NEW JERSEY’S LAST CONTEST JACKALS AND COLONIALS EXCHANGE SHUTOUTS IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT Wednesday, June 15 Recap
Little Falls, NJ – Jackals’ starter Isaac Pavlik tossed his second consecutive complete game in the nightcap following a shutout performance by the Colonials’ Chad Paronto in the morning contest as New Jersey and Pittsfield exchanged shutouts in a Wednesday doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium. In game one, Paronto (1-3) tossed his first career complete-game shutout as the Colonials cruised to a 9-0 victory. The 35-year-old right-hander, who has spent seven of his 16 professional seasons as a reliever at the major league level, scattered six hits, struck out three batters, and did not surrender a walk. With Philip Bartleski on the mound for the Jackals, Pittsfield spotted Paronto a 5-0 lead before he took the field. After back-to-back walks to start the game, Danny Bomback laced a two-run triple into the right field corner to make it 2-0. After Bomback came plateward on an Angel Molina single, Billy Mottram connected on his third home run of the season with Molina aboard to give the Colonials a five-run lead. Pittsfield tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cap the scoring. New Jersey’s bullpen proved to be a bright spot in the game-one loss, as relievers Bobby Gagg, Shaun Ellis, and Mike Pontius each tossed a scoreless inning. Bartleski (1-1), absorbed the loss after surrendering nine runs on eight hits prior to being lifted from the game with no outs in the fifth. In game two, Pavlik turned in his second consecutive complete-game effort and Giarraputo went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as the Jackals salvaged the split, 4-0. After being shut out in the morning contest, the Jackals wasted no time jumping on Colonials’ southpaw David Qualben in the back end of the doubleheader en route to a 4-0 win. After Leonard Davis tripled into left center with two outs in the first to extend his hitting streak to 11 games, Myron Leslie stroked an RBI double to left to give New Jersey a 1-0 advantage. In the second, Nick Giarraputo launched his second home run of the season off the left field scoreboard to extend the Jackals’ lead to 2-0. In the bottom of the third, Giarraputo struck again, lacing a two-run double to left following an Argenis Reyes single and a Myron Leslie walk to give New Jersey a 4-0 edge. With the complete game, Pavlik improved to 4-0 on the year. He allowed just three hits in the contest, while striking out five. Qualben (1-1), who pitched all six innings, absorbed the loss for Pittsfield as he allowed four runs on six hits. The Jackals and Colonials play the final game of their four-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Yogi Berra Stadium when New Jersey sends southpaw James Leverton (1-2, 4.50 ERA) to the mound against Pittsfield right-hander Miguel Flores (0-2, 2.91 ERA). Cody Chrusciel and Matt Sutor have the call on the live Jackals webcast beginning 15 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com Jackal Bites: Entering the day, Isaac Pavlik owned the Can-Am League’s only complete game… In a lighter moment from game one, Jackals’ second baseman Argenis Reyes scooped up a baby duck from shallow right field and escorted it to the grassy berm in right field… Myron Leslie recorded an outfield assist in the fourth inning of game two, throwing out Pittsfield first baseman Angel Molina at first base on what appeared to be a base hit to right field for a 9-3 putout… The Jackals have allowed a first-inning run in 12 of 19 games this season… Davis extended his hitting streak to 11 consecutive games… Over the first three games of the series, the Jackals’ bullpen has allowed just one unearned run in seven innings.
CALL IT A COMEBACK: The Jackals showed a flair for the dramatic during the first two games of their four-game series against Rockland on June 3-4, battling back from deficits of 10-0 and 7-0, respectively. In the series opener, New Jersey trailed 10-0 in the third inning before eventually falling by an 11-10 score. In game two, the Jackals spotted the Boulders a 7-0 advantage before scoring eight unanswered runs to steal an 8-7 victory. New Jersey went on to win the final two contests to take the series. UPCOMING MILESTONES: Manager Joe Calfapietra is four wins shy of 400 regular-season victories with New Jersey. He entered the season with 386. WELCOME BACK RAMON: Former Jackals infielder Ramon Nivar has joined the Jackals coaching staff. Nivar, a veteran of 10 professional seasons, was in spring training with the Newark Bears this past May before announcing his retirement. The 31-year-old spent parts of three seasons (2003-05) in the majors with the Orioles and Rangers and played 23 games for New Jersey in 2008. OPENING ACT: After their 8-4 win at Pittsfield on Thursday, May 26, New Jersey is 11-3 (.786) alltime on opening day. The Jackals have now won their season opener nine times in the past 10 seasons, with the lone loss during that span coming last year. The Jackals also won their fourth straight home opener on May 31 when they downed Newark 7-6. FLYING EAST: When the Augusta, N.J.-based Sussex Skyhawks announced they would not be operating in 2011 this past winter, several former Skyhawks made their way to the New Jersey Jackals. Ed Ott, who managed the Skyhawks in 2010, returned to the Jackals, where he served as a coach from 2007-09. Players migrating from Augusta to Little Falls include reliever Jared Locke, and infielders Kris Sanchez and Nick Giarraputo. The Skyhawks were owned by Floyd Hall Enterprises, which also owns the Jackals. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER: The Jackals added a pair of potential impact players late in spring training. Outfielder Leonard Davis, who hit 20 home runs between Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse last season, signed on May 20. Myron Leslie, a 2009 Can-Am League All-Star with the Jackals, re-signed on May 24 after spending the past year in the Yankees’ organization. FORMER JACKALS IN SPRING TRAINING: In addition to Oakland A’s reliever Craig Breslow (with New Jersey in 2004), who is currently in his sixth major league season, several former Jackals appeared in major league spring training games. 6-foot-7 righthander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) posted a 3.86 ERA in three relief appearances for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Southpaw Raul Valdes (2006) appeared in seven games (one start) for the St. Louis Cardinals. First baseman John Lindsey (2005-06) went 1-for-4 for the Dodgers. Righty Jon Hunton (2007) made one relief appearances for the A’s.
