a 6-0 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium. Flores (1-1), a 22-year-old right-hander, threw 143 pitches and struck out a career-high eight batters while scattering seven singles en route to his first win of the season. He walked six batters and departed with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, but former Jackal Giuseppe Granitto retired left fielder Kevin Clark to end the threat. Flores went 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in five starts against the Jackals in 2009. The Jackals left the bases loaded in the second, eighth and ninth innings while stranding 10 runners on base in the contest. The loss ends New Jersey’s four-game winning streak while the Colonials snap a five-game skid while salvaging the finale of the three-game series. The Jackals finish their first homestand of the season 5-2 after going 2-5 on their season-opening road trip. The Colonials plated the game’s first two runs on a two-out single by first baseman Wellinson Baez in the second inning and a bases-loaded groundout off the bat of right fielder Angel Molina with two outs in the third. In the fourth, Pittsfield catcher Zane Chavez doubled home Baez and shortstop Matt Nandin laid down a successful two-out suicide squeeze to extend the Colonials’ lead to 4-0. Pittsfield tacked on a run in the fifth on a fielders’ choice before capping the scoring in the top of the ninth on an Edmondson RBI single. New Jersey starter Nick Asselin (1-2) turned in seven innings, but took the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked a pair of batters and did not record a strikeout. Rookie right-hander Jairo Mendez, a Montclair State University alum, allowed one run over the final two innings in his professional debut. For the Jackals, Clark continued his hot hitting against Pittsfield with a 2-for-4 night at the plate. He is now 11-for-23 in six games against the Colonials this season.
RIGGED UP
On Monday, May 31, the Can-Am League announced that New Jersey Jackals designated hitter Shawn Riggans was named the league’s Player of the Week following the opening weekend of the 2010 season. In four games on the road against the Sussex Skyhawks, Riggans went 8-for-15 at the plate with two doubles, two home runs, and a league-high seven RBIs. His .533 batting average also tops the Can-Am League. After going 0-for-4 in Friday night’s season-opener, the Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native collected eight hits in his next 11 at-bats. He launched a three-run home run in the first inning of Saturday’s contest at Skylands Park before connecting on a leadoff homer in the fifth inning on Sunday.
LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVED
This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.
NEW JERSEY, VIA TORONTO
Three Jackals players have found their way to New Jersey via the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Outfielder Jacob Butler and pitchers Edward Rodriguez and A.J. Wideman have all spent time with the Blue Jays. Former New Jersey hurlers Ted Serro and Seth Overbey also came out of the Toronto pipeline.
MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR
Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVE
The Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.
ALUMNI UPDATE
Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.
2009: A RETROSPECTIVE
Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.
FIVE-STAR QUALITY
In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY JUNE 11 1927 - During the ninth inning, the Philadelphia Athletics field a team of seven future Hall of Famers. The outfield consists of Ty Cobb in right, Al Simmons in center, and Zack Wheat in left. Jimmie Foxx is at first base, Eddie Collins is at second, and Lefty Grove pitches in relief. Cy Perkins started as catcher, but when Mickey Cochrane pinch-hit for him, seven Cooperstownbound players were in the lineup. 1990 - Ageless Nolan Ryan pitches his unprecedented sixth career no-hitter, striking out 14 batters in a 5-0 win over the A’s. He is the first to pitch a no-hitter for three different teams, and the first to throw a no-hitter in three different decades. 1997 - Kevin Brown pitches the first no-hitter of the season and the second no-hitter in Marlins history in a 9-0 win over the Giants in San Francisco. Brown has a perfect game going until he hits pinch-hitter Marvin Benard with a 1-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth inning. Benard is the only Giants player to reach base. San Francisco starter William Van Landingham also had a nohitter for six innings before Charles Johnson’s home run in the seventh breaks up the bid and triggers a Florida offensive explosion.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA

JOE CALFAPIETRA
CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME
MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON
MANAGERIAL CAREER
The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
