TODAY’S PROBABLE STARTERS FOR NEW JERSEY: RHP Nick Asselin (1-2, 4.26 ERA - fourth start) FOR WORCESTER: RHP John Kelly (1-0, 1.42 ERA - third start) The Jackals, who have won seven of their last nine contests, send 25-year-old righty Nick Asselin to the mound for his fourth start of the season against Worcester ace and pitching coach John Kelly. Asselin took the loss in his last outing on Thursday vs Pittsfield, yielding five earned runs on nine hits without a strikeout over seven innings. Kelly, a 37-year-old righty in his 14th professional season, has held Can-Am League opponents to just two runs on six hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks in 12 2/3 innings this season. A former 11th round pick of the Mets out of UConn in 1994, Kelly pitched briefly for New Jersey in 2006 and 2007, starting nine games during his tenure in Little Falls. The Massachusetts native has pitched for 20 different professional teams including stops in Italy, Taiwan, and Mexico.
Nick Asselin
CUTTING IT CLOSE
The Jackals have five one-run victories but have suffered four one-run defeats (nine one-run games total). Entering the Worcester series, New Jersey’s largest margin of victory was just two runs.
THE BUTLER DID IT
After lifting a towering two-run home run in the third inning on Wednesday, outfielder Jacob Butler has homered in four straight contests. In nine games since returning to the Jackals lineup on Saturday, June 5, Butler is 13-for-36 (.361) with eight of his 13 hits going for extra bases (three doubles and five home runs). He has driven in 13 runs while collecting at least one hit in all nine contests.

Just three of New Jersey’s 14 hits last night went for extra bases... During their first two games against Worcester, Jackals’ pitchers have struck out 28 batters and walked just three. Worcester leads the league with 159 strikeouts, which is 41 more than any other team in the Can-Am League... The Jackals lead the league with 36 stolen bases and 91 walks... Third baseman Abraham Nunez leads the league with 19 walks (four more than Brockton third baseman Phillip Cuadrado) and ranks third with eight thefts. Since New Jersey placed Quentin Davis on the disabled list on June 1 with a strained oblique, Kevin Clark has hit leadoff in each of the past 13 games. Clark enters Thursday’s contest riding a 10-game hitting streak after posting his third three-hit game of the season on Wednesday night. Clark also swiped three bases on Wednesday and his 12 steals tie him for the league lead with Sussex outfielder Kraig Binick... New Jersey catchers have allowed eight passed balls in 18 games this season, but they’ve also thrown out over 35% of attempted base stealers (11-of-31)... Over the first 18 games of the 2010 season, four New Jersey players have missed a total of 35 games on the disabled list. That doesn’t include Matt Stiffler, who injured his hamstring on June 4 and was released the next day because the Jackals disabled list was full.

2010 NEW JERSEY JACKALS GAME NOTES WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16 - NEW JERSEY 11, WORCESTER 3
Jacob Butler homered for the fourth straight game and starter Dan Griffin turned in six solid innings as the New Jersey Jackals scored a season-high 11 runs on their way to an 11-3 win over the Worcester Tornadoes on Wednesday night at Hanover Insurance Park. The victory was the Jackals’ seventh in their last nine contests. Six Jackals recorded multiple hits with designated hitter Kevin Clark led the charge in a 3-for-4 night at the plate. Shortstop Mike DeJesus and first baseman Jabe Bergeron each drove in three runs with DeJesus lacing his first homer of the season in the fifth inning. Griffin (1-0) allowed two runs on five hits in six frames while striking out a season-high six batters with just one walk to notch his first victory of the season in his fourth start. The right-hander threw 62 of his 89 pitches for strikes. Isaac Pavlik chipped in a scoreless seventh while rookie Jairo Mendez allowed one run over the final two frames. For the Tornadoes, rookie Matt Giusti (1-3) started and surrendered eight runs on 10 hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Jackals scored early and often as Clark led off the first inning with a double before coming plateward on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Abraham Nunez. Later in the frame, DeJesus deposited a two-out RBI single to left to make it 2-0 New Jersey. Worcester plated a run in the bottom of the frame to cut it to 2-1 after one when catcher Alex Trezza rifled a one-out single through the right side to score left fielder Billy Cather, who had reached on an infield single to begin the inning. But in the third, Butler displayed his power once again. After catcher Jordan Newton reached base on a passed ball after a strikeout, the Jackals’ left fielder hit a towering homer to center to give New Jersey a 4-1 advantage. Worcester used a solo homer to center field by designated hitter Craig Maddox with two outs in the fourth to cut its deficit to 4-2, but New Jersey scored the game’s next six runs to pull away. With Bergeron aboard in the fifth, DeJesus ripped a no-out homer just inside the right field foul pole to make it 6-2 before Bergeron’s two-run, two-out double to right an inning later gave the Jackals an 8-2 advantage. Center fielder Jeff Grose’s seventh-inning sacrifice fly made it 9-2 and an eighth-inning RBI fielders’ choice by Bergeron helped the Jackals to an eight-run lead at 10-2. Worcester scored a run in the eighth before New Jersey plated the final run of the day on a ninth-inning double play. Jackal Bites: The eight-run win marked New Jersey’s largest margin of victory this season… Kevin Clark stole three bases to take over the Can-Am League lead from Sussex outfielder Kraig Binick… DeJesus’s three RBIs doubled his total from the first 17 games of the season… Butler has driven in 13 runs in nine games for New Jersey… Jackals’ pitchers have fanned 28 batters and walked just three in the first two games of the series… Butler’s fifth long ball of the season despite missing the first nine games with an injury ties him with Brockton outfielder Keith Brachold for the league lead... After Tuesday night’s 7-4 win, New Jersey has emerged victorious in its first two meetings with Worcester this season… With Quebec also winning on Wednesday, the second-place Jackals remain five games behind the first-place Capitales. Quebec visits New Jersey for a three-game weekend series beginning Friday night.
LEAGUE-TESTED, JACKAL-APPROVED
This offseason, New Jersey acquired pitchers Chris Allen and Ryan Lobban, giving the Jackals four of the Can-Am League’s top 10 ERA leaders from a season ago. A.J. Wideman, who led the league with a 2.51 ERA, and Isaac Pavlik, whose 3.66 ERA ranked ninth, both return. Lobban’s 3.56 mark with Worcester placed him seventh while Allen’s 3.71 clip for Quebec qualified for 10th.

