TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: LHP A.J. Wideman (2-1, 2.70 ERA - 4th start) FOR SUSSEX: RHP Jusef Frias (1-0, 6.19 ERA - 4th start) A 2009 Can-Am League All-Star, Wideman turned in his best start of the season on Tuesday vs Pittsfield when he surrendered one run on eight hits in six innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Frias, a 24-year-old from the Dominican Republic, is in his sixth season. In 2009 with the Worcester Tornadoes, Frias was second in the Can-Am league with 50 walks in but his 4.60 ERA was a career-low and his 13 starts tied a career-high. Frias received a no-decision on 5/28/10 vs New Jersey after allowing eight runs on 10 hits with five walks and four strikeouts in four innings in a 10-9 Jackals win. Against New Jersey in 2009, the former Mets farmhand went 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA with 22 hits in 25 innings, 20 walks, and 20 strikeouts. The Jackals hit .256 against Frias in 2009.

A.J. Wideman

CUTTING IT CLOSE

New Jersey’s eight wins have come by a total of 11 runs. The Jackals have five one-run victories but have suffered four one-run defeats (nine one-run games total). Closer Romas Hicks has saved seven of the Jackals eight victories.

THE BUTLER DID IT

In seven games since returning to the Jackals lineup on Saturday, June 5, outfielder Jacob Butler is 9-for-28 (.321) with six of his nine hits going for extra bases (three doubles and three home runs). He’s driven in 10 runs, including five of New Jersey’s seven in the first two games against Sussex this weekend. On Friday, his two-out, solo homer in the eighth was the game’s only run. Butler ripped a grand slam in the third inning on Saturday to give the Jackals a 4-1 lead in an eventual 7-6 loss.

REAL BITS OF JACKAL

After splitting the first two games of the series vs Sussex, a win on Sunday would net the Jackals their third straight series victory... The Skyhawks took three of four from New Jersey in the season-opening series on Memorial Day weekend, but the Jackals lead the all-time series 29-23... The teams will meet 24 times in 2010... The Jackals lead the Can-Am League with 31 stolen bases... Third baseman Abraham Nunez leads the league with 17 walks and ranks third with eight thefts. Nunez failed to draw a walk on Saturday for the first time sine June 2. He had walked at least once in each of New Jersey’s past nine games…Manager Joe Calfapietra shuffled New Jersey’s lineup on Saturday as second baseman Argenis Reyes was bumped from second to seventh in the order, marking the first time he hadn’t hit second this season. Reyes went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice bunt and has just one hit in his last 20 at-bats… Since New Jersey placed Quentin Davis on the disabled list on June 1 with a strained oblique, Kevin Clark has hit leadoff in each of the past 11 games. Clark’s nine steals rank second in the league (Sussex OF Kraig Binick has 10 thefts)... Righty Shawn Riggans is batting .444 (12-for-27) against right-handed pitchers, but is just 1-for-16 (.062) vs lefties. He sat out Saturday after taking an 87 MPH fastball in the helmet from pitcher Dan Berlind in the sixth inning Friday night... New Jersey catchers have allowed eight passed balls in 16 games this season, but they’ve also thrown out nearly 37% of attempted base stealers (11-of-30)... Over the first 16 games of the 2010 season, four New Jersey players have missed a total of 33 games on the disabled list. That doesn’t include Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES SATURDAY, JUNE 12 - SUSSEX 7, NEW JERSEY 6

Jordan Newton homered twice and Jacob Butler laced a third-inning grand slam, but the Sussex Skyhawks put up five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to a 7-6 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Saturday afternoon at Skylands Park. The Skyhawks plated the game’s first run in the bottom of the second inning against New Jersey starter Chris Allen. After back-to-back leadoff singles, third baseman Nick Giarraputo hit a two-out dribbler to the left side of the infield which scored first baseman Kris Sanchez from third. However, Butler’s recent power surge continued in the third inning. After New Jersey loaded the bases with no outs on a walk by right fielder Kevin Clark and singles by third baseman Abraham Nunez and Newton, Butler connected on a grand slam, his third home run in seven games this season, to give the Jackals a 4-1 advantage. Newton added a two-out solo shot in the top of the fourth to extend New Jersey’s lead to four. Trailing 5-1, the Skyhawks mounted a five-run attack in the fifth inning to take the lead. Second baseman Joe Persichina and third baseman Nick Giarraputo reached on back-to-back singles to begin the frame and two batters later, shortstop Chase Fontaine laced a two-run double to center to pull Sussex within two at 5-3. After center fielder Carl Loadenthal walked, designated hitter Caleb Stewart launched his first long ball of the season, a three-run blast to left, to make it 6-5 Skyhawks. Sussex used a Persichina RBI groundout to tack on a run in the eighth before Newton pulled New Jersey back within one with a one-out home run in the ninth, but Sussex closer Duaner Sanchez retired Butler and first baseman Jabe Bergeron for the game’s final two outs to notch his fifth save of the season. Sanchez, a former New York Met, had allowed just one hit in 4 1/3 scoreless innings prior to Newton’s second homer of the day. On the mound, Allen (0-2) allowed six runs on 10 hits over five innings in the losing effort. He walked one batter and struck out two. Sussex starter Jeff Icenogle lasted just four innings after allowing five runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts. The win went to Skyhawks’ reliever Tim Stringer (2-1), who entered in the fifth and tossed three innings of shutout relief. For New Jersey, Newton scored three runs and finished 3-for-4 at the plate while catcher Scott Knazek singled three times in four at-bats and threw out both of the Skyhawks’ attempted base stealers.

SKYHAWKS SKIPPER

Ed Ott begins his first season as the Skyhawks’ manager after spending the past three years as Jackals’ manager Joe Calfapietra’s hitting and third base coach. The 59-year-old Ott played eight seasons in the Majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates and California Angels and was the Pirates’ catcher during their 1979 World Championship season. Ott has also spent four years as a coach with the Houston Astros (198993) and five seasons as the manager of the now-defunct Allentown Ambassadors, where Calfapietra was one of his assistant coaches. Ott takes over the Sussex helm from another former Major Leaguer, Hal Lanier, who left the Skyhawks after two seasons to manage the expansion Normal CornBelters of the independent Frontier League. Lanier guided the Skyhawks to a league title in 2008, his first year as the team’s manager.

LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVED

This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.

NEW JERSEY, VIA TORONTO

Three Jackals players have found their way to New Jersey via the Toronto Blue Jays organization. Outfielder Jacob Butler and pitchers Edward Rodriguez and A.J. Wideman have all spent time with the Blue Jays. Former New Jersey hurlers Ted Serro and Seth Overbey also came out of the Toronto pipeline.

MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR

Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVE

The Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.

ALUMNI UPDATE

Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVE

Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

FIVE-STAR QUALITY

In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA

JOE CALFAPIETRA

CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME

MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON

MANAGERIAL CAREER

The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