MAJOR LEAGUE FLAVOR
Three current Jackals have spent time in the major leagues. Leading the pack is 34-year-old infielder Abraham Nunez, who spent 12 seasons in the majors with the Pirates, Cardinals, Phillies, and Mets. Designated hitter Shawn Riggans has spent time at the major league level each of the past four seasons, appearing in 64 games with the Tampa Bay Rays. Second baseman Argenis Reyes spent parts of the past two seasons patrolling the infield for the New York Mets.

BACK IN THE NEW JERSEY GROOVE
The Jackals opening-day roster included seven players from last year’s 55-39 team, including five pitchers. Outfielder Quentin Davis’s .344 batting average would have led the league if he had enough at-bats to qualify, while shortstop Mike DeJesus was a Can-Am League All-Star after finishing fifth in the circuit with 66 RBIs. Left-hander A.J. Wideman was the league’s Pitcher of the Year, Isaac Pavlik led the Jackals with 18 starts, Romas Hicks’ 1.85 ERA placed him second among Can-Am League relievers, Seth Overbey led the league with 41 appearances, and Nick Asselin tied for the league-lead with 10 wins after coming over from New Hampshire in an August trade.
ALUMNI UPDATE
Several notable former Jackals are making an impact in affiliated baseball. Left-hander Craig Breslow (2004) is in his second season working out of the Oakland A’s bullpen. Left-hander Raul Valdez (2006) earned his first trip to the majors on April 22 when he was promoted to the New York Mets. Valdes tossed three shutout innings against Philadelphia on May 25 to notch his first career save. Former Jackals’ first baseman John Lindsey (2005 & 2006) re-signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers this offseason and is currently playing for the Triple-A Albequerque Isotopes, where he is teammates with outfielder Timo Perez. Lindsey was named the Pacific Coast League’s Batter of the Week the first week of the season when he hit .538 in the Isotopes first 10 games. He hit his 200th career home run on May 26. Myron Leslie (2009) is with the Advanced-A Tampa Yankees. Right-hander Stuart Pomeranz (2009) has transitioned from a starter to a reliever for the Tulsa Drillers, the Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies. Since 2006, 20 Jackals have been sold to major league organizations.
2009: A RETROSPECTIVE
Despite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (2720) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sussex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.
FIVE-STAR QUALITY
In addition to manager Joe Calfapietra being named Can-Am League manager of the year for the second time in his seven-year career with New Jersey, the 2009 Jackals placed a league-high five players on the Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team. First baseman Myron Leslie, shortstop Mike DeJesus, and outfielder Jerod Edmondson all earned league laurels while A.J. Wideman was selected as the league’s top left-handed pitcher and closer Rusty Tucker was named the circuit’s top reliever. Edmondson, who finished the season with the Jackals, led the league with a .332 batting average while Wideman posted a league-best 2.51 ERA while tying for the league lead with 10 wins. Tucker’s 24 saves tied him for the league lead with Brockton’s Gerald Dunn.

JACKALS MANAGER JOE CALFAPIETRA

JOE CALFAPIETRA
CALFAPIETRA’S PROFESSIONAL COACHING RESUME
MANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON
MANAGERIAL CAREER
The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm. In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship. Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapietra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title. The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
